Hello everyone and welcome to another 3ABN - Up Close 00:00:26.10\00:00:29.89 We're coming to you from the Houston West Seventh Day 00:00:29.92\00:00:33.64 Adventist Church, in Houston, Texas 00:00:33.68\00:00:35.98 and we'd like to give a Texas size thank you 00:00:36.01\00:00:39.68 to our live audience who is joining us for this program. 00:00:39.72\00:00:44.06 Today we will discuss a devastating condition 00:00:44.10\00:00:48.03 that affects millions of people worldwide. 00:00:48.06\00:00:51.22 This condition is no respecter of persons. 00:00:51.25\00:00:54.77 It affects the old and the young, the rich 00:00:54.81\00:00:58.29 and the poor, people of all religious persuasions and people 00:00:58.32\00:01:04.08 of no religious persuasions; males and females. 00:01:04.12\00:01:08.92 In the United States alone 00:01:08.95\00:01:11.20 recent studies report that over 19 million 00:01:11.24\00:01:14.91 people suffer from this condition. 00:01:14.94\00:01:18.16 And 12 million of those are women. 00:01:18.20\00:01:21.35 More notably nearly 50% of those who are 00:01:21.39\00:01:25.12 trapped in the snare of this condition don't recognize what 00:01:25.16\00:01:30.38 is wrong with them. 00:01:30.41\00:01:31.38 Our topic today is: Depression. 00:01:31.39\00:01:34.45 Not the occasional bout with the blues that is common 00:01:34.48\00:01:38.15 to humanity, but the more dangerous medical condition 00:01:38.18\00:01:42.65 that afflicts so many souls. 00:01:42.69\00:01:44.86 But life doesn't have to be swallowed up 00:01:44.89\00:01:48.23 in the shadow of this dark cloud. 00:01:48.26\00:01:50.68 There is help and there is hope. 00:01:50.71\00:01:54.26 Our first guest is Sandy Williams. 00:01:54.30\00:01:57.81 Sandy and her husband Lee have 3 beautiful daughters, 00:01:57.84\00:02:01.56 ages 20, 9 and 3. 00:02:01.59\00:02:04.94 The Williams own and operate Ashley's Furniture, 00:02:04.98\00:02:09.31 named after the oldest daughter, and located in Ardmore Oklahoma. 00:02:09.34\00:02:13.71 Sandy is a stay at home mom who now delights in her 00:02:13.74\00:02:18.16 responsibilities as a wife and mother. 00:02:18.20\00:02:20.67 She takes special pleasure in providing services 00:02:20.70\00:02:23.79 for her family, that others may 00:02:23.82\00:02:25.73 take for granted. And she also enjoys reading, researching 00:02:25.77\00:02:30.71 various subjects and walking in the great outdoors. 00:02:30.74\00:02:33.96 But, it has not always been like this. 00:02:33.99\00:02:37.74 Sandy sat down with us and told us how her depression 00:02:37.77\00:02:42.65 affected her throughout her whole life. 00:02:42.68\00:02:45.13 And especially her family. Listen to this: 00:02:45.16\00:02:48.98 Prior to the Depression Recovery Program I could never 00:02:49.28\00:02:53.12 really remember a time in my life I wasn't depressed. 00:02:53.16\00:02:56.97 But going through the program and realizing the causes of the 00:02:57.07\00:03:01.74 the depression, I had doctors telling me, and I knew I was 00:03:01.77\00:03:06.41 depressed, every doctor told me I was depressed, but nobody 00:03:06.44\00:03:10.30 ever gave me any causes or anything to look to, as to what 00:03:10.34\00:03:13.98 was causing that depression. During the depression I was 00:03:14.02\00:03:17.63 unable to exercise. I was unable to leave my house. 00:03:17.66\00:03:20.80 And I really hate to say this, but, in all honesty, it took 00:03:20.84\00:03:26.54 every ounce of energy I had to even take a shower. 00:03:26.57\00:03:30.19 So I would go for days without taking a shower. 00:03:30.23\00:03:33.80 For me, I think was the thought, 00:03:33.83\00:03:35.96 was the distorted thinking too. 00:03:36.00\00:03:38.12 Growing up thinking: What's wrong with me? 00:03:38.16\00:03:43.37 Always asking: what's wrong with me? 00:03:43.40\00:03:45.98 And so, as an adult always looking for 00:03:46.01\00:03:48.59 what's wrong with me and changing that thought and 00:03:48.62\00:03:52.89 seeing that asking myself what's right with me 00:03:52.93\00:03:58.26 and finding a lot of right things in my life and my family. 00:03:58.29\00:04:02.11 Prior to the program, depression... 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.79 all I can say was just... it was a black cloud over me 00:04:05.83\00:04:12.91 every day. 00:04:12.94\00:04:14.96 I would be in bed for 5 days at a time. 00:04:14.99\00:04:17.83 My husband would wake the girls up 00:04:17.86\00:04:21.06 and get them ready for school 00:04:21.09\00:04:23.40 and I would just lay there. 00:04:23.60\00:04:26.48 My heart's desire's always been 00:04:26.51\00:04:29.72 to be a good mother and a good wife and the things 00:04:29.76\00:04:33.51 that I desired so much, I wasn't able to accomplish. 00:04:33.55\00:04:37.27 During the darkest part of my depression 00:04:37.30\00:04:39.64 was whenever my 2 year old and I 00:04:39.67\00:04:42.61 were home alone and the depression was just overwhelming 00:04:42.65\00:04:47.04 I sat in the living room floor and rocked her and just prayed 00:04:47.08\00:04:51.04 God you're going to have to do something because I can't keep 00:04:51.08\00:04:55.01 living like this. 00:04:55.04\00:04:56.34 And I called my husband and I told him that 00:04:56.37\00:05:03.71 I couldn't take care of Jade, he would have to come to get her. 00:05:03.74\00:05:07.04 And I went to behavioral med place for a couple of weeks 00:05:07.53\00:05:12.73 and not long after that, I was listening to 107.1, never 00:05:12.76\00:05:17.93 listened to radio stations before in my life. 00:05:17.96\00:05:20.27 And I heard about the Depression Recovery Program 00:05:20.30\00:05:23.13 and I decided I'll try something different. 00:05:23.16\00:05:25.74 I've tried everything else. So that was the 00:05:25.84\00:05:29.86 turning point in my life. 00:05:29.89\00:05:31.46 It's hard to imagine what that must have felt like. But we're 00:05:33.52\00:05:37.54 so thankful that Sandy is with us tonight. And I'd like to 00:05:37.57\00:05:41.56 thank her very much for coming. And come on up here. 00:05:41.59\00:05:44.66 We want to welcome Sandy Williams. 00:05:44.69\00:05:46.72 Thank you. Thank you for sharing your testimony. Thank you. 00:05:55.20\00:06:00.18 I just want to ask you one question. Did you feel guilty 00:06:00.22\00:06:05.53 Oh, guilt, guilt. About this? Every day, every hour. I mean 00:06:05.56\00:06:10.80 There wasn't a minute of guilt. Just sitting here, watching that 00:06:10.84\00:06:14.89 just brought tears to my eyes thinking how horrible that 00:06:14.92\00:06:19.59 that feeling was. It was just the most debilitating thing 00:06:19.63\00:06:23.53 I've ever gone through in my life. Of course. You know, 00:06:23.56\00:06:27.39 sometimes people who are going through depression are ashamed 00:06:27.43\00:06:31.36 of their condition and they don't know how to reach out 00:06:31.39\00:06:33.94 for help. But you mentioned that on the radio, which I know that 00:06:33.98\00:06:37.82 you never watched it or listen to it before. I never... 00:06:37.85\00:06:40.91 The Lord had you tune in that day. What program did you go to? 00:06:40.94\00:06:45.15 I went to the Depression Recovery Program with 00:06:45.18\00:06:48.02 dr. Neil Nedley. Was dr. Nedley? And what changes did dr. Nedley 00:06:48.06\00:06:52.26 have you make in your life? Just lifestyle changes. Things that 00:06:52.30\00:06:56.55 you would, really common sense things. But people that are so 00:06:56.58\00:07:00.80 depressed, I mean you can't even comprehend how to get out 00:07:01.00\00:07:06.60 of it. Just like exercising, changing your eating habits, 00:07:06.63\00:07:12.20 drinking water, meditating, spending time with the Lord 00:07:12.30\00:07:15.24 When I was depressed I couldn't I couldn't even open my Bible 00:07:15.44\00:07:21.38 I mean, I would pace the floors, I just felt caged and isolated 00:07:21.42\00:07:27.33 anyway it was horrible. It was very horrible. 