We all experience symptoms, but understanding 00:00:16.54\00:00:19.41 why those symptoms are happening is so important. 00:00:19.45\00:00:22.78 Stay with us as Dr. Marcum helps explain it. 00:00:22.82\00:00:26.02 I'm Dr. James Marcum, are you interested in 00:00:26.05\00:00:29.22 discovering the reason why? 00:00:29.26\00:00:31.26 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problem? 00:00:31.29\00:00:34.23 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:34.26\00:00:36.93 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:36.97\00:00:41.40 A lot of questions about symptoms, 00:00:42.50\00:00:44.61 but treating a symptom is not always the best idea. 00:00:44.64\00:00:47.81 Dr. Marcum, tell us why this might be the case. 00:00:47.84\00:00:50.01 Well I will Nick, and this is going to be a 00:00:50.21\00:00:52.61 great discussion because we're going to talk today, 00:00:52.65\00:00:55.12 on our program, about the difference between a 00:00:55.15\00:00:58.02 symptom, what's causing the symptom, a diagnosis, 00:00:58.05\00:01:02.02 all these interesting things, and think about it this way... 00:01:02.06\00:01:05.09 If I were banging my head into the wall over 00:01:05.13\00:01:08.26 and over and over again, and my head started hurting, 00:01:08.30\00:01:11.70 the symptom of hurting would be 00:01:11.73\00:01:14.44 the hurting is coming from my head... 00:01:14.47\00:01:16.64 Well if you were treating the symptom, 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.24 you might give me a pain medication. 00:01:18.27\00:01:20.31 I'd give you a pill. Sure! 00:01:20.34\00:01:21.68 And the pain might go away temporarily, 00:01:21.71\00:01:24.11 but it doesn't get at the cause. Right 00:01:24.15\00:01:26.65 That's just one analogy of treating a symptom 00:01:26.92\00:01:30.82 and not understanding the cause. 00:01:30.85\00:01:32.89 But let's think about it this way... 00:01:32.92\00:01:34.96 Let's talk about what a symptom is first of all. 00:01:34.99\00:01:38.36 Anything that we feel that's not normal 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.90 could be considered a symptom. Okay 00:01:42.93\00:01:45.57 Now there are physical symptoms that our body undergoes, 00:01:45.60\00:01:50.84 but there are also mental symptoms 00:01:50.87\00:01:53.54 that we don't feel that we think. Okay 00:01:53.58\00:01:55.88 So your brain can have symptoms 00:01:55.91\00:01:57.35 just as well as our body can have symptoms. 00:01:57.38\00:01:59.85 Let's talk about the eyes... 00:01:59.88\00:02:02.02 What would be a symptom that the eyes are malfunctioning, 00:02:02.05\00:02:04.55 something that the eyes would not be normal. 00:02:04.59\00:02:06.25 If they are itchy and red... 00:02:06.29\00:02:07.62 Itchy, red, pain in the eye, blurry vision... 00:02:07.66\00:02:11.66 those are all symptoms from the eyes. 00:02:11.69\00:02:14.26 We can think of that with almost any body part. 00:02:14.30\00:02:16.97 What about the head? Pain, headaches, 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.14 ears - ringing into the ears, dizziness. 00:02:20.17\00:02:23.37 Of course, the organ I work with is the chest. 00:02:23.41\00:02:25.81 The symptoms that might be from the chest would be: 00:02:25.84\00:02:27.91 Chest pain, but chest pain can be from the heart, 00:02:27.94\00:02:30.15 there are many other things. 00:02:30.18\00:02:31.71 Can't breathe - that might be a symptom. 00:02:31.75\00:02:34.52 A rash might be a symptom; itching might be a symptom; 00:02:34.55\00:02:39.49 diarrhea might be a symptom, and then the opposite 00:02:39.52\00:02:42.89 of diarrhea - constipation - those might be symptoms 00:02:42.92\00:02:45.83 from the GI tract. 00:02:45.86\00:02:47.30 Well what a healer does first of all - is he collects 00:02:47.33\00:02:51.17 the symptoms and sees if there is some pattern 00:02:51.20\00:02:53.80 recognition. 00:02:53.84\00:02:55.17 He sees if these abnormal feelings that a person 00:02:55.20\00:02:57.87 is experiencing might be leading to the cause. 00:02:57.91\00:03:01.24 So that's what a good diagnostician would do. 00:03:01.28\00:03:04.08 Now sometimes, there is disease going on in the body 00:03:04.11\00:03:07.45 that's longstanding that we don't even know we have 00:03:07.48\00:03:10.49 until we have a symptom. Right 00:03:10.52\00:03:12.29 Usually, when a symptom comes to surface, 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.72 the problem is pretty developed, and that's usually 00:03:15.76\00:03:18.89 when we need modern medicine is when the 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.23 symptom develops to help get us over the hump. 00:03:21.26\00:03:24.17 Are you following me? Yeah 00:03:24.20\00:03:25.53 Okay, like a heart attack might have been going on, 00:03:25.57\00:03:28.47 the cause, for 40 or 50 years. 