It's a pleasure to be with you. 00:00:48.08\00:00:50.08 Oh, it's so great to have you. Awesome. 00:00:50.11\00:00:52.15 There's a special reason that I said follower of Christ, 00:00:52.18\00:00:55.32 because a lot of our guests are followers of Christ, 00:00:55.35\00:00:59.65 but you have a special journey 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.12 and I really want our viewers to know where you've been, 00:01:02.16\00:01:05.43 and how God has taken you from place to place. 00:01:05.46\00:01:08.80 So let's talk first of all about where you were born 00:01:08.83\00:01:11.83 and how you were raised. 00:01:11.87\00:01:13.20 Where were you born? 00:01:13.23\00:01:14.57 I was born in Canada, actually. Oh, wow. 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.81 And my dad's a pastor. My mom is a teacher. 00:01:16.84\00:01:19.57 And two older brothers, the baby of the family. 00:01:19.61\00:01:22.31 And so we grew up in Western Canada. 00:01:22.34\00:01:25.11 And at a young age, I had a call to ministry, 00:01:25.15\00:01:28.12 I won my first person to Christ 00:01:28.15\00:01:30.32 doing community religious surveys, 00:01:30.35\00:01:32.05 knocking on doors at the age of 10. 00:01:32.09\00:01:34.72 And I started preaching at the age of 12 00:01:34.76\00:01:36.93 and I just have always had a desire 00:01:36.96\00:01:39.96 to follow the Lord, and to serve Him, 00:01:40.00\00:01:41.76 and to enter into pastoral ministry. 00:01:41.80\00:01:43.77 Now, you know, 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.13 what's interesting to me is that you're a PK 00:01:45.17\00:01:47.84 and a lot of times PKs kind of go off to the left a little bit 00:01:47.87\00:01:51.91 and then they come back and, you know, but... 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.51 And sometimes they don't, most of the time 00:01:54.54\00:01:56.21 they do come back at some point. 00:01:56.24\00:01:59.35 But it sounds as though you had a call early on. 00:01:59.38\00:02:04.79 And so did you ever have that period 00:02:04.82\00:02:06.99 where you strayed some and came back? 00:02:07.02\00:02:09.82 No, you know, and I tell people, 00:02:09.86\00:02:11.69 I don't have like some radical, you know, conversion story. 00:02:11.73\00:02:15.43 I just, I was baptized at the age of 10, 00:02:15.46\00:02:17.83 and I always just wanted to grow in Christ 00:02:17.87\00:02:21.27 and serve Him. 00:02:21.30\00:02:22.64 And I started preaching and evangelizing in high school 00:02:22.67\00:02:26.64 at Crawford Adventist Academy in Toronto, Canada. 00:02:26.68\00:02:29.01 I was Student Association pastor. 00:02:29.04\00:02:31.58 And then at 17, I went to Andrews University 00:02:31.61\00:02:34.15 and I did prayer conferences with Joe Ingle Meyer, 00:02:34.18\00:02:37.42 and Ruthie Jacobson, 00:02:37.45\00:02:38.79 and youth events with Jose Rojas, 00:02:38.82\00:02:41.06 and plan the international Pathfinder Camporee 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.86 with Ron Whitehead, 00:02:43.89\00:02:45.23 and, you know, went through college, 00:02:45.26\00:02:47.50 and university, 00:02:47.53\00:02:49.03 and did my bachelor's in religion and theology, 00:02:49.06\00:02:51.63 went back to the seminary, and did my masters, 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.90 and then I started pastoring, 00:02:54.94\00:02:57.01 and just been on the Lord's side. 00:02:57.04\00:02:58.77 Wow! 00:02:58.81\00:03:00.14 You're one of those who has known from early on 00:03:00.18\00:03:04.28 what he was called to do, 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.31 and then you just followed that which is really a blessing. 00:03:06.35\00:03:11.09 Because a lot of times, you know, like I said, 00:03:11.12\00:03:13.49 you can kind of get sidetracked, 00:03:13.52\00:03:15.92 but even in that God is merciful. 00:03:15.96\00:03:18.23 And He allows you to build experiences and things 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.93 that will contribute to whatever it is, 00:03:20.96\00:03:23.37 He has spirited you anyway. 00:03:23.40\00:03:24.73 That's right. So God is amazing. 00:03:24.77\00:03:26.87 So you went from being, 00:03:26.90\00:03:31.04 you know, the PK into basically into ministry. 00:03:31.07\00:03:35.18 Let's talk about how you evangelized at 10? 00:03:35.21\00:03:39.18 What happened at that particular, 00:03:39.21\00:03:42.52 when you went door to door? 00:03:42.55\00:03:44.29 What happened at that door? Yeah. 00:03:44.32\00:03:45.65 Well, our church said, my dad was a pastor, 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.26 we were doing community religious surveys. 00:03:47.29\00:03:49.79 And so we knocked on doors and we said, 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.53 "You know, hi, my name is Philip. 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.40 And, you know, 00:03:54.43\00:03:55.76 we'd like to just ask you a few questions. 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.30 We're doing a short community religious survey 00:03:57.33\00:03:58.97 in the neighborhood." 00:03:59.00\00:04:00.34 And we said, "Okay, you know, in your opinion, 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.50 is there a God? 00:04:02.54\00:04:03.87 You know, is there life after death? 