00:07:27.36\00:07:31.75 So, as this program then you began working in the program 00:07:31.79\00:07:35.56 things began to turn around for you, didn't they? Let's look 00:07:35.59\00:07:39.44 at just something that the recovery program has done for 00:07:39.47\00:07:43.29 Sandy. Let's take a look. 00:07:43.32\00:07:44.71 Following the Depression Recovery Program, the thing 00:07:45.96\00:07:49.43 that I learned the most about was most of it was just common 00:07:49.47\00:07:52.41 sense things, that you could apply to your life. It wasn't 00:07:52.51\00:07:57.62 hard, wasn't very difficult at all. But I've found that it has 00:07:57.65\00:08:02.73 transformed my life completely. My husband has his wife back, 00:08:02.83\00:08:09.21 my children have their mother back and I have my life back. 00:08:09.24\00:08:14.40 Oh, praise the Lord! Alleluia! Sandy, tell me something: 00:08:14.44\00:08:19.53 What was the thing that was the turning point in the recovering 00:08:19.57\00:08:23.39 program for you? 00:08:23.42\00:08:24.39 The turning point was knowing that all of these feelings that 00:08:25.65\00:08:30.94 I, everything that I've been going through, there was a name 00:08:30.97\00:08:36.88 to it, there was reasons for it I mean, during that period in my 00:08:36.91\00:08:42.30 life I felt like, like I said, there is something wrong with me 00:08:42.34\00:08:47.70 what's wrong with me? 00:08:47.73\00:08:48.91 Did you feel like no one would understand because you 00:08:48.95\00:08:51.83 couldn't understand? Nobody understood. 00:08:51.86\00:08:53.35 And I even heard things like: snap out of it. 00:08:53.39\00:08:56.54 You have everything to be thankful for, Sandy. 00:08:56.57\00:08:59.69 You have a husband that loves you. 00:08:59.89\00:09:01.43 You have 3 wonderful children, you know. 00:09:01.46\00:09:05.12 What's the deal? 00:09:05.15\00:09:07.17 But, unless you have experienced it, 00:09:07.20\00:09:11.09 I don't think anybody can really understand 00:09:11.12\00:09:13.98 what a debilitating disease it is. 00:09:14.02\00:09:19.19 You know, I want all of us to try to remember this that 00:09:19.22\00:09:23.30 it seems to make sense for some of us that when we see someone 00:09:23.34\00:09:29.45 who maybe rehearsing the past and negative thinking and 00:09:29.48\00:09:33.35 dwelling all the negative we want you to just shake them and 00:09:33.56\00:09:36.69 say those kind of things, but all they did was induce more 00:09:36.73\00:09:39.83 guilt for you, I'm sure. 00:09:39.86\00:09:41.32 Yes. And a lot of times I wasn't even thinking about the past. 00:09:41.36\00:09:45.02 It was just, I know the past affected me but it wasn't that 00:09:45.05\00:09:51.32 I was thinking about the past. It was just, I know there is a 00:09:51.35\00:09:57.61 lot of distorted thinking, but I don't know.. 00:09:57.64\00:10:02.78 Praise the Lord that you found dr. Nedley's program and that he 00:10:02.82\00:10:07.30 has helped you save a lot. Yes, Alleluia! 00:10:07.33\00:10:10.74 Coming up next we're going to be talking with dr. Neil Nedley 00:10:10.78\00:10:15.47 about some of the common symptoms and the causes of 00:10:15.50\00:10:18.71 depression. So, please don't go away. 00:10:18.74\00:10:21.17 We're going to be talking about teenage pregnancy 00:10:27.88\00:10:30.95 We were together for almost a year. And we were in love 00:10:30.99\00:10:35.73 Looking for love in all the wrong places 00:10:36.53\00:10:39.95 I didn't know what to think I didn't know what to do 00:10:40.05\00:10:44.12 I'm sure my parents are going to be upset 00:10:44.15\00:10:47.41 Receiving acceptance from their peers. It's so important. 00:10:47.45\00:10:50.99 Wanted to fit in. It's so important. 00:10:51.02\00:10:53.86 Next week on Up Close 00:10:54.16\00:10:56.18 Don't miss it. 00:10:56.42\00:10:57.82 Welcome back to up close. Now it's time to introduce our 00:11:08.79\00:11:12.96 expert guest dr. Neil Nedley. Dr. Nedley was the founding 00:11:12.99\00:11:17.13 medical director of the Life Style Center of America in 00:11:17.27\00:11:20.75 in Oklahoma. And he currently practices internal medicine at 00:11:20.79\00:11:25.39 Nedley Clinics in Ardmore, Oklahoma. 00:11:25.42\00:11:28.07 He has authored several health books, including one on the 00:11:28.11\00:11:32.69 subject that we're focusing on today. 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.28 And it is entitled: Depression the Way Out. 00:11:35.32\00:11:38.96 Please welcome, Dr. Nedley. 00:11:38.99\00:11:41.41 You know, this topic has a special interest to me because 00:11:47.95\00:11:51.72 I am finding as I go around ministering, that there are more 00:11:51.75\00:11:56.02 and more people who are caught up in the snare of depression 00:11:56.05\00:12:00.29 And it seems that some Christians feel that 00:12:00.32\00:12:03.25 in particular feel guilty about having this, because 00:12:03.29\00:12:07.19 they think, well the Lord should, you know if I am a 00:12:07.23\00:12:11.10 Christian, I shouldn't have depression. 00:12:11.13\00:12:12.93 But, could you share with our audience, what are some of the 00:12:12.97\00:12:16.37 common causes, symptoms of depression, so that we might 00:12:16.40\00:12:20.82 recognize if someone we love, or even if we ourselves we are 00:12:20.86\00:12:24.79 going through it. 00:12:24.82\00:12:25.79 Most people with depression have one or two symptoms and 00:12:25.80\00:12:29.25 maybe, both of the symptoms. One of them can be deep sadness 00:12:29.28\00:12:33.94 or emptiness. Some people don't have that crying spells a deep 00:12:33.97\00:12:38.43 sadness. But have a feeling of emptiness. They just have this 00:12:38.47\00:12:42.95 center core that feels empty, like there is something missing 00:12:42.99\00:12:47.44 The second very common symptom is apathy. 00:12:47.47\00:12:51.59 Where the individual just doesn't have the joy or the 00:12:51.63\00:12:55.25 energy of everyday living. They get up in the morning, 00:12:55.28\00:12:58.41 not really looking forward to the day. 00:12:58.44\00:13:00.59 Not being very interested. And what is going to be happening 00:13:00.63\00:13:04.27 during that day, or what could happen 00:13:04.38\00:13:06.41 And those, most depressed people will have one or both 00:13:06.45\00:13:10.34 of those symptoms. And then there are 7 others, 00:13:10.37\00:13:13.09 that the majority of depressed patients will have. 00:13:13.13\00:13:15.78 Such as sleep changes, appetite changes, lack of concentration 00:13:15.82\00:13:20.95 the inability to be able to make sound decisions in recognizing 00:13:20.98\00:13:26.08 that they don't have that ability, morbid thoughts, 00:13:26.11\00:13:29.87 even fatigue. That's way one of the common symptoms I see in 00:13:29.97\00:13:33.26 my internal medicine practice is people coming to me asking me 00:13:33.29\00:13:36.55 why they are so tired. And it could be due to depression 00:13:36.58\00:13:40.33 and maybe due to other things, but I have to ask them these 00:13:40.36\00:13:43.30 other questions to see if indeed it's major depression as the 00:13:43.34\00:13:46.27 underline cause of fatigue. 00:13:46.37\00:13:48.31 Is it true that sometimes, just acts and pains that no one can 00:13:48.81\00:13:52.98 explain, can depression cause that? 00:13:53.01\00:13:55.34 Yes. Now, what I've listened to you is psychiatric Bible's 00:13:55.37\00:13:58.76 definitions of depression based on those symptoms, but there is 00:13:58.80\00:14:02.19 a lot of consequences, symptom consequences. For instance, 00:14:02.22\00:14:06.19 headaches. One of the most common causes of migraine 00:14:06.22\00:14:09.80 headaches as well as tension headaches and the common 00:14:09.83\00:14:13.38 headache is actually depression. Really? 00:14:13.41\00:14:15.92 And unless we find out that the headache is due to depression 00:14:15.96\00:14:18.51 we can't get to the cause of the depression and that's the 00:14:18.54\00:14:21.89 headaches last for years and the people are really on even 00:14:21.93\00:14:25.49 narcotic pain medications on a daily base to try to deal with 00:14:25.52\00:14:29.05 these headaches. When they think the problem is the 00:14:29.08\00:14:31.59 headache, but in reality it's not. It's the depression. 00:14:31.63\00:14:34.13 What are some of the common causes for depression? 00:14:34.16\00:14:38.43 Well, there are 10 major hit categories, that can cause 00:14:38.53\00:14:43.04 depression. Depression is a multifactorial disease, meaning 00:14:43.08\00:14:47.56 that there's not usually just one cause. 00:14:47.59\00:14:50.54 It's usually 4 out of those 10 causes. 00:14:50.57\00:14:53.45 And this is something that we elucidated from the researches 00:14:53.49\00:14:57.92 in the medical literature. 00:14:57.95\00:14:59.18 I found over 150 different causes of major depression. 00:14:59.22\00:15:02.78 And at first it was overwhelming but then when I began to look 00:15:02.82\00:15:06.60 at these 150 causes, I realized they fit in the 1 of 10 00:15:06.63\00:15:10.16 categories. 00:15:10.19\00:15:11.16 And then, once we start looking at the categories, we realized 00:15:11.17\00:15:14.55 that most depressed people had 4 active hits, at least. 