How did that come about? 00:01:34.39\00:01:36.49 Well, it's a long story, 00:01:36.52\00:01:39.03 but in short it was a wonderful case 00:01:39.06\00:01:41.16 of friendship evangelism by my dear friend 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.26 and now our co-worker Cherry Olin and her family, 00:01:43.30\00:01:46.50 very blessed by their perseverance 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.54 in reaching me with the gospel. 00:01:48.57\00:01:50.61 But then I say that it was actually the Ugandans 00:01:50.64\00:01:53.34 that finally got me to join the church 00:01:53.38\00:01:56.48 and get baptized, 00:01:56.51\00:01:57.85 and that was just four short years ago actually, 00:01:57.88\00:02:00.62 and they are the inspiration for the launch of FARM STEW. 00:02:00.65\00:02:04.02 Praise the Lord. 00:02:04.05\00:02:05.39 And we have Dr. Fred, 00:02:05.42\00:02:07.46 you mind if I call you Dr. Fred? 00:02:07.49\00:02:09.09 Dr. Fred is fine. All right. 00:02:09.12\00:02:10.96 Dr. Fred, tell me a little bit about your background, 00:02:10.99\00:02:14.30 your upbringing? 00:02:14.33\00:02:15.90 Again, I was born and raised in Uganda. 00:02:15.93\00:02:20.17 When I reached the university level, 00:02:20.20\00:02:23.37 I came to US. 00:02:23.41\00:02:24.74 Okay. 00:02:24.77\00:02:26.11 To Loma Linda to take my education 00:02:26.14\00:02:28.21 and I took nutrition and biochemistry. 00:02:28.24\00:02:31.15 Now, after I finished my education at Loma Linda, 00:02:32.18\00:02:35.85 I joined Loma Linda Foods 00:02:35.88\00:02:37.89 to work there 00:02:37.92\00:02:39.65 as a nutritionist. 00:02:39.69\00:02:43.09 Now, 00:02:43.12\00:02:44.59 I saw how they take these 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.00 simple plant-based foods 00:02:47.03\00:02:50.40 and bring nutritious food 00:02:50.43\00:02:52.27 out of those products. 00:02:52.30\00:02:54.67 And I say, we can do that 00:02:54.70\00:02:56.84 because I'm thinking of the country 00:02:56.87\00:02:59.04 where I came from. 00:02:59.07\00:03:00.54 We have areas 00:03:00.58\00:03:02.24 where malnutrition runs rampant. 00:03:02.28\00:03:07.72 And we said, "We can do that." 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.68 But, of course, I didn't know 00:03:09.72\00:03:12.29 how to do it because, of course, I didn't have money. 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.39 But then, I was... 00:03:15.42\00:03:17.29 One time I was volunteering 00:03:17.33\00:03:18.96 in Adventist community center in St. Louis, 00:03:18.99\00:03:24.50 then someone who had attended one of the conferences, 00:03:24.53\00:03:28.00 I think it was held in Chicago 00:03:28.04\00:03:31.21 where Joy Kauffman was presenter, 00:03:31.24\00:03:35.38 and he came back and asked me, 00:03:35.41\00:03:36.88 "Do you know FARM STEW?" 00:03:36.91\00:03:38.25 And I said, "FARM STEW? 00:03:38.28\00:03:39.61 What is that?" 00:03:39.65\00:03:40.98 "Are they cooking stew or something like that?" 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.18 And he said, "No. 00:03:43.22\00:03:44.55 And it's in Uganda" I said, "In Uganda? 00:03:44.59\00:03:46.12 Never heard of it?" 00:03:46.15\00:03:47.96 Then I wanted to hear more about it 00:03:47.99\00:03:51.13 and I wanted to talk to her, 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.49 but I realized that she was gonna be 00:03:52.53\00:03:54.56 in the same conference where I would be. 00:03:54.60\00:03:56.83 So I said, "I would talk to her." 00:03:56.87\00:03:58.87 And she introduced me to FARM STEW 00:03:58.90\00:04:02.90 and I was hooked. 00:04:02.94\00:04:04.27 Wow. 00:04:04.31\00:04:05.64 So you caught the vision? 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.01 Exactly. 