Nothing is better than service and love together. 00:00:01.36\00:00:04.13 Stay tuned to meet the president of a ministry 00:00:04.17\00:00:06.40 that embodies that very principle. 00:00:06.43\00:00:09.00 My name is Jason Bradley, 00:00:09.04\00:00:10.54 and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:10.57\00:00:13.34 Hello, and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:34.70\00:00:36.80 My guest today is Eric Camarillo, 00:00:36.83\00:00:38.93 President of SALT Outreach Ministries. 00:00:38.97\00:00:41.90 Welcome to Urban Report, Eric. 00:00:41.94\00:00:43.71 Yeah. Thanks for having me, man. 00:00:43.74\00:00:45.41 I'm excited to be back here. 00:00:45.44\00:00:46.78 Yes, absolutely, 00:00:46.81\00:00:48.14 because you're clearly no stranger. 00:00:48.18\00:00:49.51 Not a stranger. 00:00:49.54\00:00:50.88 Yeah to 3ABN or Dare to Dream. 00:00:50.91\00:00:52.25 Yeah, yeah. Yes, Yes, absolutely. 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.58 Why don't you give us like a little glimpse into 00:00:54.62\00:00:57.42 what SALT is all about and how it got started? 00:00:57.45\00:01:00.66 Yeah, so SALT is an acronym for service 00:01:00.69\00:01:03.02 and love together. 00:01:03.06\00:01:04.89 It's a we, right now we run 00:01:04.93\00:01:06.59 a homeless day service center for the unsheltered. 00:01:06.63\00:01:12.07 Okay. 00:01:12.10\00:01:13.44 And so, we currently offer 00:01:13.47\00:01:17.34 showers through a shower trailer, 00:01:17.37\00:01:19.21 laundry services, storage services, 00:01:19.24\00:01:22.34 haircuts. 00:01:22.38\00:01:24.05 I mean, you name it those, any basic service we provide. 00:01:24.08\00:01:29.15 And we have a case management, kind of like an evangelistic 00:01:29.18\00:01:32.19 component attached with that as well. 00:01:32.22\00:01:33.59 Wow. 00:01:33.62\00:01:34.96 We started back in 2011, as just kind of 00:01:34.99\00:01:39.43 the reason was to gather our churches together, 00:01:39.46\00:01:43.30 combined resources to really make a difference 00:01:43.33\00:01:45.33 in the community, a measurable difference, 00:01:45.37\00:01:46.87 measurable impact. 00:01:46.90\00:01:48.94 And so it started as a young adult 00:01:48.97\00:01:50.87 led organization and it still is the young adult 00:01:50.91\00:01:53.31 led organization. 00:01:53.34\00:01:55.11 So you come on campus, you'll see a bunch 00:01:55.14\00:01:56.91 of young adults running around, you know, 00:01:56.95\00:01:58.71 helping to meet the needs of the young sheltered there, 00:01:58.75\00:02:01.08 but you get people of all ages of course involved. 00:02:01.12\00:02:03.12 But yeah, it's been a huge blessing. 00:02:03.15\00:02:05.45 Indeed, indeed. 00:02:05.49\00:02:06.82 How old were you when you started SALT? 00:02:06.86\00:02:08.86 Yeah, I was. 00:02:08.89\00:02:10.23 I was about 23 years old when I started. 00:02:10.26\00:02:12.19 Yeah. Wow. 00:02:12.23\00:02:13.56 Wow, 23? 00:02:13.60\00:02:14.93 How did you recognize 00:02:14.96\00:02:16.30 the calling that God was placing on your life? 00:02:16.33\00:02:19.17 You know, it's actually a crazy story. 00:02:19.20\00:02:22.77 And I don't know if I've ever shared it. 00:02:22.80\00:02:25.37 Well, we've got time. 00:02:25.41\00:02:26.74 You got time? 00:02:26.78\00:02:28.11 Okay, I'll share it. 00:02:28.14\00:02:29.48 So I remember I had just quit my job for the Sabbath, 00:02:29.51\00:02:32.28 which is a whole another story. 00:02:32.31\00:02:34.32 You know, they were making me work on the Sabbath, 00:02:34.35\00:02:35.95 I quit that job. 00:02:35.98\00:02:37.32 And I spent about a six month period really just 00:02:37.35\00:02:39.65 spending time with God and asking him, 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.02 "What is it that you want me to do?" 00:02:42.06\00:02:43.43 But not just asking, actually doing certain things 00:02:43.46\00:02:45.76 I was, I was exploring and doing different 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.90 outreach projects. 00:02:47.93\00:02:49.26 And one of those was actually doing, 00:02:49.30\00:02:52.70 going out in at night 00:02:52.73\00:02:54.34 to where all the clubs are in Downtown 00:02:54.37\00:02:55.70 Orlando with some friends of mine. 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.51 We talk to people, create quick relationships 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.87 and ask people if they want prayer. 00:02:59.91\00:03:01.88 And so when at the end of that night, 00:03:01.91\00:03:03.71 it was about three in the morning. 00:03:03.75\00:03:05.95 There was a homeless woman that was sitting on, 00:03:05.98\00:03:07.95 on the step. 00:03:07.98\00:03:09.32 And she was just talking about how God's been good to her 00:03:09.35\00:03:12.55 and all that stuff. 