Welcome back! On today's program 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 we've been talking about the place for modern medicine 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.07 in your life and this is something that we've received 00:00:05.10\00:00:07.67 a lot of questions on, isn't it, Dr. Marcum. 00:00:07.70\00:00:09.10 In fact, "Heartwise Ministries" talks a lot about 00:00:09.37\00:00:12.87 modern medicine, there's a place for 00:00:12.91\00:00:15.24 modern medicine and we acknowledge that, 00:00:15.28\00:00:17.81 but there's a place for lifestyle, 00:00:17.85\00:00:19.61 and getting at the cause. 00:00:19.65\00:00:21.65 But I consider getting at the cause, hopefully, 00:00:21.68\00:00:24.52 that is modern medicine. Right 00:00:24.55\00:00:26.39 You know, but unfortunately the way medicine practices 00:00:26.42\00:00:28.82 it not always does that, it treats symptoms. 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.33 But I think, what we like to do at Heartwise, 00:00:31.36\00:00:34.20 that is sort of gives us a little distinctiveness, 00:00:34.23\00:00:36.67 is that we point to the Heavenly Father 00:00:36.70\00:00:38.83 as the Ultimate Physician. 00:00:38.87\00:00:40.37 Remember, doctors don't heal, God heals, 00:00:40.40\00:00:43.87 and God gives people the ability to heal. 00:00:43.91\00:00:46.17 So all power and all healing and all respect and awe 00:00:46.21\00:00:50.85 comes from that relationship we have with God, 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.18 and I try to really let people know that that is the most 00:00:53.21\00:00:56.25 important thing you can have... 00:00:56.28\00:00:57.82 Because even if you have a disease, Nick, 00:00:57.85\00:00:59.75 that's devastating, as long as you have that 00:00:59.79\00:01:03.02 relationship, you can have healing... 00:01:03.06\00:01:06.13 you know, it might be in heaven, 00:01:06.16\00:01:07.60 but you're going to have that healing and that's so important. 00:01:07.63\00:01:10.47 So I want those that want to learn more about this topic, 00:01:10.50\00:01:13.27 you can go to our website: heartwiseministries.org 00:01:13.30\00:01:16.24 We also believe in the treatment of prayer. 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.97 God answers prayers, God changes lives through 00:01:19.01\00:01:21.41 prayer and a lot of time, Nick, I've seen prayer 00:01:21.44\00:01:24.48 help people understand when to use modern technology. 00:01:24.51\00:01:28.12 I had a person come in, the other day, to the office, 00:01:28.15\00:01:30.65 and they had a rhythm called, "atrial fibrillation." 00:01:30.69\00:01:33.72 The top part of the heart was going fast and the bottom part; 00:01:33.76\00:01:37.13 1 in 3 strokes come from this rhythm. Really? 00:01:37.16\00:01:41.26 Yeah, and about 10% of older people have this rhythm. 00:01:41.30\00:01:45.53 So they really didn't want to take any medicine 00:01:45.57\00:01:48.17 to thin out the blood, they did not want to do this. 00:01:48.20\00:01:52.27 And so I said, "Why don't you pray about it, 00:01:52.31\00:01:55.61 and ask God about it," and give them the reasons, 00:01:55.64\00:01:58.68 the risk and the benefits and after thorough discussion 00:01:58.71\00:02:02.15 through that prayer, I believe that God helped to 00:02:02.18\00:02:04.29 show them that this is a place 00:02:04.32\00:02:05.72 that He can help use modern medicine. 00:02:05.75\00:02:08.82 So God can use modern medicine to help His people. Right 00:02:08.86\00:02:12.43 God can give power to make 00:02:12.46\00:02:13.93 lifestyle changes to help see to it. 00:02:13.96\00:02:15.90 Now I like to think that is modern medicine, 00:02:15.93\00:02:18.37 but unfortunately our system doesn't practice that way. Right 00:02:18.40\00:02:21.77 And I'd like to think that some day, 00:02:21.80\00:02:23.64 as we look back in history, they're going to say, 00:02:23.67\00:02:25.24 "You know, the doctors that took care of George Washington, 00:02:25.27\00:02:28.91 if they didn't take the blood out of George, 00:02:29.78\00:02:31.45 you know - they weren't a good doctor." Sure 00:02:31.48\00:02:33.35 And if you weren't part of that crowd, 00:02:33.38\00:02:34.72 they would say, "Hey, you need to leave." 