Okay. 00:04:16.58\00:04:17.92 So you play by ear and you read music? 00:04:17.95\00:04:21.99 Yes, that's right. 00:04:22.02\00:04:23.36 Wow. 00:04:23.39\00:04:24.73 And which one came first 00:04:24.76\00:04:26.09 because I know that you said 00:04:26.13\00:04:27.46 that like you used to listen to the radio 00:04:27.50\00:04:29.50 and people in church 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.13 and you wanted to be able to play 00:04:31.17\00:04:33.34 what they were playing. 00:04:33.37\00:04:35.14 Were you playing by ear then or were you... 00:04:35.17\00:04:39.27 Did you get their sheet music and learn that way? 00:04:39.31\00:04:42.34 For me they happened sort of simultaneously. 00:04:42.38\00:04:45.65 Okay. 00:04:45.68\00:04:47.85 I would try to play everything by ear first, 00:04:47.88\00:04:50.32 especially before it was a piece 00:04:50.35\00:04:51.69 that I heard my sisters play. 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.05 So I will say it, I figure out what the key is from the score, 00:04:53.09\00:04:56.62 but there was always a temptation 00:04:56.66\00:04:57.99 to work it out myself. 00:04:58.03\00:04:59.59 So it took some doing for me to discipline myself 00:04:59.63\00:05:03.63 and actually try to play it from the score 00:05:03.67\00:05:05.93 as it was written. 00:05:05.97\00:05:07.67 And I saw value in that, you know. 00:05:07.70\00:05:10.81 You can do stuff by ear 00:05:10.84\00:05:12.97 and I said this to any talented musician, 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.81 there are some things that you just miss 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.21 if you don't get some music education. 00:05:17.25\00:05:20.85 So I see them as, you know, very important to produce 00:05:20.88\00:05:26.65 what you want to produce. 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.02 Got you. Got you. Yeah. 00:05:28.06\00:05:29.49 And how do you 00:05:29.52\00:05:32.16 tie in the music with evangelism? 00:05:32.19\00:05:36.67 Well, this is something that I kind of consolidated 00:05:36.70\00:05:40.50 the last several years of my life. 00:05:40.54\00:05:42.17 I always knew that... 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.37 I always had a sense that music was a powerful tool 00:05:44.41\00:05:48.48 for worship, not just for worship, however, 00:05:48.51\00:05:50.91 but for bringing people, 00:05:50.95\00:05:52.61 softening their hearts to receive the gospel. 00:05:52.65\00:05:56.89 But in recent years, 00:05:56.92\00:06:00.42 I discovered Christ method of reaching people. 00:06:00.46\00:06:03.73 Okay, and I did some missions overseas 00:06:03.76\00:06:06.26 for several years and that helped me 00:06:06.29\00:06:08.33 to practice using that method. 00:06:08.36\00:06:10.13 And I came to the conclusion a few years ago that, you know, 00:06:10.17\00:06:13.30 really, that's the only thing that gives true success 00:06:13.34\00:06:16.30 just like Ellen White says, you know. 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.31 So no matter how much music we give people, 00:06:18.34\00:06:21.71 it cannot replace Christ method of reaching them. 00:06:21.74\00:06:25.11 So I started to see that I needed to have my music 00:06:25.15\00:06:28.38 become some part of this method of reaching people. 00:06:28.42\00:06:33.79 So, yeah, music and missions 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.32 is all about how I use Christ method, 00:06:35.36\00:06:39.23 but then how I use my hat as a musician within that, 00:06:39.26\00:06:43.06 and how I use my hat as a missionary in music. 00:06:43.10\00:06:48.47 Got you. 00:06:48.50\00:06:49.84 All intertwined together, you know. 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.21 Yes. 00:06:51.24\00:06:52.57 And God, you know, 00:06:52.61\00:06:53.94 has led me on a journey of discovery of that. 00:06:53.98\00:06:56.51 Now, what are some of the places that you've been 00:06:56.54\00:07:00.32 in terms of doing mission work? 00:07:00.35\00:07:02.32 Right, okay, 00:07:02.35\00:07:03.69 so 00:07:03.72\00:07:06.39 South Korea. 