Are you interested in foods that change your body 00:00:16.88\00:00:19.58 and can dramatically improve your health? 00:00:19.61\00:00:21.75 You won't want to miss today's program - stay right there. 00:00:21.78\00:00:24.39 I'm Dr. James Marcum, are you interested in 00:00:25.25\00:00:28.52 discovering the reason why? 00:00:28.56\00:00:30.66 Do you want solutions to your health care problem? 00:00:30.69\00:00:33.36 Are you tired of taking medications? 00:00:33.40\00:00:36.16 Well, you're about to be given "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:36.20\00:00:40.67 Hippocrates said, "Let food by thy medicine." 00:00:41.97\00:00:45.64 When it comes to supplements 00:00:45.67\00:00:47.01 and nutritional prescriptions, Dr. Marcum, 00:00:47.04\00:00:49.44 how does that apply? 00:00:49.48\00:00:50.88 Well that's great, Nick, because I get a lot of questions 00:00:50.91\00:00:53.95 at our website at heartwiseministries.org 00:00:53.98\00:00:56.79 regarding nutrients and supplements. Right 00:00:56.82\00:00:59.75 It's probably the most common thing I hear about, 00:00:59.79\00:01:02.69 and everyone wants to take 00:01:02.72\00:01:04.29 something natural, a natural remedy... 00:01:04.33\00:01:06.23 You know, is there some type of herb, 00:01:06.26\00:01:08.43 some type of extra vitamin that I take, 00:01:08.46\00:01:10.60 and I wanted to address these things today, 00:01:10.63\00:01:12.77 and give a balanced perspective. 00:01:12.80\00:01:14.17 There's a place for taking supplements and nutritional aids 00:01:14.20\00:01:18.21 but usually it's in a disease state. Okay 00:01:18.24\00:01:21.84 For instance, if you were floating around in the sea, 00:01:21.88\00:01:24.25 and didn't have vitamin C, you know you've heard of 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.95 these diseases like scurvy and pellagra and things like that. 00:01:26.98\00:01:30.55 Those are big deficiencies. 00:01:30.59\00:01:32.69 If you're iron-deficient, you need iron. 00:01:32.72\00:01:35.72 So if you're deficient in a substance, 00:01:35.76\00:01:37.79 then you might need to take supplements... 00:01:37.83\00:01:39.76 But most people, if they eat a well-balanced diet 00:01:39.79\00:01:43.23 with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, 00:01:43.26\00:01:46.74 hydrate themselves well with water, 00:01:46.77\00:01:49.20 they don't need to take many supplements 00:01:49.24\00:01:51.61 because God has given us everything that we need 00:01:51.64\00:01:54.14 to keep our body running pretty smooth. 00:01:54.18\00:01:56.91 Now some people I've noticed that are on a whole food 00:01:56.95\00:01:59.51 plant-based diet, do need a little bit of supplements 00:01:59.55\00:02:03.08 with the B vitamins, B6 and B12. Why is that? 00:02:03.12\00:02:06.29 Because they don't get it in the food sources they eat. 00:02:06.32\00:02:09.52 But your doctor can check you for that 00:02:09.56\00:02:11.73 or you can just take a... I just take a B6 or B12 00:02:11.76\00:02:14.56 occasionally and I have plenty of high enough levels. 00:02:14.60\00:02:18.33 So where does B6 and B12... where do these come from? 00:02:18.37\00:02:21.17 Well, it's in animals, but it predominantly comes from 00:02:21.20\00:02:25.07 the soil - it comes from that, but nowadays, our soil is not 00:02:25.11\00:02:28.98 as healthy as it used to be, and you know of course, 00:02:29.01\00:02:31.88 animal products have that, but a lot of people don't 00:02:31.91\00:02:34.18 want to take that in because of the bad that they get with it, 00:02:34.22\00:02:37.19 so they can take supplements and a lot of the 00:02:37.22\00:02:39.02 foods we eat, the soy products, the different types of 00:02:39.05\00:02:42.59 you know, are supplemented with supplements as well... 00:02:42.62\00:02:45.96 So they don't even have to take a pill, 00:02:45.99\00:02:47.33 you get it as some of the food 00:02:47.36\00:02:48.83 we eat have these supplements in them. 00:02:48.86\00:02:50.43 Now I see a lot of marketing about this supplement 00:02:50.47\00:02:52.83 or that supplement... if I'm young and healthy, 00:02:52.87\00:02:55.24 and I don't feel any symptoms, I'm not feeling any real needs, 00:02:55.27\00:02:59.07 should I buy into the idea that maybe I need a 00:02:59.11\00:03:01.14 a supplement or should I talk to my doctor? 