Right 00:01:11.77\00:01:15.94 And I know you like to exercise a lot. 00:01:15.97\00:01:17.91 I love to exercise - I get out 00:01:17.94\00:01:19.37 and ride my bicycle all year round, 00:01:19.41\00:01:21.54 and in the summer I like to get out on the water, it's great. 00:01:21.58\00:01:25.01 So we're going to spend today's program talking about movement, 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.75 how to change the chemistry of the entire body 00:01:28.78\00:01:31.39 on a regular basis and what it does for you. 00:01:31.42\00:01:33.96 We're going to answer a lot of questions, 00:01:33.99\00:01:35.82 and we're going to also talk a little bit about first aid. 00:01:35.86\00:01:39.16 Do you know what first aid is Nick? Yes 00:01:39.19\00:01:40.96 You know, first aid is something that I've done a little bit of 00:01:41.00\00:01:43.33 training in, but tell us why do we need to know first aid? 00:01:43.37\00:01:46.37 Well, you know, everyone will come and help someone 00:01:46.40\00:01:49.67 some day in life and a lot of people, if they don't have 00:01:49.70\00:01:52.37 planned what they want to do, guess what? 00:01:52.41\00:01:55.04 They panic, you know... "I'm scared, I don't know what 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.48 to do," so we're going to talk over the series of programs, 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.12 some basic first aid steps you can do and also some 00:02:00.15\00:02:03.42 things that you might want to 00:02:03.45\00:02:04.79 put in your first aid kit at home... Right! 00:02:04.82\00:02:06.82 Because some people haven't even assembled 00:02:06.86\00:02:08.66 a first aid kit. 00:02:08.69\00:02:10.03 So we're going to talk about all the interesting things... 00:02:10.06\00:02:12.19 How to use them; What are some of the most 00:02:12.23\00:02:14.13 valuable things to have in your first aid kit. 00:02:14.16\00:02:16.50 And in a few minutes, we're going to talk about 00:02:16.53\00:02:18.27 some of the basics. 00:02:18.30\00:02:19.67 But first, I wanted to introduce our 00:02:19.70\00:02:21.57 audience to you Nick. Thank you. 00:02:21.60\00:02:23.41 Yeah, Nick is going to be our new host of 00:02:23.44\00:02:25.94 "Ultimate Prescription" and Nick works with me 00:02:25.97\00:02:28.14 at "Heartwise," and he does many different things 00:02:28.18\00:02:30.91 including production and he is producing 00:02:30.95\00:02:32.81 a kid's program for "Three Angels." 00:02:32.85\00:02:34.22 Now that's taken you a lot more time than you thought. 00:02:34.25\00:02:36.18 Yeah, you know, sometimes we take on projects and they 00:02:36.22\00:02:38.05 are a bit more involved than we first realized. 00:02:38.12\00:02:41.16 Well kids don't hold still like you think. 00:02:41.19\00:02:43.09 That's right, kids are great, you never know 00:02:43.12\00:02:44.69 exactly what you're going to get, 00:02:44.73\00:02:46.06 but that's what keeps it exciting. 00:02:46.09\00:02:47.43 Remember I was filming one not too long ago and he was 00:02:47.46\00:02:50.10 doing some things in the camera 00:02:50.13\00:02:51.50 when I wasn't even paying attention... 00:02:51.53\00:02:53.23 But kids, they do interesting things. 00:02:53.27\00:02:54.94 But you know, Nick, kids don't seem to have a problem, 00:02:54.97\00:02:58.21 much problem with movement, do they? 00:02:58.24\00:02:59.97 Right, kids exercise all the time and it's not 00:03:00.01\00:03:02.08 necessarily because they're trying to exercise, 00:03:02.11\00:03:04.71 but they're just playing and sometimes as we grow up, 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.05 we don't get enough of that. 00:03:07.08\00:03:08.42 You know, I get a lot of people asking... 