Welcome back! Today, we are talking about 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 the skin - one of our most important organs, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.40 and, Dr. Marcum, we're about to answer some questions on skin. 00:00:04.43\00:00:07.57 And our first question is: "What does the skin actually do, 00:00:07.60\00:00:10.64 and what type of doctor treats the skin?" 00:00:10.67\00:00:12.54 Yeah, well we touched on that a little bit about 00:00:12.57\00:00:14.81 what the skin does and one thing is that it's a barrier 00:00:14.84\00:00:18.61 and it sort of protects us from our environment. Okay 00:00:18.65\00:00:22.15 You've probably heard the term, "Do you have thick skin?" 00:00:22.18\00:00:25.55 Well thick skin helps protect from the environment 00:00:25.59\00:00:28.92 and a lot of people also realize that, you know, 00:00:28.96\00:00:31.73 hair growing out of skin, that still counts as skin too... 00:00:31.76\00:00:34.23 So that hair growing out of skin counts, the nails, 00:00:34.26\00:00:36.67 that sort of all counts as skin too. 00:00:36.70\00:00:38.73 But one of the most important functions of the skin 00:00:38.77\00:00:41.50 is to protect us from the environment. 00:00:41.54\00:00:43.74 It can protect us from infections. 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.91 And a lot of times infections are spread 00:00:46.94\00:00:49.74 from person-to-person and we want to keep the skin healthy 00:00:49.78\00:00:53.75 and intact. 00:00:53.78\00:00:55.12 We know that when skin is cut or the barriers in skin 00:00:55.15\00:00:58.35 are broken, then all of a sudden we have access 00:00:58.39\00:01:01.49 to the bloodstream. 00:01:01.52\00:01:02.86 So you can get an infection in the bloodstream, 00:01:02.89\00:01:04.89 and it can spread very quickly. 00:01:04.93\00:01:07.00 So first and foremost, the skin is a barrier 00:01:07.03\00:01:09.63 to help our protection. 00:01:09.66\00:01:11.30 The skin also helps in heat regulation. 00:01:11.33\00:01:14.67 You know, keeps us warm, keeps us cold. 00:01:14.70\00:01:16.67 Everyone knows when you get out in the cold, 00:01:16.71\00:01:18.97 what does the skin do? 00:01:19.01\00:01:20.64 You shiver - you shiver! That's right 00:01:20.68\00:01:22.04 Because you want to keep the temperature in. Right 00:01:22.08\00:01:24.58 If you don't keep the temperature in, 00:01:24.61\00:01:26.55 bad things happen. 00:01:26.58\00:01:28.18 When you stop shivering, there's a problem. Right! 00:01:28.22\00:01:30.19 You don't want to get too cold. Right 00:01:30.22\00:01:32.15 Too cold is not good for the body. 00:01:32.19\00:01:34.26 I personally do not like cold weather. 00:01:34.29\00:01:36.22 I will do anything to keep warm. Sure 00:01:36.26\00:01:38.49 I put coats, sweaters, anything, 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.10 I'm just not a cold-weather person, Nick. 00:01:40.13\00:01:42.13 Another thing that the skin does is... 00:01:42.16\00:01:44.43 If you're out in the heat - what does the skin do? 00:01:44.47\00:01:46.94 Then it lets out heat to keep your cool down. 00:01:46.97\00:01:50.31 You know, you lose fluid, it evaporates, 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.57 so it helps regulate your temperature. 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.24 It helps protect you. 00:01:55.28\00:01:56.81 Those are some of the two most 00:01:56.85\00:01:59.45 important functions of the skin. 00:01:59.48\00:02:02.08 In fact, a lot of people don't realize that an 00:02:02.12\00:02:04.19 average person can sweat about 3 gallons a day. 00:02:04.22\00:02:09.32 Okay, 3 gallons a day. Really? Wow! 00:02:09.36\00:02:10.76 Yeah, you look at your pets and that's how they lose the fluid, 00:02:10.79\00:02:15.03 but that's quite a bit... I mean 3 gallons a day, 00:02:15.06\00:02:17.97 that sounds like a lot - I'm going to have to check on that. 00:02:18.00\00:02:20.34 But it might be - I'll have to check, 00:02:20.37\00:02:22.10 but it might have been 3 quarts a day. 00:02:22.14\00:02:23.47 But basically, we lose a lot of fluid from our skin. Right 00:02:23.51\00:02:26.51 Remind me to check on that one, that sounded like a lot. 00:02:26.54\00:02:28.81 I'll do that! I don't know which. 