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.38 By the way what I have forgotten that 00:04:08.41\00:04:10.35 really I've been an Adventist for all my life. 00:04:10.38\00:04:14.28 I was born an Adventist 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.02 and so always been looking for 00:04:16.05\00:04:20.79 something where we can go and help our people 00:04:20.82\00:04:23.66 spiritually and physically. 00:04:23.69\00:04:25.83 So FARM STEW is where I felt that 00:04:25.86\00:04:28.66 it's doing something for my native country 00:04:28.70\00:04:33.60 about nutrition and well-being. 00:04:33.64\00:04:35.97 Yes, yes Praise God. 00:04:36.00\00:04:37.77 What is the mission of FARM STEW? 00:04:37.81\00:04:40.18 So our mission is to improve the health 00:04:40.21\00:04:43.04 and well-being of poor families and vulnerable people 00:04:43.08\00:04:46.95 by sharing the recipe of abundant life 00:04:46.98\00:04:49.18 throughout the world. 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.55 Wow. 00:04:50.59\00:04:51.92 So this recipe of abundant life, 00:04:51.95\00:04:53.29 you might be curious? 00:04:53.32\00:04:54.66 I am. 00:04:54.69\00:04:56.02 It's an eight letter health acronym. 00:04:56.06\00:04:57.99 You may have heard of other health messages 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.26 that are expressed with eight letters. 00:05:00.30\00:05:01.76 NEWSTART. Yeah. 00:11:30.95\00:11:32.29 Nobody wants be part of that. 00:11:32.32\00:11:34.96 So we try to come in 00:11:34.99\00:11:36.46 and build up the local community, 00:11:36.49\00:11:38.76 we hire locals, they speak the local language, 00:11:38.79\00:11:41.00 they know the local culture 00:11:41.03\00:11:42.80 and then the other thing is 00:11:42.83\00:11:44.73 they try to find model people in the community 00:11:44.77\00:11:47.84 that become farmers to volunteer. 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.50 Nice. 00:11:49.54\00:11:50.87 These are the people that we might have a cooking class 00:11:50.91\00:11:52.84 or we might have a gardening class, 00:11:52.87\00:11:54.34 hands-on, everything's very hands-on practical. 00:11:54.38\00:11:57.05 And teaching them the skills they need to thrive 00:11:57.08\00:11:59.68 right where they are. 00:11:59.71\00:12:01.18 And then we'll go back and see 00:12:01.22\00:12:02.95 who are the families that are truly, truly implementing. 00:12:02.98\00:12:05.65 And we do have a few stories to share of people 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.76 that are implementing this work at a very high level. 00:12:08.79\00:12:11.26 Yes. 00:12:11.29\00:12:12.63 Please share them. 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.00 Okay, great. 00:12:14.03\00:12:15.36 I'm gonna jump to the story of Mr. Wilson. 00:12:15.40\00:12:16.93 Okay. 00:12:16.97\00:12:18.30 We train this on tippy taps 00:12:18.33\00:12:20.44 which is a hand washing station system 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.97 that really helps people be able to wash their hands. 00:12:23.00\00:12:26.37 It's one of the most important... 00:12:26.41\00:12:28.48 The World Health Organization says it's the most 00:12:28.51\00:12:30.95 health preventing behavior that you can... 00:12:30.98\00:12:33.08 Not health preventing, disease preventing behavior 00:12:33.11\00:12:35.55 that you can have. 00:12:35.58\00:12:36.99 And so these tippy taps are life changing. 00:12:37.02\00:12:41.56 But Mr. Wilson found that his actually got stolen at night. 00:12:41.59\00:12:46.46 Oh, wow. 00:12:46.49\00:12:47.83 And he was frustrated. 