This is amazing... 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 You know, we're talking about heart disease, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 and sometimes you have to look at the big picture, 00:00:04.10\00:00:05.73 like with the telescope; and sometimes you have 00:00:05.77\00:00:07.80 to look at the little picture, like the microscope. 00:00:07.84\00:00:10.01 And Dr. Marcum, we are looking at the big picture here 00:00:10.04\00:00:13.11 of someone who says that they had heart attack-like 00:00:13.14\00:00:17.48 symptoms last year. 00:00:17.51\00:00:19.25 How do they know if it was a heart attack? 00:00:19.28\00:00:21.05 And said, "I had pain that felt like a heart attack 00:00:21.08\00:00:24.12 last year - did I have one?" 00:00:24.15\00:00:25.49 Yeah, and people come to the office all the time wanting 00:00:25.52\00:00:28.66 to know whether they've had a heart attack. 00:00:28.69\00:00:30.66 They had a symptom maybe and we can do some tests to tell that. 00:00:30.73\00:00:33.13 One of the tests we can do is we can do a sound wave test 00:00:33.60\00:00:36.80 of the heart to see if all the heart is beating correctly. 00:00:36.83\00:00:39.23 Heart attack means that part of the heart has died. 00:00:39.27\00:00:41.77 It's not working, so we can look a sound wave 00:00:41.80\00:00:44.14 test and if all the heart is moving, I can tell them 00:00:44.17\00:00:46.04 they haven't had a heart attack. 00:00:46.07\00:00:47.41 When one part is just sitting there and not doing anything... 00:00:47.44\00:00:49.18 They've had a heart attack. All right, okay 00:00:49.21\00:00:50.68 And sometimes I can look at the EKG, 00:00:50.71\00:00:52.68 and tell them if they've had a heart attack. 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.58 We have nuclear material that will only go into living heart 00:00:54.62\00:00:58.32 and we've can tell if they've had a heart attack. 00:00:58.35\00:01:00.06 So there's lots of different ways with modern technology 00:01:00.09\00:01:02.49 I can tell whether that symptom they had last week or last year 00:01:02.52\00:01:05.79 if they've had a heart attack. 00:01:05.83\00:01:07.40 So there is lots of technology we can do to let us know. 00:01:07.43\00:01:12.07 Now, we have some biblical technology you would like 00:01:12.10\00:01:14.04 to share with us as well. Oh, I love biblical 00:01:14.07\00:01:15.64 technology - it is my favorite. 00:01:15.67\00:01:17.21 We're going to bring our text 00:01:17.24\00:01:18.57 up on the screen in just a moment here. 00:01:18.61\00:01:20.11 It is Matthew 11:28, and we've talked about this 00:01:20.14\00:01:24.25 on the program, one of the best treatments 00:01:24.28\00:01:27.22 and prevention of heart attack is something called "rest." 00:01:27.25\00:01:31.45 Let's put it up on the screen, here we go... 00:01:31.49\00:01:32.92 Why is rest so important that God said that 00:01:38.99\00:01:42.60 He wants to give it to us? 00:01:42.63\00:01:43.97 Well you know, we all know if you broke your arm 00:01:44.00\00:01:46.77 throwing fast balls, you wouldn't keep 00:01:46.80\00:01:49.10 throwing fast balls, you would rest it. 00:01:49.14\00:01:50.97 There is scientific evidence that there's healing 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.64 that comes from rest. 00:01:53.68\00:01:55.51 And let's think about this... In that first part of the text, 00:01:55.54\00:01:58.35 Charles, it talks a lot about what I would describe as stress! 00:01:58.38\00:02:02.02 ... All your worry, the mental stress especially. 00:02:02.05\00:02:05.12 And then at the end it gives 00:02:05.15\00:02:06.49 the solution to stress and that's rest. 00:02:06.52\00:02:09.96 So God gave us rest as a way of dealing with stress, 00:02:09.99\00:02:14.10 as the treatment for stress is rest. 00:02:14.13\00:02:16.13 We've talked about all these stressors, 00:02:16.16\00:02:17.93 well, one of the treatments is rest - to rest the body. 00:02:17.97\00:02:21.30 How many people really understand how to rest? 00:02:21.34\00:02:24.74 The God of the universe has a rest one day a week; 00:02:24.77\00:02:28.11 teaches us how to rest at night. 