Are you tired of prescription medications? 00:00:16.68\00:00:19.21 On today's program, we're going to talk about 00:00:19.25\00:00:21.08 an approach that just might help you 00:00:21.12\00:00:22.85 get rid of those medications. 00:00:22.88\00:00:24.39 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:24.62\00:00:26.29 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:26.32\00:00:29.79 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problem? 00:00:29.82\00:00:32.59 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:32.63\00:00:35.60 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:35.63\00:00:39.57 Hi, I'm Nick Evenson... 00:00:41.17\00:00:42.50 Thank you for joining us for today's program. 00:00:42.54\00:00:44.24 Why are we do dependent on medications? 00:00:44.31\00:00:46.91 And, is it possible to get off of them? 00:00:46.94\00:00:49.61 Dr. Marcum, thank you for joining us. 00:00:49.64\00:00:51.61 What do you think about this? 00:00:51.65\00:00:52.98 Well, you know Nick, I've thought a lot about this. 00:00:53.01\00:00:57.05 In fact, a couple of years ago, I wrote a book, 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.72 "Medicines That Kill" 00:00:59.75\00:01:01.39 Because in my research, I realized that medications 00:01:01.42\00:01:04.39 were the leading cause of death in America. Really? 00:01:04.43\00:01:07.46 And if you think about the problem, 00:01:07.50\00:01:09.63 if you look at the evidence... 00:01:09.66\00:01:11.07 You know, every year more heart attacks, more cancer, 00:01:11.10\00:01:15.00 more stroke, more diabetes, more sleeping problems, 00:01:15.04\00:01:18.84 more chronic pain. Right 00:01:18.87\00:01:21.38 Where does it end? Yeah 00:01:21.41\00:01:23.08 And if you look at 4 billion prescription medications, 00:01:23.11\00:01:26.92 you can say, "Wow, are we really fixing the problem?" 00:01:26.95\00:01:30.52 And a lot of people would like to come off their 00:01:30.55\00:01:33.82 medications if we gave them some other alternatives. Right 00:01:33.86\00:01:38.19 But as a medical profession, we treat symptoms 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.93 and not causes - and this is just not sustainable. Right 00:01:41.96\00:01:46.27 So we have to find out the cause of the problem, 00:01:46.30\00:01:50.31 and treat the causes and try to use as many natural remedies 00:01:50.34\00:01:54.01 or getting back to God's way to treat these things, 00:01:54.04\00:01:57.68 so we don't have to use medications 00:01:57.71\00:01:59.55 that sometimes cause more problems. 00:01:59.58\00:02:02.28 If you think about, Nick, if you have a problem, 00:02:02.32\00:02:04.59 and you can change the entire chemistry of the body, 00:02:04.62\00:02:08.22 that makes a lot more sense to me to change one 00:02:08.26\00:02:10.73 chemical pathway that can mess up 00:02:10.76\00:02:12.96 a lot of other chemical pathways. Sure 00:02:12.99\00:02:14.93 The body is just very, very complicated, 00:02:14.96\00:02:17.67 and with medications, there's not a medication 00:02:17.70\00:02:20.47 that exists that doesn't have risk. Right 00:02:20.50\00:02:23.51 Now I'm a cardiologist and I do use medications, 00:02:23.54\00:02:27.21 but I always talk to my patients... 00:02:27.24\00:02:28.68 "Here is the risk, here are the benefits," 00:02:28.71\00:02:31.48 and we monitor very closely for side effects. 00:02:31.51\00:02:34.55 And even if you're perfect with your medications, 00:02:34.58\00:02:37.09 there are certain medications that can cause 00:02:37.12\00:02:39.15 anaphylactic reactions - we see that a lot with antibiotics. 00:02:39.19\00:02:42.99 Certain medicines interact with other medications. 00:02:43.02\00:02:47.16 We know about pain medications, how they become very addictive. 00:02:47.20\00:02:51.63 Blood pressure medicines can make your blood pressure 00:02:51.67\00:02:53.70 go too low. Right 00:02:53.74\00:02:55.07 Diabetic medicines can make your blood sugar go too low. 00:02:55.10\00:02:58.71 All of those can have bad combinations. 