Have you ever known someone 00:00:17.08\00:00:18.41 that just did not want to go to their doctor? 00:00:18.45\00:00:20.92 Our doctors really do have an important role in our health. 00:00:20.95\00:00:23.85 You don't want to miss this program - stay right there. 00:00:23.89\00:00:26.52 I'm Dr. James Marcum, 00:00:27.29\00:00:29.06 are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:29.09\00:00:32.59 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problem? 00:00:32.63\00:00:35.26 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:35.30\00:00:38.03 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:38.07\00:00:43.61 Thank you for joining us on today's program. 00:00:43.64\00:00:45.41 My name is Nick Evenson, and today, 00:00:45.44\00:00:47.31 we're talking about the place 00:00:47.34\00:00:49.01 for modern medicine and our health. 00:00:49.04\00:00:51.15 And Dr. Marcum, thank you for joining us on the program, 00:00:51.18\00:00:53.58 and let's hear what you have to say about this. 00:00:53.62\00:00:55.32 Well, you know, Nick, there's an important place for 00:00:55.35\00:00:58.02 modern medicine and there's also an important place for us being 00:00:58.05\00:01:01.69 our own best doctors and we're going to 00:01:01.72\00:01:03.12 discuss this a little bit today. 00:01:03.16\00:01:06.49 Do you go to a doctor on a regular basis? 00:01:06.53\00:01:09.06 You know, not as regular as I should. 00:01:09.10\00:01:12.13 Okay, well a lot of people do not go to the doctor 00:01:12.17\00:01:14.70 on a regular basis and this is a problem. 00:01:14.74\00:01:17.44 Why go to a doctor on a regular basis? 00:01:17.47\00:01:19.51 Well, sometimes the doctors can help point you 00:01:19.54\00:01:22.41 in the right direction healthwise. 00:01:22.44\00:01:24.61 You might be led astray, they can help identify 00:01:24.65\00:01:27.55 problems before they become big problems. 00:01:27.58\00:01:30.49 One of the biggest problems we have in our world today is 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.46 coronary artery disease - that's a disease that starts 00:01:33.49\00:01:36.52 in our youth and it's going on years and years until 00:01:36.56\00:01:39.73 something bad happens like a heart attack. 00:01:39.76\00:01:41.60 Well, a doctor might point you in the right way of nutrition 00:01:41.63\00:01:44.17 or exercise or cholesterol. 00:01:44.20\00:01:46.40 Blood pressure is another one that is a silent killer. Right 00:01:46.43\00:01:49.27 Early detection of cancer... all this. 00:01:49.30\00:01:52.31 So basically, if we can find something early 00:01:52.34\00:01:55.38 and nip it in the bud, it's always better. 00:01:55.41\00:01:59.21 So how often do you recommend that we see our doctors? 00:01:59.25\00:02:01.25 Well, it's according to how old you are. 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.82 In the 20s, you probably need to go every 4 or 5 years, 00:02:03.85\00:02:07.26 and have some screening tests. 00:02:07.29\00:02:08.62 By the time you get to the 30s, you'll want to go more often 00:02:08.66\00:02:10.83 unless you have health problems. 00:02:10.86\00:02:13.23 If you have health problems or concerns, 00:02:13.26\00:02:14.73 it's even better to go earlier, but now there are 00:02:14.76\00:02:17.70 lots of places that work that do well in the screening 00:02:17.73\00:02:20.50 that can screen you for these similar things 00:02:20.54\00:02:22.40 as there are very useful programs as well. Right 00:02:22.44\00:02:24.64 They can screen your blood pressure, 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.31 your blood work, ask you some questions to see 00:02:26.34\00:02:28.61 if you're at high risk categories. 00:02:28.64\00:02:31.01 So I think going to the doctor... 00:02:31.05\00:02:32.38 one of the things is if they help prevent problems, 00:02:32.41\00:02:34.55 it's very useful. Yeah 00:02:34.58\00:02:36.22 Sometimes treating symptoms is not so good 00:02:36.25\00:02:39.32 unless we get at the core of the problem. 