00:01:25.55\00:01:26.88 And what type of values 00:01:26.92\00:01:28.25 did your parents instill in you? 00:01:28.28\00:01:29.62 Oh, man, excellent. 00:01:29.65\00:01:31.29 Well, I was born in Newark, New Jersey. 00:01:31.32\00:01:33.56 My parents immigrated from Haiti. 00:01:33.59\00:01:36.79 And early on, you know, 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.16 they definitely gave us a lifestyle of discipline. 00:01:38.19\00:01:40.66 So I grew up playing, 00:01:40.70\00:01:42.03 you know, the violin, growing up in church. 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.00 And I'll be honest, you know, growing up, 00:01:44.03\00:01:46.74 trained as a classical violinist, 00:01:46.77\00:01:48.77 I mean, that definitely laid a foundation, 00:01:48.80\00:01:51.21 you know, practice was not an option, 00:01:51.24\00:01:53.24 you had to practice, you know, you had to practice. 00:01:53.27\00:01:55.78 Practice makes perfect. 00:01:55.81\00:01:57.61 And also very involved in church, 00:01:57.65\00:01:59.31 also I grew up going to church, 00:01:59.35\00:02:01.25 not just once a week, but many times during the week, 00:02:01.28\00:02:04.09 I was very, very involved. 00:02:04.12\00:02:05.45 And so my mother was involved as well. 00:02:05.49\00:02:07.12 And that was very, very foundational. 00:02:07.16\00:02:09.72 So when I got to the age, got to my teenage years, 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.26 when I thought I knew what was best, 00:02:12.29\00:02:14.16 you know, and my parents made sure that 00:02:14.20\00:02:15.76 I stayed in the church, and honestly, 00:02:15.80\00:02:18.13 there was an opportunity 00:02:18.17\00:02:19.87 for someone to step up to be a youth leader. 00:02:19.90\00:02:22.77 And I was 15 years old, 00:02:22.80\00:02:24.14 and the guy gave me the opportunity, 00:02:24.17\00:02:25.51 I raise my hand. 00:02:25.54\00:02:26.88 And I said, you know let me not complain about it. 00:02:26.91\00:02:28.74 But let me step up to the challenge 00:02:28.78\00:02:30.68 and help lead my youth group. 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.05 That's awesome. 00:02:32.08\00:02:33.42 So you saw the need, and you filled that void? 00:02:33.45\00:02:35.75 That is great. 00:02:35.78\00:02:37.65 And the fact that your parents kept you in church 00:02:37.69\00:02:39.75 and all of that stuff with that firm foundation. 00:02:39.79\00:02:42.06 So when would you say your leadership journey began? 00:02:42.09\00:02:45.73 Was that at 15 or when did that start? 00:02:45.76\00:02:48.56 Yeah, I would definitely say at 15, 00:02:48.60\00:02:50.30 because I literally did not see myself, 00:02:50.33\00:02:51.90 you know, I always attended church 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.67 to see what church could do for me, 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.90 and what youth activities 00:02:55.94\00:02:57.54 I'll be going for, and kind of to be entertained. 00:02:57.57\00:03:00.44 But at 15, you know, 00:03:00.48\00:03:01.81 definitely early on, my parents said, 00:03:01.84\00:03:03.31 don't be the problem, be part of it, 00:03:03.35\00:03:05.71 be a solution to it. 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.08 So I didn't know all the answers, 00:03:07.12\00:03:08.72 but I didn't know that, hey, you know, 00:03:08.75\00:03:10.12 with my, you know, team of support, 00:03:10.15\00:03:11.85 my other young people around me, 00:03:11.89\00:03:13.52 and some elders support, 00:03:13.56\00:03:14.89 that we can make a big difference 00:03:14.92\00:03:16.26 at that church there in West Palm Beach. 00:03:16.29\00:03:17.99 And things just took off from there. 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.79 We had an amazing, you know, three years. 00:03:19.83\00:03:21.36 And that really laid the foundation 00:03:21.40\00:03:22.90 for even more leadership opportunities for me. 00:03:22.93\00:03:25.03 That's right. 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.40 You know one of the things that 00:03:26.43\00:03:27.77 I've noticed about you and that I admire is that 00:03:27.80\00:03:30.47 you asked the right questions. 00:03:30.51\00:03:32.24 So I noticed throughout some of our conversations 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.71 and stuff like that, 00:03:35.74\00:03:37.08 you'll ask questions, and you'll know exactly 00:03:37.11\00:03:39.58 what questions to ask to find out 00:03:39.61\00:03:42.22 what you need to know to further the cause. 00:03:42.25\00:03:46.29 I'm glad you think that's good. 00:03:46.32\00:03:47.66 Sometimes people, they get annoyed by me 00:03:47.69\00:03:49.02 asking questions. 00:03:49.06\00:03:50.39 But yeah, I like to further, you know, to understand, 00:03:50.43\00:03:52.53 better to understand the situation, 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.23 so that I could, you know, contribute in a valuable way. 00:03:54.26\00:03:56.10 Yes. 00:03:56.13\00:03:57.47 And what do you enjoy about leadership? 00:03:57.50\00:04:00.07 Honestly, you know, I love people. 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.94 I love working with people, you know, 00:04:01.97\00:04:03.51 I don't have all the answers. 