Welcome back to the program, I'm Charles Mills. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.80 We're here with cardiologist, James Marcum. 00:00:02.83\00:00:04.77 We're talking about health as we do on this program 00:00:04.80\00:00:07.70 every time and some of the frequently asked questions 00:00:07.74\00:00:09.74 that have come in to heartwiseministries.org 00:00:09.77\00:00:11.97 You've made it very clear, Dr. Marcum, 00:00:12.01\00:00:14.34 that the Bible has a lot of prescriptions for us, 00:00:14.38\00:00:16.71 and I've just chosen one here I want to swing by you 00:00:16.75\00:00:19.98 and see what you think, it's found in Psalm 37:23. 00:00:20.02\00:00:23.72 Open it up on the screen here and here's what it says: 00:00:23.75\00:00:25.75 There are 2 parts to this here that "The steps of a good man 00:00:33.03\00:00:35.76 are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in his way." 00:00:35.80\00:00:38.00 You've made it clear that if we are not delighted by what 00:00:38.03\00:00:41.40 we're doing, it's not going to be as effective 00:00:41.44\00:00:43.84 as it can be - am I on the right track here? 00:00:43.87\00:00:45.77 I think so, Charles, and that's another 00:00:45.81\00:00:47.48 wonderful text on the steps of the Lord. 00:00:47.51\00:00:50.21 And you know what, when I think about that text, 00:00:50.25\00:00:52.98 as we enter in a relationship with our God, 00:00:53.01\00:00:55.98 you know, we talked about doing things and 00:00:56.02\00:00:57.95 we don't do things on our own. 00:00:57.99\00:01:00.16 When we do things just on our own, that could be 00:01:00.19\00:01:03.49 stressful because that makes us selfish because we're 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.13 doing it for us, but when we surrender our lives to God, 00:01:06.16\00:01:10.00 He's the One that does the changes for us 00:01:10.03\00:01:12.10 because we said it and He can help us with the steps 00:01:12.13\00:01:14.97 that He wants us to take one-at-a-time, 00:01:15.00\00:01:17.24 sometimes He moves us, sometimes we're running, 00:01:17.27\00:01:19.47 sometimes we're moving slow, but He directs our 00:01:19.51\00:01:21.68 steps when we're in that relationship with Him, 00:01:21.71\00:01:24.08 and He delights in that. 00:01:24.11\00:01:25.95 He's happy about that, so I just think that's 00:01:25.98\00:01:28.82 another great text that shows us the valuable treatment 00:01:28.85\00:01:32.42 that comes from that relationship with God, 00:01:32.45\00:01:34.29 how He helps us to go to A to B, to B to C... 00:01:34.32\00:01:37.16 Well, not everyone... this nutrition thing is not so easy. 00:01:37.19\00:01:40.96 It takes some steps, and the same thing with our brain. 00:01:41.00\00:01:44.00 Getting our brain right and getting us back to the way 00:01:44.03\00:01:46.23 God wants to be, you know, creating a new mind, 00:01:46.27\00:01:48.64 that's not so easy, but He takes us in steps. 00:01:48.67\00:01:51.47 He didn't say - all at once. 00:01:51.51\00:01:53.07 He said there are steps in this relationship, 00:01:53.11\00:01:55.74 and He delights when we're making these steps. 00:01:55.78\00:01:58.18 So it's a wonderful text, Charles. 00:01:58.21\00:02:00.48 Now I know why you put this right here. 00:02:00.52\00:02:02.25 Let's talk about this Dr. Marcum. 00:02:02.28\00:02:03.92 You're talking about steps and how important they are. 00:02:03.95\00:02:06.96 When we start exercising, when we start making the 00:02:06.99\00:02:09.86 transition from where we are to where we want to be, 00:02:09.89\00:02:12.73 this little device here is kind of an important little device 00:02:12.76\00:02:15.60 that we use to measure our steps. 00:02:15.63\00:02:17.43 This is.. what is this called? 00:02:17.47\00:02:18.83 That's a pedometer. A pedometer, okay. 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.84 And you wear it on your belt and it keeps track 00:02:20.87\00:02:23.51 of the steps you take and it gives you all sorts of 00:02:23.54\00:02:25.67 information and it can turn that into distance 00:02:25.71\00:02:28.18 in kilometers or miles, but that really measures 00:02:28.21\00:02:30.71 how active you are and one of the most common questions 00:02:30.75\00:02:33.72 we get to the website is - 00:02:33.75\00:02:35.52 "How much exercise do I need each day." 00:02:35.55\00:02:37.69 So every time we take a step, this measures it. Yep 00:02:37.72\00:02:40.12 Is there any kind of measuring in the steps we're taking 00:02:40.16\00:02:43.32 to have a good relationship with