00:02:34.75\00:02:36.45 Even in the 30s, Nick, they used to recommend 00:02:37.05\00:02:39.79 cigarettes for asthma. Yeah right 00:02:39.82\00:02:41.99 So some day, I'm hoping they will look back on 00:02:42.42\00:02:44.33 physicians that try to treat from a biblical perspective 00:02:44.36\00:02:47.40 using God as the guide, they'll say, "Wow, these guys 00:02:47.43\00:02:50.37 really knew what they were doing." 00:02:50.40\00:02:51.90 There was a place for medicine, 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.27 these guys really did know what they were doing. 00:02:53.30\00:02:54.64 No one listened to them then, but there was a place for this. 00:02:54.67\00:02:58.94 And that's what we try to do, is offer that balance 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.94 and, you know, we don't know everything... 00:03:01.98\00:03:03.58 We just give the best answers we can, prayerfully, 00:03:03.61\00:03:06.35 trying to use God's Scriptures 00:03:06.38\00:03:09.48 as a guide, and that's what we're going to do 00:03:09.52\00:03:11.45 with these questions today too. Right 00:03:11.49\00:03:13.02 Well let's jump right in here... 00:03:13.05\00:03:14.39 The first viewer that we're going to answer their question. 00:03:14.42\00:03:16.73 The question is: "I have gallstones and have 00:03:16.76\00:03:19.19 had pain in my belly and my doctor wants to perform 00:03:19.23\00:03:22.33 surgery, but I'm really reluctant." 00:03:22.36\00:03:24.47 "What are some other options?" 00:03:24.50\00:03:26.43 Well, unfortunately, the gallbladder is an organ 00:03:26.47\00:03:29.67 that digests a chemical called "bile," 00:03:29.70\00:03:33.84 and it digests that and sometimes stones form in it, 00:03:33.88\00:03:39.01 and the stones can't get out and it blocks up the duct. 00:03:39.05\00:03:42.18 When the stones can't get out, it can predispose to 00:03:42.22\00:03:44.75 lots of pain because of the pressure. 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.92 You could also get infections. 00:03:46.96\00:03:48.56 So when you're having symptoms from the gallbladder, 00:03:48.59\00:03:51.36 really the natural methods are not 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.56 going to help you at that point. Right 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.70 Now sometimes, if the stones are little, 00:03:55.76\00:03:57.83 you can do some things that will help you, 00:03:57.87\00:03:59.77 and we recommend the whole food, plant-based diet. 00:03:59.80\00:04:03.30 You know, just general healthy living, 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.17 but it has gotten to the place where you do have stones, 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.98 and some people have genetic stones. Oh okay 00:04:07.01\00:04:09.31 If you have that, then I think the benefits of surgery 00:04:09.34\00:04:12.88 would outweigh the risk. 00:04:12.91\00:04:14.25 And, we got some great modern medicine for gallbladders 00:04:14.28\00:04:17.29 where they don't even have to cut you, 00:04:17.32\00:04:18.75 they do it through ports. 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.16 They use 4 ports and they go and we call it 00:04:20.19\00:04:22.76 "laparoscopic surgery." 00:04:22.79\00:04:24.69 They look in it laparoscopically and through some very 00:04:24.73\00:04:27.10 small holes, they can take the gallbladder out. 00:04:27.13\00:04:29.83 Before, it used to be a big incision; 00:04:29.86\00:04:31.80 the patient would have to be in up to a week, 00:04:31.83\00:04:34.10 but now, it's almost outpatient surgery now. 00:04:34.14\00:04:36.94 So this is a good place for modern medicine, 00:04:36.97\00:04:39.27 but remember, it doesn't fix the problem... 00:04:39.31\00:04:41.11 Modern medicine is good for genetics that we can't overcome, 00:04:41.14\00:04:44.41 and for - maybe we didn't have some good habits 00:04:44.45\00:04:46.51 earlier in our life, but now we want to 00:04:46.55\00:04:48.35 get on some good habits. Right 00:04:48.38\00:04:49.78 So this will help us to have more time, 00:04:49.82\00:04:51.65 maybe we can avoid an infection, lots of pain. 00:04:51.69\00:04:53.96 So this is a good place for modern medicine... 00:04:53.99\00:04:55.92 if you are having symptoms, the gallstones are big; 00:04:55.96\00:04:58.99 I think this is a place to really consider having it out. 00:04:59.03\00:05:02.23 Gallstones is one of those things that we might 00:05:02.26\00:05:03.70 put in the emergency category where it's too late 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.43 for natural remedies sometimes and surgery is a good option. 