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.01 And that's one thing in leadership 00:04:05.04\00:04:06.37 we need to understand that 00:04:06.41\00:04:07.74 leaders don't have all the answers. 00:04:07.78\00:04:09.11 That's right. 00:04:09.14\00:04:10.48 And, but to get the answers, 00:04:10.51\00:04:11.85 you got to spend time with people. 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.21 And the more you do, 00:04:13.25\00:04:14.58 the better, you get to know them, 00:04:14.62\00:04:15.95 you build relationships, and when things, you know, 00:04:15.98\00:04:17.72 get, you know, aren't as perfect 00:04:17.75\00:04:19.55 as they should be because there will be trials 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.79 and situations you get to go through them together. 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.53 Yes, and you ask questions? 00:04:24.56\00:04:26.13 Yes, for sure. 00:04:26.16\00:04:28.50 So what would you say your leadership style is? 00:04:28.53\00:04:31.53 Oh, man, really, you know, I tried to listen first. 00:04:31.57\00:04:35.27 You know, I tried to listen more than I could talk. 00:04:35.30\00:04:38.47 You know, spending time on the front lines, 00:04:38.51\00:04:40.68 depending on my leadership situation of being 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.58 as close to the customer 00:04:43.61\00:04:45.35 and to the front line employee as much as possible. 00:04:45.38\00:04:48.68 I could stay in my office, 00:04:48.72\00:04:50.05 I could be comfortable at my desk. 00:04:50.09\00:04:51.45 But the more that I'm out and about 00:04:51.49\00:04:53.56 and that was the example of Jesus, you know, 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.42 and I think that definitely, 00:04:55.46\00:04:57.03 I think, I know that needs to be 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.89 the foundation of all leadership 00:04:58.93\00:05:00.43 because He was the world's greatest leader. 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.06 Amen. Amen. 00:05:02.10\00:05:03.63 So you listen and see that is the key thing. 00:05:03.67\00:05:07.50 It's interesting because God blessed us 00:05:07.54\00:05:09.24 with two ears and one mouth. 00:05:09.27\00:05:10.61 That's good. 00:05:10.64\00:05:11.97 A lot of people just, that mouth is just going. 00:05:12.01\00:05:14.74 Sure. And these are closed off. 00:05:14.78\00:05:17.45 So that's great that you're listening 00:05:17.48\00:05:19.25 and finding those things out. 00:05:19.28\00:05:21.65 Now, sometimes there are challenges 00:05:21.68\00:05:24.12 that we face as leaders and all of that stuff. 00:05:24.15\00:05:26.72 How do you stay motivated 00:05:26.76\00:05:29.59 throughout the leadership process? 00:05:29.62\00:05:31.46 Oh, man, Jason, it's a daily thing, motivation. 00:05:31.49\00:05:36.26 I think it starts with your sense of purpose. 00:05:36.30\00:05:37.93 You know, why do you do what you do? 00:05:37.97\00:05:40.14 Your purpose has to be bigger than your paycheck. 00:05:40.17\00:05:43.57 Say that again. 00:05:43.61\00:05:44.94 Yeah, your purpose must be bigger than your paycheck. 00:05:44.97\00:05:47.54 And once you know, your purpose doesn't mean 00:05:47.58\00:05:49.14 everything's gonna be perfect. 00:05:49.18\00:05:50.71 It just means that when things don't go well, 00:05:50.75\00:05:53.58 you know why you're doing what you're doing, 00:05:53.62\00:05:55.45 you know, there'll be good day, there'll be bad day. 00:05:55.48\00:05:57.52 But if you're working on your purpose, 00:05:57.55\00:05:58.89 you'll have more good days than bad days. 00:05:58.92\00:06:01.32 But for me staying motivated to the ground me 00:06:01.36\00:06:03.49 spending my daily time, 00:06:03.53\00:06:05.29 kind of reflecting, you know, devotional time with God, 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.40 surrounding myself with positive influences, 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.83 not just at work, but in my personal life, 00:06:10.87\00:06:13.07 and staying rooted in a Bible-based church. 00:06:13.10\00:06:15.30 I mean, that makes a huge, 00:06:15.34\00:06:16.71 huge difference, I'll be honest. 00:06:16.74\00:06:18.11 Yeah, absolutely. 00:06:18.14\00:06:19.54 So tell us more about your leadership journey? 00:06:19.57\00:06:21.68 Yeah. 00:06:21.71\00:06:23.04 So, you know, really starting there at 15 as, 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.55 you know, my youth group leader, 00:06:25.58\00:06:26.92 you know, put in that position. 00:06:26.95\00:06:28.78 You know, I know I didn't have all the answers 00:06:28.82\00:06:30.29 but had a great group around me, 00:06:30.32\00:06:32.05 and I really felt, you know, God's call in ministry. 00:06:32.09\00:06:34.82 For the longest many people thought, 00:06:34.86\00:06:36.96 hey, you should be an attorney, a lawyer, you love to speak. 00:06:36.99\00:06:40.16 But I felt a different calling on my life. 00:06:40.20\00:06:42.23 So I decided to attend Southern Adventist University 00:06:42.26\00:06:45.33 and had an amazing time there. 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.70 And at the end, you know, the goal is to, you know, 00:06:47.74\00:06:51.51 attain a job with a conference in church, 00:06:51.54\00:06:54.21 and believe it or not, 00:06:54.24\00:06:55.58 you know, I had eight different interviews. 