Welcome back... On today's program, 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.96 we're talking with Dr. Marcum about supplements 00:00:03.00\00:00:05.43 and nutritional prescriptions. 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.60 And, we have some questions from viewers just like you 00:00:07.64\00:00:10.67 that have been submitted to our website at 00:00:10.71\00:00:12.41 heartwiseministries.org 00:00:12.44\00:00:14.21 And, Dr. Marcum, our first question for today is: 00:00:14.24\00:00:17.08 "What do you consider a natural remedy?" 00:00:17.11\00:00:19.51 Yeah, and Nick that's a great question 00:00:19.55\00:00:21.92 because there are so many people out there 00:00:21.95\00:00:23.99 that watch the internet or seen this; 00:00:24.02\00:00:26.35 everyone is trying to make money selling supplements, 00:00:26.39\00:00:29.62 this and that, herbs and there's nothing 00:00:29.66\00:00:31.49 wrong with that if needed. Sure! 00:00:31.53\00:00:33.56 But sometimes they're just not needed period. 00:00:33.60\00:00:36.16 So what do I consider a natural remedy? 00:00:36.20\00:00:38.67 Well, you know, things that God gave us 00:00:38.70\00:00:42.07 at the beginning are natural remedies. 00:00:42.10\00:00:44.64 Getting enough rest, that's a natural remedy. 00:00:44.67\00:00:47.28 Drinking water - that's a natural remedy. Right 00:00:47.31\00:00:49.71 Movement - that's a natural remedy. 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.25 Eating foods that have lots of 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.12 fruits and vegetables, nuts and grains, 00:00:54.15\00:00:55.92 those are natural remedies because they have substances 00:00:55.95\00:00:58.52 in those that changes the chemistry of the entire body. 00:00:58.55\00:01:01.09 Being happy - that's a natural remedy. 00:01:01.12\00:01:04.43 Having worship in our life and service, 00:01:04.46\00:01:06.49 those are natural remedies, 00:01:06.53\00:01:07.86 so we were made to do those things. 00:01:07.90\00:01:09.23 Those are positive inputs that help us for the good. 00:01:09.26\00:01:12.80 Now, some people have a deficiency. 00:01:12.83\00:01:16.04 If you have a deficiency in something, 00:01:16.07\00:01:18.04 then you would need to supplement. Sure 00:01:18.07\00:01:20.14 For instance, if you have diarrhea, 00:01:20.18\00:01:21.51 you might run low on magnesium. 00:01:21.54\00:01:23.58 If you don't get out in the sunshine, 00:01:23.61\00:01:25.48 you might run low on vitamin D. 00:01:25.51\00:01:28.95 If you don't eat certain foods, 00:01:28.98\00:01:30.45 you might run low on the B vitamins. 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.39 If you have bleeding, you might run low on iron. 00:01:33.42\00:01:37.56 But as a general, a person that's healthy 00:01:37.59\00:01:39.63 and eats a well-balanced diet, they usually don't have 00:01:39.66\00:01:42.50 a lot of deficiencies... so if they take a lot in, 00:01:42.53\00:01:45.03 they just get more than they need, 00:01:45.07\00:01:47.04 and it's usually not needed. 00:01:47.07\00:01:49.30 So that's what I consider a natural remedy... 00:01:49.34\00:01:51.24 something that God has given us at creation 00:01:51.27\00:01:54.01 to do every single day that changes the chemistry 00:01:54.04\00:01:56.71 of the entire body rather than just not one chemical pathway 00:01:56.75\00:02:00.62 which some supplements and nutrients do, 00:02:00.65\00:02:03.95 you know, something that just changes everything... 00:02:03.99\00:02:05.65 those are more natural remedies. Right 00:02:05.69\00:02:07.26 And so, if you have a deficiency, 00:02:07.29\00:02:08.82 you're going to be experiencing some symptoms 00:02:08.86\00:02:10.63 to let you know something is not right. Right 00:02:10.66\00:02:12.59 So if you feel healthy, you may not need those supplements. 00:02:12.63\00:02:15.03 For instance, someone might have a broken bone, 00:02:15.06\00:02:17.60 and the doctor might discover that they don't have enough 00:02:17.63\00:02:20.14 vitamin D and they need calcium and vitamin D for strong bones. 