00:02:39.35\00:02:41.42 So that's very important. Right 00:02:41.46\00:02:43.16 Now, modern medicine is good for dealing with disasters, 00:02:43.19\00:02:48.20 and let's think back through the years, 00:02:48.23\00:02:49.76 some of the most important discoveries 00:02:49.80\00:02:51.63 in modern medicine that's helped a lot. 00:02:51.67\00:02:53.44 Well one of the big ones is anesthesia. Right 00:02:54.20\00:02:56.91 You know, making chemicals that would put people to sleep. 00:02:56.94\00:02:59.57 Remember before we had anesthesia, 00:02:59.61\00:03:01.24 people would die of things like appendicitis, 00:03:01.28\00:03:04.08 gallbladder disease - they would die from these things. Right 00:03:04.11\00:03:07.18 People would die from broken bones even 00:03:07.22\00:03:09.88 because they couldn't be put to sleep to set the bones. 00:03:09.92\00:03:12.59 Bleeding problems were not able to be repaired by surgeons. 00:03:12.62\00:03:16.49 So anesthesia, which was modern medicine, 00:03:16.52\00:03:20.16 opened up the world for modern surgery. Right 00:03:20.20\00:03:22.90 And think about it, surgery usually takes care of 00:03:22.93\00:03:25.43 acute events - it doesn't prevent problems, 00:03:25.47\00:03:28.10 but it takes care of acute, so that was very useful. 00:03:28.14\00:03:31.17 Through the years, also, we've had many bacteria, 00:03:31.21\00:03:34.91 and one of the useful things in modern medicine is 00:03:34.94\00:03:38.01 antibiotics - there is a role for antibiotics. 00:03:38.05\00:03:40.92 Before we had antibiotics, people used to die of strep 00:03:40.95\00:03:43.92 and staph infections. 00:03:43.95\00:03:45.75 So antibiotics were a very good place for modern medicine 00:03:46.96\00:03:49.59 and still very useful today. 00:03:49.62\00:03:51.29 Certain vaccines are very helpful, you know, 00:03:51.33\00:03:54.66 we think about smallpox and polio - those used to be 00:03:54.70\00:03:58.00 terrible things, so that's another great use 00:03:58.03\00:04:00.24 for modern medicine. 00:04:00.27\00:04:02.17 We think more in the modern era - we think things like 00:04:02.20\00:04:04.94 pacemakers. 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.68 In fact, if you can hold that up for me, 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.41 this is a pacemaker and before people had pacemakers, 00:04:09.44\00:04:14.62 their hearts would gradually go slower, slower and slower, 00:04:14.65\00:04:18.09 and then stop! 00:04:18.12\00:04:19.45 So pacemakers have been a very useful advancement 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.49 that we have had to help people out, 00:04:22.52\00:04:24.36 and pacemakers now are very small. 00:04:24.39\00:04:26.59 They are put under the skin. 00:04:26.63\00:04:28.03 In fact, I had a pastor that came to me and his heart was 00:04:28.06\00:04:31.97 going 32 beats a minute, Nick, and it was just slow 00:04:32.00\00:04:36.67 because it got old quicker and if he would not have had 00:04:36.71\00:04:39.84 a pacemaker, he could not have continued on his ministry, 00:04:39.87\00:04:42.58 but now, he has a pacemaker, he does well... 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.91 So a pacemaker is sort of a really good place 00:04:44.95\00:04:48.02 for modern medicine. 00:04:48.05\00:04:50.22 We have another device here that I'm going to hold up... 00:04:50.25\00:04:52.65 This is a defibrillator and a defibrillator is for people 00:04:52.69\00:04:56.56 that have very, very weak hearts. 00:04:56.59\00:04:58.59 When they have a very weak heart, sometimes it goes 00:04:58.63\00:05:02.13 into funny heart rhythms. 00:05:02.16\00:05:03.57 The dangerous rhythm is called "ventricular tachycardia," 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.90 ventricular fibrillation. Right 00:05:06.94\00:05:09.17 If a heart goes into one of these rhythms, 00:05:09.20\00:05:11.27 this device will not only recognize it through a 00:05:11.31\00:05:13.94 computer chip, but it will see it, it will first 00:05:13.98\00:05:16.51 try to do a pacemaker to pace it out... 00:05:16.54\00:05:18.78 If that doesn't work, it will actually shock the heart. 00:05:18.81\00:05:21.95 Before that would happen, people used to die 00:05:21.98\00:05:24.49 from these dangerous rhythms. 