Welcome back to the program, 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 and I'm your host Charles Mills, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 we're here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:04.10\00:00:05.43 We're talking about heart disease on today's program, 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.44 and the fact that we all have some blockage in our arteries. 00:00:07.47\00:00:11.01 I guess that's because we just don't live as healthy 00:00:11.04\00:00:13.58 as we should and even the environment. 00:00:13.61\00:00:15.41 I don't know if everyone has blockages, 00:00:15.44\00:00:17.71 but a large majority that are under stress, 00:00:17.75\00:00:20.22 a large majority that they could, have blocked, 00:00:20.25\00:00:23.72 but occasionally I study an artery that's completely normal. 00:00:23.75\00:00:26.79 One of the scariest things I've heard in interviews with 00:00:26.82\00:00:28.96 people is this... That when parents, moms, 00:00:28.99\00:00:32.93 are having a high fat diet and eating a lot of dairy 00:00:32.96\00:00:36.36 and meat and whatnot, they have found arterial 00:00:36.40\00:00:39.77 streaking in unborn children. Yeah... 00:00:39.80\00:00:44.67 Unborn children! The streaking happens inside 00:00:44.71\00:00:47.94 the baby before it's born. 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.41 And that brings up a whole-nother 00:00:49.44\00:00:51.08 program sometime, you know, women that carry children. 00:00:51.11\00:00:54.75 You know, all the things that they do 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.79 affects the growing mom... 00:00:56.82\00:00:58.75 They're setting them up for heart disease from day #1. 00:00:58.79\00:01:00.96 Yes and all sorts of other diseases, you know, 00:01:00.99\00:01:03.29 and we'll have to talk about that sometimes... 00:01:03.32\00:01:05.26 the food we eat, the stress that pregnant woman are under, 00:01:05.29\00:01:08.73 all that affects the developing brain too. 00:01:08.76\00:01:11.03 So we already know about the fatty diets, 00:01:11.07\00:01:13.13 and you pass that on to the ones that you're nurturing 00:01:13.17\00:01:15.44 and taking care inside of you. Okay 00:01:15.47\00:01:17.57 Let's go to the Bible, God's Prescription Book 00:01:17.61\00:01:20.48 and let's read a verse, I'll ask them to put the 00:01:20.51\00:01:23.18 verse up there on the screen, listen to this... 00:01:23.21\00:01:25.88 This is Exodus 23:25- this is God speaking 00:01:35.86\00:01:38.26 to the children of Israel. 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.00 "I will take it away. 00:01:40.03\00:01:41.36 God's blessing will be on your food and water." 00:01:41.40\00:01:43.53 I guess we need to eat food and water that God has blessed, 00:01:43.57\00:01:46.50 and is there an indication someplace what that food is? 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.20 Yeah and I love that text, Charles, because it says, 00:01:49.24\00:01:52.01 "I will take away sickness," and so it ties sickness 00:01:52.04\00:01:55.91 in to food and water and we know that's a large 00:01:55.94\00:01:58.31 component. And the source of food and water. 00:01:58.35\00:02:00.65 Yeah and years ago the Greek doctor, Dr. Hippocrates, 00:02:00.68\00:02:04.42 he talked about, "Let food be thy medicine," 00:02:04.45\00:02:07.56 and that was a very wonderful thing and we know that God 00:02:07.59\00:02:10.73 gave us and we're now proving it with the studies 00:02:10.76\00:02:14.16 that are out there that are whole food, plant-based diets. 