00:07:06.42\00:07:07.86 Wow. 00:07:07.89\00:07:09.22 Yeah, when I was finishing my studies 00:07:09.26\00:07:10.59 at Andrews University, 00:07:10.63\00:07:13.50 I felt a call if you will to do overseas missions. 00:07:13.53\00:07:17.90 And I was interested in East Africa 00:07:17.93\00:07:22.30 and Thailand. 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.34 I can't remember why, right now. 00:07:24.37\00:07:26.78 And I didn't know anything about those countries, 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.34 but I prayed for a call and one came, 00:07:28.38\00:07:31.88 and it was very clear. 00:07:31.91\00:07:33.52 South Korea is where they wanted me to go. 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.68 And I further prayed, 00:07:35.72\00:07:38.29 so that things can work out for me to go there, 00:07:38.32\00:07:40.32 and they did work out for me to go there. 00:07:40.36\00:07:42.06 So I went there and I intended to stay for a year, 00:07:42.09\00:07:46.33 and I ended up staying for 14 years. 00:07:46.36\00:07:48.43 For 14 years? 00:07:48.46\00:07:50.63 Wow! That's right. 00:07:50.67\00:07:52.07 So that was a long time to be in that country. 00:07:52.10\00:07:56.20 But I would travel out every now and then 00:07:56.24\00:07:59.17 on holiday with other missionaries 00:07:59.21\00:08:00.88 to their countries. 00:08:00.91\00:08:02.24 I would see that people 00:08:02.28\00:08:03.61 coming from South Africa and Australia. 00:08:03.65\00:08:06.35 We had other missionaries in Thailand, in Japan, 00:08:06.38\00:08:08.88 and the Philippines. 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.25 So we would go visit them and they would come visit us, 00:08:10.29\00:08:13.25 you know. 00:08:13.29\00:08:14.66 So you got to experience a lot of different cultures? 00:08:14.69\00:08:17.86 I sure did. 00:08:17.89\00:08:19.23 Yeah. Yeah. 00:08:19.26\00:08:20.66 And so I would think that as a result of that, 00:08:20.70\00:08:24.17 you know, of that experience, experiencing 00:08:24.20\00:08:26.70 a lot of different cultures, 00:08:26.74\00:08:28.07 and how they live, and how they interact, 00:08:28.10\00:08:31.37 like that only goes to help you in the evangelism process 00:08:31.41\00:08:35.71 because you're able to reach so many more people. 00:08:35.74\00:08:39.11 I really have a thing for diversity. 00:08:39.15\00:08:43.32 You know, recently I ministered a church, 00:08:43.35\00:08:46.15 and it was a very diverse church 00:08:46.19\00:08:47.52 right here in the US, 00:08:47.56\00:08:49.32 and I loved it, 00:08:49.36\00:08:50.69 you know, because we had people 00:08:50.73\00:08:52.06 from all different countries present there. 00:08:52.09\00:08:55.00 I think it's something worth getting 00:08:55.03\00:08:56.93 really comfortable with, 00:08:56.97\00:08:58.50 you know, as Seventh-day Adventist, 00:08:58.53\00:09:00.04 the idea of diversity. 00:09:00.07\00:09:02.64 You know, and diversity 00:09:02.67\00:09:04.54 in terms of religious backgrounds as well. 00:09:04.57\00:09:06.31 I come from a Hindu ancestry, 00:09:06.34\00:09:08.61 and I lived in a Buddhist country 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.05 for 14 years, 00:09:10.08\00:09:11.41 and then I was in Saudi Arabia, 00:09:11.45\00:09:12.78 so I saw what Islam was like, you know, firsthand for a year. 00:09:12.81\00:09:19.39 And I think all of these things help us to be wiser 00:09:19.42\00:09:23.56 and more informed about how we befriend secular people 00:09:23.59\00:09:28.83 with a view for bringing them to Christ. 00:09:28.86\00:09:32.13 Yes, yes, 00:09:32.17\00:09:33.50 well, that is the ultimate goal in mind too, 00:09:33.54\00:09:35.74 yes. Yeah, absolutely. 