00:02:28.84\00:02:30.35 Now the doctor, that's important. 00:02:30.38\00:02:31.81 Now how do you know if you have a skin problem 00:02:31.85\00:02:33.98 that needs a doctor? Yeah right 00:02:34.02\00:02:35.35 Well almost everyone out there, at some point, 00:02:35.38\00:02:38.42 they've had a funny rash on them. 00:02:38.45\00:02:40.66 And it behooves everyone to understand 00:02:40.69\00:02:44.19 what's an important rash and what's not an important rash. 00:02:44.23\00:02:47.53 The specialist in that is called, "dermatologist," 00:02:47.56\00:02:50.73 skin - derm - dermatologist, a specialist in skin. 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.70 So all they do is they are a specialist in looking at 00:02:53.74\00:02:56.71 all the different conditions and rashes that come with the skin. 00:02:56.74\00:02:59.91 Then when you go to them, they look at it, 00:02:59.94\00:03:01.91 and most of the time a great dermatologist has seen 00:03:01.94\00:03:04.21 everything - they know what it is and what to do immediately. 00:03:04.25\00:03:07.72 So if you ever have a skin condition that won't go away, 00:03:07.75\00:03:11.15 that's a major issue, then a dermatologist 00:03:11.19\00:03:14.09 is the person to go to. 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.12 You have conditions like psoriasis and eczema 00:03:16.16\00:03:20.30 that we see - those are type of skin conditions 00:03:20.33\00:03:22.50 that people go to. 00:03:22.53\00:03:23.87 Moles and things that are turning colors, growing, 00:03:23.90\00:03:27.34 that's a place to see a dermatologist. 00:03:27.37\00:03:29.87 There are some types of infections 00:03:29.90\00:03:31.81 that get on the skin. 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.17 We've seen fungal infections where you have itches 00:03:33.21\00:03:37.11 and you scratch it a lot and it's not an exposure, 00:03:37.15\00:03:40.95 it's just a fungus that's there. Right 00:03:40.98\00:03:43.25 And you would treat that with an antifungal. 00:03:43.28\00:03:45.72 We talked about this here... This is a steroid 00:03:45.75\00:03:48.89 cream and this would be good for just a local inflammation. 00:03:48.92\00:03:52.19 But you wouldn't want to put this on a fungus infection... 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.06 You would want an antifungal. Okay 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.47 Yeah, something that would get at the cause of the problem. 00:03:57.50\00:03:59.97 And the skin is like any other organ that we've talked about, 00:04:00.00\00:04:03.54 or any organ system because you want to get at the cause, 00:04:03.57\00:04:06.61 and use medicines to sort of get you over the hump. 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.74 So the first thing in these skin conditions is go to 00:04:09.78\00:04:13.21 somebody that can identify what it is - if you don't know it. 00:04:13.25\00:04:16.12 Now there are sometimes you can have a condition 00:04:16.15\00:04:18.32 that's very common called, "contact dermatitis." 00:04:18.35\00:04:22.39 That's where you're in contact with something that irritates 00:04:22.42\00:04:25.49 your skin and it causes inflammation. 00:04:25.53\00:04:28.00 This steroid cream would be very good for that inflammation 00:04:28.03\00:04:31.90 because of the inflammatory response that comes by 00:04:31.93\00:04:35.14 what would do with clothes, 00:04:37.87\00:04:40.28 a different cleaner might do it. 