The following program presents 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 principles designed to promote good health 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.17 and is not intended to take the place 00:00:04.20\00:00:05.87 of personalized professional care. 00:00:05.90\00:00:07.90 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.44 are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.47\00:00:10.94 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:10.97\00:00:13.41 about the information presented. 00:00:13.44\00:00:17.45 We don't often think of pain in the skin 00:00:17.48\00:00:19.91 until we get a sunburn 00:00:19.95\00:00:21.28 or maybe we come in contact 00:00:21.32\00:00:22.65 with an irritant like poison ivy. 00:00:22.68\00:00:24.32 But there are number of other things 00:00:24.35\00:00:25.69 we should watch out for 00:00:25.72\00:00:27.06 as Dr. Marcum explains in just a moment. 00:00:27.09\00:00:30.33 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:30.36\00:00:32.39 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:32.43\00:00:35.63 You want solutions to your healthcare problems. 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.37 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:38.40\00:00:41.40 Well, you're about to be given the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:41.44\00:00:44.84 Did you know that the skin 00:00:47.94\00:00:49.31 is the largest organ of the human body, 00:00:49.34\00:00:51.81 often totaling up to 20 square feet? 00:00:51.85\00:00:54.68 And our skin plays a vital role in protecting us from microbes, 00:00:54.72\00:00:58.12 regulating body temperature 00:00:58.15\00:00:59.55 and permeating sensations 00:00:59.59\00:01:00.92 of touch, heat and cold. 00:01:00.96\00:01:03.16 When you feel pain from your skin, 00:01:03.19\00:01:04.79 it's important to know what's causing the pain 00:01:04.83\00:01:07.03 which is why that's our topic on today's program. 00:01:07.06\00:01:09.73 Dr. Marcum, welcome to the program 00:01:09.76\00:01:11.20 and what do we need to know about pain on the skin? 00:01:11.23\00:01:14.00 Well, you know, first I want to back up a little bit 00:01:14.04\00:01:16.64 when we talk about pain in general. 00:01:16.67\00:01:19.61 We talked about different organs 00:01:19.64\00:01:21.54 in different parts of the body that pain affects. 00:01:21.58\00:01:23.55 Right. 00:01:23.58\00:01:24.91 And it all turns on the same bad chemical pathway. 00:01:24.95\00:01:27.75 Chronic pain is not good. 00:01:27.78\00:01:30.49 Acute pain really tells us that something is wrong. 00:01:30.52\00:01:34.56 So, if you have pain on your skin 00:01:34.59\00:01:36.89 that tells you something is wrong. 00:01:36.93\00:01:38.86 Right. 00:01:38.89\00:01:40.23 Now, we talked a little bit 00:01:40.26\00:01:41.93 as we gone about dangerous type pains 00:01:41.96\00:01:43.97 that you've to get evaluated right away, you know, 00:01:44.00\00:01:46.77 chest pains. 00:01:46.80\00:01:48.14 We're gonna find out there're certain abdominal pains, 00:01:48.17\00:01:50.27 headache pains, those are emergency pains, 00:01:50.31\00:01:52.21 you can't wait around. 00:01:52.24\00:01:53.58 Right. 00:01:53.61\00:01:54.94 'Cause it could be something life threatening. 00:01:54.98\00:01:56.31 And we talked about things 00:01:56.34\00:01:57.68 that aren't quite as life threatening, you know, 00:01:57.71\00:02:00.08 foot pains and skin pain is usually one 00:02:00.12\00:02:02.95 that's not as life threatening as some of the others, 00:02:02.98\00:02:05.35 but it's still a concern 00:02:05.39\00:02:07.46 'cause it can turn into chronic pain. 00:02:07.49\00:02:09.69 And chronic pain is a bad situation. 00:02:09.72\00:02:12.89 So if you think about your skin, you know, 00:02:12.93\00:02:15.13 it goes everywhere, does a lot of different things, 00:02:15.16\00:02:17.47 it protects us, so we want to keep our skin 00:02:17.50\00:02:20.40 in pretty good shape. 00:02:20.44\00:02:22.30 Now, if you think about, 00:02:22.34\00:02:23.67 well, when was the last time my skin hurt 00:02:23.71\00:02:25.94 and what caused it. 00:02:25.97\00:02:27.31 Well, I think if everyone thinks 00:02:27.34\00:02:28.81 about what causes pain, 00:02:28.84\00:02:30.75 they'll know, they'll realize it. 00:02:30.78\00:02:32.11 Well, the things that caused pain most 00:02:32.15\00:02:34.88 were something trauma. 