Welcome back to the program. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm Nick Evinson here with Dr. James Marcum 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 of Heartwise Ministries 00:00:04.10\00:00:05.43 and we'd like you to visit our website 00:00:05.47\00:00:06.97 at Heartwiseministries.org, 00:00:07.00\00:00:09.60 there are Dr. Marcum's blog articles there, 00:00:09.64\00:00:11.67 you can read, learn more about health. 00:00:11.71\00:00:13.51 We also have, ask the doctor page 00:00:13.54\00:00:15.41 where you can ask your questions 00:00:15.44\00:00:17.21 and we also encourage you to get on there 00:00:17.25\00:00:20.15 and ask for your prayer requests. 00:00:20.18\00:00:22.05 We pray weekly for those who write in their requests 00:00:22.08\00:00:24.65 and we take it, as quite a privilege 00:00:24.69\00:00:26.89 that people put their requests there for us to lift up to God. 00:00:26.92\00:00:30.26 And, Dr. Marcum, today we're talking about 00:00:30.29\00:00:31.86 the sources of foot pain. 00:00:31.89\00:00:33.70 Yeah, and we're doing this pain series 00:00:33.73\00:00:36.90 and we've talked about different parts of the body, 00:00:36.93\00:00:38.67 and feet are definitely a part 00:00:38.70\00:00:40.50 that cause pain to lot of people. 00:00:40.54\00:00:43.44 And we've talked a little bit about some of the things 00:00:43.47\00:00:45.84 that we need to do for feet and foot, 00:00:45.87\00:00:49.44 I keep saying that the wrong way 00:00:49.48\00:00:50.85 but when you think about it, 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.05 you know, we want to do things that keep our feet healthy, 00:00:53.08\00:00:55.75 so we don't need to put trauma on our foot 00:00:55.78\00:00:58.22 and then when we do have trauma, 00:00:58.25\00:00:59.59 we want to do things that get it well, right away. 00:00:59.62\00:01:02.59 And if we think about little things 00:01:02.62\00:01:04.16 that we can do on a daily basis, 00:01:04.19\00:01:05.59 we want to keep our entire bodies healthy, 00:01:05.63\00:01:07.83 that's gonna help our feet. 00:01:07.86\00:01:09.26 We want to give good foot wear, keep our feet clean, you know, 00:01:09.30\00:01:12.87 not have a lot of other health problems 00:01:12.90\00:01:15.14 and then when we notice we have a foot problem, 00:01:15.17\00:01:17.77 we want to deal with it quickly and we've met a podiatrist, 00:01:17.81\00:01:21.44 Dr. Cheryl Haag and she is a podiatrist 00:01:21.48\00:01:24.68 and that's a doctor specialized in feet, 00:01:24.71\00:01:27.55 and they could help you get through foot pain 00:01:27.58\00:01:29.58 hopefully before it becomes a big problem. 00:01:29.62\00:01:32.19 And I'm glad you've mentioned our website, Nick, 00:01:32.22\00:01:34.02 there's a lot of neat things there are that people can go to 00:01:34.06\00:01:36.73 and right now, one of the nice things 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.06 about the website is if you're interested 00:01:39.09\00:01:40.70 in helping your fellow man, you know, 00:01:40.73\00:01:42.30 we're a place where people can get on 00:01:42.33\00:01:44.40 and give health information but they can share it 00:01:44.43\00:01:46.50 on their blogs, their websites. 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.04 That's right. 00:01:48.07\00:01:49.40 We're making one minute radio spots, 00:01:49.44\00:01:51.71 we're also gonna give one minute television spots, 00:01:51.74\00:01:54.24 so they can go back and listen to a lot of 00:01:54.28\00:01:55.94 radio programs about their health, 00:01:55.98\00:01:58.01 so this is a good place where people can 00:01:58.05\00:01:59.88 grow in their health because, you know, 00:01:59.91\00:02:01.28 when people become healthy, I mean, sort of, they realize, 00:02:01.32\00:02:04.39 you know, my health's important and it's sort of... 00:02:04.42\00:02:06.55 The physical and spiritual goes together. 