00:02:20.17\00:02:24.27 Some might have lots of diarrhea 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.47 or might have a funny heart rhythm... 00:02:26.51\00:02:28.21 And during evaluation, we found, "Oh, you're low on magnesium." 00:02:28.24\00:02:31.85 Well, you have a deficiency and then I would 00:02:31.88\00:02:33.65 try to supplement it with things like, 00:02:33.68\00:02:35.22 greens which have magnesium. 00:02:35.25\00:02:37.05 If you're running low on potassium, 00:02:37.09\00:02:38.42 maybe things like bananas and potatoes. 00:02:38.45\00:02:40.42 But they might benefit from boosting their level quickly 00:02:40.46\00:02:43.39 and we have pills that will do that for a short period of time 00:02:43.43\00:02:46.36 so we can make sure they get all the things that they need 00:02:46.39\00:02:48.60 over a long haul. 00:02:48.63\00:02:49.96 Does that make sense, Nick, or did I confuse you? 00:02:50.00\00:02:51.63 No, I think that's some great advice. 00:02:51.67\00:02:53.00 Yeah, natural remedies isn't what everyone thinks... 00:02:53.03\00:02:55.50 "Oh, it's a natural herb or natural this..." 00:02:55.54\00:02:57.37 Not to me, more of a natural remedy is something 00:02:57.41\00:02:59.67 that changes the entire chemistry of the body 00:02:59.71\00:03:01.74 that God gave us... that's a natural remedy! 00:03:01.78\00:03:03.95 I guess a God-given thing that we're not 00:03:03.98\00:03:06.41 paying attention to anymore sometimes. Sure 00:03:06.45\00:03:08.28 It can be really simple. Yes, it's really simple. 00:03:08.32\00:03:10.65 Another viewer asks: "Is it true that the hibiscus 00:03:10.69\00:03:13.86 flower helps lower blood pressure?" 00:03:13.89\00:03:16.49 Yes, well hibiscus is... if you have 00:03:16.52\00:03:19.43 blood pressure problems and they can't figure out 00:03:19.46\00:03:21.63 the reason why - it's sort of a genetic thing, 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.77 yes, hibiscus tea is something that is used naturally 00:03:23.80\00:03:27.50 that lowers blood pressure. 00:03:27.54\00:03:28.87 Is it the leaves from the flower 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.24 or what part is it, do you know? 00:03:30.27\00:03:31.61 It's the chemicals of the flower that lowers it. Okay 00:03:31.64\00:03:34.14 But remember, when people take hibiscus or whatever, 00:03:35.68\00:03:38.41 natural things, you know, I don't see that 00:03:38.45\00:03:41.02 a whole lot different than a medication. 00:03:41.05\00:03:42.88 Because the medicine changes your chemistry, 00:03:42.92\00:03:45.12 hibiscus changes your chemistry, 00:03:45.15\00:03:46.96 it still has chemical compounds in it. 00:03:46.99\00:03:49.59 A lot of the medicines were originally derived from plants. 00:03:49.62\00:03:53.26 So... but the hibiscus is one that's very safe 00:03:53.29\00:03:55.96 that people can use to help lower their blood pressure. 00:03:56.00\00:03:58.77 It's sort of... what I would say - a natural remedy 00:03:58.80\00:04:01.44 if a person does have a disease state. 00:04:01.47\00:04:03.51 Now that's another situation where people would benefit 00:04:03.54\00:04:07.94 from a natural remedy if you have a disease state. 00:04:07.98\00:04:10.38 For instance, if people have plaques of coronary 00:04:10.41\00:04:13.62 artery disease - that's a disease state, 00:04:13.65\00:04:15.15 they would benefit from more greens and less fat. 00:04:15.18\00:04:18.22 Another disease state is if people have diarrhea, 00:04:18.25\00:04:21.16 they would benefit from more magnesium which 00:04:21.19\00:04:23.12 slows the bowel down and replaces electrolytes. 00:04:23.16\00:04:25.76 You see where I'm getting at? Yes 00:04:25.79\00:04:27.66 I keep hearing a theme also about eating more greens. 00:04:27.70\00:04:30.63 Yeah well, greens are very good for things like magnesium. 