00:06:55.61\00:06:57.21 When you went to Southern, what did you take? 00:06:57.25\00:06:59.45 At Southern, I was a theology major, 00:06:59.48\00:07:03.02 I took some business classes and my parents always say, 00:07:03.05\00:07:05.62 you can't go wrong with some business. 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.22 So, you know, amazing time there studying, 00:07:07.26\00:07:09.42 getting to know the Word, 00:07:09.46\00:07:10.79 get some business courses 00:07:10.83\00:07:12.19 for personal finance, accounting. 00:07:12.23\00:07:13.96 And, you know, I was interviewing with conferences, 00:07:14.00\00:07:16.77 and I wasn't getting any job offers. 00:07:16.80\00:07:19.27 So that definitely wasn't the point of college. 00:07:19.30\00:07:22.37 And it wasn't until literally my last week of college 00:07:22.40\00:07:24.81 where I was like, what am I going to do? 00:07:24.84\00:07:26.91 You know, I received a call to Tulsa, Oklahoma, 00:07:26.94\00:07:31.98 and I thought it was just going to be 00:07:32.01\00:07:33.85 for a youth pastor situation, and you know, 00:07:33.88\00:07:36.58 and there I was being asked to be the senior pastor. 00:07:36.62\00:07:40.09 Whoa, wait a minute, so you were, 00:07:40.12\00:07:42.96 you went from getting no job offers at that point, 00:07:42.99\00:07:45.66 you know, with the conference and stuff, 00:07:45.69\00:07:47.40 to getting a job offer to be the senior pastor. 00:07:47.43\00:07:51.07 Now, how old were you at this point? 00:07:51.10\00:07:52.90 At that point I was only 21 years old. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.84 You were a 21-year-old senior pastor? 00:07:54.87\00:07:58.07 What kind of challenges did you face in that role 00:07:58.11\00:08:01.04 because going into a church as a 21-year-old pastor, 00:08:01.08\00:08:04.71 and having some older members and stuff? 00:08:04.75\00:08:06.88 How did they feel about, 00:08:06.92\00:08:08.52 you know, coming to you for advice 00:08:08.55\00:08:10.22 and leadership expertise? 00:08:10.25\00:08:12.99 Well, man, that's a loaded one. 00:08:13.02\00:08:16.99 Well, I'll start with me how I felt, 00:08:17.03\00:08:18.89 you know, definitely felt impossible syndrome. 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.76 You know, I felt, what do I know about 00:08:20.80\00:08:23.00 being a pastor at 21 years old, 00:08:23.03\00:08:24.87 you know, but really, you know, 00:08:24.90\00:08:26.77 God used that opportunity to really humble me 00:08:26.80\00:08:29.90 and I really had depended on Him, 00:08:29.94\00:08:31.51 you know, really had to get very serious 00:08:31.54\00:08:34.11 about my prayer life. 00:08:34.14\00:08:35.48 You know, it wasn't just about what I knew, 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.11 but how can I motivate the team around me, 00:08:37.15\00:08:38.95 and that's where the listening came 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.52 even more apparent in terms of 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.85 what it takes to be a good leader, 00:08:42.88\00:08:44.22 you have to listen. 00:08:44.25\00:08:45.59 I didn't know that community, the people did. 00:08:45.62\00:08:47.79 And there were some great people, 00:08:47.82\00:08:49.16 you know, they just needed a leader 00:08:49.19\00:08:50.53 to get behind them and to push forward. 00:08:50.56\00:08:52.56 And for two and a half years, we did some amazing things. 00:08:52.59\00:08:55.20 And I'm sure there are some things 00:08:55.23\00:08:56.56 that you know, I did because of my youth 00:08:56.60\00:08:58.03 because of inexperience. 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.70 But God's mercy is great. 00:08:59.73\00:09:01.54 And so we are the members and we were able to do 00:09:01.57\00:09:04.17 so much together in two and a half years there. 00:09:04.21\00:09:07.61 So then from there, you know, 00:09:07.64\00:09:08.98 I found myself going to, coming back to Florida. 00:09:09.01\00:09:11.98 You know, had a family situation, 00:09:12.01\00:09:13.72 my father wasn't feeling well, had kidney failure. 00:09:13.75\00:09:17.09 He's doing much better today. Praise God. 00:09:17.12\00:09:19.12 And I was teaching at the Academy there, 00:09:19.15\00:09:21.42 Forest Lake Academy. 00:09:21.46\00:09:22.79 I met you there too. 00:09:22.82\00:09:24.56 Yes, we crossed paths. 00:09:24.59\00:09:25.93 I didn't know that then. Yeah. 00:09:25.96\00:09:27.30 We crossed paths there. 00:09:27.33\00:09:28.66 Yeah. Yeah. 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.03 And it was just crazy how God works 00:09:30.07\00:09:31.70 and had the opportunity to do a leadership 00:09:31.73\00:09:34.70 development residency leadership 00:09:34.74\00:09:36.57 development program, 00:09:36.60\00:09:37.94 where I got to learn about health care, administration, 00:09:37.97\00:09:40.11 health care leadership, more learning, more listening. 00:09:40.14\00:09:44.41 And I spent 10 and a half years with the health care system 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.08 there in Orlando, 00:09:47.12\00:09:48.45 just learning, growing you know, 00:09:48.48\00:09:49.98 making mistakes, learning from my mistakes. 00:09:50.02\00:09:52.75 And God was just able to teach me so much there. 