There is a connection there. 00:00:14.82\00:00:17.19 A lot of people don't understand that, 00:00:17.20\00:00:19.03 there's a connection between 00:00:19.04\00:00:20.27 health and a relationship with God. 00:00:20.28\00:00:22.40 I want just to say real quickly here 00:00:22.41\00:00:24.06 something I think is very important. 00:00:24.07\00:00:25.59 Health is not about God loving us. 00:00:27.51\00:00:30.40 God loves us no matter what our health is like, 00:00:30.41\00:00:33.62 God loves us no matter 00:00:33.63\00:00:35.29 what awful things we do to ourselves, 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.30 God loves us and wants to save us. 00:00:37.31\00:00:39.57 That is not the issue but there is an issue here 00:00:39.58\00:00:42.82 about our ability to love God. 00:00:42.83\00:00:46.12 Our ability to understand God's voice in our lives, 00:00:46.13\00:00:50.54 our ability to discern what God has in mind for us 00:00:50.55\00:00:54.82 and the only way we can do that optimally 00:00:54.83\00:00:59.03 where God can easily talk to us and get through to us 00:00:59.04\00:01:01.92 is to be in health, just as simple as that. 00:01:01.93\00:01:03.98 So God in the Bible said okay, here's what you need. 00:01:03.99\00:01:07.06 I am gonna put it out there in Genesis, 00:01:07.07\00:01:08.60 I'm gonna put it all out there, 00:01:08.61\00:01:09.68 gonna lay it all out there for you 00:01:09.69\00:01:11.17 so that you just follow the principles 00:01:11.18\00:01:12.91 I put in Genesis and if you do that 00:01:12.92\00:01:15.67 then our lines of communications, 00:01:15.68\00:01:17.91 yours and mine, your mind where you need 00:01:17.92\00:01:20.56 to have that communication will be clear. 00:01:20.57\00:01:23.35 That's what it's all about and that's why we talk about 00:01:23.36\00:01:25.95 the biblical model of health here. 00:01:25.96\00:01:28.13 Not just the scientific, 00:01:28.14\00:01:29.26 there's a place for that, not just the scientific 00:01:29.27\00:01:31.18 but also the biblical model for health. 00:01:31.19\00:01:33.29 And one of those biblical models we talked about 00:01:33.30\00:01:35.29 is letting light into our life, the truth into our life, 00:01:35.30\00:01:39.48 getting enough water, getting enough fresh air, 00:01:39.49\00:01:42.67 eating the right foods that God made 00:01:42.68\00:01:44.56 available to us in Eden and also-- 00:01:44.57\00:01:47.35 now that will be a whole food plan based at-- 00:01:47.36\00:01:49.07 and also we're talking about right now is that rest, 00:01:49.08\00:01:52.24 that circadian rhythm that takes place, 00:01:52.25\00:01:54.99 the day and night rhythm. 00:01:55.00\00:01:56.33 Well said, Charles, and you know 00:01:56.34\00:01:58.03 I want to add a little bit to that. 00:01:58.04\00:01:59.38 Well said and that's what we want to try to do 00:01:59.39\00:02:02.30 in this program, you know there's 00:02:02.31\00:02:03.62 a lot of people out there 00:02:03.63\00:02:04.65 that are talking about modern medicine, 00:02:04.66\00:02:06.52 there's a lot of people that are talking about lifestyle, 00:02:06.53\00:02:08.39 but what we want to add 00:02:08.40\00:02:09.91 is the ultimate prescription, the great physician 00:02:09.92\00:02:12.39 is the one that brings it all together. 00:02:12.40\00:02:14.22 This is a part of medical treatment, 00:02:14.23\00:02:16.44 this is a part of healing, it cannot be left out. 00:02:16.45\00:02:19.44 And yet so many patients I see, 00:02:19.45\00:02:21.08 we leave that out and I don't know why we do that. 00:02:21.09\00:02:23.65 I don't know if it's at work. 00:02:23.66\00:02:25.12 We're not comfortable talking about it 00:02:25.13\00:02:27.37 but the great physician has these biblical treatments, 00:02:27.38\00:02:30.51 these technologies that have been 00:02:30.52\00:02:32.41 passed down from us that changes our chemistry. 