I do. 00:01:01.69\00:01:04.53 And you're passionate about it. 00:01:04.56\00:01:06.23 And it really shines forth. 00:01:06.26\00:01:07.60 So I just want to jump into your journey. 00:01:07.63\00:01:10.77 Tell us a little bit about your health journey? 00:01:10.80\00:01:14.70 My personal health journey grew up 00:01:14.74\00:01:16.84 in a healthy environment, a blue zone, 00:01:16.87\00:01:19.74 one of the blue zones in the world 00:01:19.77\00:01:21.18 and mine happened to be Loma Linda, California. 00:01:21.21\00:01:23.75 Now explain what a blue zone is for those that don't know? 00:01:23.78\00:01:26.38 Yeah, blue zone is where they have found 00:01:26.41\00:01:28.98 that a considerable population community of people 00:01:29.02\00:01:32.99 actually live to past 100 years of age, 00:01:33.02\00:01:35.82 they have low chronic disease 00:01:35.86\00:01:37.73 and you know, they look for what is it about them? 00:01:37.76\00:01:40.70 What is it about this community that has produced 00:01:40.73\00:01:44.80 such amazing results in terms of 00:01:44.83\00:01:46.87 you know, aged, healthy, etc. 00:01:46.90\00:01:49.04 And they found them 00:01:49.07\00:01:50.41 in different places in the world, 00:01:50.44\00:01:51.77 but Loma Linda, California was one of them. 00:01:51.81\00:01:53.41 And so being raised in that environment 00:01:53.44\00:01:57.05 and immersed with some of those qualities 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.81 of good health definitely were in my home. 00:01:59.85\00:02:02.45 So I was really blessed to have that experience 00:02:02.48\00:02:06.35 and just the atmosphere 00:02:06.39\00:02:07.86 that health was super important. 00:02:07.89\00:02:09.89 And it is. 00:02:09.92\00:02:11.26 I see health is so integral to happiness. 00:02:11.29\00:02:16.23 Did you ever have any challenges 00:02:16.26\00:02:17.73 along the way in your health journey? 00:02:17.77\00:02:19.20 Yeah, I did. 00:02:19.23\00:02:20.57 And some of them were intestinal and digestive. 00:02:20.60\00:02:23.41 Okay. 00:02:23.44\00:02:24.77 I've always been super starry eyed about food, 00:02:24.81\00:02:27.41 you know, just like love food, foodie, I enjoy it so much. 00:02:27.44\00:02:32.01 But sometimes it didn't always agree with me. 00:02:32.05\00:02:34.75 And trying to find some of the answers to that 00:02:34.78\00:02:37.95 probably led me on my path. 00:02:37.99\00:02:40.26 Got you. 00:02:40.29\00:02:41.66 And so that's how you overcame those obstacles. 00:02:41.69\00:02:44.79 How did you overcome those obstacles? 00:02:44.83\00:02:47.03 Yeah, I actually started learning about holistic health. 00:02:47.06\00:02:50.57 What it meant to be healthy, like whole person 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.67 and I just started implementing those things 00:02:53.70\00:02:56.27 that were important. 00:02:56.30\00:02:57.74 So we always think of just nutrition, 00:02:57.77\00:02:59.81 but it's not just nutrition, right? 00:02:59.84\00:03:01.54 There's a lot of other components 00:03:01.58\00:03:03.18 as I implemented them in my lifestyle, 00:03:03.21\00:03:06.31 they resulted in a healthier me. 00:03:06.35\00:03:08.38 Yes. 00:03:08.42\00:03:09.75 Now, what role did your faith play in your health journey? 00:03:09.78\00:03:14.36 That's a good question. 00:03:14.39\00:03:15.86 That was huge. 00:03:15.89\00:03:17.23 I love the fact that God says, "Beloved, 00:03:17.26\00:03:21.03 I wish above all things 00:03:21.06\00:03:22.40 that you would prosper and be in health, 00:03:22.43\00:03:23.77 even as your soul prospers." 00:03:23.80\00:03:25.13 So in other words, 00:03:25.17\00:03:26.50 He's really has my best interest at stake, 00:03:26.53\00:03:29.34 the whole me, right? 00:03:29.37\00:03:30.71 He wants me to be saved, 00:03:30.74\00:03:32.07 but He also wants me to have a happy, healthy, 00:03:32.11\00:03:35.01 you know, comfortable existence on this earth 00:03:35.04\00:03:36.75 as much as possible and that 00:03:36.78\00:03:38.11 He would have the answers. 