cards for me kind of thing.

So I didn't grow up
with my biological family,

I grew up with a step family,

So I was adopted

It may sound really confusing,

but I just understand
that I didn't know my mom

I did not live with them
because my mother was addicted

to methamphetamine,

substance addiction problem.

weigh on you as we grow up,

Well, I guess you
could say I was the opposite.

I grew up in a
really good Christian home,

and had a good upbringing.

But the world had a very
strong pull on me pretty quick.

And so by the time I
was in my early teens,

I was like, completely
rebelling against God,

I didn't want
anything to do with God.

One reason,
because I just found myself

wanting to do my
own thing, you know?

And then, you
know, another reason too

is getting so caught up,

looking at all
the negative things

that can go on in Christianity.

I got so caught up on
seeing that everywhere around me

that I associated that with God.

And that's how I
started to see God. Yes.

And so I just wanted to go
as far away from Him as I could.

See, you just
brought out something

that's quite profound.

You know, a lot of
times people look at people

as opposed to the message.

So people get
caught up on the messenger,

as opposed to the
message, the gospel,

and they fall off of course.

So that's, yeah,
that's a profound point.

Ernie, I want to transition
back to you and talk about,

you know, how those
things impacted you,

the being adopted
within the family,

which it was a blessing

that you were still
within the family, for sure.

But what role did that
play in your development?

Yeah, the truth of
the matter is it just,

it really crushed me
because as an adopted child,

even though I had
every opportunity to excel,

to succeed, I was
taken out of a circumstance

that otherwise
would have been terrible.

But you don't
grasp concepts like that,

you don't grasp love
that way when you're little.

I mean, I was two
years old when I was adopted.

So by the time I
got into middle school,

into high school,
those kind of things,

I just felt like I
didn't belong anywhere.

And I think I mentioned
in my testimony the other day

that my skin color
was a little bit lighter

than my adopted family.

So I just felt like I didn't
belong even within the family,

just time and time
again, it was just like,

I am alone in the
world, I'm not worthy of love,

and there's
nothing I can do about it.

So I would take
it out on myself,

I developed like
self-destructive behaviors,

and one was self-mutilation.

And that's a clinical term
but I would lash out at myself

and I would cut myself
00:04:32.33\00:04:34.30
or hurt myself in
certain ways and whatnot.

All it was I
was in so much pain,

but had no way to
release it or to fill that void.

You know that
kind of thing. Yeah.

No healthy
outlet. No healthy outlet.

And, so you were in a
very dark place in your life.

What were some
of the other things

that you were into at that time?

Yeah. Oh, I just
embraced the world.

So I mean, I took on
the darkest types of things,

I would watch
terrible movies, horror movies,

I was really into that genre.

I got into the punk rock scene.

So very anti-establishment,
anti-everything,

anti the world, you know?

And I just thought
that that would empower me

in some way, shape or form.

And I thought it did,

but it really didn't
bring me any more sense

of fulfillment or purpose.

It just gave me an outlet for
all that aggression and anger.

And then from there,
there was no healing.

So it sounds like you
were searching for principles.

But you were searching for the
principles in the wrong areas.

gravitating towards the world.

What was your pull?
Was it music, then too?

become like famous singer

of maybe I
don't know what genre.

But did you want to

Yeah, that was the goal. Okay.

My plan actually,
as an early teen was

I wanted to run away from home,
00:06:04.09\00:06:06.16
I wanted to go to LA,

which is actually
where my parents left from

as soon as I was born,
because they didn't want me
00:06:09.86\00:06:11.57
to be raised in LA.

So I was going to go back there.

And I was so
determined that, you know,

I could join the music industry,

become a famous singer.

I wanted to be the
next Sarah Brightman.

Okay. That was my thing.

So yeah, that was my
goal pretty early on.

And so when did God
grab ahold of your life?

Well, what happened

is there was a time

when I actually
did know somebody

that was quite influential
in the music industry.

And I just remember
several times him sitting down

with me and basically saying,
00:06:50.17\00:06:52.94
"Is this what you want?

Do you want success?
00:06:54.34\00:06:55.68
Do you want fame?
00:06:55.71\00:06:57.28
Because, you
know, you can have it?"

And that's exactly
what I wanted, right?

But it was just like,
I could never say yes,

there's always this feeling
like, "No, this is not for you.

This is going to take
you down a really dark road."

So I never
would say yes to that.

And so right in
the middle of this,

I was sent to
Fountainview Academy.

So it sounds like there was
a great controversy going on.

There was a
battle, and praise God

that He
intervened on your behalf,

and you went to Fountainview.

Right. Yes, to shift that focus.

What about you, Ernie?

When did you grab
hold of the gospel?

That is, that's really a long
journey to tell you the truth.

