Have you ever felt like 00:00:03.77\00:00:05.10 God had a mission for you to accomplish. 00:00:05.13\00:00:07.00 Well, stay tuned to meet two people 00:00:07.04\00:00:08.60 who answered the calling that God placed on their lives. 00:00:08.64\00:00:11.57 My name is Jason Bradley, 00:00:11.61\00:00:12.97 and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:13.01\00:00:15.24 Hello, and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:38.13\00:00:40.20 My guests today are Pastor Scott Griswold 00:00:40.24\00:00:43.71 and his wife Julie. 00:00:43.74\00:00:45.07 Pastor Griswold is the director of Reach the World Next Door, 00:00:45.11\00:00:48.58 and Julie is the prayer coordinator. 00:00:48.61\00:00:50.85 Welcome to Urban Report. It's great to be here. 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.38 It's good to have you. 00:00:53.42\00:00:54.75 I would love... There we go. 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.22 We can reach. 00:00:56.25\00:00:57.59 So tell us a little bit about your background? 00:00:57.62\00:01:00.86 Well, Julie and I went overseas almost after we were married, 00:01:00.89\00:01:04.83 to Cambodia, and spent some years there 00:01:04.86\00:01:07.30 with Adventist Frontier Missions, 00:01:07.33\00:01:09.13 helping start the church, 00:01:09.16\00:01:10.50 planting there, in that country. 00:01:10.53\00:01:12.43 And later ended up back over there in Thailand 00:01:12.47\00:01:15.10 for 10 years 00:01:15.14\00:01:16.47 with the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, 00:01:16.50\00:01:18.47 working with this center for East Asian religions. 00:01:18.51\00:01:21.48 Reaching out to Buddhist, 00:01:21.51\00:01:22.84 finding ways to share Christ's love with them. 00:01:22.88\00:01:25.11 Wow, And how did you go about doing that? 00:01:25.15\00:01:27.95 How do you witness to, like, a whole another faith? 00:01:27.98\00:01:32.05 Well, that's a whole long story, 00:01:32.09\00:01:33.99 that's a big conversation. 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.79 But the biggest things are a lot of prayer, 00:01:35.82\00:01:39.49 depending on the Holy Spirit, being a true friend, 00:01:39.53\00:01:42.20 and then coming close to where they're out, 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.03 trying to understand them, 00:01:44.07\00:01:45.53 and build bridges from that to the things 00:01:45.57\00:01:47.70 that they don't understand about Jesus. 00:01:47.74\00:01:49.57 So that's about as quick as I can put it in a nutshell. 00:01:49.60\00:01:53.71 Okay, and have you guys always been Adventists? 00:01:53.74\00:01:56.85 Have you always been in the church? 00:01:56.88\00:01:58.91 We both grew up in Seventh-day Adventist homes, 00:01:58.95\00:02:01.78 and we're walking with God, little by little, 00:02:01.82\00:02:04.49 and then we had a deeper experience, 00:02:04.52\00:02:06.59 and then slowly he captured our hearts for missions. 00:02:06.62\00:02:09.26 Nice. 00:02:09.29\00:02:10.63 And how did you get involved 00:02:10.66\00:02:12.33 with being the prayer coordinator, 00:02:12.36\00:02:14.33 and what does that look like, what do you do? 00:02:14.36\00:02:16.97 Well, I've always enjoyed praying, 00:02:17.00\00:02:19.20 I love praying with people. 00:02:19.23\00:02:21.50 And ever since I was young, I've enjoyed doing that. 00:02:21.54\00:02:25.31 And so, in our ministry now, we do united prayer, 00:02:25.34\00:02:29.88 which is, kind of, like popcorn prayers, 00:02:29.91\00:02:31.98 where everybody has a sentence to participate 00:02:32.01\00:02:35.58 if they wanted to and share praises about God, 00:02:35.62\00:02:40.16 and His... 00:02:40.19\00:02:41.52 Who He is. 00:02:41.56\00:02:42.89 And then we go into confession, and then our interceding. 00:02:42.92\00:02:46.36 And we usually take this time to bring before God the ones 00:02:46.39\00:02:50.97 that we have been reaching out to during the week, 00:02:51.00\00:02:53.57 because much of our work is working with refugees, 00:02:53.60\00:02:57.04 and immigrants, and international students 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.87 that we are meeting weekly. 00:02:58.91\00:03:01.08 So we add those to our poster, 00:03:01.11\00:03:02.98 and we're praying for them weekly, 00:03:03.01\00:03:04.58 daily in our united prayer time. 00:03:04.61\00:03:06.51 Wow. 00:03:06.55\00:03:07.88 So that's, I mean, if we're really wanting 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.25 to see Jesus come back. 00:03:09.28\00:03:10.62 We're gonna need miracles everywhere. 00:03:10.65\00:03:12.85 And the biggest miracles 00:03:12.89\00:03:14.22 we're needing is to see the work finished 00:03:14.26\00:03:15.92 to the least reached, 00:03:15.96\00:03:17.29 those who had no opportunity to know God at all. 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.96 Yes, and the gospels to go to all the world, every nation, 00:03:20.00\00:03:23.87 kindred, tongue, and people. 