becoming a Christian

was really interesting
because I came to listen

to Pastor John Carter's
preaching in 1992 in my city,

the city of Nizhny Novgorod.

And my reason was I
wanted to learn English.

I wanted, I was a
teacher of English already,

I wanted to improve my English.

And then I, you know,

my heart more and more.

it had tsarina,

and there was private ownership,

people possessed land,

and then the Communist
Revolution happened in 1917.

And then the communists
under the leadership of Lenin,

their motto was to deprive
people of what they owned.

So even in the country,
if a family owned one cow,

it was already considered
that they were capitalists

and everything
was taken from people,

their lands, their cattle,

no enterprise,
just nothing was owned.

And that was a lot
of blood, a lot of,

you know, just, you know,

the society was in
a terrible turmoil.

As far as religion
in the tsarist times,

in the monarchy times,

Russian Orthodox was
mingled with the state.

It was the state religion,

religions into the country

didn't proselytize.

And Seventh-day Adventism
came to Russia from Germany.

Well, before the
Communist Revolution,

and they stayed
inside their communities,

inside their congregations,
they couldn't preach to anyone.
00:05:10.51\00:05:15.11
Then with the
Communist time since 1917,
00:05:15.14\00:05:18.71
every religion was
persecuted in Russia,
00:05:18.75\00:05:21.28
every religion, including
Russian Orthodox Church.
00:05:21.32\00:05:25.35
They said that they
proclaimed, Lenin proclaimed,
00:05:25.39\00:05:28.82
the leader of the country,
00:05:28.86\00:05:30.19
that religion is
opium for people.
00:05:30.23\00:05:33.70
That it is a drug
that distracts people,
00:05:33.73\00:05:36.26
that leads them astray,
that changes their personality.
00:05:36.30\00:05:39.33
So religion was forbidden.
00:05:39.37\00:05:41.34
And so many people
suffered from that,
00:05:41.37\00:05:46.27
many people who were,
00:05:46.31\00:05:48.38
you know, who were in churches
00:05:48.41\00:05:50.21
and who stuck to their
beliefs, they were killed,
00:05:50.25\00:05:52.98
they were put to jail,
they were sent to Siberia,
00:05:53.01\00:05:55.52
their families were,
00:05:55.55\00:05:57.45
you know, just
ruined in many ways,
00:05:57.49\00:06:00.22
because they might even take
children away from families,
00:06:00.26\00:06:03.63
so this was what was happening
during Communism times,
00:06:03.66\00:06:08.16
during Lenin times.
00:06:08.20\00:06:09.63
Lenin died in 1924,
then Stalin came to power.
00:06:09.66\00:06:15.00
And Stalin left the atheistic
00:06:15.04\00:06:20.38
background of the country,
00:06:20.41\00:06:21.94
but he added
political persecution
00:06:21.98\00:06:24.51
because he was suspicious
00:06:24.55\00:06:26.41
that now if a
person didn't support
00:06:26.45\00:06:30.42
the political views
of his or of the party,
00:06:30.45\00:06:34.69
of the Communist
Party, then again,
00:06:34.72\00:06:36.93
millions of
people were executed,
00:06:36.96\00:06:39.73
and religion
was still forbidden.
00:06:39.76\00:06:43.53
But people kept
getting together underground.
00:06:43.57\00:06:47.04
They just kept
sticking to their faith.
00:06:47.07\00:06:49.44
And they even kept
talking to others about God,
00:06:49.47\00:06:53.94
but they, many of them
were punished severely for that.

So Stalin died in 1953.

Then Khrushchev
came, it was the 60s,
00:07:01.68\00:07:04.52
religion was still not
given its way in Russia,
00:07:04.55\00:07:08.72
then the 70s Brezhnev
and then the 80s, Gorbachev.

And this is when the
situation started warming up.

Gorbachev wanted
to open the country
00:07:16.50\00:07:18.13
to the Western influence.
00:07:18.17\00:07:21.30
And he did it in
the way he knew how,

and that was the time when,

you know, foreign
ministers were being allowed
00:07:29.28\00:07:33.08
to come into the country.

And it especially
flourished in further times

when the Soviet Union,

which we had since 1917,

then it split into
15 separate republics.

rather the 15 republics

of the former Soviet Union,
they became separate countries.

And this was when
Pastor John Carter,

I mean, their joint
efforts of evangelism with 3ABN,

and so is going on till
now, which I'm so thankful for.

people at the event?

When you went to
hear John Carter speak,

after all these
years of persecution,

people, and that was not enough.

There was more
than 12,000 people.

life after you got baptized?

very low self-esteem.

testimonies of simple people.

And we started receiving