00:02:14.20\00:02:17.63 I think the studies that have been done by Dean Ornish, 00:02:17.67\00:02:20.94 by Dr. Esselstyn and others have really proven 00:02:20.97\00:02:24.47 that that's the healthiest diet for our arteries; 00:02:24.51\00:02:26.78 can reverse disease; make these arteries bigger; 00:02:26.81\00:02:29.38 that our standard fat-filled American diet 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.11 is not so good at all. 00:02:32.15\00:02:33.85 And yet, here we're giving a scripture years before, 00:02:33.88\00:02:37.42 and I was talking about, you know, as a food, 00:02:37.45\00:02:39.49 and that's very interesting about food for us 00:02:39.52\00:02:41.79 because we think back, "Well, God told us at creation, 00:02:41.82\00:02:45.09 eat fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains." 00:02:45.13\00:02:48.06 Daniel and his friends, another story about pulse and water. 00:02:48.10\00:02:52.00 As if, you know, we had to be reminded again. 00:02:52.03\00:02:54.24 And then the Israelites, remember, they wanted to eat 00:02:54.27\00:02:57.67 birds instead of manna and then they got all sick. Yes 00:02:57.71\00:03:00.54 So this is a very good text that God has know all along, 00:03:00.58\00:03:03.81 now that science is again proving that the Bible 00:03:03.85\00:03:06.61 has great prescriptions for us. 00:03:06.65\00:03:08.42 Water, water is another good prescription... 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.09 When we're dehydrated, that raises our risk 00:03:11.12\00:03:13.59 of cardiovascular disease. 00:03:13.62\00:03:14.96 The stress mechanisms - when you're dehydrated, 00:03:14.99\00:03:17.46 and more stress and more clotting. 00:03:17.49\00:03:19.66 When you're dehydrated, you're more likely to clot, 00:03:19.69\00:03:21.36 if you have a block in your clot - not so good, Charles. 00:03:21.40\00:03:24.20 So another excellent, excellent text. 00:03:24.23\00:03:26.67 We talk often of biblical technology, 00:03:26.70\00:03:28.90 when we say, "Look in the Bible for prescriptions," 00:03:28.94\00:03:30.77 that was what we're talking about - it's there! 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.84 It's right there, the principles that God laid out in 00:03:32.87\00:03:35.68 Genesis and then repeated 00:03:35.71\00:03:37.05 throughout the Bible for our health - it's there! 00:03:37.08\00:03:39.71 That's where you go first to find the answers, 00:03:39.75\00:03:41.95 you look in the Bible. 00:03:41.98\00:03:43.32 You'll be surprised at how many diseases you will NOT get; 00:03:43.35\00:03:46.12 how many lifestyle diseases, especially, you will not get 00:03:46.15\00:03:49.36 if you simply follow what God 00:03:49.39\00:03:50.73 had in mind from the very beginning. 00:03:50.76\00:03:52.39 Okay! Questions that have come in to heartwiseministries.org 00:03:52.43\00:03:55.50 on heart... "Can a heart attack be predicted or is it like 00:03:55.53\00:03:59.87 hurricanes? Can you really know what's going on? 00:03:59.90\00:04:01.77 Yeah, Charles, I get that question a lot, 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.64 but when I talk to somebody in the office, 00:04:04.67\00:04:07.18 and they tell me that they smoke, that they have diabetes, 00:04:07.21\00:04:10.51 that they are under stress. RED FLAG, RED FLAG 00:04:10.55\00:04:12.31 I'll say that I can't predict it, but if we don't 00:04:12.35\00:04:14.78 make choices, you're going to be at a 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.15 high risk group. There you go... 00:04:16.18\00:04:17.52 You can do a stress test. 00:04:17.55\00:04:19.09 That's where you walk on a treadmill and not have a symptom 00:04:19.12\00:04:21.36 at all and still have a heart attack tomorrow 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.93 if one of these plaques... 00:04:23.96\00:04:25.29 Because you may be at this level right here. 00:04:25.33\00:04:26.66 It may be a 40% or 50%. 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.56 Right, those plaques get unstable and break. 