00:04:03.91\00:04:05.24 Who is Jesus according to your understanding, 00:04:05.27\00:04:07.74 Son of God, Prophet, Messiah, not sure." 00:04:07.78\00:04:10.18 And at the very end, we said, "If you have the opportunity, 00:04:10.21\00:04:12.81 would you like to study the Bible more?" 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.85 And I remember this lady, she said, "Yes," 00:04:14.88\00:04:18.02 you know, there was an older lady, 00:04:18.05\00:04:19.49 and she was like, in her 70s. 00:04:19.52\00:04:21.42 And so I'm so excited. 00:04:21.46\00:04:23.46 And so they told me, well, you're the one 00:04:23.49\00:04:25.26 that signed her up, 00:04:25.29\00:04:26.63 you have to come back and give her Bible studies. 00:04:26.66\00:04:28.50 At ten? 00:04:28.53\00:04:29.86 So my Dad and I came back, he helped me, 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.67 and we gave her Bible studies, 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.10 and then she was ready to be baptized and I said, 00:04:33.13\00:04:35.24 "I want to be baptized as well." 00:04:35.27\00:04:37.31 And so we both got baptized together. 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.64 Oh, that's beautiful. At the age of 10. 00:04:39.67\00:04:41.34 That's beautiful. 00:04:41.38\00:04:42.78 So after you left school, 00:04:42.81\00:04:45.81 what did you do after you left college? 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.82 Yeah, after I left college, 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.22 I pastored in the Seattle, Washington area, 00:04:49.25\00:04:52.42 and was a social youth director of the Washington Conference. 00:04:52.45\00:04:55.46 And then I went to seminary and I worked with Dwight Nelson 00:04:55.49\00:04:58.43 as associate youth pastor at Pioneer Memorial Church. 00:04:58.46\00:05:01.63 And I worked with the Center for Youth Evangelism, 00:05:01.66\00:05:04.03 planning the Faith on Fire, Pathfinder Camporee 00:05:04.07\00:05:07.04 and coordinating that. 00:05:07.07\00:05:08.40 And then I got a call 00:05:08.44\00:05:09.94 from seminary to the Rocky Mountain Conference, 00:05:09.97\00:05:12.74 and I pastored there for five years, 00:05:12.77\00:05:14.68 I was associate youth director of the conference, 00:05:14.71\00:05:17.65 and then I got a call 00:05:17.68\00:05:19.05 to the Central States Conference. 00:05:19.08\00:05:21.35 And it was all in the Denver, Colorado area. 00:05:21.38\00:05:24.79 And I was a senior pastor of a large church there. 00:05:24.82\00:05:28.46 And then they also asked me to be 00:05:28.49\00:05:30.23 the communication director of the conference. 00:05:30.26\00:05:33.06 And so that's what I did. 00:05:33.09\00:05:35.66 And also it was in that time when I was a single pastor 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.30 for many years. 00:05:39.33\00:05:40.67 And, you know, 00:05:40.70\00:05:42.04 I used to walk around my apartment singing lonely, 00:05:42.07\00:05:44.31 I am so lonely I have no body 00:05:44.34\00:05:48.64 And one evening, 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.48 I had just finished doing communion service 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.01 at my church, New Year's Eve, 00:05:53.05\00:05:55.15 and it was the early days of Facebook, 00:05:55.18\00:05:57.19 the chat feature had just been introduced. 00:05:57.22\00:05:59.95 And, you know, someone popped up and said, 00:05:59.99\00:06:02.46 "Happy New Year." 00:06:02.49\00:06:03.83 And I said, "Happy New Year." 00:06:03.86\00:06:05.19 And they said, "How are you?" 00:06:05.23\00:06:06.56 In five minutes into the conversation? 00:06:06.59\00:06:07.93 She said, 00:06:07.96\00:06:09.30 "So what's a handsome guy like you doing single?" 00:06:09.33\00:06:11.20 And I said, "Well, you could give me your number 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.90 and find out." 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.27 And so she sent the number and I looked at it for about, 00:06:14.30\00:06:17.14 you know, 10 seconds. 00:06:17.17\00:06:18.51 And then I remembered Sister White said, 00:06:18.54\00:06:20.14 "The final movements will be rapid ones." 00:06:20.18\00:06:22.84 So I called her immediately on the phone. 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.35 And we talked from 10 o'clock that night 00:06:25.38\00:06:27.22 to 10 o'clock the next morning. 00:06:27.25\00:06:29.28 You talked for 12 hours? Yeah, we talked for 12 hours. 00:06:29.32\00:06:31.42 It's like a full time job. Oh, my goodness. 00:06:31.45\00:06:34.22 And the next morning, I called my mom. 00:06:34.26\00:06:35.99 And I said, I have found her, she's an angel. 00:06:36.02\00:06:39.96 And so we got married about two years later 00:06:40.00\00:06:43.47 at the Slagle Church, Willy, Anne Layn, 00:06:43.50\00:06:45.33 all of did our wedding from the General Conference. 00:06:45.37\00:06:48.07 Yes. So we're so excited. 00:06:48.10\00:06:50.81 And then after that, we... 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.38 Yeah, I pastored in Colorado Springs, 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.31 and was communication director of the conference there. 00:06:56.34\00:06:59.28 And we were praying that the Lord would open a door 00:06:59.31\00:07:01.78 because before we got married, my wife was teaching 00:07:01.82\00:07:04.82 as a teacher in Greater New York Conference. 