00:03:28.50\00:03:31.11 Really? But it doesn't happen until 00:03:31.14\00:03:32.97 it accumulates and we have a heart attack. Right 00:03:33.01\00:03:35.14 Then we have to deal with the symptom, 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.45 but the disease has been going on for years and years. 00:03:37.48\00:03:40.62 You follow me? Yep 00:03:40.65\00:03:41.98 High blood pressure... high blood pressure can cause 00:03:42.02\00:03:43.69 aneurysms or weak spots in arteries. 00:03:43.72\00:03:46.42 That blood pressure might have been high for 30 years, 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.92 we might not have even know it. 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.39 The cause of that blood pressure might have been in our diet, 00:03:50.43\00:03:52.69 but we don't find out about it 00:03:52.73\00:03:54.20 until our body develops a symptom. Okay 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.83 So in our bodies, in caring for health, Nick, 00:03:56.87\00:04:00.04 we don't want to wait until a symptom occurs. 00:04:00.07\00:04:02.90 Did you ever watch - what's that show that 00:04:04.34\00:04:06.94 Barney Fife was on that show... 00:04:06.98\00:04:08.38 Umm... I'll think of it in a minute, 00:04:08.41\00:04:10.18 but anyway, I used to watch that show - it was very good, 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.61 it was funny and he used to say, "Nip it in the bud." Sure 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.92 So we want to find out a problem before it's a problem. 00:04:16.25\00:04:19.12 So that's one of the reasons, about going to 00:04:19.15\00:04:21.29 really good doctor - he will help you identify 00:04:21.32\00:04:24.26 disease before it even manifests itself as a symptom. 00:04:24.29\00:04:29.10 So, if you're feeling something that's not right, 00:04:29.13\00:04:32.40 especially if you don't have an explanation for it, 00:04:32.43\00:04:36.27 you need to seek help. 00:04:36.30\00:04:38.67 Your chest hurts when you're walking up a hill... 00:04:38.71\00:04:40.68 That's a classic symptom, but it could be a symptom 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.75 of what we call "angina," where the heart 00:04:43.78\00:04:46.45 isn't getting enough blood. 00:04:46.48\00:04:47.82 But if you think about it, lots of our body parts 00:04:47.85\00:04:50.69 have symptoms and if we identify the symptoms, 00:04:50.72\00:04:53.32 and we can articulate it well, that's going to help 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.99 the doctor quite a bit. 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.39 I have some people that come in and the men are the 00:04:57.43\00:05:00.73 worst about this... they come in, 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.40 I say, "Well why are you here?" 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.27 And they say, "Well my wife brought me." 00:05:05.70\00:05:08.74 You know that's the #1... No, I said, "No, you can do 00:05:08.77\00:05:10.91 better than that." Right "Why are you here?" 00:05:10.94\00:05:13.27 "I don't feel good." 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.04 Well, you know, that's not really helping me a whole lot, 00:05:15.08\00:05:17.98 but that is a symptom. 00:05:18.01\00:05:19.35 You need more of a description, what hurts? 00:05:19.38\00:05:20.95 But the symptom of, "My wife brought me," 00:05:20.98\00:05:23.25 doesn't help me very much. Right 00:05:23.28\00:05:24.79 The symptom of, "I feel bad all over," doesn't help me much, 00:05:24.82\00:05:28.09 but sometimes I can get them to lower it down a little bit. 00:05:28.12\00:05:31.83 They might say, "I'm having a fever," and that's a 00:05:31.86\00:05:34.46 symptom that might go with an infection; 00:05:34.50\00:05:36.53 it might go with a certain type of cancer. 00:05:36.56\00:05:39.13 They might say, "I've been losing weight," 00:05:39.17\00:05:43.20 and that would go with maybe a bowel problem; 00:05:43.24\00:05:45.44 a malnourishment problem; 00:05:45.47\00:05:46.98 it could go with a cancer problem, 00:05:47.01\00:05:49.01 and even at that point, the symptoms would eventually 00:05:49.04\00:05:51.58 lead me to the underlying cause of the symptoms 00:05:51.61\00:05:54.18 which could lead me to the disease or the disease state, 00:05:54.22\00:05:57.35 and help me figure out what I need to do. 00:05:57.39\00:06:00.09 So it's always better off treating a cause 00:06:00.12\00:06:03.66 rather than treating a symptom. 