00:03:23.90\00:03:25.37 Absolutely, so you guys are doing an amazing work. 00:03:25.40\00:03:29.60 And how... 00:03:29.64\00:03:31.51 What is the mission 00:03:31.54\00:03:33.07 that God has placed on your heart? 00:03:33.11\00:03:35.08 When we started considering 00:03:35.11\00:03:36.44 coming back from living overseas 00:03:36.48\00:03:37.98 for 16 years, we wanted to know 00:03:38.01\00:03:39.95 as our children are going to college, 00:03:39.98\00:03:41.38 we wanted to be close to our aging parents, 00:03:41.42\00:03:43.79 what should we be doing here? 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.65 Yeah, and it's hard to leave over there, 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.12 where you can speak the language 00:03:47.16\00:03:48.49 and come here and think, 00:03:48.52\00:03:49.86 "Oh, where's the mission field here?" 00:03:49.89\00:03:51.59 And we begin to look around, 00:03:51.63\00:03:53.03 in particular, at Houston, Texas. 00:03:53.06\00:03:55.96 And this is the fifth largest metro area, fast growing, 00:03:56.00\00:03:59.63 the most diverse place in United States. 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.80 Because there is no majority population, 00:04:02.84\00:04:05.41 and because they have 4,000 to 5,000 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.84 new refugees coming in every single year, 00:04:07.88\00:04:11.11 entering there. 00:04:11.15\00:04:12.98 So as we were discovering this, 00:04:13.01\00:04:14.35 we found out they're coming from the hardest countries 00:04:14.38\00:04:16.95 in the world, meaning, 00:04:16.99\00:04:18.32 the places where you're most likely 00:04:18.35\00:04:19.69 to be persecuted as a Christian, 00:04:19.72\00:04:21.82 so like Afghanistan, Somalia, 00:04:21.86\00:04:25.19 these places that you just couldn't go. 00:04:25.23\00:04:27.86 But God has sent them here, I believe for a reason. 00:04:27.90\00:04:31.63 We have this influx, 00:04:31.67\00:04:35.14 we've got immigrants, we have refugees, 00:04:35.17\00:04:37.21 we have international students, 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.04 more than a million international students studying 00:04:39.07\00:04:41.38 in North America, tourists, and I think God has done it 00:04:41.41\00:04:45.05 because He wants us to get the work done 00:04:45.08\00:04:48.08 and we didn't go there. 00:04:48.12\00:04:49.95 You got a quote, Julie, that is so powerful. 00:04:49.98\00:04:51.42 Yes, in Evangelism, page 570, it says, 00:04:51.45\00:04:55.42 "We should be able to see 00:04:55.46\00:04:57.09 in the multiplying opportunities 00:04:57.13\00:04:59.23 to reach many foreigners in America 00:04:59.26\00:05:01.86 as a divinely appointed means of rapidly extending 00:05:01.90\00:05:05.20 the third angel's message 00:05:05.23\00:05:06.67 into all the nations of the earth. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.97 God in His providence 00:05:09.00\00:05:10.51 has brought men to our very doors, 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.71 and thrust them as it were, into our arms 00:05:12.74\00:05:15.98 that they might learn the truth, 00:05:16.01\00:05:18.11 and be qualified to do a work 00:05:18.15\00:05:19.88 that we could not do in getting the light before men 00:05:19.91\00:05:23.39 of other countries." 00:05:23.42\00:05:24.75 Wow. So in other tongues. 00:05:24.79\00:05:26.79 And so that's just... 00:05:26.82\00:05:28.16 that's, you know, if we can learn 00:05:28.19\00:05:29.92 to live intentionally looking for opportunities 00:05:29.96\00:05:34.33 for the ones that have come to America 00:05:34.36\00:05:36.73 from those countries 00:05:36.77\00:05:38.10 that have never had the opportunity 00:05:38.13\00:05:40.04 to learn about Jesus and His love. 00:05:40.07\00:05:44.81 See, that's amazing, like, I look at you two, 00:05:44.84\00:05:46.68 and I see the passion 00:05:46.71\00:05:48.41 that you have for the mission field, 00:05:48.44\00:05:50.48 and I remember meeting you Pastor Scott at GYC, 00:05:50.51\00:05:55.18 and just talking to you 00:05:55.22\00:05:56.85 and hearing some of the different stories, 00:05:56.89\00:05:59.25 and I was just blown away. 00:05:59.29\00:06:01.39 And you gave me several cards, and it said, now... 00:06:01.42\00:06:06.19 What did it say on those cards? 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.16 I carry it with me all the time. 00:06:08.20\00:06:10.07 It's called mylanguagemylife.com. 00:06:10.10\00:06:13.27 So this is a website 00:06:13.30\00:06:14.84 that we put together with different volunteers 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.97 when we've been working with ASAP ministries, 00:06:17.01\00:06:19.57 and they... 