00:12:47.86\00:12:49.20 But we had also taught about enterprise, 00:12:49.23\00:12:50.67 helping people to think in entrepreneurial ways 00:12:50.70\00:12:53.34 'cause there's not really jobs out, 00:12:53.37\00:12:54.80 especially in the more rural villages, 00:12:54.84\00:12:56.47 there's not very many jobs. 00:12:56.50\00:12:57.84 Yes. 00:12:57.87\00:12:59.21 So Mr. Wilson got creative. 00:12:59.24\00:13:00.78 He said, I could make a tippy tap on a stand 00:13:00.81\00:13:04.05 that could be taken in at night so it can't be stolen, 00:13:04.08\00:13:08.12 and then the model was such a great idea 00:13:08.15\00:13:10.32 that he started a whole business 00:13:10.35\00:13:11.99 making these tippy tap stands for his neighbors. 00:13:12.02\00:13:13.96 So he came up with, 00:13:13.99\00:13:15.32 poured the idea for a portable tippy tap? 00:13:15.36\00:13:17.73 Yes. Wow, that's incredible. 00:13:17.76\00:13:19.96 Yes. It's very cool actually. 00:13:20.00\00:13:22.33 Yes. 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.27 So now people have a place 00:13:24.30\00:13:25.63 where they can wash their hands. 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.37 What about portable water? 00:13:28.40\00:13:31.27 So water is a challenge in a lot of these communities 00:13:31.31\00:13:33.84 and that's something we as a board of directors, 00:13:33.88\00:13:36.18 and Dr. Nyanzi is on our board of directors, 00:13:36.21\00:13:39.15 and we really went through a process of saying, 00:13:39.18\00:13:42.02 "We've got to do more for these communities." 00:13:42.05\00:13:44.59 A number of the places are they... 00:13:44.62\00:13:47.29 Some of them like Kalungama village 00:13:47.32\00:13:49.66 where we're working with the women's group, 00:13:49.69\00:13:51.79 very powerful testimonies coming out of this. 00:13:51.83\00:13:53.66 If you go to YouTube and type in FARM STEW, 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.93 you can see these testimonies. 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.47 But we found out that they are walking 00:13:57.50\00:13:59.90 two miles for water. 00:13:59.93\00:14:01.94 Two miles for water? Yes. 00:14:01.97\00:14:03.57 And then they are carrying it back two miles? 00:14:03.61\00:14:05.67 Yeah. 00:14:05.71\00:14:07.04 And actually we're teaching farming. 00:14:07.08\00:14:08.91 So not only are they carrying it back for themselves, 00:14:08.94\00:14:10.91 but they have been carrying it back 00:14:10.95\00:14:12.28 to water these little seedlings. 00:14:12.31\00:14:13.65 How many of us would garden in that circumstance? 00:14:13.68\00:14:16.05 Yeah, I don't know if I would make it. 00:14:16.08\00:14:17.75 I don't think I would either. 00:14:17.79\00:14:19.25 Yes. 00:14:19.29\00:14:20.62 But, so we decided that 00:14:20.66\00:14:21.99 we really needed to do something better. 00:14:22.02\00:14:23.36 Again, our philosophy is local. 00:14:23.39\00:14:25.03 So we found actually a local business enterprise 00:14:25.06\00:14:27.33 that's a well drilling company. 00:14:27.36\00:14:31.03 They're called Freedom Drillers. 00:14:31.07\00:14:32.70 We're just kind of cool because 00:14:32.73\00:14:34.07 our theme for this year is freedom. 00:14:34.10\00:14:35.47 Wow. 00:14:35.50\00:14:36.84 And we wanna bring freedom, in our water campaign 00:14:36.87\00:14:38.81 we're calling freedom from disease and drudgery. 00:14:38.84\00:14:41.24 You can imagine the drudgery of carrying water that far. 00:14:41.28\00:14:43.81 Yes. 00:14:43.85\00:14:45.18 And often it's even young girls who are very vulnerable 00:14:45.21\00:14:47.68 when they are out there by themselves 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.05 just getting the water. 00:14:49.08\00:14:50.42 It's terrible situation. 00:14:50.45\00:14:51.79 So our plan is to fix or repair 00:14:51.82\00:14:55.52 or build the new at least 50 pumps this year. 00:14:55.56\00:14:58.93 Wow, it sounds like you got a big project going on, 00:14:58.96\00:15:02.56 a huge project. 