00:03:12.59\00:03:13.92 Now prior to this, 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.29 before we even started this outreach, 00:03:15.32\00:03:16.66 the four of us were in, in a car. 00:03:16.69\00:03:19.09 I believe it was my car at the time. 00:03:19.13\00:03:20.66 We're all asking God to confirm to us, 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.60 what it is He wants to do with our life? 00:03:22.63\00:03:24.83 I say, "God, I think You're calling me 00:03:24.87\00:03:26.20 to be a pastor." 00:03:26.23\00:03:27.77 My other friend said, 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.14 "I think You're calling me to be missionary." 00:03:29.17\00:03:30.51 Other friends said, "I think You're calling me 00:03:30.54\00:03:31.87 to be a missionary in Africa." 00:03:31.91\00:03:33.24 And other friends said, "Evangelist," right? 00:03:33.27\00:03:34.64 So we're all just praying, 00:03:34.68\00:03:36.34 right before we went out to do this outreach, 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.45 and asking God to confirm it. 00:03:38.48\00:03:40.08 So you know, fast forward again, 00:03:40.12\00:03:41.78 to the end of the outreach, 00:03:41.82\00:03:43.15 this homeless woman's on the step 00:03:43.18\00:03:44.52 talking about how God's been good to her. 00:03:44.55\00:03:46.19 All four of us are just kind of there 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.92 sitting with her just listening. 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.42 And all of a sudden she stops. 00:03:49.46\00:03:51.93 And she says, she says, "Give me your hand." 00:03:51.96\00:03:55.86 So I was like, "Okay, you know, here's my hand. 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.43 I don't know what you wanted to do." 00:03:58.47\00:03:59.93 My other friend gave his hand. 00:03:59.97\00:04:01.60 She kissed the back of our hands 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.24 and she, she was kind of like hunched over 00:04:03.27\00:04:04.97 and she stood up straight. 00:04:05.01\00:04:06.81 She pointed at me and said, 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.51 "You're called to be a pastor in the States. 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.88 You are called to being a missionary in Africa. 00:04:10.91\00:04:13.01 You're called to be a missionary in Africa. 00:04:13.05\00:04:14.42 You're called to being an evangelist." 00:04:14.45\00:04:16.32 Everything we asked for God confirmation, 00:04:16.35\00:04:18.92 for confirmation where she confirmed it. 00:04:18.95\00:04:20.79 And after that, she just went back to normal. 00:04:20.82\00:04:24.46 And we were shocked, we were stunned. 00:04:24.49\00:04:26.56 And I remember after that night, 00:04:26.59\00:04:29.20 I mean, you know, it was so unbelievable. 00:04:29.23\00:04:31.23 I had asked my friends, "Hey, did this really happen 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.27 like every three months or six months?" 00:04:33.30\00:04:34.74 Yeah. 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.10 Because it was just so crazy, but, but God confirmed that 00:04:36.14\00:04:39.14 there was a calling on my life for something. 00:04:39.17\00:04:41.64 And I didn't know what it was but, 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.65 but about a month later, 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.81 is when SALT started. 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.18 So it was a, it was really just a crazy experience. 00:04:47.22\00:04:51.15 But yeah, it was, it was a blessing. 00:04:51.19\00:04:52.75 Yeah, that's incredible. 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.82 Walk me through the progression of SALT. 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.73 So you needed a... 00:04:57.76\00:04:59.73 What a change trailer, was that the first thing, 00:04:59.76\00:05:02.63 that you needed? 00:05:02.66\00:05:04.00 So we started with two, two women 00:05:04.03\00:05:05.93 that fed about 15 people. 00:05:05.97\00:05:09.04 It grew to after a few years that was in 2012, 00:05:09.07\00:05:11.84 grew after a few years for hundreds of people feeding 00:05:11.87\00:05:14.34 hundreds of people. 00:05:14.38\00:05:15.74 And in 2016, biweekly, 00:05:15.78\00:05:17.48 2016, we fundraise for a clothing trailer, 00:05:17.51\00:05:20.82 which we call "Change." 00:05:20.85\00:05:22.18 It offered clothing and hygiene product. 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.09 So not only were we doing food, 00:05:24.12\00:05:25.45 we're also doing clothing and hygiene product, 00:05:25.49\00:05:27.89 contained to do surveys, 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.42 realize showers was a huge need. 00:05:29.46\00:05:31.69 So then we fundraise 40,000 which, 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.90 which by the way, half of it was funded from viewers 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.33 from Urban Report and 3ABN. 00:05:37.37\00:05:39.63 Praise God. 00:05:39.67\00:05:41.00 And so we fundraise about 40,000 for a shower trailer, 00:05:41.04\00:05:43.61 provide showers to them. 00:05:43.64\00:05:45.54 Some of them hadn't showered in three months, 00:05:45.57\00:05:47.14 and they were looking for work. 00:05:47.18\00:05:48.51 You said you did surveys. 