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.78 We just gathered anything we could find, 3ABN, 00:06:21.81\00:06:24.81 in the different languages, other ones, 00:06:24.85\00:06:26.82 Adventist World Radio, 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.18 Voice of Prophecy, Bible Studies, The Jesus film, 00:06:28.22\00:06:31.35 so that when you meet somebody at the door, 00:06:31.39\00:06:33.92 and or wherever you are, in the market, and they say, 00:06:33.96\00:06:36.29 "No, speak English, Vietnamese, or Afghani," 00:06:36.32\00:06:39.69 or whatever, you can put this in their hand and say, 00:06:39.73\00:06:43.37 "Vietnamese, or Farsi, or Dhari, or whatever it is" 00:06:43.40\00:06:48.24 and know that they are gonna be able to look at that 00:06:48.27\00:06:50.67 and hear in their own language. 00:06:50.71\00:06:52.54 Which is amazing. 00:06:52.57\00:06:53.91 So it just really breaks down the language barrier, 00:06:53.94\00:06:56.61 you know, there's no reason why we can't witness this. 00:06:56.64\00:07:00.25 It's very true. 00:07:00.28\00:07:01.62 It's such an amazing plan that God has, 00:07:01.65\00:07:04.09 I think of Acts 2, 00:07:04.12\00:07:06.32 when we are often praying as a people for God 00:07:06.35\00:07:09.06 to finish His work. 00:07:09.09\00:07:10.43 We know it's going to be the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:07:10.46\00:07:13.06 So when we're asking for that we, kind of, 00:07:13.09\00:07:15.70 "Okay, what does that mean, what's going to happen?" 00:07:15.73\00:07:17.70 But Acts 2 shows us exactly what's gonna happen. 00:07:17.73\00:07:20.84 And it says that in verse 5, it says, 00:07:20.87\00:07:22.90 "There were devout men in Jerusalem 00:07:22.94\00:07:25.34 from every nation under heaven." 00:07:25.37\00:07:27.71 And then, just a few verses, they say, 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.71 "How is it we're hearing in our own languages." 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.11 What's going on. God has made that possible now. 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.52 And if we will strategically begin 00:07:35.55\00:07:37.49 to look and say, 00:07:37.52\00:07:38.85 who is in my neighborhood that is not in my pews. 00:07:38.89\00:07:42.39 Who is here from countries 00:07:42.42\00:07:45.09 that I know we are waiting on so that Jesus can return. 00:07:45.13\00:07:48.90 And then we can be missionaries right here. 00:07:48.93\00:07:50.63 Yes, yeah. 00:07:50.67\00:07:52.57 Because this is a huge mission field, 00:07:52.60\00:07:55.17 right here in America. 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.54 There are a lot of people that are suffering. 00:07:56.57\00:07:57.91 There are a lot of people 00:07:57.94\00:07:59.27 that don't know about Jesus right here. 00:07:59.31\00:08:02.54 And it blows my mind that there are still people 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.81 that don't know 00:08:05.85\00:08:07.18 about Christ right here in America. 00:08:07.22\00:08:09.95 There out of the 4,000 unreached people groups 00:08:09.98\00:08:12.95 in the world, worldwide. 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.56 This means they have almost 0% Christians among them. 00:08:14.59\00:08:19.06 80, 85 or so are here 00:08:19.09\00:08:21.23 in the United States by the thousands. 00:08:21.26\00:08:23.23 These are Japanese, these are Iraqi, 00:08:23.26\00:08:26.23 these are from Bangladesh, from India, 00:08:26.27\00:08:29.17 some of these countries 00:08:29.20\00:08:30.54 that are just so huge in numbers 00:08:30.57\00:08:32.51 and almost no missionaries, they're right here with us. 00:08:32.54\00:08:35.58 Wow. 00:08:35.61\00:08:36.95 So that's why we decided to move to Houston. 00:08:36.98\00:08:39.45 We've been working with ASAP ministries 00:08:39.48\00:08:41.12 and they're operating this new training program 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.55 that started in 2017. 00:08:43.59\00:08:46.05 And it's a school where young people can come 00:08:46.09\00:08:49.22 who want to be missionaries, 00:08:49.26\00:08:50.59 and for nine months work with us. 00:08:50.63\00:08:55.90 Training for missions by doing missions. 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.23 We're out in the field, like, three days a week, 00:08:58.27\00:09:01.37 meeting refugees, immigrants, and international students, 00:09:01.40\00:09:05.01 and then the other three days spending time in the classroom, 00:09:05.04\00:09:08.91 and in the afternoon learning vocational skills, 00:09:08.94\00:09:11.25 like, gardening, like construction, 00:09:11.28\00:09:15.75 healthy cooking, various things 00:09:15.78\00:09:17.29 that they can use in missions anywhere. 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.45 So you're giving them practical tools 00:09:19.49\00:09:21.16 for living too and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:09:21.19\00:09:23.06 And that's actually 00:09:23.09\00:09:24.43 what we do here at Dare to Dream too, 00:09:24.46\00:09:26.09 I mean, that's great. 