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.88 Some people might have something that blows on their skin 00:04:42.91\00:04:45.65 that could irritate it. Right 00:04:45.68\00:04:47.08 All sorts of things can cause it. 00:04:47.12\00:04:48.45 You know, if you wear clothes that are too tight 00:04:48.48\00:04:51.05 for long periods of time, 00:04:51.09\00:04:52.45 sometimes that can cause irritation 00:04:52.49\00:04:54.02 and a rash and irritation. Yes 00:04:54.06\00:04:55.96 So lots of things, but what I want to advise people, 00:04:55.99\00:04:57.86 if you have something that will not go away, 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.60 it's there a long time, something that's changing 00:05:00.63\00:05:03.53 that you need help with right away or if you have a rash 00:05:03.57\00:05:07.07 and other symptoms - that's the time to get help right away 00:05:07.10\00:05:10.64 because sometimes, like we said, a rash could be a sign 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.01 of a condition like "lupus," could be a sign of an other 00:05:13.04\00:05:16.11 medical condition and, of course, the most serious 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.65 thing we think of is... is this a sign of a skin cancer? 00:05:18.68\00:05:22.45 Now we know that water is very important to our skin. YES! 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.22 Both to drink water and also to wash with water. 00:05:25.25\00:05:28.39 What makes our skin smelly sometimes? 00:05:28.42\00:05:30.73 Yeah, well, the skin gets smelly 00:05:30.76\00:05:33.56 because of the bacteria in the skin. 00:05:33.60\00:05:37.80 The skin constantly sort of secretes this greasy stuff, 00:05:37.83\00:05:41.97 and bacteria love warm, moist, dark places, 00:05:42.00\00:05:45.17 that's where they like to grow. 00:05:45.21\00:05:46.94 So if something is warm, moist and dark 00:05:46.98\00:05:48.51 over long periods of time whether it be under the 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.75 underarms or in creases of skin, and especially if 00:05:50.78\00:05:54.25 it's moist - that's when bacteria start to grow, 00:05:54.28\00:05:58.22 and that's why it's so important to stay clean. Yeah 00:05:58.25\00:06:01.76 And remember, water is good for the inside, 00:06:01.79\00:06:04.13 but it's also good for the outside. 00:06:04.16\00:06:05.86 We want to keep those parts of us clean, 00:06:05.89\00:06:07.66 and we also want to keep those parts of us 00:06:07.70\00:06:10.87 you know, we want them dry, because if it gets 00:06:10.90\00:06:14.04 moist over long periods of time, that's a place where 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.74 bacteria, fungus and things like that can sort of grow 00:06:16.77\00:06:19.37 and take over. 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.14 So warm, moist - not good for the skin. 00:06:21.18\00:06:23.81 Dry - really good for the skin. 00:06:23.85\00:06:26.25 And we also know that sunlight is an important thing for us, 00:06:26.28\00:06:29.35 but what about sunscreen? 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.79 Who should wear sunscreen and how long should 00:06:30.82\00:06:33.19 we worry about sun exposure? 00:06:33.22\00:06:34.56 Well this is very interesting, Nick, is that for many years 00:06:34.59\00:06:39.19 in the history of the earth, people have been exposed 00:06:39.23\00:06:42.46 to the sun, and 500 years ago, they didn't have sunscreen. 00:06:42.50\00:06:48.94 Did those people do poorly? I don't know. 00:06:48.97\00:06:51.51 But what the dangerous thing is about the skin is when 00:06:51.54\00:06:54.11 it's prolonged exposure to the rays. 00:06:54.14\00:06:57.95 And what it does is, it damages the skin, 00:06:57.98\00:07:00.08 and then people get sunburn. 00:07:00.12\00:07:01.58 So sunburn is not good and now for those that like to lie 00:07:01.62\00:07:05.52 in tanning beds, we found out that tanning beds 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.89 isn't so good for the skin. 00:07:08.92\00:07:10.69 But it is good for the skin to get out and get some sun, 00:07:10.73\00:07:13.43 and get some color as long as you don't burn. 00:07:13.46\00:07:16.23 And, we've recommended that at least you would be out 00:07:16.26\00:07:19.00 in the sun at least 30 minutes 3 times a day, 00:07:19.03\00:07:21.37 but we don't want to burn. 00:07:21.40\00:07:22.80 And people that have long sun exposure, 00:07:22.84\00:07:25.71 that's not healthy either, so let's say you're a lifeguard, 00:07:25.74\00:07:29.61 now you used to go out and ski a lot, right? 