Welcome back! Before the break we were 00:00:03.43\00:00:05.53 talking about first aid kits 00:00:05.57\00:00:06.90 and how we can help care for others, our family, 00:00:06.94\00:00:09.14 and our friends, and we were talking about EpiPens, 00:00:09.17\00:00:11.51 And Dr. Marcum, is there anything else we need to know 00:00:11.54\00:00:13.98 about the proper use of EpiPen. 00:00:14.01\00:00:15.81 Well, you know, one of the things I think is very useful 00:00:15.84\00:00:18.41 for high risk people. 00:00:18.45\00:00:19.78 So high risk people - who would that be? 00:00:19.81\00:00:21.72 Peanut allergies, bee allergies, that kind of thing; 00:00:21.75\00:00:24.72 or people - maybe a teacher, maybe at a school, 00:00:24.75\00:00:27.22 maybe a school nurse. 00:00:27.26\00:00:28.76 One of the things is that does require a doctor's prescription. 00:00:28.79\00:00:33.03 One of the things we notice, it doesn't take a whole lot of 00:00:33.06\00:00:35.83 training, as you saw, it's not that hard to do, 00:00:35.86\00:00:38.00 but they do have expiration dates. Okay 00:00:38.03\00:00:40.27 So this might be something that some people would like to add 00:00:40.30\00:00:43.57 to their first aid kit; others wouldn't. 00:00:43.61\00:00:46.17 So this is something good that I think we can add to our 00:00:46.21\00:00:49.81 knowledge base even if we don't have it in our kit, 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.65 it's something we need to know 00:00:52.68\00:00:54.02 about who might benefit from it. Right 00:00:54.05\00:00:56.08 Now we are talking also about cardiovascular disease, Nick. 00:00:56.12\00:00:59.42 That's right and we've had a number of questions 00:00:59.45\00:01:01.82 coming into the website... 00:01:01.86\00:01:03.19 Well let's hold off on the questions here for a second. 00:01:03.22\00:01:04.93 I just want to make sure that everyone... 00:01:04.96\00:01:06.70 on our program, we like to leave them at least two things 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.16 that they can do today that you can take with you home 00:01:09.20\00:01:12.33 that you can do something to improve your health. 00:01:12.37\00:01:14.87 And #1, realize that cardiovascular disease 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.54 is a problem and we want to meet your need... 00:01:17.57\00:01:20.58 And one of the things we talked about today is 00:01:20.61\00:01:22.41 lower fat in the diet and we get fat from animals. 00:01:22.44\00:01:27.08 So we want to get that as low as we can go, 00:01:27.12\00:01:29.48 and if you're having symptoms, you might want to consider 00:01:29.52\00:01:32.29 zero fat or as close to that. Right 00:01:32.32\00:01:34.42 And so that's negative though, 00:01:34.46\00:01:36.76 you know, a lot of people don't like negatives, 00:01:36.79\00:01:38.83 but let's focus on positives. 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.96 So what is something we can do? 00:01:41.00\00:01:42.83 Let's focus on something we can do. 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.53 GREENS! Eat more greens. 00:01:44.57\00:01:47.00 I like to eat fresh greens because it makes nitric oxide. 00:01:47.04\00:01:50.21 It helps blood vessels around the body - in the heart, 00:01:50.24\00:01:53.17 in the brain, everywhere needs better blood. 00:01:53.21\00:01:55.88 So I try to eat greens; 3 or 4 fresh greens a day. 00:01:55.91\00:01:58.51 What I do Nick, is I just take some spinach or Swiss chard, 00:01:58.55\00:02:02.28 or some type of green and I eat it - now I can eat it raw. 00:02:02.32\00:02:05.99 Now some people that need to make salads can 00:02:06.02\00:02:08.22 make some salads and put some balsamic vinaigrette. 