00:09:26.13\00:09:27.46 Practical tools for living in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:09:27.50\00:09:30.00 And the beautiful thing is, is that it's a small, 00:09:30.03\00:09:33.03 it's like a family, 00:09:33.07\00:09:34.40 because we want to keep it small, 00:09:34.44\00:09:36.20 between 10 and 16 students, 00:09:36.24\00:09:38.71 so that there can be that one-on-one mentorship, 00:09:38.74\00:09:41.18 and so that we can go out with the students, 00:09:41.21\00:09:43.95 we can be learning as were as we're going out, 00:09:43.98\00:09:47.52 and we meet an Afghani, and we come back and we think, 00:09:47.55\00:09:50.79 "Okay, he's talking about the Trinity." 00:09:50.82\00:09:52.42 So we learn about the Trinity and how to speak to a Muslim. 00:09:52.45\00:09:56.99 So that's the beauty and also 00:09:57.03\00:09:58.96 because it's cross-cultural in our... 00:09:58.99\00:10:01.80 We're wanting students to be not just from American born, 00:10:01.83\00:10:06.94 but from other countries, 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.87 like, we have this couple 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.54 from Taiwan, and some Burmese... 00:10:10.57\00:10:11.91 Yeah, the picture shows 00:10:11.94\00:10:13.54 some of those that are coming together. 00:10:13.58\00:10:14.91 Yeah, so it shows. 00:10:14.94\00:10:16.38 And that in itself is a mission field 00:10:16.41\00:10:18.75 that we can grow together, 00:10:18.78\00:10:20.28 and learn to appreciate cultures. 00:10:20.32\00:10:23.15 Living together, everybody in the same place, 00:10:23.18\00:10:25.32 you started to get on the each other's nerves. 00:10:25.35\00:10:27.42 You got to learn how to work through problems. 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.22 Just like in the real mission field. 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.79 And close quarters, huh? Yes, yes. 00:10:31.83\00:10:33.93 Different cultures, where you learn to appreciate 00:10:33.96\00:10:36.46 the diversity for all of its beauty, 00:10:36.50\00:10:39.43 and then where it does conflict learning 00:10:39.47\00:10:41.70 how to try to understand 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.07 what's behind the reason he does that or she does that. 00:10:43.10\00:10:46.04 Yes. 00:10:46.07\00:10:47.41 So what does it look like 00:10:47.44\00:10:49.44 when you're witnessing to somebody, 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.21 I mean, people, we often hear about people 00:10:51.25\00:10:53.52 witnessing to other people, 00:10:53.55\00:10:54.88 but what does it look like, walk us through, 00:10:54.92\00:10:57.99 maybe one instance or two instances 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.49 where you've witnessed to somebody? 00:11:00.52\00:11:01.89 Did you pass them a track, did you...? 00:11:01.92\00:11:04.96 How did you broach the subject? 00:11:04.99\00:11:06.80 Well, let's jump to the Cambodian community 00:11:06.83\00:11:11.30 that we ended up in, 00:11:11.33\00:11:12.67 because that really gives a solid illustration 00:11:12.70\00:11:15.67 of when the hurricane hit. 00:11:15.70\00:11:18.07 Hurricane Harvey in 2017 00:11:18.11\00:11:20.58 just devastated an entire community plus 00:11:20.61\00:11:23.55 many other places as well. 00:11:23.58\00:11:25.31 But the one place called Rosharon, 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.08 there were many Cambodians 00:11:27.12\00:11:28.45 had moved there to grow their greens. 00:11:28.48\00:11:29.88 These are immigrants that came out of the war, 00:11:29.92\00:11:32.29 25, 30 years ago but had been here. 00:11:32.32\00:11:35.82 And so we got to go down there, 00:11:35.86\00:11:38.73 just shortly after the students arrived, 00:11:38.76\00:11:40.90 and begin to tear out soggy... 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.70 Molded dry wall. 00:11:43.73\00:11:45.10 Yeah, everything was a mess, but mold growing really fast. 00:11:45.13\00:11:48.70 And seeing these people just in trouble, 00:11:48.74\00:11:52.24 we could practically began to care 00:11:52.27\00:11:54.31 and to reach out to them. 00:11:54.34\00:11:56.11 That's the basis of any Christ like work. 00:11:56.14\00:11:58.91 Christ method. Amen. 00:11:58.95\00:12:00.42 Yes, Christ method. 00:12:00.45\00:12:01.78 You saw the need, you met the need, 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.75 and then you tell them to follow Christ. 00:12:04.79\00:12:06.12 So you can see in the picture, us, 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.46 you know, helping these people, 00:12:08.49\00:12:10.93 some are our students, and my son there, 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.73 beginning to rebuild and care. 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.33 But in one of the pictures, 00:12:15.36\00:12:16.70 it shows with Mr. A... 