00:15:02.60\00:15:04.43 Can you tell me any stories of maybe a life 00:15:04.47\00:15:07.77 that's been transformed 00:15:07.80\00:15:09.14 or lives that have been transformed 00:15:09.17\00:15:10.51 as a result of FARM STEW? 00:15:10.54\00:15:13.61 Yes. 00:15:13.64\00:15:14.98 When I had that opportunity to go back to Uganda 00:15:15.01\00:15:19.61 to really see what FARM STEW does, 00:15:19.65\00:15:22.18 I was able to go in a placed called a German 00:15:22.22\00:15:25.15 out in the northern part of Uganda, 00:15:25.19\00:15:27.49 and this is a mostly... 00:15:27.52\00:15:30.53 We have mostly refugees. 00:15:30.56\00:15:32.69 And in those refugee areas, they don't have enough space 00:15:32.73\00:15:36.70 to grow their own food. 00:15:36.73\00:15:38.97 They have little place where they can do gardening 00:15:39.00\00:15:42.27 but it's not enough. 00:15:42.30\00:15:43.87 So there's this leader here who used to be a teacher 00:15:43.91\00:15:47.84 and he decided to be involved with FARM STEW. 00:15:47.88\00:15:53.35 And what he introduced was 00:15:53.38\00:15:56.28 to start a community gardening 00:15:56.32\00:15:59.25 where all those different families 00:15:59.29\00:16:02.19 in that community can go 00:16:02.22\00:16:04.63 and have a place where they can grow food 00:16:04.66\00:16:07.53 to feed their families 00:16:07.56\00:16:08.90 and sometimes to sell the excess. 00:16:08.93\00:16:12.43 Wow. 00:16:12.47\00:16:13.80 Yes. Wow. 00:16:13.84\00:16:15.17 And so I remember, you know, I've had the opportunity 00:16:15.20\00:16:18.41 to sit down with you and talk to you guys, 00:16:18.44\00:16:22.14 and I remember you sharing something with me about 00:16:22.18\00:16:24.38 how the communities would come together 00:16:24.41\00:16:26.68 and they would pool their money together. 00:16:26.72\00:16:29.32 Can you talk on that a little bit? 00:16:29.35\00:16:32.09 Yes, I'll let Joy touch on that. 00:16:32.12\00:16:34.16 Sounds good. 00:16:34.19\00:16:35.52 We have what's called 'Community Savings Clubs', 00:16:35.56\00:16:38.29 and so a lot of the people in these poor, 00:16:38.33\00:16:41.96 you know, circumstances, 00:16:42.00\00:16:43.97 the money just that they have it 00:16:44.00\00:16:45.50 just passes through their hands. 00:16:45.53\00:16:47.30 But when we provide a context 00:16:47.34\00:16:49.80 or a club setting where everyone, 00:16:49.84\00:16:52.07 the community sets the rules and they come together 00:16:52.11\00:16:54.98 and they decide every week 00:16:55.01\00:16:56.54 we're gonna put in a certain amount of money 00:16:56.58\00:16:58.51 so in one community might be 50 cents a week, 00:16:58.55\00:17:01.55 another, one of our communities Kalungama village, 00:17:01.58\00:17:04.45 they were putting in a $1.75 a week 00:17:04.49\00:17:07.36 which is huge, really. 00:17:07.39\00:17:10.16 Dr. Fred was saying, 00:17:10.19\00:17:11.53 they often are making like $20 a month. 00:17:11.56\00:17:14.56 Wow. $20 a month. 00:17:14.60\00:17:15.96 Well, that was gonna be my next question 00:17:16.00\00:17:17.33 to break that down 00:17:17.37\00:17:18.70 as to why a $1.75 a week 00:17:18.73\00:17:23.20 is a huge deal? 00:17:23.24\00:17:25.27 So they're making $20 a month? 00:17:25.31\00:17:28.24 $20 a month and sometime those are the privilege. 00:17:28.28\00:17:32.28 In some areas, known to the whole country 00:17:32.31\00:17:35.08 but in the areas where they're poverty stricken, 00:17:35.12\00:17:38.72 they don't have enough money. 00:17:38.75\00:17:40.09 So to spare a $1.75, that's a lot. 00:17:40.12\00:17:44.46 Now each dollar, 00:17:44.49\00:17:45.83 if you want to know the equivalent of dollar, 00:17:45.86\00:17:49.36 its equivalent to 3,500 shillings. 