So many in the world today are experiencing pain, 00:00:16.38\00:00:18.81 both physical and mental. 00:00:18.85\00:00:20.92 We're going to talk about pain and give suggestions 00:00:20.95\00:00:23.28 to help those experiencing it. Stay with us... 00:00:23.32\00:00:25.89 I'm Dr. James Marcum... 00:00:26.09\00:00:27.96 Are you interested in discovering the reason why? 00:00:27.99\00:00:31.19 Do you want solutions to your healthcare problem? 00:00:31.23\00:00:34.20 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:34.23\00:00:36.70 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:36.73\00:00:41.57 I'm Nick Evenson, thank you for joining us today. 00:00:43.24\00:00:45.54 You know, so many people are experiencing chronic pain. 00:00:45.57\00:00:48.78 Dr. Marcum, what do our viewers need to know about pain? 00:00:48.81\00:00:51.75 Yeah Nick, and the whole world is full of pain now and it just 00:00:51.78\00:00:56.15 breaks my heart when I see so many people in pain. 00:00:56.18\00:00:58.92 Just, you know, to think of all different types of pain. 00:00:58.95\00:01:02.36 Back pain - that's a big deal! 00:01:02.39\00:01:04.26 And right now, in the United States, 1 in 5 people 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.56 have back pain - about 20% have back pain. 00:01:08.60\00:01:12.07 And of those who have back pain, 00:01:12.10\00:01:13.77 1 in 10 become disabled. 00:01:13.80\00:01:17.01 And some for people that have back pain... 00:01:17.04\00:01:19.67 it becomes a lifetime problem. 00:01:19.71\00:01:22.48 But not only back pain, there are pains 00:01:22.51\00:01:24.58 from all different other parts of the body. 00:01:24.61\00:01:26.65 There's mental pain that happens. Sure 00:01:26.68\00:01:29.65 There are pains in our legs, in different parts of our body. 00:01:29.68\00:01:33.49 There's arthritis-type pain. 00:01:33.52\00:01:36.02 Pain is a major issue in our society and when I think about 00:01:36.06\00:01:41.33 pain in an approach to pain, the first thing we want 00:01:41.36\00:01:43.67 to think about is - well what causes the pain? 00:01:43.70\00:01:47.94 If we can understand what causes the pain, 00:01:47.97\00:01:50.41 maybe we have a chance to heal the pain. 00:01:50.44\00:01:53.01 And there are some things that we can do naturally 00:01:53.04\00:01:55.94 to help with pain. 00:01:55.98\00:01:57.31 There are some things we can do mentally to help with pain. 00:01:57.35\00:02:00.82 And what I try to do first in an approach to a person with 00:02:00.85\00:02:04.15 chronic pain is we try to let them know... 00:02:04.19\00:02:07.39 there's help available and let's try to limit 00:02:07.42\00:02:11.06 the exposure to pain pills, if we can. Sure 00:02:11.09\00:02:15.76 Unfortunately, chronic narcotics are a big problem, 00:02:15.80\00:02:19.37 and some people get on these medications and they never 00:02:19.40\00:02:22.44 get off these medications, and they're addictive, 00:02:22.47\00:02:25.67 and they take more and more of them, 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.11 and before they know it, guess what? 00:02:27.14\00:02:28.94 They're more addicted to the pain pills, 00:02:28.98\00:02:31.48 and the pain really isn't an issue, 00:02:31.51\00:02:32.85 the pain pills are the issue. Right 00:02:32.88\00:02:34.45 So that's a big issue that we see and a lot of people's 00:02:34.48\00:02:37.72 pain would heal, especially back pain, Nick, 00:02:37.75\00:02:41.49 if they would quit using their back. 00:02:41.52\00:02:43.12 But what's happened, especially in men, they might hurt 00:02:43.16\00:02:46.29 their back from lifting too much or pulling too much. 00:02:46.33\00:02:49.53 And then rather than letting the problem heal, 00:02:49.56\00:02:52.23 quit lifting, let it heal, maybe do some physical therapy... 