Okay 00:01:34.49\00:01:37.23 Just like the respiratory system gives oxygen to every cell, 00:01:37.26\00:01:41.50 the GI system helps us give energy to every cell. 00:01:41.53\00:01:44.93 And we take really 3 nutrients in that we really need... 00:01:44.97\00:01:49.40 We take our carbohydrates, that should be our primary 00:01:49.44\00:01:52.37 source of nutrients that is extracted from our GI system. 00:01:52.41\00:01:56.18 That means it pulls it out. 00:01:56.21\00:01:57.75 We have proteins - those are our building blocks, 00:01:57.78\00:02:01.08 those are enzymes - that is needed, 00:02:01.12\00:02:02.88 but not very much of our total calories is needed in proteins, 00:02:02.92\00:02:05.89 and a very small amount is needed in fat. 00:02:05.92\00:02:09.39 And if we upset that balance by what we put in, 00:02:09.42\00:02:13.36 things get altered - stress is put on the system. 00:02:13.40\00:02:17.03 So just what we put in our GI system 00:02:17.07\00:02:19.03 is very important as far as balance. 00:02:19.07\00:02:21.24 So when we put it in, digestion and breaking this 00:02:21.27\00:02:24.71 starts with our teeth, Nick, we start chewing it; 00:02:24.74\00:02:27.61 we start having enzymes in our mouth that actually 00:02:27.64\00:02:30.25 starts digestion in the mouth. 00:02:30.28\00:02:31.91 There is amylase that starts in the mouth. 00:02:31.95\00:02:33.88 I like to eat greens! 00:02:33.92\00:02:35.38 Greens - actually the digestion of greens starts in the mouth. 00:02:35.42\00:02:38.35 And I can absorb nitrites in my bloodstream, 00:02:38.39\00:02:41.29 even from my mouth. Right 00:02:41.32\00:02:42.92 So it starts in the mouth and you want to chew well. 00:02:42.96\00:02:45.66 If you don't chew up your food well - if you just gulp it down, 00:02:45.69\00:02:48.83 the rest of the body parts don't like that. 00:02:48.86\00:02:51.63 It's sort of like if you work in a television studio... 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.00 You know, someone doesn't do their job and then other people 00:02:54.04\00:02:56.64 downstream have to work harder. 00:02:56.67\00:02:58.17 Makes it harder for everybody. It makes it harder. 00:02:58.21\00:02:59.67 So when Mr. Teeth and Mr. Mouth aren't doing 00:02:59.71\00:03:02.28 their job, Mr. Stomach is going to go, "Hey, these guys 00:03:02.31\00:03:04.98 are lazy, I have to work harder." 00:03:05.01\00:03:06.55 Well luckily, we're not in a television studio like that. 00:03:06.58\00:03:08.82 Right, we're not in a TV studio... 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.19 So anyway, people have to work harder downstream... 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.05 and lots of things can happen 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.62 inside this part... you know, your teeth can 00:03:14.66\00:03:16.86 fall out, you can get infections in the mouth, 00:03:16.89\00:03:19.66 you can get cancers in the mouth, 00:03:19.69\00:03:21.43 lots of things can hurt that process. 00:03:21.46\00:03:23.47 So then - I call it the big tube because it's like a big tube 00:03:23.50\00:03:26.50 that runs through us that takes the food out. 00:03:26.53\00:03:28.70 Then it goes down, you swallow it, 00:03:28.74\00:03:30.67 there's a little tube that separates the lungs from 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.48 the stomach called the "epiglottis," 00:03:33.51\00:03:35.11 keeps it going the right way. Okay 00:03:35.14\00:03:37.31 So you want the epiglottis to be happy too. 00:03:37.35\00:03:39.88 So it goes down - the next thing is the esophagus. 00:03:39.91\00:03:42.35 The esophagus is pretty much just a transport area. 00:03:42.38\00:03:45.75 It helps it get to point A from the mouth 00:03:45.79\00:03:48.02 to B where digestion really starts ramping up 00:03:48.06\00:03:50.86 in the stomach. Right 00:03:50.89\00:03:52.23 So in the stomach, you know the esophagus is this 00:03:52.63\00:03:55.16 tube that goes down... in the stomach that's where 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.03 there are lots of acids and that's where the food 00:03:57.07\00:03:58.77 starts to be broken down. 00:03:58.80\00:04:00.40 You make things like "hydrochloric acid" in the 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.80 stomach that breaks down proteins. 00:04:02.84\00:04:04.41 Proteins are really hard to break down. 00:04:04.44\00:04:06.54 It starts breaking down the proteins and then it goes 00:04:06.57\00:04:09.04 into the small intestine where we start extracting 00:04:09.08\00:04:12.41 water from the system and then more nutrients are extracted. 