Welcome back, today we're talking about 00:00:02.60\00:00:03.93 mental health and, Dr. Marcum, we received a lot of questions 00:00:03.97\00:00:06.63 on our website at heartwiseministries.org 00:00:06.67\00:00:09.30 about this topic and what are some of the basics? 00:00:09.34\00:00:12.61 If someone is not sure about their health, 00:00:12.64\00:00:14.54 if they're wanting to see if their mental function 00:00:14.58\00:00:17.85 is where it should be, how do we go about that? 00:00:17.88\00:00:19.48 That's a great question because we see so many... 00:00:19.51\00:00:22.98 you know, 1 in 3 people, 1 in 4 have mental health problems. 00:00:23.02\00:00:26.32 You know people, we need to talk about it, 00:00:26.35\00:00:28.72 and getting back to the basics like we talked about. 00:00:28.76\00:00:31.93 We talked about the food, the nutrition, the water, 00:00:31.96\00:00:35.06 putting good things in our brain, 00:00:35.10\00:00:36.87 getting our brain back to the way it was designed to be. 00:00:36.90\00:00:40.00 Another thing we didn't mention earlier was rest. 00:00:40.04\00:00:43.17 How many people get adequate rest every day, 00:00:43.20\00:00:45.57 and we're just going 24/7, too much stimulation. 00:00:45.61\00:00:49.68 And if we can just rest our brains, 00:00:49.71\00:00:51.18 you know, the God of the universe worked 6 days, 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.48 take a day off and let the brain rest at night. 00:00:53.52\00:00:56.58 We were designed to work during the day and rest at night. 00:00:56.62\00:01:00.42 And, old Edison sort of messed us up when he invented 00:01:00.46\00:01:03.73 the light bulb and now we're up all the time; 00:01:03.76\00:01:06.16 we're stimulated all the time; the brain doesn't rest; 00:01:06.19\00:01:08.86 the brain can't recover; all these stimulations; 00:01:08.90\00:01:11.37 all the things we're putting in it and sooner or later 00:01:11.40\00:01:14.00 some people have better coping skills than others and then 00:01:14.04\00:01:17.51 BOOM, overload - we get into problems! 00:01:17.54\00:01:19.81 Now I am not a psychiatrist, 00:01:19.84\00:01:21.81 I'm not a mental health expert, per se, 00:01:21.84\00:01:24.38 but I think it's something that we need to talk about 00:01:24.41\00:01:27.42 and get people an awareness of where to go for help, 00:01:27.45\00:01:30.82 and, you know, the first place we talked about is go to the 00:01:30.85\00:01:33.76 Heavenly Father for help. 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.12 Now, what would be symptoms of mental health? 00:01:35.16\00:01:38.03 How would a person know they're having mental health problems? 00:01:38.06\00:01:42.00 It might be symptoms like not interested in things. 00:01:42.03\00:01:45.63 Tired all the time. 00:01:45.67\00:01:48.47 Feeling like, "I don't want to live, 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.77 I don't have any purpose in life." 00:01:51.81\00:01:53.54 Those are symptoms of sort of depression. 00:01:53.58\00:01:56.58 Being scared all the time, worried and then, 00:01:56.61\00:01:59.65 of course, when the brain malfunctions, 00:01:59.68\00:02:01.28 sometimes the body malfunctions too. Right 00:02:01.32\00:02:03.72 You know, you can't sleep, you're bowels run all the time, 00:02:03.75\00:02:07.59 have headaches, have a fast heart rate, aches and pains 00:02:07.62\00:02:10.39 that can't be explained all over the body. 00:02:10.43\00:02:12.79 Then the more serious things is when people see things 00:02:12.83\00:02:16.00 and hear things. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.63 You've heard the term, "schizophrenia," 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.53 those are some of the most serious mental health problems. 00:02:19.57\00:02:23.24 And then, there are all sorts of varieties of anxiety and stress, 00:02:23.27\00:02:26.88 you know - post-traumatic stress, anxiety, phobias, fears, 00:02:26.91\00:02:31.35 all those fall within mental health. 00:02:31.38\00:02:33.65 Then there are the types of things like paranoia... 