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.20 A man there, Cambodian man that we met, 00:12:19.23\00:12:21.84 there's a picture of four 00:12:21.87\00:12:23.71 in which they were just surrounding him 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.24 with love and care. 00:12:26.27\00:12:27.61 'Cause when I walked up to his house, 00:12:27.64\00:12:29.14 I could smell the black mold. 00:12:29.18\00:12:30.78 Wow. 00:12:30.81\00:12:32.15 And I saw him step out, and I said, 00:12:32.18\00:12:33.82 you know, as we got acquainted, I said, 00:12:33.85\00:12:35.18 "Do you know how dangerous it is for you to live there?" 00:12:35.22\00:12:37.82 And he said, "I'm going to die soon anyway." 00:12:37.85\00:12:40.42 I was like, "What?" He was only 60. 00:12:40.46\00:12:42.12 What are you talking about? Wow, 60, that's young. 00:12:42.16\00:12:44.13 So, you know, I just thought he was talking 00:12:44.16\00:12:45.86 but Rachel began to come close to him, 00:12:45.89\00:12:48.76 and smile, and talk to him, 00:12:48.80\00:12:50.13 and he was intrigued that she was from China, 00:12:50.17\00:12:51.63 you know, Taiwan and spoke Chinese, 00:12:51.67\00:12:54.04 and pretty soon his story was pouring out, 00:12:54.07\00:12:57.11 that during the Khmer Rouge 00:12:57.14\00:12:58.71 and the Pol Pot War in that country, 00:12:58.74\00:13:01.31 his first wife had been separated 00:13:01.34\00:13:03.18 from him and killed. 00:13:03.21\00:13:04.65 And then in the refugee camp, 00:13:04.68\00:13:06.01 he remarried, only to have that wife, 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.78 as she was pregnant, 00:13:08.82\00:13:10.32 step on a landmine and also died. 00:13:10.35\00:13:13.49 So he said to us, 00:13:13.52\00:13:14.86 he said, you know, you can see the tears 00:13:14.89\00:13:16.26 still in his eyes 30 years later. 00:13:16.29\00:13:18.09 You can imagine, I never want to get married again. 00:13:18.13\00:13:21.26 And then he said, but then this lady found me. 00:13:21.30\00:13:23.43 And he reached in his car, 00:13:23.47\00:13:25.03 pulled out one of the few things 00:13:25.07\00:13:26.40 that didn't get ruined by the flood, 00:13:26.43\00:13:27.77 and showed us the picture of his third wife. 00:13:27.80\00:13:30.57 We had just met her the day before, 00:13:30.61\00:13:32.21 she was crying at the Buddhist temple. 00:13:32.24\00:13:33.88 Encourage her heart, be a friend to her. 00:13:33.91\00:13:35.24 We prayed with her, and cared for her, 00:13:35.28\00:13:38.11 and now we were meeting 00:13:38.15\00:13:39.48 and going to be able to help then 00:13:39.51\00:13:41.58 in their struggles. 00:13:41.62\00:13:42.95 So that's where it started, 00:13:42.98\00:13:44.32 we went and got a book that was in Cambodian, 00:13:44.35\00:13:45.79 that have the gospel, put it in his hands, 00:13:45.82\00:13:48.32 the next time we met him, 00:13:48.36\00:13:49.69 he was sharing the story about Jesus 00:13:49.72\00:13:51.23 on the cross with us. 00:13:51.26\00:13:53.40 And we were just so touched 00:13:53.43\00:13:54.76 how through the horrible things that happened, 00:13:54.80\00:13:57.57 God still works and brings people together, 00:13:57.60\00:14:00.84 and so wherever you can go, 00:14:00.87\00:14:02.37 you don't have to have a hurricane. 00:14:02.40\00:14:04.31 But when you begin to care and to reach out, 00:14:04.34\00:14:06.71 you will find something 00:14:06.74\00:14:08.08 that you can do to meet somebody's needs 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.51 and that's what we're trying to do. 00:14:10.55\00:14:12.11 That's beautiful. 00:14:12.15\00:14:13.55 Where do people go to get the cards? 00:14:13.58\00:14:16.45 Ah, that's a good question? Yeah, how do people get those? 00:14:16.48\00:14:19.32 If you go to that website reachtheworldnextdoor.com, 00:14:19.35\00:14:22.32 they will link you to explain it 00:14:22.36\00:14:23.93 and how to use them, 00:14:23.96\00:14:25.29 and then it will link you to the ASAP ministry site, 00:14:25.33\00:14:28.43 where you can order them. 00:14:28.46\00:14:29.80 And they're cheap, I carry 'em, gave probably 20 away, 00:14:29.83\00:14:32.93 on our way here in the airport. 00:14:32.97\00:14:34.84 And you just, you know, you can ask a person, 00:14:34.87\00:14:36.87 "Do you speak another language besides English?" 00:14:36.91\00:14:39.31 And if they tell you say, "Well, but this is there." 00:14:39.34\00:14:41.58 It's got really good videos, and different things, 00:14:41.61\00:14:44.25 and great stuff in English too. 00:14:44.28\00:14:45.81 Yes, yes. 00:14:45.85\00:14:47.18 So that's a way they can connect. 00:14:47.22\00:14:48.85 Yeah, because, I mean, you go to certain restaurants, 00:14:48.88\00:14:51.42 you go to, maybe a salon, nail salon, 00:14:51.45\00:14:54.82 whatever the case may be. 00:14:54.86\00:14:56.76 People speaking other languages, 00:14:56.79\00:14:58.93 no reason why we can't witness. 00:14:58.96\00:15:01.20 Now there is, I mean, there's even Google Translate. 