It was pre-Google. 00:03:24.30\00:03:26.94 So I didn't look them up 00:03:26.97\00:03:28.30 and really never met a real Adventist 00:03:28.34\00:03:30.77 until I met my dear friend 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.34 and coworker now Cherri Olin, 00:03:32.37\00:03:34.54 and I was about 40. 00:03:34.58\00:03:36.11 And just came into the message. 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.68 And honestly 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.05 it was the Ugandan Seventh-day Adventists 00:03:40.08\00:03:41.55 that finally got me to join the church 00:03:41.58\00:03:44.29 and become full-fledged member of the church. 00:03:44.32\00:03:47.36 And I've never looked back. 00:03:47.39\00:03:48.89 Wow. 00:03:48.92\00:03:50.43 And so FARMS STEW came about? 00:03:50.46\00:03:52.26 Yeah. 00:03:52.29\00:03:53.63 So it came about really wanting to address the disparities. 00:03:53.66\00:03:57.23 So we've been hearing a lot about COVID 00:03:57.27\00:03:59.23 and I have a picture showing 00:03:59.27\00:04:00.94 some of what we've been doing at FARM STEW in COVID. 00:04:00.97\00:04:04.04 But it came about wanting to address the disparities 00:04:04.07\00:04:06.41 between these Adventists in North America, 00:04:06.44\00:04:09.38 living to the ripe old age of mid-nineties, 00:04:09.41\00:04:12.61 to looking at our brothers and sisters 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.62 seven, nine million church members 00:04:15.65\00:04:19.62 in Sub-Saharan Africa 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.06 and their life expectancy is hovering around 60. 00:04:21.09\00:04:23.86 Wow. 00:04:23.89\00:04:25.23 And you said we have a picture of that? 00:04:25.26\00:04:26.59 We have a picture of, yes, 00:04:26.63\00:04:28.46 just the economic disparities 00:04:28.50\00:04:30.87 and really looking at the difference 00:04:30.90\00:04:32.73 you can see on here, 00:04:32.77\00:04:34.10 men on the side and women on the flat. 00:04:34.14\00:04:36.44 You can see the continent of Africa 00:04:36.47\00:04:38.47 is hovering way below in terms of life expectancy, 00:04:38.51\00:04:41.34 between 50 and 60 for most of the people. 00:04:41.38\00:04:44.41 And it really came out of that. 00:04:44.45\00:04:47.08 We've been hearing a lot about disparities 00:04:47.12\00:04:48.88 and I felt that 00:04:48.92\00:04:50.62 God is not amused 00:04:50.65\00:04:51.99 when His children, 00:04:52.02\00:04:53.39 you know, one has it really good 00:04:53.42\00:04:54.79 the other has it really not so good. 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.13 And so, it's that idea of, 00:04:57.16\00:04:58.66 could we give that extra 30 years 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.53 to our brothers and sisters in Sub-Saharan Africa? 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.83 What would they do with an extra 30 years of life? 00:05:03.87\00:05:06.57 Yes. 00:05:06.60\00:05:08.00 So let's touch on that a little bit on the problems, 00:05:08.04\00:05:12.54 because I don't think it's just one problem 00:05:12.57\00:05:14.51 that FARM STEW solves, 00:05:14.54\00:05:15.88 I think FARM STEW solves multiple problems. 00:05:15.91\00:05:18.15 So what are some of the problems 00:05:18.18\00:05:19.78 that FARM STEW addresses? 00:05:19.81\00:05:21.38 Yes. 00:05:21.42\00:05:22.75 So our recipe is designed 00:05:22.78\00:05:24.12 to address the root causes of hunger, disease and poverty. 00:05:24.15\00:05:28.56 And when you look at the difference 00:05:28.59\00:05:30.26 of life expectancy, 00:05:30.29\00:05:31.63 it's not just because adults are all dropping dead at 60. 00:05:31.66\00:05:34.73 Often it's because children are dying. 00:05:34.76\00:05:37.47 And so, we have this issue of childhood malnutrition, 00:05:37.50\00:05:40.40 and I actually brought a little baby with me 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.34 to help demonstrate the issue. 