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.99 But where we were, 00:07:07.02\00:07:08.36 that was not an Adventist school 00:07:08.39\00:07:09.82 where she could teach. 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.19 And so she was teaching in the public school. 00:07:11.23\00:07:12.76 So we were praying the Lord could open a door 00:07:12.79\00:07:14.56 for both of us to work for the church. 00:07:14.60\00:07:17.03 And so I got a call 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.03 from the East Central Africa Division 00:07:19.07\00:07:21.77 in Nairobi, Kenya, to Maxwell Adventist Academy. 00:07:21.80\00:07:25.37 And the call was for me to be the boys' dean, 00:07:25.41\00:07:27.91 and for my wife to be the principal 00:07:27.94\00:07:29.94 of the elementary school. 00:07:29.98\00:07:31.68 And so the first year we got the call was 2013, 00:07:31.71\00:07:35.82 and we turned it down. 00:07:35.85\00:07:37.19 We felt like the Lord still had more work 00:07:37.22\00:07:38.59 for us to do. 00:07:38.62\00:07:39.95 When the call came again, one year later in 2014, 00:07:39.99\00:07:42.92 and then we prayed about it, and we accepted the call. 00:07:42.96\00:07:46.23 And all my friends said, "You know, this is crazy. 00:07:46.26\00:07:48.96 How could you leave 00:07:49.00\00:07:50.40 as conference communication director 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.27 to go down to be boys' dean of an academy, you know." 00:07:52.30\00:07:56.50 But we felt the Lord leading in many ways in Kenya. 00:07:56.54\00:07:59.44 Wow! 00:07:59.47\00:08:00.81 So... 00:08:00.84\00:08:02.18 It's interesting to me that, you know, 00:08:02.21\00:08:04.51 you got a call as a missionary, basically, 00:08:04.55\00:08:09.38 to leave your comfort zone 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.32 and go over to another country with another culture. 00:08:12.35\00:08:16.76 Yes. How was that? 00:08:16.79\00:08:18.66 How was it leaving here and going to another culture? 00:08:18.69\00:08:22.46 That was quite an adjustment, 00:08:22.50\00:08:24.13 but it was a blessing to see the fervor and passion 00:08:24.17\00:08:27.80 for mission and ministry of the people over there 00:08:27.84\00:08:30.47 and to learn from other cultures. 00:08:30.51\00:08:32.87 It really opens your perspective, 00:08:32.91\00:08:35.01 you know, and broadens your horizon. 00:08:35.04\00:08:37.68 And, you know, here we baptize, 00:08:37.71\00:08:40.92 I think, I baptized hundred people 00:08:40.95\00:08:42.68 one time over here, 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.15 but we're baptizing thousands of people. 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.09 And there's such a hunger and thirst 00:08:46.12\00:08:48.09 for the Lord over there. 00:08:48.12\00:08:49.56 And I was boys' dean at the academy for a year. 00:08:49.59\00:08:53.16 And that was good 00:08:53.19\00:08:54.53 because it taught me how to say no, 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.60 you know, I'm a nice guy. 00:08:56.63\00:08:57.97 I don't like to say, no. 00:08:58.00\00:08:59.47 It taught me how say no. 00:08:59.50\00:09:00.84 And I got asked to help out at the division 00:09:00.87\00:09:05.01 with some communication projects. 00:09:05.04\00:09:06.57 They said, 00:09:06.61\00:09:07.94 "You were a communication director in the States, 00:09:07.98\00:09:09.31 can you help us with this." 00:09:09.34\00:09:10.78 And they had a project to do a video for GC session 00:09:10.81\00:09:14.08 and a deadline, and it kind of had fallen apart, 00:09:14.12\00:09:17.29 and so they asked me to take over, 00:09:17.32\00:09:18.72 and I wrote a script overnight, 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.72 and that was the video that was shown 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.56 in the 2015 General Conference session. 00:09:22.59\00:09:25.13 And after I produced that video, 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.36 then they called me to serve as the Special Assistant 00:09:27.40\00:09:30.50 to the President for the East Central Africa Division 00:09:30.53\00:09:33.50 in Nairobi, Kenya, 00:09:33.54\00:09:34.87 in charge of leadership development, 00:09:34.90\00:09:36.47 strategic planning, ASI, media, communications, 00:09:36.50\00:09:40.81 assessment, and few other things, 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.01 mission to the cities. 00:09:43.04\00:09:44.38 So all my friends said, "Wow, look at God. 00:09:44.41\00:09:47.58 You left communication director of a conference, 00:09:47.62\00:09:50.55 you went, "down," 00:09:50.59\00:09:52.72 but there's no up or down in God's eyes. 00:09:52.75\00:09:55.22 But you went to be a boys' dean. 00:09:55.26\00:09:57.19 And then you went from being boys' dean 00:09:57.23\00:09:59.19 to now assistant 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.60 to the president for the division." 00:10:00.63\00:10:02.13 And I served there for four years as a missionary. 00:10:02.16\00:10:04.73 That's incredible. 00:10:04.77\00:10:06.43 Look at how God works. 00:10:06.47\00:10:08.57 Now had you said, "No, that job is beneath me?" 00:10:08.60\00:10:12.57 Right? "I'm not doing that. 00:10:12.61\00:10:15.98 I'll do this, but I won't do that." 00:10:16.01\00:10:17.65 Right. 