00:02:33.68\00:02:35.65 thinking people are always trying to get ya. 00:02:35.68\00:02:37.75 And then there's people that have their ups and downs, 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.99 you know - the bipolar... one minute they're manic 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.12 and pumped up and the next minute, they hit the rocks 00:02:42.16\00:02:44.69 and bottoms... they call that "manic depression," 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.66 then there's that type of mental problem. 00:02:47.70\00:02:49.80 And then there are many that overlap, 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.07 so mental health problems runs the full gamut 00:02:52.10\00:02:54.47 so if you're having symptoms like this, 00:02:54.50\00:02:56.94 go see your doctor and get some help and see if there might... 00:02:56.97\00:03:00.91 But a lot of times I see the brain malfunction after, 00:03:00.94\00:03:05.38 you know, they come with something else... 00:03:05.41\00:03:07.12 recurrent headaches, heart beating fast, 00:03:07.15\00:03:10.29 can't sleep at night. 00:03:10.32\00:03:11.65 Other symptoms develop because the brain turns on these 00:03:11.69\00:03:14.42 chemicals - adrenalin and cortisol and it affects 00:03:14.46\00:03:18.09 the body downstream. Right 00:03:18.13\00:03:19.69 So if the brain is happy, that's going to improve the 00:03:19.73\00:03:22.70 health dramatically. 00:03:22.73\00:03:24.17 So we have people that have extreme stress 00:03:24.20\00:03:27.47 and extreme stress and anxiety and trigger a heart attack. 00:03:27.50\00:03:30.61 because it makes adrenalin and adrenalin 00:03:30.64\00:03:32.47 makes the arteries constrict. 00:03:32.51\00:03:34.08 So I think that these are great questions that sort of 00:03:34.11\00:03:36.58 get other people involved in learning about their 00:03:36.61\00:03:39.95 mental health and knowing that 00:03:39.98\00:03:41.82 it's a priority for the entire body. 00:03:41.85\00:03:44.45 That's some great advice. 00:03:44.49\00:03:45.82 You know, we have another question that asks... 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.62 "I think I might be depressed?" 00:03:47.66\00:03:48.99 "Are there other options to taking antidepressants?" 00:03:49.02\00:03:52.33 What are some of the treatments? 00:03:52.36\00:03:53.70 Well there are many different treatments out there 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.63 for depression and, first of all, they need to see 00:03:55.66\00:03:58.37 a professional about this. 00:03:58.40\00:04:01.24 And you've heard about the antidepressants, okay? 00:04:01.27\00:04:04.77 But I read a study not too long ago that said... 00:04:04.81\00:04:07.38 "If you will get outside in the sunshine and exercise, 00:04:07.41\00:04:10.88 that can help fight depression the equivalent of taking 00:04:10.91\00:04:14.62 an antidepressant. Wow! 00:04:14.65\00:04:16.18 And it makes more sense to me because that will change 00:04:16.22\00:04:19.12 the chemistry of the entire brain and not just 00:04:19.15\00:04:22.26 one chemical pathway. 00:04:22.29\00:04:24.26 So, that's one thing, is get the things the brain needs. 00:04:24.29\00:04:28.06 I don't know if you've heard about it but... 00:04:28.10\00:04:29.86 I know your folks live up in Alaska. That's right, they do. 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.50 In Alaska, it's dark most of the year. 00:04:32.53\00:04:35.24 And when it's dark, you don't get out in the sunlight, 00:04:35.27\00:04:37.44 you don't make vitamin D, 00:04:37.47\00:04:38.91 so you have a serotonin deficiency. 00:04:38.94\00:04:41.51 So some people get depressed 00:04:41.54\00:04:42.88 just because a serotonin deficiency. Right 00:04:42.91\00:04:44.98 They take vitamin D - serotonin improves. 00:04:45.01\00:04:47.35 Yeah, it's really common in the wintertime. 00:04:47.38\00:04:48.72 Yes, and some people get cabin fever, so-to-speak. 