00:05:48.54\00:05:49.88 So who did you survey? 00:05:49.91\00:05:51.88 We surveyed the, the people experiencing homelessness. 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.82 Yeah, we asked them. 00:05:54.85\00:05:56.48 I, you know, I believe a lot of times 00:05:56.52\00:05:59.82 we assume what someone as homeless needs, 00:05:59.85\00:06:02.52 we just assume what their need is. 00:06:02.56\00:06:04.79 And we don't know their name, you know? 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.70 And I think it's important for us to be able to ask them, 00:06:06.73\00:06:09.93 you know, have focus groups, do surveys. 00:06:09.96\00:06:12.40 I believe any ministry, any kind of outreach ministry 00:06:12.43\00:06:15.30 needs to start with asking the people, 00:06:15.34\00:06:17.81 what is it that you actually need? 00:06:17.84\00:06:20.11 Otherwise, we're just guessing. 00:06:20.14\00:06:22.21 Yes. 00:06:22.24\00:06:23.58 So you were implementing Christ's 00:06:23.61\00:06:24.95 method of evangelism? 00:06:24.98\00:06:26.31 Amen. Yeah. 00:06:26.35\00:06:27.68 Yes. Yeah, I believe so. 00:06:27.72\00:06:29.05 And that's what inspired us. Yeah. 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.42 So this is a very, like hands on 00:06:30.45\00:06:33.56 up close and personal ministry. 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.96 How were you affected in 2020 with COVID-19? 00:06:35.99\00:06:40.33 Yeah, that's a good question. 00:06:40.36\00:06:41.70 So, you know, we had our shower trailer, 00:06:41.73\00:06:43.57 we had a clothing trailer. 00:06:43.60\00:06:44.93 So all together, we're offering showers, clothing, 00:06:44.97\00:06:47.64 hygiene, product, food, and haircuts. 00:06:47.67\00:06:52.01 And so 2020 came, we wanted to operate 00:06:52.04\00:06:55.51 on a weekly basis now, 00:06:55.54\00:06:56.98 because we're only operating once or twice a month. 00:06:57.01\00:06:59.15 So in 2020, came, we hired two part time people 00:06:59.18\00:07:01.65 to operate weekly. 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.08 COVID hit a month later, about March of 2020. 00:07:03.12\00:07:06.45 And we were debating 00:07:06.49\00:07:08.16 as to whether we should continue or not, 00:07:08.19\00:07:11.03 because all the other organizations 00:07:11.06\00:07:12.63 serving the unsheltered at that time 00:07:12.66\00:07:14.50 had shut down. 00:07:14.53\00:07:15.86 Either they weren't taking walk-ins, 00:07:15.90\00:07:17.43 no one could go into the shelters. 00:07:17.47\00:07:19.23 The food shares where they feed 00:07:19.27\00:07:20.94 hundreds of people they stopped, 00:07:20.97\00:07:22.60 so that people experiencing homelessness 00:07:22.64\00:07:24.24 were really left in kind of like a hole, 00:07:24.27\00:07:26.11 left alone. 00:07:26.14\00:07:27.48 So we decided, you know, to just 00:07:27.51\00:07:30.68 and I believe God is the one 00:07:30.71\00:07:32.31 that inspired us to do this to continue operating 00:07:32.35\00:07:34.15 because we're an outside operation. 00:07:34.18\00:07:35.62 We're the safest possible way to provide services 00:07:35.65\00:07:38.75 and the city of Orlando actually back that up. 00:07:38.79\00:07:41.39 And instead of operating once a week, 00:07:41.42\00:07:43.02 we ended up moving to three days a week in 2020. 00:07:43.06\00:07:46.96 Wow. 00:07:47.00\00:07:48.40 So what other services did you add to the mix? 00:07:48.43\00:07:53.10 Yeah, so in about September of 2020, 00:07:53.13\00:07:57.87 we started operating four days a week. 00:07:57.91\00:08:00.18 And then in January of 2021, we added a case management. 00:08:00.21\00:08:05.15 And that case management program 00:08:05.18\00:08:07.38 has been a huge blessing. 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.58 About 50% of the people they saw 00:08:09.62\00:08:12.25 on that first two months, they helped 00:08:12.29\00:08:14.89 take the next step toward ending their homelessness. 00:08:14.92\00:08:17.69 And they were actually able to directly house 00:08:17.73\00:08:20.53 11% of the people they saw, through our, 00:08:20.56\00:08:23.80 through the resources from SALT and through their efforts. 00:08:23.83\00:08:27.07 So that's been a huge blessing. 00:08:27.10\00:08:28.67 We also add a laundry trailer. Nice. 00:08:28.70\00:08:30.61 So yeah, we actually have that as well, 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.98 something you know, we'll show later. 00:08:34.01\00:08:36.44 But our case management program has really been a key, 00:08:36.48\00:08:40.92 an integral part to helping the organization 00:08:40.95\00:08:43.39 grow and to be able to really drive impact 00:08:43.42\00:08:46.76 among the people experiencing homelessness. 