00:02:08.26\00:02:11.46 That doesn't have much fat and just practice on doing 00:02:11.49\00:02:14.30 that and see how you feel. 00:02:14.33\00:02:16.06 If you start eating more greens and less fat, 00:02:16.10\00:02:19.10 you're going to feel better, and all of a sudden you'll say, 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.74 "Man, I do feel better! I can make another change." 00:02:21.77\00:02:24.47 And if you want to learn more, go to one of these websites 00:02:24.51\00:02:26.98 that we talked about... 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.74 You know, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.org 00:02:28.78\00:02:32.05 is an excellent site; Dr. Esselstyn has a 00:02:32.08\00:02:34.88 wonderful site; Dr. McDougall, Dr. Ornish, many of them 00:02:34.92\00:02:37.92 or they can go to our website, heartwiseministries.org 00:02:37.95\00:02:40.96 to move one step at a time to lower their chance 00:02:40.99\00:02:44.16 of having cardiovascular disease. 00:02:44.19\00:02:45.63 Now Nick, I think we're ready to go to the questions. 00:02:45.66\00:02:50.07 Yeah, we have people write in to us on our website, 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.30 and Dr. Marcum and other physicians help answer 00:02:52.33\00:02:54.40 and point people in the right direction 00:02:54.44\00:02:56.14 when it comes to their health. 00:02:56.17\00:02:57.51 And some of the questions we have today on 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.01 cardiovascular disease are pretty interesting. 00:02:59.04\00:03:01.51 One viewer writes: "Is hypertension considered 00:03:01.54\00:03:04.41 cardiovascular disease?" 00:03:04.45\00:03:05.78 Yeah well, it could be, but hypertension to me, 00:03:05.81\00:03:09.95 is a symptom. 00:03:09.98\00:03:11.32 So if a person has high blood pressure, 00:03:11.35\00:03:13.39 I want to know - why do they have high blood pressure? 00:03:13.42\00:03:16.56 You know, Nick, if I put the 00:03:16.59\00:03:18.03 EpiPen in you, your blood pressure 00:03:18.06\00:03:19.86 would go up... I'd have some high blood pressure. 00:03:19.89\00:03:21.66 And the treatment for that would be the EpiPen. 00:03:21.70\00:03:23.43 Now if we needed it to go up, that's a good thing. Sure 00:03:23.47\00:03:26.13 Some people that have chronic pain 00:03:26.17\00:03:28.37 have their blood pressure go up. 00:03:28.40\00:03:29.80 Well, would you want to give them a blood pressure pill? 00:03:29.84\00:03:32.11 Prefer not to take a pill. No, or you'd want to treat 00:03:32.14\00:03:34.44 the underlying problem. That's right 00:03:34.48\00:03:35.88 So, when we talk about high blood pressure, 00:03:35.91\00:03:38.31 it's usually what's causing the underlying problem. 00:03:38.35\00:03:41.05 Now, high blood pressure prolonged - can damage 00:03:41.08\00:03:44.05 things because it makes the arteries weaker, 00:03:44.09\00:03:46.39 it makes the heart... it's like the heart has to 00:03:46.42\00:03:48.12 pump against a lot of pressure. 00:03:48.16\00:03:49.79 And sooner or later the heart gets thick 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.39 and then it gets weak. 00:03:51.43\00:03:52.76 So they call high blood pressure "the silent killer." 00:03:52.79\00:03:55.16 But the key for high blood pressure is fine out the 00:03:55.20\00:03:58.03 reason "why is it high." 00:03:58.07\00:03:59.57 Is it diet, is it stress, is it sleep apnea, is it pain, 00:03:59.60\00:04:05.01 is it worries, some medicines can do it. 00:04:05.04\00:04:08.11 Find out the reason why, and if you can find out 00:04:08.14\00:04:10.48 the reason why and get it down, 00:04:10.51\00:04:11.98 then you're lowering your risk of damaging 00:04:12.01\00:04:14.22 these blood vessels. That's an interesting point. 00:04:14.28\00:04:16.32 You know, I think we often, and I'm sure it's valid, 00:04:16.38\00:04:18.39 that food often causes these things, 00:04:18.45\00:04:20.82 but there are so many others there that you just mentioned. 