00:05:06.47\00:05:09.17 Really, what will help them know that is the size of the 00:05:09.20\00:05:12.17 gallbladder duct, whether the enzymes are 00:05:12.21\00:05:15.48 abnormal and whether you're having symptoms, 00:05:15.51\00:05:17.35 but if it gets to the place where you're having lots of 00:05:17.38\00:05:18.95 pain, lots of fever, the stones are big, then that's usually 00:05:18.98\00:05:22.82 a place where your surgeon would recommend having a 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.65 cholecystectomy, where they take it out laparoscopically now. 00:05:25.69\00:05:28.96 All right, we've got another question that has come in 00:05:28.99\00:05:30.99 that asks: "What are some of the symptoms of an infection?" 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.16 Yeah, and that's another great place for modern medicine 00:05:34.20\00:05:36.46 because before people had infections, they would die 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.77 from the infections. 00:05:39.80\00:05:41.67 So the symptoms mean that their 00:05:41.70\00:05:44.27 immune system is losing the battle. 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.68 Now we want to teach people to have strong immune systems, 00:05:46.71\00:05:49.51 but, you know, sometimes no matter how strong you are, 00:05:49.54\00:05:52.08 you can get overcome with infections. 00:05:52.11\00:05:54.35 We have bacterial infections, we treat those with antibiotics. 00:05:54.38\00:05:58.92 We have viral infections, we have some antivirals. 00:05:58.95\00:06:01.62 The flu is a virus - sometimes we just let 00:06:01.66\00:06:03.49 them run their course. 00:06:03.53\00:06:05.16 We have fungal infections. 00:06:05.19\00:06:06.59 We have parasitic infections, lots of infections! 00:06:06.63\00:06:10.03 But when the infections overcomes our immune system, 00:06:10.07\00:06:12.60 that's not the time to say, "Well, let's do something 00:06:12.63\00:06:15.57 to help us out." 00:06:15.60\00:06:17.27 The symptom of an infection might be "fevers," 00:06:17.31\00:06:20.24 that's the body itself trying to knock down the infection. 00:06:20.28\00:06:22.98 A fever would be one - a person would be weak. 00:06:23.01\00:06:26.65 Depending on where the infection is, that might clue someone is. 00:06:26.68\00:06:30.12 If a person has an infection in the bowels, 00:06:30.15\00:06:32.15 they might have diarrhea. 00:06:32.19\00:06:34.36 Of course, if you have it on the hand, 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.39 you might see red streaks, you might have a fever. 00:06:36.42\00:06:39.66 If you have an infection in an ear, 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.43 you might have an earache. 00:06:41.46\00:06:43.26 If you have an infection in the back of your throat, 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.10 you might see pus back there 00:06:45.13\00:06:46.70 or you might actually see the infection. Right 00:06:46.74\00:06:49.04 So symptoms of infection are usually a fever... 00:06:49.07\00:06:52.97 Sometimes if the infection gets in the bloodstream, 00:06:53.01\00:06:55.24 you can have rigors which is shaking all over. 00:06:55.28\00:06:57.68 You can have a fast heartbeat 00:06:57.71\00:06:59.41 as the body tries to compensate for an infection. 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.02 So these are just some symptoms of an infection, 00:07:02.05\00:07:04.35 and sometimes you'll see it on your body. 00:07:04.39\00:07:06.32 If it's inside your body, you can't see that; 00:07:06.35\00:07:08.92 sometimes you might have pain in a certain part of the body 00:07:08.96\00:07:11.53 from the infection, but usually you have fevers. 00:07:11.56\00:07:14.30 Fevers and a fast heart rate are some of the characteristic 00:07:14.33\00:07:17.20 signs of an infection. 00:07:17.23\00:07:18.57 Now lots of other things can do it too, 00:07:18.60\00:07:20.14 but infections are right at the high end of causing fevers. 00:07:20.17\00:07:23.61 We've got another question that actually talks about the 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.37 pacemaker which you showed us earlier. 