00:02:28.14\00:02:30.45 It's very important that we do that well. 00:02:30.48\00:02:32.88 We now know that people that know how to rest well, 00:02:32.91\00:02:35.52 that have a rest one day a week that rest well at night, 00:02:35.55\00:02:38.15 guess what happens to the stress chemistry? 00:02:38.19\00:02:40.46 It gets better, it improves, 00:02:40.49\00:02:43.43 the adrenalin level, the cortisol level, 00:02:43.46\00:02:45.39 the inflammation comes down. 00:02:45.43\00:02:47.00 So one of the treatments for stress is rest, 00:02:47.03\00:02:50.77 and God knew this in His infinite wisdom, He said, 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.23 "When you're stressed, come to Me and I will give you rest." 00:02:53.27\00:02:56.30 So worshipping, resting - worship is rest 00:02:56.34\00:02:59.74 when it's done in God, so we have the treatment 00:02:59.77\00:03:02.78 for stress might be a Sabbath rest. Yes 00:03:02.81\00:03:05.75 A treatment for stress might be a nightly rest. 00:03:05.78\00:03:08.98 So a treatment for that and it changes the chemistry, 00:03:09.02\00:03:11.52 even though we don't understand all the specific mechanisms.? 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.42 Whatever it takes to change the chemistry for the good, 00:03:14.46\00:03:17.09 that is what we call "rest." Right 00:03:17.13\00:03:19.09 But God says, "Come unto Me," so there's something about 00:03:19.13\00:03:21.80 coming to God that is in the process of resting. 00:03:21.83\00:03:25.20 When we come to God, He gives us that peace, 00:03:25.23\00:03:27.87 that understanding, turns down these chemistries. 00:03:27.90\00:03:31.11 He gives us that rest which negates some of all that 00:03:31.14\00:03:34.64 stress that's coming on our body all the time. 00:03:34.68\00:03:36.68 So when a person comes to me stressed out, 00:03:36.71\00:03:38.31 I say, "Listen, go to God, rest in Him, 00:03:38.35\00:03:40.88 learn how to rest one day day a week, 00:03:40.92\00:03:42.75 learn how to rest in the nights, there's some treatment in that 00:03:42.78\00:03:46.12 in worshipping and all this." 00:03:46.15\00:03:47.79 That's a great test, it's a great treatment. 00:03:47.82\00:03:50.26 it's a great biblical technology. 00:03:50.29\00:03:52.03 "Come to me all who are weary and burdened 00:03:52.06\00:03:54.66 and I will change your chemistry." 00:03:54.70\00:03:56.03 And I will help lower the risk of heart attacks, 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.50 I will help treat your heart attacks, 00:03:58.53\00:04:00.30 I will help all these things. 00:04:00.34\00:04:01.67 Okay, here's a question from heartwiseministries.org 00:04:01.70\00:04:04.74 This is great stuff, this is life-saving stuff! 00:04:04.77\00:04:07.38 What is the difference between... 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.84 Well now, I've heard this said "an-gi-na" or "angina." 00:04:08.88\00:04:12.28 Yeah - "angina." Angina 00:04:12.31\00:04:13.72 Ah, between angina and chest pain. Okay 00:04:13.75\00:04:15.58 Well chest pain - many things can cause chest pain 00:04:15.62\00:04:18.75 including a heart attack. 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.66 You know, it might be that you pulled a muscle, 00:04:20.69\00:04:22.26 and if I press on it and you go "Owe, it hurts," 00:04:22.29\00:04:24.16 I'm going to say, "That was the muscles." 00:04:24.19\00:04:25.53 If you eat some food and some acid comes up, 00:04:25.56\00:04:28.00 "I'm going to say, "That's related to acid reflux." 00:04:28.03\00:04:30.57 It's in the area of the heart, 00:04:30.60\00:04:31.93 but may not necessarily be the heart. 00:04:31.97\00:04:33.30 So chest pain can be the heart, 00:04:33.34\00:04:34.67 but it could be many other things. 