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.24 Yes, we have some props today. Yeah. 00:05:44.27\00:05:46.64 So we have, 00:05:46.68\00:05:48.01 this is what's called a mid upper arm circumference band 00:05:48.04\00:05:51.25 and it's, you know, 00:05:51.28\00:05:52.61 doctors wear their stethoscope around their neck, 00:05:52.65\00:05:54.78 but as a public health nutritionist, this is key 00:05:54.82\00:05:57.45 because it can show us 00:05:57.49\00:05:59.02 the midpoint between the shoulder and the elbow. 00:05:59.05\00:06:02.56 Looking at how big the child's arm is. 00:06:02.59\00:06:06.19 And so here's my little baby I have. 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.70 This is baby Emmanuel 00:06:08.73\00:06:10.63 and you can see this child 00:06:10.67\00:06:12.77 is about the size of a preemie, right. 00:06:12.80\00:06:14.90 It's a very, very small baby. Yes. 00:06:14.94\00:06:17.44 This band is designed to measure children 00:06:17.47\00:06:20.01 between six months and five years of age. 00:06:20.04\00:06:23.28 So you can imagine this child is tiny 00:06:23.31\00:06:26.58 compared to what a four and five-year-old 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.52 should look like, right? 00:06:28.55\00:06:30.65 But when we look at the band here 00:06:30.69\00:06:33.36 and let's see, 00:06:33.39\00:06:34.92 I do maybe need a little help, you can pull that side. 00:06:34.96\00:06:38.09 And then we're gonna show we're at about the midpoint. 00:06:38.13\00:06:40.50 If we were out in the field, we'd be measuring this, 00:06:40.53\00:06:43.00 but you can see through the window 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.43 that this child is right about in the yellow zone. 00:06:44.47\00:06:48.40 That means this child would be considered 00:06:48.44\00:06:51.24 moderately malnourished. 00:06:51.27\00:06:52.61 Wow. 00:06:52.64\00:06:53.98 And a baby that was a little bit tighter, 00:06:54.01\00:06:57.51 we wanna pull it tight in real life, 00:06:57.55\00:06:58.91 but a red zone there means severely malnourished. 00:06:58.95\00:07:01.45 Okay. 00:07:01.48\00:07:02.82 And now if we wanna address this problem, 00:07:02.85\00:07:06.59 we have to find out where the problem is. 00:07:06.62\00:07:09.26 Most of the children in our country 00:07:09.29\00:07:12.53 would score green, 00:07:12.56\00:07:14.33 almost everyone. 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.26 But in say, for example, one church in South Sudan, 00:07:16.30\00:07:19.57 a Seven-day Adventist Church in Wawa, South Sudan, 00:07:19.60\00:07:21.90 I got the data back on their children 00:07:21.94\00:07:24.44 and over 40 children were in either the yellow or red. 00:07:24.47\00:07:28.64 There was seven in the red and 33 in the yellow zone. 00:07:28.68\00:07:32.95 Wow. 00:07:32.98\00:07:34.32 So we're talking, this is a preemie child really. 00:07:34.35\00:07:37.22 And we're talking three, four, and five-year-olds 00:07:37.25\00:07:39.59 that are as thin little arms as this baby. 00:07:39.62\00:07:43.59 Wow. 00:07:43.63\00:07:44.96 And the exciting thing though, 00:07:44.99\00:07:46.73 is that where we've worked in another part of South Sudan, 00:07:46.76\00:07:49.23 where we were invited by the church to go, 00:07:49.26\00:07:51.53 and we'd been there almost two years, 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.37 we were able to move the children... 00:07:53.40\00:07:56.10 Sorry, baby. 00:07:56.14\00:07:57.77 Be gentle. 00:07:57.81\00:07:59.44 We were able to move it 00:07:59.47\00:08:00.88 so that at the start there was 59% of the children 00:08:00.91\00:08:04.48 in the yellow and red zone. 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.15 When after 18 months 00:08:06.18\00:08:07.78 there was only three, I'm sorry. 00:08:07.82\00:08:10.25 There was only 3% in this zone. 00:08:10.29\00:08:12.75 And that meant 97% were now normal 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.56 in the healthy zone. 00:08:15.59\00:08:16.93 That is beautiful. And how did it move? 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.76 Like what was done? What took place? 00:08:19.79\00:08:21.56 I'm excited about, what happened? 