After middle
school, high school,
00:07:43.22\00:07:44.56
after being institutionalized,
after therapy,
00:07:44.59\00:07:47.13
after all these things,
00:07:47.16\00:07:48.60
it wasn't until like my
tail end of high school,
00:07:48.63\00:07:51.47
when I got in
argument with my step family,
00:07:51.50\00:07:54.00
my family, you
know, kind of thing.
00:07:54.04\00:07:56.07
But Steve's, my
mom threw me out,
00:07:56.10\00:07:58.57
and I was homeless for
like two and a half years.
00:07:58.61\00:08:00.28
Wow.
00:08:00.31\00:08:01.64
And I just, again,

I took on more
self-destructing behaviors
00:08:03.04\00:08:04.88
and picked up
smoking, drinking, I went right
00:08:04.91\00:08:07.45
to substance abuse, just
like my biological mother.

And I said that in my testimony,
00:08:10.22\00:08:12.32
it pains me to say
that, but this is the truth,
00:08:12.35\00:08:14.19
I was given every
opportunity to succeed
00:08:14.22\00:08:16.32
and to live that
life, and that's exactly
00:08:16.36\00:08:18.49
where I went when I had freedom.
00:08:18.53\00:08:21.46
But God really intervened.

There's two stories within that,

but God really intervened.

The first time that I
can recollect very powerfully

when a certain individual
came into the gas station

where it worked.

And he asked to pray with me.

That was a
really simple request.

That's all he asked of me
and me not having a background,

religious things and growing
up in a respectable home,

I thought it'd be fine.

You know, there was
something about who he was,

he looked happy, he
looked, the good purpose,
00:08:43.55\00:08:45.55
all that kind of stuff.

So I let him pray for me.

He handed me a little
tiny, like, tiny Bible,
00:08:48.32\00:08:50.36
little pocket
edition, and then he just left

and I never saw him again.

But after that, I decided
there was something about him
00:08:54.40\00:08:58.53
and like, just his the
way he was living his life.

He was just happy.

So I thought maybe it's
his relationship with God.

So I think it's my
testimony again Yes.

But I took a
quarter out of the register,

and I go out and I say
heads is going to be yes

and tails is going to be no.

And I get really,
really firm with God.

I was like, if you're
really going to talk to me,

you're going to reveal to me now

because I don't
know what I'm doing,

I feel lost, I feel
hopeless, all these things,

and obviously, this man
just has all those things.

So you can give me

So I started out with all
those questions, are you real?

And I would flip that quarter,
and would land on heads,

you know, time and time again.
And I thought I'd be smart.

Like, I'd throw it
through the same question,

just a different way.

direct with me in those moments.

that God had a purpose for me

through at the moment.

But even then I wasn't ready,

stepped away from it.

So you transition,
you sat down with the guy,

you didn't want the
fame, he was asking you,

you couldn't decide
to go down that route,

you got sent to
Fountainview Academy,

now take us from there?

So at Fountainview,
you know, we had the choir,

the orchestra, the
touring all the time.

So this is where I
really was able to gain

a good foundation in
music, and what you know,
00:10:48.98\00:10:52.71
traveling and all
that would be like.

I didn't realize,

you know, what the
plan was for the future

that I would be doing
full time music ministry.

But I can look back
at that now I can see

that God was completely
preparing me for that.

Yes. And He taught
me so many things there.

But, after I graduated,

all those feelings
started to come back.

All that bitterness
that I'd held on to before

getting so caught up in all
the negatives, and just again,

not wanting anything
to do with Christianity.

And so I spiraled into
this extreme depression,

I became suicidal.

Just kind of like
Ernie not really feeling like

I knew where I was
going, or what my purpose was,

or anything like that.

But all the time, though,

you know, God was trying
to speak to me, to reach me.

I can look back at it
now and see it so clearly

how He was all the time,

you know, working to
bring me back to Him.

And I regret so much now

that it took me
so long to listen.

But my coming back to Him
wasn't in a single moment.

but you weren't right
with the Lord at that time,

It's interesting how that works.

It is. Our brains are so
funny sometimes as we are.

but what I can boil it down to

is that even though for
myself, I wanted my own way,

and I was, you know,
running away from God.

In my heart, I knew
it was what was right,

and I still wanted it for him.

But and then in the long
run, you saw his conversion...

And that led to
you being converted

How did you two meet?

Yeah, so ironically
it picks up right there.

So Jeremy, your half brother.

He gave his life to
God like a week before

and my best friend that I
lived with when I was homeless,

those two years everything
we went through thick and thin,

he got a job next
door at the smoke shop.

So I was an avid pot smoker

then because obviously
self-destructive behaviors,

but he ends up in a conversation

with Laura's brother in the back

while he's closing up shop.

And he talked for like
three and a half hours.

So I'm up in the front
and I decided to go over

to those front
lobby of the pizza place.

And me and Laura start
talking, and then Minda,

her brother's wife
comes out, we just sat there

going to college at the time,

and I needed a place to stay,

So it wasn't the pizza
that kept you in the pizzeria.