00:07:29.64\00:07:31.51 Yeah, I used to teach kids in summer camp 00:07:31.55\00:07:32.95 how to water ski. Now I have a question... 00:07:33.01\00:07:34.35 Your skin was exposed for pretty long periods of time. Yeah 00:07:34.38\00:07:38.82 Unfortunately probably too long. 00:07:38.85\00:07:40.46 Did you brown or burn? 00:07:40.49\00:07:42.02 The first part of the season, I might burn once or twice, 00:07:42.06\00:07:45.49 but then I'd brown pretty well after that. 00:07:45.53\00:07:46.96 So, you might be one, if you're going to be out 00:07:47.00\00:07:49.23 for long periods of time, you want to protect your skin, 00:07:49.26\00:07:52.53 not so much for the acute event, but for 20 years down the road.. 00:07:52.57\00:07:56.87 Because you damage your skin when you're young, 00:07:56.91\00:07:58.81 then when you're older a couple of things happen. 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.84 One is that you're at a higher risk of cancer. 00:08:00.88\00:08:03.01 Two, premature aging. 00:08:03.04\00:08:05.51 You know, too much burning of the skin causes wrinkles 00:08:05.55\00:08:08.15 and damages the skin in that way. 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.02 So a person like that would benefit from being on 00:08:10.05\00:08:12.85 a sunscreen - you know, one of the SP sunscreens, 00:08:12.89\00:08:15.59 and they have different strengths that block the sun. 00:08:15.62\00:08:18.29 And so a person like that... For instance, I know marathon 00:08:18.33\00:08:22.26 runners that are fair-skinned... 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.47 They're going to be out running all day. 00:08:24.50\00:08:26.57 Well those are people that might benefit from being on 00:08:26.60\00:08:29.20 a sunscreen to help block the sun, so when they're 00:08:29.24\00:08:32.11 not running 6 or 8 hours into the race, 00:08:32.14\00:08:34.58 then they get a sun burn and they have lots of pain 00:08:34.61\00:08:38.08 to go with everything else. 00:08:38.11\00:08:39.51 But I find if people will take care of their skin, 00:08:39.55\00:08:42.32 and be smart about how they get out and just gradually 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.52 build up, then the pigment will be able to accept 00:08:45.55\00:08:48.12 that without burning. 00:08:48.16\00:08:49.79 Now tell me, how can I tell if a discoloration on my skin 00:08:49.82\00:08:54.20 is cancer? 00:08:54.23\00:08:55.80 Well, sometimes it's hard to tell exactly if it's cancer, 00:08:55.83\00:08:59.60 but there's a couple of characteristics of skin cancer 00:08:59.63\00:09:02.70 that people should be aware of. 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.24 So if you look a mole... 00:09:05.27\00:09:07.68 A fancy name for mole is called a "nevi," 00:09:07.71\00:09:10.08 and I'm looking to see if I have a mole here on my skin that's.. 00:09:10.11\00:09:14.92 I've got some normal moles, but if you look at a mole, 00:09:14.95\00:09:17.85 and it's starting to change colors, it's turning blue 00:09:17.89\00:09:21.42 or it's getting hair growing out of it, 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.39 that's one sign that's not good. 00:09:24.43\00:09:26.26 It becomes crusty - it starts bleeding - that's not good! 00:09:26.29\00:09:31.43 If it has a change in the contour, that's not good. 00:09:31.47\00:09:35.74 Or anytime you just have something that comes up 00:09:35.77\00:09:38.57 that used to not be there and it's changing quickly, 00:09:38.61\00:09:41.84 and it is growing quickly. 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.21 Well that's one that, if I were you, I would go to the 00:09:43.24\00:09:46.05 dermatologist and when you go to the dermatologist, 00:09:46.08\00:09:49.38 he'll look at it and say, "Oh, that could be a skin cancer, 00:09:49.42\00:09:51.95 let's do a biopsy and there's a simple procedure where they do 00:09:51.99\00:09:55.52 what they call a "punch biopsy," where they take it out, 00:09:55.56\00:09:57.99 they look at it under the microscope. 