00:09:35.77\00:09:37.51 And I think if we become more successful at that, 00:09:37.54\00:09:40.18 we will become more successful at embracing diversity, 00:09:40.21\00:09:44.15 even music. 00:09:44.18\00:09:45.51 Which is important because and then 00:09:45.55\00:09:46.88 heaven is going to be a very diverse place. 00:09:46.92\00:09:50.99 So, you know, we've been talking about your music, 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.76 and we actually have a clip of you playing the piano, 00:09:53.79\00:09:58.79 and I can't wait for our viewers to see it. 00:09:58.83\00:10:01.03 Let's go to that clip. 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.53 Wow, see I knew you were musically gifted 00:13:01.31\00:13:04.38 when I heard you play and now today. 00:13:04.41\00:13:07.12 So that was a beautiful song. 00:13:07.15\00:13:10.59 Thank you. You're welcome. 00:13:10.62\00:13:12.09 So with the music, with the evangelism, 00:13:12.12\00:13:15.26 you also do evangelism seminars. 00:13:15.29\00:13:18.86 Yeah, that's right. 00:13:18.89\00:13:20.36 What types of seminars are, like, what do they look like? 00:13:20.40\00:13:24.43 Okay. 00:13:24.47\00:13:25.97 The one that I'm most passionate 00:13:26.00\00:13:27.37 about lately is a seminar 00:13:27.40\00:13:31.01 about Christ's method of six steps. 00:13:31.04\00:13:33.41 You know, we've had this methodology 00:13:33.44\00:13:35.74 over 100 hundred years ago, Ellen White wrote about it. 00:13:35.78\00:13:38.11 We can find it in gospel work as 00:13:38.15\00:13:43.28 Ministry of Healing, okay. 00:13:43.32\00:13:45.75 Christ method of reaching people 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.49 is the one that will give true success. 00:13:47.52\00:13:48.96 Okay. 00:13:48.99\00:13:50.33 Now for our viewers that don't know 00:13:50.36\00:13:51.69 about Christ method, 00:13:51.73\00:13:53.06 Bacch, what is Christ's method? 00:13:53.09\00:13:54.50 Okay. 00:13:54.53\00:13:55.86 So it says that Christ mingled with people 00:13:55.90\00:13:58.50 as one desiring their good, and He met their needs, 00:13:58.53\00:14:03.51 He sympathized with them, and He won their confidence, 00:14:03.54\00:14:06.27 and then He bade them to follow Him. 00:14:06.31\00:14:08.44 So that's the method right there, okay? 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.88 So I started to realize that my music making 00:14:10.91\00:14:17.82 didn't necessarily mean that I was involved 00:14:17.85\00:14:21.19 with the great commission using Christ method. 00:14:21.22\00:14:24.73 And a lot of artists in the church, 00:14:24.76\00:14:26.53 we function as pianists or singers. 00:14:26.56\00:14:30.27 All we do, the technical work, audiovisual. 00:14:30.30\00:14:34.34 Okay. 00:14:34.37\00:14:35.70 But we don't necessarily get into people's lives. 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.91 Okay. 00:14:37.94\00:14:39.37 But in Christ method, which, you know, 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.54 everybody is called to do the great commission 00:14:41.58\00:14:43.55 as long as they're follower of Christ, 00:14:43.58\00:14:45.18 it's not an option, it's not a suggestion, 00:14:45.21\00:14:47.35 you have to, Christ asked us to do that. 00:14:47.38\00:14:49.32 Absolutely. 00:14:49.35\00:14:50.99 And so we could sometimes feel 00:14:51.02\00:14:52.39 that our music making is enough. 00:14:52.42\00:14:55.89 Well, I started to realize that I had to get involved 00:14:55.92\00:14:59.46 with these six steps. 