00:04:30.67\00:04:34.17 It's very good to help take toxins out of the body, 00:04:34.20\00:04:37.17 keep the bowels running good. 00:04:37.21\00:04:39.44 God gave us lots of green things to eat. 00:04:39.47\00:04:41.91 Some of us don't eat as many greens, 00:04:41.94\00:04:43.98 but fruits are good to eat and nuts are good to eat. 00:04:44.01\00:04:46.41 All of these have chemicals in them that help our body, 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.08 and some people have deficiencies and they can 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.69 get the deficiencies just from the food they eat. 00:04:51.72\00:04:54.19 Now, can supplements ever do harm? 00:04:54.22\00:04:56.99 Yes they can... in fact, some people would 00:04:57.03\00:04:59.13 take too many of a substance called, "beta-carotene," 00:04:59.16\00:05:01.76 and some of the other ones, they didn't really need them. 00:05:01.80\00:05:04.03 They took too many and it actually did harm to the body 00:05:04.07\00:05:06.67 because it saturates receptors 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.47 so they can't get the good things and I guess 00:05:08.50\00:05:10.31 too much of any good thing can be bad. 00:05:10.34\00:05:14.14 Too much exercise can be bad. 00:05:14.18\00:05:16.34 You can cause oxidation if you exercise. 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.78 Too much sleep - rest, can be a bad thing. Yeah 00:05:18.81\00:05:21.78 Too much water can even be a bad thing. 00:05:21.82\00:05:24.89 So, yes, you can get too much of a good thing, 00:05:24.92\00:05:27.36 and that's why I think it's about moderation in life. Right 00:05:27.39\00:05:30.69 Once again, a balance of all the right ingredients. 00:05:30.73\00:05:33.23 Now if you are short of a nutrient or substance 00:05:33.26\00:05:36.63 or chemical in your body, then you might want to 00:05:36.67\00:05:39.13 take a supplement until you can bring it up 00:05:39.17\00:05:41.97 to the balance that you need. 00:05:42.00\00:05:43.34 If you have a disease state, you might need something. 00:05:43.37\00:05:45.64 So those are the specific cases when you do need 00:05:45.67\00:05:48.48 supplements and extra things and nutrition. 00:05:48.51\00:05:50.98 Now another viewer asked: "When is Coenzyme Q10 useful?" 00:05:51.01\00:05:56.12 First of all, what is Coenzyme Q10? 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.35 Coenzyme Q10 is a substance that the muscles need 00:05:58.39\00:06:02.59 sometimes to keep it from being sore. 00:06:02.62\00:06:06.03 And, I use Coenzyme Q10 in people that are usually 00:06:06.06\00:06:09.76 on statins that have sore muscles. Okay 00:06:09.80\00:06:12.97 Because there are proteins in muscles that sometimes 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.20 can be hurt by a statin and if they have really sore muscles, 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.91 Coenzyme Q10 can also help muscles. 00:06:17.94\00:06:21.04 So some people that have a deficiency in certain proteins, 00:06:21.08\00:06:24.05 Coenzyme Q10 might help it because the deficiency 00:06:24.08\00:06:26.88 could be generated by medicines they are taking 00:06:26.92\00:06:30.55 or other different problems. 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.32 Now, other things that are good for muscles 00:06:32.35\00:06:34.52 besides Coenzyme Q10 is muscles love water. 00:06:34.56\00:06:38.49 Muscles loves magnesium and calcium and potassium, 00:06:38.53\00:06:42.00 and you get all those if you eat 3 to 5 fresh fruits 00:06:42.03\00:06:45.07 and vegetables a day - so muscles like those things too. 00:06:45.10\00:06:48.40 But in people that have deficiencies in certain 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.71 enzyme systems, Coenzyme Q10 might help bring that 00:06:50.74\00:06:53.78 enzyme system up - especially I use it specifically 00:06:53.81\00:06:57.15 in people that have soreness on statins that we don't want to 00:06:57.18\00:07:00.68 stop the statin because we really need to keep it going 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.55 in people that have sore muscles that sometimes helps them a lot. 00:07:03.59\00:07:07.06 So where does Coenzyme Q10 come from? 00:07:07.09\00:07:09.79 I don't know... It's not found in a natural 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.89 diet or plant resources? You can get it in your diet, 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.46 but sometimes in deficiency, you don't get the numbers 00:07:14.50\00:07:16.77 that you need to be at, but it's a coenzyme. 