00:01 Welcome back to the program, I'm Charles Mills.
00:02 We're here with cardiologist, James Marcum. 00:04 We're talking about health as we do on this program 00:07 every time and some of the frequently asked questions 00:09 that have come in to heartwiseministries.org 00:12 You've made it very clear, Dr. Marcum, 00:14 that the Bible has a lot of prescriptions for us, 00:16 and I've just chosen one here I want to swing by you 00:20 and see what you think, it's found in Psalm 37:23. 00:23 Open it up on the screen here and here's what it says: 00:33 There are 2 parts to this here that "The steps of a good man 00:35 are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in his way." 00:38 You've made it clear that if we are not delighted by what 00:41 we're doing, it's not going to be as effective 00:43 as it can be - am I on the right track here? 00:45 I think so, Charles, and that's another 00:47 wonderful text on the steps of the Lord. 00:50 And you know what, when I think about that text, 00:53 as we enter in a relationship with our God, 00:56 you know, we talked about doing things and 00:57 we don't do things on our own. 01:00 When we do things just on our own, that could be 01:03 stressful because that makes us selfish because we're 01:06 doing it for us, but when we surrender our lives to God, 01:10 He's the One that does the changes for us 01:12 because we said it and He can help us with the steps 01:15 that He wants us to take one-at-a-time, 01:17 sometimes He moves us, sometimes we're running, 01:19 sometimes we're moving slow, but He directs our 01:21 steps when we're in that relationship with Him, 01:24 and He delights in that. 01:25 He's happy about that, so I just think that's 01:28 another great text that shows us the valuable treatment 01:32 that comes from that relationship with God, 01:34 how He helps us to go to A to B, to B to C... 01:37 Well, not everyone... this nutrition thing is not so easy. 01:41 It takes some steps, and the same thing with our brain. 01:44 Getting our brain right and getting us back to the way 01:46 God wants to be, you know, creating a new mind, 01:48 that's not so easy, but He takes us in steps. 01:51 He didn't say - all at once. 01:53 He said there are steps in this relationship, 01:55 and He delights when we're making these steps. 01:58 So it's a wonderful text, Charles. 02:00 Now I know why you put this right here. 02:02 Let's talk about this Dr. Marcum. 02:03 You're talking about steps and how important they are. 02:06 When we start exercising, when we start making the 02:09 transition from where we are to where we want to be, 02:12 this little device here is kind of an important little device 02:15 that we use to measure our steps. 02:17 This is.. what is this called? 02:18 That's a pedometer. A pedometer, okay. 02:20 And you wear it on your belt and it keeps track 02:23 of the steps you take and it gives you all sorts of 02:25 information and it can turn that into distance 02:28 in kilometers or miles, but that really measures 02:30 how active you are and one of the most common questions 02:33 we get to the website is - 02:35 "How much exercise do I need each day." 02:37 So every time we take a step, this measures it. Yep 02:40 Is there any kind of measuring in the steps we're taking 02:43 to have a good relationship with God? 02:45 Is there any kind of pedometer we can have for that? 02:48 Yeah, there are lots of pedometers and, you know, 02:52 just look at the fruit, you know, look at the fruit. Yes 02:57 Look at the things that God has accomplished in your life. 03:01 Look at the evidence in your life. 03:03 You know, look back 5 years ago, 03:05 and I ask people to write a diary about you and God. Yes 03:08 And keep down the things where you've seen Him 03:11 lead in your life, whether it be radio programs 03:14 or a chance to reach people or a success that you might 03:17 have at work or opportunities to serve. 03:20 And as you see the way God has led you and look back, 03:23 you say, "Yes, sometimes it feels like I'm not making 03:25 many steps, but when I look back, I am making steps. 03:28 This program is a step as far as I'm concerned. Yeah 03:31 We are taking steps making these programs because many years 03:33 ago you and I were on the radio and we said, "I wonder 03:35 what we can do to reach the world with this message, 03:39 we want to make people healthy; we want to make them feel good. 03:42 I wonder what steps we can make." 03:43 And here, 3ABN came along and 3ABN welcomed 03:46 us here to do this program. 03:47 These programs are steps, they're measureable steps 03:51 that we're taking to do what we believe 03:53 God wants us to do, and that's kind of cool. 03:55 You know, and as people watch the programs and learn 03:58 one thing at a time, maybe they could incorporate 04:00 a step, look at the evidence see how they feel, 04:03 ask God to be the One that changes and see how they move. 04:06 And if they feel better, well maybe they can make 04:08 another step and these steps might be walking more, 04:12 and exercising - that's a very important thing. 04:15 And we talked about how much exercise we need a day, 04:18 and I talked to different people and a great article came up 04:21 that said we should get up and move every hour 04:25 no matter what we're doing. That's a step! 04:26 Yeah, a lot of people sit all day long. Yes 04:29 They sit in computer terminals. 