00:08:46.79\00:08:48.46 I actually have a picture of our two case managers 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.99 that are running that program. 00:08:51.03\00:08:52.49 One of them is a licensed clinical social worker, 00:08:52.53\00:08:54.53 Renee, she's on the right. 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.06 And on the left is Leslie, 00:08:56.10\00:08:58.33 she's our master's level social worker. 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.94 And together along with six social work interns 00:09:00.97\00:09:04.21 in the spring semester of 2021, 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.24 they were able to, to drive those metrics 00:09:07.28\00:09:09.81 that I just mentioned to you. 00:09:09.84\00:09:11.61 So that was a huge blessing. 00:09:11.65\00:09:12.98 And then the laundry trailer was also huge, 00:09:13.01\00:09:14.55 and, and I have some pictures of that as well. 00:09:14.58\00:09:17.69 We actually launched that April 15 of 2021. 00:09:17.72\00:09:20.79 You can see here that's a picture of some of our team, 00:09:20.82\00:09:22.92 that's some of our interns or security guard, 00:09:22.96\00:09:24.86 our staff members, 00:09:24.89\00:09:26.70 volunteers. 00:09:26.73\00:09:28.56 So that's them there. 00:09:28.60\00:09:29.93 And then the next picture 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.90 is actually a picture of the, 00:09:31.93\00:09:35.20 the mayor making a proclamation. 00:09:35.24\00:09:37.41 So there was actually a ribbon cutting that day 00:09:37.44\00:09:39.87 where the mayor of Orlando came out, 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.41 and, and cut a ribbon with us. 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.55 And he, not only him, 00:09:45.58\00:09:47.18 but other high profile people in the city 00:09:47.22\00:09:49.25 and the commissioners all came together 00:09:49.28\00:09:51.65 to, to recognize what SALT is doing for the community 00:09:51.69\00:09:54.92 and what God is doing through SALT, 00:09:54.96\00:09:56.49 through SALT in that community. 00:09:56.52\00:09:57.86 But also, He made a proclamation 00:09:57.89\00:09:59.66 that every April 15 be SALT day 00:09:59.69\00:10:02.06 or service and love together day 00:10:02.10\00:10:04.83 in the city of Orlando. 00:10:04.87\00:10:06.20 Every April 15? 00:10:06.23\00:10:07.57 April 15, yeah. 00:10:07.60\00:10:08.94 April 15 is SALT day in the City of Orlando. 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.81 That's right. Yeah, it is. 00:10:10.84\00:10:12.54 Look, I might have to take a trip 00:10:12.57\00:10:14.14 to Orlando just on April 15. 00:10:14.18\00:10:17.15 Yeah, yeah. And come check it out. 00:10:17.18\00:10:18.51 Come and enjoy SALT day with us. 00:10:18.55\00:10:19.88 Hopefully you don't get any high blood pressure coming in. 00:10:19.91\00:10:22.45 But, but yeah, no, it'll be great. 00:10:22.48\00:10:24.39 We actually have a news story 00:10:24.42\00:10:25.82 that came out that from that day, too, 00:10:25.85\00:10:27.19 I'd like to share. Oh, yeah. 00:10:27.22\00:10:28.56 Well, let's go ahead and watch that right now. 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.36 Yeah. 00:10:30.39\00:10:31.73 Welcome back. 00:10:31.76\00:10:33.09 You might not have known today's actually 00:10:33.13\00:10:34.46 National Laundry Day, I'm guessing most 00:10:34.50\00:10:36.00 probably didn't find a reason to celebrate. 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.33 Yeah, I had no idea but the City of Orlando 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.44 is celebrating by launching a new first of its kind 00:10:40.47\00:10:43.54 mobile laundry service for the homeless. 00:10:43.57\00:10:46.17 Fox 35's Amanda McKenzie shows us. 00:10:46.21\00:10:49.44 For many people living on the streets, 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.45 finding a place to shower, wash clothes 00:10:51.48\00:10:53.75 and other basic amenities is hard to come by. 00:10:53.78\00:10:56.55 Now there is a new mobile laundry service 00:10:56.58\00:10:58.99 with six commercial washers and dryers 00:10:59.02\00:11:01.36 all free to use for anyone experiencing homelessness. 00:11:01.39\00:11:05.33 This laundry trailer is a new addition 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.40 to other free services 00:11:07.43\00:11:08.80 like a portable shower trailer with space for haircuts. 00:11:08.83\00:11:11.97 You think about it, taking your shower 00:11:12.00\00:11:13.84 if you don't have clean clothing 00:11:13.87\00:11:15.77 to put on after 00:11:15.80\00:11:17.14 you do that certainly just didn't make good, 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.01 good hygiene sense. 00:11:19.04\00:11:20.48 The city is partnering with the organization SALT, 00:11:20.51\00:11:23.31 which stands for service and love together, 00:11:23.35\00:11:26.05 as well as simply healthcare 00:11:26.08\00:11:27.55 to bring this trailer to shelters four days a week. 00:11:27.58\00:11:30.49 Officials estimate they will be able to complete 00:11:30.52\00:11:32.69 up to 240 loads of laundry per week. 