00:02:06.59\00:02:09.42 And whenever anyone starts having pain, 00:02:09.46\00:02:11.73 you know, we've talked about this before, 00:02:11.76\00:02:13.16 it puts stress on the body. 00:02:13.19\00:02:14.56 That's right, yeah. 00:02:14.60\00:02:15.93 And if you have pain all the time, 00:02:15.96\00:02:17.30 guess what, you know, if you have foot pain, 00:02:17.33\00:02:18.67 you don't sleep well, if you don't sleep well, 00:02:18.70\00:02:20.27 that puts more stress on your body, 00:02:20.30\00:02:21.87 it may be you eat comfort foods. 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.84 That's right. 00:02:23.87\00:02:25.21 You know, no one wants to eat, you know, 00:02:25.24\00:02:26.57 but you'll start eating poorly, you don't exercise as much 00:02:26.61\00:02:30.58 and some people get in the medicine routine, 00:02:30.61\00:02:34.02 "Oh, I'm gonna take a medicine, 00:02:34.05\00:02:35.38 just so I can walk and feel better..." 00:02:35.42\00:02:37.29 "And keep the inflammation down." 00:02:37.32\00:02:38.65 Yeah. 00:02:38.69\00:02:40.02 And then, you know, 00:02:40.06\00:02:41.39 not too longer I wrote the book, 00:02:41.42\00:02:42.76 "Medicines that kill," 00:02:42.79\00:02:44.13 and long term medications all have side effects. 00:02:44.16\00:02:45.53 Some have dangerous side effects. 00:02:45.56\00:02:47.60 So I'm glad we're getting the message out here today, 00:02:47.63\00:02:50.33 and I heard we have some questions that come in... 00:02:50.37\00:02:52.47 That's right, that's right, we do. 00:02:52.50\00:02:55.44 Our first person writes in, 00:02:55.47\00:02:56.81 what can I do to prevent a foot problem? 00:02:56.84\00:02:59.44 Okay, that's a great one. 00:02:59.47\00:03:00.84 So I guess we would address this 00:03:00.88\00:03:02.38 to a baby, you know, 00:03:02.41\00:03:03.98 what can I do over the course of the life 00:03:04.01\00:03:05.81 to lower my risk of foot? 00:03:05.85\00:03:07.45 Well, I think that Dr. Haag made a great footwear, 00:03:07.48\00:03:12.19 we have to have the appropriate footwear. 00:03:12.22\00:03:14.26 Right, and I think she point out 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.62 specifically sandals and footwear 00:03:15.66\00:03:18.56 that doesn't give good support. 00:03:18.59\00:03:19.96 Yeah, it's not gonna be a good thing and, you know, 00:03:20.00\00:03:23.50 I had a patient once that had high heel shoes 00:03:23.53\00:03:25.67 and that really damaged her life, 00:03:25.70\00:03:27.94 you know, you wanna have, you know, 00:03:27.97\00:03:29.30 you don't wanna confine your feet, 00:03:29.34\00:03:31.04 you wanna give them room to breeze, 00:03:31.07\00:03:32.61 so I think in keeping the foot healthy, 00:03:32.64\00:03:35.24 nice footwear, we wanna have that. 00:03:35.28\00:03:37.85 I mean, other thing that's very important 00:03:37.88\00:03:39.28 for the foot is water, okay? 00:03:39.31\00:03:43.22 A large percentage of the foot is made of water. 00:03:43.25\00:03:46.52 If you're dehydrating, guess what happens? 00:03:46.55\00:03:48.56 The skin gets dry, starts to crack, 00:03:48.59\00:03:51.36 higher risk of infection. 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.19 Rubs on the shoes, you're more likely 00:03:53.23\00:03:54.96 to get cheilosis and those type of thing, 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.97 that's an important thing. 00:03:57.00\00:03:58.97 You don't wanna put things on your foot that's too tight, 00:03:59.00\00:04:02.04 you don't wanna squeeze them to death. 00:04:02.07\00:04:04.17 That messes up the circulation. 00:04:04.21\00:04:05.64 Yes, and it can damage the nerves, 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.94 you know, damages nerves 00:04:07.98\00:04:09.31 when you press on things too much, 00:04:09.34\00:04:10.68 that's never a good thing. 00:04:10.71\00:04:12.68 Other things that help us exercise the feet, 00:04:12.71\00:04:15.15 you know, feet need exercise too. 00:04:15.18\00:04:16.92 Moving, walking, stretching the feet, 00:04:16.95\00:04:19.65 stretching the tendons, the ligaments, 00:04:19.69\00:04:22.09 the different parts of the feet. 00:04:22.12\00:04:24.16 One of the things that a lot of people 00:04:24.19\00:04:25.63 don't realize is that, feet support the body. 00:04:25.66\00:04:29.46 If you carry too much weight, guess what that's gonna do? 00:04:29.50\00:04:32.87 Be harder on your feet. 00:04:32.90\00:04:34.24 Yes, heavy people, lot of stress on the feet and, 00:04:34.27\00:04:36.64 you know, you might be able to do it on the short term 00:04:36.67\00:04:38.87 but week after week, year after year, 00:04:38.91\00:04:41.21 all that extra pressure on the foot, 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.38 the foot part starts to wear out quicker. 