00:01:16.74\00:01:19.04 You know, at first I remember meeting CA, 00:01:19.07\00:01:22.04 I think that was in 2012, but then 00:01:22.08\00:01:25.05 I want to say it was 3ABN Today or 3ABN, 00:01:25.08\00:01:26.98 one of those programs. 00:01:27.02\00:01:28.35 And I did the program with you guys in 2014 00:01:28.38\00:01:30.39 on the Chew's Challenge. 00:01:30.42\00:01:31.75 So, you know, 00:01:31.79\00:01:33.12 3ABN have been a big part of my life 00:01:33.15\00:01:34.49 for the last, you know, 10, 10, 12, 13 years now. 00:01:34.52\00:01:36.96 So that's amazing, so. 00:01:36.99\00:01:38.33 You've been a big part of ours as well. 00:01:38.36\00:01:40.80 And we're so thankful for you and for your ministry. 00:01:40.83\00:01:44.17 For those who are not familiar with your journey, 00:01:44.20\00:01:47.50 would you share a bit of that with us? 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.27 Let us know, like, what, where'd you come from? 00:01:49.30\00:01:52.44 Where are you from? 00:01:52.47\00:01:54.44 Yeah, you know, I always, like to, 00:01:54.48\00:01:55.81 I say to everybody, I say, I look, I'm a country boy. 00:01:55.84\00:01:57.31 I grew up in Southern Maryland 00:01:57.35\00:01:59.41 about one, about 45 minutes, south of Washington, DC. 00:01:59.45\00:02:04.12 And crazy story, my daddy actually was a sharecropper 00:02:04.15\00:02:06.96 growing up. 00:02:06.99\00:02:08.32 And when I was born in 1982, he was still sharecropping. 00:02:08.36\00:02:10.93 So my father was in my father's family, 00:02:10.96\00:02:12.86 very country folk, you know, we ate, 00:02:12.89\00:02:14.93 you know, I talked about food, we ate everything. 00:02:14.96\00:02:16.73 You know, we had eggs, we ate it. 00:02:16.77\00:02:18.33 If it had a mama, we ate it, you know, squirrel, 00:02:18.37\00:02:21.60 you know, I miss possum by 10 years, 00:02:21.64\00:02:24.31 thanking Lord for that. 00:02:24.34\00:02:28.04 But, you know, ironically or kind of weird story, 00:02:28.08\00:02:31.11 my mother's side of the family was Seventh-day Adventist. 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.31 And so while my father's side of the family 00:02:33.35\00:02:34.78 was heavy meat eaters, 00:02:34.82\00:02:36.38 you know, my mother's side of the family were vegetarians. 00:02:36.42\00:02:38.79 So I grew up, you know, in this, 00:02:38.82\00:02:40.76 you know, country environment, real slow pace. 00:02:40.79\00:02:43.26 We love to eat, 00:02:43.29\00:02:44.63 but my mother's side of the family, 00:02:44.66\00:02:45.99 like I said was vegetarian, my daddy's side of the family 00:02:46.03\00:02:47.93 were heavy meat eaters. 00:02:47.96\00:02:49.43 And so I got, kind of got exposed to everything, 00:02:49.46\00:02:52.50 you know, at a young age. 00:02:52.53\00:02:53.87 And eventually, 00:02:53.90\00:02:55.24 you know, I started gravitating to a more, 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.04 you know, vegetarian lifestyle as I got older. 00:02:57.07\00:02:59.31 So, yeah, yeah. 00:02:59.34\00:03:00.68 So I grew up in the country 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.24 and a lot of good eating, good folks 00:03:02.28\00:03:04.18 and had a great childhood growing up. 00:03:04.21\00:03:06.72 And when was your family a Christian family or? 00:03:06.75\00:03:11.49 You know... 00:03:11.52\00:03:12.85 Yeah, so my mom was raised Seventh-day Adventist, 00:03:12.89\00:03:15.22 my dad didn't really go to church too much, 00:03:15.26\00:03:16.96 but my mother said, sit and meet in the church 00:03:16.99\00:03:18.99 with my uncle and my aunt. 00:03:19.03\00:03:20.36 Uncle still a pastor in Maryland still. 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.83 But I grew up, started going 00:03:23.87\00:03:25.33 to the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:25.37\00:03:26.70 when I was in third grade. 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.37 So all the way from third grade 00:03:28.40\00:03:31.34 till I graduated from high school. 00:03:31.37\00:03:32.71 It's kind of interesting story when I got to high school, 00:03:32.74\00:03:34.68 but I started going to church 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.31 from third grade all the way through, 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.31 but I wasn't practicing at home. 00:03:38.35\00:03:40.05 So it was pretty much, I was the kid 00:03:40.08\00:03:42.08 that, you know, my uncle and my aunt 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.22 who pretty much took care of me on Sabbath in essence. 