00:07:16.80\00:07:18.87 It's a chemical that helps enzymatic reactions, 00:07:18.90\00:07:21.74 specifically in proteins in the body. 00:07:21.77\00:07:24.47 But I don't know, specifically, what foods have it. Okay 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.61 You know, we had another question come in: 00:07:27.64\00:07:29.81 "What are some natural sleep aids?" 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.75 I know, once in a while, I have a hard time getting to sleep 00:07:31.78\00:07:33.78 because maybe I'm thinking about stuff, 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.15 so if I can just relax my mind, and just try and not focus on 00:07:35.18\00:07:38.92 the day's work or whatever I've been worrying about all day, 00:07:38.95\00:07:41.69 that helps, but what are some natural sleep aids? 00:07:41.72\00:07:43.46 Well, some of the natural remedies to help people 00:07:43.49\00:07:45.79 sleep is exercise because it gets people tired; 00:07:45.83\00:07:49.46 it makes chemicals called "endorphins" that help 00:07:49.50\00:07:51.63 relax you - everyone feels relaxed after this, 00:07:51.67\00:07:53.74 so that's one natural remedy that helps you sleep. 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.10 Of course avoiding stimulants... 00:07:56.14\00:07:58.47 You know, too many stimulants can do that. 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.88 There are foods that help like bananas - that helps. 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.98 Bananas and kiwi have chemicals in it that get turned to 00:08:04.01\00:08:08.92 serotonin in the brain which helps people relax. 00:08:08.95\00:08:12.65 So any of those things... anything that decreases the 00:08:12.69\00:08:16.29 process called oxidation could help us rest better. Right 00:08:16.32\00:08:20.00 So things that are oxidizing in our body are things that 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.56 cause inflammation... people that eat lots of fats, 00:08:22.60\00:08:26.10 lots of proteins, lots of animal that causes inflammation 00:08:26.13\00:08:29.50 in the body that hurts our ability to rest and relax. 00:08:29.54\00:08:32.77 So anything that puts also stress on the body, 00:08:32.81\00:08:35.51 helps keep us awake. 00:08:35.54\00:08:36.88 For instance, if you watch TV at night, 00:08:36.91\00:08:38.71 too much light at night... that might put stressors 00:08:38.75\00:08:42.18 in the body that also stimulates the body not 00:08:42.22\00:08:45.45 to produce the medicines, the chemicals 00:08:45.49\00:08:47.99 that we need to sleep better. 00:08:48.02\00:08:49.42 So those are some simple things to do that might help 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.76 people rest better. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.73 Do you ever have a hard time, yourself, getting to sleep? 00:08:53.76\00:08:55.86 No, I never do - I can hit that thing and I'm 00:08:55.90\00:08:59.77 asleep in no time at all. 00:08:59.80\00:09:01.80 Sometimes if my mind is really busy, Nick, 00:09:01.84\00:09:05.64 working on a project that I'm really working on, 00:09:05.67\00:09:08.04 sometimes my mind works on it as I'm asleep, 00:09:08.08\00:09:10.65 and I don't sleep as deep, but I don't have 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.88 too much problems going to sleep, 00:09:12.91\00:09:14.25 but a lot of people do, and a lot of people 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.69 go for these medications that help them sleep. 00:09:16.72\00:09:19.32 But unfortunately, these medicines don't solve the 00:09:19.35\00:09:21.79 problem - they just treat the symptom. 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.99 and all the medicines have been shown to hurt 00:09:24.03\00:09:26.23 the cognitive ability... you're not as smart, 00:09:26.26\00:09:28.80 and you're not as safe like driving. 