00:02:34.92\00:02:36.48 You know, a bruise, a cut. 00:02:36.52\00:02:40.12 You know, those type of thing caused skin problems. 00:02:40.16\00:02:43.99 And that's what we see they're most common. 00:02:44.03\00:02:45.59 But there're certainly other things that can cause it. 00:02:45.63\00:02:47.66 So any chemical or physical damage 00:02:47.70\00:02:50.87 on the skin can actually cause it. 00:02:50.90\00:02:53.37 One of the most severe causes of pain in the skin is burns. 00:02:53.40\00:02:57.64 You know, if you get a lot of-- 00:02:57.67\00:02:59.74 'Cause of the function of the skin, 00:02:59.77\00:03:01.21 so people that have lots of burns like in a house fire. 00:03:01.24\00:03:06.01 Their skin is burned all over. 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.58 Their skin no longer function. 00:03:07.62\00:03:08.98 So the skin is so important 00:03:09.02\00:03:10.35 for thermoregulatory, infections, 00:03:10.39\00:03:13.09 it's a barrier for all these infections 00:03:13.12\00:03:15.39 that come in our body, 00:03:15.42\00:03:16.76 so we figure that large of amounts of our skin burn, 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.89 that's a very serious infection. 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.46 Also sometimes we get exposed to chemicals. 00:03:21.50\00:03:25.07 And that's very interesting 00:03:25.10\00:03:26.43 because if we think about our world, 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.44 we have more chemicals around than ever before. 00:03:28.47\00:03:31.47 And I'm always wondering, you know, 00:03:31.51\00:03:32.84 all the chemicals we put on our bodies, 00:03:32.87\00:03:34.68 the faces, the lotions, the different things we put. 00:03:34.71\00:03:37.98 Are these good long term 00:03:38.01\00:03:39.85 or could they be damaging our skin? 00:03:39.88\00:03:41.65 Right. Yes. 00:03:41.68\00:03:43.02 Well, how do you know that? 00:03:43.05\00:03:44.39 How do you know if something's damaging your skin? 00:03:44.42\00:03:46.12 Well, if you have pain, if you have rash, 00:03:46.15\00:03:49.02 if you have some type of skin reaction. 00:03:49.06\00:03:51.99 So skin usually is response to some type of stimuli 00:03:52.03\00:03:55.86 and there is many different causes of skin pain. 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.57 I think we've identified the leading causes 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.94 and that's trauma I've heard it. 00:04:00.97\00:04:02.67 Guess what? 00:04:02.70\00:04:04.04 Number two might be cause of damage your skin. 00:04:04.07\00:04:06.71 And I sort of alluded to it already. 00:04:06.74\00:04:08.98 We're talking about kind of irritants like 00:04:09.01\00:04:10.35 poison ivy or bug bites, so that kind of thing. 00:04:10.38\00:04:11.88 That is right up there with it too. 00:04:11.91\00:04:13.25 Okay. 00:04:13.28\00:04:14.62 You know, bug bites, things biting your skin, 00:04:14.65\00:04:17.12 mosquitoes, ticks, you know, 00:04:17.15\00:04:20.96 all sorts of things can get on the skin, 00:04:20.99\00:04:22.66 by insects of different types. 00:04:22.69\00:04:25.03 But I was thinking about sunburn. 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.40 Okay, right, yeah. 00:04:27.43\00:04:28.76 You know, we talk about, 00:04:28.80\00:04:30.13 when we talked about burns a little bit, 00:04:30.17\00:04:31.50 how dangerous that is like a big burns 00:04:31.53\00:04:33.74 and we had different types of burns. 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.10 You have first degree burns, second degree burns, 00:04:35.14\00:04:38.74 third degree burns. 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.41 The larger the burn number, the more the skin is damaged. 00:04:40.44\00:04:44.45 You know, and it talks about the thickness. 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.92 Well, you know, sunburns are usually life threatening 00:04:46.95\00:04:50.92 like a house fire burn, okay. 00:04:50.95\00:04:53.36 And unfortunately we need the sun for vitamin D 00:04:53.39\00:04:56.49 which is a prohormone in our body. 00:04:56.52\00:04:58.89 But sometimes we can get too much sun. 00:04:58.93\00:05:02.36 And if we get too much sun, guess what? 00:05:02.40\00:05:04.10 We get sunburns. 