00:02:32.42\00:02:34.96 Science is proving it and it's almost like 00:02:34.97\00:02:37.05 we want to ignore that. Right. 00:02:37.06\00:02:38.84 It's almost like we're been kept in dark about 00:02:38.85\00:02:40.72 all these wonderful treatments and we're talking about 00:02:40.73\00:02:43.36 rest as a treatment and prevention from disease 00:02:43.37\00:02:46.17 and you would feel shortchanged 00:02:46.18\00:02:47.39 if you came to me and I wrote, Charles, rest. 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.20 Rest at night, here's how to do it, take a day off. 00:02:50.21\00:02:53.61 Now I take care of a lot of ministers 00:02:53.62\00:02:55.87 and there might be a lot of ministers out there. 00:02:55.88\00:02:57.76 Ministers have the hardest time 00:02:57.77\00:02:59.54 I think about taking a weekly rest. 00:02:59.55\00:03:01.98 During their day of rest they are serving. 00:03:01.99\00:03:04.95 So it's a lot more challenging for them to have 00:03:04.96\00:03:07.18 a down day where they can both rest 00:03:07.19\00:03:09.89 physically and spiritually. 00:03:09.90\00:03:12.01 Now we have a bunch of questions 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.49 that have come into our website about rest. 00:03:13.50\00:03:15.14 Yes, we do, let's get to them right now. 00:03:15.15\00:03:16.94 This is the www.heart wiseministries.org website. 00:03:16.95\00:03:20.85 Okay, here we go. 00:03:20.86\00:03:22.04 Here is the first question for rest and sleep. 00:03:22.05\00:03:26.04 This is Rosetta in New Mexico, 00:03:26.05\00:03:28.27 "I am in the habit of taking sleeping pills 00:03:28.28\00:03:30.98 at night and still do not rest well. 00:03:30.99\00:03:33.89 Can sleeping pills make matters worse?" 00:03:33.90\00:03:36.16 Is the question. Yeah. 00:03:36.17\00:03:37.16 Rosetta, absolutely, sleeping pills 00:03:37.17\00:03:40.18 can make the matters worse. 00:03:40.19\00:03:42.34 And what approach that I would want to take 00:03:42.35\00:03:44.47 first with you is why don't you sleep well? 00:03:44.48\00:03:46.92 Let's look at the things that cause 00:03:46.93\00:03:48.54 people not to sleep well. 00:03:48.55\00:03:50.38 Is it that you have a lot of stress in your life? 00:03:50.39\00:03:52.52 Could you have a medical condition like 00:03:52.53\00:03:54.19 sleep apnea or over-active thyroid? 00:03:54.20\00:03:57.04 Could you be eating a big meal at night? 00:03:57.05\00:03:59.23 Could you be taking stimulants like caffeine, nicotine? 00:03:59.24\00:04:02.77 Is there alcohol that you might be taking? 00:04:02.78\00:04:04.80 Are you are watching a lot of television? 00:04:04.81\00:04:06.51 Are you not getting enough exercise? 00:04:06.52\00:04:08.61 So I would approach it from that approach first, 00:04:08.62\00:04:10.57 is why you're not sleeping and try to make 00:04:10.58\00:04:12.16 those changes and change you chemically. 00:04:12.17\00:04:14.11 Now, Charles, sleeping pills, a lot of people take those. 00:04:14.12\00:04:17.64 They are addictive and yet there's never been a study 00:04:17.65\00:04:20.45 that shows that people that take them rest better 00:04:20.46\00:04:23.27 and there's been some studies that shows 00:04:23.28\00:04:24.87 that cognitive function of people 00:04:24.88\00:04:26.74 that take sleeping pills is worse. 00:04:26.75\00:04:29.26 So it does--it knocks you out but it doesn't help you 00:04:29.27\00:04:32.42 necessarily do better and I see unfortunately, 00:04:32.43\00:04:34.73 a lot of older people that are on these medications, 00:04:34.74\00:04:37.81 they don't think as well, they get up at night, 00:04:37.82\00:04:40.28 they fall down, they break their hip, 00:04:40.29\00:04:41.81 now they got another problem. 00:04:41.82\00:04:43.81 Every medicine comes with a risk and yet sleeping pills, 00:04:43.82\00:04:47.05 this is a billion dollar industry now. 00:04:47.06\00:04:49.44 So back to Rosetta's question, 00:04:49.45\00:04:51.35 can sleeping pills make matter worse? 