00:04:28.60\00:04:30.80 So a stress test only really tells me that if I think 00:04:30.83\00:04:33.94 your symptoms right now are from your heart, 00:04:33.97\00:04:36.14 and whether I think you might benefit from one of 00:04:36.17\00:04:39.04 modern medicine's procedures like a stent or a bypass, 00:04:39.07\00:04:42.34 or even more medications. 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.45 So can a heart attack be predicted? 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.48 No, but we can tell people that are at great risk than others. 00:04:46.51\00:04:49.98 And, a person who eats a whole food plant-based diet 00:04:50.02\00:04:53.42 that keeps their stress under good control, 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.96 that they don't have a genetic tendency, 00:04:55.99\00:04:57.76 that has their blood pressure good, 00:04:57.79\00:04:59.59 they're under the lowest risk. Right 00:04:59.63\00:05:01.33 And so I don't worry as much about the... 00:05:01.36\00:05:03.40 There are no guarantees in this world. 00:05:03.43\00:05:04.77 No, there are no guarantees, but they're at a lower risk, 00:05:04.80\00:05:06.87 but unfortunately, they're going to claim, 00:05:06.90\00:05:08.24 "Well, a lot of these tests that we can get blood tests 00:05:08.27\00:05:10.44 that predict heart attack, none of it predicts heart attack, 00:05:10.47\00:05:13.21 but it might be able to help with who is at risk, 00:05:13.27\00:05:15.78 who is not at risk. 00:05:15.81\00:05:17.18 And, of course, Framingham is tying in cholesterol 00:05:17.21\00:05:19.35 with all of it and I think we should do a program on this. 00:05:19.38\00:05:21.02 So, we have high cholesterol... You know, and everyone is 00:05:21.05\00:05:24.05 focused on cholesterol, but remember that's just 00:05:24.09\00:05:26.12 one component of a disease. 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.12 It's much more complicated by the chemical 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.46 mechanisms as we found out. 00:05:30.49\00:05:31.83 And that's why modern medicine wants to focus so much on 00:05:31.86\00:05:34.36 cholesterol, they have a pill for it. Yes 00:05:34.40\00:05:35.96 They have a bullet for that but not that particular part. 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.23 As we found out, for a while they thought all heart attacks 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.80 were from cigarettes... Now it has gone to cholesterol, 00:05:40.84\00:05:43.07 now it's unstable plaques, so it's all one bullet thing, 00:05:43.10\00:05:46.37 but it's more complicated than that. 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.48 So the stress test tells you what exactly? 00:05:48.51\00:05:50.88 Well, if you had chest pain and I couldn't tell 00:05:50.91\00:05:53.75 what it was coming from, and I said, 00:05:53.78\00:05:55.12 "I'm not sure whether that's your heart or not. 00:05:55.15\00:05:56.48 I put you on the treadmill and make your heart work. 00:05:56.52\00:05:59.79 And if your heart works hard and you start having 00:05:59.82\00:06:02.09 that symptom again, or parts of the heart 00:06:02.12\00:06:05.43 don't get enough blood, I would say, "Yes, that 00:06:05.46\00:06:08.50 symptom is from your heart, and you're going to need 00:06:08.53\00:06:11.13 further investigation and evaluation. 00:06:11.17\00:06:13.44 But if you walk 10 or 12 minutes and never have symptoms, 00:06:13.47\00:06:16.47 the stress test is completely normal, 00:06:16.50\00:06:18.47 and we have ways to look at the heart; 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.18 we look at whether you have the symptoms; 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.01 we look at the EKG; sometimes we can image 00:06:22.04\00:06:24.75 the heart - that means look at it dynamically. 00:06:24.78\00:06:27.52 We can do that with sound waves; we call that a 00:06:27.55\00:06:29.98 "stress echocardiogram." 00:06:30.02\00:06:31.82 We can look at nuclear medicine to see how it flows. 