God? 00:02:43.36\00:02:45.43 Is there any kind of pedometer we can have for that? 00:02:45.46\00:02:47.96 Yeah, there are lots of pedometers and, you know, 00:02:48.00\00:02:52.03 just look at the fruit, you know, look at the fruit. Yes 00:02:52.07\00:02:57.81 Look at the things that God has accomplished in your life. 00:02:57.84\00:03:01.44 Look at the evidence in your life. 00:03:01.48\00:03:03.31 You know, look back 5 years ago, 00:03:03.35\00:03:05.35 and I ask people to write a diary about you and God. Yes 00:03:05.38\00:03:08.85 And keep down the things where you've seen Him 00:03:08.88\00:03:11.05 lead in your life, whether it be radio programs 00:03:11.09\00:03:14.82 or a chance to reach people or a success that you might 00:03:14.86\00:03:17.69 have at work or opportunities to serve. 00:03:17.73\00:03:20.50 And as you see the way God has led you and look back, 00:03:20.53\00:03:22.96 you say, "Yes, sometimes it feels like I'm not making 00:03:23.00\00:03:25.47 many steps, but when I look back, I am making steps. 00:03:25.50\00:03:28.80 This program is a step as far as I'm concerned. Yeah 00:03:28.84\00:03:31.34 We are taking steps making these programs because many years 00:03:31.37\00:03:33.14 ago you and I were on the radio and we said, "I wonder 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.74 what we can do to reach the world with this message, 00:03:35.78\00:03:39.61 we want to make people healthy; we want to make them feel good. 00:03:39.65\00:03:42.22 I wonder what steps we can make." 00:03:42.25\00:03:43.72 And here, 3ABN came along and 3ABN welcomed 00:03:43.75\00:03:46.49 us here to do this program. 00:03:46.52\00:03:47.86 These programs are steps, they're measureable steps 00:03:47.89\00:03:51.59 that we're taking to do what we believe 00:03:51.63\00:03:53.76 God wants us to do, and that's kind of cool. 00:03:53.80\00:03:55.16 You know, and as people watch the programs and learn 00:03:55.20\00:03:58.53 one thing at a time, maybe they could incorporate 00:03:58.57\00:04:00.84 a step, look at the evidence see how they feel, 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.37 ask God to be the One that changes and see how they move. 00:04:03.41\00:04:06.27 And if they feel better, well maybe they can make 00:04:06.31\00:04:08.34 another step and these steps might be walking more, 00:04:08.38\00:04:12.21 and exercising - that's a very important thing. 00:04:12.25\00:04:15.25 And we talked about how much exercise we need a day, 00:04:15.28\00:04:18.55 and I talked to different people and a great article came up 00:04:18.59\00:04:21.96 that said we should get up and move every hour 00:04:21.99\00:04:25.43 no matter what we're doing. That's a step! 00:04:25.46\00:04:26.90 Yeah, a lot of people sit all day long. Yes 00:04:26.93\00:04:29.13 They sit in computer terminals. 00:04:29.16\00:04:30.90 You know, at least move around the room every hour. 00:04:30.93\00:04:33.23 That's very beneficial, that's movement. 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.47 We try to get people to walk up to 45 minutes 00:04:35.50\00:04:38.94 to an hour every day, that's total moving. 00:04:38.97\00:04:43.01 And we try to get them to walk in 6 minute intervals, okay, 00:04:43.04\00:04:46.88 because what 6 minutes does is you go faster - slower, 00:04:46.92\00:04:49.68 faster - slower. 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.05 When you go faster, it changes the diameter 00:04:51.09\00:04:53.46 of our blood vessels. Yes 00:04:53.49\00:04:54.82 We also make different factors that make the blood vessels 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.03 big or smaller, big or smaller. 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.19 A complex result of all these chemical reactions 00:04:59.23\00:05:02.60 is better blood supply and better health to our organs. 00:05:02.63\00:05:06.13 Exercise helps the brain, lowers the risks of heart 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.67 attacks, helps every single organ in our body, 00:05:08.70\00:05:11.37 so I can't emphasize how much a movement program helps us. 00:05:11.41\00:05:15.01 And in our world, the last 200 years, we don't move as much, 00:05:15.04\00:05:18.48 and as we don't move as much, we put stress on our body. 00:05:18.51\00:05:21.85 You know, Charles, if you just sit all day long that puts... 00:05:21.88\00:05:25.25 the blood can't leave your legs as good, your back has 00:05:25.29\00:05:28.49 lower back pain. 00:05:28.52\00:05:30.16 It changes the levels of insulin, glucose, 00:05:30.19\00:05:32.89 cortisol - all in your body, all these chemical reactions 00:05:32.93\00:05:35.70 are very complex, so just by sitting too long, 00:05:35.73\00:05:38.77 you can actually hurt your body. 