00:02:52.27\00:02:55.27 they have to get back to work. 00:02:55.30\00:02:56.91 They have to keep doing what they're doing. Yeah 00:02:56.94\00:02:59.14 So they might take some medications 00:02:59.17\00:03:01.18 or something temporarily to get them over the hump, 00:03:01.21\00:03:03.45 but the problem never goes away. 00:03:03.48\00:03:06.08 So they never treat the cause of the pain. 00:03:06.11\00:03:08.42 Now if you were a baseball player and you were throwing 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.29 fastballs and broke your arm, you would put your arm 00:03:11.32\00:03:14.69 in a cast and let it rest and heal. That's right 00:03:14.72\00:03:17.56 One of the best treatments for pain is to just 00:03:17.59\00:03:20.26 rest the part of the body that's having the pain. 00:03:20.30\00:03:23.93 If it's your arm, rest your arm. 00:03:23.97\00:03:26.37 If it's your brain, rest your brain. 00:03:26.40\00:03:28.74 If it's your toe, rest your toe. 00:03:28.77\00:03:30.64 So rest is one thing that we have gotten away from 00:03:30.67\00:03:33.68 because we live in this fast paced world that we 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.84 never think we have to rest. Right 00:03:35.88\00:03:37.78 We're just going 24/7, we never need to rest. 00:03:37.81\00:03:40.95 And lots of people have headaches... 00:03:40.98\00:03:44.39 One of the causes of headaches is too much stress! Yeah! 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.12 You know, stress headaches is very common. 00:03:47.16\00:03:48.96 A lot of people have muscle pains. 00:03:48.99\00:03:50.86 A lot of the reasons we have muscle pains is because of 00:03:50.89\00:03:52.66 stress and the muscles get tight, 00:03:52.69\00:03:54.30 we're not taking good things in. 00:03:54.33\00:03:55.86 So pain is all around us and one of the things that 00:03:55.90\00:03:59.50 in Heartwise, in a week, with lots of people that 00:03:59.53\00:04:02.30 come with pain and I found that a lot of people... 00:04:02.34\00:04:05.97 we can't ever find out the cause of their pain 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.11 mentally and emotionally, but prayer is so valuable. 00:04:08.14\00:04:12.25 And we have a prayer site, don't we? 00:04:12.28\00:04:13.88 That's right - on our website heartwiseministries.org 00:04:13.92\00:04:16.85 We have a prayer form there and we encourage you to visit. 00:04:16.89\00:04:19.69 And you can list your prayer request and lift you up 00:04:19.72\00:04:21.92 in prayer and you can also pray for other people 00:04:21.96\00:04:23.86 who have listed their request there as well. 00:04:23.89\00:04:25.96 So we enjoy and like to pray for people 00:04:25.99\00:04:29.53 because God can heal in ways we can't and God helps 00:04:29.56\00:04:32.07 take away pain. 00:04:32.10\00:04:33.44 But today, we're going to talk a little bit about pain 00:04:33.47\00:04:36.04 and answer some questions about pain, 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.74 but the real take-home message is today for everyone 00:04:37.77\00:04:40.84 in this is if you're in pain, find out the cause for the pain. 00:04:40.88\00:04:44.95 Is there something that could be reversed. 00:04:44.98\00:04:46.78 Pain is usually caused by a nerve. 00:04:46.82\00:04:49.65 Find out why that nerve is unhappy and what can be done 00:04:49.68\00:04:53.66 to help the nerve heal because if a nerve can heal, 00:04:53.69\00:04:56.79 the pain can get better. 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.23 For instance, chiropractors... chiropractors work 00:04:58.26\00:05:02.86 and what they do is the muscles and nerves are involved 00:05:02.90\00:05:07.74 with each other and muscles put pressure on the nerves, 00:05:07.77\00:05:11.64 so they help relieve muscle pressure on the nerve. 00:05:11.67\00:05:15.24 So if a muscle gets tight and puts pressure on a nerve, 00:05:15.28\00:05:17.48 they help relieve that. 00:05:17.51\00:05:19.61 Of course, there are certain medications that help by 00:05:19.65\00:05:22.85 helping with inflammation so the body can heal itself. 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.86 So I think that the goal for people to understand is 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.59 in pain management is to find out what's causing the pain, 00:05:29.62\00:05:32.53 see if the body can heal itself. 00:05:32.56\00:05:34.96 And if we can't heal itself, really work on helping the brain 00:05:35.00\00:05:40.04 do better with the pain; 00:05:40.07\00:05:41.90 helping the body do better with pain because there are 00:05:41.94\00:05:44.01 things that we can do, Nick, that can help pain. 00:05:44.04\00:05:46.51 For instance, in a person that's under stress, 00:05:46.54\00:05:48.51 their pain is going to get worse. 