00:17:49.40\00:17:54.20 That's what they use. 00:17:54.24\00:17:55.94 But you said, okay, so they have a lot of money, 00:17:55.97\00:17:58.54 I mean, 3,500, 00:17:58.57\00:18:01.88 how much does a gallon of milk cost? 00:18:01.91\00:18:04.61 Yes. 00:18:04.65\00:18:06.01 It will cost, 00:18:06.05\00:18:08.48 let's see... 00:18:08.52\00:18:11.99 $3. 00:18:12.02\00:18:13.66 Okay. 00:18:13.69\00:18:15.02 Which is more than 10,000 shillings. 00:18:15.06\00:18:20.23 Wow. 00:18:20.26\00:18:21.60 And remember, $3 00:18:21.63\00:18:23.10 when you are getting $20 a month. 00:18:23.13\00:18:25.73 Yes. 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.10 You can see what the problem they have in these areas. 00:18:27.14\00:18:31.01 Yes. 00:18:31.04\00:18:32.37 And you can see from that why there is just so many 00:18:32.41\00:18:34.54 severely malnourished children. 00:18:34.58\00:18:36.75 We try to go places where at least one in three 00:18:36.78\00:18:39.81 of the children is suffering, 00:18:39.85\00:18:42.18 what's called 'stunting' 00:18:42.22\00:18:43.55 which means it's a type of malnutrition 00:18:43.59\00:18:45.89 that is so severe, 00:18:45.92\00:18:47.46 it's gonna affect them for life. 00:18:47.49\00:18:49.06 Wow. 00:18:49.09\00:18:50.43 And we want to prevent stunting from happening. 00:18:50.46\00:18:52.93 Yes. 00:18:52.96\00:18:54.30 And as you can imagine, who can afford milk 00:18:54.33\00:18:55.66 in that circumstance? 00:18:55.70\00:18:57.07 So when we go 00:18:57.10\00:18:58.43 and we teach them to grow soy beans 00:18:58.47\00:19:00.50 and that they can make their own milk 00:19:00.54\00:19:02.84 in just a simple mortar and pestle like they love it. 00:19:02.87\00:19:06.71 They absolutely love it. 00:19:06.74\00:19:08.08 And I... Yes. 00:19:08.11\00:19:09.44 Every single video, I know Americans kind of have 00:19:09.48\00:19:10.91 different feelings about soy milk 00:19:10.95\00:19:12.51 but every video that they bring in 00:19:12.55\00:19:15.58 from the field that the trainers send in, 00:19:15.62\00:19:18.12 probably the first thing out of the people's mouth is 00:19:18.15\00:19:20.66 they taught us how to make milk. 00:19:20.69\00:19:22.32 Wow. 00:19:22.36\00:19:23.69 And actually in South Sudan, 00:19:23.73\00:19:25.49 lot of the war was actually fighting over cows. 00:19:25.53\00:19:28.86 So lot of the displaced people, the refugees, 00:19:28.90\00:19:31.17 part of their grief is they don't have cows 00:19:31.20\00:19:33.50 and they can't get milk. 00:19:33.54\00:19:35.00 And we had this Amon, 00:19:35.04\00:19:36.91 who he is talking about work in these refugee camps. 00:19:36.94\00:19:39.74 They actually, 00:19:39.77\00:19:42.04 they say that's bringing peace amongst these warring tribes 00:19:42.08\00:19:45.25 because normally, you know, after fight over milk 00:19:45.28\00:19:47.62 is they have what they called the green cow, 00:19:47.65\00:19:49.88 but then also they're coming together, 00:19:49.92\00:19:51.62 cooking together. 00:19:51.65\00:19:53.02 Some of these refugee camps, 00:19:53.05\00:19:54.39 they have 42 language groups. 00:19:54.42\00:19:56.06 Wow. 00:19:56.09\00:19:57.43 And our trainers are so amazing like lot of them actually, 00:19:57.46\00:20:01.16 these are full time employees of FARM STEW Uganda 00:20:01.20\00:20:04.73 and they know often five or six languages. 00:20:04.77\00:20:08.10 Wow, five or six languages? 00:20:08.14\00:20:11.07 They're so smart. 00:20:11.11\00:20:12.44 And they train, you know they choose people 00:20:12.47\00:20:15.31 from the different language groups 00:20:15.34\00:20:16.68 that speak maybe one of their languages 00:20:16.71\00:20:18.51 and then they teach them to train others. 