00:09:52.79\00:09:56.22 And then I had the opportunity to leave Orlando 00:09:56.26\00:10:00.66 and to continue growing my leadership 00:10:00.70\00:10:03.16 where I was working in human resources, 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.57 the head of, you know, four different regions, 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.64 four states and 13 hospitals 00:10:08.67\00:10:10.37 leading human resource strategy and implementation. 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.88 So, and that was in the crux of the pandemic. 00:10:13.91\00:10:17.45 So, talk about change, 00:10:17.48\00:10:19.61 you know, new city, new job, new team, 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.08 but God is always faithful. 00:10:22.12\00:10:24.05 So relying on Him, really got me through 00:10:24.09\00:10:26.59 and worked with an amazing team 00:10:26.62\00:10:30.06 and looking forward to my, you know, 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.99 continue working and now as a hospital president 00:10:32.03\00:10:35.03 in the Chicago land area Hospital president, 00:10:35.06\00:10:38.10 how old are you right now if you don't mind me asking? 00:10:38.13\00:10:41.27 I don't mind at all, 35. 00:10:41.30\00:10:44.07 Wow, 35 and the hospital president. 00:10:44.11\00:10:46.64 What have you noticed throughout your journey 00:10:46.68\00:10:50.08 because you've been 00:10:50.11\00:10:51.45 in a lot of different industries? 00:10:51.48\00:10:53.01 What are some skills that 00:10:53.05\00:10:54.48 you've taken from each position 00:10:54.52\00:10:58.39 that you currently use today? 00:10:58.42\00:11:00.39 Yeah, well, I mentioned listening before, 00:11:00.42\00:11:02.59 but you know, honestly, 00:11:02.62\00:11:03.96 it starts from within, you know, 00:11:03.99\00:11:05.36 understanding your purpose, 00:11:05.39\00:11:06.80 understanding your why, you know, 00:11:06.83\00:11:08.56 and it's important to know that leaders 00:11:08.60\00:11:10.87 will not have all the answers, 00:11:10.90\00:11:12.63 you know, just because you have the leadership position, 00:11:12.67\00:11:14.47 the title, you will not have it all figured out. 00:11:14.50\00:11:16.14 Yes. 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.51 So the more you come to grasp with that on a regular basis, 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.54 you listen to people, you spend time with people, 00:11:20.58\00:11:24.18 they'll tell you, you know, 00:11:24.21\00:11:25.55 getting close to customers, 00:11:25.58\00:11:26.92 you're getting close to your team. 00:11:26.95\00:11:28.28 And it's amazing, you know, I remember times 00:11:28.32\00:11:29.88 when during my different transitions, 00:11:29.92\00:11:32.59 I always came with a plan, this is what I'm going to do. 00:11:32.62\00:11:35.89 And to be honest, only flat to fail. 00:11:35.92\00:11:38.99 I realized it's not about Pierre's plan, you know, 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.46 it's about, you know, 00:11:41.50\00:11:42.83 the plan that is needed for that community. 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.43 Yes. 00:11:44.47\00:11:45.80 And that's the plan of Jesus, 00:11:45.83\00:11:47.24 you know, you see, all throughout Jesus' ministry, 00:11:47.27\00:11:49.94 He spent time with people, you know? 00:11:49.97\00:11:52.64 And then the next takeaway is, 00:11:52.67\00:11:54.44 no matter what position you're in, 00:11:54.48\00:11:56.38 be a problem solver, you know, don't be, you know, 00:11:56.41\00:11:59.65 the problem announcer, be the problem solver. 00:11:59.68\00:12:02.78 And what did Jesus do? 00:12:02.82\00:12:04.15 Everywhere He went, He solved problems. 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.45 You know, He not only looked for problems, 00:12:06.49\00:12:08.66 but people then brought problems to Him. 00:12:08.69\00:12:11.79 So that's an example I share with my leadership team, 00:12:11.83\00:12:14.06 with other leaders, aspiring leaders, 00:12:14.10\00:12:16.20 you know, don't be a problem announcer, 00:12:16.23\00:12:18.00 be a problem solver. 00:12:18.03\00:12:19.83 And through those problems, 00:12:19.87\00:12:21.20 you won't have it all figured out 00:12:21.24\00:12:22.90 but you'll learn about yourself, 00:12:22.94\00:12:24.67 you learn about your team. 00:12:24.71\00:12:26.07 And then the last thing is, 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.18 you know, focus on the strengths 00:12:28.21\00:12:30.68 of the team around you, just not focus on 00:12:30.71\00:12:32.78 what you can't do, focus on what you can do. 00:12:32.81\00:12:36.42 And it just makes life 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.65 so much easier when we focus on 00:12:38.69\00:12:40.49 what you can do, and honestly, 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.42 everyone becomes happier 00:12:42.46\00:12:43.86 as a result of that kind of leadership. 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.73 Absolutely. 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.83 How do you go about motivating your team? 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.87 Yeah, well, motivating a team? 00:12:50.90\00:12:52.23 Yeah, again, starts with myself, 00:12:52.27\00:12:53.64 you know, I've got to stay motivated. 