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.21 A person doesn't sleep well, 00:05:50.25\00:05:51.78 their pain is going to get worse. 00:05:51.81\00:05:53.55 A person that doesn't drink enough water, 00:05:53.58\00:05:55.45 their pain will be worse. 00:05:55.48\00:05:57.45 A person that doesn't eat well... 00:05:57.49\00:05:59.29 We know that people that eat things like lots of animal, 00:05:59.32\00:06:02.52 lots of fried products - they have lots more inflammation, 00:06:02.56\00:06:05.49 their pain will get worse. 00:06:05.53\00:06:07.20 Also, their blood vessels aren't as good as others 00:06:07.23\00:06:10.13 so we can't bring the nutrients we need in to help the body 00:06:10.17\00:06:12.93 heal itself. 00:06:12.97\00:06:14.30 A lot of chronic back pain occurs because we don't have 00:06:14.34\00:06:18.14 a good blood supply to the disks. Okay 00:06:18.17\00:06:20.68 If we don't get a good blood supply to the disk, 00:06:20.71\00:06:23.21 we can't help the disk heal and do the things 00:06:23.24\00:06:25.28 it needs to stay healthy; therefore, the disk 00:06:25.31\00:06:27.38 comes to have inflammation. Right 00:06:27.42\00:06:29.62 And the inflammation, long-term, pushes on the nerve, 00:06:29.65\00:06:33.69 causes that to hurt. 00:06:33.72\00:06:35.06 Something as simple as posture... 00:06:35.09\00:06:37.69 I think you told me to sit up straight, 00:06:37.73\00:06:40.33 but didn't you hurt yourself the other day... 00:06:40.36\00:06:43.67 Yeah, I was exercising and I took a fall, 00:06:43.70\00:06:46.57 and it's happened one time before; 00:06:46.60\00:06:48.20 3 or 4 days later, I thought my back should have felt better, 00:06:48.24\00:06:51.04 but it was still sore. 00:06:51.07\00:06:52.41 So I went to a friend who is a physical therapist, 00:06:52.44\00:06:54.78 and he said, "Yeah, your hips, one of them is rotated, 00:06:54.84\00:06:57.35 and it's not lined up properly." 00:06:57.38\00:06:58.88 And so he did a manipulation 00:06:58.91\00:07:00.55 and we got it back in line, and everything was better. 00:07:00.58\00:07:03.18 But I guess it was causing some of the muscles... 00:07:03.22\00:07:04.82 Yes, to stretch, push on the nerves and it was hurting you. 00:07:04.85\00:07:09.76 Yeah, yeah... But once that got 00:07:09.79\00:07:12.16 straightened out, you were fine, right? 00:07:12.19\00:07:13.56 Yeah, there was a little soreness for a couple of days, 00:07:13.60\00:07:15.83 but then it goes away and it's all better. 00:07:15.86\00:07:18.07 Yeah, but a lot of the back pain that we have in this 00:07:18.10\00:07:20.57 world today - which we read the statistics, 00:07:20.60\00:07:22.84 a lot of that could be improved just by good posture. Right 00:07:22.87\00:07:26.47 Another thing that we've talked about before is... 00:07:26.51\00:07:28.81 We weren't designed to sit all day, 00:07:28.84\00:07:30.75 and how many of us sit all day or drive a truck all day, 00:07:30.78\00:07:34.32 or do anything in the same position, 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.22 and we don't have good posture? 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.09 When we don't have good posture, the skeleton and the muscles 00:07:38.12\00:07:40.92 put pressure on the nerves and guess what? 00:07:40.96\00:07:43.56 Lots of pain. Lot of pain! Yeah 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.36 Pain is not good and it gets your attention. 00:07:46.39\00:07:49.80 Pain is a sign that something is wrong in the body. 00:07:49.83\00:07:53.47 It's stress - chronic pain makes chemicals go up in the body 00:07:53.50\00:07:57.41 like adrenalin, cortisol, inflammatory markers 00:07:57.44\00:08:01.84 which damage the body over long-term. 00:08:01.88\00:08:04.05 Pain makes the blood pressure go up. Yeah 00:08:04.08\00:08:06.68 Pain makes the heart rate go up. 00:08:06.72\00:08:09.02 So pain makes digestion change. 00:08:09.05\00:08:11.62 Chronic pain affects the way you think. 