00:04:43.41\00:04:45.58 Right. 00:04:45.61\00:04:46.95 Unfortunately, when your feet wear out, 00:04:46.98\00:04:48.62 you cannot be ambulatory, you can't move around 00:04:48.65\00:04:51.15 and you start to lose your independent. 00:04:51.19\00:04:53.25 What are other things? 00:04:53.29\00:04:54.79 Standing too long, 00:04:54.82\00:04:56.32 you don't wanna stand too long in one position. 00:04:56.36\00:04:58.39 That's gonna hurt your feet 00:04:58.43\00:05:00.43 because of the continued wear and tear 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.53 of the ballets mechanisms that you have to do. 00:05:02.56\00:05:05.83 Another thing that can help prevent foot problems is 00:05:05.87\00:05:08.37 when your toes are actually in your shoe, 00:05:08.40\00:05:10.97 move your toes. 00:05:11.01\00:05:12.34 Right, sure... 00:05:12.37\00:05:13.71 And move your toes every so often. 00:05:13.74\00:05:15.71 Some people like to wear the same shoe all the time 00:05:15.74\00:05:18.58 but giving your foot a different look, you know, 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.82 of course, sometimes we have fungus 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.49 in different shoes that goes from foot to foot. 00:05:23.52\00:05:26.99 We don't want to have fungus foot shoes 00:05:27.02\00:05:30.06 and so that's another thing, 00:05:30.09\00:05:31.43 change your shoes on a regular basis. 00:05:31.46\00:05:33.03 Stand on carpet, instead of hard things 00:05:33.06\00:05:35.26 that might help support up. 00:05:35.30\00:05:37.20 At the end of day, prop up your feet, 00:05:37.23\00:05:38.83 let your feet do some resting and massage. 00:05:38.87\00:05:42.40 Massage is another good thing we can do for the foot. 00:05:42.44\00:05:45.41 And then of course, in general be healthy, 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.51 especially diabetes. 00:05:47.54\00:05:48.88 Diabetes hurts the circulation of the foot, 00:05:48.91\00:05:51.41 hurts the nerves of the foot, so we want to avoid diabetes, 00:05:51.45\00:05:54.58 so just avoiding diabetes, obesity, big shoes, 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.72 all these things are just little things we can do 00:05:57.75\00:06:00.49 to prevent foot problems. 00:06:00.52\00:06:02.12 And then we do have a foot problem, 00:06:02.16\00:06:03.66 identify what the problem is and get help right away. 00:06:03.69\00:06:06.86 But a lot of time the feet will get better 00:06:06.90\00:06:09.26 just by proper shoe wear, proper exercise, 00:06:09.30\00:06:12.57 getting enough rest 00:06:12.60\00:06:14.04 and that's really many times all that's needed. 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.30 Now if you don't pay attention to that 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.04 and you continue to wear and tear, 00:06:18.07\00:06:19.67 that's when they go on 00:06:19.71\00:06:21.04 to need surgery and larger things. 00:06:21.08\00:06:22.78 Right. 00:06:22.81\00:06:24.15 Now you've mentioned something about 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.88 finding the right kind of shoe and good support. 00:06:25.91\00:06:27.98 Yeah. What does that mean? 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.35 What does that look like, shoe with good support? 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.29 Well, yeah, what does a good shoe look like? 00:06:31.32\00:06:33.59 Well, first of all, you wanna make sure 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.29 you're getting in the right size of shoe. 00:06:35.32\00:06:37.99 So you wanna measure your shoe, you know, 00:06:38.03\00:06:40.06 your shoe size in the evenings 00:06:40.10\00:06:41.76 'cause that's when your foot expands, 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.17 so measure your foot in the evening 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.80 as when your foot, 00:06:45.83\00:06:47.17 you wanna get shoes that are wide, 00:06:47.20\00:06:49.00 wide shoes so you have plenty of room, move your toys, 00:06:49.04\00:06:52.17 you actually wanna avoid heels if you can, 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.28 you know, this high heels shoes. 