00:12:53.67\00:12:55.00 I got to know my why. 00:12:55.04\00:12:56.37 I had to know why I do what I do. 00:12:56.40\00:12:58.64 And I tell my team, you need to know 00:12:58.67\00:13:00.04 the purpose of why you are here. 00:13:00.08\00:13:01.54 Your purpose must be bigger than your paycheck 00:13:01.58\00:13:03.68 and if it's not, you may not be 00:13:03.71\00:13:05.61 doing the right job or the right thing. 00:13:05.65\00:13:07.68 You know, so with my team, 00:13:07.72\00:13:09.05 I tried to ensure that they're in their sweet spot. 00:13:09.08\00:13:11.39 They're working on things they enjoy doing. 00:13:11.42\00:13:14.39 But they're also uplifting each other. 00:13:14.42\00:13:17.63 One thing that's taken for granted, 00:13:17.66\00:13:19.56 is recognizing people and giving them appreciation. 00:13:19.59\00:13:22.53 You know, it sounds simple. 00:13:22.56\00:13:24.03 Sometimes it sounds clich, 00:13:24.07\00:13:25.73 but you know, for someone hearing, 00:13:25.77\00:13:27.30 hey, you're doing a great job, 00:13:27.34\00:13:28.67 you're doing a good job goes a long way. 00:13:28.70\00:13:30.71 That's that positive feedback. 00:13:30.74\00:13:32.07 Again, we see that 00:13:32.11\00:13:33.44 all throughout the life and ministry of Jesus. 00:13:33.48\00:13:36.68 And if a team is not motivated, 00:13:36.71\00:13:38.21 I truly believe they can't do great work. 00:13:38.25\00:13:41.22 So leader's job, I mean, you're not just a cheerleader, 00:13:41.25\00:13:43.25 but you're motivating them, spending time with them, 00:13:43.28\00:13:45.42 and putting them 00:13:45.45\00:13:46.79 in the best situation to be successful. 00:13:46.82\00:13:49.69 Now, that's on the very positive side, too, 00:13:49.72\00:13:53.73 but now let's shift into accountability. 00:13:53.76\00:13:57.50 How do you hold people accountable, 00:13:57.53\00:13:59.27 and how important is it to have that 00:13:59.30\00:14:02.14 accountability in business? 00:14:02.17\00:14:03.61 Yeah, in business and in life, accountability is important. 00:14:03.64\00:14:07.44 You know, without accountability, 00:14:07.48\00:14:08.81 there's chaos. 00:14:08.84\00:14:10.18 I truly believe that. 00:14:10.21\00:14:11.55 And I truly believe the only way 00:14:11.58\00:14:12.91 to get accountability is to be honest, 00:14:12.95\00:14:14.95 you know, every step of the way. 00:14:14.98\00:14:17.22 You know, sometimes 00:14:17.25\00:14:18.59 we don't want to hurt people's feelings. 00:14:18.62\00:14:19.95 Sometimes we don't want people to be upset at us, 00:14:19.99\00:14:21.36 but it's just a way in which you do it, you know? 00:14:21.39\00:14:23.46 I could hold you accountable and still love you. 00:14:23.49\00:14:25.76 I can hold you accountable and still be kind, you know, 00:14:25.79\00:14:28.26 I could separate 00:14:28.30\00:14:29.63 some of the actions from the person. 00:14:29.66\00:14:31.30 You know, I've been in situations 00:14:31.33\00:14:32.67 where, you know, I've had to give 00:14:32.70\00:14:34.04 some pretty tough feedback, you know, 00:14:34.07\00:14:36.27 ended up with a hug at the end of the conversation. 00:14:36.30\00:14:39.21 And that came from years of experience. 00:14:39.24\00:14:40.94 I didn't have it all figured out. 00:14:40.98\00:14:42.31 So I'm no expert there. 00:14:42.34\00:14:43.68 But no, I really know that 00:14:43.71\00:14:45.38 you know, people overlook 00:14:45.41\00:14:46.78 some simple attributes like kindness, you know, 00:14:46.82\00:14:49.45 looking at the person, 00:14:49.48\00:14:50.82 treat them with dignity and respect. 00:14:50.85\00:14:52.79 And you can still hold them accountable. 00:14:52.82\00:14:54.66 And without that accountability Mstructure, man, 00:14:54.69\00:14:57.99 I mean, you're hurting your business. 00:14:58.03\00:14:59.36 And also, as a Christian, you're hurting your witness 00:14:59.39\00:15:02.76 because Jesus expects excellence. 00:15:02.80\00:15:05.13 Yes. 00:15:05.17\00:15:07.10 So you said with the kindness and stuff, 00:15:07.14\00:15:09.80 you can still let people know you hold them accountable. 00:15:09.84\00:15:12.57 You know, I think that 00:15:12.61\00:15:13.94 we've kind of shifted as a society 00:15:13.98\00:15:16.41 into a place of being enablers, 00:15:16.44\00:15:18.91 you know, because people are so worried, 00:15:18.95\00:15:20.88 well, I don't want to offend this person, 00:15:20.92\00:15:22.35 or I don't want to say the wrong thing. 00:15:22.38\00:15:24.42 But it's that accountability is out of that love that 00:15:24.45\00:15:27.72 you want to share, you know, whatever it may be, 00:15:27.76\00:15:30.69 you know, with that individual. 00:15:30.73\00:15:32.29 Oh, totally agree. 00:15:32.33\00:15:33.66 And I think that's an important role 00:15:33.70\00:15:35.03 that mentors play in our lives. 00:15:35.06\00:15:36.97 Because as leaders, you know, 00:15:37.00\00:15:38.37 regardless of where you find yourself, 00:15:38.40\00:15:39.73 you're always learning. 