00:15:01.23\00:15:05.00 So no language barriers anymore. 00:15:05.03\00:15:09.80 We have to get the gospel out. Yes. 00:15:09.84\00:15:12.34 There is another area that we're working in, 00:15:12.37\00:15:14.18 which is just apartment complexes 00:15:14.21\00:15:15.91 right in Houston city in southwest area. 00:15:15.94\00:15:18.75 There are places where housing maybe... 00:15:18.78\00:15:21.42 begin to be more vacant. 00:15:21.45\00:15:22.95 And with the refugees coming in, 00:15:22.98\00:15:24.75 refugees resettlement agencies contact them and say, 00:15:24.79\00:15:28.16 you know, "Is there a good place for them?" 00:15:28.19\00:15:31.46 So we found places where there's just many 00:15:31.49\00:15:33.56 from Afghanistan and Somalia, as we were mentioning earlier, 00:15:33.60\00:15:37.60 and Julie, in particular, has had some very 00:15:37.63\00:15:39.83 special experiences in connecting 00:15:39.87\00:15:41.64 with Muslim ladies there, 00:15:41.67\00:15:43.51 that I think is worth talking about. 00:15:43.54\00:15:45.44 Well, it's... 00:15:45.47\00:15:46.81 I wish our students could be with us, 00:15:46.84\00:15:48.18 because every time I go out, 00:15:48.21\00:15:50.81 there's all of us are going out, and I think, 00:15:50.85\00:15:52.81 "Oh my, I've got so many wonderful stories." 00:15:52.85\00:15:54.65 And then when we get in the van and talk about everybody else, 00:15:54.68\00:15:57.99 their divine appointments that they have had, 00:15:58.02\00:15:59.95 as they are knocking on doors and meeting people. 00:15:59.99\00:16:02.52 It's just exciting when you're willing 00:16:02.56\00:16:04.89 to go outside of your comfort zone, 00:16:04.93\00:16:08.30 and just say, you know, we are wanting to get 00:16:08.33\00:16:11.53 to know the neighborhood, and is there anything... 00:16:11.57\00:16:13.94 We want to welcome you to our country, 00:16:13.97\00:16:16.07 because most of them are very new. 00:16:16.10\00:16:18.27 Yes. Some have just arrived. 00:16:18.31\00:16:19.84 I met a family of six boys 00:16:19.87\00:16:23.18 from Afghanistan, two, three Sabbaths ago, 00:16:23.21\00:16:26.11 and they had just arrived three months ago. 00:16:26.15\00:16:28.45 And they took us up to their apartment, 00:16:28.48\00:16:30.49 and they had to sit down, gave us nuts and snacks, 00:16:30.52\00:16:34.82 and just wanted to be friends with us immediately. 00:16:34.86\00:16:37.86 And so we ask them, 00:16:37.89\00:16:39.23 you know, is there anything that we can do to help you, 00:16:39.26\00:16:41.10 and the one story that Scott 00:16:41.13\00:16:43.26 was probably talking about, Rachel, 00:16:43.30\00:16:46.57 one of our students as she's knocking on doors, 00:16:46.60\00:16:49.80 and she met a lady who was pregnant, 00:16:49.84\00:16:53.14 and this was back in November. 00:16:53.17\00:16:55.84 So we kept visiting, 00:16:55.88\00:16:57.21 every Sunday we're in this apartment building 00:16:57.25\00:16:58.91 so that we're able to go on... 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.65 It's an ongoing friendship. And that's the key. 00:17:00.68\00:17:04.09 Yes, consistency. And to... 00:17:04.12\00:17:05.45 Yes, to be able to be the family 00:17:05.49\00:17:07.86 that they have had to leave behind 00:17:07.89\00:17:09.49 because of the war, 00:17:09.52\00:17:10.93 or the reasons why they've had to come 00:17:10.96\00:17:12.73 because of the crisis in their country, 00:17:12.76\00:17:14.86 for us to step in that gap, and be the family for these, 00:17:14.90\00:17:18.53 for some of our brothers and sisters like this. 00:17:18.57\00:17:21.17 And this lady was from Afghanistan. 00:17:21.20\00:17:23.84 And we have befriended her each week. 00:17:23.87\00:17:27.88 And we were there when she first gave her... 00:17:27.91\00:17:31.68 Gave birth and we were her first... 00:17:31.71\00:17:33.25 In fact, there's a picture of that, 00:17:33.28\00:17:34.62 little one 00:17:34.65\00:17:35.98 with our student holding that baby. 00:17:36.02\00:17:37.79 Wow! We got the picture right there. 00:17:37.82\00:17:39.65 And it was... 00:17:39.69\00:17:41.02 And we were their first visitor. 00:17:41.06\00:17:42.52 And she said, "Thank you. You're my first visitor." 00:17:42.56\00:17:45.13 And everybody wants to show off their baby, 00:17:45.16\00:17:47.10 especially to their families. 00:17:47.13\00:17:48.63 So we could be family for her. 00:17:48.66\00:17:52.37 And the next week we came, next Sunday, 00:17:52.40\00:17:54.90 and then she started referring to us as her best friends. 00:17:54.94\00:17:59.31 And each week that we come, 00:17:59.34\00:18:01.74 we hear a little bit more about her story, 00:18:01.78\00:18:04.38 and she's asking us questions, 00:18:04.41\00:18:06.68 and it's just beginning to build 00:18:06.72\00:18:08.75 a beautiful friendship. 00:18:08.78\00:18:10.29 So you guys were cultivating relationships 00:18:10.32\00:18:12.72 with people is so important. 