00:06:03.69\00:06:05.53 Not that the symptoms don't need attention, 00:06:05.56\00:06:07.53 but long-term, like we said, banging the head, 00:06:07.56\00:06:09.96 if I quit banging my head, I might not need the narcotic 00:06:10.00\00:06:13.70 to take the pain away. 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.70 And that happens so many times in people... 00:06:15.74\00:06:18.07 They do things over and over, especially back pain, Nick. 00:06:18.11\00:06:21.34 I have people that have back pain and they come in, 00:06:21.38\00:06:24.61 and they say, "Oh, my back hurts." 00:06:24.65\00:06:26.31 Well, the best thing for them is to rest it. 00:06:26.35\00:06:29.28 If they wouldn't go to work for a week or two and let 00:06:29.32\00:06:31.32 it rest, it would heal, everything would be fine... 00:06:31.35\00:06:33.49 But no, they have to go to work, they don't let it heal, 00:06:33.52\00:06:36.79 "Give me some medicine so I can work." 00:06:36.83\00:06:39.66 So they're functioning, they keep tearing the muscles 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.63 and the nerves and the back never gets better, 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.73 and they make the problem worse. Right 00:06:43.77\00:06:45.97 So sometimes in treating symptoms, 00:06:46.00\00:06:48.10 we can make problems worse. 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.14 I have people that come to me after they've had the bypass 00:06:50.17\00:06:52.94 surgery and that's where they cut the sternum and all the 00:06:52.97\00:06:55.98 nerves in two... I say, "Well, if you let this heal well, 00:06:56.01\00:06:59.31 it takes about six months," and they go, 00:06:59.35\00:07:01.05 "Well can I have a pain medicine?" 00:07:01.08\00:07:02.42 And I go, "No, I want you to have the pain 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.75 because that tells you to stop doing what you're doing." 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.26 So sometimes pain is a good signal for us not to be 00:07:07.29\00:07:11.53 stupid and do things we shouldn't be doing to our body. 00:07:11.56\00:07:15.03 So I think in understanding in answering 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.63 these questions today, it's going to be very 00:07:17.67\00:07:19.67 important that we step back a little bit and let's try 00:07:19.70\00:07:22.64 to find the cause of the problem 00:07:22.67\00:07:24.47 rather than just treating a symptom. 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.31 Now if we look at modern medicine, 00:07:26.34\00:07:28.31 we have lots of pills, lots of over-the-counters... 00:07:28.34\00:07:31.91 most of them just treat symptoms, 00:07:31.95\00:07:35.18 they don't treat the cause. 00:07:35.22\00:07:36.65 Does a blood pressure medicine treat a cause? No 00:07:36.69\00:07:40.66 Does a diabetic medicine treat a cause? 00:07:40.69\00:07:43.32 No, it just lowers your blood sugar. 00:07:43.36\00:07:45.26 Does a headache pill treat the cause? 00:07:45.29\00:07:47.06 No, it just treats the pain. 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.66 So a lot of these things treat symptoms, 00:07:48.70\00:07:51.10 and that's okay for the moment, 00:07:51.13\00:07:52.47 but it doesn't get at the problem, 00:07:52.50\00:07:54.07 so the problem continues to recur over and over. 00:07:54.10\00:07:57.47 It's a great business model, but it's not the best 00:07:57.51\00:08:01.24 way to take care of one of your most valuable, 00:08:01.28\00:08:03.51 if not the most valuable, investment that you have... 00:08:03.55\00:08:06.28 And I find it very strange that most people will spend 00:08:06.31\00:08:09.38 more time learning about their cars and other hobbies, 00:08:09.42\00:08:13.56 than they will spending learning about their body, 00:08:13.59\00:08:15.69 how to take care of it and how to optimize the function 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.73 of this very valuable gift. 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.40 That's right, it's really important... 00:08:20.43\00:08:21.76 don't just let your doctor get away with treating 00:08:21.80\00:08:24.07 just the symptom, we want to know 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.90 what the underlying cause is. 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.27 Now, we've been doing first aid... 00:08:27.30\00:08:28.77 That's right, we've got some items here that we 00:08:28.80\00:08:31.34 pulled out of the first aid kit, and, Dr. Marcum, 00:08:31.37\00:08:32.71 why don't you tell us what you've got here 00:08:32.74\00:08:34.21 and why they need to be in our kit. 00:08:34.24\00:08:35.58 Well, we have been working on getting everyone some 00:08:35.61\00:08:37.71 practical things that they can do on a first aid kit. 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.85 First aid is just that... First aid - first treatment. 