00:15:14.58\00:15:18.25 Some had 6 or 7. 00:15:18.28\00:15:19.58 I think in Sandy's case, we just heard from, there were 00:15:19.62\00:15:23.67 probably about 6 or 7 hits that were going on in her case. 00:15:23.70\00:15:27.72 And some of those hits, we can't do anything about. 00:15:27.75\00:15:30.06 2 of them we can't do anything about. 00:15:30.09\00:15:31.73 Genetics. Genetic is one. 00:15:31.76\00:15:32.99 And develop mental. At least as adults, we've already developed. 00:15:33.03\00:15:37.17 We've already had the bad childhood, or whatever it was 00:15:37.37\00:15:41.98 in the developmental stage that helped to bring it about as well 00:15:42.01\00:15:45.98 But interesting, that's only 2 hits. 00:15:46.01\00:15:48.04 That's not enough to cause major depression. 00:15:48.08\00:15:50.18 Even bad genes and the worst stuff bringing in the world 00:15:50.22\00:15:53.46 is not enough to cause depression. 00:15:53.49\00:15:55.45 You have to have some other hits there are active. 00:15:55.49\00:15:57.97 And another hit is life style hits. 00:15:58.00\00:16:00.51 This means lack of exercise, lack of appropriate light. 00:16:00.54\00:16:04.19 Light through the eyes, actually helps the brain produce 00:16:04.23\00:16:07.80 serotonin, an important neuro transmitter and alleviating 00:16:07.84\00:16:11.38 depression, deep breathing 00:16:11.41\00:16:13.48 These are life style hits. 00:16:13.51\00:16:15.51 Then we have circadian random hits. 00:16:15.55\00:16:17.65 This is being our regular schedule. 00:16:17.69\00:16:19.72 All of us function best on a regular schedule: regular time 00:16:19.76\00:16:25.16 for sleeping, regular times for eating and trying not to 00:16:25.20\00:16:30.53 get too far off that schedule on weekends, which is what a lot 00:16:30.57\00:16:33.78 of people mess up, and then Monday's so blue. 00:16:33.81\00:16:36.37 Let me ask you a quick question here, because I know a lot of 00:16:36.41\00:16:38.82 viewers in America will just push it to the edge of the 00:16:38.85\00:16:42.51 envelope, and then because of they're getting up early each 00:16:42.55\00:16:46.18 day for classes, I use to do this in college myself, 00:16:46.21\00:16:49.64 when the week-end comes, you try to sleep and catch up, 00:16:49.68\00:16:53.04 but it actually is more harmful to your body. Is that right? 00:16:53.08\00:16:56.30 It's actually better to get on a good schedule Monday through 00:16:56.33\00:16:59.52 Friday, that can you maintain on Saturday and Sunday 00:16:59.55\00:17:02.85 This catch up work on the week-end makes the week-end 00:17:02.89\00:17:05.68 inefficient, you don't get near as much time as you would 00:17:05.71\00:17:08.84 otherwise, and then Monday becomes very blue, because 00:17:08.88\00:17:11.77 you've got out of your schedule and you have to circadian 00:17:11.80\00:17:14.66 rhythm back in the line again. 00:17:14.69\00:17:16.09 Maybe that's why Mondays are so blue for so many people. 00:17:16.13\00:17:19.15 And actually, light is an important part of setting our 00:17:19.18\00:17:22.13 circadian rhythm. People that are depressed and have problems 00:17:22.17\00:17:25.74 with insomnia, for instance, if they are exposed to bright light 00:17:25.77\00:17:28.35 within 10 minutes of awakening and exposed to it for 30 minutes 00:17:28.38\00:17:31.68 they can reset their body clock and actually even help hormonal 00:17:31.72\00:17:34.81 depression. 00:17:34.84\00:17:35.81 and you know, something is interesting. As you're speaking 00:17:35.82\00:17:37.68 I just thought, Sandy you mentioned, did you mention 00:17:37.71\00:17:40.98 something about lacking the room dark? It seems that a lot 00:17:41.02\00:17:45.08 of people who are depressed want to keep the room dark. 00:17:45.11\00:17:49.10 They want to shut the world out, so they shut out the light, 00:17:49.14\00:17:52.31 shut out everything that could be helping them. 00:17:52.34\00:17:55.31 Darkness, isolating. yes 00:17:55.34\00:17:58.48 Isn't that interesting? Now, you just briefly touched on 00:17:58.52\00:18:01.72 something that I don't want to pass over: the hormonal. 00:18:01.75\00:18:04.92 As I was researching some things for this program, 00:18:05.51\00:18:08.51 I found out that over 19 million people, just in US 00:18:09.00\00:18:13.65 have depression, serious depression. 00:18:13.68\00:18:17.52 12 million of those are women. 00:18:17.55\00:18:20.02 So that's nearly 2/3 and it seems that particularly for 00:18:20.05\00:18:25.16 women in my age group who are closing in on menopause 00:18:25.19\00:18:30.64 that's becoming something quite frightening because of the 00:18:30.68\00:18:34.56 hormonal fluctuations. Some women, a lot of women suffer 00:18:34.59\00:18:39.53 from PMS, but then is PMDD, the disorder, there is like 5 % 00:18:39.56\00:18:44.47 of the women. So what is it about hormones that causes 00:18:44.50\00:18:48.77 this depression? 00:18:48.80\00:18:50.04 Well, it's actually a hormonal drops that tend to bring in 00:18:50.08\00:18:52.94 about more cells than anything else. This is why post partum 00:18:52.98\00:18:56.01 depression is also very common. You know, the hormone level is 00:18:56.04\00:18:58.86 high when you're caring the baby. When you deliver that baby 00:18:58.89\00:19:02.37 the hormones just rapidly just drop off, and within 2 weeks 00:19:02.41\00:19:05.86 2/3 of women actually experience the blues. 00:19:05.89\00:19:08.88 Not major post partum depression, but the blues just 00:19:08.92\00:19:13.03 simply from the hormonal drop. Menopause the over ease quite 00:19:13.07\00:19:16.66 producing the high hormonal outputs, and so you have 00:19:16.69\00:19:20.40 a hormone withdrawal state that is been produced. 00:19:20.43\00:19:24.65 Interestingly, one of the best therapies for hormonal 00:19:24.68\00:19:28.85 depression is bright light within 10 minutes of awakening, 00:19:28.89\00:19:33.12 for about 30 minutes. As women get in to more hormonal problems 00:19:33.16\00:19:39.11 they need more light. And it's actually one of the best 00:19:39.14\00:19:41.99 preventions of post partum depression. 00:19:42.02\00:19:43.78 Of course, in the post partum state, the circadian rhythms are 00:19:43.82\00:19:46.72 off, the baby's waking up every 2 hrs in the middle of the night 00:19:46.75\00:19:49.62 So, there is a number of hits going on at the same time. 00:19:49.65\00:19:52.97 The social hit with this, you know, infant in need of care, 00:19:53.01\00:19:57.47 and interesting lay, the factor that is most preventive as well 00:19:57.50\00:20:02.44 as the best treatment for it, is whatever time you should wake up 00:20:02.48\00:20:07.39 set your alarm to that and then get exposed to bright light, 00:20:07.42\00:20:11.50 for 30 minutes from awakening and that will produce that 00:20:11.53\00:20:15.69 serotonin that will start to actually reset the body clock 00:20:15.73\00:20:19.86 and can help dramatically. 00:20:19.89\00:20:21.42 What a wonderful tip! So, I hope you all took note of that. 00:20:21.52\00:20:25.55 Well, coming up next we are going to introduce you to 00:20:25.58\00:20:29.54 a woman who began singing into depression, following the death 00:20:29.58\00:20:33.80 of her husband. Now, Colleen was formerly an engineering 00:21:57.06\00:22:01.07 manager for the SPC Corporation, the telephone company. 