00:04:12.45\00:04:16.08 Eventually it gets to the large intestines 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.95 where more water is dealt with and the wastes 00:04:17.99\00:04:20.32 are sort of dealt with, and then as it moves through 00:04:20.36\00:04:22.82 this gigantic tube, eventually it comes out the 00:04:22.86\00:04:25.09 other end as waste. Okay 00:04:25.13\00:04:27.43 So that's what the tube does, it's mainly there to extract 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.30 nutrients that we need. Pull out the good stuff. Right 00:04:30.33\00:04:33.67 But unfortunately, if we put bad stuff into this tube, 00:04:33.70\00:04:37.01 bad things happen. Pulls up the bad stuff. Yes 00:04:37.04\00:04:39.77 And things in the mouth that can be bad 00:04:39.81\00:04:41.38 or things like tobacco. 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.61 Tobacco can be that in not taking good care of your teeth, 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.21 that could hurt that. Sure 00:04:46.25\00:04:47.58 Not having enough water in you 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.22 could cause fissures in the mouth and things of that nature. 00:04:49.25\00:04:52.95 Infections can happen in the mouth. 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.62 That affects the way you absorb the food. 00:04:54.66\00:04:57.03 Lots of things can happen to the esophagus... 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.23 And of course, a lot of us take 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.40 in food that's not good for our system. 00:05:01.43\00:05:04.30 And when the stomach and some of the 00:05:04.33\00:05:06.40 parts see things that they don't want to handle, 00:05:06.43\00:05:09.37 they go, "Oh my, what is Nick doing to me today, 00:05:09.40\00:05:12.44 he is giving me this stuff and I don't know what 00:05:12.47\00:05:14.54 to do with it, I know I don't want to 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.44 break it down, but I gotta do something with it." 00:05:16.48\00:05:19.01 And actually, it takes some of the bad toxins into the body. 00:05:19.05\00:05:23.59 A lot of people don't realize, but one of our questions 00:05:23.62\00:05:25.85 today talks about "probiotics," but there is a trillion 00:05:25.89\00:05:28.82 bacteria in the system that also aid in this process, 00:05:28.86\00:05:33.43 so it's not only some of the chemicals like amylase 00:05:33.46\00:05:36.33 and lipase and digested enzymes, 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.33 it's a host of a trillion bacteria... 00:05:38.37\00:05:40.74 And those bacteria all have to be in the correct balance. 00:05:40.77\00:05:44.11 So this tube is very complicated, 00:05:44.14\00:05:46.54 a lot of stuff is going on in it. 00:05:46.57\00:05:49.11 It's there to help us feel good and a lot of people 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.15 don't realize that the bacteria in the stomach, 00:05:51.18\00:05:54.28 how the bowel works affects numerous parts of the body. 00:05:54.32\00:05:58.05 Because those trillion bacteria they make different 00:05:58.09\00:06:01.22 mutations happen - they make certain chemicals 00:06:01.26\00:06:03.79 that can affect the heart. 00:06:03.83\00:06:05.16 Them make chemicals that can give us hormones 00:06:05.19\00:06:08.50 that affect our brain like serotonin. 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.63 A lot of people don't realize the gut makes 80% 00:06:10.67\00:06:13.34 of our chemical called serotonin which helps us sleep. 00:06:13.37\00:06:16.57 A lot of different things that can happen just by keeping 00:06:16.60\00:06:19.31 good care of our gut - our big tube as I say. Right 00:06:19.34\00:06:24.25 So it's very important to take care of that big tube, 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.95 and we're going to answer some 00:06:26.98\00:06:28.42 great questions about that subject. 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.09 I've got to interrupt and ask... 00:06:30.12\00:06:31.52 This is a bright tie and I think it's related to 00:06:31.55\00:06:34.06 the topic today, what's on your tie here? 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.52 Well, this is a great tie that someone gave to me, Nick, 00:06:35.56\00:06:38.83 and I'm glad you pointed it out because not many people 00:06:38.86\00:06:41.56 can see all these fancy things, but on this tie 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.73 there's an artery, there's an EKG, 00:06:44.77\00:06:47.70 there's a spine, there's a prescription pad, 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.54 lots of neat things are on this tie... 00:06:50.57\00:06:53.24 And I like to wear this tie, probably only once or twice... 