00:05:24.52\00:05:25.85 This is like having an ambulance with you 24/7, Nick. 00:05:25.89\00:05:29.86 We used to not have that in the past, 00:05:29.89\00:05:31.49 and when we didn't have that, 00:05:31.53\00:05:32.86 people with weak hearts would die suddenly. 00:05:32.89\00:05:34.66 Well now, they don't do that if they have 00:05:34.70\00:05:36.53 one of these devices in them. 00:05:36.56\00:05:37.90 That's a very good place for modern technology. 00:05:37.93\00:05:41.17 Now, these are actually implanted 00:05:41.20\00:05:42.74 and where do they go in the body? 00:05:42.77\00:05:44.24 They usually go underneath the skin, usually above the clavicle 00:05:44.27\00:05:47.91 on the left side or the right side, 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.74 depending on whether you are left or right-handed, 00:05:49.78\00:05:51.58 and then we have leads that go into the heart that 00:05:51.61\00:05:54.22 not only monitor what's going on in the heart, 00:05:54.25\00:05:56.42 but is able to deliver treatment. 00:05:56.45\00:05:58.59 Now these don't prevent problems, 00:05:58.62\00:06:00.32 but if the problems occur, they are there to help you. 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.49 And they are instantly available to help. 00:06:02.52\00:06:04.43 So you're noticing a trend, modern medicine helps 00:06:04.46\00:06:07.10 acute events, but they don't necessarily help chronic events. 00:06:07.13\00:06:10.67 You want it when you have an emergency. 00:06:10.70\00:06:12.10 Right - modern medicine to get you over the hump, 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.27 and now do the things you have 00:06:14.30\00:06:15.67 so you don't need modern medicine. 00:06:15.70\00:06:17.54 Our goal is not to need modern medicine, 00:06:17.57\00:06:20.11 but we're glad it's there. Right 00:06:20.14\00:06:21.98 One of the ones that we do every day for 00:06:22.01\00:06:23.78 heart attacks is stents. 00:06:23.81\00:06:26.18 If a person is having a heart attack, Nick, that means 00:06:26.21\00:06:28.68 the artery is completely closed, the heart is getting no blood. 00:06:28.72\00:06:32.42 The heart is getting no blood, it can go into a dangerous 00:06:32.92\00:06:35.19 rhythm - a person could die very quickly. 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.83 So a stent, if it's placed within a short period of time, 00:06:36.86\00:06:41.13 opens up that artery so the heart gets enough blood, 00:06:41.16\00:06:43.83 so the heart doesn't die; it doesn't predispose it 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.13 to these abnormal rhythms. 00:06:46.17\00:06:48.07 So modern medicine - there is a place for modern technology, 00:06:48.10\00:06:51.94 but I have some people that come to me; 00:06:51.97\00:06:53.68 they don't want to do anything that's not "natural." Okay 00:06:53.71\00:06:57.21 Well natural things are fine and dandy, 00:06:57.65\00:07:00.22 but natural things are mainly used for chronic conditions 00:07:00.25\00:07:04.95 to prevent needing modern medicine. 00:07:04.99\00:07:07.16 But when you have a crisis, you need modern medicine, 00:07:07.19\00:07:11.13 it helps get you, sort of, over the hump. Right 00:07:11.16\00:07:13.63 So there is a place for modern medicine. 00:07:13.66\00:07:16.03 Hopefully, we will never have to use it, 00:07:16.06\00:07:18.03 but these are just some examples through the years, 00:07:18.07\00:07:20.04 just a few examples, of where technology 00:07:20.07\00:07:22.40 has helped us tremendously. 00:07:22.44\00:07:24.04 And we have some questions today that sort of deal with 00:07:24.07\00:07:27.11 when to use modern medicine, 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.78 when is other things more useful. 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.95 But one of the things that is also helpful 00:07:30.98\00:07:32.78 in modern medicine is all these things that we have 00:07:32.81\00:07:35.05 for first aid. That's right! 