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.99 It's all part of the city's efforts 00:11:36.02\00:11:37.46 to ensure every resident has their basic needs 00:11:37.49\00:11:40.26 of clothing, food and hygiene met. 00:11:40.30\00:11:43.13 As we work 00:11:43.16\00:11:44.53 and try to find ways to end homelessness. 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.90 We know 00:11:47.94\00:11:49.87 that we have to do something in the interim. 00:11:49.90\00:11:54.48 To make sure that our homeless residents 00:11:54.51\00:11:59.05 here in the city of Orlando 00:11:59.08\00:12:01.85 know that they are not forgotten. 00:12:01.88\00:12:05.82 We want to let them know that we don't just pass by 00:12:05.85\00:12:10.53 and see a shadow. 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.36 We see them. 00:12:13.40\00:12:16.30 Well, most people see laundry as a chore. 00:12:16.33\00:12:18.43 Today on National Laundry Day, there is reason to celebrate 00:12:18.47\00:12:21.84 this new amenity in the city that will help our neighbors 00:12:21.87\00:12:24.84 without a home have one less thing to worry about. 00:12:24.87\00:12:28.18 In Orlando, Amanda Mackenzie Fox 35 News. 00:12:28.21\00:12:32.81 Wow, that's incredible. 00:12:32.85\00:12:34.78 What do you want to add to that? 00:12:34.82\00:12:36.15 Yeah, so, you know, 00:12:36.18\00:12:37.75 partnership with the city of Orlando has been 00:12:37.79\00:12:39.75 really great for the organization. 00:12:39.79\00:12:42.59 I mean, we're actually gonna be operating six days a week 00:12:42.62\00:12:46.33 starting June 15th of 2021. 00:12:46.36\00:12:50.23 And that, that, that time, 00:12:50.27\00:12:53.23 we're gonna be operating, yeah about eight hours a day, 00:12:53.27\00:12:55.44 six days a week as opposed to three or four days a week, 00:12:55.47\00:12:57.97 which is gonna be huge. 00:12:58.01\00:13:00.11 But in 2020, just with the, just with the partnership 00:13:00.14\00:13:02.88 operating three or four days a week, 00:13:02.91\00:13:04.31 just to kind of give you an idea 00:13:04.35\00:13:05.68 of what we've been able to do with God's help 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.42 is we've been able to serve about 1500 unique individuals, 00:13:08.45\00:13:13.42 unduplicated persons with 30,000 units of service. 00:13:13.46\00:13:16.73 So about 10,000... 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.63 8000 of those units were showers. 00:13:18.66\00:13:21.06 Okay. Direct showers. 00:13:21.10\00:13:22.60 And so we found that 30% of the people we served, 00:13:22.63\00:13:26.80 so that's about 450 people 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.94 took the next step to end their homelessness 00:13:28.97\00:13:31.14 after services with us through a coordinated community effort. 00:13:31.17\00:13:34.31 And 17% took the next step to end their... 00:13:34.34\00:13:37.61 I'm sorry, 17% transition to shelter or housing, 00:13:37.65\00:13:41.35 after services with us through a coordinated effort as well. 00:13:41.38\00:13:44.02 So it shows 00:13:44.05\00:13:46.29 and it validates that these services are needed. 00:13:46.32\00:13:49.92 And that's why the city is continuing 00:13:49.96\00:13:51.83 to support this initiative. 00:13:51.86\00:13:53.36 And not just the city, other businesses, 00:13:53.40\00:13:55.93 other organizations, 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.30 donors have been giving so much. 00:13:57.33\00:13:59.40 In 2020 a lot of nonprofits hit, 00:13:59.43\00:14:02.64 you know, we're, we're struggling with donations 00:14:02.67\00:14:05.17 and donor, you know, just from individuals. 00:14:05.21\00:14:07.78 But our donations ended up doubling during that time 00:14:07.81\00:14:10.11 because they saw the value of what SALT was doing 00:14:10.15\00:14:12.78 during the pandemic for the unsheltered. 00:14:12.81\00:14:15.32 I mean, unfortunately, 00:14:15.35\00:14:17.02 last year, one in five people that we saw 00:14:17.05\00:14:19.29 were new to homelessness. 00:14:19.32\00:14:20.66 Wow. 00:14:20.69\00:14:22.02 Because and most, a lot of them it was because of COVID-19. 00:14:22.06\00:14:26.23 And we're seeing that trend continue 00:14:26.26\00:14:27.96 just, just this first quarter of 2021. 00:14:28.00\00:14:30.80 About 17% of, 17% or 18% of the people we served 00:14:30.83\00:14:35.37 were new to homelessness, 00:14:35.40\00:14:37.11 to first time being homeless. 00:14:37.14\00:14:38.47 I can tell you stories, man, it's, it's, it's tough. 00:14:38.51\00:14:41.04 Yeah. 00:14:41.08\00:14:42.41 Yeah, I can't imagine what that must be like, 00:14:42.44\00:14:44.11 you know, one minute you're in a house 00:14:44.15\00:14:46.41 or an apartment or something along those lines 00:14:46.45\00:14:49.38 and the next minute, you're on the street. 