00:09:28.83\00:09:30.70 So I don't really, if we can find out other ways to 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.64 help people rest and sleep better, 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.34 it's always better than taking a sleeping pill. That's right! 00:09:35.37\00:09:38.61 You know, I have a 6-month-old son and we have found 00:09:38.64\00:09:41.18 that whenever we get him lots of fresh air during the day, 00:09:41.21\00:09:43.41 he seems to sleep a little bit better at night, 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.05 so exercise, fresh air, that's really good for us. 00:09:45.08\00:09:47.42 All those things help out a lot. 00:09:47.45\00:09:48.78 So those are natural remedies that can help us sleep better. 00:09:48.82\00:09:52.45 Now we've got a question about aging, someone asks: 00:09:52.49\00:09:54.79 "How do foods help with aging?" 00:09:54.82\00:09:57.26 Like what foods might be useful? 00:09:57.29\00:09:58.79 Yeah, aging - you've heard this word called "oxidation." Yeah 00:09:58.83\00:10:03.47 That's like the body is rusting! 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.30 So foods that cause oxidation are bad. 00:10:06.33\00:10:09.80 They cause aging, they change our genetics, 00:10:09.84\00:10:12.27 they make us get older quicker. 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.51 Things that cause antioxidants prevent these free radicals 00:10:14.54\00:10:19.81 performing that slows down the aging process. 00:10:19.85\00:10:22.42 That protects - there is a part of the chromosome 00:10:22.45\00:10:25.72 called the "telomere," it helps with that. 00:10:25.75\00:10:27.99 So basically for aging, we want to take 00:10:28.02\00:10:30.29 more antioxidants and less oxidants. 00:10:30.33\00:10:33.76 So what are foods that cause oxidation? 00:10:33.80\00:10:36.26 Well, unfortunately, those are things that come from animals, 00:10:36.30\00:10:40.44 the cheese, dairy, lots of processed foods. 00:10:40.47\00:10:44.97 That stimulates the process called "oxidation" in the body, 00:10:45.01\00:10:49.14 turns on all these bad chemicals that sort of 00:10:49.18\00:10:52.08 makes us more acidic - oxidizes. 00:10:52.11\00:10:55.18 But when we take the antioxidants, 00:10:55.22\00:10:57.29 that sort of turns off the oxidation process. 00:10:57.32\00:11:00.29 So antioxidants not only helps aging, 00:11:00.32\00:11:03.43 but it helps inflammation in the body, 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.46 it helps the genetics of the body. 00:11:05.49\00:11:07.46 Now what are foods that have antioxidants in them? 00:11:07.50\00:11:09.46 Yeah, what are some sources of antioxidants? 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.30 Blueberries - one of the best! 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.10 All the berries are good antioxidants. 00:11:13.13\00:11:15.50 Goji berries, but basically the fruits, vegetables, nuts, 00:11:15.54\00:11:19.47 mainly fruits and vegetables have lots of antioxidants. Right 00:11:19.51\00:11:23.45 Now some people that are especially low in antioxidants, 00:11:23.48\00:11:26.61 really focus on the berries, those type of things. 00:11:26.65\00:11:30.89 A handful of berries every now and then really helps 00:11:30.92\00:11:33.19 bring up the oxidation to counteract all these 00:11:33.22\00:11:36.36 antioxidants we're getting. Oh okay 00:11:36.39\00:11:38.43 So I tell people, if they have to have something that 00:11:38.46\00:11:42.16 oxidizes it - you know, foods that they 00:11:42.20\00:11:44.47 have to eat some bad food occasionally 00:11:44.50\00:11:46.27 for whatever reason... 00:11:46.30\00:11:47.70 Well chase it with some greens which helps the body 00:11:47.74\00:11:50.97 move it through quicker; 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.67 help it through some magnesium that will help 00:11:52.71\00:11:54.74 the bowels move quicker; 00:11:54.78\00:11:56.24 chase it with some antioxidants that help balance 00:11:56.28\00:11:59.58 some of the bad effects of the food. 00:11:59.61\00:12:01.48 So antioxidants are very important in the aging process, 00:12:01.52\00:12:05.52 very important in inflammation and keeping the blood vessels, 00:12:05.55\00:12:09.39 has lots of good things that help the entire body. 00:12:09.42\00:12:11.86 So eat more blueberries, more antioxidants... 