00:03:38.15\00:03:39.48 And so when I started looking, 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.38 because there's so much information 00:03:41.42\00:03:42.75 out there in terms of 00:03:42.78\00:03:44.29 what it is that makes us healthy. 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.35 I turned to the word first. 00:03:46.39\00:03:47.89 And that really gave me a foundation by which I sifted 00:03:47.92\00:03:50.93 and, you know, saw everything else through. 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.06 Amen. Amen. 00:03:53.09\00:03:54.76 So if people want to boost their immune system, 00:03:54.80\00:03:58.37 if they want to achieve optimal health, 00:03:58.40\00:04:00.84 what should they do? 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.50 That's another really good question. 00:04:02.54\00:04:04.21 And I think that when people ask that question, 00:04:04.24\00:04:06.71 they're thinking, "Ah, give me the latest supplement, 00:04:06.74\00:04:10.45 pill, herb, you know, what can I do, 00:04:10.48\00:04:13.25 take, swallow that will make my immune system 00:04:13.28\00:04:16.38 really strong and powerful." 00:04:16.42\00:04:17.75 A quick fix. A quick fix. 00:04:17.79\00:04:19.12 Yeah. Right? 00:04:19.15\00:04:20.49 Yes. 00:04:20.52\00:04:21.86 But I don't really have a quick fix. 00:04:21.89\00:04:23.22 I mean, I could share with you, oh, take, I don't know, 00:04:23.26\00:04:24.76 vitamin C, Echinacea, you know, vitamin D, 00:04:24.79\00:04:27.93 all these things that are good for us. 00:04:27.96\00:04:29.90 But they're not going to do what, 00:04:29.93\00:04:33.44 again, a bigger picture, bigger approach is going to do. 00:04:33.47\00:04:36.57 They're not going to have the same results 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.17 that you could, if you looked a little bit deeper. 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.28 And that's kind of what I would love 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.11 to be able to do with you today 00:04:42.14\00:04:43.51 is look a little bit deeper 00:04:43.55\00:04:44.95 as to what is our immune system. 00:04:44.98\00:04:47.72 And it's not like 00:04:47.75\00:04:49.08 I am some immune system specialist. 00:04:49.12\00:04:52.42 But as a dietitian, I see the world 00:04:52.45\00:04:54.96 through the gut through the digestive tract, 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.13 and it's absolutely fascinating to me 00:04:57.16\00:04:59.86 that our digestive tract is inhabited 00:04:59.89\00:05:03.33 with trillions of microbes. 00:05:03.37\00:05:05.97 Trillions? Yes. 00:05:06.00\00:05:07.57 Wow. Yeah, trillions. 00:05:07.60\00:05:09.20 So we're talking virus, bacteria, 00:05:09.24\00:05:12.01 fungi and other microbes that inhabit us. 00:05:12.04\00:05:17.15 It's so interesting, Jason, 00:05:17.18\00:05:18.51 because there's actually so much more of them 00:05:18.55\00:05:22.15 than human DNA. 00:05:22.18\00:05:23.79 In other words, when I think of who Jason is, 00:05:23.82\00:05:26.52 you'd be like, "Yeah, I'm human, right?" 00:05:26.55\00:05:28.79 But really, the majority of what composes who you are, 00:05:28.82\00:05:32.29 if we were to count all the individual cells, 00:05:32.33\00:05:34.70 you're more microbe than human. 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.80 Wow! 00:05:36.83\00:05:38.17 Yeah, it's a wild thought. It is. 00:05:38.20\00:05:39.83 I'm basically a walking microbe. 