00:15:39.77\00:15:41.10 Sometimes you gonna need a mentor, 00:15:41.14\00:15:43.41 who doesn't work maybe in your organization, 00:15:43.44\00:15:45.51 or who doesn't like report to you, 00:15:45.54\00:15:46.91 report to them. 00:15:46.94\00:15:48.28 And they can give you real feedback, say, 00:15:48.31\00:15:49.64 hey, I was in this meeting, you know, this is how it went, 00:15:49.68\00:15:52.71 you know, what are your thoughts 00:15:52.75\00:15:54.08 or to bounce ideas off of, and someone that 00:15:54.12\00:15:56.05 can be really honest with you. 00:15:56.08\00:15:57.92 And as I climbed in my leadership experience, 00:15:57.95\00:15:59.75 I realized, there are very few people 00:15:59.79\00:16:01.52 around me at work that will be totally honest with me. 00:16:01.56\00:16:04.26 So the role of mentor is to keep me accountable, 00:16:04.29\00:16:06.80 to keep me, you know, 00:16:06.83\00:16:08.36 in line and in check is very important. 00:16:08.40\00:16:11.33 Why do you think that is? 00:16:11.37\00:16:12.70 Why do you think that, 00:16:12.73\00:16:14.24 you know, as you climb, 00:16:14.27\00:16:15.60 people don't want to be as honest, 00:16:15.64\00:16:18.47 do you think it's a fear factor? 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.21 Like what do you think is the reason for that? 00:16:21.24\00:16:23.61 I think, it's a societal fear factor, right? 00:16:23.65\00:16:26.25 Because the greater someone's position, 00:16:26.28\00:16:29.02 society tells you, 00:16:29.05\00:16:30.39 they're unreachable, they're untouchable. 00:16:30.42\00:16:32.15 You know, that's what I've tried to model my leadership, 00:16:32.19\00:16:34.39 and it's a work in progress, trying to be approachable, 00:16:34.42\00:16:37.56 spending time 00:16:37.59\00:16:38.93 out of my office connecting with people. 00:16:38.96\00:16:40.80 You know, one thing I enjoy doing, 00:16:40.83\00:16:42.26 you know, I've been doing it for a few years is, 00:16:42.30\00:16:44.07 you know, anytime 00:16:44.10\00:16:45.43 there are birthdays being celebrated, 00:16:45.47\00:16:47.10 and I like to bring all colleagues together, 00:16:47.14\00:16:48.90 all team members, regardless of what level 00:16:48.94\00:16:50.87 they are in organization, 00:16:50.91\00:16:52.24 let's just connect together, you know, for your birthday. 00:16:52.27\00:16:55.11 And, you know, I believe that 00:16:55.14\00:16:56.48 there are two important days in someone's life, 00:16:56.51\00:16:58.51 the day they're born, and the day 00:16:58.55\00:16:59.95 they figured out why they were born, you know, 00:16:59.98\00:17:01.95 so why not celebrate a birthday 00:17:01.98\00:17:03.52 and then we could talk about purpose at the same time. 00:17:03.55\00:17:05.32 That's right. Yeah. 00:17:05.35\00:17:06.69 And, you know, we've talked about the why, 00:17:06.72\00:17:08.06 we've talked about purpose. 00:17:08.09\00:17:09.92 How would you say that one 00:17:09.96\00:17:11.39 goes about discovering their purpose? 00:17:11.43\00:17:13.60 Oh, man, man, 00:17:13.63\00:17:14.96 that's the million-dollar question right there. 00:17:15.00\00:17:16.90 Finding purpose, man, 00:17:16.93\00:17:18.37 you know, honestly, you know, 00:17:18.40\00:17:20.40 the tactical ways, you know, there's different, you know, 00:17:20.44\00:17:23.44 personality tests and different, 00:17:23.47\00:17:25.37 you know skill discoveries online, 00:17:25.41\00:17:27.08 that people could go about. 00:17:27.11\00:17:28.54 But honestly, you know, as a Christian, 00:17:28.58\00:17:30.35 really through prayer, 00:17:30.38\00:17:31.71 you know, look at where your gifts are, 00:17:31.75\00:17:33.75 and how you can serve, and how you can be 00:17:33.78\00:17:35.52 a representative for the kingdom. 00:17:35.55\00:17:37.22 You know, so I do believe that 00:17:37.25\00:17:39.45 there's one piece of knowing your skill sets, 00:17:39.49\00:17:41.52 but also knowing that purpose 00:17:41.56\00:17:42.92 and what God has placed you on this earth to do. 00:17:42.96\00:17:45.23 And ultimately, we're all called to be a witness. 00:17:45.26\00:17:46.86 Right? 00:17:46.90\00:17:48.23 So how do we use those skills to bring glory to God 00:17:48.26\00:17:50.77 and bring people into the kingdom? 00:17:50.80\00:17:53.20 Excellent answer. 00:17:53.23\00:17:55.14 How important would you say 00:17:55.17\00:17:56.50 integrity is in business, and in life period? 00:17:56.54\00:18:00.71 I think it's very important. 00:18:00.74\00:18:02.74 Unfortunately, there are lots of examples 00:18:02.78\00:18:04.11 of integrity not being shown. 00:18:04.15\00:18:06.38 And I do believe that, you know, as Christian leaders, 00:18:06.41\00:18:09.98 I mean, the spotlight's on us. 00:18:10.02\00:18:11.92 You know, they may act as if integrity is not a big deal 00:18:11.95\00:18:15.36 but the moment we were out of line, 00:18:15.39\00:18:17.23 you know, that's not it's a reflection of ourselves, 00:18:17.26\00:18:19.23 but also of Jesus in our church. 00:18:19.26\00:18:23.53 So integrity has to be there. 00:18:23.57\00:18:25.43 But it has to come from daily supplication daily. 00:18:25.47\00:18:28.77 All right, I got to reposition myself 00:18:28.80\00:18:30.37 and make sure I'm an ambassador 00:18:30.41\00:18:32.17 for Jesus every step of the way. 00:18:32.21\00:18:34.28 And honestly, if we falter 00:18:34.31\00:18:37.21 and juggle with integrity, I mean, we're putting ourselves 00:18:37.25\00:18:39.98 in a horrible situation, 00:18:40.02\00:18:41.85 from a business standpoint, and from a life standpoint. 00:18:41.88\00:18:43.85 Absolutely. 