00:18:12.75\00:18:14.52 I think if we just this one question, 00:18:14.56\00:18:16.93 what would I want someone to do for me if it was me? 00:18:16.96\00:18:21.20 I love the text in Leviticus 19:34, 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.60 it says, "The stranger who dwells among you 00:18:23.63\00:18:26.07 shall be to you as one born among you, 00:18:26.10\00:18:29.10 and you shall love him as yourself, 00:18:29.14\00:18:31.37 for you were strangers in the land of Egypt, 00:18:31.41\00:18:33.74 I am the Lord your God." 00:18:33.78\00:18:35.74 You know, that's... 00:18:35.78\00:18:37.11 Jesus said, as you've done it to the least of these, 00:18:37.15\00:18:38.95 and He specifically spoke of, 00:18:38.98\00:18:40.82 I was a stranger, and you took me in. 00:18:40.85\00:18:45.22 Took me in, right to your heart. 00:18:45.25\00:18:47.92 And so in all the talk about refugees and immigrants, 00:18:47.96\00:18:50.36 all we need to do is say what would Jesus do, 00:18:50.39\00:18:53.26 how can we care and share. 00:18:53.29\00:18:55.23 And, you know, start praying. 00:18:55.26\00:18:58.10 This is a big, big piece 00:18:58.13\00:18:59.57 of what we've been talking about. 00:18:59.60\00:19:01.37 In fact, we've put together a booklet called Praying 00:19:01.40\00:19:04.04 for the World Next Door, 00:19:04.07\00:19:06.01 and it goes through the statistics 00:19:06.04\00:19:07.68 of who has come to America. 00:19:07.71\00:19:10.11 And it shows you where to go at our website to find out 00:19:10.15\00:19:12.75 who's in your metro area. 00:19:12.78\00:19:14.28 To find out who are the least reached here. 00:19:14.32\00:19:16.95 Because, I mean, you know, everybody is important, right? 00:19:16.99\00:19:19.59 But when you start to realize these people have no witness. 00:19:19.62\00:19:22.79 They're not going to come to my church, 00:19:22.82\00:19:24.59 they don't have radio program in their language, 00:19:24.63\00:19:26.56 and a lot of them 00:19:26.59\00:19:27.93 still don't speak another language. 00:19:27.96\00:19:29.43 So I need to be the one 00:19:29.46\00:19:31.17 who looks for that one lost sheep, 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.80 and leave the 99, 00:19:32.83\00:19:34.20 you know, we're so busy in church, 00:19:34.24\00:19:35.90 in our homes, we don't have time for this, 00:19:35.94\00:19:38.34 unless we make it a priority. 00:19:38.37\00:19:39.84 Absolutely. Like, Jesus did. 00:19:39.87\00:19:41.44 You know, I think of Jesus came to reach the Jews 00:19:41.48\00:19:44.31 so that they can in turn reach the world. 00:19:44.35\00:19:46.35 But He just couldn't help Himself. 00:19:46.38\00:19:47.72 There's the Roman centurion, 00:19:47.75\00:19:49.98 then there is the Samaritan woman, 00:19:50.02\00:19:51.55 and then there's a Syrophoenician lady, 00:19:51.59\00:19:53.42 then there's the 4,000, the feeding of the 4,000. 00:19:53.46\00:19:56.86 He just kept reaching 00:19:56.89\00:19:58.23 the world next door, even at the cross, 00:19:58.26\00:20:00.53 He was reaching out to the terrorists on His right, 00:20:00.56\00:20:04.23 and the Roman soldiers down below. 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.23 And that should give us, you know, just the confidence 00:20:06.27\00:20:08.80 that this matters to the heart of Jesus. 00:20:08.84\00:20:11.17 Yes, that level of service is just... 00:20:11.21\00:20:14.31 Yeah. Yeah. That's amazing. 00:20:14.34\00:20:16.64 So as we pray, I believe, 00:20:16.68\00:20:18.31 God is gonna do incredible divine appointments, 00:20:18.35\00:20:21.25 like, we were walking at the apartment complex, 00:20:21.28\00:20:23.69 you were visiting that lady, 00:20:23.72\00:20:25.95 and we had gone to a home, but they weren't there, 00:20:25.99\00:20:28.36 or they were sleeping, or something, 00:20:28.39\00:20:29.72 and I'm just thinking, 00:20:29.76\00:20:31.09 we have some time to kill it, and I don't want to kill it. 00:20:31.13\00:20:33.40 I want to know, God... You got two students with you. 00:20:33.43\00:20:34.96 Yeah, two students with me, walking through, 00:20:35.00\00:20:36.90 and I'm just praying, "Lord, lead us." 00:20:36.93\00:20:38.43 We go around a corner, and there is this man 00:20:38.47\00:20:40.80 with a horribly scarred face and hands. 00:20:40.84\00:20:44.61 And I reached out my hand, and I shook his hand and said, 00:20:44.64\00:20:46.47 "Hi, my name's Scott, what's your name?" 00:20:46.51\00:20:48.18 And he looked at me, and his eyes just show, 00:20:48.21\00:20:51.28 and I kept looking past the scars 00:20:51.31\00:20:53.82 through those eyes to say, 00:20:53.85\00:20:55.22 "This is a real human behind that." 00:20:55.25\00:20:57.59 He was from Afghanistan. 00:20:57.62\00:20:59.25 And he said, "Well, that's a long story." 00:20:59.29\00:21:00.86 You know, when one of the students 00:21:00.89\00:21:02.39 asked him a question, not to directly. 