00:06:31.85\00:06:34.52 We call that a "nuclear stress test." 00:06:34.56\00:06:37.06 So those are all things that can predict whether we think 00:06:37.09\00:06:40.16 your symptoms are for your heart. 00:06:40.20\00:06:41.56 And also, it can tell us if we think surgery or further 00:06:41.60\00:06:45.13 treatment would be of benefit to you. 00:06:45.17\00:06:46.60 But a lot of people think that 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.00 stress tests predict heart attacks - it does not, okay. 00:06:48.04\00:06:51.91 So you can have a completely normal stress test 00:06:51.94\00:06:53.98 and still have a heart attack. 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.34 All right, okay, very good. 00:06:55.38\00:06:56.91 This question here that came into the 00:06:57.78\00:06:59.81 heartwiseministries.org website 00:06:59.85\00:07:03.45 We seem to know so much, we have so much medicine, 00:07:03.49\00:07:07.22 we have so much information, we know what to do... 00:07:07.26\00:07:11.26 This question is, "Why are heart attack rates so high?" 00:07:11.29\00:07:13.76 If we know what to do and we have all this modern science, 00:07:13.80\00:07:17.13 why are we still having heart 00:07:17.17\00:07:19.10 attack rates? "Why are they still high?" 00:07:19.13\00:07:21.77 Yeah well, if you think about it, the heart attack rates 00:07:21.80\00:07:24.61 in America is running right around 600,000. 00:07:24.64\00:07:28.81 That is 600,000 too many! 00:07:28.84\00:07:30.18 Well not heart attacks, but that's total deaths from 00:07:30.21\00:07:32.18 heart disease and heart attacks are the most common. 00:07:32.21\00:07:34.08 One is too much... 600,000 and that number 00:07:34.12\00:07:37.45 stayed high through the years despite all of our technology... 00:07:37.49\00:07:40.12 And our technology to treat the heart immediately 00:07:40.16\00:07:43.22 with a stent or a bypass or with medicines 00:07:43.26\00:07:45.46 to stabilize... It still stays up there. 00:07:45.49\00:07:47.63 We've gotten better at that, and if a person comes in 00:07:47.66\00:07:50.13 fairly quick, we can help restore blood flow, 00:07:50.17\00:07:53.03 but we haven't reversed the cause of disease. 00:07:53.07\00:07:55.67 So, if you think about it, heart attack rates are 00:07:55.70\00:07:58.17 going to continue to be high until we can get at the cause 00:07:58.21\00:08:01.34 of heart attacks and I think we touched on this a little bit, 00:08:01.38\00:08:04.55 the cause of heart attacks. 00:08:04.58\00:08:05.91 You know, we can't change our mom and dad, okay, 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.92 but we talk about the food, the fatty foods we eat. 00:08:08.95\00:08:11.59 We're eating more fatty foods, processed foods 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.36 than ever before. 00:08:14.39\00:08:15.72 And we've seen in the studies now that if we can move 00:08:15.76\00:08:18.06 towards a whole food, plant-based diet, 00:08:18.09\00:08:20.43 we can lower that risk dramatically, 00:08:20.46\00:08:22.23 but we're not getting out there 00:08:22.26\00:08:23.60 and talking about that from the rooftops 00:08:23.63\00:08:25.37 even though that's very important. 00:08:25.40\00:08:26.80 I'm also understanding that the brain and stress 00:08:26.84\00:08:29.90 how that plays a role too, and yet our society 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.77 is more stressed out than ever at places that we don't even 00:08:32.81\00:08:35.74 think, you know... we're staying up later; 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.81 all the media; all the things we're doing; 00:08:37.85\00:08:40.12 we think we have to work 24/7, we're busy all the time 00:08:40.15\00:08:44.89 that causes all the stress chemistry that we talked 00:08:44.92\00:08:47.39 would be turned on; we eat some bad foods; 00:08:47.42\00:08:49.79 and we start getting it in utero and before you know it, 00:08:49.82\00:08:53.60 we're a society that's filled with coronary disease. 