00:05:39.87\00:05:41.60 You are a walking microbe and it's so interesting, 00:05:41.64\00:05:43.94 because we've been raised in this germ theory, 00:05:43.97\00:05:45.87 where we're like, oh, bacteria, 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.34 you know, stay away, virus, uh-uh, keep it. 00:05:48.38\00:05:51.61 And yet, we don't realize, but that's part of who I am. 00:05:51.65\00:05:54.02 Wow! 00:05:54.05\00:05:55.38 You know, so if we take that into consideration, 00:05:55.42\00:05:59.49 then our understanding of the, 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.82 how the immune system function can enlarge 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.76 because in reality, the immune system 00:06:03.79\00:06:05.53 doesn't function in an isolated manner, 00:06:05.56\00:06:08.76 where it does its thing 00:06:08.80\00:06:10.80 and then the rest of my body can do its thing. 00:06:10.83\00:06:13.07 It's actually intimately connected 00:06:13.10\00:06:15.70 with our hormone system, 00:06:15.74\00:06:18.07 we call it our endocrine system, 00:06:18.11\00:06:19.44 our nervous system, 00:06:19.47\00:06:20.81 but it's also really intimately connected 00:06:20.84\00:06:22.88 with our microbiome. 00:06:22.91\00:06:24.81 Wow. Now, what is the microbiome? 00:06:24.85\00:06:26.85 Yeah, so that's the term microbiome microbiota. 00:06:26.88\00:06:30.49 That's the term that's given for what I call the community. 00:06:30.52\00:06:34.52 And it's just a community of various different unique 00:06:34.56\00:06:38.93 individual strains, 00:06:38.96\00:06:40.80 species of microbes, 00:06:40.83\00:06:43.43 we mentioned bacteria, virus, fungi, etc. 00:06:43.47\00:06:45.97 That live on and within us, 00:06:46.00\00:06:49.40 they literally are stationed, 00:06:49.44\00:06:52.07 the majority of them are stationed on all of our, 00:06:52.11\00:06:54.71 what's called our mucosal linings. 00:06:54.74\00:06:57.15 And when you think of a mucosal lining 00:06:57.18\00:06:58.81 I need to do is open your mouth. 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.65 Got you. Okay. 00:07:00.68\00:07:02.02 And you see this, 00:07:02.05\00:07:03.39 oh, it's wet, kind of slippery, right? 00:07:03.42\00:07:05.25 All the way down. 00:07:05.29\00:07:06.62 So every entrance into our body, 00:07:06.65\00:07:08.22 our nose, our ears, 00:07:08.26\00:07:10.53 they're all lined with this mucosal tissue. 00:07:10.56\00:07:14.53 And that mucosal tissue is an excellent place to live 00:07:14.56\00:07:19.20 for all these microbes. 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.97 So these microbes live not only in my intestines, 00:07:21.00\00:07:25.07 but they live, for example, in my respiratory tract. 00:07:25.11\00:07:27.94 Wow. 00:07:27.98\00:07:29.31 We think of our lungs as sterile 00:07:29.34\00:07:31.18 or we think everything is, 00:07:31.21\00:07:32.78 there's nothing sterile about us, you know? 00:07:32.81\00:07:35.95 And so take an example of a virus. 00:07:35.98\00:07:41.16 Okay. We breathe it in, right? 00:07:41.19\00:07:43.19 So, we breathe in this virus 00:07:43.22\00:07:45.49 and it lands on the mucosal surface 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.43 of our lungs. 00:07:47.46\00:07:48.80 Okay. Okay. 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.17 So there it lands. 00:07:50.20\00:07:51.53 Well, it's not alone. 00:07:51.57\00:07:52.90 Because surrounding it, lining, living in this mucosal lining 00:07:52.93\00:07:57.94 are all these trillions of microbes. 00:07:57.97\00:08:01.08 So it lands there 00:08:01.11\00:08:03.24 and how does my immune system 00:08:03.28\00:08:06.25 know which one's friend and which one's foe? 00:08:06.28\00:08:09.58 Right? 00:08:09.62\00:08:10.95 Excellent question, how does it? 00:08:10.99\00:08:12.32 Yeah. So one's an invader, right? 00:08:12.35\00:08:14.76 The virus is the invader, but the other ones are there. 00:08:14.79\00:08:17.06 And they are living in this what we call it 00:08:17.09\00:08:19.09 a symbiotic relationship with us 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.10 where there it's like mutually beneficial. 00:08:21.13\00:08:23.90 They're actually benefiting us. 00:08:23.93\00:08:25.53 We couldn't survive without these microbes 00:08:25.57\00:08:28.50 that we that are composed of who we are, 00:08:28.54\00:08:32.41 who we are is composed of them. 00:08:32.44\00:08:33.78 It's kind of weird. 