00:06:53.27\00:06:56.48 Here's a bug that's not on that tie, 00:06:56.51\00:06:58.95 but I'm glad you noticed that tie, Nick, because whoever 00:06:58.98\00:07:01.35 gave it to me - I can't remember who gave it to me, 00:07:01.38\00:07:03.42 was very proud to find this tie. 00:07:03.45\00:07:05.75 And I'm still trying to look, there's a heart there, 00:07:06.42\00:07:08.76 and a stethoscope, but I don't see the big tube there. 00:07:08.79\00:07:11.06 So no big tube today, but I'm glad you noticed that. 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.90 Well let's talk about it, we've been building a 00:07:16.00\00:07:18.20 first aid kit and what are some 00:07:18.23\00:07:20.34 more items that need to be in our first aid kit? 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.77 Well, I want to over that because that's one way that 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.44 everyone can be involved, not only do we learn things, 00:07:25.47\00:07:27.74 but there are some things that you can pass on to your 00:07:27.78\00:07:29.68 friends and neighbors and you can carry with you 00:07:29.71\00:07:32.08 in your first aid kit that you're creating at home. 00:07:32.11\00:07:34.65 Well this, Nick, here is a splint, okay, 00:07:34.68\00:07:38.05 and these are splints that you can buy that are very 00:07:38.09\00:07:41.22 small and these are great stocking stuffers 00:07:41.26\00:07:44.76 that are great for your own first aid kit. 00:07:44.79\00:07:46.93 And the key that happens when you break a bone or hurt 00:07:46.96\00:07:50.13 something is you want to immobilize it. Right 00:07:50.17\00:07:52.90 You want to keep it from moving. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.87 So what's the idea behind immobilization? 00:07:54.90\00:07:57.51 We want to basically keep the joint from moving because 00:07:57.54\00:08:02.54 the more a joint moves, the more it can cause damage. 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.01 Does that help it grow back correctly if it doesn't? 00:08:05.05\00:08:07.02 Well if it hold it in place, and when it's in place 00:08:07.05\00:08:09.62 it does grow back better, the tissue holds still 00:08:09.65\00:08:12.29 so you don't keep causing more inflammation. 00:08:12.35\00:08:14.92 Bones love to stay together, and they make chemicals 00:08:14.96\00:08:18.79 that helps it heal faster if you keep moving it. 00:08:18.83\00:08:21.56 That's why if you break your arm, they put it in a cast. 00:08:21.60\00:08:24.23 It takes about 6 weeks for the bones to heal up. 00:08:24.27\00:08:27.14 That's the way, if you hurt your ankle, you know, 00:08:27.17\00:08:29.20 you want to put it in some type of immobilization device. 00:08:29.24\00:08:32.31 Well this happens to be a small 00:08:32.34\00:08:33.88 one that will go on your fingers. 00:08:33.91\00:08:36.95 If you hurt your fingers, it will mobile that 00:08:36.98\00:08:39.18 until you can get an x-ray to see if it needs 00:08:39.21\00:08:41.38 to be immobilized any further with a cast. 00:08:41.42\00:08:43.72 So this is something that's very useful for your fingers. 00:08:43.75\00:08:46.92 Feet - do you mobilize toes very much? 00:08:46.96\00:08:50.43 No, you usually wrap the toes, you know, you mobilize 00:08:50.46\00:08:54.10 toes by wrapping them. 00:08:54.13\00:08:55.70 Ankles - you immobilize ankles sometimes by using these 00:08:55.73\00:08:58.87 Ace wraps okay - and these Ace wraps are also beneficial 00:08:58.90\00:09:03.24 if, let's say, you might hurt your arm and you think 00:09:03.27\00:09:05.67 it's broken... 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.18 Well, you know, if you can immobilize the bone, 00:09:07.21\00:09:10.45 keep something straight, this is very useful 00:09:10.48\00:09:13.28 if you have something to keep it straight, a board or 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.79 something with you or something solid, you can use the Ace wrap 00:09:16.82\00:09:20.12 to wrap it around that board to sort of immobilize an arm. 00:09:20.16\00:09:23.63 Legs are a little bit harder, but an arm you can mobilize 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.63 with this fairly easily. 00:09:26.66\00:09:28.00 And that probably helps to reduce the pain 00:09:28.03\00:09:29.36 because if it was not moving as much, 00:09:29.40\00:09:30.73 it won't hurt as bad while you are on your way to the hospital. 00:09:30.77\00:09:33.00 And that makes sense, the more moving, guess what? 00:09:33.03\00:09:35.27 The more the nerves are turned on... 00:09:35.30\00:09:37.47 the more pain you have...