00:22:01.11\00:22:05.68 And after her retirement from SPC she really did something 00:22:05.72\00:22:10.26 interesting: she pursued a second career as a field 00:22:10.29\00:22:14.01 correspondent for two crime magazines based in New York 00:22:14.04\00:22:18.84 and Canada. But her husband, at 49 years, succumbed to 00:22:18.88\00:22:23.89 Alzheimer's disease in 1998, and following his death, 00:22:23.92\00:22:28.90 Colleen began to realize that her lingering sadness was due 00:22:28.93\00:22:34.02 to more then grieving her husband's loss. 00:22:34.05\00:22:36.87 Somewhere along the line she had slipped into the pit of 00:22:36.91\00:22:40.94 depression. Let's listen to the story that she shared with us. 00:22:40.98\00:22:45.25 My depression came up so gradually, I was hardly aware 00:22:46.30\00:22:49.45 that it was happening. It started when my husband had 00:22:49.49\00:22:52.57 Alzheimer's. We of necessity had isolated ourselves or did 00:22:52.61\00:22:57.40 isolate ourselves, and it was only after his death I began to 00:22:57.44\00:23:01.96 realize that I no longer had any desire or will to go out 00:23:02.00\00:23:06.91 among people. And I kept to myself more and more every day, 00:23:06.94\00:23:11.37 now reacting defensively when anyone will urge me to get 00:23:11.40\00:23:15.80 and to resume a normal life. And it wasn't until I, 00:23:15.83\00:23:20.90 I didn't really realize the depth of my depression, 00:23:20.94\00:23:25.83 until I found myself avoiding going to the megabucks 00:23:25.86\00:23:30.68 until after dark, so I wouldn't have to interact in any way 00:23:30.72\00:23:33.95 with neighbors. I didn't want to. I liked my neighbors, 00:23:33.99\00:23:37.25 but I just didn't want to talk with them. I just wanted to 00:23:37.28\00:23:41.26 be by myself, be left alone. I started not answering the 00:23:41.29\00:23:45.19 phone when people calls. And, I'm ashamed to say, that I 00:23:45.22\00:23:49.18 often wouldn't even answer the door. I've neglected myself, 00:23:49.21\00:23:53.49 and my house. After years of denial I accepted that I was 00:23:53.53\00:23:57.95 depressed and it was only then that I realized that I 00:23:57.99\00:24:02.38 had lost all, all will and energy to do anything 00:24:02.41\00:24:09.62 beyond, do anything productive with my day, for more than 00:24:09.72\00:24:14.90 2 or 3 hours. 00:24:14.93\00:24:16.22 During my worst period, I would force myself to accept 00:24:16.26\00:24:20.81 invitations to social functions or I planned to go to church. 00:24:20.91\00:24:25.91 Needed the last minute, even after I was fully dressed, 00:24:25.94\00:24:29.40 I found myself unable to leave the house 00:24:29.43\00:24:32.28 Well, we're happy to have Colleen with us here today 00:24:33.61\00:24:37.04 and we'd like to ask her to come on up, so please happily 00:24:37.08\00:24:40.33 welcome Colleen. 00:24:40.36\00:24:41.56 Thank you so much for coming. And thank you for sharing your 00:24:53.48\00:24:58.27 story with us, Colleen. I know, it's - it takes a brave heart to 00:24:58.30\00:25:03.06 get on national television and share the story. But let me 00:25:03.09\00:25:07.35 ask you something: How long did it take you to come into 00:25:07.45\00:25:13.84 that appreciation of knowing that you're depressed. 00:25:13.87\00:25:16.90 You mentioned you denied it for some time. 00:25:16.93\00:25:18.84 I actually think that the depression started even before 00:25:18.88\00:25:22.01 my husband's death, during the stress involved with his 00:25:22.05\00:25:25.15 illness. But it took I would say, probably 5 years 00:25:25.18\00:25:30.42 because, when I first realized I was cutting myself off 00:25:30.46\00:25:34.80 from everyone, I just thought it was lack of solitude. 00:25:34.83\00:25:38.42 I wanted to be alone, I felt better alone. 00:25:38.45\00:25:41.07 And so it was at least 5 years before I fully acknowledged 00:25:41.11\00:25:44.65 to myself that I was depressed. 00:25:44.68\00:25:47.51 You know, I just wanted to stop here for one moment and 00:25:47.61\00:25:51.08 point out that research says that there are probably of all 00:25:51.11\00:25:54.33 the people who have been diagnosed with major depression 00:25:54.36\00:25:57.55 that's probably only 50%, may be up to 50% of the people who 00:25:57.58\00:26:04.73 are suffering from it don't understand what they are 00:26:04.76\00:26:07.85 suffering. Now did you begin to come out of this depression? 00:26:07.89\00:26:12.55 Well, since my main symptom seemed to be a complete loss of 00:26:12.58\00:26:17.21 will, just complete loss of desire to do anything 00:26:17.24\00:26:21.25 and actually I discovered Omega 3. 00:26:21.28\00:26:24.99 When I was taken Omega 3, without thinking of using it 00:26:25.03\00:26:30.53 to help depression, but I was taking it for health reasons. 00:26:30.57\00:26:35.45 and I just felt myself feeling better and still didn't realize 00:26:35.48\00:26:40.45 that it was the Omega 3, until Dr. Nedley read an article in 00:26:40.48\00:26:45.42 The Ardmoride, about dr. Nedley's uplift bar. 00:26:45.45\00:26:49.48 Yes. And he was my personal physician. 00:26:49.51\00:26:52.31 And I'd never admitted to him that I was depressed, 00:26:52.35\00:26:55.26 and, so I connected the dots. 00:26:55.29\00:26:58.60 I realized that the Omega 3 was what was making me feel better, 00:26:58.64\00:27:04.48 and making me come out a little more and just feeling like 00:27:04.51\00:27:08.22 getting out more 00:27:08.25\00:27:09.30 Wonderful. Well, one of the common symptoms that Colleen 00:27:09.34\00:27:12.43 struggled with, was sleep depravation. 00:27:12.46\00:27:15.25 So, let's take a look at how she dealt with this. 00:27:15.29\00:27:18.33 I realize now that one of my biggest problems was 00:27:18.36\00:27:21.33 sleep depravation. It started when my husband was ill, 00:27:21.37\00:27:24.89 and then it continued for years after. For nearly 5 years, 00:27:24.92\00:27:30.86 I would wake up almost every 2 hours on the dot 00:27:30.89\00:27:33.36 and I would turn the TV on, and let the sound of the TV 00:27:33.40\00:27:40.78 low me back to sleep. 00:27:40.81\00:27:42.13 And I didn't realize the damage it was doing with the flickering 00:27:42.17\00:27:47.44 light, but Dr. Nedley described the damage that did to you. 00:27:47.47\00:27:52.60 And when he explained how classical music can cause 00:27:52.63\00:27:59.72 a response in the brain, something clicked and I knew 00:27:59.75\00:28:06.79 that was preferable to the TV, because he had already talked 00:28:06.83\00:28:12.31 about TV addiction and how harmful that was. 00:28:12.34\00:28:15.55 So when I started, my 2 granddaughters, at the time 00:28:15.59\00:28:21.16 I didn't live and have the will to go out and look for CDs 00:28:21.20\00:28:24.47 or classical music. I knew nothing about it. 00:28:24.50\00:28:26.56 But, my 2 granddaughters had, a couple of years before, given me 00:28:26.66\00:28:32.45 2 CDs for my birthday 00:28:32.48\00:28:34.86 and I got them out, I seldom played them, I got them out and 00:28:34.90\00:28:39.46 started going to sleep each night to one of them that was 00:28:39.49\00:28:42.84 titled Starlight Classics. 00:28:42.87\00:28:44.57 And I found that I could sleep, I went to sleep and rested 00:28:44.60\00:28:49.70 for hours. If I woke up, I just turned the tape back on 00:28:49.73\00:28:54.82 and would listen and would fall back to sleep 00:28:54.85\00:28:58.03 and within a week I was enjoying the first full night 00:28:58.07\00:29:04.60 sleep I had in years. 00:29:04.63\00:29:06.26 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:29:06.29\00:29:09.14 It's so true. And even now if I fail to listen to them, 00:29:09.18\00:29:12.76 or if I get back into watching TV again I can feel my thoughts 00:29:12.80\00:29:19.37 getting scattered. It just makes a tremendous difference 00:29:19.40\00:29:22.64 It does. It's amazing how that alone helped me. 00:29:22.67\00:29:25.82 Well, you know it's interesting for Sandy. She wanted to sleep 00:29:25.92\00:29:29.55 all the time. For you, you had the opposite, where you're 00:29:29.58\00:29:32.15 having trouble sleeping. Yes. 00:29:32.18\00:29:33.76 And I know that they say that if you want to drive someone insane 00:29:33.80\00:29:38.16 that all you have to do is keep waking them up over and over 00:29:38.19\00:29:41.82 again, and we get a cognitive impairment. 00:29:41.85\00:29:45.45 Absolutely. I believe that that alone the sleep deprivation 00:29:45.49\00:29:50.25 alone contributed, perhaps the most to the whole problem. 00:29:50.29\00:29:55.02 I'm sure that Dr. Nedley is going to conform that 00:29:55.05\00:29:58.16 in just a moment. 00:29:58.19\00:29:59.16 I do want to add that this, getting up early, going out 00:29:59.18\00:30:04.34 and singing a lot is almost as good as the classical music. 00:30:04.37\00:30:09.50 Perhaps better 00:30:09.53\00:30:10.91 So now may I ask you something else, Colleen. 00:30:10.95\00:30:13.27 Do you get your meal early in the day, now? 00:30:13.31\00:30:15.60 I do and I visit with my neighbors. 00:30:15.63\00:30:17.70 Good. The Lord is so good. Thank you for coming and 00:30:17.74\00:30:20.02 and sharing with us today. Thank you. 00:30:20.05\00:30:22.61 Well, coming up next 00:30:22.64\00:30:23.71 we're going to talk to Dr. Neil Nedley again, 00:30:23.74\00:30:26.43 about what can be done for those who suffer from depression. 