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.04 If you take a deep breath and it hurts, 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.41 that could be related to the lungs or pleuritis. 00:04:37.44\00:04:40.44 Now angina really means that 00:04:40.48\00:04:43.65 the pain is coming from the heart. 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.01 So, if you walk up a hill, it hurts; 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.98 you stop and it goes away, 00:04:47.02\00:04:48.72 that's a characteristic of angina. 00:04:48.75\00:04:50.69 So angina really means chest pain from the heart, 00:04:50.72\00:04:53.39 but chest pain, in general, can be sort of 00:04:53.42\00:04:55.92 lots of different things can cause it from, 00:04:55.96\00:04:58.26 you know, a lot of people have different types of... 00:04:58.29\00:05:01.36 You know, I saw a lady the other day that had shingles. 00:05:01.40\00:05:04.37 Shingles caused her chest pain and she thought it was 00:05:04.40\00:05:06.77 a heart attack and it ended up 00:05:06.80\00:05:08.14 turning into a rash from shingles. 00:05:08.17\00:05:09.50 Lots of time, it's from the stomach, 00:05:09.54\00:05:11.07 and if after you eat, you have the pain, 00:05:11.11\00:05:13.74 you know, that could be the heart, 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.11 but it could be the stomach as well. 00:05:15.14\00:05:16.75 If someone hits you in the chest, 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.11 that's chest pain that's coming from hitting you in the chest. 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.12 So chest pain, lots of different reasons including the heart, 00:05:20.15\00:05:23.39 but angina is more specific referring to the heart. 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.22 If someone hits you hard enough in the chest, 00:05:26.25\00:05:28.66 can you have a heart attack from that hit? 00:05:28.69\00:05:30.13 Yes you can, but it's very rare especially if they 00:05:30.16\00:05:32.86 hit you over the artery, but you can actually bruise 00:05:32.89\00:05:35.53 the heart and we call that a contusion. 00:05:35.56\00:05:37.60 We most frequently see contusions of the heart 00:05:37.63\00:05:40.30 in automobile accidents... And they hit the steering wheel. 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.67 Yeah, they hit it so hard that it actually bruises the heart. 00:05:42.70\00:05:45.77 We do a sound wave test and we see the heart 00:05:45.81\00:05:47.81 has been bruised, it's not moving well. 00:05:47.84\00:05:49.88 And you have said often on this program that 00:05:49.91\00:05:52.41 pain that feels like a heart attack is serious 00:05:52.45\00:05:56.15 and we need to have it looked at. 00:05:56.18\00:05:57.52 So, we should not try to dismiss 00:05:57.55\00:05:59.42 a pain we have in our chest; well, it must be a bruising, 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.86 it must be something else. Go see a doctor, you say. 00:06:01.89\00:06:04.96 Yeah, and I tell people, any symptom above the waist 00:06:04.99\00:06:08.13 you need to at least think that "could this be my heart," 00:06:08.16\00:06:10.87 and a symptom that gets worse when you do things 00:06:10.90\00:06:13.44 leads me to thinking it's heart, 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.14 but what is the definition of a symptom, Charles, 00:06:15.17\00:06:17.67 that's very important for our audience. 00:06:17.71\00:06:19.11 Anything that you feel that's not right, 00:06:19.14\00:06:22.11 we could classify as a symptom. 