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.14 That's a stressor - we talked about all the things 00:05:40.17\00:05:42.24 that we weren't designed to do. 00:05:42.27\00:05:43.61 We were never designed to sit all day, 00:05:43.64\00:05:45.74 and sit in the same position. 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.94 Our listeners and our viewers, right now, stand up. 00:05:48.01\00:05:50.25 Stand up right where you are, stand up... very good. 00:05:50.28\00:05:52.48 Stay standing for another minute or so 00:05:52.51\00:05:54.85 because we're trying to bring you a step 00:05:54.88\00:05:56.95 toward health, this is another step. 00:05:56.99\00:05:58.99 Stand up there, sort of move around the chair... 00:05:59.02\00:06:00.82 We'll wait for you, go ahead move around the chair. 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.59 There you go, moving around, looking good, looking good. 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.89 These are steps that we can make, steps literally, 00:06:04.93\00:06:08.50 and steps mentally and emotionally that we can make 00:06:08.53\00:06:12.83 toward that wonderful health that we all want. 00:06:12.87\00:06:15.04 Very good, okay, you can sit back down now. 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.91 They did that very well. You know, a lot of people 00:06:16.94\00:06:18.97 will walk more than they think and just by wearing 00:06:19.01\00:06:20.98 a pedometer, you keep track of your steps 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.74 and you realize that, "Hey, 00:06:22.78\00:06:24.11 I really do get my steps in at work." 00:06:24.15\00:06:26.75 Yeah, don't you feel better? 00:06:26.78\00:06:28.12 I feel better just knowing that you just did that. 00:06:28.15\00:06:29.72 Thank you viewer, I appreciate that. 00:06:29.75\00:06:31.09 Okay, frequently asked questions from the 00:06:31.12\00:06:33.09 heartwiseministries.org website... 00:06:33.12\00:06:36.52 "My family has lots of cancers.. Oh dear.. 00:06:36.56\00:06:38.96 any suggestions for lowering risk?" Yes 00:06:38.99\00:06:42.30 It's all about risk, isn't it? Yes 00:06:42.33\00:06:43.67 Well risk of cancer, you know, what I tell is do things 00:06:43.70\00:06:47.07 that we know that help prevent cancers. 00:06:47.10\00:06:50.17 If you have risk of skin cancer, 00:06:50.21\00:06:54.51 don't be too much exposure in the sun. 00:06:54.54\00:06:56.78 If you have a risk of lung cancer, 00:06:56.81\00:06:58.45 avoid cigarettes and exposures in the air. And secondhand. Yes 00:06:58.48\00:07:02.98 If you have a history of colon cancer, 00:07:03.02\00:07:04.65 you definitely want to avoid fats in your diet. 00:07:04.69\00:07:07.22 You want to eat a whole food plant-based diet. 00:07:07.26\00:07:09.42 In fact that diet lowers the risk of almost everything. 00:07:09.46\00:07:13.56 If you have a history of breast cancer, 00:07:13.60\00:07:16.03 you want to make sure you don't have extra weight, 00:07:16.06\00:07:18.80 you want to make sure you're on a 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.17 whole food plant-based diet. 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.34 All the things we talked about for heart disease, 00:07:22.37\00:07:24.81 also helps lower the risk of cancer. 00:07:24.84\00:07:26.68 Isn't it wonderful how God created these chemical pathways 00:07:26.71\00:07:30.81 and even though we don't understand them, 00:07:30.85\00:07:32.31 when we do those things, we reap great benefits. 00:07:32.35\00:07:35.02 And more than anything, if you have cancer, 00:07:35.05\00:07:37.15 get screened - get screened for cancer so 00:07:37.19\00:07:39.62 if they detect it early, that's once place where 00:07:39.65\00:07:41.82 modern medicine can help you. 00:07:41.86\00:07:43.19 If you have a skin cancer or melanoma, 00:07:43.22\00:07:44.69 if you find it early, you cut it out - you're cured. 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.20 So go for early detection as well. All right, very good. 00:07:47.23\00:07:50.27 "What are the natural treatments, 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.63 this person asks from the heartwiseministries.org website, 00:07:52.67\00:07:55.74 "what are the natural treatments for anxiety." Oh dear 00:07:55.77\00:07:59.94 Now anxiety and fear and phobias affect many people now. 00:07:59.97\00:08:05.21 And in fact, 1 in 6 people have some type of anxiety, 00:08:05.25\00:08:09.12 and it ramps up from there... 