00:10:17.68\00:10:19.11 With God, it's go from here to here. 00:10:19.15\00:10:23.82 But it's not really down 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.39 because you're getting trained just like Joseph. 00:10:25.42\00:10:28.59 Right. 00:10:28.62\00:10:29.96 You know, I thought about Joseph, 00:10:29.99\00:10:31.33 as you were telling about your journey. 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.16 I'm thinking, you know, about Joseph 00:10:33.19\00:10:35.30 and how he went into slavery basically. 00:10:35.33\00:10:39.33 But he was being groomed for a higher position. 00:10:39.37\00:10:44.31 That's what God did. 00:10:44.34\00:10:45.67 And you were obedient. 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.41 What a lesson. 00:10:47.44\00:10:49.18 What a lesson there is, and just being obedient 00:10:49.21\00:10:52.15 and doing what God calls you to do. 00:10:52.18\00:10:54.08 Yeah. 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.45 And then being humble and just trusting the Lord. 00:10:55.48\00:10:57.32 Yes. Yes. 00:10:57.35\00:10:58.69 And it was an honor to serve, and I learned many things. 00:10:58.72\00:11:01.86 And I was able to finish my doctorate degree as well, 00:11:01.89\00:11:04.76 my doctorate ministry in communication and leadership 00:11:04.79\00:11:07.76 while I was there, 00:11:07.80\00:11:09.46 and they asked me to kind of 00:11:09.50\00:11:10.90 lead a leadership development on initiative 00:11:10.93\00:11:14.37 and train all the leaders in the division. 00:11:14.40\00:11:18.41 I was in charge of leadership development 00:11:18.44\00:11:20.01 for all the conference presidents, 00:11:20.04\00:11:21.64 union presidents, for the whole division. 00:11:21.68\00:11:23.85 And so it was a real honor to serve in that way. 00:11:23.88\00:11:27.15 And I developed actually a bunch of videos, 00:11:27.18\00:11:29.75 a bunch of resources on leadership development 00:11:29.78\00:11:33.59 which is available online now, on our division website, 00:11:33.62\00:11:37.53 and also on PhilipBaptiste.com, 00:11:37.56\00:11:40.90 with tips and resources to help you communicate 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.67 with clarity, with creativity, 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.53 and for change, and lasting impacts. 00:11:45.57\00:11:47.24 That's awesome. 00:11:47.27\00:11:48.60 And we have a sample of that video, 00:11:48.64\00:11:50.71 and we're going to show it. 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.84 Set it up for us this particular video? 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.28 This particular video is on how to mediate conflict. 00:11:55.31\00:11:58.18 And many times, you know, leaders are struggling 00:11:58.21\00:12:00.88 with how do I mediate a conflict, 00:12:00.92\00:12:02.35 people come to you and, you know, 00:12:02.38\00:12:04.05 two parties are at odds with each other, 00:12:04.09\00:12:06.09 and, you know, 00:12:06.12\00:12:07.46 they're expecting you to resolve it. 00:12:07.49\00:12:08.82 And what do you do? 00:12:08.86\00:12:10.19 And so this video, kind of, give some tips, 00:12:10.23\00:12:11.56 a brief introduction on how to mediate conflict. 00:12:11.59\00:12:13.73 That's awesome. Let's take a look. 00:12:13.76\00:12:15.26 Okay. 00:12:15.30\00:12:16.63 Welcome to communication that connects 00:12:16.67\00:12:21.60 where we share resources and strategies 00:12:21.64\00:12:23.91 to help you communicate with clarity, with creativity, 00:12:23.94\00:12:27.51 and for change, and lasting impact. 00:12:27.54\00:12:29.74 Today, I want to talk about how to mediate a conflict, 00:12:29.78\00:12:34.98 how to mediate a conflict. 00:12:35.02\00:12:37.02 So we talked about in the previous video, like, 00:12:37.05\00:12:40.36 what do you do when someone's upset at you? 00:12:40.39\00:12:43.02 How do you respond? 00:12:43.06\00:12:44.39 We talked about how do you respond 00:12:44.43\00:12:45.89 if you're the one that's upset at someone, 00:12:45.93\00:12:48.03 but suppose you're a leader, 00:12:48.06\00:12:49.56 and you have two parties that are upset at each other? 00:12:49.60\00:12:52.23 How do you mediate that conflict? 00:12:52.27\00:12:54.74 Well, I want to share an idea that I kind of got 00:12:54.77\00:12:57.87 from a conference president of mine. 00:12:57.91\00:12:59.47 Now, it was many years ago, 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.58 and there was someone frustrated at me, 00:13:01.61\00:13:04.05 and I was a little frustrated at them. 00:13:04.08\00:13:05.78 And he brought both of us as pastors into the office. 00:13:05.81\00:13:08.68 And he sat us down. 00:13:08.72\00:13:10.05 And he said, "I want you to write these two questions. 00:13:10.09\00:13:13.29 The first question is, why are we here? 00:13:13.32\00:13:16.56 Why are we here? 00:13:16.59\00:13:17.93 And the second question is, 00:13:17.96\00:13:19.33 what have I done to contribute to this problem?" 00:13:19.36\00:13:22.43 So why are we here? 00:13:22.46\00:13:23.80 And then what have I done to contribute to this problem? 00:13:23.83\00:13:26.20 And in writing those down, especially the second question, 00:13:26.23\00:13:29.50 what have I done to contribute to this problem, 00:13:29.54\00:13:32.04 all the things that you want to say 00:13:32.07\00:13:33.81 about the other person kind of fade away, 00:13:33.84\00:13:36.18 because now you have to focus on what you've done, 00:13:36.21\00:13:39.28 and it always takes two. 00:13:39.31\00:13:41.05 And so here's my tip for mediation. 