00:04:51.36\00:04:53.35 Absolutely. What's the solution? 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.28 Well, let's find out, Rosetta, 00:04:55.29\00:04:56.79 if possible why you're not resting well. 00:04:56.80\00:04:59.53 In the book I just written called 00:04:59.54\00:05:01.06 "The Ultimate Prescription," we talk a little bit 00:05:01.07\00:05:03.76 about all the different ways people can rest better 00:05:03.77\00:05:06.27 and this might help her a little bit 00:05:06.28\00:05:08.03 getting that or come to our website, 00:05:08.04\00:05:10.05 we can explore your rest problems a little bit more. 00:05:10.06\00:05:12.69 We've had specialists in sleep apnea 00:05:12.70\00:05:14.60 that have given us advice, specialists in sleep 00:05:14.61\00:05:16.85 but this is a very big problem that's facing America 00:05:16.86\00:05:19.67 because if we're not sleeping well, 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.59 we're violating one of God's natural laws, 00:05:21.60\00:05:23.26 it changes our chemistry, 00:05:23.27\00:05:24.91 we can't communicate with our great physician 00:05:24.92\00:05:27.12 as well as we'd like to and it can actually cause 00:05:27.13\00:05:29.59 a lot of other health downstream problem. 00:05:29.60\00:05:31.50 Now there you go back to that word "law." 00:05:31.51\00:05:33.76 When we break these laws, there are consequences. 00:05:33.77\00:05:39.16 Who would have ever thought that sleeping is a law 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.02 but if God put it in place during that creation week, 00:05:42.03\00:05:45.96 He was not only creating an environment for us, 00:05:45.97\00:05:47.95 He was creating laws for us to obey. 00:05:47.96\00:05:49.66 Exactly, and if you stay up all the time, 00:05:49.67\00:05:51.69 you don't get rest, both the nightly rest 00:05:51.70\00:05:53.86 and the weekly rest, there's dark chemical consequence 00:05:53.87\00:05:56.56 and you know what, what's great is we're 00:05:56.57\00:05:58.08 now having science that proves this. 00:05:58.09\00:06:01.10 You know, and everything that God 00:06:01.11\00:06:03.28 said in the Bible is proven by science. 00:06:03.29\00:06:05.34 Never disproven, always proven. 00:06:05.35\00:06:07.96 Now why don't we see a lot of these randomized, 00:06:07.97\00:06:09.91 double-blinded studies on this, 00:06:09.92\00:06:12.04 just not a money maker. 00:06:12.05\00:06:13.72 You know, it's just not a money maker, 00:06:13.73\00:06:15.78 if I say you need to rest better 00:06:15.79\00:06:17.40 or follow God's principles but it's truly 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.47 biblical technology and it's true. 00:06:19.48\00:06:21.37 Now one of the biggest questions I get 00:06:21.38\00:06:22.89 when people ask is how do I know the Bible is true? 00:06:22.90\00:06:25.99 You know, how is that true? 00:06:26.00\00:06:27.00 Now if you don't believe the Bible, 00:06:27.01\00:06:28.95 you know how do you answer these questions? 00:06:28.96\00:06:31.23 How do you believe in biblical technology? 00:06:31.24\00:06:32.94 Well, the fact that science is proving this medically 00:06:32.95\00:06:35.95 tells me that's one reason the Bible is true, 00:06:35.96\00:06:38.90 for me prophesy, archeology, 00:06:38.91\00:06:41.56 all these things are proving it. 00:06:41.57\00:06:42.66 If you look at the Bible but what really convinced me 00:06:42.67\00:06:44.72 that the Bible was true many years ago was I asked God, 00:06:44.73\00:06:47.70 God, prove it to me that your word is true 00:06:47.71\00:06:50.12 and as I studied his word, he became involved in my life 00:06:50.13\00:06:53.47 and he proved to me that the Bible is true 00:06:53.48\00:06:55.46 but this is another great way to prove the Bible is true 00:06:55.47\00:06:57.89 by proving that science proves that the Bible is true 00:06:57.90\00:07:00.42 once again, never wrong. 