00:08:11.65\00:08:14.52 So chronic pain affects the entire body, 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.33 so that's why it's so important, but you saw the statistics 00:08:17.36\00:08:20.56 for back pain - we have a major problem here. That's right 00:08:20.60\00:08:24.40 And one of the things we have to be careful is, again, 00:08:24.43\00:08:26.97 we've talked about this over and over... 00:08:27.00\00:08:28.70 Modern medicine best serves itself by getting 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.21 a person over a hump until they can heal on its own. 00:08:31.24\00:08:34.68 We were never really made to be on pain medicines 00:08:34.71\00:08:37.85 the rest of our lives. That's right! 00:08:37.88\00:08:39.81 Even though some people are, some people have to have that, 00:08:39.85\00:08:43.02 but we weren't really designed to have that. 00:08:43.05\00:08:45.42 So we were really designed to find the cause of the pain, 00:08:45.45\00:08:48.26 and there are lots of other ways we can treat pain 00:08:48.29\00:08:50.63 like posture, chiropractics, massage, heat... 00:08:50.66\00:08:55.26 There are certain types of anti-inflammatories 00:08:55.30\00:08:57.53 to give the body the best chance to heal itself. 00:08:57.57\00:09:00.60 That's what people should focus on when they have pain. 00:09:00.64\00:09:02.77 Now, there are specialists that deal with this. 00:09:02.80\00:09:04.54 They are called "pain specialists, 00:09:04.57\00:09:06.54 and there are some good ones and there are some bad ones. 00:09:06.57\00:09:10.18 If you go to one and the first thing he wants to do is 00:09:10.21\00:09:12.48 put you on a pain medicine and not talk to you about it, 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.55 that's a bad one. 00:09:14.58\00:09:16.25 We really want to make sure they understand the problem 00:09:16.28\00:09:18.79 in its entirety before giving a treatment. 00:09:18.82\00:09:21.72 And we want to have them try to get at the cause if they can. 00:09:21.76\00:09:25.53 Also, you want a pain doctor that's going to use 00:09:25.56\00:09:28.06 things that are a minimum risk to you. 00:09:28.10\00:09:31.53 Maybe they can have neural stimulators. 00:09:31.57\00:09:34.00 Maybe they can use posture. 00:09:34.04\00:09:35.37 Maybe they can use massage. 00:09:35.40\00:09:36.94 A lot of people - maybe they can use diet. 00:09:36.97\00:09:39.07 I've gotten a lot of people's chronic back pain better 00:09:39.11\00:09:42.21 by just going to a whole food, plant-based diet 00:09:42.24\00:09:45.98 because that helps inflammation which is chronically 00:09:46.01\00:09:48.95 hurting the nerves because the bones in the back don't 00:09:48.98\00:09:53.49 let the nerves out as well. Right 00:09:53.52\00:09:55.06 The little things like that and posture and exercise 00:09:55.09\00:09:57.79 and movement - those are all part of a comprehensive 00:09:57.83\00:10:00.46 pain plan. Okay 00:10:00.50\00:10:02.70 Now, we've been talking about a first aid kit, right? 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.37 That's right - I was going to just ask you... 00:10:05.40\00:10:07.20 What is this bottle here and why 00:10:07.24\00:10:08.80 should it be in a first aid Kit? 00:10:08.84\00:10:10.77 Well we've been trying to give everyone some examples of 00:10:10.81\00:10:13.98 things that they can have in the first aid kit to help out. 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.44 Remember, just to get people over the hump 00:10:16.48\00:10:18.25 until they can get at the cause. That's right 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.98 One of the things that I think a first aid kit is 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.75 some different types of very safe pain medications. 00:10:22.78\00:10:27.22 Just to sort of get you over the hump so you can function 00:10:27.26\00:10:30.36 you know, get things moving on. 00:10:30.39\00:10:32.13 There are many different ones out there. 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.96 This happens to be Tylenol. 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.10 Now, all medicines have side effects, 00:10:36.13\00:10:38.57 but Tylenol, if not taking too many, seems to be 00:10:38.60\00:10:41.57 fairly safe unless you have liver problems. 