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.85 "I want to take a natural remedy," you know, 00:03:11.89\00:03:14.19 "I want to take a natural remedy for blood pressure," 00:03:14.22\00:03:16.46 "I want to take a natural remedy for joint pains," 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.79 and I don't blame them. 00:03:18.83\00:03:20.23 I don't like to write prescriptions for pills either 00:03:20.26\00:03:22.86 if I don't need to. 00:03:22.90\00:03:24.23 But I want everyone today to think about the natural 00:03:24.27\00:03:27.57 remedy of exercise as a natural remedy... 00:03:27.60\00:03:30.71 Something that's very important for the body. 00:03:30.74\00:03:33.41 Now Nick, you like to ride your bike, but I know that 00:03:33.44\00:03:35.88 since you've had a child, you've had to slow down a little bit. 00:03:35.91\00:03:38.25 Yeah, you know, sometimes I have to move my exercise inside 00:03:38.28\00:03:41.62 on the floor with my 6- month-old, 00:03:41.65\00:03:43.62 and we play with his toys. 00:03:43.65\00:03:45.42 So today, we're not going to use the word "exercise." 00:03:45.45\00:03:48.62 We're going to use the word "movement." 00:03:48.66\00:03:50.66 I like that word, "movement" because everyone 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.59 can move the body parts, and I just want to sort of go 00:03:52.63\00:03:56.33 through some of the things that movement helps in the body. 00:03:56.36\00:03:59.57 A lot of people don't realize that movement changes the 00:03:59.60\00:04:03.61 blood vessels of every single part of the body it changes 00:04:03.64\00:04:08.51 because it enhances the ability of our blood vessels 00:04:08.54\00:04:11.25 to get bigger and get smaller, it makes them healthier. 00:04:11.28\00:04:14.25 The lining in the blood vessels is called the "endothelium," 00:04:14.28\00:04:17.42 so when we exercise, literally, we take better blood 00:04:17.45\00:04:20.86 with oxygen to every part of the body. 00:04:20.89\00:04:23.43 So exercise is a natural remedy, a treatment, a prescription 00:04:23.46\00:04:28.26 for every part of your body. 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.23 It helps people with dementia... not to get dementia, 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.90 and helps them to think better. Right 00:04:32.93\00:04:34.70 Good blood supply, they do better. 00:04:34.74\00:04:36.84 It helps your heart do better, lowers your blood pressure, 00:04:36.87\00:04:40.18 lowers the risk of heart attack. 00:04:40.21\00:04:41.74 It helps your lungs do better because you take deep breaths, 00:04:41.78\00:04:45.71 gets oxygen to every part of the body. Right 00:04:45.75\00:04:48.95 It keeps your bones better, Nick. 00:04:48.98\00:04:50.49 It keeps you from breaking bones because your bones are stronger, 00:04:50.52\00:04:53.46 the muscles get stronger around those so you are less 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.56 likely to fall... Now what were you going to say? 00:04:55.59\00:04:57.59 Well I was just going to say, a lot of people think that 00:04:57.63\00:04:59.36 they have to go to the gym to exercise; 00:04:59.39\00:05:01.26 they have to do something really difficult to exercise, 00:05:01.30\00:05:03.70 but it sounds like you're saying... simply moving, 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.10 getting up from your desk and walking around the building, 00:05:06.13\00:05:08.94 taking a nature hike at lunchtime - it's simple stuff 00:05:08.97\00:05:12.27 that helps get all these benefits. 00:05:12.31\00:05:14.11 But we have to put it in our day; in fact you know, 00:05:14.14\00:05:17.08 first we have to understand that we have a need. 00:05:17.11\00:05:20.18 We have a need to move. 00:05:20.22\00:05:21.65 When we're not moving, guess what? 00:05:21.68\00:05:23.39 Stress is put on the body. 00:05:23.42\00:05:25.45 When stress happens over a prolonged period of time, 00:05:25.49\00:05:28.12 things malfunction. Right 00:05:28.16\00:05:29.89 In fact, I've got a study here that came out from... 00:05:29.92\00:05:32.76 just to let people know, this is from Stanford Medical School, 00:05:32.79\00:05:35.96 and they