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.46 Yeah, well we talked about earlier how people that eat 00:04:22.49\00:04:25.03 high fat diets - you know, that damages nitric oxide 00:04:25.06\00:04:30.30 so the arteries don't get bigger. 00:04:30.33\00:04:31.67 In fact, one of the treatments to lower blood pressure, 00:04:31.70\00:04:34.30 if it's diet, is to move towards 00:04:34.34\00:04:35.90 a whole food, plant-based diet, 00:04:35.94\00:04:38.17 and get processed foods out of the diet. 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.64 That can lower blood pressure dramatically, 00:04:40.68\00:04:42.78 and that helps most of the people do better. 00:04:42.81\00:04:45.28 So really, the cause of blood pressure 00:04:45.31\00:04:47.48 is not a blood pressure medicine. 00:04:47.52\00:04:49.12 So the solution is not going to really be blood pressure 00:04:49.15\00:04:52.15 medicines even though there are some conditions - thyroid, 00:04:52.22\00:04:55.22 kidney, artery disease; there are some genetic 00:04:55.26\00:04:57.63 conditions that can cause high blood pressure, 00:04:57.66\00:04:59.56 but most of the ones that I see are lifestyle-related. 00:04:59.59\00:05:02.66 Just extra weight - exercise will lower blood pressure, 00:05:02.70\00:05:05.43 getting the weight off you will lower blood pressure. 00:05:05.47\00:05:07.74 Lots of things can do that. 00:05:07.77\00:05:09.27 You just mentioned "medications with cardiovascular disease," 00:05:09.30\00:05:13.01 we have a viewer who asks: "What are the side effects 00:05:13.04\00:05:15.44 of statins and are there alternatives?" 00:05:15.48\00:05:17.48 That is a great questions and I get that very frequently. 00:05:17.51\00:05:21.05 Statins are medicines that lower 00:05:21.08\00:05:23.28 and stabilize cholesterol in the body. Okay 00:05:23.32\00:05:26.86 And what I tell people, sometimes the benefit of the 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.52 medicine is worth it. 00:05:29.56\00:05:31.59 So if a person has had unstable heart disease, 00:05:31.63\00:05:34.40 high cholesterol, strong family, history, 00:05:34.43\00:05:37.17 I say, they might benefit from a statin - if they're 00:05:37.20\00:05:39.77 not having side effects. 00:05:39.80\00:05:41.14 The most common side effects are damage to the liver, 00:05:41.17\00:05:43.51 muscle problems. 00:05:43.54\00:05:44.87 It can affect your blood sugar. 00:05:44.91\00:05:46.44 It can also even affect the brain - statin sometimes. Really 00:05:46.47\00:05:49.28 But if a person says, "Listen, I'm going to eat a really 00:05:49.31\00:05:52.21 healthy diet," and they get their cholesterol really low, 00:05:52.25\00:05:55.45 they might not need to take a statin. 00:05:55.48\00:05:58.09 So everything, Nick, we put in our body has an input. 00:05:58.12\00:06:02.46 You know, and an input can either be bad or good. 00:06:02.49\00:06:05.56 So the food you put in is either going to be bad for your 00:06:05.59\00:06:08.20 chemistry or good for your chemistry. 00:06:08.23\00:06:10.43 The thoughts are either good or they're bad. 00:06:10.47\00:06:12.87 So, the same thing with the statin - it has a benefit, 00:06:12.90\00:06:15.60 but it has a danger. 00:06:15.64\00:06:16.97 Do the benefits outweigh the risk? 00:06:17.01\00:06:19.11 And I try to ask everyone about that. 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.34 Now, several people I've had with heart disease, 00:06:21.38\00:06:23.55 they get their cholesterol down, they exercise, 00:06:23.58\00:06:27.65 they do everything right and they might not benefit 00:06:27.68\00:06:30.55 as much from a statin as someone that doesn't do anything right. 