Wow 00:01:00.59\00:01:04.26 And that might include things like depression, anxiety, 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.63 phobias, fears... you know, all sorts of things 00:01:08.66\00:01:12.67 can fall into this mental health problem. Right 00:01:12.70\00:01:15.50 And, unfortunately, we look at what's out there, 00:01:15.54\00:01:18.67 and the numbers keep going up every year... 00:01:18.71\00:01:20.84 so it concerns me that maybe 00:01:20.88\00:01:23.14 what we're doing is not the right path. 00:01:23.18\00:01:25.98 So we wanted to answer some questions about mental health 00:01:26.01\00:01:29.42 issues about how people could help their brains do better, 00:01:29.45\00:01:32.75 and when I think about how peoples brains can do better, 00:01:32.79\00:01:36.52 I think if we want to do things that make the brain 00:01:36.56\00:01:39.33 work better... now let's think logically about that. 00:01:39.36\00:01:41.80 Well, what logically, do you think would 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.47 help the brain work better, Nick... what would you say? 00:01:45.50\00:01:47.64 Fresh air? YEAH! 00:01:47.67\00:01:49.70 I mean, you know, if you are outside and get fresh air, 00:01:49.74\00:01:55.01 that makes the brain work better because it gets 00:01:55.04\00:01:57.01 better oxygen. Right 00:01:57.05\00:01:58.71 We've seen that brains that don't get good oxygen 00:01:58.75\00:02:01.85 get other chemicals that they're breathing 00:02:01.88\00:02:03.69 that doesn't do well. 00:02:03.72\00:02:05.05 Another thing that our brains need is water! Yeah 00:02:05.09\00:02:08.06 Eighty percent plus of our brain is water. 00:02:08.09\00:02:10.56 If you were dehydrated, if you were walking around 00:02:10.59\00:02:13.19 the desert all day, you would start not working well. 00:02:13.23\00:02:16.77 So that's another thing, movement, exercise, 00:02:16.80\00:02:20.47 getting around that improves the blood supply to our brain. 00:02:20.50\00:02:24.01 Circulation and more oxygen to the brain. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.51 Exactly, more oxygen. 00:02:25.54\00:02:26.88 So we've talked about breathing, we talked about water... 00:02:26.91\00:02:29.64 Nutrition - very important for the brain. 00:02:29.68\00:02:32.11 The brain has to get the substances 00:02:32.15\00:02:33.65 it needs to work well. 00:02:33.68\00:02:35.38 Remember, the original design for our brain wasn't made 00:02:35.42\00:02:39.19 to have lots of processed foods. Right 00:02:39.22\00:02:41.79 Lots of high processed sugar... 00:02:41.82\00:02:44.76 We know that people that take heavy processed sugars, 00:02:44.79\00:02:47.20 they spike chemicals like dopamine in the brain. Right 00:02:47.23\00:02:50.43 There are certain chemicals that we get addicted to 00:02:50.47\00:02:53.00 in the brain - that's not good for the brain. 00:02:53.03\00:02:56.50 All this fat content - we know that fat 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.64 causes inflammation in the brain. 00:02:58.67\00:03:00.84 We know that too much animal products, proteins... 00:03:00.88\00:03:04.15 some people eat foods... for instance - Mr. Chicken 00:03:04.18\00:03:06.92 Let's pick on Mr. Chicken for a while. 00:03:06.95\00:03:08.92 Chickens live thousands and thousands of them 00:03:08.95\00:03:11.72 live next to each other and, you know, to get them 00:03:11.75\00:03:14.26 to grow up quicker, guess what the farmer does? 00:03:14.29\00:03:16.42 He feeds them high protein feed; 00:03:16.46\00:03:20.40 he gives them growth hormones because they live 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.10 next to each other and they might catch infections 00:03:23.13\00:03:25.83 so they give them antibiotics. Right 00:03:25.87\00:03:27.47 In fact, 80% of the world's antibiotics are now 00:03:27.50\00:03:30.61 used on livestock. Really? 00:03:30.64\00:03:32.71 So if Mr. Chicken gets all these chemicals in him, 00:03:32.74\00:03:35.74 and you eat Mr. Chicken, and you absorb all these 00:03:35.78\00:03:38.15 chemicals in you, eventually it could 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.28 get to the brain. That's a lot of stuff we 00:03:40.32\00:03:41.65 weren't made to have in our baskets. Yes! 00:03:41.68\00:03:43.02 And, you know, a lot of stuff and we always hear about 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.59 fish and mercury and all these toxins, 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.72 but there are toxins everywhere that affect the way we think. 00:03:48.76\00:03:52.23 And it used to be, years ago, we didn't hear too much about 00:03:53.23\00:03:55.46 mental health problems, and Alzheimer disease. 