00:12:11.89\00:12:15.36 More fruit, more vegetables, basically the things that 00:12:15.40\00:12:17.63 we've talked about all along has all those good things 00:12:17.67\00:12:20.24 and less of the things that cause oxidation... 00:12:20.27\00:12:22.77 less of the fat, less of the cheese, less of the meat, 00:12:22.80\00:12:25.67 less of the processed foods. 00:12:25.71\00:12:27.41 And unfortunately, guess what's happened? 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.08 In our world, we're eating more of the bad stuff, 00:12:29.11\00:12:31.71 so we're aging quicker, we're turning on our genetics, 00:12:31.75\00:12:34.95 we're causing all these inflammatory things in our body 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.82 which causes all these health problems 00:12:37.85\00:12:39.42 and sooner or later turn on symptoms, 00:12:39.45\00:12:41.22 and rather get at the cause, well they say, 00:12:41.26\00:12:43.86 "Well let me get rid of the oxidation things in my life," 00:12:43.89\00:12:46.63 rather than get at the cause, we're treating the symptom. 00:12:46.66\00:12:50.07 So we're not really fixing the problem, 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.07 and sometimes when we treat symptoms, 00:12:52.10\00:12:54.10 we can make things worse. Right, right 00:12:54.14\00:12:56.47 I think that's some great advice. 00:12:56.50\00:12:58.34 We've got another question here, somebody asks: 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.74 "Is hawthorn useful for hearts?" 00:13:00.78\00:13:03.65 You're a cardiologist, so you should be know. 00:13:03.68\00:13:05.35 Yeah and we get a lot of questions about herbs 00:13:05.38\00:13:08.38 and supplements and I'm not an herbologist, 00:13:08.42\00:13:12.49 but a lot of doctors that are good at herbs are called 00:13:12.52\00:13:15.16 "naturopaths," and they are very good because they 00:13:15.19\00:13:17.56 use these every day similar to how I would use medicines. 00:13:17.59\00:13:22.16 And there are some herbs out there that have been studied 00:13:22.20\00:13:25.43 very well and that are very useful for certain conditions. 00:13:25.47\00:13:29.00 Now the herbs, if you're taking an herb, you have to make 00:13:29.04\00:13:32.14 sure it doesn't interact with something else you might be 00:13:32.17\00:13:34.31 taking in the body. Okay 00:13:34.34\00:13:36.01 A lot of herbs interact with blood thinners and antibiotics 00:13:36.04\00:13:39.41 and things to make them less or more effective... 00:13:39.45\00:13:41.78 So you have to talk to your doctor about that, 00:13:41.82\00:13:43.75 and you have to get someone that really knows 00:13:43.79\00:13:45.69 the amount that you should take because we're 00:13:45.72\00:13:47.89 assuming we're taking an herb or a supplement 00:13:47.92\00:13:50.19 for either a deficiency or a disease state. Yeah, right 00:13:50.23\00:13:54.00 For in hawthorn, the disease state is the heart is not as 00:13:54.03\00:13:57.93 strong as it needs to be. 00:13:57.97\00:13:59.83 And this hawthorn helps the heart through chemicals 00:13:59.87\00:14:05.51 called "glycosides" makes the heart beat stronger. 00:14:05.54\00:14:09.08 So this is one - hawthorn that actually will help 00:14:09.11\00:14:12.01 the heart beat stronger. 00:14:12.05\00:14:13.52 It's used very often in Europe to make the heart beat stronger, 00:14:13.55\00:14:17.05 similar to a medicine we use here called, "digoxin." 00:14:17.09\00:14:20.06 Another herb that's used on the cardiovascular system 00:14:20.09\00:14:23.99 that's been proven in scientific studies, 00:14:24.03\00:14:26.53 double-blinded studies that shows they work 00:14:26.56\00:14:29.00 is one called "horse chestnut," 00:14:29.03\00:14:31.33 and some people with vein problems and vascular problems 00:14:31.37\00:14:34.77 can take horse chestnut because there are chemicals 00:14:34.80\00:14:37.21 in horse chestnut - it helps the veins do better. 