about six years old,

up being separated

and having to divorce

turn for the worse,

very large family.

And my mother has a large,

and my sister and I

were living with my mother.

As soon as the
divorce was taking place,

and during that time,

she was staying
with a family member.

Unbeknownst to her,

this family member
was addicted to drugs

and other terrible substances.

And I remember my dad
early on as a Christian

used to teach us to
pray before we used to go to,

before we go to bed.

And I remember I
was kneeling right there

before our
bedside with my mother,

my sister and I were
sleeping on the same bed.

And I would just say my
prayers and all of a sudden,

I heard this very distinct voice

in my mind saying, "Get out."

It was a very,
very intense voice,

a man's voice, strong voice

and opened up my eyes

because there was no
other man in the room

other than, you
know, just myself

and my mother and my sister.

And so I was kind of
shocked and I told my mother,

she said, it's going to be okay.

And so I remember
just getting into bed,

fell asleep and had this dream.

I'll never forget,

there was a bunch of
angels flying all around saying,

And I remember, I
opened up my eyes,

and I could just
smell smoke and drugs

perfuming the
atmosphere in our room

and I could hear voices,

different kinds of voices

coming from
behind the bedroom door

on the other side
of our bedroom door

and I was petrified,

absolutely petrified.

My sister was
crying. My mother was crying.

I was crying, did
not know what to do,

Yeah, we were and so my mother,

I asked my mother
what we're going to do.

So I went over and
locked our bedroom door.

know, by God's grace,

we weren't on the second
floor of this apartment complex,

there on the main level.

So we opened up the window,
we crawled out of the window,

jumped out of it ran
to a neighbor's house,

apartment room.

And as soon as we got there,

I could still
hear this family member

screaming and yelling

all the way from
this person's house.

And all of a sudden,
I heard this big bang.

And he busted
the bedroom door open

and he said, "Where are you?

I'm going to kill you."

And so, from an early childhood,

I must have been five or six.

I literally have escaped

running from my own
family members' home,

escaping death
because of the drug abuse

that was taking
place in their life.

And so as an early
child, just saw this stuff.

It really traumatized me.

It was terrible.

Now what led to you
almost being abducted?

So my mother finally,

able to get her own place.

She worked really hard

and we ended up
having our own little spot.

And it was in a good area too.

But I remember my mother said,

And so my mother, I
still remember this, Jason,

like it was yesterday.

She gave me
this nice big cookie.

And, you know,

when parents give
you something sweet,

So I had that cookie.

a first couple of steps

right across from the door,

He had one hand behind his back.

And he had the
other hand extend said,

And as soon as I
saw him, I was thinking,

But he kept saying, "I

And he wasn't moving,

he just kept trying to
tempt me to come forward to him.

At that time,

I just extended my
hand with my cookie.

And I said,
"Well, do you want this?"

And he says, "No, I

So he saw that I wasn't moving.

So he began to move towards me.

he was arm's length away,

that he had behind his back

and he had a knife.

And at that exact
moment, he was about to grab me.

My Puerto Rican mother
walks out of the front door

and she sees him.

Now I don't know, Jason.

I know last time we
kind of talked about this,

but I don't know
if you've ever met

a Puerto Rican mother,

and when they get
angry, it is like a hurricane.

It is not pleasant.
And my mother saw this man.

He was much bigger than her.

He had a knife in his
hand. He was about to grab me.

And as soon as he saw my mom,

he just turned
around and booked it.

He started running,

and my mother just
start running after him.

Now how tall is your mom?

My mom's
probably like 5'6", 5'7".

So this grown man just started.

She was chasing this
man and he was, he took off.

He was petrified.

Unfortunately, my
mother didn't catch him

and neither did the police

because she ended up calling

and they couldn't
find him or anything.

And so, Jason, at this time,

I don't know I'm
six, seven years old.

I've had experiences
with my own family members

that have almost ended my life.

I'm petrified of
them to a certain degree.

And now I'm petrified of
this man who I never met,

who was trying to kill me.

And so as a little boy,

I didn't want to live anymore.

I didn't, I thought is
this what life is about?

I'm afraid of my own family.

This man's after me.