00:02:58.74\00:03:01.14 If you take too much of anxiety medicines, 00:03:01.18\00:03:02.98 that can cause bad things to happen. Yeah 00:03:03.01\00:03:04.81 So medications are not without risk. 00:03:04.85\00:03:07.98 So I think it's very worthwhile that we talk about this, 00:03:08.02\00:03:11.52 and answer questions about specific instances where people 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.99 might be able to help themselves. 00:03:15.02\00:03:16.73 Now the doctors aren't really trained to do this, Nick. 00:03:16.76\00:03:19.73 You know, we went into medical school. Right 00:03:19.76\00:03:23.26 What do they teach us about? 00:03:23.30\00:03:24.63 Medications! 00:03:24.67\00:03:26.00 They don't necessarily teach us in how to treat in other ways. 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.00 And doctors are very good at treating symptoms; 00:03:29.04\00:03:32.07 they're very good at getting people over the humps. 00:03:32.11\00:03:34.68 But I think we have more work to do in understanding 00:03:34.71\00:03:37.75 what causes disease, talking and convincing people 00:03:37.78\00:03:40.72 that there are other alternatives... 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.32 You know, loving people, not judging them, 00:03:42.35\00:03:45.15 and moving them one step at a time towards health. 00:03:45.19\00:03:48.29 We clearly need to move in some other directions 00:03:48.32\00:03:50.29 because what we're doing, like you said, 00:03:50.33\00:03:51.66 it's just not working. 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.03 No, in the United States right now, 00:03:53.06\00:03:54.93 17% of the gross national product now 00:03:54.96\00:03:58.47 is spent on healthcare. Right 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.30 You know, wouldn't it be better to spend it on something else? 00:04:00.34\00:04:03.34 You know, anything else... And, I think that this is 00:04:03.37\00:04:06.14 the discussion, but it's not going to come from the system. 00:04:06.17\00:04:09.64 It's going to come from one person at a time, 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.95 making changes - learning to get back to the way 00:04:11.98\00:04:14.98 they were designed, learning to stay away 00:04:15.02\00:04:17.35 from these chronic stressors which turns on our diseases, 00:04:17.39\00:04:21.09 which causes to need these chronic medications... 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.96 And I think this is something that we need to talk about, 00:04:23.99\00:04:27.33 and I want to give people today a little bit of a strategy, 00:04:27.36\00:04:30.60 at least a way to approach the doctor, a way to think about it, 00:04:30.63\00:04:34.00 if there is a medication that you can possibly be off of. 00:04:34.04\00:04:37.31 Now I'm not saying you can, but I have lots of patients 00:04:37.34\00:04:40.31 that - for instance, they start exercising and eating right, 00:04:40.34\00:04:43.58 then they don't need their medicine 00:04:43.61\00:04:44.95 for high blood pressure. Sure 00:04:44.98\00:04:46.31 You know, they lose a lot of weight, get rid of 00:04:46.35\00:04:48.25 refined sugars, eat healthy... 00:04:48.28\00:04:50.09 They don't need their diabetic medicines. 00:04:50.12\00:04:52.19 Get rid of the stimulants, turn the TV off at night, 00:04:52.22\00:04:55.79 they start sleeping better, they don't need 00:04:55.82\00:04:57.26 their sleeping pill. Right 00:04:57.29\00:04:58.76 Maybe not have so much caffeine and protein, 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.50 and eating big at night - they don't need their antacid pills. 00:05:02.53\00:05:05.73 Maybe do some exercising, eat some greens, 00:05:05.77\00:05:09.24 maybe they don't need their calcium pills. Right 00:05:09.27\00:05:12.01 But there's no real incentive to do that 00:05:13.44\00:05:15.34 because if we did that, the pharmaceutical industry 00:05:15.38\00:05:18.11 would take a hit. Yeah, right 00:05:18.15\00:05:19.68 So a lot of what we do in the 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.98 medicine society is financial and politics-driven, Nick, 00:05:22.02\00:05:25.92 and I just don't like that, but someone has got to 00:05:25.95\00:05:29.19 step out and at Heartwise, we try to get people to 00:05:29.22\00:05:33.13 think about a balanced approach, 00:05:33.16\00:05:35.16 you know - the place for modern medicine, 00:05:35.20\00:05:37.27 and there is a place - the place for lifestyle changes. 