00:07:26.41\00:07:29.44 They say, "My mom is 95 and has a pacemaker, 00:07:29.48\00:07:32.45 how will I know when it needs to be replaced?" 00:07:32.48\00:07:35.85 Do you have to replace these every certain amount of years? 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.29 How does that work? Yeah Nick... 00:07:38.32\00:07:39.65 They have a battery in it and pacemakers, again, 00:07:39.69\00:07:42.09 are a place for modern medicine because 00:07:42.12\00:07:43.59 if she would not have had the pacemaker, 00:07:43.63\00:07:45.09 years ago her heart would have stopped. Right 00:07:45.13\00:07:47.43 But every 6, 7 or 8 years, depending on how much it is, 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.70 we check the battery function of the pacemaker with the device, 00:07:50.73\00:07:54.30 we check on the phone every month. 00:07:54.34\00:07:56.37 In person, we usually check once or twice a year. 00:07:56.40\00:07:58.91 So we can tell when the battery needs to be replaced, 00:07:58.94\00:08:01.88 and we get the pacemaker replaced long before. 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.45 It's sort of like changing a car battery, Nick. Right 00:08:04.48\00:08:06.48 You know, you sort of can tell it needs to be changed 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.82 you put the new battery in, you hook the wires up, 00:08:08.85\00:08:10.72 and it's a one day procedure. 00:08:10.75\00:08:12.39 It's a lot easier replacing the battery 00:08:12.42\00:08:14.72 than it is putting in the leads. 00:08:14.76\00:08:17.03 So we check it regularly in the office 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.99 and that gives us a feel how much battery life it has in it. 00:08:19.03\00:08:23.23 Our next question is kind of similar... 00:08:23.26\00:08:25.50 Someone has had a cardiac stent that is 2 years old, 00:08:25.53\00:08:28.24 and they are taking a blood thinner, 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.11 and they are wondering... Will they need to take the 00:08:30.14\00:08:32.07 blood thinner for the rest of their life. 00:08:32.11\00:08:33.98 Yeah, and again, remember stents are needed 00:08:34.01\00:08:37.71 in emergency situations sometimes. Right 00:08:37.75\00:08:39.91 But when we have a stent in, we've changed 00:08:39.95\00:08:42.05 one problem for another problem. 00:08:42.08\00:08:43.82 So we might have had coronary disease or a heart attack, 00:08:43.85\00:08:46.25 but now we have stent disease because a stent 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.72 actually damages the blood vessel. 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.93 And when the blood vessel is damaged, 00:08:50.96\00:08:52.99 Guess what happens? You'll want to clot. 00:08:53.06\00:08:55.03 You know, if I took my reflex camera and cut you and 00:08:55.06\00:08:59.13 damaged you, your blood would want to clot. Right 00:08:59.17\00:09:01.80 And if it wants to clot, that's good, 00:09:01.84\00:09:04.31 but if it's inside a blood vessel, 00:09:04.34\00:09:05.97 it keeps blood from flowing downstream. Right 00:09:06.01\00:09:08.44 That's bad - so when a stent goes in, 00:09:08.48\00:09:11.35 the blood wants to clot... so, depending on where the 00:09:11.38\00:09:14.05 stent is, how big it is and other circumstances, 00:09:14.08\00:09:17.49 your doctor will probably want to put you on some type 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.79 of blood thinner medicine. 00:09:19.82\00:09:21.52 There's one out there, the mildest one is called "aspirin." 00:09:21.56\00:09:24.76 We have one that's usually the first year 00:09:24.79\00:09:26.76 that they take the stent in, the healing the first year, 00:09:26.80\00:09:30.50 what happens is the stent sees the blood, 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.93 but the blood coats itself over it, 00:09:32.97\00:09:36.00 and that gives it more protection because the blood 00:09:36.04\00:09:37.84 stream does not see the stent as easily. 00:09:37.87\00:09:40.34 But during that first year, we give extra protection 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.04 with blood thinners - one is called, "Plavix," 00:09:43.08\00:09:44.91 another one is called, "Brilinta," 00:09:44.95\00:09:47.25 and there are several other types of blood thinners 00:09:47.28\00:09:49.12 that we add to that Plavix. 