00:03:44.25\00:03:46.99 They took, you know, took me to church. 00:03:47.02\00:03:48.49 And I remember every week 00:03:48.52\00:03:49.96 I'd love to go to church for the potlucks. 00:03:49.99\00:03:51.69 I love to get the food. 00:03:51.73\00:03:54.66 You know, I wanted to go to church 00:03:54.70\00:03:56.87 to get the good food. 00:03:56.90\00:03:58.23 That was, that's what got me excited. 00:03:58.27\00:03:59.60 So that was really what kept me coming, 00:03:59.63\00:04:01.37 but also the message, 00:04:01.40\00:04:02.74 you know, I learned a lot as a child 00:04:02.77\00:04:04.94 and eventually kind of crazy story 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.68 when I became a senior in high school. 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.18 I had a full track scholarship to go to Howard University. 00:04:09.21\00:04:13.08 And it was crazy. 00:04:13.11\00:04:14.55 I was, I knew about the Sabbath 00:04:14.58\00:04:16.18 and I, but I didn't, you know, really wasn't following yet. 00:04:16.22\00:04:18.65 I didn't have to, my parents didn't force me 00:04:18.69\00:04:20.32 to keep the Sabbath or nothing like that, 00:04:20.36\00:04:21.69 but, but I wanted to follow the Sabbath 00:04:21.72\00:04:23.83 and I had the scholarship, 00:04:23.86\00:04:25.83 but most of the track races was on Saturday. 00:04:25.86\00:04:28.50 Once I signed a scholarship 00:04:28.53\00:04:30.53 about almost a week later 00:04:30.57\00:04:32.17 after I signed the scholarship to go to Howard University, 00:04:32.20\00:04:35.10 which is one of the leading, you know, HBCUs in the country. 00:04:35.14\00:04:37.94 My leg breaks in a race. 00:04:37.97\00:04:39.71 I mean, I don't know if you're gonna understand. 00:04:39.74\00:04:41.08 So I'm literally 17 years old. 00:04:41.11\00:04:42.98 I'm about to graduate high school. 00:04:43.01\00:04:44.41 I just got a full scholarship 00:04:44.45\00:04:45.78 to go to Howard University, paid for, 00:04:45.81\00:04:47.88 my leg breaks in a race 00:04:47.92\00:04:49.75 right after I signed the scholarship. 00:04:49.78\00:04:51.62 And all I could really feel and hear from the, 00:04:51.65\00:04:54.02 you know, the Holy Spirit is kind of urging me 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.59 that I shouldn't take the scholarship 00:04:56.62\00:04:58.26 because I'll be breaking the Sabbath 00:04:58.29\00:04:59.86 and, you know, crazy story, I ended up going to the coach 00:04:59.89\00:05:03.23 at Howard University and saying, 00:05:03.26\00:05:04.60 Hey, I'm not gonna accept the scholarship. 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.63 I'm gonna keep the seventh day Sabbath. 00:05:06.67\00:05:08.74 And that honestly began my personal journey 00:05:08.77\00:05:11.54 as a Christian, 00:05:11.57\00:05:12.91 as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 00:05:12.94\00:05:14.44 as a Sabbath keeper. 00:05:14.48\00:05:15.81 And it has taught me that, 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.51 you know, Christianity comes with the cost. 00:05:17.55\00:05:19.61 And that was really the, the big leap for me 00:05:19.65\00:05:22.65 and my faith was that experience. 00:05:22.68\00:05:24.65 And from that day forward, I've been, you know, 00:05:24.69\00:05:27.12 been in this journey as a Christian 00:05:27.16\00:05:29.02 and then trying to learn 00:05:29.06\00:05:30.39 how to follow Jesus with all of my heart. 00:05:30.43\00:05:32.19 Oh, that's beautiful. 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.00 Isn't it interesting 00:05:34.03\00:05:35.36 how the Holy Spirit will intervene in our lives 00:05:35.40\00:05:39.13 and in such unexpected ways? 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.34 You know, it's just unexpected the way He intervenes, 00:05:42.37\00:05:46.07 like breaking your leg, right 00:05:46.11\00:05:48.58 just as you were getting ready to embark 00:05:48.61\00:05:51.61 upon that whole career. 00:05:51.65\00:05:53.28 That career could have led you away from God 00:05:53.31\00:05:56.69 for a life time. 00:05:56.72\00:05:58.05 Yes. Yes. 00:05:58.09\00:05:59.42 So the Lord is so merciful. 