04:30 You know, at least move around the room every hour. 04:33 That's very beneficial, that's movement. 04:35 We try to get people to walk up to 45 minutes 04:38 to an hour every day, that's total moving. 04:43 And we try to get them to walk in 6 minute intervals, okay, 04:46 because what 6 minutes does is you go faster - slower, 04:49 faster - slower. 04:51 When you go faster, it changes the diameter 04:53 of our blood vessels. Yes 04:54 We also make different factors that make the blood vessels 04:57 big or smaller, big or smaller. 04:59 A complex result of all these chemical reactions 05:02 is better blood supply and better health to our organs. 05:06 Exercise helps the brain, lowers the risks of heart 05:08 attacks, helps every single organ in our body, 05:11 so I can't emphasize how much a movement program helps us. 05:15 And in our world, the last 200 years, we don't move as much, 05:18 and as we don't move as much, we put stress on our body. 05:21 You know, Charles, if you just sit all day long that puts... 05:25 the blood can't leave your legs as good, your back has 05:28 lower back pain. 05:30 It changes the levels of insulin, glucose, 05:32 cortisol - all in your body, all these chemical reactions 05:35 are very complex, so just by sitting too long, 05:38 you can actually hurt your body. 05:40 That's a stressor - we talked about all the things 05:42 that we weren't designed to do. 05:43 We were never designed to sit all day, 05:45 and sit in the same position. 05:48 Our listeners and our viewers, right now, stand up. 05:50 Stand up right where you are, stand up... very good. 05:52 Stay standing for another minute or so 05:54 because we're trying to bring you a step 05:56 toward health, this is another step. 05:59 Stand up there, sort of move around the chair... 06:00 We'll wait for you, go ahead move around the chair. 06:02 There you go, moving around, looking good, looking good. 06:04 These are steps that we can make, steps literally, 06:08 and steps mentally and emotionally that we can make 06:12 toward that wonderful health that we all want. 06:15 Very good, okay, you can sit back down now. 06:16 They did that very well. You know, a lot of people 06:19 will walk more than they think and just by wearing 06:21 a pedometer, you keep track of your steps 06:22 and you realize that, "Hey, 06:24 I really do get my steps in at work." 06:26 Yeah, don't you feel better? 06:28 I feel better just knowing that you just did that. 06:29 Thank you viewer, I appreciate that. 06:31 Okay, frequently asked questions from the 06:33 heartwiseministries.org website... 06:36 "My family has lots of cancers.. Oh dear.. 06:38 any suggestions for lowering risk?" Yes 06:42 It's all about risk, isn't it? Yes 06:43 Well risk of cancer, you know, what I tell is do things 06:47 that we know that help prevent cancers. 06:50 If you have risk of skin cancer, 06:54 don't be too much exposure in the sun. 06:56 If you have a risk of lung cancer, 06:58 avoid cigarettes and exposures in the air. And secondhand. Yes 07:03 If you have a history of colon cancer, 07:04 you definitely want to avoid fats in your diet. 07:07 You want to eat a whole food plant-based diet. 07:09 In fact that diet lowers the risk of almost everything. 07:13 If you have a history of breast cancer, 07:16 you want to make sure you don't have extra weight, 07:18 you want to make sure you're on a 07:20 whole food plant-based diet. 07:22 All the things we talked about for heart disease, 07:24 also helps lower the risk of cancer. 07:26 Isn't it wonderful how God created these chemical pathways 07:30 and even though we don't understand them, 07:32 when we do those things, we reap great benefits. 07:35 And more than anything, if you have cancer, 07:37 get screened - get screened for cancer so 07:39 if they detect it early, that's once place where 07:41 modern medicine can help you. 07:43 If you have a skin cancer or melanoma, 07:44 if you find it early, you cut it out - you're cured. 07:47 So go for early detection as well. All right, very good. 07:50 "What are the natural treatments, 07:52 this person asks from the heartwiseministries.org website, 07:55 "what are the natural treatments for anxiety." Oh dear 07:59 Now anxiety and fear and phobias affect many people now. 08:05 And in fact, 1 in 6 people have some type of anxiety, 08:09 and it ramps up from there... 08:10 Anxieties, phobias, fears, post-traumatic stress, 08:14 you know, all those things increase the stress chemistry 08:17 that we've talked about, damages the body. 08:20 So how do you treat anxiety? 08:22 Unfortunately, a lot of people run for medication, 08:25 but the first thing I tell people is - in our brains, 08:29 our brain works a specific way, and most anxieties 08:32 comes from the part of the brain, the reptilian part 08:35 of the brain that just wants to stay alive. 08:37 And brains want to be happy; they want to feel safe, 08:41 and, of course, when they don't feel safe, 08:42 then it makes all these other chemicals, these reactions 08:45 that have these anxiety feelings. 08:47 So a couple of simple things is realizing, you know, 08:50 if you feel anxious about something, 08:51 is something really life-threatening or not? 08:54 A lot of people have anxiety just because they 08:56 overreact or take things personally. 