00:08:21.60\00:08:23.03 Yeah. 00:08:23.06\00:08:24.40 I have another picture showing our team of trainers 00:08:24.43\00:08:26.74 armed and dangerous. 00:08:26.77\00:08:28.94 Dangerous against the problems of malnutrition. 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.77 They are armed with packets of seeds. 00:08:30.81\00:08:33.17 So, you know, we promote a whole food plant-based diet. 00:08:33.21\00:08:37.05 And these are our church members 00:08:37.08\00:08:39.11 who are out there teaching people 00:08:39.15\00:08:40.75 how to use those vegetables seeds. 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.92 A lot of the people in Sub-Saharan Africa 00:08:42.95\00:08:46.39 are eating a lot of corn. 00:08:46.42\00:08:48.16 Okay. 00:08:48.19\00:08:49.52 I'm sure you've heard the names like in different countries. 00:08:49.56\00:08:51.49 It's nsima, posho, ugali, all these different names, 00:08:51.53\00:08:57.87 but it's the same food. 00:08:57.90\00:08:59.23 It's a corn porridge, 00:08:59.27\00:09:00.80 and it doesn't have the nutrients 00:09:00.84\00:09:02.17 that children need to grow and develop. 00:09:02.20\00:09:03.67 Oh, okay. 00:09:03.71\00:09:05.04 So we start by addressing this problem 00:09:05.07\00:09:06.78 with starting with farming, 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.14 which is where God got us started 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.28 in the Garden of Eden, right? 00:09:10.31\00:09:12.81 He put us in the garden, 00:09:12.85\00:09:14.18 He told us to garden 00:09:14.22\00:09:15.68 and we try to elevate that profession 00:09:15.72\00:09:18.95 by giving them skills, 00:09:18.99\00:09:20.32 but also saying, this is a dignified job 00:09:20.36\00:09:22.99 and you can make money off of it. 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.49 Yes. 00:09:24.53\00:09:25.86 You can make good money even. 00:09:25.89\00:09:27.23 Yes. So there's multiple benefits. 00:09:27.26\00:09:29.50 So you're growing your food. 00:09:29.53\00:09:32.43 You're getting like non-GMO, non, you know, 00:09:32.47\00:09:36.10 not all those chemicals and all of that stuff, 00:09:36.14\00:09:38.27 pesticides, all of that, growing that. 00:09:38.31\00:09:40.68 And you're able to sustain an income and a living. 00:09:40.71\00:09:44.98 Exactly. 00:09:45.01\00:09:46.35 And our E, if you remember, it stands for enterprise. 00:09:46.38\00:09:48.78 And so we're teaching the business skills. 00:09:48.82\00:09:51.05 First of all the trainers that you saw, 00:09:51.09\00:09:54.29 they organize groups in the villages 00:09:54.32\00:09:56.29 into savings clubs. 00:09:56.32\00:09:57.66 Okay. 00:09:57.69\00:09:59.03 So each week they come and they put 00:09:59.06\00:10:00.40 whatever little bit of money they can put in. 00:10:00.43\00:10:02.26 And then the group generally takes turns 00:10:02.30\00:10:04.70 of who gets to basically get the kitty of money 00:10:04.73\00:10:08.30 and then they can invest in something 00:10:08.34\00:10:09.90 that can help them start a business 00:10:09.94\00:10:11.51 that otherwise wouldn't have been possible. 00:10:11.54\00:10:14.88 Wow. Yeah, I like that. 00:13:58.03\00:13:59.37 So He tells us what's gonna happen. 00:13:59.40\00:14:00.74 And then He tells us what we're supposed to be doing 00:14:00.77\00:14:02.97 while it's happening 00:14:03.00\00:14:04.34 and caring for the least of these 00:14:04.37\00:14:06.24 is a huge part of that. 00:14:06.27\00:14:08.64 And we're so excited about the growth in the church. 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.95 And particularly, 00:14:10.98\00:14:12.31 even in regions that need this message 00:14:12.35\00:14:14.82 and we can reach them. 00:14:14.85\00:14:16.18 We have actually just partnered 00:14:16.22\00:14:17.75 with Malawi Adventist University 00:14:17.79\00:14:20.46 and they actually are taking our FARM STEW curriculum, 00:14:20.49\00:14:23.22 which is also on our website. 00:14:23.26\00:14:24.79 They're putting it on their school platform 00:14:24.83\00:14:26.80 and teaching it as a course that anybody can sign up for. 00:14:26.83\00:14:29.83 Wow. 00:14:29.86\00:14:31.20 We're talking to some other universities as well 00:14:31.23\00:14:32.77 about teaching FARM STEW as a course. 