00:13:41.08\00:13:43.39 Ever since that experience, I've grown, I've learned, 00:13:43.42\00:13:46.32 and I use this strategy 00:13:46.35\00:13:48.62 when I'm resolving conflicts with people is 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.06 sit people down, 00:13:51.09\00:13:52.43 and have them write those two questions, 00:13:52.46\00:13:54.83 you know, why are we here, 00:13:54.86\00:13:56.67 and then what have I done to contribute to this problem. 00:13:56.70\00:13:59.97 Then, when you're mediating, 00:14:00.00\00:14:01.40 you can use a technique that I've learned 00:14:01.44\00:14:03.94 from counselors and professionals 00:14:03.97\00:14:06.47 called the floor. 00:14:06.51\00:14:08.01 And so when you use the floor, you get a little object, 00:14:08.04\00:14:10.35 something flat, and you give it to the person that's speaking 00:14:10.38\00:14:14.38 and they're the speaker and then there's the listener. 00:14:14.42\00:14:17.29 It's called the speaker-listener technique. 00:14:17.32\00:14:19.29 So the speaker begins, 00:14:19.32\00:14:21.06 and he has to share using I words, 00:14:21.09\00:14:23.99 so I feel hurt, or I felt sad, 00:14:24.03\00:14:26.63 or I felt discouraged, or I felt disappointed. 00:14:26.66\00:14:29.00 And then the listener has to just act like a mirror 00:14:29.03\00:14:31.67 reflecting back. 00:14:31.70\00:14:33.03 So what I heard you say is that you feel hurt, 00:14:33.07\00:14:35.87 so you feel sad, or you feel disappointed. 00:14:35.90\00:14:38.44 And the goal of the listener is not to respond, 00:14:38.47\00:14:41.28 is not to say, "You're wrong, I disagree," 00:14:41.31\00:14:43.65 is just to listen. 00:14:43.68\00:14:45.01 Because remember, 00:14:45.05\00:14:46.38 the greatest gift you can give someone you love, 00:14:46.41\00:14:48.48 is to listen. 00:14:48.52\00:14:49.85 And so you just have them exchange back and forth 00:14:49.88\00:14:52.59 and listen to each other. 00:14:52.62\00:14:54.09 You know, the Bible says, "Come, let us reason together." 00:14:54.12\00:14:57.79 And that's what this technique allows you to do 00:14:57.83\00:15:00.13 is to allow each party to share, to listen, 00:15:00.16\00:15:03.63 and to own, to actually own 00:15:03.67\00:15:05.83 what they've done to contribute to the problem. 00:15:05.87\00:15:08.37 And in doing that, hopefully, 00:15:08.40\00:15:10.24 you'll be able to help them come up with a solution. 00:15:10.27\00:15:13.01 And in listening to each other, 00:15:13.04\00:15:14.58 in hearing each other's different point of view, 00:15:14.61\00:15:17.71 oftentimes, compromise can be achieved 00:15:17.75\00:15:20.75 and resolutions can be found. 00:15:20.78\00:15:23.69 Another tip for resolving conflicts 00:15:23.72\00:15:25.69 is just simply have people get out a piece of paper 00:15:25.72\00:15:28.56 and write 10 ideas, 00:15:28.59\00:15:30.66 brainstorm 10 tips for resolving this difference. 00:15:30.69\00:15:33.46 So if there's like a big conflict, 00:15:33.50\00:15:36.26 they can write down, 00:15:36.30\00:15:37.63 here's 10 ways that we can maybe resolve it. 00:15:37.67\00:15:40.14 And so I want it this way, you want it that way, 00:15:40.17\00:15:42.77 we can brainstorm, 00:15:42.80\00:15:44.14 and then each person can share their list, 00:15:44.17\00:15:45.94 and hopefully they can come up with something 00:15:45.97\00:15:47.68 that can work for everyone. 00:15:47.71\00:15:49.88 That was really good, really good. 00:15:49.91\00:15:53.01 What a blessing to have that resource available, 00:15:53.05\00:15:56.32 so that if someone is dealing with conflict 00:15:56.35\00:15:59.42 within their own organization, or whatever, 00:15:59.45\00:16:01.92 they can watch that and get some ideas 00:16:01.96\00:16:03.46 as to how to resolve it. 00:16:03.49\00:16:05.09 What other kinds of videos do you have on your website? 00:16:05.13\00:16:08.00 So there's tips for writing sermons, 00:16:08.03\00:16:09.70 tips for giving Bible studies, tips for hospital visitations, 00:16:09.73\00:16:13.03 tips for communication, 00:16:13.07\00:16:15.57 tips for, you know, writing news stories, 00:16:15.60\00:16:18.94 tips for sharing board meetings, 00:16:18.97\00:16:20.94 all kind of practical tips for leaders, 00:16:20.98\00:16:23.75 for ministry people, 00:16:23.78\00:16:25.38 for anyone that wants to just be involved in mission. 00:16:25.41\00:16:29.08 That's awesome. 00:16:29.12\00:16:30.45 And your website again is... 00:16:30.49\00:16:32.45 PhilipBaptiste.com. PhilipBaptiste.com. 00:16:32.49\00:16:36.83 Yeah. Yeah. And it's free. 00:16:36.86\00:16:38.56 And it's free. 00:16:38.59\00:16:39.93 Just like God's love is free. That's right. 00:16:39.96\00:16:41.50 You can't get any better than free. 00:16:41.53\00:16:42.93 I mean, that's amazing. 00:16:42.96\00:16:44.57 That's awesome. So you have the website. 00:16:44.60\00:16:47.90 And you're using that as part of your ASI... 00:16:47.94\00:16:53.78 Yes. Whole niche. 00:16:53.81\00:16:55.28 Let's talk about ASI. 00:16:55.31\00:16:56.64 What is it? How did it get started? 00:16:56.68\00:16:58.91 How did you get involved with it? 