00:03:01.18\00:03:02.64 If you have a deficiency, if you have a disease state, 00:03:02.68\00:03:05.71 you might need a supplement. Okay 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.62 But if you're eating a whole food diet, plant-based diet, 00:03:07.65\00:03:11.42 maybe get a little B6 and B12, you're getting everything 00:03:11.45\00:03:14.52 you need and you don't have a deficiency. Okay 00:03:14.56\00:03:16.93 Now if you have a disease state like you have a GI bleed, 00:03:16.96\00:03:20.70 for instance, then you'll lose extra iron, 00:03:20.73\00:03:22.96 then you might need supplemental iron in your body. 00:03:23.00\00:03:25.90 If you have certain problems with a gland, 00:03:25.93\00:03:28.54 then you might be short on something. 00:03:28.57\00:03:30.27 So there are some cases where you do need some things. 00:03:30.31\00:03:33.41 If you don't eat fruits and vegetables, 00:03:33.44\00:03:35.38 you might need a supplement if you don't take those things in 00:03:35.41\00:03:38.15 because you might be short on a nutrient and those people 00:03:38.18\00:03:42.15 do need supplements, but I look at it this way... 00:03:42.18\00:03:44.39 Everything that we put in our body has a chemical reaction, 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.99 and the supplements and the herbs have chemical reactions 00:03:48.02\00:03:50.89 just like other things too. Sure, yeah! 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.19 And sometimes we take in too much of them and it 00:03:53.23\00:03:56.36 saturates our enzyme systems. 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.60 Now what happens... can you take 00:03:58.63\00:03:59.97 too much vitamin C, what happens? 00:04:00.00\00:04:01.34 Well, if you take too much of any good thing, 00:04:01.37\00:04:03.47 most of the time, the body handles it. Okay 00:04:03.51\00:04:05.77 But it's like - if you have an orchestra with lots of 00:04:05.81\00:04:08.64 French horns... let's say you have 50 French horns... 00:04:08.68\00:04:11.95 French horns are great, but if you have too many 00:04:11.98\00:04:14.02 French horns, you can't hear the trumpets. 00:04:14.05\00:04:15.98 Sometimes it blocks the receptors 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.12 when other needed nutrients can't get in. 00:04:18.15\00:04:20.82 So you want to balance... Yes 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.49 Not just a whole lot of one instrument but a balance. 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.53 And that's what we want in life, we want a balance. 00:04:25.56\00:04:28.26 And you know, there's a place for medicines... 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.70 you know, when we need medicines mainly to get us 00:04:30.73\00:04:33.77 over an acute crisis. 00:04:33.80\00:04:35.84 There's a place for nutrition, but more than that... 00:04:35.87\00:04:41.21 what I like to think is, there's a place for God 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.78 leading us in the learning about our bodies 00:04:43.81\00:04:45.98 because we're our best physicians. Right 00:04:46.01\00:04:48.25 So we have a lot of questions that we're going to get to 00:04:48.28\00:04:50.72 in a minute about this, but before that... 00:04:50.75\00:04:52.42 you know, we've been talking about our first aid kits. 00:04:52.45\00:04:55.32 So let's talk about another thing that our viewers 00:04:55.36\00:04:58.03 can add to their first aid kit to help them be healthier. 00:04:58.06\00:05:01.56 So, we're building our first aid kit at home... 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.83 what are some things that we're going to put in there today? 00:05:03.87\00:05:06.77 Well today, we're going to talk about "bandages." Okay 00:05:06.80\00:05:10.54 Bandages help if you're having a situation where 00:05:10.57\00:05:14.28 you're bleeding or you're wounded or the tissue 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.88 has been damaged. 