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.56 And you know my... 00:06:01.59\00:06:02.92 You know, I was having a big ego growing up 00:06:02.96\00:06:04.66 and I think God was like, yeah, 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.03 if this boy go start running and start getting all these, 00:06:06.06\00:06:08.80 you know, all this, this is not going to be a good place. 00:06:08.83\00:06:10.97 I think the Holy Spirit, like you said, 00:06:11.00\00:06:12.33 he knew what was good for me. 00:06:12.37\00:06:13.87 And I thank God for what he did. 00:06:13.90\00:06:15.34 I would not change it for the world. 00:06:15.37\00:06:17.17 Yes. Yes. 00:06:17.21\00:06:18.94 Amen. Amen. 00:06:18.97\00:06:20.44 So when you were a young boy, 00:06:20.48\00:06:23.14 were you into cooking or did that happen later? 00:06:23.18\00:06:27.38 Nah, man, my mama said, look, 00:06:27.42\00:06:29.38 one day you might not get, you might not get married 00:06:29.42\00:06:31.75 and I'm going to teach you how to cook 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.12 'cause she made me to cook. 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.49 That's a good mama right there. 00:06:34.52\00:06:35.96 That's a good mom. 00:06:35.99\00:06:37.86 So when I was seven, eight years old, 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.80 I remember, you know, learning how to do, 00:06:40.83\00:06:43.23 you know this, I mean, this simple stuff, 00:06:43.26\00:06:45.23 you know, make an oatmeal, you know, to make, 00:06:45.27\00:06:47.44 you know, the old school, top ramen noodles, 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.47 you know, I call them ooza noodles growing up, 00:06:49.50\00:06:51.97 but this basic stuff. 00:06:52.01\00:06:53.34 And as I got little older, like more like in middle school, 00:06:53.38\00:06:55.81 I learned how to fry chicken and, 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.11 you know, mamas, you know, kind of just 00:06:58.15\00:06:59.68 taught me the tricks of the trade, 00:06:59.71\00:07:01.05 my daddy also was a cook as well. 00:07:01.08\00:07:02.58 So he all see it. 00:07:02.62\00:07:03.95 My father was a chef, you know, he had a specific recipes and, 00:07:03.99\00:07:07.26 you know, my mother had her thing. 00:07:07.29\00:07:08.62 She made her mac and cheese, 00:07:08.66\00:07:09.99 so sweet potato pie, her potato salad. 00:07:10.03\00:07:11.89 And so my family took a lot of pride 00:07:11.93\00:07:13.86 in what they made. 00:07:13.90\00:07:15.26 And as I got a little older, I started wanting to make 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.30 my little special recipes. 00:07:17.33\00:07:18.67 And so it was the culture of my family. 00:07:18.70\00:07:20.14 We love to eat. 00:07:20.17\00:07:21.50 Everybody had their signature recipes 00:07:21.54\00:07:23.24 and it was a part of my family's culture, 00:07:23.27\00:07:25.37 Thanksgiving and Christmas and the summer cookouts, 00:07:25.41\00:07:28.54 all those are big events centered around 00:07:28.58\00:07:30.61 good eating and good food. 00:07:30.65\00:07:31.98 So that I really, you know, never forgotten. 00:07:32.01\00:07:33.65 Did my aunt and my uncle side, 00:07:33.68\00:07:35.42 my mother's side of the family, they were vegetarian. 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.62 So they made the vegetarian scallops and, 00:07:37.65\00:07:40.42 you know, they had ready burger 00:07:40.46\00:07:41.79 and all these different, special K, 00:07:41.82\00:07:43.43 all these vegetarian dishes 00:07:43.46\00:07:45.13 that I'd never heard of, but they tasted good though. 00:07:45.16\00:07:48.63 So I got excited about vegetarian food 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.33 because it tasted good at a young age, 00:07:51.37\00:07:53.17 even though I wasn't doing it at home, 00:07:53.20\00:07:54.70 if that makes sense. 00:07:54.74\00:07:56.07 Yeah. And, you know, it's so important that it tastes good. 00:07:56.10\00:07:59.17 Like, you know, it could be... 00:07:59.21\00:08:02.21 It could be healthy, but if it's nasty, 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.11 nobody wants to eat it, 00:08:05.15\00:08:07.58 but if it's healthy and it tastes good, what, 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.75 so that's what was happening with you. 00:08:10.79\00:08:12.62 You were exposed to healthy foods 00:08:12.65\00:08:15.52 that taste good. 00:08:15.56\00:08:16.89 And by the way, you are making me 00:08:16.93\00:08:18.26 so hungry right now. 