00:03:55.50\00:03:59.03 But it's not only the food, I think it's also the media, 00:03:59.17\00:04:02.30 remember, our brains weren't made to have media. 00:04:02.34\00:04:05.41 The average person spends about 8 hours a day in the media. Wow! 00:04:05.44\00:04:08.81 Now, I know that people out there 00:04:08.84\00:04:11.08 don't spend a lot of time on cell phones, computers, 00:04:11.11\00:04:13.78 face books, TV, but other people are! Sure, sure! 00:04:13.82\00:04:17.35 And when it does that... see, our brains were designed 00:04:17.39\00:04:19.89 to be creative and not to be entertained. 00:04:19.92\00:04:23.32 Our brains were designed to serve and not to be selfish. 00:04:23.36\00:04:27.26 Our brains were designed to 00:04:27.30\00:04:28.63 drink water and eat healthy foods? 00:04:28.66\00:04:30.13 And when we've done all these other things, guess what? 00:04:30.17\00:04:32.53 Damage occurs and then when we start having these 00:04:32.57\00:04:36.77 neural pathways that don't do well, 00:04:36.81\00:04:39.01 it's sort of like we... have a hard drive and a soft drive, 00:04:39.04\00:04:42.54 and if we don't put good, new programs in our soft drive, 00:04:42.58\00:04:45.71 things just don't work well. 00:04:45.75\00:04:47.42 And sooner or later, guess what? 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.35 Things begin to malfunction, we even have bad ways 00:04:49.38\00:04:52.39 of thinking that we perpetuate. 00:04:52.42\00:04:53.99 Some people might have guilt and fear and things like that 00:04:54.02\00:04:57.49 that just dominate their lives and they don't know 00:04:57.53\00:04:59.43 how to handle it and our world 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.96 sometimes doesn't have good coping mechanisms... 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.67 And it used to, we used to have lots of relationships, 00:05:04.70\00:05:08.37 we used to be able to talk out problems. That's right! 00:05:08.40\00:05:10.91 People just don't talk as much. 00:05:10.94\00:05:13.38 I just don't think texting does the same job as talking. 00:05:13.41\00:05:18.35 When you can hear somebody, you can see their face, 00:05:18.38\00:05:21.48 you can listen, you can empathize with them, 00:05:21.52\00:05:23.62 it's a little bit different than texting, 00:05:23.65\00:05:25.45 but our world is changing, and then as our world 00:05:25.49\00:05:28.46 is changing, we see more and more brain problems develop, 00:05:28.49\00:05:31.19 and yet, we aren't getting real solutions. 00:05:31.23\00:05:34.70 So one of the real solutions I want to leave with 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.80 everyone today, I think, you know, 00:05:37.83\00:05:39.47 to understand that everything we put in our body 00:05:39.50\00:05:42.17 affects our brains and we want to put in our brains 00:05:42.20\00:05:45.21 the things that God made to put in our brains... 00:05:45.24\00:05:47.88 and part of that, we found out that having a relationship 00:05:47.91\00:05:51.45 with God - worship, that's a great place to start. 00:05:51.48\00:05:55.35 If you remember that text... 00:05:55.38\00:05:56.72 "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, 00:05:56.75\00:05:59.49 I will give you rest." 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.36 "Create in me a new heart," a new brain... 00:06:01.39\00:06:03.73 God has promised to do these things for them. 00:06:03.76\00:06:06.33 And, Dr. Newberg, at the University of Pennsylvania, 00:06:06.36\00:06:09.26 has done studies that show when people do worship, 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.73 the chemical composition of their brain changes. 00:06:11.77\00:06:14.47 That's fantastic! The stress of the body 00:06:14.50\00:06:16.81 goes down, new neurons form, the chemistry of the brain 00:06:16.84\00:06:21.04 changes totally, so there is great truth in those Scriptures, 00:06:21.08\00:06:24.75 and God is the One that can change the way thoughts are... 00:06:24.78\00:06:27.85 give us the power to make changes to do things 00:06:27.88\00:06:29.98 for our brain. 00:06:30.02\00:06:31.35 So, if nothing else today, I think the key to mental health 00:06:31.39\00:06:34.39 is to continue to improve our relationship 00:06:34.42\00:06:37.73 and worship with God and I just wanted to start there. 00:06:37.76\00:06:40.86 I know we've got a lot of questions that we have come in. 00:06:40.90\00:06:44.17 Do you have something you want to add, Nick? 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.53 I was just thinking of the Bible verse... 00:06:45.57\00:06:46.90 "Whatever is pure and whatever is right, 00:06:46.94\00:06:48.27 think on these things." And there's a lot of truth in that. 00:06:48.30\00:06:49.64 We hear a lot of other things in the media, 00:06:49.67\00:06:51.44 but, you know, if we focus on what the Bible says 00:06:51.47\00:06:53.58 and God's love for us, that really can help our brains. 