00:06:54.31\00:06:55.78 That puts pressure on different parts of the foot, 00:06:55.81\00:06:58.21 puts extra strain on different ligaments 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.98 that you don't really need. 00:07:01.02\00:07:03.05 You want to try to avoid pointy shoes, 00:07:03.08\00:07:05.72 you know, they squish all your toes together. 00:07:05.75\00:07:07.22 Toes together, right. 00:07:07.26\00:07:08.59 'Cause remember, we talked about 00:07:08.62\00:07:09.96 when the first toe squeezes the second toe, 00:07:09.99\00:07:11.83 it's a setup for bunions, don't want that. 00:07:11.86\00:07:15.16 You want, as you said, you want a roomy shoe with... 00:07:15.20\00:07:18.03 You want a stiff shoe 00:07:18.07\00:07:19.40 that doesn't have too much flexibility, 00:07:19.43\00:07:20.90 about the toe shift and you wanna have support 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.41 that helps the planar structures. 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.77 We talked about what shoes to avoid, we wanna avoid flats. 00:07:25.81\00:07:29.34 There's no arch support there. 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.81 We wanna have some shoes that will allow air in, 00:07:31.85\00:07:34.35 allow your foot to breathe, you know, 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.12 if you think back, the original design, 00:07:37.15\00:07:39.52 do you think in the garden of Eden 00:07:39.55\00:07:41.26 that there were shoes? 00:07:41.29\00:07:42.62 No. 00:07:42.66\00:07:43.99 Do you think they went on bare foot? 00:07:44.03\00:07:45.36 Yeah, bare foot, obviously. 00:07:45.39\00:07:46.73 Yeah, they breathe and then when they, 00:07:46.76\00:07:48.10 after that they went to sandals, you know, 00:07:48.13\00:07:49.46 we didn't get all these, 00:07:49.50\00:07:50.83 I don't think fancy footwear for quite a few years, so... 00:07:50.87\00:07:53.57 Now do you think, back in those times, 00:07:53.60\00:07:55.44 that they were using their feet as intended 00:07:55.47\00:07:57.94 and they were up on their feet more? 00:07:57.97\00:07:59.67 And so that benefited their feet. 00:07:59.71\00:08:01.61 Yes, I think that the original plan was to be up 00:08:01.64\00:08:03.85 and moving and exercise our feet, 00:08:03.88\00:08:05.85 I'm sure they didn't have 00:08:05.88\00:08:07.22 some of these chronic weight issues 00:08:07.25\00:08:08.68 that we have now today. 00:08:08.72\00:08:10.19 They weren't sitting all day, the things they weren't doing, 00:08:10.22\00:08:13.52 so their feet were probably better, overall shape... 00:08:13.56\00:08:16.36 To deal with the complexities of life. 00:08:16.39\00:08:20.06 So because of the lifestyle we have now, 00:08:20.10\00:08:22.30 we're rather sedentarian, 00:08:22.33\00:08:23.73 we're not up working on our feet a lot, 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.27 our feet can't handle being barefoot, 00:08:25.30\00:08:27.50 we need that support, a lot of us. 00:08:27.54\00:08:28.94 I think that's a good support and, you know, 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.47 you remember she said, cushioning in the shoes, 00:08:30.51\00:08:32.71 especially for arch support was a very important thing 00:08:32.74\00:08:35.81 and I think another thing that's helpful for feet 00:08:35.84\00:08:37.55 is having some traction on the bottom of the shoe, 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.62 you know, so you're not sliding a lot. 00:08:40.65\00:08:42.28 Yeah. 00:08:42.32\00:08:43.65 Now those are just some general things to look for 00:08:43.69\00:08:45.12 when you're buying a shoe but how many people 00:08:45.15\00:08:46.82 when they look for a shoe, 00:08:46.86\00:08:48.19 they don't think about the foot health, they think, 00:08:48.22\00:08:49.92 let me pick some that looks good. 00:08:49.96\00:08:51.29 Let me get the color right. 