00:07:35.08\00:07:36.92 And we've been putting together a first aid kit and you've been 00:07:36.95\00:07:38.95 highlighting some of the important items that we 00:07:38.99\00:07:41.12 should all include in our first aid kit, 00:07:41.16\00:07:42.72 so what are we going to talk about today here? 00:07:42.76\00:07:44.26 This one is a very good one, and a lot of people don't 00:07:44.29\00:07:46.70 realize about it, but part of first aid is when things 00:07:46.73\00:07:49.03 bite us. 00:07:49.06\00:07:50.63 And this first aid kit helps us and this is a very 00:07:50.67\00:07:54.37 advanced one and you would get this in the store. 00:07:54.40\00:07:56.60 And I'm just going to hold this up here. 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.47 This is a first aid kit that helps with bites, 00:07:59.51\00:08:02.24 and there are many different ones available. 00:08:02.28\00:08:04.18 This one does mosquitoes, snakes, wasps, bees 00:08:04.21\00:08:07.45 and has a lot of things and it would take us too long 00:08:07.48\00:08:09.88 to go into it in great detail, but inside this kit 00:08:09.92\00:08:13.52 they have some special devices that can help extract venom. 00:08:13.56\00:08:17.96 Oh, okay, what? You know, when something 00:08:17.99\00:08:19.69 bites you - what damages you, not always the bite. 00:08:19.73\00:08:22.80 You know, the bite damages the tissue, 00:08:22.83\00:08:24.27 but it's usually what the insect puts in you. 00:08:24.30\00:08:28.30 And this has some devices that it can actually help extract 00:08:28.34\00:08:31.34 some of the venom in it. 00:08:31.37\00:08:32.71 You know, it's not very fancy, it's very easy to use, 00:08:32.74\00:08:35.31 but this is a device that a lot of people get 00:08:35.34\00:08:37.81 that are out in the woods, that go hiking and camping, 00:08:37.85\00:08:40.78 they get bit - this is a very useful kit to help maybe 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.99 minimize some of the trauma from a bite 00:08:44.02\00:08:46.76 or sting, or something like that. 00:08:46.79\00:08:48.12 So this is something I think is worthwhile for 00:08:48.16\00:08:50.03 people to add to this. 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.86 In this kit, not only do they have that, 00:08:51.89\00:08:53.46 but it also has some band aids and some other things 00:08:53.50\00:08:56.40 to help the pain go away. 00:08:56.43\00:08:58.50 But this is another useful place for modern medicine. 00:08:58.53\00:09:02.10 You know, when you get bit by a snake, 00:09:02.14\00:09:04.54 you're going to want some antivenom, 00:09:04.57\00:09:06.57 you're going want something right away. 00:09:06.61\00:09:07.94 You're not going to want some natural remedy. Right 00:09:07.98\00:09:10.81 That's an emergency situation. 00:09:10.85\00:09:12.18 Right, when you're having a heart attack, 00:09:12.21\00:09:13.55 you don't want a natural remedy! 00:09:13.58\00:09:15.45 You know, when you have a gallbladder that ruptures, 00:09:15.48\00:09:17.52 you don't want... 00:09:17.55\00:09:19.79 It's time for an intervention, right? 00:09:19.82\00:09:21.16 So I want everyone to understand that there's a very 00:09:21.19\00:09:23.46 important place for modern technology, 00:09:23.49\00:09:25.73 but it has to be used in the right setting, 00:09:25.76\00:09:28.46 and it's mainly acute emergencies, 00:09:28.50\00:09:30.87 but it's not something that we should have to do 00:09:30.90\00:09:33.17 year-in and year-out, get us over the hump 00:09:33.20\00:09:35.47 then we learn the things, get back to what 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.57 you said earlier - about how we can get back 00:09:37.61\00:09:39.57 to God's original plan that keeps us from needing 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.21 the place for modern medicine. That's right. 00:09:42.24\00:09:44.48 And we have received a number of questions from our website, 00:09:44.51\00:09:47.12 and if you have a question, you can go there right now at: 00:09:47.15\00:09:49.35 heartwiseministries.org 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.42 and you can ask the doctor your question. 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.49 We'll be right back as Dr. Marcum answers 00:09:53.52\00:09:55.59 some of the common questions 00:09:55.62\00:09:56.96 we receive on modern medicine - stay with us... 00:09:56.99\00:09:58.86