00:14:59.49\00:15:01.00 But then I further discovered that as a musician, 00:15:01.03\00:15:05.37 being involved in these six steps 00:15:05.40\00:15:07.37 was crucial to my dependency on Christ 00:15:07.40\00:15:09.77 because when we are involved 00:15:09.80\00:15:11.77 in evangelism using Christ method, 00:15:11.81\00:15:14.11 we develop a kind of dependency on Him 00:15:14.14\00:15:16.54 that we can't develop otherwise, okay. 00:15:16.58\00:15:19.85 Now, that is extremely crucial for artists 00:15:19.88\00:15:24.09 because we spend our lives trying to craft, you know, 00:15:24.12\00:15:28.92 improve our craft, 00:15:28.96\00:15:30.66 and to get better at what we do. 00:15:30.69\00:15:32.79 And so it could lead to a lot of introspection, 00:15:32.83\00:15:36.46 a lot of... 00:15:36.50\00:15:39.90 Even arrogance, selfishness, you know, 00:15:39.93\00:15:44.31 so that there lot of proficient musicians 00:15:44.34\00:15:46.17 in the church, 00:15:46.21\00:15:47.54 but 00:15:47.58\00:15:48.91 they don't always have a heart for people, okay? 00:15:48.94\00:15:53.35 So my seminar is about how it's very important for people 00:15:53.38\00:15:57.49 who do audiovisual, you know, 00:15:57.52\00:15:59.82 people in the booth, in the sound booth, 00:15:59.85\00:16:01.86 and people who are on the instruments 00:16:01.89\00:16:04.16 and even on the praise team that... 00:16:04.19\00:16:06.93 Yes, that's great that we do that in the church, 00:16:06.96\00:16:08.73 but we also need to get involved 00:16:08.76\00:16:10.10 in Christ method of reaching people 00:16:10.13\00:16:12.03 because that is crucial to the characters 00:16:12.07\00:16:14.70 that we want to build for the kingdom, okay? 00:16:14.74\00:16:18.07 And in turn that informs our music making. 00:16:18.11\00:16:23.61 We become more intentional 00:16:23.65\00:16:25.35 about the kind of music language that we use, 00:16:25.38\00:16:27.65 musical language that we use, 00:16:27.68\00:16:29.18 about the kind of elements of music 00:16:29.22\00:16:30.69 that we want to put out there 00:16:30.72\00:16:32.45 because we don't want the music to betray 00:16:32.49\00:16:35.26 the very message we want to give. 00:16:35.29\00:16:36.62 Absolutely. 00:16:36.66\00:16:37.99 And, you know... 00:16:38.03\00:16:39.36 Nothing to contradict. 00:16:39.39\00:16:40.73 Exactly. Yes, absolutely. 00:16:40.76\00:16:42.10 You know, so I could be saying something lyrically, 00:16:42.13\00:16:43.47 but my music is actually not supporting that... 00:16:43.50\00:16:47.87 Or that message can totally be missed 00:16:48.27\00:16:52.27 because people are enjoying the physical response 00:16:52.31\00:16:58.01 or emotional response to the music, 00:16:58.05\00:17:00.45 and not really indulging in the message. 00:17:00.48\00:17:02.48 Now, emotions are legitimate part of human beings, okay? 00:17:02.52\00:17:06.82 And I think God values that 00:17:06.86\00:17:08.62 'cause He wouldn't have given it to us 00:17:08.66\00:17:10.43 if He didn't, okay? 00:17:10.46\00:17:12.36 But we have to see everything, and the big picture, right? 00:17:12.39\00:17:16.13 And on top of that, I also found that as a musician 00:17:16.16\00:17:20.40 with secular people, 00:17:20.44\00:17:22.30 they are always drawn to the idea 00:17:22.34\00:17:24.01 that you are a musician or you run sound in a venue, 00:17:24.04\00:17:29.04 or you are behind the camera. 00:17:29.08\00:17:30.95 So technical people 00:17:30.98\00:17:32.98 and people who are involved in singing in a praise team 00:17:33.01\00:17:36.05 or behind an instrument, 00:17:36.08\00:17:37.79 they have a tremendous ability 00:17:37.82\00:17:40.16 to make friends with secular people, 00:17:40.19\00:17:42.62 and that's the first step in Christ's method, 00:17:42.66\00:17:45.36 mingling with people in a caring way. 00:17:45.39\00:17:48.66 Now, what you want is to get a number or an email address 00:17:48.70\00:17:51.53 because you're trying to build a relationship, 00:17:51.57\00:17:53.30 all right? 00:17:53.34\00:17:54.67 I also started to see 00:17:54.70\00:17:56.10 that we were very sensitive people, okay? 00:17:56.14\00:17:59.44 Musicians are very... 00:17:59.47\00:18:00.81 Oh, just talking about musicians, okay, okay. 00:18:00.84\00:18:02.18 We are very sensitive people. 