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.14 You know, we think of it as them and us, 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.51 but it's not, it's really we're all, 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.88 it's all just me. 00:08:37.91\00:08:39.25 Anyway, so this virus lands on the lungs 00:08:39.28\00:08:42.55 and the microbes that surround it 00:08:42.58\00:08:46.69 are actually the eyes and ears of the immune system. 00:08:46.72\00:08:50.76 So if you went to like some big concert. 00:08:50.79\00:08:54.30 Okay. 00:08:54.33\00:08:55.66 Where there was so many people, 00:08:55.70\00:08:57.03 just hundreds and hundreds of people, right? 00:08:57.07\00:08:58.50 They're all standing. 00:08:58.53\00:08:59.87 But one of them, you find out one of them 00:08:59.90\00:09:01.60 has a gun and is there to do harm. 00:09:01.64\00:09:03.91 And there's some security guards there. 00:09:03.94\00:09:06.01 But there's way more people than there is security guards. 00:09:06.04\00:09:08.71 How's the security guard going to find that one person 00:09:08.74\00:09:12.18 who is a terrorist? 00:09:12.21\00:09:14.45 You know, that's the question. 00:09:14.48\00:09:15.85 So they're looking through everyone, 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.32 but how are they going to find that? 00:09:17.35\00:09:18.69 Well, only if the people around that terrorist say 00:09:18.72\00:09:21.82 this guy's acting weird 00:09:21.86\00:09:23.19 and there's something bulging out of his pocket? 00:09:23.22\00:09:26.16 And he's, you know, that type of thing. 00:09:26.19\00:09:28.33 And then they've got walkie-talkies, 00:09:28.36\00:09:29.86 and they're like, "Yo, come over here 00:09:29.90\00:09:32.73 to this section of the concert face." 00:09:32.77\00:09:35.30 And so that's what they're doing. 00:09:35.34\00:09:36.94 So they're communicating and they're sending the signals 00:09:36.97\00:09:39.17 and then you know, the body can respond and fight. 00:09:39.21\00:09:43.14 The mucosal lining, though, does that, 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.31 is that an act of protection? 00:09:45.35\00:09:47.55 Does it act as protection, though? 00:09:47.58\00:09:48.92 Oh, absolutely. 00:09:48.95\00:09:50.29 And what helps produce that mucosal lining 00:09:50.32\00:09:52.09 is the bacteria themselves. 00:09:52.12\00:09:53.56 Okay. 00:09:53.59\00:09:54.92 Yeah, so that's kind of supposed to be like 00:09:54.96\00:09:56.29 a barrier of protection 00:09:56.32\00:09:57.69 that the bacteria produce 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.76 they, bacteria do so much for us. 00:09:59.79\00:10:02.36 So when they walkie-talkie, right? 00:10:02.40\00:10:04.90 That, hey, there's something going on. 00:10:04.93\00:10:07.27 Do you know they walkie-talkie to the control center, 00:10:07.30\00:10:09.80 the command center, 00:10:09.84\00:10:11.17 which is actually the gut microbiome. 00:10:11.21\00:10:14.48 So now in our gut, right? 00:10:14.51\00:10:15.98 We've got trillions of microbes there. 00:10:16.01\00:10:19.31 And these microbes here in my lungs, 00:10:19.35\00:10:22.25 they found communicate with the microbes in my gut. 00:10:22.28\00:10:24.65 Okay. 00:10:24.69\00:10:26.02 And it's the microbes in my gut 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.66 that in turn tell the immune system, 00:10:27.69\00:10:30.49 hey, we're, you know, 00:10:30.53\00:10:31.96 we're dispatching you to the lungs, 00:10:31.99\00:10:33.90 you need to go there right away. 00:10:33.93\00:10:35.70 There's an invader in this section, 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.70 take care of it, right? 00:10:37.73\00:10:39.50 And if that communication doesn't happen, 00:10:39.53\00:10:42.00 it's kind of fascinating. 