00:04:48.75\00:04:52.25 Then there are situations where people get depressed, 00:04:52.29\00:04:54.76 you know - a loved one loss and sometimes that can 00:04:54.79\00:04:57.23 be worked through with cognitive therapy, 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.69 talking, making sure their nutrition is good, 00:04:59.73\00:05:02.80 exercise - those things too. 00:05:02.83\00:05:04.47 So there's lots of other alternatives to taking 00:05:04.50\00:05:07.80 antidepressants, but this is when you want to see your 00:05:07.84\00:05:10.71 doctor about - ask him what the situation is... 00:05:10.74\00:05:14.08 What I try to do is - if it's mild forms, 00:05:14.11\00:05:16.31 I recommend to try to do these things first, 00:05:16.34\00:05:20.18 and then if that's not working, then see a mental health 00:05:20.22\00:05:23.52 professional about getting some professional advice on 00:05:23.55\00:05:26.59 the way they can help with depression, 00:05:26.62\00:05:28.36 but there are lots of ways... 00:05:28.39\00:05:29.72 We talked a little bit about cognitive therapy, 00:05:29.76\00:05:32.16 and then they help people think better. 00:05:32.19\00:05:35.56 You know, how do you cope with things. 00:05:35.60\00:05:37.27 Sometimes just having friends, you know, what do they say, 00:05:37.30\00:05:41.10 just having some friends to talk to and talk to you about things, 00:05:41.14\00:05:44.84 and help you out. 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.24 We know that the Scripture is a great way to help. 00:05:46.27\00:05:50.01 The Bible says "Come unto Me all ye that are worried 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.78 and are burdened and I will give you rest." 00:05:52.81\00:05:55.12 So we know that worship is a 00:05:55.15\00:05:56.95 proven way to help the brain improve better. 00:05:56.99\00:05:59.05 And you would have to think, you know, if it's going to help 00:05:59.09\00:06:00.99 anxiety, it's going to help other types of brain problems. 00:06:01.02\00:06:03.76 There are a lot of researchers that thought, David 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.86 maybe had bipolar and by coming to God and 00:06:06.90\00:06:10.73 worshiping and through music, that helped 00:06:10.77\00:06:13.27 sort of settle down his highs and lows. 00:06:13.30\00:06:15.50 But it's natural for people to have highs and lows. 00:06:15.54\00:06:18.77 Now how much of that is an organic problem 00:06:18.81\00:06:22.11 and how much of that is a real structural problem, 00:06:22.14\00:06:26.05 that's sort of hard to figure out sometimes, 00:06:26.08\00:06:28.82 and I'm afraid that sometimes the quickest thing is 00:06:28.85\00:06:31.79 to say, "Oh, there's nothing I can do to help, 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.99 you know, I have to accept this way in life." 00:06:35.02\00:06:37.06 But I want people to look at all the inputs and maybe if they 00:06:37.09\00:06:39.93 can put in more positives and less negatives, 00:06:39.96\00:06:43.06 maybe the brain can help heal itself in many circumstances. 00:06:43.10\00:06:47.10 That sounds like some great advice. 00:06:47.14\00:06:49.40 Another viewer has written in: "I worry so much about 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.87 everything - my health and my family, I know this 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.91 makes the situation worse." 00:06:54.94\00:06:56.81 "My doctor gave me an anti-anxiety medication." 00:06:56.85\00:07:00.25 "What other suggestions might you recommend?" 00:07:00.28\00:07:02.28 Well, I think one of the best... 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.69 and you think about anxieties, you worry about things, 00:07:04.72\00:07:08.56 and there are also phobias, you fear things and then the 00:07:08.59\00:07:12.09 most serious anxiety is post-traumatic stress. 00:07:12.13\00:07:15.76 You know that's a very serious form of anxiety. 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.37 And, the body, when it's under anxiety, it makes chemicals 00:07:18.40\00:07:21.70 we talked about some of the chemicals it makes already. 00:07:21.74\00:07:24.57 But I think where I would start is - I would go to the 00:07:24.61\00:07:27.91 text where it says, "Be anxious about nothing," 00:07:27.94\00:07:33.21 in the Bible it says, "Be anxious about nothing." 00:07:33.25\00:07:35.38 God doesn't want us to be anxious. 00:07:35.42\00:07:37.15 He just tells us - "Don't be anxious about nothing." Right 00:07:37.19\00:07:39.32 And then, the next sentence, He starts giving the answers. 