studied people over a 6 year time and they found out, 00:05:36.00\00:05:39.83 this is very interesting, that the chance of people 00:05:39.87\00:05:44.61 not exercising rose from 19 to 52% of people 00:05:44.64\00:05:48.44 didn't exercise at all or move at all in women, 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.15 and in men it went up dramatically as well. 00:05:51.18\00:05:54.15 So this is part of the reason that we have our body 00:05:54.18\00:05:57.65 malfunction, more stress, more heart attacks, 00:05:57.69\00:06:00.52 more high blood pressure, lots of bad things happen 00:06:00.56\00:06:03.49 when we don't move, so it is a big problem. Right! 00:06:03.53\00:06:06.80 Now before we get on to more about exercise, 00:06:06.83\00:06:08.93 let's go back and talk about first aid a little bit. 00:06:08.96\00:06:10.77 We have a mask here; what are some of the things 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.67 that you need to do first when you come upon someone 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.40 who maybe is unconscious. 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.31 If you want to provide first aid, 00:06:18.34\00:06:19.67 what are some of the things that you're going to do first? 00:06:19.71\00:06:21.64 Well you know, that's a big question, 00:06:21.68\00:06:25.98 but a lot of people get scared. 00:06:26.01\00:06:28.05 And I want to first talk, well what do you do if 00:06:28.08\00:06:30.72 you see someone that's not breathing and not moving? 00:06:30.75\00:06:34.12 What do you do? What do we do? 00:06:34.16\00:06:37.23 Well, I think the very first thing I do when that happens 00:06:37.26\00:06:40.90 to me in a situation is I say a prayer. 00:06:40.93\00:06:44.10 I ask God for a miracle, and if He is going to use me 00:06:44.13\00:06:48.07 for the miracle, I ask to have extra strength and power. 00:06:48.10\00:06:51.77 So that's what I would do, a quick prayer. 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.27 I don't sit down and do a long prayer - it's very quick, 00:06:53.31\00:06:56.34 and get to the point, I want to help. 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.21 The next thing I do is, if you have a first aid kit 00:06:58.25\00:07:02.32 or a device, you want to always ask... you know, you've asked 00:07:02.35\00:07:05.09 for the Ultimate Prescription, the Ultimate Physician to help 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.49 you, but I want other people to help me as well. Certainly! 00:07:07.52\00:07:10.19 So I try to activate 911 or you can scream. 00:07:10.23\00:07:14.40 You know, if you have a phone, 00:07:14.43\00:07:16.03 you can dial 911, you can scream. 00:07:16.06\00:07:17.57 A lot of people, they're out in the field, 00:07:17.60\00:07:19.57 in their first aid kits, Nick, they now have these portable 00:07:19.60\00:07:23.07 cell phones that they can just turn on - so they can 00:07:23.10\00:07:26.27 call for help even if they're far, far away. 00:07:26.31\00:07:29.64 And then once a person... for the first thing, 00:07:29.68\00:07:32.98 you ask God for help, you try to get help on the way 00:07:33.01\00:07:35.82 either through a phone, yelling, send someone for help, 00:07:35.85\00:07:39.22 personal cell phone, call 911, that's the basics. 00:07:39.25\00:07:43.19 And then, the first thing is when a person is down 00:07:43.22\00:07:46.43 and not breathing and not moving, 00:07:46.46\00:07:48.46 you have to realize, you cannot really hurt that person. Sure! 00:07:48.50\00:07:51.90 Yeah, you have to be brave and start out with something. 00:07:51.93\00:07:54.74 And, they have some new first aid guidelines, 00:07:54.77\00:07:57.84 and pretty much the first aid guidelines 00:07:57.87\00:07:59.87 just say to start CPR. Okay 00:07:59.91\00:08:02.48 So you want to start CPR, and if you don't know where to 00:08:02.51\00:08:06.15 put your hands on the chest, there are some cards 00:08:06.18\00:08:11.05 that you can put in your first aid kit that show you 00:08:11.09\00:08:13.42 where to put it - over the xiphoid and you just start 00:08:13.46\00:08:16.06 pushing down on the sternum about 1-1/2 inches or so, 00:08:16.09\00:08:20.53 and you just do that as fast as you can while you're 00:08:20.56\00:08:24.07 waiting for more help. 