00:14:32.80\00:14:34.77 So they have our full, 00:14:34.80\00:14:37.17 it's called Life Abundant Curriculum. 00:14:37.21\00:14:40.11 And then we also will have 00:14:40.14\00:14:42.38 practical hands-on lessons going on the campus. 00:14:42.41\00:14:44.91 They have agriculture school 00:14:44.95\00:14:46.61 and a nursing school, public health school. 00:14:46.65\00:14:48.25 So they already have the experts there. 00:14:48.28\00:14:51.05 We're just supplementing their knowledge 00:14:51.09\00:14:52.99 with the practical hands-on part. 00:14:53.02\00:14:55.32 Nice. Now we actually have a video. 00:14:55.36\00:14:57.89 And why don't you tell us a little bit 00:14:57.93\00:14:59.73 as to what we can expect in this video 00:14:59.76\00:15:02.06 that we're gonna watch in just a second. 00:15:02.10\00:15:03.43 Sure. 00:15:03.47\00:15:04.80 So Pastor Amoli is one of our favorites 00:15:04.83\00:15:07.27 and he has embraced the message of FARM STEW. 00:15:07.30\00:15:09.57 He was one of our pastors in South Sudan. 00:15:09.60\00:15:12.57 He works in the refugee camps. 00:15:12.61\00:15:14.48 And so this video is just sharing the impact of FARM STEW 00:15:14.51\00:15:17.21 in the refugee camps. 00:15:17.25\00:15:18.71 Nice. 00:15:18.75\00:15:20.08 Let's go to that video right now. 00:15:20.12\00:15:24.19 When FARM STEW came in, with this idea 00:15:24.22\00:15:28.16 that we can grow our food 00:15:28.19\00:15:31.73 from this small compounds or small plot. 00:15:31.76\00:15:34.73 Now we have hope for our children, 00:15:34.76\00:15:37.80 we have hope for ourselves. 00:15:37.83\00:15:40.30 We have new things. 00:15:40.34\00:15:42.90 When we learned about the soya bean, 00:15:42.94\00:15:45.84 people could make milk from soya bean. 00:15:45.87\00:15:47.84 You know, I tell people that I say, 00:15:47.88\00:15:49.68 "Now FARM STEW will be like John the Baptist going ahead." 00:15:49.71\00:15:54.35 And then we as pastors and ministers will follow 00:15:54.38\00:15:57.19 with the message of the gospel. 00:15:57.22\00:15:59.69 It's powerful. 00:15:59.72\00:16:01.06 Wow. 00:16:04.49\00:16:05.83 What a testimony there. 00:16:05.86\00:16:07.20 Yeah. 00:16:07.23\00:16:08.56 I love how Pastor Amoli says that 00:16:08.60\00:16:09.93 it's like John the Baptist, 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.30 you know, preparing the way for the church. 00:16:11.33\00:16:13.80 And that's something that we take very seriously, 00:16:13.84\00:16:17.31 like FARM STEW is not a ministry 00:16:17.34\00:16:19.21 where you're ever gonna open our newsletter and say, 00:16:19.24\00:16:21.48 we got 500 baptisms 00:16:21.51\00:16:23.38 because really it's the local church. 00:16:23.41\00:16:26.28 I mean they know how to do evangelism. 00:16:26.31\00:16:29.12 The church in Sub-Saharan Africa 00:16:29.15\00:16:30.62 is growing at a 7 to 8% growth rate annually. 00:16:30.65\00:16:33.32 Wow. 00:16:33.36\00:16:34.69 When I started FARM STEW five years ago, 00:16:34.72\00:16:37.76 they had 8 million members in Sub-Saharan Africa. 00:16:37.79\00:16:40.80 Now it's nine. 00:16:40.83\00:16:42.16 So I don't need to teach them how to do evangelism, 00:16:42.20\00:16:45.20 but my training is in public health 00:16:45.23\00:16:47.04 and there is something that we can teach and we can share. 00:16:47.07\00:16:50.44 And there's a quote that I love by Sister White 00:16:50.47\00:16:53.68 that really talks about how to help the poor. 00:16:53.71\00:16:57.58 I don't know if they can pull that up. 00:16:57.61\00:17:00.35 Okay. 00:17:00.38\00:17:01.72 So here's this quote and I love, 00:17:01.75\00:17:03.08 and I do wanna say 00:17:03.12\00:17:04.45 this house that you can see in the picture here. 00:17:04.49\00:17:05.92 This is actually one of the refugee camp 00:17:05.95\00:17:08.96 trainees that we then hired to become a trainer 00:17:08.99\00:17:12.06 because you can see this garden 00:17:12.09\00:17:13.43 that they built or planted there. 