00:18:43.89\00:18:45.39 What type of challenges have you faced as a leader? 00:18:45.42\00:18:49.69 Oh, man, where do I begin? 00:18:49.72\00:18:51.39 I'll say one thing, you know 00:18:51.43\00:18:52.79 because I still have a lot to learn. 00:18:52.83\00:18:54.76 You know, I think one of the main challenges is, 00:18:54.80\00:18:56.60 you know, I don't know what I don't know. 00:18:56.63\00:18:57.97 Right? 00:18:58.00\00:18:59.33 So there are situations where I come and like, 00:18:59.37\00:19:00.70 I don't have the answer. 00:19:00.74\00:19:02.07 There are situations I come across 00:19:02.10\00:19:03.44 when people expect me like, 00:19:03.47\00:19:04.81 hey, we need a decision on this. 00:19:04.84\00:19:06.47 And I have to take a step back and say, 00:19:06.51\00:19:07.94 well, we need to take some time to figure that out. 00:19:07.98\00:19:11.41 And people aren't always patient. 00:19:11.45\00:19:12.91 Right? 00:19:12.95\00:19:14.28 So being able to be comfortable with the uncomfortable, 00:19:14.32\00:19:17.55 know when to be patient when to say, you know what? 00:19:17.59\00:19:19.89 Maybe no decision is the best decision right now. 00:19:19.92\00:19:22.79 We live in a very fast-paced culture. 00:19:22.82\00:19:25.16 We need everything now. 00:19:25.19\00:19:26.53 Instant gratification, 00:19:26.56\00:19:28.00 but the leader needs to be, you know, 00:19:28.03\00:19:30.57 aware enough to know, okay, 00:19:30.60\00:19:32.43 sometimes it's not about going faster, 00:19:32.47\00:19:35.04 but it's about going the right way. 00:19:35.07\00:19:37.04 So most of my challenges have come from, 00:19:37.07\00:19:39.21 you know, gauging people's expectations, 00:19:39.24\00:19:41.84 taking time to slow down, 00:19:41.88\00:19:43.85 taking time to evaluate things, 00:19:43.88\00:19:46.11 and not making decisions off of impulse 00:19:46.15\00:19:48.22 and off of feelings. 00:19:48.25\00:19:49.78 One of the things I really like 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.55 about that is it shows a level of humility, 00:19:51.59\00:19:54.29 because some people will just like, 00:19:54.32\00:19:56.56 they'll give you an answer. 00:19:56.59\00:19:57.93 It's like you stop somebody you're driving down the street 00:19:57.96\00:20:00.56 and you stop somebody and you say, 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.10 well, hey, how do I get to such and such or whatever? 00:20:02.13\00:20:05.70 He doesn't know how to get there? 00:20:05.73\00:20:07.27 Oh, yeah, you want to go two blocks down, 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.47 make a left, then go right 00:20:09.50\00:20:11.31 when you see whatever, restaurant or store, 00:20:11.34\00:20:15.21 whatever, and then go left. 00:20:15.24\00:20:16.85 He's giving you the wrong direction. 00:20:16.88\00:20:18.35 He doesn't even know where he's telling you to go, 00:20:18.38\00:20:20.12 but he just wants to give that answer. 00:20:20.15\00:20:21.95 And so the fact that you take that step back 00:20:21.98\00:20:24.12 and everything that speaks to humility as well. 00:20:24.15\00:20:25.95 So that's awesome. 00:20:25.99\00:20:27.66 We've talked about some of the challenges. 00:20:27.69\00:20:29.26 Now, what do you do to overcome 00:20:29.29\00:20:31.23 some of the challenges as a leader? 00:20:31.26\00:20:33.13 Yeah, I truly believe that feedback is a gift. 00:20:33.16\00:20:35.40 Yes. 00:20:35.43\00:20:36.77 You know, sometimes, you know, 00:20:36.80\00:20:38.13 we need to be self-aware to ask for feedback. 00:20:38.17\00:20:39.73 Right? 00:20:39.77\00:20:41.10 Now, we could get it from a mentor, 00:20:41.14\00:20:42.47 you know, we could get it from our family. 00:20:42.50\00:20:43.84 But sometimes we need to have 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.21 one on one conversation with our teams, 00:20:45.24\00:20:46.84 with our customers, and say, 00:20:46.88\00:20:48.21 hey, how am I doing as a leader 00:20:48.24\00:20:50.25 or how did I handle that meeting? 00:20:50.28\00:20:51.88 You know, how do we do on this project? 00:20:51.91\00:20:53.95 And sometimes we don't ask that question 00:20:53.98\00:20:56.18 because we don't want to hear the answer. 00:20:56.22\00:20:58.29 But I truly believe feedback is a gift. 00:20:58.32\00:21:00.16 Yeah, even if it's hard feedback, 00:21:00.19\00:21:02.42 even if it's not something we want to hear. 00:21:02.46\00:21:04.19 That's how we get better. 00:21:04.23\00:21:05.56 You know, even in the biggest room, 00:21:05.59\00:21:07.50 there's always room for improvement, I tell people. 00:21:07.53\00:21:09.86 So, you know, be open to feedback, 00:21:09.90\00:21:11.90 but also ask for that feedback, 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.00 ask your direct supervisor, ask the team around you, 00:21:14.04\00:21:17.51 ask people that even know 00:21:17.54\00:21:18.87 who've known you for a long time. 00:21:18.91\00:21:20.38 Hey, what are some areas that 00:21:20.41\00:21:21.74 I could work on or what are some things 00:21:21.78\00:21:23.11 you see about me that 00:21:23.14\00:21:24.48 may affect my leadership in any which direction? 00:21:24.51\00:21:26.58 So asking for feedback, I think will be a huge plus, 00:21:26.61\00:21:30.52 if we see that as a gift. 00:21:30.55\00:21:31.89 Got you. 00:21:31.92\00:21:33.25 And in terms of being a leader, 00:21:33.29\00:21:36.02 how has being 00:21:36.06\00:21:37.39 a leader strengthened your faith? 