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.43 A lot of times, that will help out... 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.37 You're not going to hurt that person by doing that. 00:08:27.40\00:08:29.47 Now, another thing we have that might be helpful 00:08:29.50\00:08:32.17 in the first aid kit is, after a while, if they're not breathing, 00:08:32.21\00:08:36.24 you know, you can actually blow some breaths in, 00:08:36.28\00:08:38.78 and this is a mask and it's not too hard to use. 00:08:38.81\00:08:41.88 You know, years ago, people used to do mouth-to-mouth. Right 00:08:41.92\00:08:45.35 Now, if you were passed out, how would you feel 00:08:45.39\00:08:47.32 about me doing mouth-to-mouth? 00:08:47.36\00:08:48.96 If I was passed out, I want any help you can offer. 00:08:48.99\00:08:51.59 Okay, so well you wouldn't feel bad with mouth-to-mouth? 00:08:51.63\00:08:53.66 No, but I understand that there 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.43 are a lot of reasons to use a mask. Right 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.00 Some of the other people don't like to do mouth-to-mouth, 00:08:57.03\00:08:59.80 and the reason they don't like it is because they can 00:08:59.83\00:09:01.87 spread germs, things can be contaminated; 00:09:01.90\00:09:04.41 all sorts of bad things could happen. 00:09:04.44\00:09:05.87 So, once someone is doing CPR and we move to that, 00:09:05.91\00:09:09.18 of course, there are many courses you can take, 00:09:09.21\00:09:11.51 but we pull out this mask and this mask is great to have 00:09:11.55\00:09:15.02 in a situation and you can put it out and it has a 00:09:15.05\00:09:18.39 valve on it and you can attach oxygen on it, Nick. 00:09:18.42\00:09:22.06 And you just push it out here and there's your mask, 00:09:22.09\00:09:25.19 and what you would do is, you would fit it over 00:09:25.23\00:09:28.06 like this on the mouth and then you could blow into that, 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.83 and you'd see the chest come up. 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.60 So this is a mask that keeps a person, safe, sterile, 00:09:32.63\00:09:37.11 and also helps get a tight seal, a tight seal over the airways. 00:09:37.14\00:09:41.34 You can't hear me very good when I do that... 00:09:41.38\00:09:43.41 And also if you wanted to hook up oxygen to that, 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.65 so this is the basics that you want to have in a first aid kit, 00:09:45.68\00:09:49.18 a nice mask like that is not too hard to get. 00:09:49.22\00:09:51.72 So today, we want to start on first aid. 00:09:51.75\00:09:55.56 We want someone not to be scared, call for help, 00:09:55.59\00:09:59.53 both heavenly help, as well as earthly help; 00:09:59.56\00:10:03.06 start CPR and if you want to learn more, of course, 00:10:03.10\00:10:06.00 take a course and have one of these in your bag 00:10:06.03\00:10:09.04 that you can deliver oxygen if needed. 00:10:09.07\00:10:11.47 Right, and what are some of the organizations 00:10:11.51\00:10:12.87 that offer CPR training? 00:10:12.91\00:10:14.24 If I want to take a course, who should I look to? 00:10:14.28\00:10:16.14 Oh, there are many... the American Heart Association, 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.78 the American Red Cross and you can go into the computer 00:10:18.81\00:10:22.28 and look on that, but they've made it much simpler, 00:10:22.32\00:10:24.65 and it's almost now to where you just give chest compressions 00:10:24.69\00:10:27.32 so many times and then you blow in and it's not very hard to do. 00:10:27.36\00:10:32.23 So every time we're together on "Ultimate Prescription," 00:10:32.26\00:10:36.00 we're going to be adding something that someone can do 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.53 to help serve the world because you never know 00:10:38.57\00:10:41.00 when a loved one or you might be in a car situation... 