00:06:30.59\00:06:34.06 And I still want to help the person that doesn't 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.79 do anything right too, and if they're not having a 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.53 side effect, they might benefit from a statin. 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.16 Now some people, their belief system... 00:06:41.20\00:06:43.57 they believe that the medicine is hurting them. Really 00:06:43.60\00:06:46.10 So if a person has a strong belief system, 00:06:46.13\00:06:48.44 and they say, "I don't think the medicine is helping me," 00:06:48.47\00:06:50.64 so no matter what - if they think it's hurting them, 00:06:50.67\00:06:53.07 it is hurting them. It's going to hurt them, yes. 00:06:53.11\00:06:54.71 "As a man thinketh, so he is." 00:06:54.74\00:06:57.05 And there is something called "healing beliefs," 00:06:57.08\00:06:59.85 if you believe in something, then it has some change 00:06:59.88\00:07:02.68 in the brain chemistry and it might help. 00:07:02.72\00:07:04.99 Dr. Herbert Benson, out of Harvard, has studied 00:07:05.02\00:07:07.69 healing beliefs and he has found out that 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.46 if people believe it's hurting them, it is hurting them. 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.93 So there's a belief system that has to be thrown in 00:07:11.96\00:07:15.03 when you talk about statins as well. 00:07:15.06\00:07:16.77 So there's a place for it, but if a person will do 00:07:16.80\00:07:19.27 everything else, maybe they won't have the need for it. 00:07:19.30\00:07:22.44 Okay... Another viewer asks: "Should all people 00:07:22.47\00:07:25.71 who have had a heart attack take a blood thinner?" 00:07:25.74\00:07:28.71 Well, pretty much, I think all people that have 00:07:28.74\00:07:31.01 taken a heart attack, unless they have a side effect 00:07:31.05\00:07:33.72 which is bleeding, should be on some type of blood thinners. 00:07:33.75\00:07:37.59 The most common one is low dose baby aspirin; 00:07:37.62\00:07:42.66 depending on the situation, there are stronger ones. 00:07:42.69\00:07:45.16 You know, Plavix is a stronger one. 00:07:45.19\00:07:47.03 We have higher doses of aspirin. 00:07:47.06\00:07:48.76 But one thing I want to focus on, Nick... 00:07:48.80\00:07:50.67 A lot of people don't realize that other things 00:07:50.70\00:07:52.87 can thin out the blood too. 00:07:52.90\00:07:54.24 You mean some natural ways to thin the blood? Yes 00:07:54.27\00:07:55.60 One of the natural things is having enough water! Really? 00:07:55.64\00:07:58.24 When you get dehydrated, guess what happens 00:07:58.27\00:08:00.18 to the blood...It's thicker! 00:08:00.21\00:08:01.88 Over 80% of the blood is water, 00:08:01.91\00:08:03.55 so if you don't drink, the blood gets thicker. 00:08:03.58\00:08:05.95 STRESS will thicken the blood and make it more likely to clot. 00:08:05.98\00:08:10.59 So the more stress you're under, the more the blood thickens. 00:08:10.62\00:08:14.09 There are things like omega 3-6-9 fatty acids 00:08:14.12\00:08:17.59 which you get in foods like almonds, flax... 00:08:17.63\00:08:20.90 Those things can help thin out the blood too. 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.60 So there are other things out there... 00:08:23.63\00:08:25.03 A lot of people don't even realize this, 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.80 but tomatoes - around the tomato seed is a 00:08:26.84\00:08:28.90 chemical that can help thin out the blood a little bit too. 00:08:28.94\00:08:31.81 So if a person has had a heart attack and they're not 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.78 having a side effect, I usually have them on a 00:08:34.81\00:08:37.85 baby aspirin at least, sometimes more - because I think 00:08:37.88\00:08:41.62 the benefit outweighs the risk of that. Sure 00:08:41.65\00:08:44.59 So every individual, you talk to your doctor, 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.92 and ask him, "What's the benefit, what's the risk, 00:08:46.96\00:08:49.86 and is there anything I can do to benefit myself 00:08:49.89\00:08:52.26 so I might not need to take as much medicine? 