00:08:09.15\00:08:10.69 Anxieties, phobias, fears, post-traumatic stress, 00:08:10.72\00:08:14.76 you know, all those things increase the stress chemistry 00:08:14.79\00:08:17.36 that we've talked about, damages the body. 00:08:17.39\00:08:20.76 So how do you treat anxiety? 00:08:20.80\00:08:22.20 Unfortunately, a lot of people run for medication, 00:08:22.23\00:08:25.63 but the first thing I tell people is - in our brains, 00:08:25.67\00:08:29.00 our brain works a specific way, and most anxieties 00:08:29.04\00:08:32.47 comes from the part of the brain, the reptilian part 00:08:32.51\00:08:35.48 of the brain that just wants to stay alive. 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.38 And brains want to be happy; they want to feel safe, 00:08:37.41\00:08:41.02 and, of course, when they don't feel safe, 00:08:41.05\00:08:42.92 then it makes all these other chemicals, these reactions 00:08:42.95\00:08:45.35 that have these anxiety feelings. 00:08:45.39\00:08:47.16 So a couple of simple things is realizing, you know, 00:08:47.19\00:08:50.19 if you feel anxious about something, 00:08:50.23\00:08:51.89 is something really life-threatening or not? 00:08:51.93\00:08:54.60 A lot of people have anxiety just because they 00:08:54.63\00:08:56.46 overreact or take things personally. 00:08:56.50\00:08:59.57 And when you do feel anxiety, have some things uploaded 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.30 in your brain that you can do right away to lower that. 00:09:02.34\00:09:05.44 For instance, take 10 deep breaths and say a prayer. 00:09:05.47\00:09:10.65 "Come unto Me and I will give you rest." 00:09:10.68\00:09:13.38 Just go over that and try to relax your body. 00:09:13.42\00:09:15.65 Be thankful for 2 or 3 things. 00:09:15.68\00:09:17.69 Find something to laugh about. 00:09:17.72\00:09:19.49 And then one of the leading things that I recommend 00:09:19.52\00:09:22.52 comes from Philippians 4:6, "Be anxious about nothing" 00:09:22.56\00:09:27.83 So, God wants us not to be anxious, 00:09:27.86\00:09:30.00 He knew it was damaging and in the very next 00:09:30.03\00:09:31.47 verse, it says, "Pray." 00:09:31.50\00:09:33.47 Pray, prayer is getting back into that relationship. 00:09:33.50\00:09:36.71 Getting back in that which we 00:09:36.74\00:09:38.21 know has healing powers as well. 00:09:38.24\00:09:39.87 So those are some simple things to help with anxiety. 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.58 Of course, eating healthy foods, avoiding supplements, 00:09:42.61\00:09:45.81 avoiding things that cause inflammation in the body, 00:09:45.85\00:09:49.02 all those things can help. 00:09:49.05\00:09:50.55 When you're doing these things, 00:09:50.59\00:09:51.99 then that might help you overcome anxiety 00:09:52.02\00:09:54.72 so you don't have to take a pill, that kind of thing. 00:09:54.76\00:09:58.39 Exercise is also another great thing, 00:09:58.43\00:10:00.73 natural things that can do for anxiety. 00:10:00.76\00:10:03.63 I think exercise, going out for a walk, 00:10:03.67\00:10:05.43 is one of the most powerful things we can do 00:10:05.47\00:10:07.07 for feeling blue, a little anxious, you know, 00:10:07.10\00:10:08.84 just go out there and put your walking shoes on 00:10:08.87\00:10:11.64 and go for a nice, brisk walk for 10-15 minutes, 00:10:11.67\00:10:13.91 pretty amazing stuff and a lot cheaper than taking a pill 00:10:13.94\00:10:17.71 or going to see a doctor for that. 00:10:17.75\00:10:19.58 All right, let's talk about blood clots in the body... 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.68 "How do blood clots form in the body, 00:10:22.72\00:10:25.22 and what can we do about them?" 00:10:25.25\00:10:26.59 They just show up? Is that what happens? 00:10:26.62\00:10:27.99 No, they don't and there's usually a reason. 00:10:28.02\00:10:29.62 Blood clots in the heart usually come from an abnormal rhythm 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.46 like atrial fibrillation. 00:10:32.49\00:10:34.20 It also comes from a weak heart where parts of it 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.56 aren't moving and the blood stagnates. 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.83 Blood clots in the heart, of course, can stay in 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.80 the heart or worse yet, can be pumped in different places. 