00:17:13.46\00:17:16.20 But the quote says, 00:17:16.23\00:17:17.57 "You may give to the poor, and injure them, 00:17:17.60\00:17:18.97 because you teach them to be dependent. 00:17:19.00\00:17:21.24 Instead teach them to support themselves. 00:17:21.27\00:17:23.84 This will be true help. 00:17:23.87\00:17:25.51 The needy must be placed in positions 00:17:25.54\00:17:27.58 where they can help themselves." 00:17:27.61\00:17:29.24 Yes. 00:17:29.28\00:17:30.61 And, yeah, I don't know 00:17:30.65\00:17:32.55 if you'd heard that quote before. 00:17:32.58\00:17:33.98 I have not heard that quote, 00:17:34.02\00:17:35.65 but I mean, 00:17:35.68\00:17:37.32 it's very applicable to the situation 00:17:37.35\00:17:39.45 because let's say you go over there 00:17:39.49\00:17:41.62 and you teach 00:17:41.66\00:17:43.16 and you don't teach them how to farm. 00:17:43.19\00:17:44.86 Let's say you just feed people. 00:17:44.89\00:17:47.60 Well, then you're gonna go back home, 00:17:47.63\00:17:49.46 so what are they gonna do? 00:17:49.50\00:17:50.83 Exactly. 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.20 And so, FARM STEW bridges that gap. 00:17:52.23\00:17:53.87 Exactly. 00:17:53.90\00:17:55.24 And, you know, there's other places 00:17:55.27\00:17:56.60 where Ellen White talks about educate, educate, educate, 00:17:56.64\00:17:59.57 you know, and it's like, we just realize, 00:17:59.61\00:18:02.48 you know, I don't speak the local languages. 00:18:02.51\00:18:04.25 In Uganda there's 60 local languages, 00:18:04.28\00:18:06.88 you know? 00:18:06.92\00:18:08.25 But our trainers do, 00:18:08.28\00:18:09.62 you know, they can go out and do the education. 00:18:09.65\00:18:12.69 And then there's cultural differences too, 00:18:12.72\00:18:14.86 you know, going to the different places. 00:18:14.89\00:18:17.46 But the people over there know they grew up in the culture. 00:18:17.49\00:18:21.43 Exactly. 00:18:21.46\00:18:22.80 So, yeah, that's a really great model 00:18:22.83\00:18:25.60 that FARM STEW has. 00:18:25.63\00:18:27.07 Well, I praise God because 00:18:27.10\00:18:28.44 during COVID, you know, flights got canceled, 00:18:28.47\00:18:30.34 but our trainers were still out training. 00:18:30.37\00:18:32.94 And, you know, when you said something about the trainers, 00:18:32.97\00:18:36.75 I just wanted to bring up this little prop here. 00:18:36.78\00:18:40.62 This is something 00:18:40.65\00:18:41.98 that is in the home of almost every rural African 00:18:42.02\00:18:44.75 is a mortar and a pestle, good old fashion like. 00:18:44.79\00:18:48.02 And they pound, and they pound, and they pound, 00:18:48.06\00:18:50.29 and what we do with this is we actually teach them 00:18:50.33\00:18:52.86 to make soy milk. 00:18:52.89\00:18:54.50 Okay. 00:18:54.53\00:18:55.86 So often they've been growing soy beans, 00:18:55.90\00:18:57.83 but milk is a very important substance 00:18:57.87\00:19:00.64 that often they can't buy. 00:19:00.67\00:19:02.54 And especially in South Sudan 00:19:02.57\00:19:03.97 the wars have a lot of cattle have been either killed 00:19:04.01\00:19:06.71 or stolen or whatnot. 00:19:06.74\00:19:08.54 So in the refugee camps, 00:19:08.58\00:19:10.01 they, when you said local languages, 00:19:10.05\00:19:12.25 there are camps where there's 30 languages in one place, 00:19:12.28\00:19:16.48 but this soy milk, they call it the green cow. 00:19:16.52\00:19:20.86 The green cow. 00:19:20.89\00:19:22.66 I got it. 00:19:22.69\00:19:24.03 And Elias one of our trainers. 00:19:24.06\00:19:26.49 He speaks like six languages. 00:19:26.53\00:19:28.66 And so he's there translating and training and doing the, 00:19:28.70\00:19:31.50 you know, demo gardens and everything. 00:19:31.53\00:19:33.77 But he says that the green cow 00:19:33.80\00:19:35.40 is what's gonna bring peace in the villages 00:19:35.44\00:19:38.17 because they don't have to fight 00:19:38.21\00:19:39.54 over milk anymore. 