00:08:51.33\00:08:52.66 Yeah, let me look good but how about this, 00:08:52.69\00:08:54.03 whatever is the coolest shoe out there... 00:08:54.06\00:08:55.40 Right, that's right, yeah. 00:08:55.43\00:08:56.77 Whether it's a good shoe or not, 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.13 I'm gonna get that shoe because it's a cool shoe, 00:08:58.17\00:08:59.50 you know, I'm gonna get this 'cause this is what expecting, 00:08:59.53\00:09:01.54 it makes me look good but I would tell you 00:09:01.57\00:09:03.91 over the long haul, day in, day out, 00:09:03.94\00:09:05.97 if you put pressure on your feet, 00:09:06.01\00:09:08.28 that shouldn't be there and sort of, 00:09:08.31\00:09:09.84 going against the original design, 00:09:09.88\00:09:11.61 our foot was never designed to be cramped, 00:09:11.65\00:09:14.02 it was never designed to have all this stuff 00:09:14.05\00:09:16.22 we're doing to it, over a long period of time, 00:09:16.25\00:09:18.65 it puts trauma, damages the foot, 00:09:18.69\00:09:21.06 the foot has long term problems. 00:09:21.09\00:09:22.66 What about people that have a flatfoot? 00:09:22.69\00:09:24.79 Is there a flat shoe with no arches? 00:09:24.83\00:09:27.50 Is that okay for them? 00:09:27.53\00:09:29.10 Well, there is a condition known as flatfeet, you know, 00:09:29.13\00:09:30.47 where people have flatfeet, 00:09:30.50\00:09:31.83 they end up getting arch support, 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.30 to support their arch, so they do better. 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.00 And, you know, we do that some great technology now, 00:09:36.04\00:09:38.34 where we can get special shoes, that breathe easier 00:09:38.37\00:09:41.28 you know, the diabetics have special shoes 00:09:41.31\00:09:43.51 and I recommend them getting those shoes, 00:09:43.55\00:09:46.25 makes it less likely get a small crack 00:09:46.28\00:09:49.82 in their foot or whatever but I think 00:09:49.85\00:09:51.75 everyone needs to just pay attention 00:09:51.79\00:09:53.79 to their feet 00:09:53.82\00:09:55.16 and give it a little bit more care 00:09:55.19\00:09:56.52 and prevent some of these problems 00:09:56.56\00:09:58.06 that we're talking about. 00:09:58.09\00:09:59.43 I know, when I was doing some training, 00:09:59.46\00:10:01.16 I starting to run, I learned pretty quickly that 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.10 I need to start in small increments 00:10:04.13\00:10:05.97 and build up slowly, 00:10:06.00\00:10:07.37 otherwise my feet just couldn't handle it. 00:10:07.40\00:10:08.74 Right, and your feet, 00:10:08.77\00:10:10.11 remember your feet have muscles and ligaments 00:10:10.14\00:10:11.47 so they have to get stronger too 00:10:11.51\00:10:13.11 and the blood supply has to keep up with the demands 00:10:13.14\00:10:15.34 you put on your feet, feet are lot more complicated 00:10:15.38\00:10:18.81 and, you know, in our opening you said, 00:10:18.85\00:10:20.38 52 bones... 00:10:20.42\00:10:21.75 That's a lot of bones and if you think about it, 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.79 bones are bones, no matter where they're at. 00:10:23.82\00:10:26.25 So bones need to be strong with, you know, calcium 00:10:26.29\00:10:28.96 and there's a certain amount of things 00:10:28.99\00:10:30.43 you do to keep the bones strong, 00:10:30.46\00:10:31.86 we've talked about that, before you move the bones, 00:10:31.89\00:10:33.73 your water, vitamin D, you hydrate yourself, 00:10:33.76\00:10:36.70 get lots of calcium, 00:10:36.73\00:10:38.07 lots of those electrolytes that do it, 00:10:38.10\00:10:39.87 keep the blood supply to the bone healthy 00:10:39.90\00:10:42.24 and keep working the bone. 00:10:42.27\00:10:43.77 And I think that's one of the big things is, 00:10:43.81\00:10:45.51 we don't work our bones like our ancestors did. 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.11 Right. 00:10:48.14\00:10:49.48 And because of that, 00:10:49.51\00:10:50.85 we're seeing more chronic disease. 