00:08:53.63\00:08:56.26 So the heart attack rates are so high because we're not 00:08:56.30\00:08:59.70 getting at the cause. 00:08:59.73\00:09:01.34 Once we start getting at the cause, 00:09:01.37\00:09:03.14 the heart attack rates will be coming down, 00:09:03.17\00:09:05.37 but we do a really good job if a person has a symptom. 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.38 And if anyone out there is having symptoms when you 00:09:08.41\00:09:10.61 do something, if you don't feel right above the waist, 00:09:10.65\00:09:13.52 if you're having pain that won't go away, 00:09:13.55\00:09:15.35 seek medical attention right away... 00:09:15.38\00:09:17.99 Because still, 1 in 3 people that have a heart attack, 00:09:18.02\00:09:21.09 still die within the first year. 00:09:21.12\00:09:23.16 So if you don't get help, the instability that happens 00:09:23.19\00:09:25.46 from the heart can be terrible. 00:09:25.49\00:09:28.20 Because what they did in the hospital did not fix the problem 00:09:28.26\00:09:30.30 Right, it did not fix the problem, 00:09:30.33\00:09:32.03 it treated the symptoms. 00:09:32.07\00:09:33.40 Even people who have had bypass surgery in stents, 00:09:33.44\00:09:35.97 that hasn't lowered the risk of heart attack. 00:09:36.00\00:09:38.37 The risk of heart attack is still there; in some cases, 00:09:38.41\00:09:41.08 it might be higher if we damage the blood vessel. 00:09:41.11\00:09:44.11 Does this make sense? It does... 00:09:44.15\00:09:45.48 You know, and the problem is that sometimes I think 00:09:45.51\00:09:47.65 we make it more complicated, and we're out there 00:09:47.68\00:09:50.49 and all this technology makes it so complicated, 00:09:50.52\00:09:53.02 the media spins it their way, and before you know it, 00:09:53.05\00:09:55.69 people are so confused about their heart, 00:09:55.72\00:09:58.06 that they don't know the simple things that they can do 00:09:58.09\00:10:00.26 to take care of their hearts. 00:10:00.30\00:10:01.63 People do not want to know the truth - many people. 00:10:01.66\00:10:05.10 I have a neighbor that had a massive heart attack, 00:10:05.13\00:10:08.00 and had to go and he had a triple bypass and everything, 00:10:08.04\00:10:11.07 and he was overweight, pouchy little gut sticking out there, 00:10:11.11\00:10:14.78 and he didn't exercise very much... 00:10:14.81\00:10:16.14 So when he came back, he said, "You know, I'm going to 00:10:16.18\00:10:17.51 take care of myself," but you know what, I've seen that 00:10:17.55\00:10:20.32 he hasn't, he is now overweight, pouchy and doesn't 00:10:20.35\00:10:22.82 exercise very much. 00:10:22.85\00:10:24.19 He thinks he's fixed, I gave him a copy of 00:10:24.22\00:10:27.42 "Forks Over Knives" to look at and He said, "Well that was 00:10:27.46\00:10:28.96 interesting, I wonder if he even looked at it. 00:10:29.02\00:10:30.36 They don't want to know the truth because the truth is 00:10:30.39\00:10:33.23 going to maybe make you make some changes. 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.36 You may have to change your diet, 00:10:35.40\00:10:36.73 your way of exercising, the way you think, 00:10:36.77\00:10:38.47 the way you believe, the structure 00:10:38.50\00:10:40.24 of your life and you have to make changes. 00:10:40.27\00:10:41.60 And people don't want to do that. 00:10:41.64\00:10:43.14 They would rather take the risk and use the life 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.97 that got them sick and say, "Well, now that I've had my 00:10:46.01\00:10:48.48 problem, I'm not going to gave it again, 00:10:48.51\00:10:50.25 the doctor has fixed it, I'm fine, 00:10:50.28\00:10:51.91 I have these bypasses in there, they're working fine, 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.35 and I pass this guy every day on the mailbox 00:10:54.38\00:10:57.15 and I wave at him and he waves at me and I realize 00:10:57.19\00:10:59.09 that he is setting himself up for the exact same problem 00:10:59.12\00:11:02.92 that he had before and this time he may not make it through. 