00:09:58.03\00:10:00.00 If it is a skin cancer, they can determine what it is 00:10:00.03\00:10:03.77 and make sure the margins and all cancer is gone. 00:10:03.80\00:10:06.50 They can do it right there that is called a "Mohs" procedure. 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.60 So very skilled doctors can continue making sure the cancer 00:10:09.64\00:10:12.91 is resected. 00:10:12.94\00:10:14.34 They can tell you if it is cancer. 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.21 They can also say, "Well this is just "seborrheic dermatitis" 00:10:16.24\00:10:19.28 or something that's not serious. 00:10:19.31\00:10:20.65 Or this is just a routine nevi 00:10:20.68\00:10:23.12 that doesn't need to be worried about. 00:10:23.18\00:10:24.99 So a dermatologist is the best to do that, 00:10:25.02\00:10:26.79 and sometimes people have moles 00:10:26.82\00:10:28.32 that are irritating on their skin that causes bleeding 00:10:28.36\00:10:31.03 and we see that in people that have clothes that are 00:10:31.06\00:10:34.03 in bad positions and it keeps rubbing on a mole 00:10:34.06\00:10:37.10 or nevi and they could take that away with 00:10:37.13\00:10:39.97 numerous ways even with cold. 00:10:40.00\00:10:42.57 They can get a cold-pack type thing, 00:10:42.60\00:10:44.31 they can get those moles gone so it doesn't bother you. 00:10:44.34\00:10:47.08 So getting back to your question... 00:10:47.11\00:10:48.54 If it's changing colors, if it's growing, 00:10:48.58\00:10:50.18 if it's bleeding, if it looks ugly or just 00:10:50.21\00:10:52.31 doesn't look right to you, get some help. 00:10:52.35\00:10:54.75 Now that's another good point... 00:10:54.78\00:10:56.12 You cannot see all your skin surface, can you, Nick? 00:10:56.15\00:10:58.45 No, I sure can't. 00:10:58.49\00:10:59.82 I can't see behind me, I don't have... 00:10:59.85\00:11:01.36 So you should occasionally have someone 00:11:01.39\00:11:03.69 look at your entire skin. 00:11:03.73\00:11:06.16 And that includes the scalp which is not 00:11:06.19\00:11:08.56 looked at very much, the skin behind the ears, 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.53 the skin in the back, the skin all over your body, 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.77 just to make sure you don't have a suspicious mole growing. 00:11:13.80\00:11:18.51 It's recommended that at certain ages that we have a 00:11:18.54\00:11:21.84 complete skin exam by a doctor. 00:11:21.88\00:11:24.05 And I don't know, most people have never had their entire 00:11:24.08\00:11:27.38 skin surface looked at, but I think that it's a very 00:11:27.42\00:11:31.49 good thing to do occasionally 00:11:31.52\00:11:32.85 so you can keep track of it... 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.62 I've known a few people that have melanoma. 00:11:35.66\00:11:37.63 That's the most serious skin cancer that exists, 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.36 and if a melanoma has spread and is not detected early, 00:11:40.40\00:11:44.33 that is very fatal and a very dangerous form of skin cancer. 00:11:44.37\00:11:48.30 So I want to advise everyone that's watching there 00:11:48.34\00:11:50.57 if you have a funny spot, have a dermatologist 00:11:50.61\00:11:53.21 or your doctor take a look at it. 00:11:53.24\00:11:54.74 Have your spouse, friend, loved one or someone that you like 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.48 a lot look at the back part of your body, 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.75 the parts of your body that you can't see, 00:11:59.78\00:12:01.55 to make sure that you don't have a suspicious mole growing 00:12:01.58\00:12:03.89 that might be a cancer. That's a good idea. 00:12:03.92\00:12:05.95 And you mentioned the scalp earlier and we have another 00:12:06.09\00:12:08.46 question that has come in from a viewer that asks: 00:12:08.49\00:12:10.29 "Is balding caused by bad skin?" 00:12:10.33\00:12:13.19 Balding caused by bad skin. 00:12:13.23\00:12:14.96 Well, I looked into that a little bit because I was 00:12:15.00\00:12:18.13 going to get one of those balding... 