00:05:04.13\00:05:05.73 And the real problem with chronic sunburn, Nick, 00:05:05.77\00:05:08.14 is if you're exposed to the sun a lot, a lot, a lot 00:05:08.17\00:05:10.91 and burn the lot, later in life 00:05:10.94\00:05:13.34 that gonna be predisposed you to skin cancer. 00:05:13.38\00:05:17.75 Skin cancers, so you don't want to burn over and over. 00:05:17.78\00:05:20.02 So if your skin is not conditioned, 00:05:20.05\00:05:22.58 and you're gonna burn a lot, 00:05:22.62\00:05:23.95 you might benefit from having sunscreen. 00:05:23.99\00:05:27.39 So what's the optimal amount of sun we should get everyday? 00:05:27.42\00:05:30.06 Well, it's really, that's a great question, Nick. 00:05:30.09\00:05:32.39 And it's really according to your complexion, okay. 00:05:32.43\00:05:35.70 If you're a fair skin person, 00:05:35.73\00:05:37.33 you're not gonna need as much sun. 00:05:37.37\00:05:39.43 If you're a darker skin person, then the pigment is darker, 00:05:39.47\00:05:42.07 so it's not much sun getting through, 00:05:42.10\00:05:43.64 so you're allowed to take more sun. 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.67 And some of it's your genetics where you live. 00:05:45.71\00:05:48.34 People that live at high latitudes, you know, 00:05:48.38\00:05:51.11 near Alaska, their skin is much different 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.38 than someone that lives near the equator. 00:05:53.42\00:05:56.08 So it varies from person, but a general rule is 00:05:56.12\00:05:58.05 you don't want your skin to burn. 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.16 And for vitamin D, you want to get out in the sun 00:06:00.19\00:06:02.16 at least 30 minutes three or four times a day 00:06:02.19\00:06:04.23 as long as your sun does, as long as your skin, 00:06:04.26\00:06:07.20 as long as your skin doesn't burn. 00:06:07.23\00:06:08.96 So the key is keeping the skin from burn 00:06:09.00\00:06:11.33 'cause that's when it has damage. 00:06:11.37\00:06:12.93 But if you think about over the history of the earth, 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.37 you know, people for years and years 00:06:15.40\00:06:17.11 were out in the sun all the time. 00:06:17.14\00:06:18.84 Their skins gradually got conditioned to it. 00:06:18.87\00:06:21.48 Now, what's very damaging to the skin is-- 00:06:21.51\00:06:25.55 Your generation probably does it more than mine, 00:06:25.58\00:06:27.28 they get into these tanning booths. 00:06:27.32\00:06:29.05 Oh, sure. 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.42 Yeah, and they get this ultraviolet rays. 00:06:30.45\00:06:32.75 And it just bombards the skin with ultraviolet rays 00:06:32.79\00:06:35.42 which causes mutations, and sooner or later 00:06:35.46\00:06:38.63 these mutations later in life can lead to skin cancer. 00:06:38.66\00:06:42.10 And of course, the most serious skin cancer 00:06:42.13\00:06:44.60 that we're all worried about is one called melanoma. 00:06:44.63\00:06:48.40 Melanoma is a very aggressive skin cancer. 00:06:48.44\00:06:51.41 You know, we have some call squamous cell, 00:06:51.44\00:06:54.14 basal cell carcinoma, these all can hurt the skin, 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.81 but melanoma is probably the most serious. 00:06:57.85\00:07:00.72 So in causing skin pain, you know, 00:07:00.75\00:07:03.82 sunburns definitely cause skin pains, 00:07:03.85\00:07:06.05 I think everyone knows 00:07:06.09\00:07:07.72 if they've been out in the sun too long 00:07:07.76\00:07:09.29 if they had that type of pain. 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.29 And usually for that type of pain, 00:07:11.33\00:07:12.69 they just put some local, 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.46 local something to make the skin feel better. 00:07:14.50\00:07:17.17 Make sure it's moisturized, 00:07:17.20\00:07:18.63 so it doesn't lose its moisture. 00:07:18.67\00:07:20.54 Make sure you drink enough water 00:07:20.57\00:07:22.50 and try not to do it over and over again. 00:07:22.54\00:07:25.17 Yeah. Yeah. 00:07:25.21\00:07:26.54 I know, during the summers we love to go out in the water. 