00:10:42.04\00:10:43.37 They've done research where they found well, 00:10:43.41\00:10:44.97 if communication doesn't happen, 00:10:45.01\00:10:47.24 if you're, if the microbes in your lungs 00:10:47.28\00:10:49.78 don't communicate to the gut, right away, 00:10:49.81\00:10:52.78 then that virus is there. 00:10:52.81\00:10:54.78 And it's homekeeping, it's developing itself, 00:10:54.82\00:10:58.99 it's multiplying, it can really set up shop 00:10:59.02\00:11:01.82 so that by the time eventually the immune system is, 00:11:01.86\00:11:05.19 you know, alerted to what's going on. 00:11:05.23\00:11:07.96 They've got a stronghold, then it's really in there. 00:11:08.00\00:11:10.97 And the immune system has to really 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.30 put out the big guns, right? 00:11:13.34\00:11:14.94 Whereas if the microbiome 00:11:14.97\00:11:16.54 in my lungs is healthy 00:11:16.57\00:11:17.97 and doing what it's supposed to do, 00:11:18.01\00:11:19.87 communicates to the gut, 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.24 gut communicates to the immune system, 00:11:21.28\00:11:22.84 immune system takes it stuff there. 00:11:22.88\00:11:25.08 And meanwhile, this is so cool too. 00:11:25.11\00:11:27.52 Meanwhile, while all this is taking place 00:11:27.55\00:11:29.88 this communication, 00:11:29.92\00:11:31.25 the microbes in the gut are doing their part 00:11:31.29\00:11:33.69 to destroy this guy. 00:11:33.72\00:11:35.12 So these people who are around. Yeah. 00:11:35.16\00:11:37.09 You know, you've heard if a terrorist comes, 00:11:37.13\00:11:39.39 one of the best things to do 00:11:39.43\00:11:40.80 is some of these people who risk their own lives, 00:11:40.83\00:11:43.37 but they try to take him down 00:11:43.40\00:11:44.73 before he does a bunch of damage. 00:11:44.77\00:11:46.10 Yes. 00:11:46.13\00:11:47.47 And so that's what these microbes are doing. 00:11:47.50\00:11:48.84 Wow! They're trying. 00:11:48.87\00:11:50.21 Jump on. They do. 00:11:50.24\00:11:51.57 Yeah. 00:11:51.61\00:11:52.94 And they try to, they produce their own ammunition 00:11:52.97\00:11:56.51 against this invading virus 00:11:56.54\00:11:59.21 and they also compete for the property 00:11:59.25\00:12:02.28 and whatever nutrients that this guy's trying to... 00:12:02.32\00:12:04.92 To feed off. 00:12:04.95\00:12:06.29 Yes. To steal. 00:12:06.32\00:12:07.66 Yeah. Yes, yes. 00:12:07.69\00:12:09.02 So how do you enhance that level of communication? 00:12:09.06\00:12:13.40 Oh, that's such a good question. 00:12:13.43\00:12:16.67 I don't even know if I have like the answer. 00:12:16.70\00:12:19.07 I think it's so important for us just to be aware, 00:12:19.10\00:12:21.70 first of all, that when we have a healthy microbiome, 00:12:21.74\00:12:25.61 that is going to serve us and really stimulate 00:12:25.64\00:12:28.18 what's called a balanced immune response. 00:12:28.21\00:12:30.75 So we always think about having a strong, 00:12:30.78\00:12:33.28 I want a strong immune system, you know what I mean? 00:12:33.31\00:12:35.12 Yes. 00:12:35.15\00:12:36.48 But really, you know, when you feel miserable 00:12:36.52\00:12:38.25 when you're sick and you're like fever, 00:12:38.29\00:12:40.36 headache, coughing, you're in pain, 00:12:40.39\00:12:44.46 you're just miserable like, where's my immune system? 00:12:44.49\00:12:47.30 How come it's not fighting for me? 00:12:47.33\00:12:48.66 Yes. 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.03 Well, that is your immune system. 00:12:50.07\00:12:51.40 That is your immune system. 00:12:51.43\00:12:52.77 The virus could be doing its thing. 00:12:52.80\00:12:54.14 And you could be like, 00:12:54.17\00:12:55.50 you know, feeling like nothing's going on. 00:12:55.54\00:12:57.71 But it's your immune system that is launching the attack. 00:12:57.74\00:13:00.88 And that attack 00:13:00.91\00:13:02.24 is what's eliciting those symptoms. 00:13:02.28\00:13:03.61 Wow!