00:30:26.46\00:30:29.47 And then a little later we're going to be taking questions 00:30:29.51\00:30:32.48 from our live audience. So, please don't go away. 00:30:32.52\00:30:36.08 We're going to be talking about teenage pregnancy 00:30:42.42\00:30:45.00 We were together for almost a year. And we were in love 00:30:45.04\00:30:50.15 Looking for love in all the wrong places 00:30:50.75\00:30:53.87 I didn't know what to think I didn't know what to do 00:30:53.91\00:30:58.04 I'm sure my parents are going to be upset 00:30:58.07\00:31:01.73 Receiving acceptance from their peers. It's so important. 00:31:01.77\00:31:05.78 Wanted to fit in. It's so important. 00:31:05.81\00:31:08.14 Next week on Up Close 00:31:08.17\00:31:10.27 Don't miss it. 00:31:11.48\00:31:13.21 Welcome back to Up Close. 00:31:22.48\00:31:24.08 We are talking about depression, and we've heard from a couple 00:31:24.18\00:31:28.17 of people who have experienced this condition in their lives 00:31:28.21\00:31:32.08 Now, we're talking with dr. Neil Nedley, a practicing physician 00:31:32.11\00:31:35.95 of internal medicine at Nedley Clinics in Ardmore, Oklahoma. 00:31:35.98\00:31:40.49 Dr. Nedley, in your book: Depression and Way Out 00:31:40.52\00:31:44.63 you focus a lot on life style on life style changes: 00:31:44.67\00:31:48.71 on nutrition, on exercise, on getting plenty of the water and 00:31:48.75\00:31:54.46 sunshine. Is there any research to back up why these health 00:31:54.49\00:32:00.17 changes actually do improve the depression? 00:32:00.20\00:32:05.23 Yes. Absolutely. There is research. 00:32:05.26\00:32:07.09 Actually, we quote about 1000 different scientific references 00:32:07.13\00:32:11.16 in our book "Depression and Way Out". 00:32:11.19\00:32:13.53 And most of the time we just looking at an isolated factor 00:32:13.61\00:32:16.72 like omega 3, that we heard from Colleen. 00:32:16.75\00:32:19.96 And actually omega 3 increase and tryptophan increase 00:32:20.00\00:32:23.97 can significantly improve mood in depression 00:32:24.00\00:32:27.44 What's amazing about the program that these 2 ladies went through 00:32:27.48\00:32:33.54 is now been duplicated in many other places when we put 00:32:33.57\00:32:37.41 a combination of life style factors together 00:32:37.44\00:32:40.15 like nutrition and exercise and light and analyzing our thoughts 00:32:40.19\00:32:44.85 and getting ride of the sordid thoughts and actually improving 00:32:44.89\00:32:49.36 our spiritual focus, actually contemplating in the Word of God 00:32:49.39\00:32:53.83 which improves frontal lobe circulation 00:32:53.86\00:32:55.60 When all of those things are combined, we see dramatic 00:32:55.64\00:32:59.32 improvement that really is unprecedented in the medical 00:32:59.35\00:33:02.87 literature. People should not be getting better this quick, 00:33:02.91\00:33:06.40 according to the experts. 00:33:06.43\00:33:07.76 Nor should they be getting better and staying better 00:33:07.80\00:33:12.23 without relapsing back into depression 00:33:12.26\00:33:15.15 and so, the beautiful thing is when we put a combination of 00:33:15.19\00:33:18.41 these factors together we do see a more pronounced effect. 00:33:18.44\00:33:22.23 For audience tell us, because I know I have recommended 00:33:22.26\00:33:26.02 to several people and you mentioned the omega 3, Colleen 00:33:26.05\00:33:30.10 I've recommended to people that because of listening to you 00:33:30.13\00:33:34.06 that they would take English walnuts or even a better source 00:33:34.09\00:33:38.46 would be flax seed. What are some of, how does the omega 3 00:33:38.50\00:33:42.29 in tryptophan and what are some of the sources for tryptophan? 00:33:42.33\00:33:46.09 Yeah, tryptophan is turn into Serotonin and tryptophan is 00:33:46.12\00:33:49.72 going to be found in, actually flax seed has some tryptophan 00:33:49.75\00:33:53.32 in it, soy is an excellent source of tryptophan, 00:33:53.35\00:33:56.41 gluten flour which is the wheat a protein, is very high in 00:33:56.45\00:34:01.28 tryptophan, and there are other good sources of tryptophan 00:34:01.31\00:34:05.81 out there. 00:34:05.84\00:34:06.81 We like tryptophan combined with carbohydrates because 00:34:06.82\00:34:09.76 otherwise it doesn't get into the brain 00:34:09.79\00:34:11.11 Meat has some tryptophan in it too, but meat is very low in 00:34:11.15\00:34:14.59 carbohydrates. It's virtually deficient in carbohydrates. 00:34:14.63\00:34:18.04 And so, the tryptophan does not cross the blood brain barrier 00:34:18.07\00:34:21.62 and get into the brain. 00:34:21.65\00:34:22.62 So, let me make sure for our audience. I want to make sure 00:34:22.64\00:34:25.75 that I understand it, and the audience is getting this. 00:34:25.78\00:34:30.02 we have omega 3 fatty acids, when we have tryptophan 00:34:30.06\00:34:34.13 with carbohydrates. This is actually helping our body 00:34:34.16\00:34:38.20 to naturally produce serotonin. 00:34:38.23\00:34:40.77 Correct. 00:34:40.80\00:34:41.77 So, carbohydrates really got in the bad rap, haven't they? 00:34:41.78\00:34:44.66 They have gotten in the bad rap and unfortunately, you know, 00:34:44.70\00:34:48.35 some carbs are bad, the refined carbohydrates: the sugar, 00:34:48.38\00:34:52.18 the sodas, this type of things is not, you know, the best 00:34:52.21\00:34:56.29 and actually, this type of diet can lead to depression 00:34:56.33\00:35:01.11 But unfortunately, some of the more narrow extremes have 00:35:01.15\00:35:05.90 thrown out the baby with the bath water, and that means, 00:35:05.93\00:35:09.24 they've thrown out all the natural carbohydrates 00:35:09.28\00:35:11.56 and if you do that, you're going to be on a carbohydrate 00:35:11.59\00:35:14.22 deficient program 00:35:14.25\00:35:15.22 that's going to lead to poor frontal lobe circulation, 00:35:15.23\00:35:17.74 poor ability to make discipline decisions, and 00:35:17.77\00:35:21.49 actually lead to depression. 00:35:21.52\00:35:22.75 And that's another reason why depression is on the increase 00:35:22.79\00:35:25.83 simply because this low carb diets become pretty common 00:35:25.86\00:35:29.70 Now, what about the serotonin, what do they call it, reuptake 00:35:29.73\00:35:37.40 Yeah, the serotonin reuptake inhibitor, those are the drugs. 00:35:37.43\00:35:40.19 Ok, those are the drugs. 00:35:40.22\00:35:41.26 Is there any reason why a Christian shouldn't take 00:35:41.30\00:35:45.01 something? I mean, is there a time that is appropriate to take 00:35:45.04\00:35:47.94 those drugs? 00:35:47.97\00:35:48.94 There is a time that's appropriate to take those drugs 00:35:48.95\00:35:51.56 We recommend them in severe depression, as a jump start 00:35:51.59\00:35:54.37 to get the frontal lobe circulation improved 00:35:54.40\00:35:56.79 these drugs are can improve frontal lobe circulation 00:35:56.83\00:36:00.22 can help improve your ability to function so you can 00:36:00.25\00:36:02.98 incorporate some of these life style principles. 00:36:03.02\00:36:05.68 However we use them at a time limited approach where you know 00:36:05.72\00:36:10.67 we try to withdraw them within 6 months and often we are able 00:36:10.71\00:36:15.63 to withdraw them in 3-4 month. Once the person finds out 00:36:15.66\00:36:18.86 the underlined causes of depression in their life 00:36:18.89\00:36:20.91 we deal with those hit causes, and they are able to easily 00:36:20.95\00:36:24.25 withdraw from the drugs and not relapse back into depression 00:36:24.28\00:36:28.28 Sandy you said that you had gone to depression most of your life 00:36:28.31\00:36:32.28 You were living in depression. Did you take any of the 00:36:32.31\00:36:36.07 antidepressants to help you over the years? 00:36:36.10\00:36:39.68 Probably everyone out there. I've tried. 00:36:39.71\00:36:42.72 And is about 15 on the market right now. 00:36:42.76\00:36:45.74 I've tried several. 00:36:45.77\00:36:47.66 But none of those really worked for you It was when you got into 00:36:47.69\00:36:51.38 the life style changes, that's when you felt the difference. 00:36:51.41\00:36:55.09 Isn't that amazing? 00:36:55.12\00:36:56.64 Essentially what these antidepressants do, 00:36:56.68\00:37:01.10 they are treating the symptom but they are not treating the 00:37:01.13\00:37:04.78 underline cause. Is the correct? 00:37:04.81\00:37:05.86 And unfortunately they have side effects, they cause an 00:37:05.90\00:37:07.93 "I don't care" attitude, they increase impulsiveness which is 00:37:07.97\00:37:10.88 not a good thing. That's one of the reasons why suicide rates 00:37:10.92\00:37:13.73 go up at first in these drugs, because they are increasing 00:37:13.77\00:37:16.55 impulsiveness before they improve the depression 00:37:16.58\00:37:18.58 and so people need to be observed on this type of program 00:37:18.61\00:37:22.90 they really, they can cause an I don't care attitude, actually 00:37:22.94\00:37:26.30 decreasing motivation in some instances. 