00:21:02.42\00:21:05.13 And I'm sure we will hear that 00:21:05.16\00:21:06.63 because we got his house number, 00:21:06.66\00:21:08.73 and we're going to be back visiting him, 00:21:08.76\00:21:10.57 'cause he just soaked up the friendship 00:21:10.60\00:21:12.27 you could tell he was lonely. 00:21:12.30\00:21:13.64 Nice, nice. So... 00:21:13.67\00:21:15.00 So prayer's a big key. 00:21:15.04\00:21:16.57 In families we've talked about, 00:21:16.60\00:21:18.74 looking and finding out who the least reached are, 00:21:18.77\00:21:21.41 what else would you say, Julie? 00:21:21.44\00:21:22.81 Just one of the things that we just take for granted, 00:21:22.84\00:21:26.15 that we found out about one, when we were knocking on doors, 00:21:26.18\00:21:31.22 we found a Somali 00:21:31.25\00:21:34.02 who didn't have any way to get to a doctor. 00:21:34.06\00:21:36.73 He had just come from the refugee camps, 00:21:36.76\00:21:38.49 he had a broken nose, because he had... 00:21:38.53\00:21:41.03 He had taken care of a young lady 00:21:41.06\00:21:44.27 who had been being bullied by several teenagers. 00:21:44.30\00:21:47.70 And he stepped in to help this young lady, 00:21:47.74\00:21:49.90 even though she didn't... 00:21:49.94\00:21:51.27 He didn't know her. 00:21:51.31\00:21:52.64 So he has this broken nose, everything is so expensive, 00:21:52.67\00:21:55.38 you know, doctors, 00:21:55.41\00:21:56.75 you just can't walk in much without. 00:21:56.78\00:21:58.21 No, you can't. 00:21:58.25\00:21:59.58 And when you don't have any money, 00:21:59.61\00:22:00.95 and so when we went to his door to ask, 00:22:00.98\00:22:03.18 you know, how can we help your... 00:22:03.22\00:22:05.15 You, here in America. This is not so hard. 00:24:05.77\00:24:07.61 I don't have to know all about these religions to reach them, 00:24:07.64\00:24:10.58 but I just have to be in the process of saying, 00:24:10.61\00:24:13.01 "God, please use me. 00:24:13.05\00:24:14.52 And when you think of what one person may do, 00:24:14.55\00:24:17.05 think of the Apostle Paul, 00:24:17.09\00:24:18.79 and what he was able to accomplish for God 00:24:18.82\00:24:21.22 Think of the international students that are here, 00:24:21.26\00:24:23.29 these are the world leaders, or future world leaders. 00:24:23.32\00:24:26.23 And they're here for four years, 00:24:26.26\00:24:27.60 six years, short time. 00:24:27.63\00:24:29.10 But 80% of them go back 00:24:29.13\00:24:31.53 having never been in a Christian church, 00:24:31.57\00:24:33.94 75% say they never had an American friend. 00:24:33.97\00:24:37.41 And we can change that. 00:24:37.44\00:24:39.14 You know, Isaiah 60, I think it's verse 22, 00:24:39.17\00:24:41.51 it says, "A little one will become a thousand, 00:24:41.54\00:24:43.28 and a small one, a strong nation. 00:24:43.31\00:24:45.25 I, the Lord, will hasten it in its time." 00:24:45.28\00:24:47.88 That's what God wants to do. 00:24:47.92\00:24:49.62 And you may be tired, you may think you have no time, 00:24:49.65\00:24:52.12 but if you just reach out to one, 00:24:52.15\00:24:54.69 and I did that on a shuttle, 00:24:54.72\00:24:56.46 when I was tired coming back from an overseas trip, 00:24:56.49\00:24:59.16 and I smiled at a young girl from China. 00:24:59.19\00:25:02.50 She smiled back and wanted to talk. 00:25:02.53\00:25:04.67 We made a friendship, brought her to the house, 00:25:04.70\00:25:07.00 got to know my wife, she began coming to church, 00:25:07.04\00:25:10.27 profess some belief in Jesus, then found her husband, 00:25:10.31\00:25:13.88 he was from a somewhat Christian background, 00:25:13.91\00:25:16.68 and just the other day, 00:25:16.71\00:25:18.05 I was saying to our students behind us, 00:25:18.08\00:25:19.71 we haven't learned much English, 00:25:19.75\00:25:21.25 and the Chinese speaking ones were there, 00:25:21.28\00:25:23.42 and, I mean, we haven't learned much Chinese 00:25:23.45\00:25:26.39 and all about, all I know, is Shasha, 00:25:26.42\00:25:28.46 and she said that's right, Shun Shun, 00:25:28.49\00:25:30.23 I need to get in touch with her, 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.59 'cause she had met 00:25:31.63\00:25:32.96 our international student friend, 00:25:32.99\00:25:34.33 whose name is Shun Shun, 00:25:34.36\00:25:35.73 she confused it with what I was saying, 00:25:35.76\00:25:38.03 called her that night 00:25:38.07\00:25:39.50 and set up Bible studies with her over the phone. 00:25:39.53\00:25:41.57 Wow! 00:25:41.60\00:25:42.94 So who knows what Shun Shun will do for the Lord, 00:25:42.97\00:25:45.51 but we need to just be thinking one person. 00:25:45.54\00:25:48.18 Absolutely. 00:25:48.21\00:25:51.05 You guys are doing 00:25:51.08\00:25:52.41 such amazing things by the grace of God. 00:25:52.45\00:25:54.92 How do people get involved, 00:25:54.95\00:25:56.58 and what are some of your needs? 00:25:56.62\00:25:59.19 Okay, let me say two ways, big ways to get involved. 00:25:59.22\00:26:02.89 The first one is come join us.