00:20:18.55\00:20:20.52 So we've counted, we have actually hands-on 00:20:20.55\00:20:23.82 our trainers have trained 80,000 participants, 00:20:23.85\00:20:28.16 and we are so excited. 00:20:28.19\00:20:29.82 I know that number soon will be much, much higher. 00:20:29.86\00:20:33.36 But we can't even count the number of people 00:20:33.40\00:20:35.66 that those people that have been trained, 00:20:35.70\00:20:37.67 have gone and trained. 00:20:37.70\00:20:39.03 Yes, yes. 00:20:39.07\00:20:40.40 And you wanna switch, there's a picture 00:20:40.44\00:20:41.77 that we have of the greens that they're preparing greens. 00:20:41.80\00:20:44.84 So this is us showing just something that's so important. 00:20:44.87\00:20:47.84 We take for granted how important greens are, 00:20:47.88\00:20:50.85 although most Americans don't eat their greens 00:20:50.88\00:20:52.75 like they should. 00:20:52.78\00:20:54.12 Yes, that is true. 00:20:54.15\00:20:55.48 Actually African-American diet was the collard greens. 00:20:55.52\00:20:58.15 They lead the way in like consumption 00:20:58.19\00:21:00.26 of dark leafy greens. 00:21:00.29\00:21:01.92 And in fact we could learn a lot from that. 00:21:01.96\00:21:05.23 But the greens in this context, 00:21:05.26\00:21:07.86 they are so important for iron. 00:21:07.90\00:21:10.37 Over half of the children are severely anaemic, 00:21:10.40\00:21:12.70 lacking iron. 00:21:12.73\00:21:14.07 Yes. 00:21:14.10\00:21:15.44 So just teaching how to even grow greens 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.01 and also there's wild greens growing everywhere. 00:21:17.04\00:21:19.51 It's a tropical country. 00:21:19.54\00:21:20.88 Many of them are edible, people don't realize that. 00:21:20.91\00:21:22.81 They get so excited when they realized 00:21:22.84\00:21:24.71 they can actually make food. 00:21:24.75\00:21:26.08 Mustard, turnip greens are good too. 00:21:26.11\00:21:28.35 I do like collard greens, 00:21:28.38\00:21:29.72 I like mustard, turnip greens too. 00:21:29.75\00:21:31.72 There's so many awesome greens 00:21:31.75\00:21:33.66 and they all make your circulation flow, 00:21:33.69\00:21:36.22 your brain functions better 00:21:36.26\00:21:37.59 'cause you're being properly oxygenated, 00:21:37.63\00:21:39.69 and ultimately this is a spiritual message 00:21:39.73\00:21:41.66 you can hear from the Holy Spirit, 00:21:41.70\00:21:43.03 when your brain is functioning, your blood is rich. 00:21:43.06\00:21:45.43 Ellen White talks a lot about that, 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.44 actually having rich healthy blood. 00:21:47.47\00:21:49.20 And the Bible says, 00:21:49.24\00:21:50.57 "The life of the flesh is in the blood." 00:21:50.61\00:21:51.94 Yes. 00:21:51.97\00:21:53.31 So all our curricular is Bible based, 00:21:53.34\00:21:54.68 Spirit of Prophecy infused, 00:21:54.71\00:21:56.31 and that's why this health message, 00:21:56.34\00:21:58.35 it's the entering wedge to people's hearts. 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.68 Absolutely. 00:22:00.72\00:22:02.05 You know, within ministry with such a global impact 00:22:02.08\00:22:05.69 and all of the things that you're doing, 00:22:05.72\00:22:08.66 do you ever find yourself getting discouraged? 00:22:08.69\00:22:12.49 Well, I have to say we do have an enemy. 00:22:12.53\00:22:15.16 And our theme verse is John 10:10, 00:22:15.20\00:22:18.27 that the thief comes only to kill steal and destroy. 00:22:18.30\00:22:22.30 And yet Jesus comes that we might have life 00:22:22.34\00:22:24.44 and have it abundantly. 