00:08:40.88\00:08:44.15 That doesn't necessarily find the cause, 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.15 but it enables the person to feel well enough 00:08:46.19\00:08:50.06 so they can get to a person that can find the cause 00:08:50.09\00:08:52.29 unless they know what it is. Right 00:08:52.33\00:08:54.06 And almost every first aid kit needs to have all sorts of 00:08:54.10\00:08:57.17 ointments okay... ointments for them, 00:08:57.20\00:08:59.80 and this is one called, "Betadine ointment." 00:08:59.83\00:09:02.30 And this is very good if someone gets an infection, 00:09:02.34\00:09:05.64 a nail, you know - a cut, they need to put this on it. 00:09:05.67\00:09:09.64 It helps kill bacteria because if bacteria from the skin 00:09:09.68\00:09:13.31 and from a contaminant gains access to the bloodstream, 00:09:13.35\00:09:16.69 that could be very bad, not a good thing. 00:09:16.72\00:09:18.72 So this helps lower the risk of infection. 00:09:18.75\00:09:21.02 This is sort of very easy to put on. 00:09:21.06\00:09:23.36 This is what we call a "Triple Antibiotic Ointment," 00:09:23.39\00:09:26.70 and this is just a different antibiotic ointment 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.13 to do the same - to kill the different bacteria 00:09:29.16\00:09:31.40 that might be on the skin that might gain access to the blood. 00:09:31.43\00:09:35.50 Everyone has heard of "Neosporin." 00:09:35.54\00:09:37.91 We put a lot of these on wounds 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.74 that help with the infection with that. 00:09:40.78\00:09:43.51 But anyway, your first aid kit should have lots of 00:09:43.55\00:09:46.11 different creams that have antibiotics; 00:09:46.15\00:09:47.95 different creams to help with itches. 00:09:47.98\00:09:50.49 This is a burn cream and this is sort of not only an 00:09:50.52\00:09:54.36 anesthetic, but antiseptic. 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.59 And you don't have to necessarily know 00:09:56.62\00:09:58.53 all the active ingredients in it, 00:09:58.56\00:10:00.20 but you should have lots of these to handle 00:10:00.23\00:10:01.86 different situations that come involved with your skin. 00:10:01.90\00:10:05.20 Itching is another thing that will do it. 00:10:05.23\00:10:07.17 Some people have some things for really dry skin. 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.77 They have a moisturizer that will help. 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.14 Now you showed me, recently, something that was very 00:10:12.17\00:10:15.54 valuable that I want to add to my kit that I didn't have, 00:10:15.58\00:10:18.38 and that was a lighter. 00:10:18.41\00:10:20.72 That's right, I keep a lighter in my because I go camping 00:10:20.75\00:10:23.22 a lot and that type of thing, but, you know, 00:10:23.25\00:10:24.59 maybe in cold situations, building a fire 00:10:24.62\00:10:27.16 and having a little bit of heat would be very convenient. 00:10:27.19\00:10:29.16 Yeah, well I thought that was very useful because you 00:10:29.19\00:10:30.89 never know when you might need some fire for something, 00:10:30.93\00:10:33.29 and that's more of a survival tool... 00:10:33.33\00:10:35.60 But I think a good first aid kit is valuable not only 00:10:35.63\00:10:39.30 if you're going into a function or an event, 00:10:39.33\00:10:42.07 have a good first aid kit to help until ambulances 00:10:42.10\00:10:45.07 might get there and not everyone has access to ambulances 00:10:45.11\00:10:48.34 and urgent care centers... Sometimes that can take a while. 00:10:48.38\00:10:51.58 Sometimes that can take a while and we don't want that. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.55 So we're going to talk about answering these questions... 00:10:53.58\00:10:56.92 We're going to try to always, when these questions come in, 00:10:56.95\00:10:59.32 for the people that ask these questions, 00:10:59.35\00:11:02.36 we going to focus on the cause, but usually it starts 00:11:02.39\00:11:04.93 out as a symptom and we're going to try to 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.20 let people understand that when you don't feel right, 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.76 that's a symptom and you want to understand the cause 00:11:09.80\00:11:12.77 because if you understand the cause, 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.60 you're more likely to get a long-lasting solution. 00:11:14.64\00:11:18.07 That's right! We're going to be 00:11:18.11\00:11:19.57 back in just a moment, please stay with us 00:11:19.61\00:11:21.48 as Dr. Marcum helps explain causes and symptoms. 00:11:21.51\00:11:24.95