00:10:41.04\00:10:44.24 Tell me, you had something on a bike not too long ago. 00:10:44.27\00:10:46.51 Yeah, you know, I was out riding with some friends and we 00:10:46.54\00:10:49.14 came across a cyclist who was unconscious 00:10:49.18\00:10:51.41 on the side of the road. 00:10:51.45\00:10:52.78 And, you know, it's a scary situation, 00:10:52.81\00:10:54.15 but the first thing to remember is "don't be scared..." Right 00:10:54.18\00:10:56.42 Because, like you said, you can't really hurt 00:10:56.45\00:10:58.42 this person, they need your help. 00:10:58.45\00:10:59.79 So they need you to be active and involved in their care. 00:10:59.82\00:11:02.19 And so, he was breathing okay on his own and he had a pulse, 00:11:02.22\00:11:06.49 and we called 911 and then we just stayed with him. 00:11:06.53\00:11:10.10 And 911 came and picked him up, and he had had a 00:11:10.13\00:11:13.64 traumatic injury on his bicycle. 00:11:13.67\00:11:16.64 We were so thankful that God directed us 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.81 because we weren't planning to ride that way, 00:11:18.84\00:11:20.38 but we were so thankful that God directed us to find him. 00:11:20.41\00:11:22.31 You know, so first aid is just what it is... first aid, 00:11:22.34\00:11:25.05 and that can be many ways, so it's something that 00:11:25.08\00:11:27.52 we want to talk about because we want our viewers 00:11:27.55\00:11:29.88 to be able to serve people if they should need it. 00:11:29.92\00:11:33.15 And in fact, if we look in the chapter of Luke in the Bible, 00:11:33.19\00:11:37.19 Christ came and He ministered to someone's need 00:11:37.23\00:11:40.60 about 40 to 50% of the time, first - He didn't talk about 00:11:40.63\00:11:44.17 anything else - He ministered to their need, 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.13 and that need, hopefully, it won't be first aid, 00:11:46.17\00:11:48.47 but we're going to talk about a bunch of first aid scenarios 00:11:48.50\00:11:53.01 that we can talk to our views about where they can at least 00:11:53.04\00:11:55.71 have the basics of first aid, make a first aid kit, 00:11:55.74\00:11:58.85 and have a plan should someone get sick. 00:11:58.88\00:12:01.32 But Nick, I want to get back to what 00:12:01.35\00:12:03.05 we're talking about today. 00:12:03.08\00:12:04.42 Before we get to our questions, we talked about exercise... 00:12:04.45\00:12:08.26 helps every part of the body. 00:12:08.29\00:12:09.79 A lot of people don't realize, but last year an article 00:12:09.82\00:12:13.70 came out in the "Journal of Circulation," 00:12:13.73\00:12:15.80 and they studied two groups of people; 00:12:15.83\00:12:18.40 one group sat at a desk all day. 00:12:18.43\00:12:21.07 You know, people don't move around very much anymore. 00:12:21.10\00:12:24.97 They sit at desks, they do computers, 00:12:25.01\00:12:26.88 they might sit behind a television camera, 00:12:26.91\00:12:29.74 they might sit in a production room all day long 00:12:29.78\00:12:32.65 and they might not move. 00:12:32.68\00:12:34.28 And this study studied in "Circulation," 00:12:34.32\00:12:36.42 people that would get up and move around all day, 00:12:36.45\00:12:39.39 every hour - they did it every hour, 00:12:39.42\00:12:41.66 versus people that would do 45 minutes 00:12:41.69\00:12:43.63 in a gym and sit all day. Right, right 00:12:43.66\00:12:46.23 And the health benefits were greater for the persons 00:12:46.26\00:12:49.63 that would not exercise, but would just move around 00:12:49.66\00:12:52.00 the room every hour. 00:12:52.03\00:12:53.64 And when you move around the room every hour, 00:12:53.67\00:12:56.91 it increases your metabolism, speeds up, 00:12:56.94\00:12:59.24 insulin gets better. 