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.28 Yes. So that's a great question. 00:17:00.32\00:17:01.65 So when I was at the East Central Africa Division, 00:17:01.68\00:17:04.49 Ted Wilson, our GC president 00:17:04.52\00:17:06.09 said to each division president, 00:17:06.12\00:17:08.32 he said, "I wanted you to invite you to ASI. 00:17:08.36\00:17:11.29 And I want you to bring someone with you 00:17:11.33\00:17:13.19 that can be in charge of ASI from your division." 00:17:13.23\00:17:16.63 And so I was the one selected from our division 00:17:16.67\00:17:19.73 to lead ASI. 00:17:19.77\00:17:21.10 And so we went to that first ASI convention. 00:17:21.14\00:17:24.04 Then we had Steve Dickman and Kyle Allen come 00:17:24.07\00:17:26.81 and do training in our division. 00:17:26.84\00:17:28.54 And I actually successfully launched ASI 00:17:28.58\00:17:31.48 in that part of African, 00:17:31.51\00:17:32.85 we started ASI and we did some wonderful things with ASI 00:17:32.88\00:17:36.25 in the eastern part of Africa. 00:17:36.28\00:17:37.85 And because of my work there, 00:17:37.89\00:17:39.52 I was called to serve at the North American Division. 00:17:39.55\00:17:42.82 But actually, 00:17:42.86\00:17:44.19 before I was called to serve at the North American Division, 00:17:44.23\00:17:46.53 we received the call 00:17:46.56\00:17:48.36 from the Central States Conference 00:17:48.40\00:17:50.23 and from Union College to be a pastor in a church, 00:17:50.27\00:17:55.67 in Lincoln, Nebraska. 00:17:55.70\00:17:57.61 And also... 00:17:57.64\00:17:58.97 So to come from Nairobi, Kenya... 00:17:59.01\00:18:00.34 To come from Nairobi, Kenya... 00:18:00.38\00:18:01.71 Back to the States. 00:18:01.74\00:18:03.08 Back to the States to pastor and to be an adjunct professor 00:18:03.11\00:18:04.88 at Union College in the theology department. 00:18:04.91\00:18:07.12 And we prayerfully accepted that call after four years 00:18:07.15\00:18:10.02 of General Conference mission service. 00:18:10.05\00:18:11.49 And all my friends said, "You're crazy, Philip. 00:18:11.52\00:18:14.09 You're leaving, 00:18:14.12\00:18:15.46 you're like the vice president of the division 00:18:15.49\00:18:17.03 and you're going down to pastoring." 00:18:17.06\00:18:19.83 And I said, listen, I tell young people this, 00:18:19.86\00:18:21.70 you know, "God's call on our life 00:18:21.73\00:18:24.33 is a call to be faithful, it's not a call to position. 00:18:24.37\00:18:27.37 It's a call to faithfulness, wherever He places you, 00:18:27.40\00:18:30.57 bloom where you're planted, be faithful, 00:18:30.61\00:18:32.57 wherever He calls you to serve." 00:18:32.61\00:18:33.94 So we accepted that call. 00:18:33.98\00:18:35.31 And we went to Lincoln, Nebraska, 00:18:35.34\00:18:37.15 we move there, and we are excited. 00:18:37.18\00:18:39.18 And I helped that church, I needed a church building. 00:18:39.21\00:18:42.22 I helped them kind of find some church building solutions 00:18:42.25\00:18:45.19 that they can pursue. 00:18:45.22\00:18:46.55 And in three months, 00:18:46.59\00:18:47.92 we got a call after three months to serve 00:18:47.96\00:18:50.33 at the North American Division, 00:18:50.36\00:18:51.73 where they asked me to be 00:18:51.76\00:18:53.09 the departmental director for ASI 00:18:53.13\00:18:54.76 and the secretary treasurer for ASI. 00:18:54.80\00:18:57.17 And so all my friends said, 00:18:57.20\00:18:58.53 "Wow, now you're moving from pastoring 00:18:58.57\00:19:01.60 all the way to the division." 00:19:01.64\00:19:03.30 And it just goes to show, don't chase position, 00:19:03.34\00:19:05.57 just chase the relationship with God and follow Him. 00:19:05.61\00:19:08.88 See, now that is to me, that is a very key point. 00:19:08.91\00:19:14.45 Don't chase the position, chase after God. 00:19:14.48\00:19:17.12 That's it. 00:19:17.15\00:19:18.49 Follow Him. Be faithful to Him. 00:19:18.52\00:19:20.06 He's going to show you 00:19:20.09\00:19:21.42 if you know that He's telling you to... 00:19:21.46\00:19:24.59 Okay, so you're here. 00:19:24.63\00:19:26.16 And it looks like you're taking a position here. 00:19:26.19\00:19:28.36 If God is telling you to do it, He's going to restore you. 00:19:28.40\00:19:32.20 He's training you right here. 00:19:32.23\00:19:33.57 That's it. He's preparing you. 00:19:33.60\00:19:34.94 He's preparing you. That's it. 00:19:34.97\00:19:36.30 And so, what you're saying is so important 00:19:36.34\00:19:39.07 for our young people to hear, don't chase the position, 00:19:39.11\00:19:43.35 follow after God and be faithful to His calling, 00:19:43.38\00:19:47.02 and just let Him be God, let Him do what He does. 00:19:47.05\00:19:50.12 So ASI, now what is it? 00:19:50.15\00:19:53.09 A lot of people don't know what ASI is. 00:19:53.12\00:19:55.39 What is ASI? 00:19:55.42\00:19:56.76 ASI is department of the North American Division 00:19:56.79\00:19:59.26 and it stands for 00:19:59.29\00:20:00.63 Adventist-Layman Services and Industries. 00:20:00.66\00:20:03.37 And they just left out the L. 00:20:03.40\00:20:04.73 And... 00:20:04.77\00:20:06.10 Yeah. 00:20:06.13\00:20:07.47 You always gonna get confused like Adventist Layman, 00:20:07.50\00:20:09.17 but where's the L in ASI? 00:20:09.20\00:20:10.54 Well, Adventist and layman it's like one word, together, 00:20:10.57\00:20:13.07 it's like hyphenated, Adventist-layman meaning, 00:20:13.11\00:20:15.58 meeting Adventist Church members, 00:20:15.61\00:20:17.38 Adventist lay people, and services and industries. 