It was something else.

I was raised in
a Christian home.

My family had a very,

I guess you can say
a high importance upon,

you know, following
the Lord and obeying Him

and taking us to
church frequently.

And I'll never
forget growing up.

It was a common
thing for us always to,

to go to prayer meeting
and go to a worship service.

And one of the
things that I really enjoyed

was that my parents,
even outside of church,

they tried to raise
us with moral values.

And so that was always there

and instilled in my
mind growing up as a child.

But you know, you can
be raised a certain way,

but you have to make a decision
yourself to accept Jesus.

And so that
eventually came later on down,

but I'll never forget my
family and my mom and my dad,

my brother and my
sister growing up,

we had a music
ministry, so we traveled,

Days should I say it,
how do we say in ministry?

I was going to say, you sing?
00:01:52.47\00:01:53.94
Well, I sing a little,
00:01:53.98\00:01:55.31
but mostly, mostly it was them.

And they would
travel from church to church

and they would do concerts
for all of these churches

and all the
churches that we went to.

And it would be a
multi-denominational,

you know, there would be
all kinds of churches that would

have us to come
out and do concerts.

And so in doing that, we got to,

you know, really travel in

and study and visit with a lot

of different
church denominations.

And it was in
the process of that,

that we eventually started
learning about the ministry

of Amazing Facts, the
one that I currently have

the privilege to work for today.

And so it was a revolutionary
time period in our lives,

but yeah, it was awesome, man.

So you mentioned
something a minute ago

about not really
knowing Jesus for yourself,

or you had to
experience Jesus for yourself.

At what point did you
experience Jesus for yourself

and what brought that about?

Yeah, so I was raised,

you know, like I said,
in church and the problem,

I guess you can
say for a lot of kids,

young kids, especially
00:02:48.36\00:02:49.83
is that they hear
a lot about Jesus.

They hear a lot about religion.
00:02:51.83\00:02:53.17
They hear a lot about
the do's and don'ts of life.
00:02:53.20\00:02:55.80
But one of the things I think
that a lot of people fail to do
00:02:55.84\00:02:58.54
is to allow that
consistency to be in their life,
00:02:58.57\00:03:01.24
to where there's a true change.
00:03:01.28\00:03:03.24
And so while my parents
had always been religious,
00:03:03.28\00:03:06.21
you know, they'd always been,
you know focused on the Lord
00:03:06.25\00:03:08.75
and trying to live for the Lord.

But growing up, me and
my brother and my sister,
00:03:10.52\00:03:12.55
we were very
violent, repulsive kids.
00:03:12.59\00:03:14.42
You know, we had our own,
00:03:14.46\00:03:16.69
we had our own
problems that we had to,
00:03:16.73\00:03:18.69
you know, Jesus
said to Nicodemus,
00:03:18.73\00:03:20.66
you must be born again, right?
00:03:20.70\00:03:22.36
There's something wrong
there with your first birth
00:03:22.40\00:03:24.33
and you need to have a
new heart and a new mind.
00:03:24.37\00:03:26.77
And so growing up, I saw,
00:03:26.80\00:03:28.74
you know, all of the carnality
00:03:28.77\00:03:30.11
and the frivolity that
was in my, was in myself
00:03:30.14\00:03:32.37
and that was
within my, my siblings.

And it really didn't take place
00:03:34.48\00:03:35.84
until I started
seeing a relationship

in my brother change.

To tell the story,
I'll make it shorter,

but to tell the story
is actually quite funny

because I was,

as much as I'd been
raised up in a Christian home,
00:03:47.29\00:03:49.26
I was actually
becoming a borderline atheist.
00:03:49.29\00:03:52.56
And it was, it
was very interesting.

I had been raised up to
hear about this man named Jesus
00:03:54.80\00:03:57.23
that I heard people talk
about this man named Jesus,
00:03:57.27\00:03:59.90
but I had never seen Jesus
myself ever change anybody.

And so I was going to school.
00:04:04.77\00:04:07.31
I was kind of a
teenager at the time
00:04:07.34\00:04:08.74
and during my teenage
years, about 14 years old.
00:04:08.78\00:04:11.95
And God basically, you
know, was convicting my heart,
00:04:11.98\00:04:15.05
but I didn't recognize it
at the time it had to be Him.

And so I was going to school
00:04:17.92\00:04:19.32
and I kept having
all of these thoughts
00:04:19.35\00:04:20.69
while God was
convicting my heart,

the devil was also after me.

And the devil kept
putting these thoughts in my,
00:04:23.79\00:04:26.09
in my mind, you
know, if God's so good
00:04:26.13\00:04:28.03
and He's real, then
why is the world so bad?