00:06:22.14\00:06:23.78 And if I'm having a symptom, 00:06:23.81\00:06:25.21 things in my body that I don't feel right, 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.38 I want to investigate that, find out what it is, 00:06:27.42\00:06:30.35 at least make sure it's nothing deadly like a heart attack, 00:06:30.39\00:06:33.79 at least have that looked at because we want that to be 00:06:33.82\00:06:36.69 evaluated right away because time is very important 00:06:36.73\00:06:39.49 if you're having chest pain. 00:06:39.53\00:06:40.86 All right, okay, very good. 00:06:40.90\00:06:42.23 Another question from heartwiseministries.org 00:06:42.26\00:06:45.53 "I had a corporate physical and they did a calcium score, 00:06:45.57\00:06:50.64 what does that tell you?" 00:06:50.67\00:06:52.11 Yeah, a lot of people are having these corporate physicals 00:06:52.14\00:06:55.41 and to me, honestly, calcium is just another 00:06:55.44\00:06:58.48 measurement of risk. 00:06:58.51\00:06:59.91 The higher the calcium score, the more likely you have 00:06:59.95\00:07:03.18 coronary disease, the higher the chance and it raises 00:07:03.22\00:07:06.12 your risk of a heart attack. 00:07:06.15\00:07:07.66 But I can pretty much tell that just by talking to someone. 00:07:07.69\00:07:10.36 How do you do that? 00:07:10.43\00:07:11.86 Well, if a person says, "I don't eat well, 00:07:11.89\00:07:14.36 I'm under lots of stress," I can pretty much tell that they 00:07:14.40\00:07:18.53 have a high chance of having heart disease. 00:07:18.57\00:07:21.00 And, whether they have a high calcium score, 00:07:21.04\00:07:23.87 the treatment is pretty much the same. 00:07:23.91\00:07:25.34 I mean, high calcium, did they drink too much milk? 00:07:25.37\00:07:27.11 Where is this calcium coming from? 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.48 Well, calcium comes from calcifications 00:07:28.51\00:07:30.28 in the arteries of the heart. I got ya, I got ya. 00:07:30.31\00:07:32.45 You know calcifications and oxidation 00:07:32.48\00:07:34.52 is a process that creates calcium. 00:07:34.55\00:07:36.35 But I treat everyone the same unless they're having symptoms. 00:07:36.38\00:07:39.49 I want to put the person with the high calcium score 00:07:39.52\00:07:41.66 on a whole food plant-based diet, 00:07:41.69\00:07:43.53 I'm going to lower the stress. 00:07:43.56\00:07:45.13 I want to make sure their blood pressure; 00:07:45.16\00:07:46.49 they don't have diabetes, things of that nature. 00:07:46.53\00:07:48.80 I want to make sure their cholesterol is really good. 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.70 Those of the things I want to do 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.20 if they have a high calcium score, the exact same things 00:07:52.23\00:07:55.00 I would do if they said, "My dad had a heart attack, 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.01 I don't eat a good diet," those types of things. 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.01 So the calcium score is just another tool that we can tell 00:08:00.04\00:08:04.18 if a person is at high risk for coronary disease. 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.68 Is it possible to have a heart attack without pain? 00:08:06.72\00:08:09.25 Yes it is. Really? 00:08:09.28\00:08:11.02 Yeah, and we can have a heart attack without pain. 00:08:11.05\00:08:14.29 We mainly see that in people that have diabetes, 00:08:14.32\00:08:17.16 that their nerves might be damaged. 00:08:17.19\00:08:19.36 We also see that in people that are older, 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.83 and some women - they have atypical symptoms, 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.43 but usually when you ask them if they've had a heart attack, 00:08:24.47\00:08:28.30 even if they don't have pain, there's something else 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.41 that didn't feel right... extreme fatigue, 00:08:30.44\00:08:32.64 extreme shortness of breath, a feeling of ill-being. 00:08:32.67\00:08:36.04 They usually at least describe something that's "not right" 00:08:36.08\00:08:39.08 that we could describe as a symptom. 00:08:39.11\00:08:41.12 We did a show not too long ago, Dr. Marcum, 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.32 on screening - a very important topic, and you said that 00:08:43.35\00:08:46.62 we need to become self-screeners. 