00:05:16.91\00:05:18.61 I don't know if you have ever seen it, 00:05:18.65\00:05:20.15 but we have all sorts of bandages to help, 00:05:20.18\00:05:21.98 not only keep the area clean so it doesn't get infected, 00:05:22.02\00:05:25.35 but also to keep, if you're losing lots of blood, 00:05:25.39\00:05:28.66 to help with that situation. 00:05:28.69\00:05:30.83 Let's say that you're in a first aid situation, 00:05:30.86\00:05:34.06 and someone is losing a lot of blood... 00:05:34.10\00:05:37.37 what should you do? 00:05:37.40\00:05:38.73 You need to stop the bleeding first, right? 00:05:38.77\00:05:40.57 And a lot of people, I would recommend putting a glove on, 00:05:40.60\00:05:43.74 and we want to put a glove on your hand so a first aid kit 00:05:43.77\00:05:47.08 should have some gloves. Right 00:05:47.11\00:05:48.48 They don't necessarily have to be sterile, 00:05:48.51\00:05:50.55 but some gloves that will help protect you and then 00:05:50.58\00:05:53.85 depending on how much bleeding is, 00:05:53.88\00:05:55.82 we want to stop the bleeding. 00:05:55.85\00:05:57.29 But a general principle to stop bleeding 00:05:57.32\00:05:59.85 we want to put pressure on it. Okay 00:05:59.89\00:06:02.19 And of course, the more bleeding, 00:06:02.22\00:06:03.99 the more pressure you need. Right 00:06:04.03\00:06:06.23 And if you usually put pressure hard enough for a prolonged 00:06:06.26\00:06:09.16 period of time, the body will bring in clotting factors, 00:06:09.20\00:06:13.64 it will stop the bleeding on its own. 00:06:13.67\00:06:15.80 Now I've had arteries that were completely severed 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.47 sometimes that I've had o put tons of pressure on 00:06:18.51\00:06:21.71 to stop the bleeding. I imagine... 00:06:21.74\00:06:23.24 Of course we just stop the bleeding until we can get 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.78 a surgeon or someone that can ligate that or fix the problem. 00:06:25.81\00:06:29.18 So if it's severe bleeding, and you've seen people 00:06:29.22\00:06:31.69 that had a bullet wound or gunshot wound 00:06:31.72\00:06:34.02 where they put a lot of pressure. 00:06:34.06\00:06:35.59 But a lot of pressure can be lifesaving if they can stop 00:06:35.62\00:06:38.56 that bleeding until help arrives and keep the blood 00:06:38.59\00:06:41.53 in the intravascular space where it can carry oxygen around. 00:06:41.56\00:06:45.60 Keep the blood pressure up, we need pressure 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.74 throughout the body to take oxygen and nutrients. 00:06:47.77\00:06:50.51 So putting pressure and it depends on how much you need. 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.24 Now some people don't need much at all, 00:06:53.27\00:06:55.04 and here are just some little band aids. 00:06:55.08\00:06:56.64 Every first aid kit should have some band aids too. 00:06:56.68\00:06:59.51 This is a butterfly band aid to help keep a wound closed 00:06:59.55\00:07:03.79 so it doesn't bleed very much. 00:07:03.82\00:07:06.09 Then I've thrown in my kit, I have some tape. 00:07:06.12\00:07:10.66 Well, why would tape be beneficial? 00:07:10.69\00:07:13.19 Well let's say you hold pressure on a wound and then later on 00:07:13.23\00:07:17.23 you have to put a bigger bandage on it 00:07:17.27\00:07:21.17 and you might wan to wrap the tape around it 00:07:21.20\00:07:24.21 many times to help put the pressure on the wound 00:07:24.24\00:07:27.28 so the wound doesn't continue to bruise. 00:07:27.31\00:07:30.11 So a bandage will help stop bleeding, 00:07:30.15\00:07:32.71 but you have other parts of your body that might not 00:07:32.75\00:07:34.68 be bleeding that also might help with the bandage... 