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.66 I get so hungry 00:08:19.69\00:08:21.03 thinking about that, those scallops, 00:08:21.06\00:08:23.06 those vegetarian scallops. 00:08:23.10\00:08:24.63 What? 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.00 So anyway. 00:08:26.03\00:08:29.04 So, that's how you got into the vegan cooking 00:08:29.07\00:08:33.38 because you got exposed to it 00:08:33.41\00:08:35.34 through your mother's side of the family? 00:08:35.38\00:08:36.81 Yeah. 00:08:36.85\00:08:38.18 So that kind of started, I got exposed early. 00:08:38.21\00:08:39.95 So by the time now, you know, I'm 17 years old, 00:08:39.98\00:08:42.65 I quit my scholarship. 00:08:42.68\00:08:44.02 You know, now that I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:08:44.05\00:08:46.15 And I started changing my lifestyle. 00:08:46.19\00:08:47.72 So, you know, I became a vegetarian. 00:08:47.76\00:08:51.03 But again, I was the person 00:08:51.06\00:08:52.73 that ate chicken, fried chicken. 00:08:52.76\00:08:54.10 That was three, four times a week, you know? 00:08:54.13\00:08:56.43 So as I became a vegetarian, 00:08:56.46\00:08:58.87 I started missing what I grew up on. 00:08:58.90\00:09:01.27 So I wanted to, you know, figure out 00:09:01.30\00:09:03.67 how to make the things that I love the most. 00:09:03.71\00:09:05.07 And so eventually went from vegetarian to vegan. 00:09:05.11\00:09:08.68 But again, this is 2001, you know, 00:09:08.71\00:09:10.75 so this is before plant-based and veganism, 00:09:10.78\00:09:13.52 was mostly vegetarian. 00:09:13.55\00:09:14.88 It wasn't, you know, it was kind of unavailable. 00:09:14.92\00:09:16.75 So I began learning 00:09:16.79\00:09:18.12 how to make stuff from scratch myself. 00:09:18.15\00:09:19.49 So I got cookbooks, old school cookbooks. 00:09:19.52\00:09:22.46 I found a cookbook called Country Life cookbook, 00:09:22.49\00:09:24.99 one of the old Seventh-day Adventist cookbooks, 00:09:25.03\00:09:26.63 another one called Ten Talents. 00:09:26.66\00:09:28.93 And I started taking these cookbooks 00:09:28.96\00:09:30.57 and started this going through recipe by recipe, 00:09:30.60\00:09:33.20 learning how to make these good foods. 00:09:33.23\00:09:36.44 But, you know, I have my own little twist to it. 00:09:36.47\00:09:38.17 I always add a little spice, my little special seasoning, 00:09:38.21\00:09:40.74 you know, 00:09:40.78\00:09:42.11 and so that creative spirit was there early on. 00:09:42.14\00:09:45.05 And eventually I kind of got excited 00:09:45.08\00:09:47.22 about making my own vegetarian chicken. 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.18 So I had my first product called 00:09:49.22\00:09:50.62 believe it's not honey, barbecue chicken, 00:09:50.65\00:09:52.85 you know, look like chicken, 00:09:52.89\00:09:54.26 tastes like chicken, but guess what? 00:09:54.29\00:09:55.92 It ain't chicken. 00:09:55.96\00:09:57.29 So, you know, I started in 2004 00:09:57.33\00:10:00.80 when I started developing, 00:10:00.83\00:10:02.40 you know, my first iterations of my products 00:10:02.43\00:10:04.40 that I'm even still doing today 00:10:04.43\00:10:06.13 so, you know, again, it was really that creative spirit, 00:10:06.17\00:10:09.40 this knowing, and I had you know, 00:10:09.44\00:10:10.87 growing up eating meat, 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.24 I know what it should taste like. 00:10:12.27\00:10:13.61 And I also had a passion for stuff that, 00:10:13.64\00:10:14.98 you know, it had to taste good. 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.34 I don't want though, you know, sometimes 00:10:16.38\00:10:17.71 I didn't have vegetarian food. 00:10:17.75\00:10:19.08 The food looked like it's, looked like sandpaper. 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.62 I mean, you don't know what stuff it is, 00:10:20.65\00:10:21.98 it looked like dog food. 00:10:22.02\00:10:23.35 So I'm like, we ain't making no dog food. 00:10:23.39\00:10:24.79 You know what I mean, 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.15 stuff that tastes good, you know. 00:10:26.19\00:10:27.52 So, that was kind of the passion. 00:10:27.56\00:10:29.86 And over time, I mean, I'll tell you the Holy Spirit, 00:10:29.89\00:10:32.49 he started coming in. 00:10:32.53\00:10:34.00 And it's amazing 00:10:34.03\00:10:35.93 when you read our writings of our church, 00:10:35.96\00:10:37.90 Ellen White talked about, 00:10:37.93\00:10:39.27 you know, that there'll be young men and young women 00:10:39.30\00:10:41.80 that will learn how to make recipes 00:10:41.84\00:10:43.27 without the use of flesh and meats, 00:10:43.30\00:10:44.67 you know, from simple ingredients. 