00:07:00.43\00:07:02.62 All right, our second question here 00:07:02.63\00:07:04.10 from heartwiseministries.org, "How do I know if I am 00:07:04.11\00:07:07.99 suffering from a sleep disorder?" 00:07:08.00\00:07:10.53 Now a sleep disorder, not just 00:07:10.54\00:07:11.69 "I am not sleeping" but a sleep disorder. 00:07:11.70\00:07:13.40 Right, this is--a sleep disorder means something 00:07:13.41\00:07:15.87 is wrong chemically or structurally in the body 00:07:15.88\00:07:18.89 which causes a person not to sleep. 00:07:18.90\00:07:21.54 And it could be like we talked about, 00:07:21.55\00:07:22.93 it could be metabolic, you know, 00:07:22.94\00:07:24.35 we have overactive thyroid, there could be some 00:07:24.36\00:07:26.77 medications that we are taking, 00:07:26.78\00:07:28.45 there's conditions in the brain called central sleep apnea 00:07:28.46\00:07:31.65 where the brain doesn't make the chemicals 00:07:31.66\00:07:33.22 that allow a person to sleep. 00:07:33.23\00:07:34.87 The most common reason people 00:07:34.88\00:07:36.42 don't sleep now is sleep apnea 00:07:36.43\00:07:38.83 and the way we test for people to see 00:07:38.84\00:07:40.81 if they have sleep disorder is first we watch them sleep. 00:07:40.82\00:07:44.15 We watch them sleep, and we put a monitor on them, 00:07:44.16\00:07:46.16 it's called a sleep test, we put monitors 00:07:46.17\00:07:48.40 that look at their oxygen, measure their heart rate, 00:07:48.41\00:07:50.66 see how they do and see why they're not sleeping. 00:07:50.67\00:07:53.18 So the doctor can certainly do this 00:07:53.19\00:07:55.69 and we can see if they are suffering 00:07:55.70\00:07:56.94 from a sleep disorder, but more than that most people 00:07:56.95\00:07:59.71 that I see aren't really suffering 00:07:59.72\00:08:01.82 from a sleep disorder, they're suffering 00:08:01.83\00:08:03.79 from a stressed lifestyle disorder. 00:08:03.80\00:08:06.36 And if they could get that in order first, 00:08:06.37\00:08:08.88 they would not have a sleep problem. 00:08:08.89\00:08:10.60 And it wouldn't cost them anything 00:08:10.61\00:08:12.05 to do that probably, right? 00:08:12.06\00:08:13.08 No, and that's why we wanted to talk to them 00:08:13.09\00:08:14.94 about it today, to talk about all these things 00:08:14.95\00:08:16.81 that people might not be thinking about. 00:08:16.82\00:08:18.98 How many people truly think that sleep 00:08:18.99\00:08:21.04 is a treatment for disease, 00:08:21.05\00:08:22.53 rest is a treatment for disease? 00:08:22.54\00:08:23.98 They think it's an option. Right. 00:08:23.99\00:08:25.23 In addition it's a cause of disease. 00:08:25.24\00:08:27.50 So if we can get that rest cycle 00:08:27.51\00:08:29.17 better by just a few simple principles. 00:08:29.18\00:08:31.44 Like caffeine, if some people have 00:08:31.45\00:08:33.25 a sleep disorder I will tell them 00:08:33.26\00:08:34.36 to eliminate caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, 00:08:34.37\00:08:36.62 exercise, no big meals at night, 00:08:36.63\00:08:39.05 all these things add up and it could change 00:08:39.06\00:08:41.10 our chemistry much more than a pill can. 00:08:41.11\00:08:43.75 All right, here's our third question 00:08:43.76\00:08:45.48 from heartwiseministries.org, "Does vitamin D," oh, yes, 00:08:45.49\00:08:49.89 "Vitamin D and sunlight 00:08:49.90\00:08:51.88 affect my health and sleep pattern?" 00:08:51.89\00:08:54.26 That's from Ronald in Alaska. Thank you, Ronald. 00:08:54.27\00:08:56.25 And that's very good, Ronald. 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.18 In Alaska, that's very high up in the equator. 