00:08:52.29\00:08:54.56 You know, talking about benefits and risks, 00:08:54.60\00:08:56.36 when should a person consider bypass surgery? 00:08:56.40\00:08:59.20 That can be a risky surgery. Yes 00:08:59.23\00:09:00.67 And I do send people for bypass, 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.80 and it's really if a person is having lots of symptoms. 00:09:02.84\00:09:06.47 Let's say they haven't lived very healthy through the years; 00:09:06.51\00:09:09.21 let's say they can't walk up a hill because they have 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.41 lots of chest pain, lots of shortness of breath, 00:09:11.45\00:09:14.25 and we do some testing... 00:09:14.28\00:09:15.95 We do testing called, "stress test and angiograms," 00:09:15.98\00:09:18.62 and they have blockages in many of the arteries, 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.96 well that person might benefit from having a bypass surgery 00:09:20.99\00:09:24.76 not because it fixes the problem, 00:09:24.79\00:09:26.83 but it helps them get out and do more and exercise, 00:09:26.86\00:09:30.13 and have a healthier lifestyle. Right 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.17 That's where it benefits, so at that point, 00:09:32.20\00:09:33.94 I say "there's a risk of the bypass, but the bypass 00:09:33.97\00:09:37.07 benefits probably will outweigh the risks 00:09:37.11\00:09:39.24 because it will help you feel better, do more, 00:09:39.27\00:09:41.31 and also gives an alternative blood supply to the heart. 00:09:41.34\00:09:44.15 So if they did have a heart attack, 00:09:44.18\00:09:45.51 the heart attack seems to be less as severe, 00:09:45.55\00:09:48.22 but I tell them, "It doesn't fix the problem, 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.39 it just treats the symptom." 00:09:50.42\00:09:52.15 So there's a lot of things that there's risk and rewards 00:09:52.19\00:09:55.92 and with medications, there's a lot of risks 00:09:55.96\00:09:57.56 sometimes, but there's also, I'm hearing you say there's 00:09:57.59\00:09:59.43 a lot of natural treatments. 00:09:59.46\00:10:01.80 Well you know, a lot of people don't think that a 00:10:01.83\00:10:03.63 natural remedy would be "moving." Right! 00:10:03.67\00:10:05.83 A natural remedy would be drinking water. 00:10:05.87\00:10:07.94 A natural remedy would be eating healthy foods 00:10:07.97\00:10:10.77 because they have the healing properties too, 00:10:10.81\00:10:12.74 and a lot of people don't think about that, 00:10:12.77\00:10:14.91 but I would rather have them do that than treat symptoms... 00:10:14.94\00:10:18.25 Because symptoms just... they get worse, 00:10:18.28\00:10:21.15 more medicines - we don't fix the problem. 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.08 So today, I want everyone to remember to eat more greens, 00:10:23.12\00:10:26.59 and less fat and it will keep your arteries much healthier 00:10:26.62\00:10:30.23 than if you don't do those things. Right 00:10:30.26\00:10:32.39 Well that sounds like some great advice, 00:10:32.43\00:10:33.93 and we hope that you at home have appreciated this program, 00:10:33.96\00:10:36.67 and benefit from it. 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.03 And, we also know that ultimately 00:10:38.07\00:10:39.97 our Creator has the best answers for our health, 00:10:40.00\00:10:42.64 and sometimes it takes intervention from on High 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.07 to help us become better. Absolutely!