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.41 And I read some of these statements from her 00:10:46.44\00:10:48.44 and I believed it. 00:10:48.48\00:10:49.81 And I tell you, God came through, 00:10:49.84\00:10:52.01 taught me some secrets in 2007, 00:10:52.05\00:10:54.35 I learned some techniques 00:10:54.38\00:10:55.78 on how to take different types of grains and beans 00:10:55.82\00:10:59.82 and how to create my own texture 00:10:59.85\00:11:01.49 that has a very meat like texture. 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.19 And so that was my first iteration 00:11:03.22\00:11:04.83 of some of the tech, 00:11:04.86\00:11:06.19 the technical, you know, technology, 00:11:06.23\00:11:07.56 you know, they call it technology in my industry, 00:11:07.60\00:11:09.23 but it was some of the simple concepts 00:11:09.26\00:11:11.40 that I learned early 00:11:11.43\00:11:12.77 that I've built on for the last 15 years. 00:11:12.80\00:11:15.00 You know what we're doing in the day, 00:11:15.04\00:11:16.37 but that's where it began in my mama's kitchen, 00:11:16.40\00:11:18.44 learning how to cook in my mama's kitchen 00:11:18.47\00:11:19.81 staying up all night, 00:11:19.84\00:11:21.18 cooking and blending and making noise 00:11:21.21\00:11:22.88 and all that, and it started that. 00:11:22.91\00:11:24.91 Yeah, yeah. See, that's so great. 00:11:24.95\00:11:27.42 And one of the things too, that's so important is texture. 00:11:27.45\00:11:31.45 It can't, it has to, it's so good 00:11:31.49\00:11:34.52 when the texture is similar to the original, 00:11:34.56\00:11:37.43 or some people will say, 00:11:37.46\00:11:38.89 well, why are you trying to imitate the original? 00:11:38.93\00:11:40.96 Well, because when people are transitioning 00:11:41.00\00:11:43.73 into another diet or lifestyle, 00:11:43.77\00:11:46.87 it's important to have a similar texture 00:11:46.90\00:11:50.57 I think rather than one that is already foreign, 00:11:50.61\00:11:54.08 that you're eating just vegetables, 00:11:54.11\00:11:55.68 you know, and grain and stuff like that. 00:11:55.71\00:11:57.38 And then, but so if you have the texture, 00:11:57.41\00:12:00.78 that's similar to the original, 00:12:00.82\00:12:02.58 I just think it makes some such a difference. 00:12:02.62\00:12:06.19 And that's so important 00:12:06.22\00:12:07.56 now that I didn't shared from my childhood, 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.46 most of my family members, 00:12:09.49\00:12:10.83 especially on my father's side begin to get that, 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.96 get different diseases. 00:12:14.00\00:12:15.40 So, you know, diet, diabetes, heart disease, 00:12:15.43\00:12:19.47 cancer, all of these lifestyle diseases 00:12:19.50\00:12:22.47 began plaguing our families and my aunts and uncles 00:12:22.50\00:12:24.74 are in their 40s in their early 50s. 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.24 And it's sad to say by the time I was 17, 18, 00:12:27.28\00:12:30.28 they begin to die. 00:12:30.31\00:12:31.65 I mean, it's like this 55 years old. 00:12:31.68\00:12:33.88 And there, I mean, literally one by one, it's a sad story. 00:12:33.92\00:12:37.39 My family began, they began to have lifestyle 00:12:37.42\00:12:39.85 disease that was causing death. 00:12:39.89\00:12:41.69 And so it became more of a life or death issue, 00:12:41.72\00:12:45.03 whereas that if I could make products that has this, 00:12:45.06\00:12:47.56 like you said, that texture, that tastes, 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.37 that experience that they were familiar with, 00:12:50.40\00:12:52.73 you know, this product can literally save people's lives 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.24 because it can get them off of the foods 00:12:55.27\00:12:57.31 that's causing the death. 00:12:57.34\00:12:59.01 You know, these heavy, high meat diets, 00:12:59.04\00:13:01.31 high in dairy and all these things 00:13:01.34\00:13:03.78 that's just causing the, 00:13:03.81\00:13:05.81 you know, excess fat and our lifestyles, 00:13:05.85\00:13:07.62 cholesterol, et cetera, et cetera. 