Wow, that's a question
that a lot of people ask too.

That is, it's a
very popular question.

And perhaps as I travel,
00:04:35.14\00:04:36.50
that's the most
popular question that I get,

especially from the
youth and young people.

And so I began to have
these thoughts in my mind

at 14 years old.

And I got bullied
in school a little bit.

And so when I went through
a tough year of bullying,

it really hit me
hard when I was about 14.

And I thought, you know,
00:04:52.32\00:04:53.66
I just not so sure that
this whole Jesus thing is real.

And so I started to question
it and I'll never forget

during the
process of all of that,

my brother was really
starting to have an interest
00:05:03.00\00:05:06.27
in spiritual things

and starting to have
an interest in God's Word.

And I'll never forget one
day he walks in the living room
00:05:09.84\00:05:12.27
and he tells my parents,
00:05:12.31\00:05:13.64
I think God's
calling me into the ministry.

I think I want to be a minister.

And my parents'
response was like,

oh, that's so good son.

We're so happy to hear
that and all of this, right?

And I'm just sitting there like,

like, come on,

you guys are not
buying this right now, right?

Because in my, in
my home growing up,

you know, me and my
brother, we were siblings
00:05:33.23\00:05:34.73
and we competed with
each other on everything.
00:05:34.76\00:05:37.73
And so I saw the
dark side of Ryan.
00:05:37.77\00:05:39.43
He saw the dark side of me.
00:05:39.47\00:05:41.30
And so growing
up, I'll never forget,

you know, Ryan, he
was an older brother,
00:05:45.17\00:05:47.14
so I was always
trying to be with him
00:05:47.18\00:05:48.64
and his friends, you know?
00:05:48.68\00:05:50.18
And so he was just doing
00:05:50.21\00:05:51.55
what an older
brother generally would do,
00:05:51.58\00:05:53.01
you know, hey,
Dakota, get out of here.

You know, we want
to, we want to hang out.

You know, we want
to have teenage time
00:05:56.02\00:05:57.79
and you're a little kid,
you know, and stuff like that.

So it wasn't until

I started seeing
changes in my brother

and then one day
I'll never forget.

You know, my
'cause when he made that,

when he made that
initial statement,

I was thinking, this is a joke.

I mean, he's only
saying this about,

you know, he thinks God's
calling him into the ministry

because well, let's face it.

He wants to make
mom and dad proud.
00:06:20.44\00:06:22.91
And so I'm laughing inside
00:06:22.94\00:06:25.38
thinking, this is so ridiculous
00:06:25.41\00:06:26.98
mom, and dad's all happy.
00:06:27.02\00:06:28.35
So I go to my room and
I'm just like chilling.

And I kind of think it's just
a phase and it'll phase out.

Well, it didn't.

Some months had went by

and every time I'd
walk into my brother's room,

you know,
generally we would play

video games together, growing up

and I'd walk in his
room and I'd be like,

hey Ryan, do you want
to play the video game?

And I'm watching
him sitting on his bed

and he's watching

smiling from ear to ear.

It looked like he slept
with the hanger in his mouth,

preaching his heart out.

And I'm like,
and I remember seeing
00:06:54.44\00:06:56.21
this Mark Finley guy,
00:06:56.24\00:06:57.58
you know, make my
parents cry on the TV.
00:06:57.61\00:06:59.61
I didn't know who this guy was,
00:06:59.65\00:07:00.98
but I thought, you
know, this is interesting.

He's studying the Bible.
00:07:02.68\00:07:04.42
And I would ask Ryan,
you want to go play the game?
00:07:04.45\00:07:06.02
And he's like, nah,
maybe later I'll play with you.

But right now I'm
studying the Bible.

And I'm just
like, that is so weird.

Wow.

Like, and I, and I
left the room thinking

he must only be doing that

because he's
trying to learn enough

to sound smart.

Now, how old was
he at this point?

And how old were
you at this point?

Oh, Ryan.

I was 14,

so Ryan's always been four
and a half years older than me.

So he was roughly around 18,

you know, approaching adulthood.

And so you know, he
had his maturity level

a lot faster than me being
four and a half years older.

And so I still had a lot
of worldliness in my heart,

a lot of worldliness there.

And so when I saw my brother

though start
making these changes,

it started to really
spark in my own life,

like, okay, this is weird.

You know, I've
never seen my brother

act like this before.

And then one day

he made a
statement to his girlfriend

at the time.

And he basically told her,

listen, if you can't make
Jesus number one in your life,

then we can't be together

because this relationship
is going to be unequally yoked,

and it's not going to work.

Wow.