00:19:39.57\00:19:41.81 So it's pretty cool. Yeah, that is. 00:19:41.84\00:19:43.18 My arm gets tired when I do it, 00:19:43.21\00:19:44.61 but I tell you they have more muscles than we do. 00:19:44.65\00:19:47.25 Yeah. 00:19:47.28\00:19:48.62 I believe it, that looks like it would be a little tough, 00:19:48.65\00:19:51.35 you know, constantly doing that. 00:19:51.39\00:19:53.22 But so the green cow, what do you have over here? 00:19:53.25\00:19:57.33 I see something that looks like a curriculum 00:19:57.36\00:20:00.10 or a college course or something? 00:20:00.13\00:20:01.60 Yeah, exactly. 00:20:01.63\00:20:02.96 So this is our FARM STEW manual, 00:20:03.00\00:20:04.83 our curriculum, 00:20:04.87\00:20:06.20 also available online on our website 00:20:06.23\00:20:07.80 under the recipe. 00:20:07.84\00:20:09.60 But this is the basic course. 00:20:09.64\00:20:11.34 And if, you know, there's a bit of a glare, 00:20:11.37\00:20:13.38 but you can see this is in Spanish 00:20:13.41\00:20:16.75 and we've just launched this past year in Cuba. 00:20:16.78\00:20:19.38 Okay. 00:20:19.41\00:20:20.75 And we wanna make all of our resources available 00:20:20.78\00:20:22.32 to Latin America as well. 00:20:22.35\00:20:23.69 There's a lot of challenges right now 00:20:23.72\00:20:25.35 in a lot of countries, 00:20:25.39\00:20:26.82 the COVID has caused food insecurity 00:20:26.86\00:20:29.72 in a lot of places. 00:20:29.76\00:20:31.09 So if we can get this information 00:20:31.13\00:20:32.89 into the hands of people, 00:20:32.93\00:20:34.40 help churches, especially be able to share this, 00:20:34.43\00:20:38.17 what we call the recipe for abundant life. 00:20:38.20\00:20:40.67 People can learn to grow their own food, 00:20:40.70\00:20:43.04 have the proper sanitation, and hand washing, 00:20:43.07\00:20:45.14 that'll help prevent COVID. 00:20:45.17\00:20:46.91 And, you know, just overall 00:20:46.94\00:20:48.84 be able to have a business mindset 00:20:48.88\00:20:51.51 so they can raise their own food, 00:20:51.55\00:20:54.62 earn their own money and become tithing, 00:20:54.65\00:20:57.42 participating members of our church as well. 00:20:57.45\00:20:59.59 Yes. 00:20:59.62\00:21:00.96 Now, as you mentioned, 00:21:00.99\00:21:02.32 you said COVID has created a lot of problems. 00:21:02.36\00:21:06.19 What are some challenges 00:21:06.23\00:21:07.56 that your organization has faced 00:21:07.60\00:21:09.56 and what did you do to overcome some of those challenges? 00:21:09.60\00:21:14.30 Well, the one thing COVID has taught me 00:21:14.34\00:21:18.51 is just really to trust the Lord 00:21:18.54\00:21:20.31 and to trust the model that He gave to us 00:21:20.34\00:21:22.74 which is the local people leading. 00:21:22.78\00:21:24.38 Yes. 00:21:24.41\00:21:25.75 And so, it's been very exciting in a lot of ways 00:21:25.78\00:21:28.52 because we've just decided, 00:21:28.55\00:21:30.12 you know, I can't go over there and see, 00:21:30.15\00:21:32.42 last year I didn't get over to Africa 00:21:32.45\00:21:35.09 but I can hire these local people. 00:21:35.12\00:21:37.99 So we actually really raised 00:21:38.03\00:21:39.36 the capacity of the local people. 00:21:39.39\00:21:41.30 And we actually recently just hired a finance officer, 00:21:41.33\00:21:44.87 a new one in Uganda, 00:21:44.90\00:21:46.23 who is, she's a Sabbath keeper. 00:21:46.27\00:21:48.04 I will tell you in the interview, 00:21:48.07\00:21:49.94 she said she was available to work right away 00:21:49.97\00:21:51.61 because she had left her job 00:21:51.64\00:21:52.97 because they were trying to make her work 00:21:53.01\00:21:54.34 on the Sabbath. 00:21:54.38\00:21:55.71 And I resonated with that so much 00:21:55.74\00:21:57.25 because that happened to me as well. 00:21:57.28\00:21:59.61 And it's actually partly how FARM STEW got started 00:21:59.65\00:22:02.28 was because I was working for a local health department 00:22:02.32\00:22:05.19 and they wouldn't put in writing 00:22:05.22\00:22:07.52 that they weren't gonna fire me over Sabbath. 00:22:07.56\00:22:09.32 And I thought, you know what? 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.43 I'm just gonna trust God, 00:22:11.46\00:22:13.16 go full-time with FARM STEW 00:22:13.19\00:22:14.83 even though I had, at the time I was the donor. 