00:22:24.47\00:22:25.81 Amen. 00:22:25.84\00:22:27.18 And, you know, we have to all of us 00:22:27.21\00:22:28.54 claim that promise every day, 00:22:28.58\00:22:29.91 claim the power of the Holy Spirit every day. 00:22:29.94\00:22:31.95 I do not feel enough to lead this ministry 00:22:31.98\00:22:35.25 and that thought can enter my mind 00:22:35.28\00:22:37.39 if I allow it every day. 00:22:37.42\00:22:39.82 But it's not about me. 00:22:39.85\00:22:42.19 It's not about Dr. Fred, even though he's way qualified, 00:22:42.22\00:22:44.99 he's a PhD, a nutritionist all his years of experience. 00:22:45.03\00:22:48.86 But it's not about us, 00:22:48.90\00:22:50.23 it's about the Holy Spirit working through us 00:22:50.27\00:22:52.60 and, you know, trainers, our trainers, they inspire me. 00:22:52.63\00:22:55.64 I get out of bed, it's eight hours earlier 00:22:55.67\00:22:57.74 in East Africa than where I live. 00:22:57.77\00:22:59.94 And, so I often wake up with text messages 00:22:59.97\00:23:02.61 about what's going on over there 00:23:02.64\00:23:04.28 and one of our trainers is Betty, 00:23:04.31\00:23:06.01 I say she's my twin. 00:23:06.05\00:23:08.38 We are the same age, with the same heart, 00:23:08.42\00:23:11.32 the same savior and she always says, 00:23:11.35\00:23:13.69 "Joy, time is short. 00:23:13.72\00:23:15.19 Jesus is coming. We've got to get to work." 00:23:15.22\00:23:17.79 So there's no time for discouragement. 00:23:17.83\00:23:20.13 You told me about a specific time 00:23:20.16\00:23:22.80 a while back about 00:23:22.83\00:23:24.73 you were watching something and that your power went out, 00:23:24.77\00:23:28.54 touch on that story? 00:23:28.57\00:23:29.90 Oh, goodness. It was so cool. 00:23:29.94\00:23:31.67 It was when the ministry is quite young and honestly, 00:23:31.71\00:23:34.51 I was feeling overwhelmed, like who am I 00:23:34.54\00:23:36.48 to be leading a ministry in Africa really. 00:23:36.51\00:23:39.08 And just a self doubt and everything, 00:23:39.11\00:23:42.38 and I was watching the 3ABN show 00:23:42.42\00:23:45.65 about how these ministry started. 00:23:45.69\00:23:47.76 Of mending broken people, yes. Exactly. 00:23:47.79\00:23:50.29 And Danny Shelton, he was saying how this area, 00:23:50.33\00:23:54.30 you know, it's in the middle of nowhere. 00:23:54.33\00:23:56.03 How am I gonna carry the message to the world? 00:23:56.06\00:23:58.63 And I'm like four hours north of here 00:23:58.67\00:24:00.50 in the middle of nowhere, 00:24:00.54\00:24:01.87 tiny little town, thinking, "Oh, my goodness, 00:24:01.90\00:24:04.64 God is giving me this vision of FARM STEW 00:24:04.67\00:24:08.18 that could reach the world. 00:24:08.21\00:24:09.84 How am I gonna do this?" 00:24:09.88\00:24:11.21 So I'm watching this YouTube video, 00:24:11.25\00:24:14.22 feeling like at the time kind of discouraged 00:24:14.25\00:24:17.62 and the power went out in my house. 00:24:17.65\00:24:20.39 And I'm watching this video feeling very inspired to seeing 00:24:20.42\00:24:22.96 how this little mustard seed of a ministry 00:24:22.99\00:24:24.79 was now reaching the world. 00:24:24.83\00:24:26.16 I watched 3ABN in Zimbabwe by the way. 00:24:26.19\00:24:27.83 Wow. 00:24:27.86\00:24:29.20 I watched it in Uganda. It's going over the world. 00:24:29.23\00:24:30.57 Yes, yes. 00:24:30.60\00:24:31.93 And the power went out, 00:24:31.97\00:24:33.30 the Wi-Fi should've have gone out, 00:24:33.34\00:24:34.90 the video should've stopped, 00:24:34.94\00:24:36.71 it kept going for another 40 minutes 00:24:36.74\00:24:38.57 so I could watch the entire documentary. 