08:59 And when you do feel anxiety, have some things uploaded 09:02 in your brain that you can do right away to lower that. 09:05 For instance, take 10 deep breaths and say a prayer. 09:10 "Come unto Me and I will give you rest." 09:13 Just go over that and try to relax your body. 09:15 Be thankful for 2 or 3 things. 09:17 Find something to laugh about. 09:19 And then one of the leading things that I recommend 09:22 comes from Philippians 4:6, "Be anxious about nothing" 09:27 So, God wants us not to be anxious, 09:30 He knew it was damaging and in the very next 09:31 verse, it says, "Pray." 09:33 Pray, prayer is getting back into that relationship. 09:36 Getting back in that which we 09:38 know has healing powers as well. 09:39 So those are some simple things to help with anxiety. 09:42 Of course, eating healthy foods, avoiding supplements, 09:45 avoiding things that cause inflammation in the body, 09:49 all those things can help. 09:50 When you're doing these things, 09:52 then that might help you overcome anxiety 09:54 so you don't have to take a pill, that kind of thing. 09:58 Exercise is also another great thing, 10:00 natural things that can do for anxiety. 10:03 I think exercise, going out for a walk, 10:05 is one of the most powerful things we can do 10:07 for feeling blue, a little anxious, you know, 10:08 just go out there and put your walking shoes on 10:11 and go for a nice, brisk walk for 10-15 minutes, 10:13 pretty amazing stuff and a lot cheaper than taking a pill 10:17 or going to see a doctor for that. 10:19 All right, let's talk about blood clots in the body... 10:22 "How do blood clots form in the body, 10:25 and what can we do about them?" 10:26 They just show up? Is that what happens? 10:28 No, they don't and there's usually a reason. 10:29 Blood clots in the heart usually come from an abnormal rhythm 10:32 like atrial fibrillation. 10:34 It also comes from a weak heart where parts of it 10:36 aren't moving and the blood stagnates. 10:38 Blood clots in the heart, of course, can stay in 10:40 the heart or worse yet, can be pumped in different places. 10:44 And, that's one form of clots. 10:45 That's clots in the arteries usually, comes from the heart. 10:50 Clots in the veins can also come from just not moving, 10:53 having venous insufficiency, when you don't move or sit 10:56 long in place, the blood doesn't move because you have 10:58 to move the valves. 11:00 The valves have to push the blood out of the legs. 11:02 When we sit for long periods of time, the valves which move the 11:07 blood in, don't do the job, the blood sits, 11:09 it can form blood clots. 11:11 The most dangerous blood clot we hear is called a 11:13 "pulmonary embolism." 11:14 That's where a clot comes up the veins, gets in the lungs; 11:17 that can even be fatal. 11:18 What do you do for people who are laying in bed 11:20 in the hospital or can't move very good? 11:21 We give them medicines to naturally thin out their blood. 11:23 We also put compression devices on that squeeze the legs 11:27 to simulate that. 11:28 There are other medical conditions, genetic things 11:31 that can make the blood clot 11:32 that we need blood thinners for, certain types of diseases, 11:35 cancer makes the blood clot more. 11:37 So all of these things form different blood clots, 11:41 and if you can find out what causes the clots, 11:43 sometimes you don't need to be on a medicine for it. 11:45 But a lot of times, if it's due to the heart, 11:48 you do have to do a medicine because usually 11:49 what's going on is sort of a permanent situation, 11:52 and it's always about risks and benefits. 11:55 "Is any medication safe?" I get that question a lot. 11:58 The answer to that is probably not. 12:00 It's all about risk and benefits. 12:02 Some have less risk than others. 12:04 Well, we're learning steps today, steps to health, 12:06 and one of the most important steps that we can take 12:08 as Christians is to talk to the Master Physician. 12:12 I'm going to do that on our return, 12:13 so stay right where you are. 12:20 You know, I've learned so much through the years by 12:23 answering people's questions because it has forced me 12:25 to learn things I might not look up. 12:28 So thank you for your questions and I hope today 12:30 you've learned something, and that some of your 12:32 questions have been answered. 12:33 Let's spend some time praying 12:35 for each other, let's bow our heads. 12:37 Heavenly Father, I want to thank You for 12:40 being a God that loves us and helps us find the answers 12:44 to life's tough questions and there might be someone 12:47 out there that needs You in a special way today, Father, 12:50 please be with them and help them to have healing 12:53 in the love that You have for them, Father. 12:55 And just thank each one of us for doing Your work 12:58 and we look forward for You coming again soon. 13:00 This is our humble prayer. Amen 13:03 If you might have questions that we didn't answer today, 13:06 I want to invite you to our website that is 13:08 heartwiseministries.org 13:11 We want to thank you for being a part of our ministry. 13:14 We also have a prayer team where 13:15 we're actively praying for each other. 13:17 So until next time, wishing you all of God's healing. |