00:22:14.86\00:22:17.47 Yes. 00:22:17.50\00:22:18.83 When I started it, I was just spending my own money. 00:22:18.87\00:22:20.64 I said, I'm just gonna trust God. 00:22:20.67\00:22:22.47 So when in this interview we hired this finance officer 00:22:22.50\00:22:25.34 and I just thought, 00:22:25.37\00:22:26.88 she's the right woman for this job. 00:22:26.91\00:22:29.01 That was a strange answer to your question. 00:22:29.04\00:22:30.61 Your question is what have we learned since COVID, 00:22:30.65\00:22:32.51 but I'll just say 00:22:32.55\00:22:34.05 it's trusting the structure that we have 00:22:34.08\00:22:37.95 and then also having checks and balances. 00:22:37.99\00:22:40.09 So partly why we hired the finance officer 00:22:40.12\00:22:42.32 is we actually, 00:22:42.36\00:22:43.79 each were audited the FARM STEW International, 00:22:43.83\00:22:46.03 FARM STEW South Sudan, and FARM STEW Uganda. 00:22:46.06\00:22:47.86 Nice. 00:22:47.90\00:22:49.23 We had every organization 00:22:49.26\00:22:50.60 that's our major efforts are in those countries. 00:22:50.63\00:22:52.77 We have smaller efforts in others 00:22:52.80\00:22:54.30 with partner organizations, 00:22:54.34\00:22:56.14 but we had each audited and by local people 00:22:56.17\00:23:01.01 and it came out very clean. 00:23:01.04\00:23:03.38 We had a lot of things to learn, 00:23:03.41\00:23:04.75 just getting all the paperwork 00:23:04.78\00:23:06.11 and the checks and balances right. 00:23:06.15\00:23:07.48 But it came out very clean. 00:23:07.52\00:23:08.85 And I felt like God is just good, 00:23:08.88\00:23:12.45 because if we had a model 00:23:12.49\00:23:14.86 where it was just a bunch of us Americans 00:23:14.89\00:23:16.73 and going to run the show, we would have stopped. 00:23:16.76\00:23:20.10 Our ministry would have stopped, 00:23:20.13\00:23:22.03 but He had a plan already. 00:23:22.06\00:23:24.07 And He had prepared us for this. 00:23:24.10\00:23:25.43 Yes. And it's grown exponentially. 00:23:25.47\00:23:27.67 Yes. Even in this time. Yeah. 00:23:27.70\00:23:30.24 And that's the beautiful thing too 00:23:30.27\00:23:32.24 about that checks and balances that you have 00:23:32.27\00:23:35.24 because supporters know that 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.65 and when they receive these newsletters, 00:23:37.68\00:23:40.32 they know what is being done. 00:23:40.35\00:23:43.25 And they see the stories of the lives 00:23:43.28\00:23:46.19 that are being transformed as a result of FARM STEW. 00:23:46.22\00:23:49.86 So that's excellent. Right. 00:23:49.89\00:23:51.56 And I just wanna share 00:23:51.59\00:23:52.93 since you brought up this newsletter. 00:23:52.96\00:23:54.30 This one in particular, 00:23:54.33\00:23:55.66 I just love because 00:23:55.70\00:23:57.03 we have a story of a woman named Esther 00:23:57.07\00:23:58.53 who started this small business on the front 00:23:58.57\00:24:00.30 and she's selling vegetables. 00:24:00.34\00:24:02.10 And then inside, we have a strain named 00:24:02.14\00:24:04.47 about a woman named Monica 00:24:04.51\00:24:06.44 who did not know how to share Jesus 00:24:06.47\00:24:08.21 with her neighbors. 00:24:08.24\00:24:09.64 And she is now sharing them 00:24:09.68\00:24:12.28 by sharing vegetables from her garden. 00:24:12.31\00:24:14.45 And people are hungry. 00:24:14.48\00:24:15.82 Her neighbors are hungry, 00:24:15.85\00:24:17.19 but she is actually just so excited 00:24:17.22\00:24:19.39 because now her garden is like an evangelistic tool for her. 00:24:19.42\00:24:23.29 And we're really excited about that 00:24:23.32\00:24:24.99 because we know, 00:24:25.03\00:24:26.56 you know, if the people they know our theology, 00:24:26.59\00:24:29.83 they know our doctrines and they love them 00:24:29.86\00:24:31.63 just as I love them. 00:24:31.67\00:24:33.13 But sometimes if you can't, you know, James talks about, 00:24:33.17\00:24:36.37 you know, if somebody is hungry 00:24:36.40\00:24:37.74 or somebody is naked or whatever, 00:24:37.77\00:24:39.24 and you just say, you know, go get baptized. 