As a little boy, I
remember instead of going out

and playing with my
cousins or my friends outside,

I was too scared.

I thought, well, maybe
that man is around the corner

just waiting for me

to just take a
wrong turn or something

for him to finish
off what he started.

I only felt safe when
I was close to my mother.

a lot of trauma

that I
unfortunately went through.

I oftentimes thought in my mind

live this kind of life

where I'm petrified
every minute of the day

So, what happened?

What happened as you got older?

Yeah, you know, a lot happened.

I guess one of
the big experiences

that I went through

was when I got into high school.

You know, I just,

I got into a lot of
trouble with the law.

By the time my
senior year in high school,

I was going to be going to jail

instead of graduating
with my graduating class,

just a lot of poor decisions.

And I mean, just
all kinds of mischief

I was getting into

because that's what
kind of my environment was

for a very long time.

And, Jason, I was not happy.

You know, even doing everything

that the world
says for you to do,

I was doing it.

I was having fun doing it.

But every single night
when I would go to bed,

I was not satisfied.

I was not happy.

Genuinely inside
I had this emptiness

that nothing in
this world could fill.

And so I ended up

not going to
prison by God's grace.

It was a relief.

I did a lot of
community service.

And yet I still
didn't learn my lesson.

I didn't know what to
turn to or who to turn to.

And so at that time,

finally, someone
handed me a flyer.

And it was unusual
because basketball was my life.

And this guy I
played basketball with

and he said,
David, you got to go here.

And Jason, he said,
ex rapper at this church,

but in my mind,

I just heard
rapper at this church.

Wow.

And so he's invited
me to go to church to.

In my mind to go hear a rapper

and I was kind of interested
in that music at that time.

And so I was like,

man, I never heard
anyone rap at church.

I think I'm going to go to this.

Yeah, the Holy
Spirit allowed you to hear

what he needed you to hear
to get you to go over there.

And, Jason, I have to tell
you, it was perfect timing.

such mysterious ways

because I remember

I was standing in
front of this huge church

thinking I'm going
to go to a rap concert.

And I said one of
my first prayers ever

because up to this
time I was so angry with God

with all the things that
I went through as a child,

I didn't even know
if there was a God.

How could there be a God

if He allowed me to go through
so much suffering and pain?

And I just said
for the first time,

one of my first prayers,

I said, "God, if You're real,
I need You to speak to me now.

seeing this thinking

he was going to speak to
me through a rap concert.

And I walk into the
church and I see this man,

African-American man,
bald head, huge goatee,

come to the front, in a suit

and I'm thinking
I've never seen a rapper

rapping in suit.

It's going to be interesting.

And it happened to
be Pastor Ivor Meyers.

Yes.

And Pastor Ivor Meyers
shared his powerful testimony,

was a series then in 2007

called Escape
from the Black Hole.

And he shared his
personal testimony.

And I have to tell you,
Jason, at first, I was angry.

I thought this guy tricked me.

He said he was going
to go to a rap concert

and this guy ain't rapping

and he's talking
about his testimony.

And so, I was
quite angry at first,

but then I just
started listening.

And I was amazed

that this man turned
down an $800,000 contract

in the early 90s for God,

this man had
everything right in his hands.

And I thought if I
just had that money,

if I just had that life,

then I would be free

from all the pain and
suffering I ever went to.

But this man turned it all down

for this man named Jesus Christ.

And I have to tell you, Jason,
for the first time in my life,

I actually was paying attention

to what this man
was saying in church.

And it moved me to the
core, he made an appeal.

Whoever wants to
give their life to Jesus,

come to the front.

And, Jason, I,

the first thought that
came to my mind was this.

There's no way God wants me.

I'm such a great sinner.

I've done so much bad stuff.

You know, I've gone too far.

There's no way
God would accept me.

And as soon as
those terrible thoughts

are entering my mind,

the next thing that
Pastor Meyer said was,

it doesn't matter
what your reputation is,

it doesn't
matter what you've done.

and He wants you now.

reverently go to the front,

streaming down my face.

I was like, Lord, this is

And for the
first time in my life,

I actually felt
completeness, satisfaction, joy

describing that moment,

that God can get a hold of us.