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.98 And too many times I've to say, I stay out there and realize 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.58 oh, yeah, I'm getting sunburn, and it's too late. 00:07:32.61\00:07:34.48 Yeah. 00:07:34.52\00:07:35.85 And it does a toll on a skin and you get to watch it 00:07:35.88\00:07:37.99 and then later in life it's very important, 00:07:38.02\00:07:39.65 that's one of the screenings that we do 00:07:39.69\00:07:41.72 is we screen for skin cancers 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.29 'cause if you picked that up early on, 00:07:43.32\00:07:44.96 it could be a life saving 00:07:44.99\00:07:46.53 especially for malignant melanoma. 00:07:46.56\00:07:49.30 So if you see something on your skin that's changing color, 00:07:49.33\00:07:52.87 that's raising that has a irregular border, 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.90 that's oozing some type of moisture out of it 00:07:55.94\00:07:58.64 that doesn't look right, 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.01 that's the time to see a professional in skin pain 00:08:00.04\00:08:04.25 and that professional is called a dermatologist. 00:08:04.28\00:08:07.52 Derm-skin-atologist. 00:08:07.55\00:08:09.42 So there are experts that, you know, 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.02 deciding whether something is cancer, 00:08:11.05\00:08:12.95 knowing how to treat 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.32 skin disorder and skin pain. 00:08:14.36\00:08:15.69 So hopefully no one will get to a dermatologist, 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.43 so we talked about, a little bit 00:08:18.46\00:08:20.10 about trauma to the skin. 00:08:20.13\00:08:21.46 We talked about sunburn. 00:08:21.50\00:08:23.57 We talked about insects bites. 00:08:23.60\00:08:26.50 How about infections? 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.30 You know, infections are frequent 00:08:28.34\00:08:29.84 causes of damaged skin. 00:08:29.87\00:08:31.97 One of the infections we occasionally see 00:08:32.01\00:08:33.84 is in the heart area is shingles. 00:08:33.88\00:08:36.58 You know 'cause that's a rash that causes but measles, 00:08:36.61\00:08:40.82 chickenpox, all of those things can cause different reactions 00:08:40.85\00:08:45.09 to the skin that actually damages the skin. 00:08:45.12\00:08:48.42 And we don't want the skin to be damaged 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.09 'cause it is an important organ. 00:08:50.13\00:08:52.23 And it's very important in fighting infections. 00:08:52.26\00:08:55.36 Okay. 00:08:55.40\00:08:56.73 Now I had one thing to choose for good skin care 00:08:56.77\00:08:59.83 out of everything else that I would choose for. 00:08:59.87\00:09:02.57 One treatment I would recommend for the skin 00:09:02.60\00:09:05.44 for everyone out there 00:09:05.47\00:09:06.81 and that would be the treatment of water. 00:09:06.84\00:09:10.25 Yeah. Water. 00:09:10.28\00:09:11.61 It sounds so easy but did you know that 00:09:11.65\00:09:14.38 it's been estimated that about 00:09:14.42\00:09:16.22 70 percent of people are dehydrated. 00:09:16.25\00:09:19.42 Wow. It's a big number. 00:09:19.45\00:09:20.79 Right and when you're hydrating guess what? 00:09:20.82\00:09:22.86 The skin becomes vulnerable, 00:09:22.89\00:09:25.26 not only it loses its elasticity, 00:09:25.29\00:09:28.03 it gets older quicker, 00:09:28.06\00:09:29.73 it loses some of its thermoregulatory ability, 00:09:29.76\00:09:32.83 so it's not as good as getting rid of heat 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.40 which causes a lot of problems, if they're aging process, 00:09:35.44\00:09:38.64 so just getting enough water is very important for skin care. 00:09:38.67\00:09:43.28 It's hard to believe. And that's an easy one. 00:09:43.31\00:09:45.01 You know, we can just drink every hour, 00:09:45.05\00:09:47.28 every couple of hours and that will take care of that 00:09:47.32\00:09:49.48 and save a lot of issues with the skin. 00:09:49.52\00:09:51.89 Now, so other things that 00:09:51.92\00:09:53.25 people don't think about with skin, 00:09:53.29\00:09:54.66 it damages things like blisters. 