00:14:49.42\00:14:51.15 But I know that they're happy to see SALT in the community, 00:14:51.19\00:14:53.76 because you're making a difference. 00:14:53.79\00:14:55.59 Yeah, praise God, man. Yes. 00:14:55.62\00:14:56.96 Yeah. Yes. 00:14:56.99\00:14:58.33 How has starting SALT 00:14:58.36\00:15:00.56 and seeing the growth that God has brought about, 00:15:00.60\00:15:04.33 how has that strengthened your faith? 00:15:04.37\00:15:07.40 Yeah. 00:15:07.44\00:15:09.57 You know, that there's a Bible verse that says, 00:15:09.60\00:15:12.17 "That God will answer our prayers above, 00:15:12.21\00:15:16.08 above what we ask or what we even think." 00:15:16.11\00:15:18.45 Right? 00:15:18.48\00:15:19.81 And, and, you know, we thought, 00:15:19.85\00:15:22.18 we dreamed of us eventually growing to this point, 00:15:22.22\00:15:26.76 you know, to be, not, not just for the sake of growth, 00:15:26.79\00:15:29.66 but because we know, as we grow, 00:15:29.69\00:15:31.26 we can deliver a much higher impact, 00:15:31.29\00:15:33.80 you know, with the people that we're serving. 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.63 But we didn't think it would happen so soon. 00:15:35.66\00:15:38.00 I mean, within a year, 00:15:38.03\00:15:39.57 we entered 2020, 00:15:39.60\00:15:40.94 as an all volunteer organization. 00:15:40.97\00:15:42.64 And at this moment, right now, we have like 13 employees, 00:15:42.67\00:15:46.74 and a total of 30 team members 00:15:46.78\00:15:49.04 that are helping to make all of these run. 00:15:49.08\00:15:52.21 And we're about to hire five more people right now 00:15:52.25\00:15:54.75 to operate six days a week. 00:15:54.78\00:15:56.12 It's, it's really mind blowing, 00:15:56.15\00:15:58.42 you know, it is and, and God just continues 00:15:58.45\00:16:01.69 to just kind of answer... 00:16:01.72\00:16:04.19 There was, let me give you an example. 00:16:04.23\00:16:06.03 Okay, of how, how intricately 00:16:06.06\00:16:08.40 and how involved God is with this ministry. 00:16:08.43\00:16:10.87 So just on the fundraising side, 00:16:10.90\00:16:13.67 just talking the fundraising side, 00:16:13.70\00:16:15.47 I know that we were needing to raise 00:16:15.50\00:16:18.87 an additional about 50,000 00:16:18.91\00:16:21.68 for the case management program. 00:16:21.71\00:16:23.28 I remember being kind of stressed out about it, 00:16:23.31\00:16:25.05 you know, and I was going to God, 00:16:25.08\00:16:26.95 "God, I don't know what we're going to do, 00:16:26.98\00:16:28.32 we launched this program in faith, 00:16:28.35\00:16:30.19 and because we know it's needed, 00:16:30.22\00:16:32.55 but we need Your help to help fund this thing." 00:16:32.59\00:16:35.72 And so, at that moment, we need a 50,000, 00:16:35.76\00:16:38.79 I got a phone call from an acquaintance of mine, 00:16:38.83\00:16:41.50 just kind of asking, "Hey, tell me a little bit about 00:16:41.53\00:16:44.53 how things are going and all that" 00:16:44.57\00:16:46.84 and, and I told him, he's like, 00:16:46.87\00:16:48.20 "What are your needs right now?" 00:16:48.24\00:16:49.57 I'm like, "Well, you know, one of our biggest needs 00:16:49.60\00:16:51.04 is our case management program. 00:16:51.07\00:16:52.41 We need at least 50,000 right now 00:16:52.44\00:16:54.61 to keep things kind of going and moving 00:16:54.64\00:16:56.88 because it's been, it's been really well 00:16:56.91\00:16:58.88 working really well." 00:16:58.91\00:17:00.28 He's like, "Okay, I'll get a check 00:17:00.32\00:17:01.78 for 50,000 out to you by Tuesday." 00:17:01.82\00:17:04.15 I said, I said, "What?" Wow! 00:17:04.19\00:17:06.05 Yeah, that was just straight up. 00:17:06.09\00:17:08.06 So answered the prayer. 00:17:08.09\00:17:09.42 It couldn't be anyone, anything else. 00:17:09.46\00:17:11.06 And He was God answering that prayer. 00:17:11.09\00:17:14.53 And so, you know, it's been, it's been a huge 00:17:14.56\00:17:20.27 blessing for, for myself and for our team 00:17:20.30\00:17:24.17 to experience God in such an, in such an intimate way 00:17:24.21\00:17:29.01 through ministry. 00:17:29.04\00:17:30.78 And obviously, with our clients, 00:17:30.81\00:17:32.15 there are countless testimonies of, 00:17:32.18\00:17:33.78 of God using our team to really help someone get employment, 00:17:33.82\00:17:38.35 to eventually get a home, or to help someone 00:17:38.39\00:17:41.56 you know, someone get baptized or, 00:17:41.59\00:17:43.63 or learn or accept Christ. 00:17:43.66\00:17:45.46 You know, there's, there's so much it's, 00:17:45.49\00:17:47.63 it's been, it's been huge, man. 00:17:47.66\00:17:49.36 Yeah. 00:17:49.40\00:17:50.73 What's some of the feedback that you receive 00:17:50.77\00:17:53.13 from individuals that are homeless? 