00:10:40.84\00:10:44.17 And, that's one form of clots. 00:10:44.21\00:10:45.94 That's clots in the arteries usually, comes from the heart. 00:10:45.97\00:10:50.05 Clots in the veins can also come from just not moving, 00:10:50.08\00:10:53.92 having venous insufficiency, when you don't move or sit 00:10:53.95\00:10:56.42 long in place, the blood doesn't move because you have 00:10:56.45\00:10:58.89 to move the valves. 00:10:58.92\00:11:00.26 The valves have to push the blood out of the legs. 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.66 When we sit for long periods of time, the valves which move the 00:11:02.69\00:11:06.96 blood in, don't do the job, the blood sits, 00:11:07.00\00:11:09.66 it can form blood clots. 00:11:09.70\00:11:11.03 The most dangerous blood clot we hear is called a 00:11:11.07\00:11:13.27 "pulmonary embolism." 00:11:13.30\00:11:14.64 That's where a clot comes up the veins, gets in the lungs; 00:11:14.67\00:11:17.11 that can even be fatal. 00:11:17.14\00:11:18.54 What do you do for people who are laying in bed 00:11:18.57\00:11:19.97 in the hospital or can't move very good? 00:11:20.01\00:11:21.34 We give them medicines to naturally thin out their blood. 00:11:21.38\00:11:23.85 We also put compression devices on that squeeze the legs 00:11:23.88\00:11:27.45 to simulate that. 00:11:27.48\00:11:28.82 There are other medical conditions, genetic things 00:11:28.85\00:11:31.32 that can make the blood clot 00:11:31.35\00:11:32.75 that we need blood thinners for, certain types of diseases, 00:11:32.79\00:11:35.76 cancer makes the blood clot more. 00:11:35.79\00:11:37.96 So all of these things form different blood clots, 00:11:37.99\00:11:40.96 and if you can find out what causes the clots, 00:11:41.00\00:11:43.67 sometimes you don't need to be on a medicine for it. 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.90 But a lot of times, if it's due to the heart, 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.07 you do have to do a medicine because usually 00:11:48.10\00:11:49.80 what's going on is sort of a permanent situation, 00:11:49.84\00:11:52.71 and it's always about risks and benefits. 00:11:52.74\00:11:55.21 "Is any medication safe?" I get that question a lot. 00:11:55.24\00:11:58.71 The answer to that is probably not. 00:11:58.75\00:12:00.65 It's all about risk and benefits. 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.55 Some have less risk than others. 00:12:02.58\00:12:04.22 Well, we're learning steps today, steps to health, 00:12:04.25\00:12:06.52 and one of the most important steps that we can take 00:12:06.55\00:12:08.79 as Christians is to talk to the Master Physician. 00:12:08.82\00:12:12.39 I'm going to do that on our return, 00:12:12.43\00:12:13.76 so stay right where you are. 00:12:13.80\00:12:15.13 You know, I've learned so much through the years by 00:12:20.94\00:12:23.20 answering people's questions because it has forced me 00:12:23.24\00:12:25.91 to learn things I might not look up. 00:12:25.94\00:12:28.24 So thank you for your questions and I hope today 00:12:28.28\00:12:30.88 you've learned something, and that some of your 00:12:30.91\00:12:32.25 questions have been answered. 00:12:32.28\00:12:33.65 Let's spend some time praying 00:12:33.68\00:12:35.25 for each other, let's bow our heads. 00:12:35.28\00:12:37.92 Heavenly Father, I want to thank You for 00:12:37.95\00:12:40.59 being a God that loves us and helps us find the answers 00:12:40.62\00:12:44.36 to life's tough questions and there might be someone 00:12:44.39\00:12:47.20 out there that needs You in a special way today, Father, 00:12:47.23\00:12:50.00 please be with them and help them to have healing 00:12:50.03\00:12:53.23 in the love that You have for them, Father. 00:12:53.27\00:12:55.50 And just thank each one of us for doing Your work 00:12:55.54\00:12:58.37 and we look forward for You coming again soon. 00:12:58.41\00:13:00.61 This is our humble prayer. Amen 00:13:00.64\00:13:03.28 If you might have questions that we didn't answer today, 00:13:03.31\00:13:06.21 I want to invite you to our website that is 00:13:06.25\00:13:08.58 heartwiseministries.org 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.52 We want to thank you for being a part of our ministry. 00:13:11.55\00:13:14.16 We also have a prayer team where 00:13:14.19\00:13:15.72 we're actively praying for each other. 00:13:15.76\00:13:17.89 So until next time, wishing you all of God's healing. 00:13:17.93\00:13:21.73