00:21:37.43\00:21:39.56 Oh, man. 00:21:39.59\00:21:41.20 Yeah, so in many different situations, 00:21:41.23\00:21:43.47 you know, being a leader has taught me that, 00:21:43.50\00:21:46.80 hey, I don't have the answers and it strengthened my faith 00:21:46.84\00:21:49.57 that I have to be 00:21:49.60\00:21:50.94 a representative every single day. 00:21:50.97\00:21:52.97 You can't take a day off as a leader, right? 00:21:53.01\00:21:55.68 You have, you know, downtime, 00:21:55.71\00:21:57.11 right, you have your pay time off, 00:21:57.15\00:21:59.28 but you're always 00:21:59.31\00:22:00.85 on the clock as a leader, you know, 00:22:00.88\00:22:02.62 so your witness, you know, 00:22:02.65\00:22:04.65 whether you like it or not, you know, 00:22:04.69\00:22:06.02 what I'm saying is 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.39 who are you when no one's looking. 00:22:07.42\00:22:09.59 And being that leader, 00:22:09.62\00:22:10.96 you know that integrity piece 00:22:10.99\00:22:12.33 going to what we're talking about earlier, 00:22:12.36\00:22:14.13 it's so important. 00:22:14.16\00:22:15.50 So I do believe that, you know, you need to make sure 00:22:15.53\00:22:18.77 you're aware about your environment, 00:22:18.80\00:22:20.34 you surround yourself. 00:22:20.37\00:22:22.10 But definitely stay connected to church, 00:22:22.14\00:22:23.91 stay connected to God 00:22:23.94\00:22:25.27 because we're all in the same race together. 00:22:25.31\00:22:27.44 We need that community, we need that support. 00:22:27.48\00:22:30.75 And I can't stress enough about 00:22:30.78\00:22:34.18 the power of being connected to God. 00:22:34.22\00:22:36.15 Amen. 00:22:36.18\00:22:37.52 Now, you also do leadership development seminars, 00:22:37.55\00:22:40.09 I don't know when you find 00:22:40.12\00:22:41.46 the time to do all this stuff, but you also do 00:22:41.49\00:22:43.56 leadership development seminars. 00:22:43.59\00:22:45.76 What does that look like? 00:22:45.79\00:22:48.56 Yeah, so, you know, I have a passion. 00:22:48.60\00:22:50.03 I'm a pastor, I have a passion for the church, 00:22:50.07\00:22:51.93 I have a passion for the work getting done. 00:22:51.97\00:22:54.00 And I learned early on, 00:22:54.04\00:22:55.37 you know, through my theology training 00:22:55.40\00:22:57.21 and my pastoral ministry, 00:22:57.24\00:22:58.71 that we have many people in our church 00:22:58.74\00:23:00.68 that want to do God's work, they're excited to do, 00:23:00.71\00:23:03.41 they want to lead, 00:23:03.45\00:23:04.78 but they don't know how to do it, 00:23:04.81\00:23:06.51 or they've been doing it wrong, 00:23:06.55\00:23:08.38 because no one has taught them, right? 00:23:08.42\00:23:11.09 So I enjoy working with church leaders 00:23:11.12\00:23:13.19 and talking about accountability, 00:23:13.22\00:23:14.82 talking about goal setting, right? 00:23:14.86\00:23:16.56 It's not just about we love the Lord 00:23:16.59\00:23:18.39 and as going forward, 00:23:18.43\00:23:19.76 we must do so with precision, with accuracy. 00:23:19.79\00:23:24.73 And we must have a plan and measurable objectives. 00:23:24.77\00:23:28.04 You know, and once we do that, 00:23:28.07\00:23:30.54 we see success, we will have failures. 00:23:30.57\00:23:33.54 But helping leaders understand that guess what, 00:23:33.58\00:23:35.98 there must be order 00:23:36.01\00:23:37.35 in how we approach leadership in the church. 00:23:37.38\00:23:40.05 And I don't believe that, you know, 00:23:40.08\00:23:41.68 people are leaving churches today, 00:23:41.72\00:23:43.28 because they don't believe that you know, 00:23:43.32\00:23:44.82 the gospel, you know, 00:23:44.85\00:23:46.19 it's sometimes lack of organization, 00:23:46.22\00:23:47.56 lack of leadership. 00:23:47.59\00:23:48.92 So I'm able to kind of spend time 00:23:48.96\00:23:50.33 you know, I preach, and I connect with people there 00:23:50.36\00:23:52.73 and inspire them, but I want to move them 00:23:52.76\00:23:54.50 from inspiration to execution. 00:23:54.53\00:23:56.46 Whoa, that is a gem. Say that again. 00:23:56.50\00:24:00.87 It's one thing to be inspired, 00:24:00.90\00:24:02.24 but I want to move leaders from inspiration to execute. 00:24:02.27\00:24:05.17 They're on fire about God. 00:24:05.21\00:24:06.57 They're on fire about the church about ministry, 00:24:06.61\00:24:08.94 but how do we execute on the vision 00:24:08.98\00:24:10.85 He's placed in our hearts? 00:24:10.88\00:24:12.38 Right, so let's start with that vision statement, 00:24:12.41\00:24:14.12 that purpose, 00:24:14.15\00:24:15.48 let's just move to action items, 00:24:15.52\00:24:17.39 action plans so that we can make sure 00:24:17.42\00:24:19.72 we're successful, and the work can continue to happen. 00:24:19.75\00:24:22.26 So that's kind of a highlight of some of the work that I do. 00:24:22.29\00:24:24.93 I truly enjoyed and usually most teams 00:24:24.96\00:24:27.23 I work with, I stay connected with them 00:24:27.26\00:24:29.40 and it's been an enjoyable experience. 00:24:29.43\00:24:31.63 Amen. 00:24:31.67\00:24:33.00 So if somebody wants to check out your website, 00:24:33.03\00:24:35.04 what's your website?