00:13:07.65\00:13:08.98 So yeah, this is a life or death issue for me 00:13:09.02\00:13:11.72 and texture and taste is so critical. 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.99 Yes. Yeah. 00:13:14.02\00:13:15.99 It's so important to make the connection 00:13:16.02\00:13:19.59 between nutrition and lifestyle, 00:13:19.63\00:13:22.56 between nutrition and life expectancy, 00:13:22.60\00:13:25.83 between nutrition and disease. 00:13:25.87\00:13:28.40 Because I think that, 00:13:28.44\00:13:31.11 especially in the black communities, 00:13:31.14\00:13:33.27 we have such a high level of lifestyle 00:13:33.31\00:13:37.75 induced diseases 00:13:37.78\00:13:40.22 and we often don't connect them to diet 00:13:40.25\00:13:43.39 and they are so connected to our nutrition. 00:13:43.42\00:13:46.82 And so, you know, 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.56 for those who are transitioning, 00:13:49.59\00:13:52.63 it's so important to actually add 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.26 so much more vegetables into the diet, green foods, 00:13:55.30\00:14:00.04 because there's so many foods that are acidic 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.67 and creating an internal acidic environment. 00:14:02.70\00:14:06.04 And the... 00:14:06.07\00:14:07.41 We know that the vegetables have, 00:14:07.44\00:14:10.31 they changed the internal environment 00:14:10.35\00:14:12.55 to a more alkaline environment, 00:14:12.58\00:14:14.42 which is not conducive to disease. 00:14:14.45\00:14:16.82 So once we realize that, 00:14:16.85\00:14:19.25 you know, we can adjust our diets accordingly, 00:14:19.29\00:14:22.52 and it's important to realize that connection. 00:14:22.56\00:14:27.26 And what I'm hearing you say is that this is more than just 00:14:27.30\00:14:31.90 a career move for you. 00:14:31.93\00:14:35.07 This is a passion for you 00:14:35.10\00:14:36.94 because of what happened in your family, 00:14:36.97\00:14:39.77 because of its impact on your family. 00:14:39.81\00:14:43.08 You've made the decision 00:14:43.11\00:14:45.15 to make some delicious vegan foods. 00:14:45.18\00:14:48.95 I've tasted some by the way, and we'll get to that, 00:14:48.98\00:14:51.49 and they are indeed delicious. 00:14:51.52\00:14:53.82 So, yeah, yeah. 00:14:53.86\00:14:56.16 So, that I think is, is so important for our viewers 00:14:56.19\00:15:01.76 to see that this is more than just a career for you. 00:15:01.80\00:15:05.43 This is a personal issue for you, 00:15:05.47\00:15:08.24 because you saw so many of your family members 00:15:08.27\00:15:11.01 plagued with disease 00:15:11.04\00:15:12.81 as a result of what they were eating. 00:15:12.84\00:15:15.31 And you came up with some recipes. 00:15:15.34\00:15:17.45 What were some of the first things you made 00:15:17.48\00:15:20.02 when you started experimenting in your kitchen? 00:15:20.05\00:15:22.68 Oh, wow. That's a big thing. 00:19:04.27\00:19:05.61 You know, I do a lot of work in food justice, 00:19:05.64\00:19:07.78 you know, social justice issues, 00:19:07.81\00:19:09.14 as it relates to places like you said, food access. 00:19:09.18\00:19:12.15 You have a lot of communities, 00:19:12.18\00:19:13.62 you have the inner city communities, 00:19:13.65\00:19:15.12 the urban communities, 00:19:15.15\00:19:16.48 as well as the rural communities 00:19:16.52\00:19:19.85 that don't have access to healthy options. 00:19:19.89\00:19:23.53 And so you would go, let's say 00:19:23.56\00:19:24.89 in an urban community, for example, 00:19:24.93\00:19:26.59 you'll go down a block and you might see 00:19:26.63\00:19:29.93 five miles of just liquor stores, 00:19:29.96\00:19:32.97 convenience stores, 00:19:33.00\00:19:35.07 you know, and these fast food restaurants, 00:19:35.10\00:19:37.14 you know, and this, 00:19:37.17\00:19:38.51 and it's a lot of unhealthy stuff 00:19:38.54\00:19:39.97 that's just totally not healthy for our communities. 00:19:40.01\00:19:44.28 And there's no access, 00:19:44.31\00:19:45.65 there's no grocery stores in sight. 00:19:45.68\00:19:47.02 And when you have a lot of times in these, 00:19:47.05\00:19:48.58 especially in a food desert in urban communities, 00:19:48.62\00:19:51.09 a lot of people don't drive. 00:19:51.12\00:19:52.45 So they don't have access to be able to, 00:19:52.49\00:19:54.52 you know, take a bus or a subway 00:19:54.56\00:19:56.49 if you want to call it, 00:19:56.52\00:19:57.86 you know, to a nearby grocery. 