00:37:26.33\00:37:28.89 And so, that's why we're using a time limited approach and we're 00:37:28.93\00:37:32.33 trying to withdraws them from these drugs. 00:37:32.36\00:37:34.70 One of the taco messages I'd like the listening audience 00:37:34.74\00:37:38.08 to have, and actually the audience out here, is this 00:37:38.12\00:37:41.39 that there are many treatments for depression as there are 00:37:41.43\00:37:45.45 causes. That means there is over 150 proven scientific treatments 00:37:45.48\00:37:51.17 for depression and unfortunately the doctors and 00:37:51.20\00:37:55.64 the patients are going to learn about them necessarily 00:37:55.68\00:37:58.60 in the doctors office, because when a new drug comes out 00:37:58.64\00:38:01.75 for depression there is a nice good looking representative 00:38:01.78\00:38:05.37 coming to offer me lunch and offer me pens and maybe toys 00:38:05.40\00:38:08.96 with the drug name to take home to my children, but when 00:38:09.06\00:38:12.96 a certain type of exercise is been shown to benefit depression 00:38:13.00\00:38:15.87 there is no exercise physiologist coming to explain 00:38:15.90\00:38:18.96 to me this new study on how this type of exercise significantly 00:38:19.00\00:38:22.78 improves depression 00:38:22.81\00:38:23.85 By the way, there is a type of exercise that improves. 00:38:23.89\00:38:26.85 It's called intermittent training where IT significantly 00:38:26.88\00:38:29.81 better than other types of exercise 00:38:29.84\00:38:32.05 So the only way is to get into the scientific literature and 00:38:32.09\00:38:35.57 actually find out what the research on a lot of these 00:38:35.60\00:38:37.96 things has been and done, but there is not paid people to tell 00:38:38.00\00:38:41.93 you about that research. 00:38:41.96\00:38:43.21 So unless the doctor is done an exhaustive literature search 00:38:43.25\00:38:47.56 or unless they happen to go to the doctor and actually did the 00:38:47.60\00:38:51.88 research themselves on the exercise, they're probably not 00:38:51.91\00:38:54.65 going to find out about it. 00:38:54.68\00:38:55.82 When Colleen mentioned sleep depravation she also mentioned 00:38:55.86\00:39:00.66 that you are her personal physician and she was seeing you 00:39:00.70\00:39:05.47 for these many years and 00:39:05.50\00:39:06.89 yeah, she was seeing me for things other than depression 00:39:06.92\00:39:10.21 and she, like many depressed people, she covered it well 00:39:10.25\00:39:13.44 She had a smile on her face, seemed to enjoy talking to me 00:39:13.48\00:39:17.10 Many depressed people have learned to cover very well, 00:39:17.14\00:39:20.73 and so here I was, I've written a book about depression and she 00:39:20.83\00:39:24.22 didn't even tell me that she was depressed. 00:39:24.25\00:39:26.67 So, did she talk to you about her sleep depravation? 00:39:26.70\00:39:29.97 Or this was something that she just 00:39:30.00\00:39:32.24 No, no, never touched that, that subject, no. 00:39:32.28\00:39:35.60 Is that a common symptom? 00:39:35.63\00:39:36.65 We were treating her for primarily chest pain in some 00:39:36.69\00:39:40.10 of the associated symptoms. She had a disease called 00:39:40.14\00:39:43.48 costeo condritis information in a rib case and we're focused 00:39:43.52\00:39:48.05 in on that aspect of things. But yes, she finally did come to 00:39:48.08\00:39:51.89 the for front in regards to that, came to the program and 00:39:51.93\00:39:55.67 the wonderful thing, you know classical music she talked about 00:39:55.71\00:39:59.14 Starlight Classics. Colleen it was more that Starlight Classic 00:39:59.17\00:40:02.57 In the day time what did you listen to? 00:40:02.60\00:40:05.06 In the morning, my grandchildren gave me 2 CDs, and I used the 00:40:05.10\00:40:09.11 Starlight Classics to put me to sleep, then in the mornings 00:40:09.15\00:40:13.93 I used Power Classics to do my housework to do, and I never 00:40:13.97\00:40:18.26 missed those all day. The play is not all day but it plays 00:40:18.30\00:40:21.90 quite a bit. But Power Classics will get me motivated. 00:40:21.93\00:40:25.50 One of the most common myths about classical music is that 00:40:25.61\00:40:29.10 it is boring. And actually there is more varieties of 00:40:29.13\00:40:33.87 classical music than there are of all the other types of music 00:40:33.91\00:40:37.32 combined. 00:40:37.35\00:40:38.32 So actually, you know, if you are a rock and roller you're 00:40:38.33\00:40:41.70 in a very narrow limited sphere of music. 00:40:41.73\00:40:44.63 And it's interesting is paradoxical on the same sense. 00:40:44.66\00:40:48.36 Some people think that the vegetarian diet is going to be 00:40:48.39\00:40:52.08 limiting as well. 00:40:52.11\00:40:53.17 Well, actually study shows the average vegetarian has a lot 00:40:53.21\00:40:56.63 more variety to there diet than the average American meat eater 00:40:56.66\00:41:00.05 And the same is true with classical music. 00:41:00.08\00:41:01.92 You can have a lot more variety to your music, depending on the 00:41:02.22\00:41:05.90 time of the day and the night and what effect you're trying to 00:41:05.94\00:41:09.59 get into the brain than any of the other types of music 00:41:09.62\00:41:12.07 combined. And that's why the study's showing some significant 00:41:12.11\00:41:15.08 benefit with classical music. 00:41:15.29\00:41:16.95 You know, we're getting ready in just a moment to go to our 00:41:16.99\00:41:20.97 live audience, and we're going to take some questions. 00:41:21.00\00:41:23.02 But I feel, I'm so sad that this is going by so quickly. 00:41:23.13\00:41:26.75 We'd love to get in and I hope when you're asking your 00:41:26.78\00:41:30.71 questions that we can talk about, talk therapy about 00:41:30.75\00:41:34.65 reprogramming and renewing our minds. 00:41:34.68\00:41:37.16 I just feel like we are barely scraping on the surface of 00:41:37.19\00:41:42.03 this topic. 00:41:42.06\00:41:43.26 But, please stay tuned because in just a moment we are going to 00:41:43.30\00:41:46.77 our live audience to take some questions. 00:41:46.80\00:41:49.07 Are you or someone you love, struggling with depression? 00:41:53.36\00:41:56.09 Are you looking for a way out from the debts of despair? 00:41:56.13\00:41:58.83 If so, we have just the book for you. 00:41:58.86\00:42:00.86 Find life and hope as you read the Ultimate Survivor. 00:42:00.90\00:42:03.94 The leaflet includes a set of recipes specifically designed 00:42:03.98\00:42:06.46 for those struggling with depression. 00:42:06.49\00:42:08.06 For your free gift just write to us today at 00:42:08.10\00:42:10.69 Welcome back to Up Close! 00:42:33.95\00:42:35.51 We're talking today about how to deal with depression and now 00:42:35.55\00:42:39.23 we're going to be taking some questions from our audience 00:42:39.26\00:42:42.91 So, please come on down and tell us what your name is 00:42:42.95\00:42:46.59 Hi. My name is Eddie Millington and I'm from here, in Huston TX. 00:42:49.25\00:42:52.72 My question is, actually it's not a question. 00:42:52.75\00:42:55.64 It's just a request for you to explain a little bit more about 00:42:55.67\00:42:59.30 intimate training the exercise program you alluded to earlier 00:42:59.34\00:43:02.75 Ok. That's a good question. Intimating training is a where 00:43:02.79\00:43:07.42 you exercise vigorously for about 45 seconds and then you 00:43:07.46\00:43:12.06 rest for about 45 seconds. And as you get more fit 00:43:12.09\00:43:16.53 you won't have to rest completely You might do a sprint 00:43:16.57\00:43:19.29 and then a walk, and alternate back and forth 00:43:19.32\00:43:22.55 There are some sophisticated ways in which we can do this 00:43:22.59\00:43:26.04 while measuring the heart rate. We want to get your heart rate 00:43:26.08\00:43:29.73 up to a certain level and then we alternate it by a 10 bit 00:43:29.76\00:43:33.38 level, where when it gets to a certain level you stop 00:43:33.41\00:43:36.99 exercising, then when it goes 10 bits lower you start 00:43:37.02\00:43:40.53 exercising, so you can do it based on your heart rate as well 00:43:40.57\00:43:44.53 And your exercise maintains its aerobic-ness during this time. 00:43:44.57\00:43:48.50 So even rest count as exercise, which is some of the, 00:43:48.53\00:43:52.14 one of the nice things about it. And what, our study shows is 00:43:52.18\00:43:55.71 that improves steroid levels significantly compared to other 00:43:55.75\00:43:59.25 forms of exercise. 