00:06:53.61\00:06:56.54 Yeah, and it concerns me, you know, 00:06:56.58\00:06:57.95 remember, our brains weren't 00:06:57.98\00:06:59.31 designed to see people kill each other. That's right 00:06:59.35\00:07:00.98 And you know, now on TV, we weren't designed 00:07:01.02\00:07:03.15 to know what is going on in every country 00:07:03.18\00:07:04.82 of the world every second. 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.29 Well all of these inputs, they add up, 00:07:06.32\00:07:09.02 and our brain is so very complicated... 00:07:09.06\00:07:12.46 I don't think we can really understand how it works, 00:07:12.49\00:07:15.40 but the general principles that God gave us 00:07:15.43\00:07:18.20 can give us some places to start... 00:07:18.23\00:07:19.90 And that's why when I see a lot of people taking 00:07:19.93\00:07:22.10 medicines that change the chemistry of the brain, 00:07:22.14\00:07:24.17 I wonder - does that make sense? 00:07:24.21\00:07:26.57 Does changing one chemical pathway 00:07:26.61\00:07:28.94 going to fix the problem? Right 00:07:28.98\00:07:30.68 And that's why, there's probably a place for medicines, 00:07:30.71\00:07:33.92 but hopefully, it's only as a bridge until they can do 00:07:33.95\00:07:37.65 things to put healthy things in their mind, 00:07:37.69\00:07:39.82 and get their brain on right. 00:07:39.85\00:07:41.79 I was talking to a counselor not too long ago 00:07:41.82\00:07:45.63 and, you know, people change the brain chemistry by 00:07:45.66\00:07:48.20 something called, "cognitive therapy," 00:07:48.23\00:07:50.53 that's thinking therapy. 00:07:50.57\00:07:51.90 They actually re-train the brain to think. 00:07:51.93\00:07:54.24 And, the way I think of it is, when someone sins, 00:07:54.27\00:07:59.17 God just says, "Well let's throw it in the sea 00:07:59.21\00:08:00.84 and forget about it." That's right 00:08:00.88\00:08:02.21 Unfortunately, we can't forget about it sometimes, 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.45 and our brain has to be taught how to do things, 00:08:04.48\00:08:06.55 but I didn't realize that there are many different 00:08:06.58\00:08:08.62 types of counselors. 00:08:08.65\00:08:10.09 You know, there are secular counselors that come from 00:08:10.12\00:08:13.56 secular basis - "What can I do to make myself better?" 00:08:13.59\00:08:18.83 "The answers are within me," 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.30 that's sort of secular counseling. 00:08:20.33\00:08:22.33 And then there's Christian counseling where they 00:08:22.36\00:08:26.00 talk about Christianity, but don't focus on it. 00:08:26.03\00:08:29.37 And then there's biblical counseling where counselors 00:08:29.40\00:08:32.87 are trained to use the Bible to help people think differently 00:08:32.91\00:08:36.68 and change the chemistry of the brain. 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.35 Well I tend to agree that I think biblical counseling is 00:08:38.38\00:08:41.55 a great way to start and turn it over to God to help change, 00:08:41.58\00:08:44.89 and there are many other physicians that think these ways 00:08:44.92\00:08:47.79 but there are also many physicians that will throw 00:08:47.82\00:08:49.92 all sorts of different things... 00:08:49.96\00:08:51.39 And it gets very hard for people 00:08:51.43\00:08:53.29 that have mental health problems to get help. 00:08:53.33\00:08:55.20 You know, you hear things like, 00:08:55.23\00:08:56.90 attention deficit disorder in kids. Right 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.63 And a lot of people put on depression medicine, 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.00 so we're going to talk about these things today, 00:09:02.04\00:09:04.34 not that we have all the answers but I do know that the 00:09:04.37\00:09:08.31 place to go to find the answers is in our relationship 00:09:08.34\00:09:12.45 with the Ultimate Physician - where we can turn to Him, 00:09:12.48\00:09:15.32 ask Him, petition Him. 00:09:15.35\00:09:16.82 He wants to be part of our life. 00:09:16.85\00:09:18.62 He wants to help change our brains. 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.42 You know, David asked for it to be done. 00:09:20.46\00:09:23.22 He can do these things and He can direct us to the 00:09:23.26\00:09:25.79 places in our lives where we find answers. 00:09:25.83\00:09:29.00 So we've got some questions to answer, 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.77 but we've been on this series, we've been talking about 00:09:30.80\00:09:34.17 our first aid box, right? 