00:17:53.17\00:17:57.01 You know, I think, the most common thing 00:17:57.04\00:18:00.48 that we get which, which we love to hear, 00:18:00.51\00:18:04.15 and it's confirmation from God that I believed 00:18:04.18\00:18:06.98 that we're going in the right direction is, 00:18:07.02\00:18:10.49 you know, constantly we hear that 00:18:10.52\00:18:13.52 the one thing that people love about our organization, 00:18:13.56\00:18:16.52 why they keep coming back for services. 00:18:16.56\00:18:19.43 And you know, obviously they need the services but 00:18:19.46\00:18:22.03 they, they love coming back 00:18:22.06\00:18:23.57 because they say that they know that we care, 00:18:23.60\00:18:25.60 like they know that we actually care about them. 00:18:25.63\00:18:27.97 This isn't actually a job. 00:18:28.00\00:18:29.54 You know, they witnessed us going from just feeding them 00:18:29.57\00:18:32.97 with just a little, little food that we had to then asking, 00:18:33.01\00:18:36.34 okay, what do you need? 00:18:36.38\00:18:37.71 Clothing. Okay, clothing trailer pops up. 00:18:37.75\00:18:39.15 What do you need? 00:18:39.18\00:18:40.52 Showers. 00:18:40.55\00:18:41.88 Okay, shower trailer pops up, or what do you need? 00:18:41.92\00:18:43.25 Laundry. 00:18:43.28\00:18:44.62 Laundry trailer pops up. 00:18:44.65\00:18:45.99 Case management pops up to help get them into housing. 00:18:46.02\00:18:48.76 You know, pastoral, we brought on an outreach pastor 00:18:48.79\00:18:53.56 that was brought on to help meet the spiritual need, 00:18:53.60\00:18:55.53 because they couldn't go into the church anymore 00:18:55.56\00:18:57.13 with COVID-19. 00:18:57.17\00:18:58.50 So they were, they were missing out on church, 00:18:58.53\00:19:00.24 they didn't have any kind of a spiritual environment 00:19:00.27\00:19:03.97 anymore, no fellowship. 00:19:04.01\00:19:05.41 And so, with our, with our evangelism department, 00:19:05.44\00:19:08.78 we're able to kind of provide church to them. 00:19:08.81\00:19:11.58 Our outreach pastor does service for them 00:19:11.61\00:19:13.55 twice, twice a month. Okay. 00:19:13.58\00:19:15.08 And he's starting a weekly Bible study with them. 00:19:15.12\00:19:17.22 And the, the main thing that he's doing, his main job 00:19:17.25\00:19:20.76 is to really just create relationships with them. 00:19:20.79\00:19:23.63 And so that's what he's doing. 00:19:23.66\00:19:25.09 He's creating those relationships. 00:19:25.13\00:19:26.49 He's spent two or three months doing that, 00:19:26.53\00:19:28.73 and now 00:19:28.76\00:19:30.10 he's gonna be starting that weekly Bible study now, 00:19:30.13\00:19:32.60 and inviting those friends that he's made to that study. 00:19:32.63\00:19:35.60 That's huge. That's huge. 00:19:35.64\00:19:37.17 Yeah. 00:19:37.21\00:19:38.54 I remember there was one time I was doing 00:19:38.57\00:19:41.44 3ABN Today program with you. 00:19:41.48\00:19:43.78 And you mentioned, you spoke about this pastor, 00:19:43.81\00:19:46.31 and you said that he even cleans the toilets. 00:19:46.35\00:19:49.58 He cleans the showers. 00:19:49.62\00:19:51.85 How did that speak to the homeless community? 00:19:51.89\00:19:55.52 Yeah, yeah. 00:19:55.56\00:19:56.89 So a lot of, and he'll tell you himself, 00:19:56.93\00:20:00.73 majority of the people experiencing homelessness 00:20:00.76\00:20:02.76 have had some type of spiritual community in the past, 00:20:02.80\00:20:06.53 have, have, have maybe been burned by the church 00:20:06.57\00:20:10.71 and, and they have what nothing to do with God, 00:20:10.74\00:20:14.34 you know, some of them. 00:20:14.38\00:20:15.71 And so when they see a pastor, 00:20:15.74\00:20:18.71 and they call him their pastor. 00:20:18.75\00:20:20.52 He's the pastor for the unsheltered 00:20:20.55\00:20:22.28 there in Orlando, you know. 00:20:22.32\00:20:23.65 Yes, yes. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.02 And so they see him cleaning the toilet 00:20:25.05\00:20:26.96 after they just use it, 00:20:26.99\00:20:28.32 you know, they see him wiping down the shower 00:20:28.36\00:20:30.63 after they just took a shower and sanitizing. 00:20:30.66\00:20:33.19 They see him, he's there helping them 00:20:33.23\00:20:35.36 get their laundry done, 00:20:35.40\00:20:36.73 helping them get registered for services. 00:20:36.77\00:20:38.27 He's working in the midst of our outreach services. 00:20:38.30\00:20:41.10 But he's earning their respect. 00:20:41.14\00:20:43.10 He's built, he's building trust. 00:20:43.14\00:20:44.91 And, and he's, and at the same time, 00:20:44.94\00:20:47.94 he's creating relationships and friendships with them. 00:20:47.98\00:20:50.81 So it's, it's really been, it's really, 00:20:50.85\00:20:53.92 I think, changed their perspective 00:20:53.95\00:20:55.82 on what pastoral ministry looks like. 00:20:55.85\00:20:57.22 Yes. 00:20:57.25\00:20:58.59 A lot of people think suit, tie, desk, 00:20:58.62\00:20:59.95 preach on the pulpit, 00:20:59.99\00:21:01.32 you know that, that's how, that's how a lot of people 00:21:01.36\00:21:03.09 envision pastoral ministry. 