00:08:46.65\00:08:49.96 We need to start learning how to look at our lives 00:08:49.99\00:08:54.30 and find those things in our lives that are indicators 00:08:54.33\00:08:58.07 that we are at a high risk for heart disease. 00:08:58.10\00:08:59.97 And I thought maybe on this program where we're talking 00:09:00.00\00:09:02.17 about heart disease and some of the symptoms, whatnot, 00:09:02.20\00:09:04.51 what are some of the ways that we can self-screen ourselves, 00:09:04.54\00:09:08.64 and that will give us the indication that we might be 00:09:08.68\00:09:11.75 heading down a rocky road here? 00:09:11.78\00:09:13.95 Well the first thing I would ask people is... 00:09:13.98\00:09:15.78 Are they having feelings above the waist that are abnormal? 00:09:15.82\00:09:19.15 And if they're not sure, go for a walk real 00:09:19.19\00:09:21.62 fast and see how you feel. 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.36 Go for a fast walk and see how you feel. 00:09:23.39\00:09:26.29 If everything sort of feels pretty good, 00:09:26.33\00:09:28.66 then chances are you don't have active disease. Okay 00:09:28.70\00:09:31.73 Then the next thing I would look at is... Do you have risks? 00:09:31.77\00:09:34.74 You know, are you a person that has had a family history 00:09:34.77\00:09:37.51 that would put you at genetic risk? 00:09:37.54\00:09:39.47 Do you eat a poor diet, are you under lots of stress 00:09:39.51\00:09:43.21 that would raise your risk of having heart disease... 00:09:43.24\00:09:45.71 Poor diet! That's a problem, Dr. Marcum, 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.35 some people say I eat a wonderful diet, 00:09:47.38\00:09:49.08 but we know better! Yeah 00:09:49.12\00:09:51.15 When you say "poor diet" on this program to these people 00:09:51.19\00:09:54.56 listening right here, what do you mean by a "poor diet?" 00:09:54.59\00:09:58.79 Well, a diet that's sort of high in fat, high in protein, 00:09:58.83\00:10:03.03 Remember God made us to eat fruits, vegetables 00:10:03.06\00:10:05.93 nuts and grains and the more things we eat from animals 00:10:05.97\00:10:08.74 whether that be eggs, cheese, milk, all those products, 00:10:08.77\00:10:12.41 the dairy products, all of those things raise 00:10:12.44\00:10:15.31 our risk of having heart disease. 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.75 Not only that, but diet would include water, 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.82 the things we drink and a lot of people... 00:10:20.85\00:10:23.89 You know, processed foods are going to raise our risk, 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.55 and a lot of people don't even realize that because we're 00:10:26.59\00:10:28.86 taught that this is good or this is good. 00:10:28.89\00:10:31.03 So I tell them, "No, the literature 00:10:31.06\00:10:33.16 says this is not good." 00:10:33.19\00:10:34.53 And the advertisement says, "All natural, it's heart-healthy 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.23 and all that stuff." Yes, you know what, 00:10:37.27\00:10:38.60 they really spin at their web. 00:10:38.63\00:10:40.87 They say, "Oh, we want to go to a low-fat diet." 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.04 Well low-fat is in the right direction, 00:10:43.07\00:10:45.17 but it's not the direction to go. 00:10:45.21\00:10:47.34 So I try to move my patients to a whole food plant-based diet. 00:10:47.38\00:10:51.48 That doesn't mean they don't eat anything else, 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.58 but that means the predominant food that they eat is real food. 00:10:53.62\00:10:57.82 You know, whole foods... instead of the potato chip, 00:10:57.85\00:11:00.56 eat the potato; instead of the corn chip, eat the corn. 00:11:00.59\00:11:04.23 So, instead of the raisin, eat the grape. 00:11:04.26\00:11:06.59 So try to eat real foods as a cornerstone for good nutrition. 