00:09:49.15\00:09:50.82 And usually after the year, depending on the circumstances, 00:09:50.85\00:09:53.86 we can cut back to an aspirin. 00:09:53.89\00:09:56.46 There are some circumstances where we say, "No, 00:09:56.49\00:09:58.89 we think the risk of being on blood thinners 00:09:58.93\00:10:01.70 are worth the benefits," and we have them on more than one, 00:10:01.73\00:10:04.03 and that would be in a smoker 00:10:04.07\00:10:05.80 or if the artery was in a bad position. 00:10:05.83\00:10:08.47 We'd say the risk of something happening within the stent 00:10:08.50\00:10:10.97 is greater than the risk of taking blood thinners. 00:10:11.01\00:10:14.44 And, of course, the main risk of blood thinners is bleeding. 00:10:14.48\00:10:17.91 Now we don't like to give any medicines including 00:10:17.95\00:10:20.65 blood thinners, but sometimes the benefits 00:10:20.68\00:10:23.39 of the blood thinners outweigh the risk of the blood thinners 00:10:23.42\00:10:26.65 in some stent cases, but it's a great place 00:10:26.69\00:10:28.89 for modern medicine because if the wouldn't have had 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.79 the stent, they might have died from a heart attack. 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.79 Now we know that water is important to the consistency 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.60 of your blood - is that also really important 00:10:35.63\00:10:37.83 after you've had a stent in? 00:10:37.87\00:10:40.00 It's always important to drink water. 00:10:40.04\00:10:41.40 Always! Regardless of what procedure you've had. 00:10:41.44\00:10:43.67 Sixty to 65% of our body is water. 00:10:43.71\00:10:47.31 When you don't drink enough water, guess what? 00:10:47.34\00:10:49.44 Stress happens in the body. 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.05 When stress happens long-term, it does damage... 00:10:51.08\00:10:53.45 Every cell needs water to work, so, yes, 00:10:53.48\00:10:55.55 it's important to keep the blood thin. 00:10:55.58\00:10:57.62 About 80 to 85% of the blood stream is water. Yeah! 00:10:57.65\00:11:01.89 So, you know, if you are passing out and getting dizzy, 00:11:01.92\00:11:05.23 low blood pressure - you'll want to drink water. 00:11:05.26\00:11:07.13 So it helps lots of different things. Right 00:11:07.16\00:11:09.36 But that's, again Nick, that's a place for modern medicine. 00:11:09.40\00:11:12.73 Not that it fixed the problem, but it helps deal with 00:11:12.77\00:11:15.64 the problem, so now we can work with that patient and say, 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.71 "Listen, you had coronary disease, 00:11:17.74\00:11:19.24 now, unfortunately, you have stent disease, 00:11:19.27\00:11:21.11 but what can we do to help you never need 00:11:21.14\00:11:24.81 to have another stent ever again? Right 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.12 We've got another question here and it says: 00:11:27.15\00:11:29.48 "I used to smoke and I have COPD; I wear an oxygen mask 00:11:29.52\00:11:33.72 at night, should I wear it also during the day?" 00:11:33.76\00:11:36.89 Well COPD is "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease," 00:11:36.93\00:11:40.80 that's where the lungs have been damaged. 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.56 Sometimes most likely it has been damaged by smoke, 00:11:42.60\00:11:46.17 but some inhalants can cause it as well. 00:11:46.20\00:11:49.47 Some chronic allergies can cause it. 00:11:49.50\00:11:51.41 Sometimes genetic things can cause it. Right 00:11:51.44\00:11:53.64 There is an Alpha antitrypsin deficiency that can cause 00:11:53.68\00:11:57.28 damage to the lungs, but anyway, 00:11:57.31\00:11:58.95 again, this is a place that's great for modern medicine. 00:11:58.98\00:12:02.08 You mentioned the body loves oxygen, 00:12:02.12\00:12:04.59 what's another thing the body loves? 00:12:04.62\00:12:06.35 Oxygen! Yeah, oxygen. 00:12:06.39\00:12:08.99 Water! Water and oxygen, 00:12:09.02\00:12:10.83 the basics. Right 00:12:10.86\00:12:12.19 So the body loves oxygen, so if you're running low 00:12:12.23\00:12:15.30 on oxygen, we can measure it. 00:12:15.33\00:12:16.90 It's a great place for modern medicine. 00:12:16.93\00:12:19.33 What did we do before we had 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.00 modern medicine and modern oxygen? 