00:10:50.88\00:10:52.21 Yeah, we got another viewer 00:10:52.25\00:10:53.58 that writes in with the question, 00:10:53.62\00:10:54.95 they ask, what are the options for toe nail fungus? 00:10:54.98\00:10:57.12 You know, Nick, 00:10:57.15\00:10:58.55 that is probably the number one all time question 00:10:58.59\00:11:01.79 that comes in to Heartwise Ministries. 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.66 It's a big problem, huh. 00:11:03.69\00:11:05.26 Toe nail fungus, yeah, 00:11:05.29\00:11:06.63 no one likes to look down into a toe and see a fungus. 00:11:06.66\00:11:09.06 Right. 00:11:09.10\00:11:10.50 And unfortunately, you know, 00:11:10.53\00:11:11.90 this is sort of a two part answer, you know, 00:11:11.93\00:11:14.74 and there is a lot of different home remedies 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.07 that have been used, you know, 00:11:17.11\00:11:18.44 I've heard things from Vicks vaporub, 00:11:18.47\00:11:21.21 wrapping it in that to some anti fungus medicines in that, 00:11:21.24\00:11:26.72 the party line is that most of podiatrists recommend 00:11:26.75\00:11:29.45 a short course of antifungal medication. 00:11:29.48\00:11:31.95 Okay. 00:11:31.99\00:11:33.32 Now the antifungal medications can hurt the liver, 00:11:33.36\00:11:35.99 so they have to monitor the liver. 00:11:36.02\00:11:38.33 And at the same time, if you get rid of the fungus, 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.90 you have to get rid of the cause of the fungus, 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.57 so you have to make sure you're not passing fungus 00:11:43.60\00:11:45.93 from shoe to shoe and they usually recommend 00:11:45.97\00:11:47.67 some ultraviolet lighting that they can put in, 00:11:47.70\00:11:50.17 that will kill fungus in the shoes. 00:11:50.21\00:11:51.84 Okay. 00:11:51.87\00:11:53.21 Recommend different shoes, different changing of the, 00:11:53.24\00:11:57.55 whatever sock type wear you're doing 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.75 and also keeping the feet fairly dry, 00:11:59.78\00:12:02.68 so in addition to give the medicine, 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.05 they recommend those things as well. 00:12:04.09\00:12:06.32 There is some other home remedies, 00:12:06.35\00:12:08.16 I'm not sure, they've never had scientific studies 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.23 that show they help well but it's a big problem. 00:12:10.26\00:12:13.53 Now, the problem is if one toe nail is infected, 00:12:13.56\00:12:16.43 the fungus can jump to another toe nail. 00:12:16.46\00:12:19.03 Now another thing you can always do 00:12:19.07\00:12:20.40 is have the whole toe nail and the toe bed removed as well 00:12:20.44\00:12:23.77 and that's an option as well, 00:12:23.81\00:12:25.17 but this is a big problem but right now, 00:12:25.21\00:12:27.51 they're using medicines for a short period of time, 00:12:27.54\00:12:30.35 that's monitored closely then getting rid of the cause 00:12:30.38\00:12:32.91 of the fungal infection, 00:12:32.95\00:12:34.58 otherwise you take the medicine and guess what? 00:12:34.62\00:12:36.38 The fungus come back. 00:12:36.42\00:12:37.75 Yeah, you know, Dr. Haag actually mentioned 00:12:37.79\00:12:39.12 one other thing to me 00:12:39.15\00:12:40.49 that didn't make it into the video, 00:12:40.52\00:12:41.86 if you wear socks that are just white cotton socks, 00:12:41.89\00:12:43.69 that don't have a dye in them, that sometimes can help 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.56 'cause sometimes the dye can interact with the foot 00:12:45.59\00:12:48.66 and make your feet sweatier. 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.37 It's like a little bit of problem itself. 00:12:50.40\00:12:51.73 Yeah, and feet really aren't made to retain sweat. 00:12:51.77\00:12:54.20 'Cause when it retains moisture, you know, 00:12:54.24\00:12:56.10 that's where bugs like to live and things like to grow 00:12:56.14\00:12:59.07 and this little things like that and just, you know, 00:12:59.11\00:13:01.68 simple things as making sure 00:13:01.71\00:13:03.04 your toe nails are cut correctly. 