00:43:59.28\00:44:00.55 The regular, just go out there and do it, no pain, I mean 00:44:00.58\00:44:04.75 if there if you're not suffering you're not going to be gaining 00:44:04.79\00:44:07.64 that is not true. It's a myth: no pain, no gain 00:44:07.67\00:44:10.97 Intimating training really helps beyond the typical exercise. 00:44:11.01\00:44:16.15 That's good. Hi, tell us your name and your question, please. 00:44:16.35\00:44:19.70 I'm Grace McClure and I'm from Huston and I was worrying about 00:44:19.90\00:44:24.72 the electric shock therapy that's used in depression now 00:44:24.75\00:44:28.83 Ok. You see, the electric shock therapy's actually inducing a 00:44:28.87\00:44:33.14 seizure to treat depression and has been shown to be helpful in 00:44:33.17\00:44:37.01 severe forms of depression, but the side effects a significant 00:44:37.05\00:44:40.86 You have memory gaps that you'll never get back 00:44:40.89\00:44:43.87 and these can be memories all the way back from childhood 00:44:43.91\00:44:48.10 long term memory, there are holes over there 00:44:48.13\00:44:52.37 The natural form of ECT is contrast hydrotherapy 00:44:52.41\00:44:56.58 that's where you soak in a hot tub or in a hot shower 00:44:56.62\00:45:00.49 for 3 minutes and then you get very cold water for about 00:45:00.52\00:45:04.30 a minute. And you alternate back and forth for a total of 00:45:04.34\00:45:08.09 3 cycles. 00:45:08.12\00:45:09.22 And if you do that and then just rest a little bit after 00:45:09.26\00:45:12.03 and do that twice a day for about 3-4 days, 00:45:12.06\00:45:14.79 you are going to start feeling significantly better by 00:45:14.83\00:45:17.33 day 3 or 4 and it's actually pretty wonderful 00:45:17.36\00:45:21.35 We just experienced this when someone here was going to go 00:45:21.46\00:45:24.27 for ECT and she said it was dramatic the effect 00:45:24.30\00:45:28.40 it had on her. 00:45:28.43\00:45:29.75 And no loss of memory. 00:45:29.79\00:45:31.57 Exactly 00:45:31.60\00:45:32.57 Hi, please tell us your name and your question 00:45:32.58\00:45:34.85 Hell. My name is Antonio Tatti I'm from Ecuador and I'd like 00:45:34.89\00:45:40.05 to ask dr. Nedley about how you handle those patients that 00:45:40.09\00:45:46.76 are out there, they're obese or overweight and you said that 00:45:46.80\00:45:53.44 carb diet How do you handle this situation with the carb diet 00:45:53.47\00:45:58.78 in obese patients? 00:45:58.81\00:46:01.27 Ok. That's a good question. 00:46:01.31\00:46:03.12 A lot of people think the only way to treat obesity 00:46:03.15\00:46:05.46 is a low carb diet. 00:46:05.49\00:46:08.30 And actually that is not true. In fact there is now 00:46:08.34\00:46:11.18 studies indicating that the best way to treat obesity is a 00:46:11.22\00:46:14.31 combination of exercise and a lower calorie diet. 00:46:14.34\00:46:17.98 It's really low in fat that's even more important than low in 00:46:18.02\00:46:22.60 carbohydrates as far as treating is concerned. 00:46:22.84\00:46:25.55 And obesity can actually be one of the factors, it can be 00:46:25.59\00:46:28.32 one of the hits. It's a medical condition hit that can lead 00:46:28.35\00:46:31.38 to depression, and so we're continuing to put people on 00:46:31.41\00:46:34.44 a lower calorie regimen, that still has enough tryptophan 00:46:34.47\00:46:37.71 still has enough omega 3, enough carbohydrates so they'll 00:46:37.75\00:46:40.96 significantly loose weight. 00:46:40.99\00:46:42.25 But at the same time, come out of their depression. 00:46:42.29\00:46:45.40 Before we go off of this let me ask you: 00:46:45.43\00:46:47.73 Sugar has very negative effect on our brain. Is that true? 00:46:47.77\00:46:51.39 Yes, sugar has a negative effect because of the rebound 00:46:51.42\00:46:55.01 Our pancreas secrets a lot of insulin. 00:46:55.04\00:46:57.95 We get mildly hypoglycemic within 30 minutes of eating 00:46:57.99\00:47:01.38 a candy bar and then it takes 4 hours for our frontal lobe 00:47:01.41\00:47:04.93 to come back from that. 00:47:04.96\00:47:06.50 And so that's why we recommend getting rid of the refined 00:47:06.54\00:47:09.44 carbohydrates, but the natural carbohydrates are very good 00:47:09.47\00:47:13.07 They come with a lot of fiber. You can it a lot of natural 00:47:13.11\00:47:16.68 carbohydrates without gaining weight. 00:47:16.71\00:47:18.77 Thank you. Hi, please tell us your name and your question. 00:47:18.81\00:47:22.35 My name is Bill Blensed, and I'm from Huston, Texas. 00:47:22.38\00:47:26.70 My question is: Sunlight, it makes me I guess lethargic 00:47:26.74\00:47:31.03 and sometimes it makes me want to take a nap 00:47:31.06\00:47:32.71 so sometimes I darken the room when I'm about to work 00:47:32.75\00:47:35.38 or sometimes I work better at night. 00:47:35.41\00:47:37.77 So I just want to know: is there an explanation for that? or 00:47:37.81\00:47:42.53 is something that I can do to be more effective in the sunlight 00:47:42.57\00:47:45.21 Well, too much sunlight or too brighter light can over time 00:47:45.24\00:47:48.79 produce too much serotonin which does have a calming effect 00:47:48.83\00:47:52.35 a more sedating effect. That's why if you're out on the beach 00:47:52.38\00:47:55.37 for all day, you don't really fell like doing anything after 00:47:55.40\00:47:58.38 that time period. Because you've got almost an overload 00:47:58.41\00:48:01.74 on the light. The sunlight needs to be used in moderation 00:48:01.78\00:48:05.04 but there is one other principle that you need to keep in mind 00:48:05.08\00:48:07.96 and that is: most depressed people describe themselves 00:48:07.99\00:48:11.25 as night time people. 00:48:11.28\00:48:12.47 They'll start raving up, 9, 10, 11 o'clock and feel great at 2am 00:48:12.51\00:48:16.87 if they stay up that late. 00:48:16.90\00:48:18.06 Unfortunately, however they do have to go to sleep and 00:48:18.10\00:48:22.16 they'll feel like zombies again. 00:48:22.19\00:48:23.86 And those people need to have their body clocks reset. 00:48:23.90\00:48:26.84 So if you're describing yourself as a night time person, 00:48:26.87\00:48:29.78 it's not genetics at all. 00:48:29.81\00:48:31.12 It's actually based on the circadian rhythm head 00:48:31.16\00:48:33.86 and you need to get your circadian rhythms back in line 00:48:33.90\00:48:36.14 and get that light therapy in the morning 00:48:36.17\00:48:37.84 and then you'll be raved up in the day time and when it's time 00:48:37.88\00:48:40.88 time to go to sleep you'll be ready to go to sleep 00:48:40.91\00:48:42.73 Hi, Thank you for coming and please tell us 00:48:42.77\00:48:46.64 what your name is and your question 00:48:46.68\00:48:48.15 Yes. My name is Lirma Okeblam. I'm from Huston. 00:48:48.18\00:48:51.14 My question is: it seems like there are more women suffering 00:48:51.18\00:48:55.18 from depression compared to men What are the percentages like? 00:48:55.28\00:49:00.39 And are the treatments about the same for both sexes? 00:49:00.42\00:49:05.15 Ok. Yeah. Twice as many women suffer from depression than men 00:49:05.19\00:49:10.20 And a lot of it is due to the women's hormones that we 00:49:10.23\00:49:13.94 discussed earlier, but also it has to do we the plate women 00:49:14.04\00:49:20.07 as well. it has to do with the fact that they are the primarily 00:49:20.11\00:49:26.09 caregivers from infancy and up. They tend to have 20 different 00:49:26.13\00:49:30.43 responsibilities at least that they're juggling in the day's 00:49:30.46\00:49:34.73 time where a man can focuses in on maybe 2 or 3. 00:49:34.76\00:49:38.79 And so, those types of things produce different hits 00:49:38.82\00:49:42.78 on the brain and that's make it a little more likely for women 00:49:42.82\00:49:46.14 to suffer from depression. 00:49:46.17\00:49:47.37 The treatments are different? yes, of course the hormonal 00:49:47.41\00:49:50.63 treatments are going to be a little different, but in reality 00:49:50.66\00:49:53.74 we do the same thing for both sexes and that is we find the 00:49:53.78\00:49:57.25 underlined hits and then we treat those underlined hits. 00:49:57.29\00:50:00.69 And for women they might have more hits to treat, but once we 00:50:00.73\00:50:03.70 get the hits down to less than 3 they're going to do a whole lot 00:50:03.74\00:50:06.68 better. 