00:20:17.41\00:20:21.08 And so ASI is about mobilizing lay business people, 00:20:21.12\00:20:25.65 lay ministry people, 00:20:25.69\00:20:27.02 and lay professionals to engage in our mission 00:20:27.06\00:20:30.13 of sharing Christ in the marketplace. 00:20:30.16\00:20:32.76 And so we do that through the ASI convention 00:20:32.79\00:20:35.96 which we have every year. 00:20:36.00\00:20:37.50 And we also do that through union chapters. 00:20:37.53\00:20:40.14 Each union has a chapter and they have meetings. 00:20:40.17\00:20:44.01 And then we have special tools that we've developed, 00:20:44.04\00:20:47.08 and designed to mobilize people to engage, 00:20:47.11\00:20:49.58 and sharing Christ in the marketplace. 00:20:49.61\00:20:51.41 That's incredible. 00:20:51.45\00:20:52.81 And how long have you been with ASI? 00:20:52.85\00:20:54.62 So I've been working, 00:20:54.65\00:20:56.25 you know, for the past three years, 00:20:56.28\00:20:57.89 in the East Central Africa Division, 00:20:57.92\00:21:00.26 but officially with the ASI North American Division, 00:21:00.29\00:21:03.76 I started in August of 2018. Okay. 00:21:03.79\00:21:07.23 And what are some of the programs 00:21:07.26\00:21:10.63 that come under the umbrella of ASI, 00:21:10.67\00:21:13.40 because ASI has so many facets to it. 00:21:13.44\00:21:17.41 It's a wonderful, wonderful program. 00:21:17.44\00:21:21.11 It really is. It is. 00:21:21.14\00:21:22.48 So tell us some of the programs 00:21:22.51\00:21:25.45 that fall under the umbrella of ASI. 00:21:25.48\00:21:27.32 So some of the special projects 00:21:27.35\00:21:29.38 which ASI has initiated, 00:21:29.42\00:21:31.12 and you probably may have heard of is 00:21:31.15\00:21:33.02 one of my favorite is called 00:21:33.05\00:21:34.56 the New Beginnings evangelistic series. 00:21:34.59\00:21:37.59 And it was developed about 20 years ago, 00:21:37.63\00:21:40.13 and New Beginnings, it's evangelism in a box. 00:21:40.16\00:21:43.03 And so it's designed for lay person, 00:21:43.06\00:21:45.47 someone that's never preached before 00:21:45.50\00:21:47.37 to be able to just use this tool. 00:21:47.40\00:21:49.17 It comes with 26 sermons. 00:21:49.20\00:21:51.41 Mark Finley wrote the sermons, and PowerPoint presentations, 00:21:51.44\00:21:55.14 and you know, the way it's done, 00:21:55.18\00:21:56.68 I've preached it in several countries 00:21:56.71\00:21:58.28 around the world, in Rwanda, in Belize, 00:21:58.31\00:22:00.88 in Brazil. 00:22:00.92\00:22:02.25 And the way it's done is that the script is right there. 00:22:02.28\00:22:06.05 So you can just read the script. 00:22:06.09\00:22:08.06 And we had a 12-year-old in Rwanda, 00:22:08.09\00:22:10.36 and he baptized like 500 people just reading the script 00:22:10.39\00:22:13.66 from the sermons. 00:22:13.70\00:22:15.03 And so it's designed for anyone, 00:22:15.06\00:22:16.53 it's saying anyone can be minister, 00:22:16.56\00:22:18.83 can be an evangelist, God's call is for everyone. 00:22:18.87\00:22:21.97 And we've also developed more recently, just actually, 00:22:22.00\00:22:25.64 this past week, we had delivered 00:22:25.67\00:22:28.21 our first shipment of 7,500 picture rolls. 00:22:28.24\00:22:32.65 And you know when you were in Sabbath school, 00:22:32.68\00:22:34.38 they had those picture rolls, and you learned about Jesus. 00:22:34.42\00:22:37.62 And so we were preaching, 00:22:37.65\00:22:39.49 we baptized 100,000 people in Rwanda. 00:22:39.52\00:22:42.36 And Ted Wilson, Nancy Wilson were there, 00:22:42.39\00:22:44.39 and so many people were preaching 00:22:44.43\00:22:46.36 simultaneously 3,000 evangelistic series 00:22:46.39\00:22:49.36 at the same time. 00:22:49.40\00:22:50.77 And we realized that many people 00:22:50.80\00:22:53.23 had PowerPoint presentations. 00:22:53.27\00:22:54.80 But where we were the power, the electricity went out. 00:22:54.84\00:22:59.57 And do you know that 00:22:59.61\00:23:00.94 there's 1.2 billion people in the world 00:23:00.98\00:23:03.71 that have either no access to electricity 00:23:03.75\00:23:06.05 or limited access to electricity. 00:23:06.08\00:23:08.18 And so what ASI has done is 00:23:08.22\00:23:10.42 we've developed these picture rolls 00:23:10.45\00:23:12.25 where we've taken these same 26 New Beginning sermons 00:23:12.29\00:23:15.99 and we've put them in beautiful attractive picture roll form 00:23:16.02\00:23:19.36 and you can use it as a tool to preach around the world. 00:23:19.39\00:23:24.23 But you can find out more about that at picturerolls.org. 00:23:24.27\00:23:28.40 And then there's project funding 00:23:28.44\00:23:29.80 that's available as well. 00:23:29.84\00:23:31.17 So if you are a church, if you have a ministry, 00:23:31.21\00:23:33.74 if you're a person with a passion for Christ, 00:23:33.78\00:23:36.98 or for sharing His love with others, 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.58 or people that are less fortunate, 00:23:39.61\00:23:41.32 you can go to asiministries.org\projects 00:23:41.35\00:23:45.72 or click on projects, 00:23:45.75\00:23:47.36 and you can find out about project funding, 00:23:47.39\00:23:49.86 our deadline is every December. 