00:12:18.17\00:12:19.97 You know, I'm losing a few, in my hair and I was wondering 00:12:20.00\00:12:23.54 if I should get one of those special creams to do, 00:12:23.57\00:12:26.47 you know, wanted to do that. Sure 00:12:26.51\00:12:27.84 Well, it's not due to bad skin, but it's due to 00:12:27.88\00:12:31.11 mainly it's a genetic thing for most of us. 00:12:31.15\00:12:34.02 Now there are certain medical conditions that cause balding, 00:12:34.05\00:12:36.89 you know, thyroid disease and certain things like that, 00:12:36.92\00:12:40.12 but most males with male pattern balding 00:12:40.16\00:12:42.82 is a genetic thing and unfortunately 00:12:42.86\00:12:46.13 there's a lot of hair care products out there 00:12:46.16\00:12:48.30 for alopecia and most of them don't help a lot. 00:12:48.33\00:12:51.80 But what does seem to help is to get more blood flow 00:12:51.83\00:12:55.67 to the skin. Right 00:12:55.70\00:12:57.64 That seems to help the skin out quite a bit. 00:12:57.67\00:12:59.94 So in the products that seem to help, 00:12:59.97\00:13:01.64 if you're losing hair, one thing that might help 00:13:01.68\00:13:04.38 is to rub the part of the body that's losing hair 00:13:04.41\00:13:07.65 and it can grow - it can get more blood supply to it... 00:13:07.68\00:13:11.62 That might help retard it if it's genetics. 00:13:11.65\00:13:14.32 You know what I don't understand, Nick, is I'm losing 00:13:14.36\00:13:16.69 more hair on my head, but I'm growing 00:13:16.73\00:13:19.49 more hair in other parts of my body including my ears! 00:13:19.53\00:13:23.30 You know, that's crazy - my ears and my nose, 00:13:23.33\00:13:25.57 plenty of hair there but up here it's going away! 00:13:25.60\00:13:28.30 But it's not really a systemic skin condition, 00:13:28.34\00:13:30.87 it's more of a genetic condition. 00:13:30.91\00:13:32.44 We've got another viewer who asks: 00:13:32.47\00:13:34.08 "My skin is dry, what should I do?" 00:13:34.11\00:13:36.21 How do you work with dry skin? 00:13:36.24\00:13:37.71 Dry skin, let me drink a glass of water here... 00:13:37.75\00:13:41.35 That's one of the most common skin problems we have 00:13:41.38\00:13:44.89 is dry skin. 00:13:44.92\00:13:46.25 When the skin gets dry, the problem is 00:13:46.29\00:13:48.39 that people start itching it and they rub it, 00:13:48.42\00:13:51.63 and before long, it gets inflamed and it gets sort of 00:13:51.66\00:13:54.30 like what we call, "dermatitis," and then all of a sudden 00:13:54.33\00:13:58.33 sometimes people rub it so much that the skin breaks. 00:13:58.37\00:14:01.87 And then when the skin breaks, because there's bacteria 00:14:01.90\00:14:04.41 on the skin, you're subject to infections. 00:14:04.44\00:14:06.81 So dry skin is a fairly serious problem. 00:14:06.84\00:14:09.51 The first thing that I think the most important thing for 00:14:09.54\00:14:12.01 dry skin is: (a) Drink more water. 00:14:12.05\00:14:14.92 Make sure you're very, very, very well-hydrated. 00:14:14.95\00:14:19.02 That's very important. 00:14:19.05\00:14:20.82 Some people that take hot showers sometimes 00:14:20.86\00:14:23.66 can have problems with dry skin. 00:14:23.69\00:14:25.23 And there are certain parts of the body that are more 00:14:25.26\00:14:27.90 prone to dry skin. 00:14:27.93\00:14:29.50 Down where the socks are, that area, tends to be 00:14:29.53\00:14:32.67 more prone to dry skin and in parts of the skin that are 00:14:32.70\00:14:35.50 very dry, in addition to drinking water, 00:14:35.54\00:14:38.07 there are also some very good products that are out there 00:14:38.11\00:14:41.54 that help moisturize the skin and that can help 00:14:41.58\00:14:44.81 moisturize the skin. 00:14:44.85\00:14:46.18 I use one called "Eucerin Cream," but there are 00:14:46.21\00:14:51.15 also other different types of moisturizers 00:14:51.19\00:14:54.96 that work as well and your pharmacist or dermatologist 00:14:54.99\00:14:58.96 will lead you in that direction. 