00:18:02.21\00:18:03.71 So that allows you to have the ability to really empathize 00:18:03.75\00:18:07.62 with the pain of other people, okay? 00:18:07.65\00:18:10.05 So my main seminar is really about 00:18:10.09\00:18:12.75 how we use Christ's method. 00:18:12.79\00:18:15.86 A lot of people think 00:18:15.89\00:18:17.23 it's just for the medical missionary people, 00:18:17.26\00:18:19.49 but I'm trying to show not that... 00:18:19.53\00:18:22.26 No matter what your spiritual gift is, 00:18:22.30\00:18:24.90 you can fit it in to Christ's method 00:18:24.93\00:18:28.04 'cause everything else will fail. 00:18:28.07\00:18:29.90 And what we bring people 00:18:29.94\00:18:32.47 to the church with is ultimately 00:18:32.51\00:18:34.21 what we bring them to, okay? 00:18:34.24\00:18:36.61 So if we are trying to entertain people 00:18:36.64\00:18:38.31 into an interest in Christ, that might work for a while, 00:18:38.35\00:18:43.55 but we want people to stay, 00:18:43.59\00:18:45.39 and we want them to have 00:18:45.42\00:18:46.76 an authentic experience linking up with Jesus, 00:18:46.79\00:18:50.09 you know, not just come into a series 00:18:50.13\00:18:52.79 and on the very emotional altar call 00:18:52.83\00:18:57.60 given to us of Christ. 00:18:57.63\00:18:58.97 And we tick the box and say, "Okay, we have these numbers." 00:18:59.00\00:19:01.54 But then they don't really stay, 00:19:01.57\00:19:03.20 and then we don't nurture them. 00:19:03.24\00:19:04.57 Yes. 00:19:04.61\00:19:05.94 And I think you just hit the nail on the head 00:19:05.97\00:19:08.04 that we don't nurture them. 00:19:08.08\00:19:09.61 It's important when these newborn babes, 00:19:09.64\00:19:12.55 so to speak, come into the church 00:19:12.58\00:19:15.25 that we nurture them, that we befriend them, 00:19:15.28\00:19:18.29 that we get to know them, and their families, 00:19:18.32\00:19:21.39 and all that stuff, you know. 00:19:21.42\00:19:23.69 Because it's just like 00:19:23.73\00:19:25.06 when you introduce somebody to Christ, 00:19:25.09\00:19:26.56 how are you... 00:19:26.59\00:19:29.16 People sometimes hit people with doctrine 00:19:29.20\00:19:31.87 before introducing them to Christ. 00:19:31.90\00:19:33.87 And so, if you don't have that relationship, 00:19:33.90\00:19:36.44 why would you do this, that, and the third 00:19:36.47\00:19:39.74 for someone you don't even have a relationship with. 00:19:39.77\00:19:42.58 So you've got to get to know, I love what you're saying. 00:19:42.61\00:19:45.91 I think we're getting better 00:19:45.95\00:19:48.48 at understanding how this works. 00:19:48.52\00:19:50.35 You know, the church has existed 00:19:50.39\00:19:52.15 for quite some time, 00:19:52.19\00:19:54.06 and we should really take a hard look 00:19:54.09\00:19:55.49 at what really works and what our failures are, 00:19:55.52\00:19:58.53 you know. 00:19:58.56\00:20:00.03 So yeah, I agree. Absolutely. 00:20:00.06\00:20:01.66 So what are some of the other seminars 00:20:01.70\00:20:03.13 that you have 'cause I know 00:20:03.16\00:20:04.53 that you do a variety of seminars? 00:20:04.57\00:20:06.13 Right. 00:20:06.17\00:20:07.50 One of the most recent ones that I'm developing 00:20:07.54\00:20:08.87 is about how you deal with conflicts in the church. 00:20:08.90\00:20:11.34 People who have convictions about jewelry and other people 00:20:11.37\00:20:14.84 who don't have that conviction 00:20:14.88\00:20:17.01 that, you know, they say you can wear them, you know. 00:20:17.05\00:20:19.31 These are what we call grey areas, 00:20:19.35\00:20:21.32 I'm not really sure if they're gray areas or not, 00:20:21.35\00:20:23.15 you know, people can decide. 00:20:23.18\00:20:24.75 But I found in Spirit of Prophecy, 00:20:24.79\00:20:27.56 a lot of counsel about how we deal with people, 00:20:27.59\00:20:31.43 you know, in a very tactful and loving way. 00:20:31.46\00:20:33.96 And, you know, myself, I'm learning to do that, 00:20:34.00\00:20:37.47 you know, so that's one of the seminars 00:20:37.50\00:20:39.63 I'm developing at the moment. 