00:23:49.89\00:23:51.86 So at each ASI convention, 00:23:51.89\00:23:53.80 we pick up an offering for special projects 00:23:53.83\00:23:57.10 and at our last convention 00:23:57.13\00:23:59.13 that offering was divided among over 40 different projects, 00:23:59.17\00:24:04.07 different ministries were able to benefit. 00:24:04.11\00:24:06.37 Our goal for the offering was 1.4 million 00:24:06.41\00:24:09.28 and we raised 1.8 million. 00:24:09.31\00:24:11.91 And I'm happy to say that 3ABN... 00:24:11.95\00:24:13.28 In one offering. Was a recipient of our. 00:24:13.31\00:24:15.65 Yes, praise the Lord. 00:24:15.68\00:24:17.42 Yes. Yes. Not the 1.4. 00:24:17.45\00:24:19.72 Not the 1.4, you are one of the 40 millions... 00:24:19.75\00:24:22.36 Praise the Lord. 00:24:22.39\00:24:23.73 And you know that's such a blessing 00:24:23.76\00:24:25.09 because ministries need help. 00:24:25.13\00:24:27.46 That's right. 00:24:27.50\00:24:28.83 All of these ministries rely upon donations. 00:24:28.86\00:24:33.03 And so to get a donation 00:24:33.07\00:24:36.60 from a group like ASI and from you individual donors, 00:24:36.64\00:24:42.28 I mean what a blessing that is 00:24:42.31\00:24:44.61 because we in order to function you have to have money, 00:24:44.65\00:24:47.72 that's the bottom line. 00:24:47.75\00:24:49.12 So, ASI, make sure that there are certain ministries 00:24:49.15\00:24:54.19 that you sponsor each year 00:24:54.22\00:24:56.36 and if you have a ministry, you can apply. 00:24:56.39\00:24:59.79 Apply for funding. Right. 00:24:59.83\00:25:01.46 How would they do that? 00:25:01.50\00:25:02.83 So they would go to asiministries.org, 00:25:02.86\00:25:04.87 and click under projects. 00:25:04.90\00:25:06.63 There's an application form right there 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.77 that you can fill out. 00:25:08.80\00:25:10.14 Before filling out the application form, 00:25:10.17\00:25:11.61 I recommend watching the video it says, "Watch video, " 00:25:11.64\00:25:14.84 most people don't watch it, 00:25:14.88\00:25:16.21 it's like a small video by Herald Lance. 00:25:16.24\00:25:19.25 But it has an hour video on tips 00:25:19.28\00:25:22.22 for how to like better increase your chances 00:25:22.25\00:25:24.99 of your application being approved. 00:25:25.02\00:25:27.46 So if you watch that video that can really help you 00:25:27.49\00:25:29.82 in filling it out. 00:25:29.86\00:25:31.39 Nice. 00:25:31.43\00:25:32.76 Kind of a little tutorial essay how to push you, 00:25:32.79\00:25:34.96 boost you up in the line. 00:25:35.00\00:25:36.33 That's right. 00:25:36.36\00:25:38.63 That's awesome. Yeah. 00:25:38.67\00:25:40.00 So what would you like our viewers to know about ASI, 00:25:40.04\00:25:45.71 those who are not familiar with it? 00:25:45.74\00:25:47.48 I would like them to know that, you know, 00:25:47.51\00:25:49.94 ASI is specifically for, you know, church members. 00:25:49.98\00:25:54.55 It's not for like pastors 00:25:54.58\00:25:56.48 or people that are employed by the church. 00:25:56.52\00:25:58.65 We like to say, 00:25:58.69\00:26:00.02 if your institution is in the Adventist Church yearbook, 00:26:00.06\00:26:03.43 then, you know, you can partner with ASI. 00:26:03.46\00:26:06.80 But in terms of becoming ASI member, 00:26:06.83\00:26:09.66 you need to be a lay person. 00:26:09.70\00:26:11.53 And, you know, you can become an ASI member. 00:26:11.57\00:26:14.94 In fact, we have something new called young professionals. 00:26:14.97\00:26:17.61 And we just started that and that membership 00:26:17.64\00:26:19.61 is only $25 for the year. 00:26:19.64\00:26:21.94 And if you're 18 to 35, and you're in college, 00:26:21.98\00:26:24.71 and you're studying, or you know, 00:26:24.75\00:26:26.51 you're a young up and coming professional entrepreneur, 00:26:26.55\00:26:29.68 or even a nurse, or doctor, you can join that way. 00:26:29.72\00:26:33.72 And then there's a professional membership. 00:26:33.76\00:26:35.52 That's if you are, say you're a doctor, a lawyer, 00:26:35.56\00:26:38.46 and you're like the owner of a practice, 00:26:38.49\00:26:40.33 you would qualify for professional membership. 00:26:40.36\00:26:42.83 Or if you, maybe you're not the owner of the practice, 00:26:42.86\00:26:45.33 but you work in the practice, you're an associate, 00:26:45.37\00:26:47.74 then you can qualify for an associate membership. 00:26:47.77\00:26:50.11 Or if you're an entrepreneur, 00:26:50.14\00:26:52.14 you can qualify for business and nonprofit membership 00:26:52.17\00:26:55.58 or for profit membership, 00:26:55.61\00:26:57.81 or your organization can qualify for membership. 00:26:57.85\00:27:00.68 So there's various ways, 00:27:00.72\00:27:02.05 you could find that out asiministries.org, 00:27:02.08\00:27:03.99 and just click under membership, 00:27:04.02\00:27:05.69 and there's the application right there, 00:27:05.72\00:27:07.76 and all the information is there for you. 00:27:07.79\00:27:09.96 That's awesome. 00:27:09.99\00:27:11.33 Thank you so much for being with us. 00:27:11.36\00:27:12.96 Absolutely. 00:27:12.99\00:27:14.33 You have given us a really good information. 00:27:14.36\00:27:15.70 And it's so good to see 00:27:15.73\00:27:17.70 how God has led you all these years 00:27:17.73\00:27:20.87 from where you were to where you are now. 00:27:20.90\00:27:24.04 Yes.