00:09:34.20\00:09:36.91 That's right and I know I've heard you say 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.27 a number of times that "serving other people, 00:09:38.31\00:09:40.14 and loving other people - will help your brain as well," right? 00:09:40.18\00:09:43.01 Absolutely! So let's talk about first aid - that's how 00:09:43.04\00:09:44.88 we're going to serve other people maybe if we need to. 00:09:44.91\00:09:46.72 Yeah, today... And so, how are we doing with our 00:09:46.75\00:09:49.48 first aid kit and what are we going to put in there today? 00:09:49.52\00:09:50.85 Well, we've added some different things that people 00:09:50.89\00:09:53.15 can look into to put into their first aid kit to help 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.52 other people in an emergency and today 00:09:56.56\00:09:58.46 I have a substance that I think is very useful. 00:09:58.49\00:10:01.46 This is charcoal and charcoal comes in many different forms. 00:10:01.50\00:10:06.47 It can come in pills, it can come in sort of like 00:10:06.50\00:10:09.94 poultices - that's sort of a cream that you put on things. 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.91 And what charcoal is good at doing is it's good 00:10:12.94\00:10:16.85 absorbing things. Yeah 00:10:16.88\00:10:18.48 It's good at absorbing things. Right 00:10:18.51\00:10:20.38 So, for instance, let's say - when I used to work in the 00:10:20.42\00:10:23.92 emergency room, people used to do overdoses of drugs... 00:10:23.95\00:10:27.86 Well we used to give them charcoal in their stomach 00:10:27.89\00:10:30.23 to help absorb some of the poisons. Okay 00:10:30.26\00:10:33.26 So it pulls it out - so it would not get absorbed 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.26 into the bloodstream. Sure 00:10:35.30\00:10:36.97 Another thing that charcoal has been good on is some 00:10:37.00\00:10:39.27 people have bites and things like that, 00:10:39.30\00:10:41.70 and it has been good sort of as a poultice or a cream 00:10:41.74\00:10:44.61 that people put on the things and it helps pull poisons out, 00:10:44.64\00:10:48.18 and I've see it on some bug bites and things like that 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.85 where people put charcoal and that sort of pulls things out. 00:10:50.88\00:10:54.02 So I think this would be very useful to have 00:10:54.05\00:10:57.92 in a first aid kit as charcoal helps to extract poisons 00:10:57.95\00:11:01.89 especially until they could do something more definitive. 00:11:01.92\00:11:04.86 And some people have used it, I've seen it in people that 00:11:04.89\00:11:08.30 get bad food - you know, food poisoning. Yeah sure 00:11:08.33\00:11:10.90 They take some charcoal and that might help pull out 00:11:10.93\00:11:13.54 some of the bad poisons in food so they don't absorb 00:11:13.57\00:11:16.24 it into the bloodstream and get so sick. 00:11:16.27\00:11:17.87 It keeps the bad stuff from getting into the blood, 00:11:17.91\00:11:19.77 and then to the rest of your body. 00:11:19.81\00:11:21.31 So I think for a first aid kit, this would be something that 00:11:21.34\00:11:24.15 everyone who would talk about making a first aid kit, 00:11:24.18\00:11:26.55 this might be something you would consider 00:11:26.58\00:11:28.08 getting some charcoal that could absorb some of this. 00:11:28.12\00:11:30.42 Now this is something - I don't know if everyone would need, 00:11:30.45\00:11:32.55 but this is aromatic ammonia. 00:11:32.59\00:11:35.22 Have you ever seen smelling salts? 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.89 I've seen a few football games where they might use this. 00:11:37.93\00:11:40.70 This is a smelling salt and it's sort of a respiratory 00:11:40.73\00:11:43.77 stimulant and you use it for people that are sort of foggy, 00:11:43.80\00:11:46.97 passing out and they come back quickly. 00:11:47.04\00:11:51.14 So this is something that I know I've used it a few times 00:11:51.17\00:11:54.98 in people that are fainting, that seem to be going out. 00:11:55.04\00:11:58.81 It seems to sort of stimulate their respiratory system, 00:11:58.85\00:12:01.25 it's sort of "whoa, get them in the game." 00:12:01.28\00:12:04.52 You know, you see it a lot in sporting events, 00:12:04.55\00:12:07.16 especially concussions. 00:12:07.19\00:12:09.02 It helps sort of get things sort of going again, 00:12:09.06\00:12:11.46 but I would still want to, again, for both of these, 00:12:11.49\00:12:14.06 this is just first aid. Right 00:12:14.10\00:12:16.10 This just treats the symptom 00:12:16.13\00:12:17.67 so you can get at the cause of healing. 00:12:17.70\00:12:19.90 It buys you a little bit of time.