00:13:03.08\00:13:04.71 That's a very important thing as well. 00:13:04.75\00:13:06.18 And that queues our next question here, 00:13:06.21\00:13:07.55 is surgery usually recommended for an ingrown toe nail? 00:13:07.58\00:13:10.52 Well, everyone handles ingrown toe nails differently 00:13:10.55\00:13:13.69 and I've had friends that will try to plough their nail out 00:13:13.72\00:13:17.09 and do everything they can 00:13:17.13\00:13:18.79 but, you know, you're in trouble 00:13:18.83\00:13:20.16 when it gets infected 00:13:20.20\00:13:21.53 and it hurts a lot of lot, but I say, you normally, 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.47 they can do some things that, you know, 00:13:24.50\00:13:25.93 to get it taking care of by podiatrist, 00:13:25.97\00:13:28.37 then get them to teach you how to cut the nail correctly, 00:13:28.40\00:13:31.27 but I would go to podiatrist for that 00:13:31.31\00:13:32.97 'cause you could actually get an infection of the toe 00:13:33.01\00:13:35.54 if you don't get that taking care of well. 00:13:35.58\00:13:37.21 Yeah, and that can be a really sensitive area too, 00:13:37.25\00:13:39.35 if you get an ingrown toe nail and it's infected, 00:13:39.38\00:13:41.55 it hurts a lot. 00:13:41.58\00:13:43.22 It hurts a lot and then makes it 00:13:43.25\00:13:44.59 that much, you know, 00:13:44.62\00:13:45.95 if you cut it right and get the, you know, 00:13:45.99\00:13:47.39 they put some medicine on it 00:13:47.42\00:13:48.76 that helps it from curling under it, 00:13:48.79\00:13:50.13 that's a thing to do. 00:13:50.16\00:13:51.73 Yeah, well, Dr. Marcum, thank you for all the advice 00:13:51.76\00:13:53.70 and thoughts on foot pain. 00:13:53.73\00:13:55.33 My pleasure and the big take home point is, 00:13:55.36\00:13:57.63 you know, try to take care of your feet, you know, 00:13:57.67\00:14:00.37 get back to the original plan and when there's a problem, 00:14:00.40\00:14:02.84 get it taken care of as quick as you can 00:14:02.87\00:14:04.87 and try to keep the over all body healthy 00:14:04.91\00:14:07.14 that'll help keep the foot healthy as well. 00:14:07.18\00:14:09.28 Right, and we wanna invite you if you have questions, 00:14:09.31\00:14:11.85 visit Heartwiseministries.org 00:14:11.88\00:14:14.28 where you can ask and get answers 00:14:14.32\00:14:15.92 for your health questions 00:14:15.95\00:14:17.29 and also put your prayer requests on there 00:14:17.32\00:14:18.79 and we'll pray for you every week, 00:14:18.82\00:14:20.36 we'll be back in just a moment. 00:14:20.39\00:14:21.72 We have been talking about the feet 00:14:31.53\00:14:35.07 and what are the take home points we must remember today, 00:14:35.10\00:14:38.27 well, I think from listening to the program, 00:14:38.31\00:14:40.94 you'd have to say, we have to have good shoes. 00:14:40.98\00:14:43.98 Shoes that take care of our feet 00:14:44.01\00:14:46.11 and we have to spend more time on choosing those shoes 00:14:46.15\00:14:50.29 and don't worry about 00:14:50.32\00:14:51.65 if it costs a little extra money, 00:14:51.69\00:14:53.02 it's better to have your feet feeling well 00:14:53.05\00:14:54.99 than have the latest in fashion. 00:14:55.02\00:14:57.69 Another important thing 00:14:57.73\00:14:59.09 is keep your entire body healthy, 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.73 this will also help keep your feet 00:15:01.76\00:15:03.93 the healthiest they can be, no one likes chronic pain 00:15:03.97\00:15:07.47 and if your feet are hurting all the time, 00:15:07.50\00:15:09.50 even though it might not be an immediate danger to you, 00:15:09.54\00:15:12.57 you need to see about getting that checked out, 00:15:12.61\00:15:15.58 the doctor that does that is a podiatrist. 00:15:15.61\00:15:18.48 I wanna pray with you today. 00:15:18.51\00:15:20.42 Father God, please be with us as we care for our bodies, 00:15:20.45\00:15:23.85 we hope that no one has pain 00:15:23.89\00:15:25.45 and just keep us in your love is our prayer. 00:15:25.49\00:15:28.09 Amen. 00:15:28.12\00:15:29.96 Please join us again, check our website out, 00:15:29.99\00:15:32.59 that's Heartwiseministries.org, wishing you the best of health. 00:15:32.63\00:15:36.87