00:14:58.99\00:15:00.70 Dry skin, especially in the cold in the winter, 00:15:00.73\00:15:04.10 it's very important as people have more dry skin. 00:15:04.13\00:15:07.54 And the real danger is if you don't get that taken care of, 00:15:07.57\00:15:10.94 it can lead to other problems. Right 00:15:10.97\00:15:12.97 I don't like dry skin. Right! 00:15:13.01\00:15:14.64 We've got another question: "What about acne?" 00:15:14.68\00:15:16.95 "I'm a very self-conscious, 18-year-old, I need help." 00:15:16.98\00:15:20.75 What do we do about acne? 00:15:20.78\00:15:22.12 Well acne is a very big problem and it's bacteria on the skin, 00:15:22.15\00:15:26.05 lots of hormones and things going on in kids. 00:15:26.09\00:15:28.82 We see it flare up a lot, but, you know, I was 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.66 reading a recent study - I do a lot of work with nutritionists 00:15:31.69\00:15:36.13 and Dr. Greger is one of the nutritionists I work with, 00:15:36.16\00:15:39.20 he's a doctor that studies that and he found 00:15:39.23\00:15:41.04 out that if guys and gals and that would just go 00:15:41.07\00:15:45.71 to a whole food, plant-based diet and get all that 00:15:45.74\00:15:49.78 garbage food out of them, that's something that really 00:15:51.08\00:15:53.92 helps in the development of acne. 00:15:53.95\00:15:56.45 Now if it goes beyond that, of course, there are 00:15:56.48\00:15:59.02 creams that can be used. 00:15:59.05\00:16:00.39 In severe cases, they give some antibiotics, 00:16:00.42\00:16:02.86 but I want to tell those that are fighting with acne 00:16:02.89\00:16:04.73 right now - try going to a whole food, plant-based diet, 00:16:05.16\00:16:10.23 and see if that won't really help turn the acne around. 00:16:10.27\00:16:13.57 Everyone that I've seen that's gone on a strict diet like that 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.20 has had dramatic improvements in their skin. 00:16:16.24\00:16:19.44 In fact, everyone that wants to have healthier skin, 00:16:19.47\00:16:22.64 that's something they can do. 00:16:22.68\00:16:24.65 One of the things that that type of diet does is it 00:16:24.68\00:16:27.05 removes fat and protein and all these other junk 00:16:27.08\00:16:30.59 that our skin gets - it can remove that, 00:16:30.62\00:16:33.22 and the other thing it does is it helps our blood vessels 00:16:33.25\00:16:35.89 of our skin become healthier and get a healthier blood supply. 00:16:35.92\00:16:39.46 So people that eat a healthy diet, lots of whole foods, 00:16:39.49\00:16:42.76 lots of real foods, gets a better blood supply; 00:16:42.80\00:16:45.57 they look more alive; they're more dynamic; 00:16:45.60\00:16:47.90 they have a better blood supply; 00:16:47.94\00:16:49.37 their skin just works better and functions better. 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.84 It's something that's underestimated in the care of 00:16:51.87\00:16:55.34 the skin is our nutrition, so I want everyone to 00:16:55.38\00:16:58.21 eat that whole food, plant-based diet. 00:16:58.25\00:17:00.18 We'll do that and we'll drink some water and try 00:17:00.22\00:17:02.28 and stay out of the sun. We'll do that. 00:17:02.32\00:17:05.09 We hope this has been beneficial for you at home. 00:17:05.12\00:17:07.36 Stay tuned, Dr. Marcum is going to lead us 00:17:07.39\00:17:08.86 in prayer in just a moment. 00:17:08.89\00:17:10.23 We've been learning about the skin today and I want to just 00:17:15.20\00:17:18.03 take some time to pray for each one of you. 00:17:18.07\00:17:20.74 Father God, Please help all of our 00:17:20.77\00:17:22.77 viewers who are watching today. 00:17:22.80\00:17:24.74 We want to help them to be healthier and to 00:17:24.77\00:17:26.91 come into a close relationship with you and continue to 00:17:26.94\00:17:29.54 take great care of their body. 00:17:29.58\00:17:31.18 This is our prayer... Amen 00:17:31.21\00:17:32.71 I want to thank you for joining us on "Ultimate Prescription" 00:17:32.75\00:17:37.22 Go to our website: heartwiseministries.org 00:17:37.25\00:17:39.75 if you have more questions. 00:17:39.79\00:17:41.12 Until next time, I'm Dr. James Marcum 00:17:41.16\00:17:43.59