00:14:37.24\00:14:43.48 So there are many herbs out there that do work 00:14:43.51\00:14:46.48 and a good naturopath could help guide you through that. 00:14:46.51\00:14:51.65 There's an "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine" 00:14:51.69\00:14:54.19 that can help if you want to learn more, 00:14:54.22\00:14:55.69 but I see these herbs and supplements - the place for 00:14:55.72\00:14:58.99 them is to help get over disease state, 00:14:59.03\00:15:01.66 or if you're running low on something - then natural. 00:15:01.70\00:15:04.47 But most people can get what they need in the foods 00:15:04.50\00:15:07.24 and supplements that they take from what God gave us. 00:15:07.27\00:15:10.64 They don't need that extra boost. 00:15:10.67\00:15:12.64 So, other than supplements, 00:15:12.67\00:15:14.01 how about the vitamins, let's talk about that for a minute, 00:15:14.04\00:15:15.64 what are some needed vitamins? 00:15:15.68\00:15:17.01 Yeah, the most common one I see is people that don't 00:15:17.05\00:15:20.12 go out in the sun 30 minutes, 3 times a day, 00:15:20.15\00:15:22.92 need vitamin D. 00:15:22.95\00:15:24.29 Vitamin D is really a pro-hormone. 00:15:24.32\00:15:26.92 It helps the bone, it helps the brain. 00:15:26.96\00:15:28.99 Vitamin D is needed in every cell of the body. 00:15:29.02\00:15:31.69 So if you have vitamin D 00:15:31.73\00:15:33.06 deficiency, you're not going to feel good. 00:15:33.09\00:15:34.63 It helps the blood pressure, it helps the vessels, 00:15:34.66\00:15:36.77 helps you fight depression, helps the bones, 00:15:36.80\00:15:39.53 many different things. 00:15:39.57\00:15:40.90 Another one that's very important is "thyroid." 00:15:40.94\00:15:43.57 Now even though that's not a nutrient, 00:15:43.61\00:15:45.47 Every cell in the body needs thyroid hormone. Right 00:15:45.51\00:15:48.64 So will have your thyroid checked; 00:15:48.68\00:15:50.01 sometimes you run low on that. 00:15:50.05\00:15:51.38 We already talked about the B6 and B12, 00:15:51.41\00:15:53.95 especially for people that eat a whole food plant-based diet, 00:15:53.98\00:15:56.79 and don't take any things like fortified soy, fortified... 00:15:56.82\00:16:02.02 You know there are certain milks are fortified with B vitamins. 00:16:02.06\00:16:04.86 Some people don't take cereals and grains that have that... 00:16:04.89\00:16:08.36 They might need a supplement if they stay away 00:16:08.40\00:16:10.80 from all of that fortification. 00:16:10.83\00:16:12.97 Now if somebody wants to learn more about where they can get 00:16:13.00\00:16:15.34 information on supplements and nutritional prescription, 00:16:15.37\00:16:17.64 where would you direct them? 00:16:17.67\00:16:19.01 There's an "Encyclopedia of Supplements," 00:16:19.04\00:16:22.04 they can get that on the website, 00:16:22.08\00:16:24.31 and could check with a naturopath that 00:16:24.35\00:16:26.61 might be able to help you, 00:16:26.65\00:16:27.98 or some doctors have some basic knowledge. 00:16:28.02\00:16:29.85 I have some basic knowledge, but I try to get specialized 00:16:29.88\00:16:33.12 help, but remember - I only use it if a person 00:16:33.15\00:16:35.52 is in a diseased state or has 00:16:35.56\00:16:37.23 a deficiency and I try to use the things that God gave us 00:16:37.26\00:16:40.86 first, and then if that doesn't work and we have to add some, 00:16:40.90\00:16:44.10 then I want to do it under a very supervised situation, 00:16:44.13\00:16:46.97 on someone that uses these and knows the proper amount, 00:16:47.00\00:16:49.67 and the interactions. 00:16:49.70\00:16:51.17 So everything we put in either has a benefit or a harm. 00:16:51.21\00:16:54.71 Well thank you, Dr. Marcum, for sharing with us about 00:16:54.74\00:16:56.81 this important topic. 00:16:56.85\00:16:58.25 Stay right there, we're going to be back in just a moment. 00:16:58.28\00:17:00.08 Let's pray together... 00:17:06.29\00:17:07.62 Father, Thank You for helping us to learn about our 00:17:07.66\00:17:10.43 bodies today, Father, and continue to guide us. 00:17:10.46\00:17:13.40 And thank You so much for Your everlasting love. 00:17:13.43\00:17:18.00