00:07:34.72\00:07:37.72 And I've had some other things down here... 00:07:37.75\00:07:40.46 What if you have something in your foot? 00:07:40.49\00:07:43.83 Very important - these are if you have a blister, 00:07:43.86\00:07:48.80 a corn or something on your foot that causes a lot... 00:07:48.83\00:07:51.70 you can put this over it, it's not bleeding, 00:07:51.73\00:07:54.44 but it can help protect it against rubbing and pain 00:07:54.47\00:07:57.47 that will keep you from walking 00:07:57.51\00:07:58.87 until it can give it some time to heal. 00:07:58.91\00:08:00.98 Probably keeps a little protection 00:08:01.01\00:08:02.64 from infection as well. 00:08:02.68\00:08:04.01 Yes, that will help with that. Okay 00:08:04.05\00:08:06.28 There's lots of other little things I've thrown in here. 00:08:06.31\00:08:09.08 This is a bigger triangular bandage that we can 00:08:09.12\00:08:13.76 put and wrap it if someone has a big damage to the skin 00:08:13.79\00:08:16.99 to help put pressure on it, mainly to help the bleeding 00:08:17.03\00:08:19.73 stop until you can get some permanent help. 00:08:19.76\00:08:22.30 So I think every first aid kit needs to have 00:08:22.33\00:08:25.03 an assortment of bandages. 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.60 Bandages in case you have big bleeding 00:08:26.63\00:08:30.07 where you put pressure on until you stop it, 00:08:30.11\00:08:32.21 then you wrap it - you know some tape around it until it stops. 00:08:32.24\00:08:35.11 Lesser bleeding problems might can just get by with 00:08:35.14\00:08:38.81 band aids and then also this very important too... 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.78 we have some sterile things that we can add to it. 00:08:41.82\00:08:45.49 And you know if you have to put some things 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.46 around the bandage, you can have some Betadine, 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.72 some alcohol to help keep it clean as well. 00:08:49.76\00:08:52.59 That's something that's very useful for a wound. 00:08:52.63\00:08:55.03 And then until you can get to a situation 00:08:55.06\00:08:57.00 where you can really keep it clean. 00:08:57.03\00:08:58.37 So for everyone's first aid kit today... Nick, I think it's 00:08:58.40\00:09:02.40 very valuable to add some type of bandage to that 00:09:02.44\00:09:06.81 to cover every type of scenario in case you're 00:09:06.84\00:09:09.41 out far away from home, you can have this done 00:09:09.44\00:09:12.61 until you can see a provider. 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.02 Sometimes it's so little 00:09:14.05\00:09:15.38 that you don't even have to see anybody. 00:09:15.42\00:09:16.75 Right, yeah - that's some great advice, 00:09:16.79\00:09:18.12 and you know, it's important just to have a glove available, 00:09:18.15\00:09:20.56 don't be afraid of people, do the best to 00:09:20.59\00:09:23.36 protect yourself, but use whatever gloves you have 00:09:23.39\00:09:25.29 available to help take care of people. 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.93 I see some people, you know, kids that fall down 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.93 and they are bleeding and they really need a stitch 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.73 that you have to put a bandage on it and hold pressure 00:09:31.77\00:09:33.80 until they can get a stitch or something like that. 00:09:33.84\00:09:35.94 You don't want them to have blood everywhere, 00:09:35.97\00:09:37.97 and, of course, that's not a good situation. 00:09:38.01\00:09:40.24 So every first aid kit needs an assortment of bandages. 00:09:40.28\00:09:43.65 Don't forget to put pressure on the wound if it's bleeding 00:09:43.68\00:09:46.95 until the bleeding stops or you can get 00:09:46.98\00:09:48.68 further help - very important! 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.05 That's some great advice and I'm going to add some more 00:09:50.09\00:09:51.85 bandages to my first aid kit at home. More bandages! 00:09:51.89\00:09:53.86 All right, we're going to be right back in just a moment 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.62 with some more questions from our website 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.26 heartwiseministries.org 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.20 And today, we're talking about supplements 00:10:00.23\00:10:02.33 and nutritional treatments, 00:10:02.36\00:10:03.77 so we'll be back in just a moment. 00:10:03.80\00:10:05.27