00:08:58.19\00:09:00.99 You know, some days in Alaska 00:09:01.00\00:09:03.48 are very long but much of them 00:09:03.49\00:09:04.85 you don't have any light at all. 00:09:04.86\00:09:06.66 We know that vitamin D, okay, 00:09:06.67\00:09:08.88 which you get from activation from sunlight 00:09:08.89\00:09:11.04 is essential to many chemical reactions in the body 00:09:11.05\00:09:13.61 including serotonin, which affects depression. 00:09:13.62\00:09:16.88 We know that the higher above the equator you get, 00:09:16.89\00:09:20.06 in fact Eskimos have some of the highest suicide rates 00:09:20.07\00:09:23.38 that are out there because the serotonin 00:09:23.39\00:09:25.48 is important for the chemistry of the brain. 00:09:25.49\00:09:28.19 That's the happy chemical. Yes, the happy chemical. 00:09:28.20\00:09:30.10 So we talked about rest, day night cycles, 00:09:30.11\00:09:33.25 but if your body is not out enjoying the day, 00:09:33.26\00:09:36.60 let's say you're in all the time. 00:09:36.61\00:09:38.63 Even though you are awake, even though you rested, 00:09:38.64\00:09:40.90 you don't go out in that day night cycle, 00:09:40.91\00:09:43.60 you can't enjoy the benefits of the sunlight 00:09:43.61\00:09:46.06 which can turn on this vitamin D. 00:09:46.07\00:09:48.33 Now, I know you you've done some studies 00:09:48.34\00:09:50.89 into vitamin D and how it's turned on and off. 00:09:50.90\00:09:55.56 It's very important for all the chemical reactions. 00:09:55.57\00:09:58.00 You know, you've heard about-- 00:09:58.01\00:09:59.25 Everyone is so concerned about dermatological problems 00:09:59.26\00:10:02.93 if you are in the sunlight, you know, 00:10:02.94\00:10:04.05 getting skin cancer, not really an issue. 00:10:04.06\00:10:06.72 You know, but we've made a big deal about it 00:10:06.73\00:10:08.55 so people don't want to get out in the sunlight. 00:10:08.56\00:10:10.05 So we can sell sun screens. 00:10:10.06\00:10:11.58 So part of this in talking to Ronald in Alaska, 00:10:11.59\00:10:16.46 vitamin D, sunlight affects your health. 00:10:16.47\00:10:18.34 So part of this rhythm is actually getting out 00:10:18.35\00:10:20.45 and enjoying the sunlight 00:10:20.46\00:10:21.87 so all the chemical reactions might run well. 00:10:21.88\00:10:24.33 Don't stay indoors all the time 00:10:24.34\00:10:25.98 and if you're up, in high altitudes, 00:10:25.99\00:10:28.33 we don't get out, some people take lamps 00:10:28.34\00:10:30.39 that supply that and also people might benefit 00:10:30.40\00:10:33.56 from a supplement of vitamin D if you just cannot 00:10:33.57\00:10:36.02 get outside and enjoy this chemical reaction. 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.96 So if you live in a place where your night time lasts 00:10:38.97\00:10:41.66 about three months, vitamin D supplements 00:10:41.67\00:10:44.08 probably would be very beneficial to you. 00:10:44.09\00:10:45.91 You know, and it might prevent depression, 00:10:45.92\00:10:47.83 it might prevent some of these other chemical reactions 00:10:47.84\00:10:49.93 that vitamin D is important for. 00:10:49.94\00:10:51.92 Yeah, all right, very good. 00:10:51.93\00:10:53.89 Well, you know, when we talk about sleep and rest 00:10:53.90\00:10:56.46 is important for us so just keep in mind 00:10:56.47\00:10:58.51 that we're talking about a law here 00:10:58.52\00:10:59.81 that God created for us. 00:10:59.82\00:11:01.49 We're not talking about something as optional, 00:11:01.50\00:11:03.74 we're not talking about a good idea. 00:11:03.75\00:11:05.71 We're talking about an essential idea 00:11:05.72\00:11:07.70 that we make sure that we have that rest 00:11:07.71\00:11:10.43 and that weekly rest is so important to us, 00:11:10.44\00:11:12.25 and I assume, Dr. Marcum, that a yearly rest, 00:11:12.26\00:11:15.91 a vacation might be important. 00:11:15.92\00:11:17.26 Yeah, sabbatical. Sabbatical. 00:11:17.27\00:11:18.87 Sabbatical.
