all about where you were born

I was born in
Canada, actually. Oh, wow.

And my dad's a
pastor. My mom is a teacher.

And two older brothers,
the baby of the family.

And so we grew up
in Western Canada.

And at a young age, I
had a call to ministry,

I won my first person to Christ

doing community
religious surveys,

knocking on
doors at the age of 10.

And I started
preaching at the age of 12

and I just have
always had a desire

to follow the
Lord, and to serve Him,

and to enter into
pastoral ministry.

Now, you know,

what's interesting to
me is that you're a PK

and a lot of times PKs kind of
go off to the left a little bit

and then they come

don't, most of the time

But it sounds as though
you had a call early on.

baptized at the age of 10,

wanted to grow in Christ

and evangelizing in high school

at Crawford Adventist
Academy in Toronto, Canada.

I was Student

And then at 17, I
went to Andrews University

and I did prayer conferences
with Joe Ingle Meyer,

and youth
events with Jose Rojas,

and plan the international
Pathfinder Camporee

and, you know,
went through college,

and university,

and did my bachelor's
in religion and theology,

seminary, and did my masters,

and then I started pastoring,

and just been
on the Lord's side.

you evangelized at 10?

What happened
at that particular,

when you went door to door?

Well, our church
said, my dad was a pastor,

we were doing
community religious surveys.

And so we knocked
on doors and we said,

"You know, hi,

we'd like to just
ask you a few questions.

We're doing a short

in the neighborhood."

And we said, "Okay,
you know, in your opinion,

And at the very end, we said,
"If you have the opportunity,

study the Bible more?"

And I remember this
lady, she said, "Yes,"

you know, there
was an older lady,

and she was like, in her 70s.

And so I'm so excited.

And so they told
me, well, you're the one

that signed her up,

you have to come back
and give her Bible studies.

So my Dad and I
came back, he helped me,

and then she was ready
to be baptized and I said,

at Pioneer Memorial Church.

And I worked with the
Center for Youth Evangelism,

planning the Faith on
Fire, Pathfinder Camporee

and coordinating that.

And then I got a call

from seminary to the
Rocky Mountain Conference,

and I pastored
there for five years,

I was associate youth
director of the conference,

and then I got a call
00:05:17.68\00:05:19.05
to the Central
States Conference.

And it was all in the
Denver, Colorado area.

And I was a senior
pastor of a large church there.

And then they
also asked me to be

the communication
director of the conference.

And so that's what I did.

And also it was in that
time when I was a single pastor

for many years.

I used to walk around my
apartment singing lonely,

I am so lonely I have no body

And one evening,

I had just finished
doing communion service

at my church, New Year's Eve,

and it was the
early days of Facebook,

the chat feature had
just been introduced.

And, you know,
someone popped up and said,

"Happy New Year."

And I said, "Happy New Year."

And they said, "How are you?"

In five minutes
into the conversation?

She said,

"So what's a handsome
guy like you doing single?"

And I said, "Well, you
could give me your number

and find out."

And so she sent the number
and I looked at it for about,

you know, 10 seconds.

And then I
remembered Sister White said,

So I called her
immediately on the phone.

And we talked from
10 o'clock that night

Yeah, we talked for 12 hours.

It's like a full
time job. Oh, my goodness.

And the next
morning, I called my mom.

And I said, I have
found her, she's an angel.

And so we got
married about two years later

at the Slagle

all of did our wedding
from the General Conference.

And then after that, we...

Yeah, I pastored
in Colorado Springs,

and was communication director
of the conference there.

And we were praying that
the Lord would open a door

because before we got
married, my wife was teaching

as a teacher in
Greater New York Conference.

But where we were,

that was not an Adventist school

where she could teach.

And so she was
teaching in the public school.

So we were praying
the Lord could open a door

for both of us to
work for the church.

And so I got a call

from the East
Central Africa Division

in Nairobi, Kenya, to
Maxwell Adventist Academy.

And the call was for
me to be the boys' dean,
00:07:25.41\00:07:27.91
and for my wife
to be the principal
00:07:27.94\00:07:29.94
of the elementary school.
00:07:29.98\00:07:31.68
And so the first year
we got the call was 2013,

and we turned it down.

We felt like the
Lord still had more work

for us to do.

When the call came
again, one year later in 2014,

and then we prayed about
it, and we accepted the call.

And all my friends said,
"You know, this is crazy.

How could you leave

to go down to be boys'
dean of an academy, you know."

But we felt the Lord
leading in many ways in Kenya.

It's interesting
to me that, you know,

you got a call as a
missionary, basically,

to leave your comfort zone

and go over to another
country with another culture.

How was it leaving here
and going to another culture?

That was quite an adjustment,

but it was a blessing to
see the fervor and passion

of the people over there

and to learn
from other cultures.

It really opens

thousands of people.

a hunger and thirst

for the Lord over there.

And I was boys' dean
at the academy for a year.

And that was good

because it
taught me how to say no,

you know, I'm a nice guy.

I don't like to say, no.

It taught me how say no.

And I got asked to
help out at the division

with some
communication projects.

They said,

and a deadline, and it
kind of had fallen apart,

and so they
asked me to take over,

and I wrote a script overnight,

and that was the

then they called me to

So all my friends
said, "Wow, look at God.

or down in God's eyes.

four years as a missionary.

an idea that I kind of got

from a conference
president of mine.

Now, it was many years ago,

someone frustrated at me,

and I was a little
frustrated at them.

And he brought both of us
as pastors into the office.

And he sat us down.

And he said, "I want you
to write these two questions.

The first question
is, why are we here?

contribute to this problem?"