And the girlfriend
that he had at the time,

she was like one of the
most popular girls at school.

I mean, she was just, you know,

all that in a bag of
chips, right at school.
00:08:12.22\00:08:14.42
And I'm thinking to myself,
I'm sitting in the backseat
00:08:14.46\00:08:16.73
of the vehicle and I'm like,
00:08:16.76\00:08:19.59
you know, I'm
like rubbing my ears.
00:08:19.63\00:08:20.96
Like, are you kidding me?
Like he just sent that to her.

And I just, I
couldn't believe my ears.

And I, there I
was in the backseat

of that car that night.

And I looked at my
brother and I thought, okay,

whatever, my brother has
this relationship with Jesus,

it must be real.

And I saw tears in
his eyes as he had made

the appeal to his girlfriend

who later became his wife today.

And he made the appeal
to her to give God a chance,

you know, because she
was young too growing up

and you have all
the poles of the world,

you know, pulling at your heart.
00:08:53.33\00:08:55.10
And so when he
made that appeal to her,

I knew, you know,
'cause he loved her more

than anything in the world.

But when I saw him put
Jesus number one in his life,

put her on the
back seat, so to speak.

Put her in number two,

I thought that is
something marvelous.

And I want to know,

I want to get to know the God
that my brother's got to know.

So that's kind of
what it transitioned for me

in getting to
meet Jesus for myself

And see that's, that's
powerful because you know,

one, your brother
was around 18 years old
00:09:24.43\00:09:27.60
that said at a
time in life where,
00:09:27.63\00:09:30.80
you know, you're kind of like,

oh, I'm grown, but you know,
00:09:32.20\00:09:34.14
you might still
be living at home,
00:09:34.17\00:09:35.60
but you're grown, but you know,
00:09:35.64\00:09:37.21
and you're trying
to figure things out.

And that's a time where
the world is pulling at you,

you know, along with
credit card companies

and everybody else.

But you know, the
world is pulling at you

and there's so much
temptation out there.

He made a solid
stand for God at that age

and was like, well, I don't
have time to play video games

right now because I'm
studying the Word of God

and then talk to his, his
now while his then girlfriend,

but now wife
about accepting Christ

or making Christ
number one, that's huge.
00:10:06.13\00:10:09.24
You know, I, and
what amazes me, Jason,

about the whole
thing is that my brother,
00:10:11.31\00:10:13.07
he had no idea
00:10:13.11\00:10:14.54
the impact that made
on my life at the time.

Now looking back,
I've told him the story,

he's heard it a thousand times.
00:10:18.35\00:10:19.68
I mean, you know, it was,
00:10:19.71\00:10:21.05
but, but then he had no
idea that I was watching him.

I was waiting for
him to mess up, you know?

And you know, I just
want to throw this out there

for those that might be watching

it's in the times
of the greatest trials

that people watch you the most.

you make some profession

that you've come to know Jesus,

people are watching you,

paying attention to you

and I'll never forget

when my brother
made that statement.

I knew then, it
was then that I knew

that God had changed him.

And this is a
different person. I don't know.

I don't recognize
this brother of mine.

And so I just
want to say for those

that might be watching now

your family, your friends,

your loved ones are watching you

on a daily basis

and how you treat them

and how you ultimately respond

to Jesus on a daily
basis is going to be,

impact that you can make

within your circle of influence.

And so absolutely

that was the
transitioning moment for me.

So that night I went home

and I walked into
my mother's bedroom

and I said, mom, I want a Bible.

And she actually said to me,

she said, what for?

I got, yeah, I know,
right? Can you believe it?

She said what for?

And because I had, that
was something they never

heard you ever talking
about I wanted to study

the Bible or read the Bible.

And I said to her
that night, I said, mom,

I want to get to
know Jesus for myself.

So that night I opened my Bible.

It took the Bible and
I, I turned open to Genesis

Chapter 1 and I
read, in the beginning,

God created the
heavens and the earth.

And that that's when my
relationship with Jesus started

at 14 years old.

How did you go
about, you know, okay,

now you've developed
this relationship with Jesus,

but how did you discover
God's purpose for your life?

That's a great question,
man. That was a great question.

So 'cause like early
on, I was so young, right?

And when you go to
school, Jason, and I know,

you know, this, you
know, we all go to school

and they build you up
to become something, right?

And that's very important.

We need to do
something with our lives.

And so when I
was going to school,

the school that I went
to this specific high school

at the time, that was
really building us up,

you know, to go
to college and to,

you know, get that
four year degree or,

you know, master's
degree and then whatever,

and to get a high paying job,

to make lots of
money, because that's

what life's all about, right?

Making lots of money.

That's what they try to,