00:11:02.96\00:11:05.76 Yeah, and all we can do is love people and not judge them, 00:11:05.79\00:11:09.46 and hopefully that God will work in their lives 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.73 to make these little changes, and when I see someone that 00:11:11.77\00:11:14.30 dies of a heart attack and it bothers me. 00:11:14.34\00:11:16.91 That's why when they come into the office, I tell them that 00:11:16.94\00:11:19.97 "I love you enough to tell you the truth." 00:11:20.01\00:11:23.04 And that's what we're doing here... 00:11:23.08\00:11:24.41 "I love you enough to look you right in the eye 00:11:24.45\00:11:26.08 and say," "Here's the truth." 00:11:26.11\00:11:27.45 What you do with it, that's your responsibility. 00:11:27.48\00:11:31.09 But the fact that we're here and Dr. Marcum 00:11:31.12\00:11:32.85 is here saying this, that's our responsibility, 00:11:32.89\00:11:36.16 and we want to make sure that we are here for you. 00:11:36.19\00:11:38.49 Isn't that right, Dr. Marcum? 00:11:38.53\00:11:39.86 That's exactly right, Charles. 00:11:39.89\00:11:41.23 Okay, all right... Well, one of the things that 00:11:41.26\00:11:43.16 we have to show you is not only the Bible text, 00:11:43.20\00:11:46.10 we also want to take you into the Throne of Grace. 00:11:46.13\00:11:48.54 We want to take you to the Master Physician 00:11:48.57\00:11:50.74 and sit you down and let Him talk to you in your inner self, 00:11:50.77\00:11:55.11 in your mind to lead you, to guide you, 00:11:55.14\00:11:57.61 and we do that through that wonderful thing that God 00:11:57.65\00:11:59.85 has made for us called "prayer" and we're going to pray for you 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.88 on our return, so stay tuned. 00:12:02.92\00:12:04.29 There is so much to know about coronary artery disease 00:12:11.76\00:12:14.46 and we talked a little bit about it today and I hope you can 00:12:14.50\00:12:16.77 share this with some of your friends. 00:12:16.80\00:12:18.50 If you are having a symptom, I want you to get help right now 00:12:18.53\00:12:21.64 and we want everyone to work on improving their diets 00:12:21.67\00:12:24.64 and improve their stress. There might be someone out there 00:12:24.67\00:12:27.88 that's suffering from coronary artery disease and we want 00:12:27.91\00:12:30.41 to let you know that there is hope today for you, 00:12:30.45\00:12:32.98 so let's all pray together. 00:12:33.01\00:12:34.45 Father God, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve you 00:12:34.48\00:12:39.25 and to let other people know that there is truth in your word 00:12:39.29\00:12:42.89 and that you want us to be healthy and the text we read 00:12:42.92\00:12:45.33 today about eating good food and having healthy lives is 00:12:45.36\00:12:49.56 what we want if this is a blessing that you want to 00:12:49.60\00:12:51.50 give to us Father, and those that are out there that are 00:12:51.53\00:12:54.27 sick today, we want to pray for the healing, however you want 00:12:54.30\00:12:56.81 however you want to heal Father we want to trust you 00:12:56.84\00:12:59.11 to do what's best in our lives and thank you for the ability 00:12:59.14\00:13:02.11 to be here today and to love each other, and we want 00:13:02.14\00:13:05.21 to thank you for being our God. 00:13:05.25\00:13:06.72 This is my prayer, Amen. 00:13:06.75\00:13:08.18 Thank you for joining us, we will be back next time 00:13:08.22\00:13:11.82 with a new topic, and we want to wish you the best health. 00:13:11.85\00:13:15.29