00:24:39.27\00:24:42.11 Yeah. 00:24:42.14\00:24:43.48 It doesn't make a lot of sense to them. 00:24:43.51\00:24:45.08 So... Absolutely. 00:24:45.11\00:24:46.45 How are you meeting their practical needs? 00:24:46.48\00:24:48.18 Right. 00:24:48.22\00:24:49.55 It's that whole Christ method alone, 00:24:49.58\00:24:50.95 you know, winning their confidence 00:24:50.99\00:24:52.65 by desiring their good and showing sympathy. 00:24:52.69\00:24:57.49 And so, what I'm so excited about is, 00:24:57.53\00:25:00.10 you know, when I first wanted 00:25:00.13\00:25:01.50 to be a public health nutritionist, 00:25:01.53\00:25:03.06 I thought about me making a difference 00:25:03.10\00:25:05.20 You know, and I went off in my 20s, 00:25:05.23\00:25:06.74 I went to Romania, I went to Brazil. 00:25:06.77\00:25:08.50 I was working as a public health nutritionist, 00:25:08.54\00:25:10.54 but it was just me. 00:25:10.57\00:25:13.51 And then I had to come home. 00:25:13.54\00:25:14.88 So I couldn't help people in those countries 00:25:14.91\00:25:16.44 'cause I had a family here. 00:25:16.48\00:25:18.35 But now my church family is 21 million people strong. 00:25:18.38\00:25:24.02 And we can work as a family. 00:25:24.05\00:25:26.19 We can work as, you know, with body of Christ 00:25:26.22\00:25:28.32 towards the other analogy. 00:25:28.36\00:25:29.86 He can inspire us. He can equip us. 00:25:29.89\00:25:32.53 He can inspire people to fund the work 00:25:32.56\00:25:35.10 so that, you know, someone watching today, 00:25:35.13\00:25:37.90 they might have a gift 00:25:37.93\00:25:39.27 that they can give to FARM STEW. 00:25:39.30\00:25:40.80 We put it in the investment, 00:25:40.84\00:25:42.37 into our trainers going out 00:25:42.40\00:25:44.01 and then saving the little babies, 00:25:44.04\00:25:45.91 you know, up in South Sudan 00:25:45.94\00:25:47.68 or Malawi or wherever 00:25:47.71\00:25:49.44 where we're gonna meet in heaven. 00:25:49.48\00:25:50.95 Yes. 00:25:50.98\00:25:52.31 And when Jesus says, 00:25:52.35\00:25:53.68 "What did you do for the least of these?" 00:25:53.72\00:25:55.42 We're gonna say, "We did it." 00:25:55.45\00:25:56.85 Amen. You know. 00:25:56.89\00:25:59.22 So I wanna transition 00:25:59.25\00:26:00.66 into what are some of FARM STEW's needs? 00:26:00.69\00:26:04.66 What do you need as an organization? 00:26:04.69\00:26:06.63 How can our viewers and listeners 00:26:06.66\00:26:08.80 support your cause? 00:26:08.83\00:26:10.17 Yeah. 00:26:10.20\00:26:11.53 Well, first of all, we need prayers for our staff. 00:26:11.57\00:26:13.13 They're in some pretty dangerous places. 00:26:13.17\00:26:15.30 And so, we actually list our staff 00:26:15.34\00:26:16.67 is also on our website. 00:26:16.71\00:26:18.47 And then, of course, on top of the prayers, 00:26:18.51\00:26:21.44 we pray that you will be inspired to give 00:26:21.48\00:26:24.68 and primarily, 00:26:24.71\00:26:26.21 you know, it's the local people that are doing that. 00:26:26.25\00:26:28.78 So if you're in an area 00:26:28.82\00:26:30.15 where you're suffering from hunger, 00:26:30.19\00:26:31.65 disease or poverty, 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.02 you know, you also go onto our website 00:26:33.05\00:26:35.92 and learn this curriculum and go teach your churches. 00:26:35.96\00:26:38.79 There's a mini course 00:26:38.83\00:26:40.83 that actually is designed for just that. 00:26:40.86\00:26:42.63 It's a PowerPoint, 00:26:42.66\00:26:44.00 and then it has a script 00:26:44.03\00:26:45.37 and both of them are downloadable. 00:26:45.40\00:26:46.74 So we need people 00:26:46.77\00:26:48.10 that will take this to their churches 00:26:48.14\00:26:49.80 and tell others about this message. 00:26:49.84\00:26:51.34 If it resonates with you, 00:26:51.37\00:26:53.01 share the recipe is what we say. 00:26:53.04\00:26:54.38 Amen. 00:26:54.41\00:26:55.74 Now we have a contact page, 00:26:55.78\00:26:57.11 so people can know how to get in touch with you. 00:26:57.15\00:26:59.28 Why don't you share your address and phone number 00:26:59.31\00:27:02.15 and all of that stuff that's on that contact page? 00:27:02.18\00:27:04.32 Sounds great.