00:10:41.60\00:10:44.51 It doesn't cause a lot of side effects. 00:10:44.54\00:10:46.57 Another one that tends to work well is Motrin or Advil, 00:10:46.61\00:10:50.38 those things like that. 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.95 They are more of an anti-inflammatory, 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.78 and you can actually use things like Motrin and Advil 00:10:54.82\00:10:57.55 in conjunction with Tylenol to work on 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.45 two different pain pathways. Okay 00:10:59.49\00:11:01.62 Those tend to work very well for short periods of time, 00:11:01.66\00:11:05.23 and I think you need some pain medicine in your first aid kit 00:11:05.26\00:11:09.16 to help people get over the hump because chronic pain 00:11:09.20\00:11:13.34 is not good either. Right 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.87 But, at the same time, I've seen a lot of people 00:11:15.90\00:11:18.17 that are in pain that don't rest the body that's hurting, 00:11:18.21\00:11:21.74 and they end up making it worse. Yeah 00:11:21.78\00:11:23.58 They don't rest it, it gets more inflamed, 00:11:23.61\00:11:25.98 more swollen, the nerves get more damaged, 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.12 and you have more and more process going on. Right - right 00:11:28.15\00:11:31.39 Now, before we stop here, I know we have some questions, 00:11:31.42\00:11:34.32 but another thing that's very important for pain is the brain. 00:11:34.36\00:11:37.46 How's that? The perception of pain. 00:11:37.49\00:11:39.93 Oh right - yeah! 00:11:39.96\00:11:41.66 You know, pain can be learned, 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.83 and pain can be turned on and off and how the brain 00:11:43.87\00:11:46.97 handles it is very important. 00:11:47.00\00:11:48.40 You make endorphins which are natural pain killers 00:11:48.44\00:11:51.04 when you're happy and laugh and distracted. 00:11:51.07\00:11:53.64 I had pain for years in my arm. 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.64 I hurt my arm and I damaged nerves in my arm, 00:11:55.68\00:11:58.21 and for like 6 years, it felt like my funny bone 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.35 was activated and I had chronic pain in my arm. 00:12:01.38\00:12:04.49 And then just one day, the brain turned the pain off, 00:12:04.52\00:12:08.29 and I've never had it ever since! Wow 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.39 So the brain is very powerful dealing with pain, 00:12:10.43\00:12:13.60 and in our perception of pain. Right 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.40 Some people can have a low pain tolerance, 00:12:15.43\00:12:17.90 some have a high pain tolerance, 00:12:17.93\00:12:19.73 and there are things that we can do to relax our bodies 00:12:19.77\00:12:22.37 whether it be deep-breathing that helps with pain, 00:12:22.40\00:12:26.44 anything that cuts down stress is going to help the pain. Sure 00:12:26.47\00:12:30.61 So that's why I think that worship is also a very 00:12:30.65\00:12:33.18 good treatment for pain because as we come to worship 00:12:33.21\00:12:36.32 we lower the stress, stress is going to lower 00:12:36.35\00:12:39.15 and help us have less pain, and, of course, 00:12:39.19\00:12:41.09 God can heal right away. 00:12:41.12\00:12:42.59 So those are just some interesting things that we 00:12:42.62\00:12:45.36 have talked about pain and I know we've had 00:12:45.39\00:12:47.26 some questions come in. That's right 00:12:47.30\00:12:49.16 After the break, we're going to get back to some questions, 00:12:49.20\00:12:51.63 If you have questions about your health, 00:12:51.67\00:12:53.30 visit our website at: heartwiseministries.org 00:12:53.34\00:12:56.57 where you can ask the doctor your questions, 00:12:56.60\00:12:58.47 and we also have a prayer form there where you can 00:12:58.51\00:13:00.71 list your prayer request and pray for others. 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.31 We'll be back just after the break, so stay with us. 00:13:03.35\00:13:05.71