00:12:21.04\00:12:23.04 People would run out of oxygen, they would gradually get worse, 00:12:23.07\00:12:26.21 the cells wouldn't have what they would need, 00:12:26.24\00:12:27.68 and they would die premature deaths. Right 00:12:27.71\00:12:30.31 So I want everyone to remember, we need oxygen, 00:12:30.35\00:12:32.58 water and another thing we always need is enough rest. 00:12:32.61\00:12:35.55 Those are sort of the basics of care. 00:12:35.58\00:12:37.55 But again, this is another great place for modern medicine. 00:12:37.59\00:12:40.86 The lungs might have been damaged and he 00:12:40.89\00:12:42.89 can still live a fulfilling life. 00:12:42.92\00:12:44.49 He can help himself to be healthy. 00:12:44.53\00:12:45.86 Now other things that can help oxygen delivery 00:12:45.89\00:12:48.76 is taking deep breaths... holding it... 2 or 3 seconds, 00:12:48.80\00:12:53.44 letting out slowly, learning to deep breathe 00:12:53.47\00:12:55.64 that will help oxygen open up the air sacs 00:12:55.67\00:12:58.14 so we would get more oxygen. 00:12:58.17\00:12:59.51 An exercise program because it makes the blood vessels 00:12:59.54\00:13:01.94 do better. 00:13:01.98\00:13:03.31 So all those are little things in addition to oxygen 00:13:03.35\00:13:05.58 so he might not need to wear oxygen quite as much. 00:13:05.61\00:13:08.38 We've got another viewer who asks: 00:13:08.42\00:13:10.12 What actually is a "ventilator" and if one is put on 00:13:10.15\00:13:13.12 the device, is it permanent?" 00:13:13.15\00:13:14.49 Yeah and this is another place for modern medicine. 00:13:14.52\00:13:18.03 I see lots of people that are on ventilators 00:13:18.06\00:13:20.63 because their lungs don't work well. 00:13:20.66\00:13:22.43 So we sort of put them on a ventilator to see if we 00:13:22.46\00:13:25.03 can get the lungs better. 00:13:25.07\00:13:26.43 If it's due to heart failure or fluid in the lungs, 00:13:26.47\00:13:28.84 sometimes we give them fluid pills and get their heart better 00:13:28.87\00:13:31.41 and they don't need to be on the ventilator very long. 00:13:31.44\00:13:33.54 Sometimes it's due to infection. 00:13:33.58\00:13:35.34 Some people actually have trauma to their lungs 00:13:35.38\00:13:38.18 and they pop a lung - that's called a "pneumothorax." 00:13:38.21\00:13:40.95 I was taking care of a bicycle rider about 3 months ago, 00:13:40.98\00:13:44.55 he was riding his bike; he went over the handlebars... 00:13:44.59\00:13:47.46 I know you ride the bike. 00:13:47.49\00:13:48.82 Yeah, that's happened to me once or twice. 00:13:48.86\00:13:50.19 Yeah and he actually popped his lung. Really 00:13:50.23\00:13:51.93 And when he popped his lung, all the air rushed out 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.36 of his lung and squished it. 00:13:54.40\00:13:56.60 And his other lung didn't do very good, 00:13:56.63\00:13:58.53 and he needed to be on the ventilator for a short 00:13:58.57\00:14:00.30 period of time until we put a chest tube in 00:14:00.34\00:14:02.70 and then his lung expanded again. 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.74 So that was a place for modern medicine. 00:14:04.77\00:14:06.71 He is doing fine today. 00:14:06.74\00:14:08.08 He is not taking as many chances on his bicycle, 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.85 but, yes, a ventilator might not be permanent 00:14:10.88\00:14:13.42 if we can get at the underlying cause. 00:14:13.45\00:14:15.58 Dialysis is another one, that's another place 00:14:16.69\00:14:19.19 for modern medicine because before people had these 00:14:19.22\00:14:21.39 interventions, they would pass away. 00:14:21.42\00:14:23.29 Now, it doesn't necessarily fix the problem, 00:14:23.32\00:14:25.99 but it buys us time until we can hopefully 00:14:26.03\00:14:28.76 fix the underlying cause of the illness. 00:14:28.80\00:14:30.70 So ventilators maybe not permanently, 00:14:30.73\00:14:32.97 depending on what caused you to be on it. 00:14:33.00\00:14:34.80 We have time just for one more question... 00:14:34.84\00:14:37.17 It says, "I have polycystic kidney disease, 00:14:37.21\00:14:40.31 they expect dialysis will be needed, 00:14:40.34\00:14:42.11 are there other options to dialysis?" 00:14:42.14\00:14:43.95 Yeah and that's another great question for modern medicine. 