00:12:59.27\00:13:00.61 One of the things you don't realize when you don't move, 00:13:00.64\00:13:02.71 guess what... the bladder doesn't move, 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.68 so you have more chance of getting urine infections 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.62 if you sit all day long. 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.29 The joints, if you don't move it - you lose it. 00:13:10.32\00:13:12.79 They get stiffer - the older you get, the stiffer they get. 00:13:12.82\00:13:16.86 All sorts of things go bad, your heart rate slows down, 00:13:16.89\00:13:19.96 your blood pressure changes, your metabolism changes, 00:13:20.00\00:13:22.83 so just moving around every hour 00:13:22.86\00:13:25.03 is very beneficial to their health. 00:13:25.07\00:13:27.64 So that's one thing I want to leave today with everyone, 00:13:27.67\00:13:29.80 at least move around every hour. 00:13:29.84\00:13:31.54 It doesn't have to be fancy, you can just stretch your 00:13:31.57\00:13:33.61 arms out, move every part of your body, 00:13:33.64\00:13:35.64 walk around the room and then sit back down. 00:13:35.68\00:13:38.61 That has a gigantic health benefit. 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.55 Now in this study, if you want to move on to the next step, 00:13:40.58\00:13:44.45 you can also do that and do 00:13:44.49\00:13:46.82 aerobic exercise about 45 minutes a day. Okay 00:13:46.86\00:13:50.83 And then they say - you can also do about 15 minutes 00:13:50.86\00:13:53.56 of resistance training like strength training, 00:13:53.60\00:13:56.53 and if you do that at different speeds, 00:13:56.56\00:13:58.50 you know, 6 minutes at one speed, 00:13:58.53\00:14:00.57 6 minutes at a different speed, do the resistance training, 00:14:00.60\00:14:03.87 do move around every hour, then you have really 00:14:03.91\00:14:06.04 helped treat your body with exercise, 00:14:06.07\00:14:09.14 a prescription that changes the entire body, 00:14:09.18\00:14:11.58 lowers the chance of infection. 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.18 You know, exercise, Nick... a lot of people don't realize 00:14:13.21\00:14:15.32 this, but it lowers the chance even of getting cancer. 00:14:15.35\00:14:18.05 Really? Yeah, it lowers the chance 00:14:18.09\00:14:19.75 of getting certain types of cancers; 00:14:19.79\00:14:21.12 lowers the risk of heart attack; 00:14:21.16\00:14:22.76 lowers the risk of diabetes; lowers the risk of dementia. 00:14:22.79\00:14:27.00 It does lots of good things to make you feel better. 00:14:27.03\00:14:29.10 So going to the gym is a good thing to do, 00:14:29.13\00:14:31.33 and getting your workout for half-an-hour or an hour 00:14:31.37\00:14:33.54 in the morning is great, BUT we need to supplement 00:14:33.57\00:14:36.30 that with moving every hour. 00:14:36.34\00:14:37.97 Yes, and remember, moving is a constant process. 00:14:38.01\00:14:41.44 We want to always be moving, you know, God didn't 00:14:41.48\00:14:43.98 design us to sit all day and not move. That's right! 00:14:44.01\00:14:46.95 We were designed... you know in the Garden of Eden, 00:14:46.98\00:14:49.22 there weren't a bunch of chairs! 00:14:49.25\00:14:50.59 We were designed to be moving around, 00:14:50.62\00:14:52.22 taking care of the animals, taking care of the earth, 00:14:52.25\00:14:54.72 moving all of our parts. 00:14:54.76\00:14:56.26 Now as we've gotten away from that model, 00:14:56.29\00:14:58.99 we sat and it puts damage and stress on the body, 00:14:59.03\00:15:01.60 then things start to mess up, 00:15:01.63\00:15:02.96 so that's one thing we want to focus everyone on today. 00:15:03.00\00:15:05.57 Well we'll be right back with some questions from our viewers. 00:15:05.60\00:15:08.00