00:20:39.67\00:20:41.30 But before these two seminars, 00:20:41.34\00:20:44.27 I've been doing seminars on music and morality, 00:20:44.31\00:20:47.44 music and human physiology, 00:20:47.48\00:20:49.48 music in the context of the great controversy, 00:20:49.51\00:20:52.65 and musical instruments in the Bible, 00:20:52.68\00:20:56.35 you know, that sort of thing. 00:20:56.38\00:20:57.75 Give us a little taste of the music and morality? 00:20:57.79\00:21:00.29 Okay, so there are people that believe that, 00:21:00.32\00:21:03.02 you know, music is neutral, 00:21:03.06\00:21:04.69 so you can use any kind of music... 00:21:04.73\00:21:06.86 Meaning without lyrics, 00:21:06.90\00:21:08.23 so like music without lyrics is neutral. 00:21:08.26\00:21:09.73 That's right. That's right. 00:21:09.76\00:21:11.43 Okay, what people believe? 00:21:11.47\00:21:13.60 They see culture as the overwriting factor. 00:21:13.64\00:21:16.10 You know, if it's this culture, then, you know, 00:21:16.14\00:21:18.34 they should have their cultural preferences 00:21:18.37\00:21:19.97 with the music. 00:21:20.01\00:21:21.34 Well, while I think culture has a big part to play, 00:21:21.38\00:21:23.75 within every culture because culture is manmade. 00:21:23.78\00:21:26.82 There are fallen elements. 00:21:26.85\00:21:28.55 Man is fallen, you know, and God didn't exactly say, 00:21:28.58\00:21:32.42 "You have to have that culture. 00:21:32.45\00:21:33.89 I gave you that culture." 00:21:33.92\00:21:35.29 You know, these are traditions 00:21:35.32\00:21:36.93 that came down from our ancestors 00:21:36.96\00:21:40.00 and they have a lot to do 00:21:40.03\00:21:41.36 with the religions of our ancestors as well, 00:21:41.40\00:21:43.57 on what they saw as normal, okay? 00:21:43.60\00:21:45.80 So we have to take a hard look, I think at the musical language 00:21:45.83\00:21:51.64 that we use especially in corporate worship, 00:21:51.67\00:21:53.71 and for worship, you know, and evangelism, 00:21:53.74\00:21:57.55 and it takes a little bit of digging, 00:21:57.58\00:21:59.85 you know, the history of rock and jazz, 00:21:59.88\00:22:02.02 you know, it's important I think 00:22:02.05\00:22:03.89 to have a look at that a little bit, 00:22:03.92\00:22:05.99 you know. 00:22:06.02\00:22:08.29 So yeah, these music and morality, 00:22:08.32\00:22:11.39 important stuff. 00:22:11.43\00:22:12.76 How have you seen music impact people? 00:22:12.79\00:22:16.16 Oh, yeah, definitely, my first CD, Altar Call, 00:22:16.20\00:22:19.83 is because of that impact, you know, 00:22:19.87\00:22:21.54 I wanted to take people right back to the place 00:22:21.57\00:22:23.41 where I'm playing the piano for... 00:22:23.44\00:22:26.34 At the end of a night in a series, 00:22:26.37\00:22:28.94 and the minister has just given a sermon 00:22:28.98\00:22:34.58 about a particular aspect of Christianity. 00:22:34.62\00:22:37.82 And he's asking people to make a decision for Christ, 00:22:37.85\00:22:41.76 you know. 00:22:41.79\00:22:43.12 And when words alone 00:22:43.16\00:22:47.00 might not be able to soften somebody's heart, 00:22:47.03\00:22:51.00 you know, music, 00:22:51.03\00:22:52.43 because of the way we process it, 00:22:52.47\00:22:53.97 you know, it can bypass the center of reason 00:22:54.00\00:22:56.04 and go straight to the center of emotions, 00:22:56.07\00:22:57.61 and we don't want to abuse that. 00:22:57.64\00:23:00.04 The industry knows how to use that to get sales, 00:23:00.08\00:23:02.84 and a lot of musicians know how to use that to get fans, 00:23:02.88\00:23:07.48 you know. 00:23:07.52\00:23:09.68 But we want to make responsible use of that. 00:23:09.72\00:23:14.52 You know, there're places in an Altar Call 00:23:14.56\00:23:16.56 where I would stop playing completely. 