00:05:37.30\00:05:40.20 But what we do different than other ministries, I think, is 00:05:40.24\00:05:43.17 from a medical standpoint is... we try to first focus on that 00:05:43.20\00:05:47.28 relationship with the Heavenly Father. Right 00:05:47.31\00:05:50.21 Because that takes us to the place we need to go, 00:05:50.25\00:05:52.88 and even if we're on the line of health and we just go to 00:05:52.91\00:05:55.42 A to B, to B to C, C to D and we go real slow, 00:05:55.45\00:05:58.92 we know that our Heavenly Father is going to make up for 00:05:58.95\00:06:01.52 us and heal in His time. Yeah 00:06:01.56\00:06:03.56 Now we're hoping He will heal right away. 00:06:03.59\00:06:06.09 You know these simple lifestyle changes are often overlooked 00:06:06.13\00:06:09.46 because people just want to write a prescription 00:06:09.50\00:06:11.13 and take a pill, but they are really powerful 00:06:11.17\00:06:13.60 when implemented and we don't always have 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.40 the willpower to do it on our own. 00:06:15.44\00:06:17.77 Right, we don't and that's why we need 00:06:17.81\00:06:19.17 help from others, encouraging, and I found out that if 00:06:19.21\00:06:21.74 people will just take one-step-at-a-time, 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.51 and then they say, "Yeah, I do feel better." 00:06:24.55\00:06:26.55 "You know, I'm drinking my water, I'm getting my rest, 00:06:26.58\00:06:29.15 I'm eating my greens, 00:06:29.18\00:06:30.85 I'm not eating as much fatty foods, 00:06:30.89\00:06:32.52 I do feel better, yes it can be done. 00:06:32.55\00:06:34.59 God is working in my life." That's right 00:06:34.62\00:06:37.19 And that's what I like about, getting at the cause 00:06:37.23\00:06:39.93 of problems - we can affect a whole generation of people. 00:06:39.96\00:06:43.10 And when people start doing this, they actually feel 00:06:43.13\00:06:46.10 the power of God transforming them. 00:06:46.13\00:06:48.70 And, it's so easy to get sort of sucked into the 00:06:48.74\00:06:52.54 modern world that we live in, 00:06:52.57\00:06:53.98 the technology and what everyone says... 00:06:54.01\00:06:56.04 You know, I have patients that come to me... "Well I read this 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.71 this on the internet, it must be true; 00:06:58.75\00:07:00.48 I saw this on the TV, so give me this medicine." 00:07:00.52\00:07:03.59 Well, have you ever looked at the TV ads, Nick? Yeah, sure 00:07:03.62\00:07:07.29 Well, we can have this and this and this, 00:07:07.32\00:07:08.66 but it can do this, this, this, this, this, and this... 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.83 all of them are bad. Yeah 00:07:10.86\00:07:12.26 One benefit - at a lot of risks! 00:07:12.29\00:07:15.03 Let me tell a story real quick before I know we're going to 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.53 talk about our first aid kit in a minute, 00:07:17.57\00:07:19.63 but I had a patient not too long ago 00:07:19.67\00:07:22.77 that came and he was impotent. 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.31 He was 35 years old - impotent, and he says, 00:07:25.34\00:07:29.08 "Can I have this medication for impotence?" 00:07:29.11\00:07:31.35 I go - "Do we really want to have that?" 00:07:31.38\00:07:34.15 "And I know I could give you that medicine, 00:07:34.18\00:07:36.62 and I could write a prescription 00:07:36.65\00:07:37.99 for you for the rest of your life or we could try 00:07:38.02\00:07:40.76 to get at the cause." 00:07:40.79\00:07:42.39 So I said, "Well some of the causes 00:07:42.42\00:07:43.76 of this impotence is maybe the food." 00:07:43.79\00:07:46.39 We know that fat paralyzes 00:07:46.43\00:07:47.76 arteries so they can't get bigger. Right 00:07:47.80\00:07:49.73 We know that stress increases the chance of becoming impotent. 