00:21:03.12\00:21:05.09 Him as a pastor doing these things 00:21:05.13\00:21:07.70 is just a night and day difference, 00:21:07.73\00:21:09.66 you know, to show, in their perspective 00:21:09.70\00:21:12.73 of what that looks like, you know so. 00:21:12.77\00:21:14.10 Yeah. Just boots on the ground. 00:21:14.14\00:21:15.47 Boots on the ground. Yeah. 00:21:15.50\00:21:16.84 Hitting the community hard in spreading the gospel. 00:21:16.87\00:21:18.97 I love it. 00:21:19.01\00:21:20.34 Practical Christianity for sure. 00:21:20.38\00:21:23.51 Tell us a little bit about a miracle story, 00:21:23.55\00:21:26.01 because I know that 00:21:26.05\00:21:27.42 you needed an office building too. 00:21:27.45\00:21:29.15 We did. 00:21:29.18\00:21:30.52 Yeah, we did need an office building. 00:21:30.55\00:21:31.99 And we had been praying for years 00:21:32.02\00:21:34.56 and we didn't know how that would happen. 00:21:34.59\00:21:36.76 We've been envisioning it, coming up with plans and, 00:21:36.79\00:21:39.89 and just asking God, 00:21:39.93\00:21:41.26 "God, I don't know, how is it gonna happen, 00:21:41.30\00:21:42.93 we don't have the funding to get a building." 00:21:42.96\00:21:46.33 So we created a partnership 00:21:46.37\00:21:47.70 with the Christian Service Center, 00:21:47.74\00:21:49.07 that's where we're operating now. 00:21:49.10\00:21:50.44 It's called the Christian Service Center. 00:21:50.47\00:21:51.84 And, and we were the first organization 00:21:51.87\00:21:54.94 of about nine that 00:21:54.98\00:21:56.31 they're adding to their property. 00:21:56.34\00:21:57.68 All organizations catered 00:21:57.71\00:21:59.48 to helping the unsheltered population. 00:21:59.51\00:22:01.15 One organization helps with employment, 00:22:01.18\00:22:02.92 another one helps with housing, 00:22:02.95\00:22:04.52 we help with those basic services 00:22:04.55\00:22:06.25 and basic case management. 00:22:06.29\00:22:08.29 There's another organization that helps with STD screenings, 00:22:08.32\00:22:11.66 HIV screenings, stuff like that. 00:22:11.69\00:22:13.46 So we're the ones that bring traffic onto that property. 00:22:13.50\00:22:16.73 And so they were so grateful, 00:22:16.77\00:22:20.17 you know, for that partnership, 00:22:20.20\00:22:21.64 and, and for, they see the value that SALT 00:22:21.67\00:22:25.41 is bringing to their operation. 00:22:25.44\00:22:26.94 Yes, yes. 00:22:26.98\00:22:28.31 That they said, you know what, here's a building. 00:22:28.34\00:22:30.68 And so they gave us one of their buildings 00:22:30.71\00:22:33.35 to work out of. 00:22:33.38\00:22:34.95 Wow. And they're not charging us rent. 00:22:34.98\00:22:36.95 They're not charging us rent. 00:22:36.99\00:22:38.32 They just say, "Hey, pay the power." 00:22:38.35\00:22:39.69 "Okay, we'll pay the power bill," you know. 00:22:39.72\00:22:41.36 That is huge. 00:22:41.39\00:22:42.72 And so we have a conference room now, 00:22:42.76\00:22:44.09 we have a barber station, that a boy scout troop 00:22:44.13\00:22:48.23 that was trying to get to an eagle scout. 00:22:48.26\00:22:50.27 He went ahead and rebuilt that whole room 00:22:50.30\00:22:52.20 into a whole barber room. 00:22:52.23\00:22:53.80 Wow. 00:22:53.84\00:22:55.17 We have a break room. 00:22:55.20\00:22:57.31 There's a kitchen in there. 00:22:57.34\00:22:58.67 There's administrative offices, outreach office, 00:22:58.71\00:23:01.34 a case management office with a whole bunch of desks, 00:23:01.38\00:23:03.75 huge area, big storage room. 00:23:03.78\00:23:05.91 I mean, it was more again, above and beyond what we, 00:23:05.95\00:23:11.52 what we asked or even thought was possible. 00:23:11.55\00:23:13.72 Yes. Yeah, yeah. 00:23:13.76\00:23:15.52 It was a huge blessing, man. 00:23:15.56\00:23:16.89 Yeah, that is incredible. 00:23:16.93\00:23:18.69 And I know they feel like a completely different person 00:23:18.73\00:23:22.20 when they get that haircut too. 00:23:22.23\00:23:23.57 Oh, yeah, yeah. 00:23:23.60\00:23:24.93 That haircut makes a difference. 00:23:24.97\00:23:26.30 I mean, you go there, and, and they come there, 00:23:26.33\00:23:28.17 they get, they get their shower 00:23:28.20\00:23:29.54 while they're getting their shower, 00:23:29.57\00:23:30.91 their laundry is getting done. 00:23:30.94\00:23:32.27 While that's happening, they do, 00:23:32.31\00:23:34.08 you know, they, they're getting a haircut scheduled. 00:23:34.11\00:23:36.64 And I mean, it's a whole transformation process 00:23:36.68\00:23:38.65 that's happening there. 00:23:38.68\00:23:40.02 Their confidence is built, they sit with a case manager, 00:23:40.05\00:23:42.05 they create a plan together 00:23:42.08\00:23:43.52 on how to get to that next step to end their homelessness. 00:23:43.55\00:23:46.42 I mean, it's, it's a transformative process. 00:23:46.45\00:23:49.96 Amen. 00:23:49.99\00:23:51.33 And by God's grace, it's, 00:23:51.36\00:23:52.69 it's making a difference, you know. 00:23:52.73\00:23:54.06 Speaking of next steps, what's next for SALT?