00:09:54.69\00:09:56.73 You know, you have blisters on your skin 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.26 and that can be something from 00:09:58.29\00:09:59.63 not having the right footwear or clothing. 00:09:59.66\00:10:04.20 We want to protect our skin from trauma, okay. 00:10:04.23\00:10:07.60 And what type of person has skin trauma? 00:10:07.64\00:10:10.64 Well, let's say someone's working outside a lot, 00:10:10.67\00:10:13.68 maybe working in agriculture, you know, 00:10:13.71\00:10:16.71 their skin is constantly, you know, 00:10:16.75\00:10:18.65 with insecticides and different types of things 00:10:18.68\00:10:21.08 that are on plants, 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.45 those people might want to be careful to protect their skin, 00:10:22.48\00:10:25.02 because remember, if the skin is compromised, 00:10:25.05\00:10:27.72 guess what? 00:10:27.76\00:10:29.09 Chemicals can enter the body a lot easier. 00:10:29.12\00:10:30.63 Sure. 00:10:30.66\00:10:31.99 So the skin is protected barrier 00:10:32.03\00:10:33.56 that help protect us, helps regulate, 00:10:33.60\00:10:35.70 temperature of the skin does a lot of many, 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.67 many wonderful things. 00:10:37.70\00:10:39.07 So those are just a few of the common causes of skin pain. 00:10:39.10\00:10:42.14 Now, remember a long time back 00:10:42.17\00:10:43.94 when we started the series on pain, 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.97 we talked about different types of pain. 00:10:46.01\00:10:47.84 We talked about the nerves sensing the pain, okay. 00:10:47.88\00:10:52.21 You know, and we talked nociceptive type pains 00:10:52.25\00:10:55.25 where the nerve is fine, 00:10:55.28\00:10:56.62 but also the nerve can be damaged. 00:10:56.65\00:10:59.32 And if a nerve is damaged, 00:10:59.35\00:11:01.12 you could also have chronic skin pain 00:11:01.16\00:11:03.96 and that could drawn, it might be from diabetes 00:11:03.99\00:11:06.13 which is a blood vessel disease. 00:11:06.16\00:11:08.03 It might be from cutting it or hurting it. 00:11:08.06\00:11:10.47 Infections can do it 00:11:10.50\00:11:11.83 but one of the toxins that hurt our nerves is alcohol. 00:11:11.87\00:11:15.84 A lot of people don't realize that alcohol and smoking 00:11:15.87\00:11:19.17 long term hurt nerves 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.44 and can eventually end up with nerve type pains 00:11:21.48\00:11:24.05 including skin pains. 00:11:24.08\00:11:25.55 So as general, the overall health of your body 00:11:25.58\00:11:28.38 is gonna help your skin out as well. 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.49 Well, it sounds like 00:11:31.52\00:11:32.85 skin is more important than I realized. 00:11:32.89\00:11:34.26 Yes, and a lot of people don't just, you know, 00:11:34.29\00:11:36.06 they don't take their skin serious 00:11:36.09\00:11:37.43 but if you have a skin pain, you know, you want-- 00:11:37.46\00:11:39.43 Again the same principles. 00:11:39.46\00:11:41.23 Find out why you're having the pain. 00:11:41.26\00:11:43.33 What can you do short term and is there any long term 00:11:43.37\00:11:46.40 sequel from this damage your skin 00:11:46.43\00:11:48.30 that you need to be concerned about. 00:11:48.34\00:11:50.57 Alrighty, well, we got a bunch of questions 00:11:50.61\00:11:52.27 that people have written into our website, 00:11:52.31\00:11:53.88 that's heartwiseministries.org. 00:11:53.91\00:11:56.31 And if you have a question about your skin 00:11:56.34\00:11:58.35 or other sources of the body that are causing pain. 00:11:58.38\00:12:01.08 Please visit our website 00:12:01.12\00:12:02.45 and you can ask the doctor your questions. 00:12:02.48\00:12:04.05 You can also write in your payer requests. 00:12:04.09\00:12:06.09 You can read Dr. Marcum's blogs 00:12:06.12\00:12:07.92 or you can listen to previous television 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.66 and radio programs right there on the website, 00:12:09.69\00:12:11.53 so we encourage you to visit heartwiseministries.org. 00:12:11.56\00:12:14.30 And we'll be back in just a moment 00:12:14.33\00:12:15.66 as Dr. Marcum answers more questions 00:12:15.70\00:12:17.30 on pain in relation to the skin. 00:12:17.33\00:12:19.33