00:11:06.63\00:11:10.23 Now some people say, "Well, can I have this or that." 00:11:10.27\00:11:12.33 Well, sometimes it might e okay to have some of this 00:11:12.37\00:11:15.64 if it's going to affect your happiness because remember, 00:11:15.67\00:11:18.61 a grumpy person is a stressed person - that's not good either. 00:11:18.64\00:11:20.14 A grumpy vegan is not going to be as a happy semi-vegetarian. 00:11:21.08\00:11:25.35 But what I've told people is that as they move to eating 00:11:25.38\00:11:28.82 healthier, the food that used to taste good 00:11:28.85\00:11:31.79 doesn't taste as good and they start finding substitutes 00:11:31.82\00:11:34.76 and their whole brain chemistry changes. 00:11:34.79\00:11:37.89 I think we have time for one more question here from 00:11:37.93\00:11:40.03 heartwiseministries.org 00:11:40.06\00:11:42.16 An EKG, "If we go have an EKG and it shows that 00:11:42.20\00:11:48.17 we're okay, are we home free?" 00:11:48.20\00:11:50.21 An EKG can be normal and you could 00:11:50.24\00:11:53.31 still have a heart attack. 00:11:53.34\00:11:54.68 Even though it tends to be smaller, in the hospital 00:11:54.71\00:11:57.21 have normal EKGs and that puts them at a lower risk, 00:11:57.25\00:11:59.71 but you can still have a heart attack with a pretty normal EKG 00:11:59.75\00:12:02.68 especially if it's in one of the smaller arteries. 00:12:02.72\00:12:05.72 I guess the take-home message here is - this is complicated 00:12:05.75\00:12:09.06 and we need to look at a number of areas, 00:12:09.09\00:12:11.33 a number of possibilities here, and we educate ourselves, 00:12:11.36\00:12:15.10 and we follow the plan that requires 00:12:15.13\00:12:17.80 us to look at all these things, then we can feel 00:12:17.83\00:12:19.93 pretty confident that what we're doing is going to help us. 00:12:19.97\00:12:22.37 One of the things that will help us most, of course, 00:12:22.40\00:12:24.34 is to talk to the Master Physician, 00:12:24.37\00:12:26.14 and we're going to do that on our return, 00:12:26.17\00:12:28.01 so everybody stay right where you are - healing on the way. 00:12:28.04\00:12:31.98 There's so much to know about coronary artery disease, 00:12:38.19\00:12:41.49 and we talked a little bit about it today and I hope you can 00:12:41.52\00:12:43.93 share this with some of your friends. 00:12:43.96\00:12:45.89 If you're having a symptom though, I want you to 00:12:45.93\00:12:47.50 get help right now and we want everyone to work on 00:12:47.53\00:12:50.57 improving their diets and improving their stress. 00:12:50.60\00:12:53.40 There might be someone out there that's suffering from 00:12:53.44\00:12:55.60 coronary artery disease and we want to let you know 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.34 that there's hope today for you. 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.34 So let's all pray together... 00:13:00.38\00:13:01.71 Father God, I want to thank You for the opportunity to serve You 00:13:01.74\00:13:06.75 and to let other people know that there is truth 00:13:06.78\00:13:09.42 in Your word, and that You want us to be healthy. 00:13:09.45\00:13:11.42 And the text we read today about eating good food 00:13:11.45\00:13:14.42 and having healthy lives is what we want, 00:13:14.46\00:13:17.13 and that this is a blessing that You want to give to us, Father. 00:13:17.16\00:13:19.83 And those that are out there that are sick today, 00:13:19.86\00:13:21.60 we want to pray for the healing, however You want to heal, Father 00:13:21.63\00:13:24.93 we want to trust You to do what is best in our lives. 00:13:24.97\00:13:27.64 And thank You for the ability to be here today 00:13:27.67\00:13:30.51 and to love each other and we want to thank You for 00:13:30.54\00:13:32.74 being our God, is my prayer... Amen 00:13:32.77\00:13:35.78 Thank you for joining us. 00:13:35.81\00:13:37.15 We will be back next time with a new topic. 00:13:37.18\00:13:40.18 We want to wish you the best of health. 00:13:40.22\00:13:43.92