00:07:39.35\00:07:42.42 You know - "Come to Me, pray with Me, be with Me, 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.86 worship Me; turn your burdens over to Me; 00:07:44.89\00:07:47.13 let Me handle that for you." 00:07:47.16\00:07:49.06 So for people that are anxious, I think that's a great place 00:07:49.10\00:07:52.30 to start because God will take you to the people 00:07:52.33\00:07:55.94 and the lessons you need to go. 00:07:55.97\00:07:58.27 He might take you to a mental health professional; 00:07:58.31\00:08:00.34 He might take you to a doctor; He might give you 00:08:00.38\00:08:02.84 other things that you can do to get over 00:08:02.88\00:08:04.81 your anxieties and fears. 00:08:04.85\00:08:06.31 One of the things that I've noticed that helps fears 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.95 and anxieties is serving other people. Yeah 00:08:08.98\00:08:11.89 Sometimes that helps get over anxieties where it's 00:08:11.92\00:08:15.22 not all about you, it's not all about the selfishness. 00:08:15.26\00:08:17.56 Start thinking about other people. Yes! 00:08:17.59\00:08:18.93 You start putting love into the equation. Right 00:08:18.96\00:08:20.96 See anxiety, you know you're so focused on me all the time, 00:08:21.00\00:08:24.33 sometimes when you focus on others, 00:08:24.37\00:08:25.80 you start learning to love more and you start learning 00:08:25.83\00:08:28.70 to help more - sometimes that helps with it. 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.51 Now, anxiety medicines - this person is on anxiety medicines, 00:08:31.54\00:08:35.11 what are they going to do, take anxiety medicines 00:08:35.14\00:08:37.81 the rest of their lives? 00:08:37.85\00:08:39.18 And I guess there might be some people that might benefit 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.18 if they had organic problems, but I would, again, 00:08:42.22\00:08:45.05 I would hopefully use this medication only as 00:08:45.09\00:08:48.66 a bridge to help them over the hump until they can 00:08:48.69\00:08:51.99 get at the cause of the problem. Right 00:08:52.03\00:08:53.63 You know, help them get over the rough spot in the road, 00:08:53.66\00:08:55.96 until we can help them - we do that in hearts all the time. 00:08:56.00\00:08:58.17 You know, you're having a heart attack - I want a stent. 00:08:58.20\00:09:00.80 The stent doesn't fix the problem, but maybe now the 00:09:00.84\00:09:03.77 person will say, "Well what caused me to have the 00:09:03.81\00:09:05.71 problem and let me reverse that;" we talked earlier about 00:09:05.74\00:09:08.48 charcoals, someone getting a poison - well the charcoal 00:09:08.51\00:09:11.18 helps get you over the poison hump, 00:09:11.21\00:09:12.65 but let's not do the poisons anymore! Right 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.78 So I think the same thing - if we can find the things 00:09:14.82\00:09:17.05 that are damaging our brain and correct that, 00:09:17.09\00:09:19.95 letting God lead us, I think that's a great place 00:09:19.99\00:09:23.19 to start in recognizing that we don't want to live 00:09:23.22\00:09:26.09 years and years with mental health problems. 00:09:26.13\00:09:27.93 We want to do something right now because the brain 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.57 might interrupt the function of the body, 00:09:30.60\00:09:33.20 and it might lead to other problems, 00:09:33.23\00:09:34.87 and we might mask that... 00:09:34.90\00:09:36.24 Well let's focus on this where the real problem was the brain.. 00:09:36.27\00:09:39.47 It's been estimated that 80-90% of doctor visits now, Nick, 00:09:39.51\00:09:43.61 are caused by stress, world stress - lots of anxiety, 00:09:43.65\00:09:46.85 so it's a big issue and we need to talk about it, 00:09:46.88\00:09:49.58 and, unfortunately, the world is not getting any better. Right 00:09:49.62\00:09:52.85 Now what about someone who has a family history of Alzheimer's? 00:09:52.89\00:09:56.09 Is there something they can do to lower their risk? 00:09:56.12\00:09:57.96 Yeah, anything that's going to improve the function 00:09:57.99\00:10:01.16 of the brain like we talked about 00:10:01.20\00:10:02.93 will help Alzheimer disease. Okay 00:10:02.96\00:10:04.87 Exercising the brain - a lot of people have Alzheimer disease 00:10:04.90\00:10:09.77 because of vascular problems, blood vessel problems. 