00:50:06.71\00:50:07.68 Hi. Please tell us what your name is and your question 00:50:07.70\00:50:10.87 Hi. My name is Xavier Castillo from Huston. I wanted to ask 00:50:10.90\00:50:15.28 dr. Nedley: what's your opinion on St. John's wart as a 00:50:15.32\00:50:19.69 treatment for mild to moderate depression? 00:50:19.72\00:50:23.24 St. John's wart is helpful for mild to moderate depression 00:50:23.28\00:50:27.18 It's probably the most studied herb out there for depression 00:50:27.21\00:50:30.88 however there is very convincing evidence that it's not helpful 00:50:30.92\00:50:34.56 for serious depression, for severe, serious depression 00:50:34.59\00:50:38.30 and we would actually recommend some other herbs 00:50:38.40\00:50:41.37 over St. John's wart in that instance. Sam e for instance 00:50:41.41\00:50:44.19 can be much more helpful for severe depression. 00:50:44.29\00:50:46.88 And there are other herbs that can be helpful such as 00:50:46.92\00:50:50.10 5 HTP and Ginkgo Biloba 00:50:50.13\00:50:52.25 Another problem with St. John's wart is it interacts with a lot 00:50:52.29\00:50:55.99 of different medicines. So you really can't use it with other 00:50:56.02\00:50:59.69 medicines like you can with SAMe or 5 HTP 00:50:59.72\00:51:02.48 Hi, welcome to the program. Please tell us your name 00:51:02.52\00:51:06.78 and your question 00:51:06.81\00:51:07.78 Hi. My name is Belinda Lemon and I'm from Huston and my 00:51:07.79\00:51:11.84 question was: Is depression something that reoccurs? 00:51:11.87\00:51:15.89 after you are cured? 00:51:15.92\00:51:17.50 It can reoccur. Actually the relapse rates are quite high 00:51:17.53\00:51:21.34 in the typical American setting. The average American that 00:51:21.38\00:51:24.79 suffers from major depression, once they withdraw from 00:51:24.82\00:51:28.16 antidepressants, well over half of them were going to relapse 00:51:28.20\00:51:31.63 within a year. 00:51:31.66\00:51:32.63 Some of them will relapse very quickly and this is why people 00:51:32.64\00:51:35.76 think they need to take their antidepressants like their 00:51:35.79\00:51:38.49 morning vitamins, cause they think they have this chemical 00:51:38.52\00:51:41.19 imbalanced that is not going to be helped unless they take 00:51:41.39\00:51:45.05 this drug. 00:51:45.08\00:51:46.20 Well, in reality if they get to the underlined cause 00:51:46.24\00:51:49.61 of depression, they won't need the medication at all. 00:51:49.65\00:51:52.99 The neurotransmitters will be in plentiful amount. 00:51:53.02\00:51:56.57 And there is no need to relapse 00:51:56.60\00:51:58.80 Our experience in our clinic is that once we find the 00:51:58.84\00:52:02.48 underlined cause of depression, there is a 90% chance that 00:52:02.51\00:52:06.19 that person will not relapse back into depression again. 00:52:06.23\00:52:09.90 even after they are off the medication 00:52:09.93\00:52:12.80 And that of course is something that significant, but it helps 00:52:12.84\00:52:16.96 us to realize treating the underlined cause the underlined 00:52:17.00\00:52:21.09 hits is the answer to this problem. 00:52:21.12\00:52:24.01 Drug therapy is not the final answer 00:52:24.04\00:52:26.86 And basically your program is designed around the 8 health 00:52:26.90\00:52:31.79 principles, right? Nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, 00:52:31.82\00:52:37.69 temperance, good air, rest and trusting in God, right? 00:52:37.72\00:52:42.20 All of those principles have actually been shown to be 00:52:42.24\00:52:46.12 helpful and rigorous scientific studies for depression. 00:52:46.16\00:52:50.01 So, the Lord developed all of this. 00:52:50.04\00:52:52.93 We've got 2 minutes to get some final thoughts from you. 00:52:52.97\00:52:57.11 If you would, I would like to ask you about the frontal lobe 00:52:57.14\00:53:01.52 and I also would like to ask you to mention about your 14 00:53:01.55\00:53:05.90 consecutive days of positive thinking. 00:53:05.93\00:53:09.18 Thank you. The frontal lobe is what we really haven't covered 00:53:09.22\00:53:12.41 and this the most exciting area of depression. 00:53:12.44\00:53:15.08 There is one thing that's characteristic to virtually any 00:53:15.12\00:53:18.34 depressed patient: and that is they have a 40% decrease in 00:53:18.38\00:53:21.38 circulation activity in the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:53:21.41\00:53:24.40 We find this in pat scans. The frontal lobe is where 00:53:24.44\00:53:27.43 spirituality, morality and the will is centered. 00:53:27.47\00:53:30.39 And so this is why the spiritual part, such as reading 00:53:30.43\00:53:34.69 the book of Proverbs, reading Psalms, reading the Scripture 00:53:34.72\00:53:39.24 and not just reading it, but contemplating on it, can 00:53:39.27\00:53:42.39 dramatically improve frontal lobe function and actually 00:53:42.42\00:53:45.51 significantly improve depression. 00:53:45.54\00:53:48.14 This is why the classical music which has a very positive effect 00:53:48.18\00:53:51.52 on the frontal lobe can be very helpful as well 00:53:51.55\00:53:55.25 And this is also why cognitive behavioral therapy is helpful 00:53:55.29\00:54:00.22 Traditional forms of counseling or psycho-therapy have never 00:54:00.25\00:54:05.15 been shown to be better than taking a placebo pill in 00:54:05.18\00:54:08.01 treating depression. I don't know if you caught that at all 00:54:08.05\00:54:11.01 but traditional forms of counseling what psychologists do 00:54:11.04\00:54:13.93 on a day by day basis is never been shown to be superior taking 00:54:13.97\00:54:17.32 a placebo, but there is a type of therapy that is superior 00:54:17.36\00:54:20.68 it's called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, 00:54:20.74\00:54:22.52 the psychology we're going to catch up on this 00:54:22.56\00:54:25.39 and what is this? It actually helps us to recognize our 00:54:25.43\00:54:29.18 distorted thoughts. 00:54:29.21\00:54:30.18 Another thing that's virtually characteristic to every 00:54:30.19\00:54:32.58 depressed patient is that they have significant distortions in 00:54:32.62\00:54:36.72 in their thoughts processes. 00:54:36.75\00:54:37.93 They have, their thoughts are based on elements of truths. 00:54:37.97\00:54:41.94 But they go beyond those elements of truth and 00:54:41.97\00:54:45.88 actually dwell on distortions and it's the dwelling on 00:54:45.91\00:54:48.77 distortions that helps bring about the depression 00:54:48.80\00:54:52.11 And so we teach them the 10 cognitive distortions. 00:54:52.14\00:54:56.32 such as over-generalization and mental filter and this 00:54:56.35\00:55:00.50 mental filter tends to focus in on the negative. 00:55:00.53\00:55:02.68 And one of the ways in which we get them focusing on things 00:55:02.72\00:55:06.25 that are not so negative is one of the practices in our 00:55:06.29\00:55:09.79 depression recovery program: 14 consecutive days without 00:55:09.82\00:55:12.85 saying anything negative or critical about anyone or 00:55:12.89\00:55:15.81 anything. 00:55:15.84\00:55:16.81 Now, when they have found out about this they thought 00:55:16.82\00:55:19.42 I came here to relieve stress This is really going to increase 00:55:19.46\00:55:23.42 my stress level. But, in reality once they tried it, it does 00:55:23.45\00:55:27.38 produce a transformation because it helps them to get 00:55:27.41\00:55:31.05 there're circuits going in the brain they're either neutral or 00:55:31.09\00:55:34.33 positive and helps to overdue the negative. 00:55:34.36\00:55:37.06 And then once they catch themselves in the thought 00:55:37.10\00:55:39.19 processes over generalizing or disqualifying the positive 00:55:39.22\00:55:43.83 or magnification or minimization or mind reading, this type of 00:55:43.87\00:55:49.36 things they can catch themselves in that thought process 00:55:49.39\00:55:52.52 and replace their thoughts with truth 00:55:52.55\00:55:55.24 and interestingly Christ Himself says: when you know 00:55:55.28\00:55:58.59 the truth, the truth will set you free. 00:55:58.62\00:56:01.19 And that means the truth in the heart, not just expressing 00:56:01.23\00:56:04.99 it outwardly but knowing and actually having our thoughts 00:56:05.03\00:56:08.72 lying up with things that are absolutely true and not going on 00:56:08.76\00:56:12.23 the basis of assumptions which many depressed people do. 00:56:12.26\00:56:15.30 Amen. Oh, thank you so much. 00:56:15.33\00:56:18.49 We just really want to thank our guests today: Sandy Williams 00:56:18.53\00:56:22.39 and Colleen Harrell and dr. Please get them some help.