00:19:57.89\00:19:59.23 So that could be way too, that could be too much, 00:19:59.26\00:20:01.13 especially for the elderly community. 00:20:01.16\00:20:03.43 And so again, you know, a food desert is a place 00:20:03.47\00:20:05.73 within one mile there's no grocery store 00:20:05.77\00:20:09.47 and it's in access to that community. 00:20:09.50\00:20:12.21 And if there are, are grocery stores, 00:20:12.24\00:20:14.38 a lot of times the quality of the produce, 00:20:14.41\00:20:16.78 the quality of the food isn't that great. 00:20:16.81\00:20:19.21 And so, hence these communities have higher rates of disease. 00:20:19.25\00:20:23.28 There's higher levels of diabetes, 00:20:23.32\00:20:25.09 higher levels of heart disease. 00:20:25.12\00:20:26.69 Life expectancy is obviously 00:20:26.72\00:20:28.22 going to be a lot shorter in these communities. 00:20:28.26\00:20:30.19 And it's again, when you start peeling the onion, 00:20:30.23\00:20:33.36 there's a lot of systemic issues 00:20:33.40\00:20:35.16 that cause these problems 00:20:35.20\00:20:37.17 that have pretty much created 00:20:37.20\00:20:38.53 a monster in our communities 00:20:38.57\00:20:40.37 that, that people are really starting to step up to fix, 00:20:40.40\00:20:43.34 but we've got a long way to go, a long way to go. 00:20:43.37\00:20:45.77 Yes, absolutely. 00:20:45.81\00:20:47.48 You know, I've witnessed that 00:20:47.51\00:20:51.08 in certain inner city communities 00:20:51.11\00:20:53.21 where you go into grocery stores 00:20:53.25\00:20:54.92 and the produce is so old or wilted, 00:20:54.95\00:20:58.12 or, you know, just not good, 00:20:58.15\00:21:00.59 it's just, it's really appalling. 00:21:00.62\00:21:02.99 And, and yet there are liquor stores 00:21:03.02\00:21:05.46 on every corner, like you said, 00:21:05.49\00:21:06.90 so yeah, that, that has to be changed. 00:21:06.93\00:21:09.66 And I think that having products like yours 00:21:09.70\00:21:12.97 really can make a difference 00:21:13.00\00:21:14.50 because they're plant-based. 00:21:14.54\00:21:16.54 So people are going to get the fiber, 00:21:16.57\00:21:18.91 you know, from plants 00:21:18.94\00:21:20.44 through these good tasting foods. 00:21:20.48\00:21:23.18 So that's, that's really, really a blessing. 00:21:23.21\00:21:27.38 What is your company doing in terms of... 00:21:27.42\00:21:32.39 What's your vision for your company? 00:21:32.42\00:21:34.79 What are they doing in terms of jobs 00:21:34.82\00:21:37.03 and job creation and that kind of thing? 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.83 Yeah. 00:21:38.86\00:21:40.20 So as a company, you know, we all have to say our mission. 00:21:40.23\00:21:42.46 You know, we have a kind of a different couple of tiers 00:21:42.50\00:21:44.27 that we work under, but one of our major pieces is, 00:21:44.30\00:21:47.07 you know, to democratize the access of healthy foods. 00:21:47.10\00:21:50.74 So when it comes to the food deserts, 00:21:50.77\00:21:52.11 like you've mentioned earlier, we're advocating and education, 00:21:52.14\00:21:56.78 creating solutions to meet these needs. 00:21:56.81\00:21:58.58 That's one big pillar. 00:21:58.61\00:21:59.95 Job creation, 00:21:59.98\00:22:01.32 one of the biggest things you'll find, 00:22:01.35\00:22:02.68 especially within minority communities, 00:22:02.72\00:22:04.05 black and brown communities, 00:22:04.09\00:22:05.52 there's not an ownership in our communities. 00:22:05.55\00:22:07.99 And so when you think about even the food desert situation, 00:22:08.02\00:22:10.09 if there were companies that were owned by people 00:22:10.13\00:22:11.89 that look like the people in that community, 00:22:11.93\00:22:14.10 there will be a lot more care 00:22:14.13\00:22:15.56 about what they're putting out 00:22:15.60\00:22:16.93 when it comes to food choices and food solutions. 00:22:16.97\00:22:18.97 So, you know, one of the things that we're doing is, 00:22:19.00\00:22:21.27 you know, we're creating ownership. 00:22:21.30\00:22:22.64 So we have companies owned by people that look like me. 00:22:22.67\00:22:26.74 And what that comes to is that we also, 00:22:26.78\00:22:28.81 you'll find that people who look like me 00:22:28.84\00:22:30.61 are typically we would, we are more keen 00:22:30.65\00:22:32.81 to hire people from the community. 00:22:32.85\00:22:35.62 And so we have, you know, we just created in the last, 00:22:35.65\00:22:38.35 you know, year about 10 jobs through our local community. 