00:07:49.76\00:07:52.60 I said, "For 10 days, 10 days, I want you to pray 00:07:52.63\00:07:55.90 that God will help you to eat a perfect diet," 00:07:55.94\00:07:59.07 so we talked about a perfect diet. 00:07:59.11\00:08:00.88 Get rid of all the fatty, all the fast foods. 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.01 He did that for 10 days and he came back in 10 days 00:08:03.04\00:08:06.61 and he could raise a flagpole. He was a happy camper. Sure. 00:08:06.65\00:08:09.58 No, but it just proves we can do anything from 10 days 00:08:09.62\00:08:12.32 when we let the Lord work with us on these things, 00:08:12.35\00:08:14.82 we can see all sorts great things happen. 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.13 That's why I think health starts in that relationship 00:08:17.16\00:08:20.50 that we have with our Creator. 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.23 Because when we're doing things because God is working with us, 00:08:22.26\00:08:24.63 and we love Him, we do it for the right reasons. 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.67 We don't do it for selfish reasons. Yeah 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.70 And, we let Him move us one-step-at-a-time 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.07 and that's when we see the power 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.07 that God has in healing in our lives. 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.98 Doctors treat symptoms. God heals! 00:08:35.01\00:08:37.85 And that's so neat, Nick, and I like to talk about it. 00:08:37.88\00:08:41.35 Now our first aid kit. 00:08:41.38\00:08:42.72 That's right - we definitely know that there is a place 00:08:42.75\00:08:44.69 for medications and one of the places is when we have 00:08:44.72\00:08:47.79 emergencies - so we carry some 00:08:47.82\00:08:49.42 medications in our first aid kit. 00:08:49.46\00:08:50.99 What are we going to talk about today? 00:08:51.03\00:08:52.59 Well we've been working on our first aid kit in this series 00:08:52.63\00:08:55.43 of programs because we want everyone to have a 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.17 first aid kit that's well-stocked. Right 00:08:57.20\00:08:59.33 If they have an emergency, let's get them over the hump. 00:08:59.37\00:09:02.04 Well one of the things I think is very useful 00:09:02.07\00:09:04.71 for a first aid kit is medications to stop diarrhea. 00:09:04.74\00:09:09.81 Let's say you're somewhere and get some bad water. 00:09:09.84\00:09:13.05 Let's say you're on a mission trip in Africa, 00:09:13.08\00:09:15.02 and got some bad water. Yeah 00:09:15.05\00:09:16.38 Let's say you go to a restaurant, 00:09:16.42\00:09:18.29 and get some bad things that cause diarrhea. 00:09:18.32\00:09:20.62 When you have diarrhea, you can lose your electrolytes 00:09:20.66\00:09:23.59 and fluid very quickly. That's right 00:09:23.63\00:09:25.26 You lose your fluid, you could lose your blood pressure, 00:09:25.29\00:09:28.40 you'll lose your potassium and magnesium, 00:09:28.43\00:09:29.86 your heart could do funny rhythms, 00:09:29.90\00:09:31.33 sometimes dangerous rhythms. 00:09:31.37\00:09:33.07 That's not a good thing to lose a lot of your volume. 00:09:33.10\00:09:36.10 And if you think, "Well what do we need for good health?" 00:09:36.14\00:09:38.67 Well, we need fluids, we need to breathe, 00:09:38.71\00:09:42.14 we need to rest... those are the basics. 00:09:42.18\00:09:44.48 And I found out in health, we don't do the basics well. 00:09:44.51\00:09:47.88 So in first aid, if you're losing a lot of fluid 00:09:47.92\00:09:51.09 from these and you need to slow it down for a while, 00:09:51.12\00:09:53.49 this is a medicine called, "Imodium" that helps. 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.39 This is over-the-counter and it helps slow down the bowels 00:09:56.42\00:09:59.66 so you don't move as much of your volume. 00:09:59.69\00:10:05.50 You know, don't lose as many electrolytes... 00:10:05.53\00:10:07.17 this is very helpful. 00:10:07.20\00:10:08.54 Another thing that's very helpful for a first aid kit 00:10:08.57\00:10:11.51 that you might want to is this device here... 00:10:11.54\00:10:15.04 This is basically a pill that sterilizers bad water.