00:24:38.61\00:24:40.21 Wow. 00:24:40.24\00:24:41.58 And I know that was God just saying, 00:24:41.61\00:24:42.94 "Joy, I have this, you know, 00:24:42.98\00:24:45.58 there are other Adventist ministries like 3ABN, 00:24:45.61\00:24:48.55 I am the wind under their wings 00:24:48.58\00:24:50.39 and I can do it for you and for firms too as well." 00:24:50.42\00:24:53.12 Yeah, He's showing and that's so beautiful 00:24:53.15\00:24:56.46 because He's grabbing a hold of you 00:24:56.49\00:24:58.56 and saying, "You're my daughter 00:24:58.59\00:25:01.16 and I want you to carry this out. 00:25:01.20\00:25:03.53 I've given this to you to fulfill." 00:25:03.57\00:25:05.87 Amen. 00:25:05.90\00:25:07.40 So and He's working through you, 00:25:07.44\00:25:09.40 like every time I come in contact with you, 00:25:09.44\00:25:13.07 whether that's in ASI or GYC 00:25:13.11\00:25:16.85 or whatever the convention is. 00:25:16.88\00:25:18.61 As soon as you start talking about FARM STEW, 00:25:18.65\00:25:20.95 it's like your whole face just lights up. 00:25:20.98\00:25:23.59 Well, I love it. 00:25:23.62\00:25:24.95 It's a dream come true because as a nutritionist, 00:25:24.99\00:25:27.16 and I mean Dr. Fred I think had the same feeling 00:25:27.19\00:25:29.46 which is why we are so bonded in this. 00:25:29.49\00:25:31.06 Yes. 00:25:31.09\00:25:32.43 Because as a nutritionist, you wanted to do something. 00:25:32.46\00:25:34.90 You know that there's hungry children, 00:25:34.93\00:25:36.87 you know that there's people 00:25:36.90\00:25:38.67 not reaching their full potential. 00:25:38.70\00:25:40.74 And you wanna do something so much 00:25:40.77\00:25:42.30 and yet as one person you can't. 00:25:42.34\00:25:44.04 Yes. 00:25:44.07\00:25:45.44 But take the continent of Africa alone. 00:25:45.47\00:25:47.38 Sub-Saharan Africa, 00:25:47.41\00:25:49.14 we have eight million Seventh-day Adventist members. 00:25:49.18\00:25:52.58 That's huge. 00:25:52.61\00:25:53.95 Think about the potentiality of scale. 00:25:53.98\00:25:55.72 If we took this message 00:25:55.75\00:25:57.09 and it can transform people's lives. 00:25:57.12\00:25:59.05 Even in the refugee camps, one of the guys with the garden 00:25:59.09\00:26:01.69 that he was speaking about, Amon, our trainer, 00:26:01.72\00:26:05.29 one of the guys he'd trained, he said that his garden 00:26:05.33\00:26:07.96 has become evangelistic garden. 00:26:08.00\00:26:09.76 That's awesome. 00:26:09.80\00:26:11.13 He had been trying to do Bible studies, 00:26:11.17\00:26:12.53 people were not interested, 00:26:12.57\00:26:13.90 now they come to him, "What's going on? 00:26:13.94\00:26:15.57 Your kids look healthy, your garden's beautiful, 00:26:15.60\00:26:17.31 what's going on?" 00:26:17.34\00:26:18.67 So it's not just a physical message, 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.38 although that's important, Jesus heal people. 00:26:20.41\00:26:23.01 The spiritual message is going out too. 00:26:23.04\00:26:24.45 Yes. 00:26:24.48\00:26:25.81 And so you guys are meeting the needs of the people. 00:26:25.85\00:26:28.08 Speaking of meeting the needs, 00:26:28.12\00:26:29.62 what does FARM STEW need as an organization 00:26:29.65\00:26:33.05 to continue to flourish? 00:26:33.09\00:26:35.36 Well, do you want to share, Dr. Fred? 00:26:35.39\00:26:38.79 You know, it's very difficult to go international 00:26:38.83\00:26:44.13 when you're self supporting. 00:26:44.17\00:26:47.74 What we need is people to help us 00:26:47.77\00:26:51.07 spread this good news to the people 00:26:51.11\00:26:53.68 who are hurting right now because they need to be taught, 00:26:53.71\00:26:58.75 they need to be trained. 00:26:58.78\00:27:00.65 We are using the local people to train them 00:27:00.68\00:27:04.52 because they know their culture, 00:27:04.55\00:27:06.02 they know what they need. 00:27:06.05\00:27:07.56 So it's easier for them to meet their needs. 00:27:07.59\00:27:10.83 What about monetary needs? 00:27:10.86\00:27:12.56 Yeah, exactly. 00:27:12.59\00:27:13.93 We really...