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.74 We talked about how blood vessels can be enhanced by 00:10:12.77\00:10:16.68 going to a whole food plant-based diet 00:10:16.71\00:10:19.31 with lots of greens, an exercise program, a hydration program. 00:10:19.35\00:10:23.72 One of the things that has been shown in the literature 00:10:23.75\00:10:26.02 to help very well is to read out loud for 10 minutes. 00:10:26.05\00:10:30.19 That's exercise for the brain. 00:10:30.23\00:10:32.56 Unfortunately, I've seen some people, when they get older, 00:10:32.59\00:10:35.70 their brains aren't as active. Right 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.87 They retire and they just sit at home, 00:10:37.90\00:10:39.67 and they don't do anything. 00:10:39.70\00:10:41.04 Well the brain is like any other part of the body, 00:10:41.07\00:10:43.87 it requires movement or activity on a regular basis. Yes 00:10:43.91\00:10:47.58 If you don't use those neurons, you LOSE those neurons. 00:10:47.61\00:10:50.95 So the brain is designed to do things, to be functioning... 00:10:50.98\00:10:54.12 NOT to be entertained! Right 00:10:54.15\00:10:55.88 Unfortunately our modern media entertains our brains, 00:10:55.92\00:10:59.32 and that sort of hurts our brains and it changes 00:10:59.35\00:11:01.36 the way we think and the way the neurons work. 00:11:01.39\00:11:03.83 But so the more our brain can stay active... 00:11:03.86\00:11:06.26 And I think if you read the Scripture out loud 00:11:06.29\00:11:08.50 10 minutes a day, that's a great thing because you 00:11:08.53\00:11:10.87 see it, you say it, you hear it, you think about it, 00:11:10.90\00:11:14.54 you come in to worship, lots of things can happen 00:11:14.57\00:11:17.27 good for the brain when we do that. 00:11:17.31\00:11:18.64 You throw in some service, eating the right foods, 00:11:18.67\00:11:22.01 doing the right exercise, staying away from 00:11:22.04\00:11:24.51 vascular problems and all of a sudden, 00:11:24.55\00:11:26.61 you've optimized your brain function. 00:11:26.65\00:11:29.78 We've got time for one more question here... 00:11:29.82\00:11:31.85 It's about someone whose son has ADD. 00:11:31.89\00:11:33.99 "What are some ways to help with ADD?" 00:11:34.02\00:11:36.09 A lot of people now have "attention deficit disorder," 00:11:36.12\00:11:39.96 and unfortunately, many children 00:11:40.00\00:11:42.30 are placed on a medicine right away. Yeah 00:11:42.33\00:11:44.53 I had a lady that came to me and she didn't want 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.77 to be placed on this medicine and she said, 00:11:47.80\00:11:50.11 "Well, what can I do for my child?" 00:11:50.14\00:11:51.84 I said, "Well just try this for 10 days - No processed 00:11:51.87\00:11:55.34 food or sugar, exercise every day, no media, 00:11:55.38\00:12:00.48 and in 10 days, tell me how that child is doing." 00:12:00.52\00:12:03.65 Ten days, Nick, she came back... she got rid of all that stuff, 00:12:03.69\00:12:08.29 the child was doing fine, settled down, 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.33 put some limits on him, started taking control 00:12:10.36\00:12:13.40 and his brain had improved. 00:12:13.43\00:12:14.90 He is exercising every day... all that change. 00:12:14.93\00:12:17.27 They did not go on the Ritalin and some of those medicines 00:12:17.30\00:12:20.40 which really are stimulants... 00:12:20.44\00:12:22.37 Because it never makes sense... what are the people going to do? 00:12:22.40\00:12:24.14 Take the medicines the rest of their lives? 00:12:24.17\00:12:26.34 Or try to fix the problem? 00:12:26.37\00:12:28.14 Well in this child work, I think it's definitely a 00:12:28.18\00:12:31.48 good place to start and I would start in this route 00:12:31.51\00:12:34.38 before I would jump on the bandwagon 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.32 with all the medicines. 00:12:36.35\00:12:37.69 That's incredible, you know, just a few small lifestyle 00:12:37.72\00:12:40.46 changes is going to change his life forever. 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.39 But I think the place to start on the brain is prayer.