00:23:16.59\00:23:18.33 Yes. 00:23:18.36\00:23:19.69 Especially during the prayer 00:23:19.73\00:23:21.26 'cause I really want people to engage what's been set, 00:23:21.30\00:23:27.24 you know, and not confuse them. 00:23:27.27\00:23:30.31 Not confuse that with a fuzzy atmosphere, 00:23:30.34\00:23:33.07 you know, where... 00:23:33.11\00:23:35.11 So the responsible use of music, 00:23:35.14\00:23:37.61 and as I said, at my first CD, Altar Call, 00:23:37.65\00:23:40.22 that I recorded in London around the 2016 3ABN campaign. 00:23:40.25\00:23:45.02 Yeah, because that was my next thing, 00:23:45.05\00:23:46.55 almost like, how did you get here? 00:23:46.59\00:23:47.92 But before we get to that, that song that we just heard 00:23:47.96\00:23:51.89 a couple minutes ago, what CD is that on? 00:23:51.93\00:23:56.26 That's on Sojourn. Okay. 00:23:56.30\00:23:57.93 Which is an album of Negro spirituals. 00:23:57.97\00:24:00.50 Okay. 00:24:00.54\00:24:01.87 And that has to do with human displacement. 00:24:01.90\00:24:04.94 I realize that currently in the world, 00:24:04.97\00:24:07.34 we have the highest incidence of human displacement 00:24:07.38\00:24:09.34 ever recorded. 00:24:09.38\00:24:10.71 Wow. Wow. Yeah. 00:24:10.75\00:24:12.55 So one statistic that I report, 00:24:12.58\00:24:15.12 that I read said that 1 in 131 people 00:24:15.15\00:24:17.95 on the planet are displaced. 00:24:17.99\00:24:19.79 Guess what? 00:24:19.82\00:24:21.16 My ancestors were displaced from India. 00:24:21.19\00:24:23.46 They were brought to the West Indies 00:24:23.49\00:24:24.83 as indentured servants, 00:24:24.86\00:24:26.19 you know, which is another 00:24:26.23\00:24:27.56 fancy word for slavery, actually. 00:24:27.60\00:24:28.93 Yes, yes. 00:24:28.96\00:24:30.30 But as a result, I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:24:30.33\00:24:31.87 Praise the Lord for that. 00:24:31.90\00:24:33.23 And this is exactly 00:24:33.27\00:24:34.60 what happened to the descendants of slaves. 00:24:34.64\00:24:36.10 Yeah. 00:24:36.14\00:24:37.47 They got Christianity, 00:24:37.51\00:24:38.84 and so the only sojourn of music 00:24:38.87\00:24:40.64 I can think of on earth that came out of displacement 00:24:40.68\00:24:45.81 and Christianity would be Negro spirituals. 00:24:45.85\00:24:47.65 So I wanted to present them again 00:24:47.68\00:24:51.72 not just as a tag to black identity 00:24:51.75\00:24:55.19 or black history, you know, or history. 00:24:55.22\00:24:58.29 But I wanted to show that they're relevant today 00:24:58.33\00:25:00.40 to people who are displaced 00:25:00.43\00:25:01.76 because they speak to the same brokenness, 00:25:01.80\00:25:04.67 you know. 00:25:04.70\00:25:06.03 That's deep. 00:25:06.07\00:25:07.40 And the solution for that brokenness 00:25:07.44\00:25:08.77 is found in Christ. 00:25:08.80\00:25:10.14 So there are texts in the Bible 00:25:10.17\00:25:11.81 that talk about we are sojourners on the earth. 00:25:11.84\00:25:14.31 This is not our real place, this is not the real deal, 00:25:14.34\00:25:17.31 you know. 00:25:17.35\00:25:18.91 So that birthed my album Sojourn, 00:25:18.95\00:25:22.02 so Deep River is one of those spirituals. 00:25:22.05\00:25:24.65 Okay, nice. 00:25:24.69\00:25:26.02 And so how do people, if they want to get your album, 00:25:26.05\00:25:29.59 how do they... 00:25:29.62\00:25:30.96 Where do they go to get it? 00:25:30.99\00:25:32.33 Right. 00:25:32.36\00:25:33.70 So Sojourn is a new release. 00:25:33.73\00:25:35.06 Okay. 00:25:35.10\00:25:36.43 People can go to KendolMusic.com. 00:25:36.46\00:25:38.13 KendolMusic.com. 00:25:38.17\00:25:40.34 That's right. 00:25:40.37\00:25:41.70 Okay, and that's K-E-N-D-O-L Music.com. 00:25:41.74\00:25:44.84 Okay. That's right. 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.71 And there they can request the CD. 00:25:46.74\00:25:50.18 So they can actually order Altar Call 00:25:50.21\00:25:53.48 from a link right there. 00:25:53.52\00:25:54.85 Okay.