00:22:38.39\00:22:42.16 You know, we're working with individuals 00:22:42.19\00:22:43.69 that might have a background 00:22:43.73\00:22:45.36 that some people might not want to hire those individuals, 00:22:45.39\00:22:47.56 but for us, 00:22:47.60\00:22:48.93 we want to give them a second, 00:22:48.96\00:22:50.30 give them a third, give them a fourth chance 00:22:50.33\00:22:52.13 and invest into them to be able to help them 00:22:52.17\00:22:55.04 to become what God has called them to be. 00:22:55.07\00:22:57.21 So this job creation piece is so critical. 00:22:57.24\00:22:59.57 We feel that this piece of creating jobs 00:22:59.61\00:23:02.04 and not just a job, but living wage jobs, 00:23:02.08\00:23:04.78 where they can earn a living and earn a livelihood 00:23:04.81\00:23:08.08 and learn a skill set 00:23:08.12\00:23:09.52 that can be a blessing for them for the long haul. 00:23:09.55\00:23:11.95 That's a very big piece of our business 00:23:11.99\00:23:14.92 that we're really fighting for. 00:23:14.96\00:23:16.59 Oh, I'm loving this. 00:23:16.62\00:23:18.36 I'm loving the idea that you are getting people 00:23:18.39\00:23:23.03 from within the community who needs skills, 00:23:23.06\00:23:26.53 who need to have certain marketable skills, 00:23:26.57\00:23:30.91 people who need another chance, excuse me. 00:23:30.94\00:23:34.68 And I feel like this is, 00:23:34.71\00:23:36.81 it's such an important piece of the puzzle, 00:23:36.85\00:23:40.38 but you're also educating them. 00:23:40.42\00:23:42.28 And I would imagine 00:23:42.32\00:23:43.69 that you're also including 00:23:43.72\00:23:45.45 a spiritual component in it as well. 00:23:45.49\00:23:49.32 You know, that's, that's a powerful thing 00:23:49.36\00:23:50.69 you just share. 00:23:50.73\00:23:52.06 You know, obviously I served as a pastor, 00:23:52.09\00:23:53.70 you know, for four or five years. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.06 And so, you know, what's interesting is that, 00:23:55.10\00:23:57.80 you know, when Jesus, 00:23:57.83\00:23:59.93 you know when He ministered, 00:23:59.97\00:24:01.30 you know, He met the needs of the people, 00:24:01.34\00:24:03.30 you know, as the old statement that says 00:24:03.34\00:24:04.74 Christ method alone would bring true success. 00:24:04.77\00:24:06.47 He mingled with people, He ministered to their needs. 00:24:06.51\00:24:08.88 He won their confidence. 00:24:08.91\00:24:10.35 And so, what we're doing amazingly, 00:24:10.38\00:24:12.88 as we're creating jobs, 00:24:12.91\00:24:14.25 as we're working with these individuals, 00:24:14.28\00:24:16.12 they begin to access the why, 00:24:16.15\00:24:17.79 you know, why are we doing this? 00:24:17.82\00:24:19.65 What, you know, what's your inspiration? 00:24:19.69\00:24:21.86 And, you know, this, 00:24:21.89\00:24:23.22 when you were making our products, 00:24:23.26\00:24:24.59 you know, they ask some questions, 00:24:24.63\00:24:25.96 we bring up conversations about the Lord. 00:24:25.99\00:24:28.16 They, you know, we, you know, when sometimes a young man 00:24:28.20\00:24:30.80 might be going through something personal 00:24:30.83\00:24:32.17 and I'm like, 00:24:32.20\00:24:33.54 "Hey, let's pray, man. 00:24:33.57\00:24:34.90 Let's, just say a prayer about this." 00:24:34.94\00:24:36.27 And so it becomes a way where it's organically, 00:24:36.30\00:24:39.44 we're creating a relationship. 00:24:39.47\00:24:41.54 It is not a big, you know, we're not doing a big seminar. 00:24:41.58\00:24:44.18 We're just living in our community, 00:24:44.21\00:24:46.11 being a citizen in our local community 00:24:46.15\00:24:48.25 and loving on people. 00:24:48.28\00:24:49.68 And that relationship turns into a friendship, 00:24:49.72\00:24:52.45 that friendship turns into, 00:24:52.49\00:24:54.49 why do you do what you do? 00:24:54.52\00:24:56.06 Why do you, you know, go to church? 00:24:56.09\00:24:57.83 You know, then it's like, okay, I go to church on Saturday. 00:24:57.86\00:24:59.96 Well, why do you go to church on Saturday? 00:25:00.00\00:25:01.36 You know, it is, it's an organic 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.17 way of ministering, you know, in our communities. 00:25:04.20\00:25:07.14 It's about creating jobs, loving on people. 00:25:07.17\00:25:09.30 And God does, so He does the work. 00:25:09.34\00:25:11.17 He does.