00:14:43.98\00:14:47.52 Before we had dialysis and transplants, 00:14:48.12\00:14:51.75 guess what happened? 00:14:51.79\00:14:53.22 People would die of kidney disease 00:14:53.25\00:14:55.29 like polycystic kidney disease. 00:14:55.32\00:14:57.23 That's often genetically passed from one person. 00:14:57.26\00:14:59.79 You get lots of cysts or fluid-filled cavities 00:14:59.83\00:15:02.20 in the kidneys so the kidney doesn't work well. 00:15:02.23\00:15:04.97 Sometimes the kidney function goes down so much 00:15:05.00\00:15:08.17 that they need dialysis. 00:15:08.37\00:15:10.54 But is there an alternative dialysis? 00:15:10.57\00:15:13.14 Yes, and that's transplants and we have lots of places 00:15:13.17\00:15:16.95 for modern medicine where we can transplant an organ. 00:15:16.98\00:15:19.45 We have kidneys that can be transplanted, 00:15:19.48\00:15:21.32 corneas that can be transplanted. 00:15:21.35\00:15:23.59 They can transplant livers. 00:15:23.62\00:15:25.49 We could transplant heart and lungs, 00:15:25.52\00:15:27.82 and we don't like to do that, but transplants are possible 00:15:27.86\00:15:31.29 in some situations and this is 00:15:31.33\00:15:33.13 a great place for modern medicine. 00:15:33.16\00:15:35.36 Does the transplant or the dialysis take away 00:15:35.40\00:15:38.47 the polycystic kidneys? No, it does not, 00:15:38.50\00:15:41.10 but it gives this person another chance to do well, 00:15:41.14\00:15:44.17 overcome some genetics, overcome something bad that 00:15:44.21\00:15:46.94 has happened in their life. 00:15:46.98\00:15:48.31 So this is another great place for modern medicine. 00:15:48.34\00:15:51.15 Well it sounds like we are very fortunate to have 00:15:51.18\00:15:53.08 all the advancements and medicines that we do, 00:15:53.11\00:15:55.15 and there is definitely a lot of places where 00:15:55.18\00:15:57.15 it's really important to use modern medicine. It is 00:15:57.19\00:16:00.22 All right, we're going to be back in just a moment as 00:16:00.26\00:16:02.59 Dr. Marcum closes the program with prayer - stay with us. 00:16:02.62\00:16:05.79 Modern medicine can definitely be overwhelming. 00:16:09.66\00:16:16.40 You see all these advances in genetics and new procedures 00:16:16.44\00:16:20.71 and new pills and we've talked a little bit today 00:16:20.78\00:16:23.24 about the place for modern medicine... 00:16:23.28\00:16:25.45 And there is a place for modern medicine, 00:16:25.48\00:16:27.65 and that place is to help get us over the hump, 00:16:27.68\00:16:30.05 to help a disaster, to help bad genetics, 00:16:30.09\00:16:32.12 there is a place for modern medicine. 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.02 I hope you never need modern medicine, but thank goodness 00:16:34.06\00:16:37.33 God has given us men and women to advance technology 00:16:37.36\00:16:40.73 to do these types of things. 00:16:40.76\00:16:42.10 And who knows where modern 00:16:42.13\00:16:44.03 technology will go in the future... 00:16:44.07\00:16:46.33 But the important thing that I really want us all to focus on 00:16:46.37\00:16:49.44 is that Ultimate Prescription that we have 00:16:49.47\00:16:51.41 with the Heavenly Father. 00:16:51.44\00:16:52.77 So even if modern medicine 00:16:52.81\00:16:54.14 doesn't work out, we still have hope. 00:16:54.18\00:16:56.18 We still know that there is going to be 00:16:56.21\00:16:57.55 permanent healing. So let's pray together... 00:16:57.58\00:17:00.58 Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving us modern 00:17:00.62\00:17:03.69 medicine and giving us the wisdom through You 00:17:03.72\00:17:06.22 to learn how to use it appropriately, Father... 00:17:06.25\00:17:08.76 And we want to thank You for being a God that loves us 00:17:08.79\00:17:11.93 and takes care of us and wants to enter into a healing 00:17:11.96\00:17:14.56 relationship with us, Father, and there might be some 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.73 out there that need You in a special way today. 00:17:16.77\00:17:19.73 We want to pray for them that You be especially near to them 00:17:19.77\00:17:22.57 and speak to their hearts. 00:17:22.60\00:17:24.21 And thank You for giving us this opportunity to serve You today 00:17:24.24\00:17:27.48 is our humble prayer... Amen 00:17:27.51\00:17:29.54
