Now, what about you? 00:02:17.67\00:02:20.07 Oh well, Jason, I was born and raised Pentecostal 00:02:20.14\00:02:22.47 up until four-and-half-years ago or so 00:02:22.50\00:02:25.11 when I accepted the Adventist Faith, yeah. 00:02:25.14\00:02:27.64 Oh, and how did you come to accept the Adventist faith? 00:02:27.68\00:02:31.15 Well, it is a very interesting story, 00:02:31.18\00:02:32.58 I was at the University where we attended together 00:02:32.61\00:02:34.92 and I met his brother which I'm married to, 00:02:34.98\00:02:37.69 his older brother, René. 00:02:37.72\00:02:39.05 Jason: So, this is your sister-in-law. 00:02:39.09\00:02:40.92 Kalina: That's my brother-in-law. 00:02:40.96\00:02:42.69 Renoir: So I've know her as long as my brother has known her yeah 00:02:42.72\00:02:46.19 And so, I was the RA of the dorms 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.73 and I had to meet all the students, 00:02:48.76\00:02:51.23 and he was one of the students and I met him 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.27 and I find him interesting, leaving every day Saturday... 00:02:53.30\00:02:56.44 and I said, "Where do you go every day Saturday?" 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.14 And he said to me, "Well, I go to church... " 00:02:59.17\00:03:01.14 and he blew me off... just like that... 00:03:01.18\00:03:02.64 later on in our friendship, 00:03:02.68\00:03:04.05 he got more open with his Christianity 00:03:04.08\00:03:07.08 and I was wondering why he's so ashamed of his Christianity, 00:03:07.12\00:03:10.39 he was an Adventist and I started digging in his faith 00:03:10.45\00:03:14.39 and I was like, "Where... where do you go?" 00:03:14.42\00:03:16.62 He said, "I'm an Adventist and study the Sabbath day 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.29 but, you have the Mark of the Beast. " 00:03:19.33\00:03:21.50 And I said... Jason: That's crazy... 00:03:21.53\00:03:23.63 Kalina: Yeah... so... that began a whole adventure. 00:03:23.67\00:03:26.00 Jason: How did that conversation well... you got married now... 00:03:26.03\00:03:28.24 but I mean... how did that conversation go? 00:03:28.30\00:03:30.51 Well, that started a big strike in my heart 00:03:30.54\00:03:32.91 and fast forward a little... fast forward a lot... 00:03:32.94\00:03:36.88 we started going at it with the Bible... 00:03:36.91\00:03:39.65 basically was challenging my faith and he would ask me, 00:03:39.68\00:03:42.35 "Well, show me what you believe in the Bible... " 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.19 I said, "I'm not going to show you 00:03:44.22\00:03:45.55 because I don't have to prove anything to you," 00:03:45.59\00:03:46.92 really, I didn't know... 00:03:46.96\00:03:48.29 but I told him, "It's my faith and you can't question my faith 00:03:48.32\00:03:51.29 I have 100 percent faith and you can't question it... " 00:03:51.33\00:03:53.80 and I would ask him, "Well, let me... you show me" 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.26 and he said, "Okay, give me two days and I'll show you" 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.67 and he didn't know where to find anything 00:03:58.70\00:04:00.77 so he went back to do his study 00:04:00.80\00:04:02.27 and in him studying... he got... he drew closer to the Lord, 00:04:02.30\00:04:05.74 and I grew closer to the Lord in studying together with him. 00:04:05.77\00:04:08.94 What a blessing, now let's talk about health, right? 00:04:08.98\00:04:12.45 Because you guys are deeply involved 00:04:12.48\00:04:15.82 in the Medical Missionary work, 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.32 we've had you two... you came to the Studio before 00:04:17.35\00:04:22.16 but let's talk about how you got involved 00:04:22.19\00:04:25.66 in Medical Missionary work. 00:04:25.69\00:04:27.03 Well, actually it's a long story but I'll keep it short, 00:04:27.06\00:04:30.80 we... actually the first thing that we got interested in 00:04:30.83\00:04:34.67 was the gospel, I mean, 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.81 even while my brother met her just challenging us... 00:04:36.84\00:04:40.31 we had to go home and study, I remember going online 00:04:40.38\00:04:43.78 and looked at Amazing Facts Bible Study, 00:04:43.85\00:04:45.31 she'll be like, "Oh, what about Hell 00:04:45.35\00:04:46.72 and what about burning forever?" and we'd be like... 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.98 "You know what... Hell is something that is not real... " 00:04:50.02\00:04:53.52 and we would go back and study at home, 00:04:53.56\00:04:54.96 we'd put together a study, 00:04:55.02\00:04:56.36 we'd come back the next day and give a study on Hellfire 00:04:56.39\00:04:58.96 and different things like that and that drew us closer 00:04:58.99\00:05:01.63 and getting closer to God and the gospel... 00:05:01.66\00:05:04.73 studies in the Bible for ourselves, 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.84 a passion just grew out for sharing Bible Studies 00:05:07.90\00:05:12.24 with young people, going... our AY Programs, 00:05:12.27\00:05:15.81 leading out in AY Programs... 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.18 and when we saw a soul being drawn to Christ 00:05:17.21\00:05:19.81 and young people giving their lives to Christ 00:05:19.85\00:05:22.28 through the ministry that we were doing, 00:05:22.32\00:05:24.65 I remember one time we just like an... epiphany... 00:05:24.69\00:05:28.02 I was like, "Man! this is something 00:05:28.09\00:05:29.96 that I would love to do for the rest of my life. " 00:05:29.99\00:05:31.33 Jason: Wow! 00:05:31.36\00:05:32.69 And by that, learning about our bodies being the temple of God 00:05:32.73\00:05:36.56 bringing us closer to God, I'm like, 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.37 "I really have to watch what I put into my body" 00:05:38.40\00:05:40.57 so then, I started to learn from Inspiration 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.70 and also the Bible... reading... 00:05:42.74\00:05:44.74 how God wanted us to treat our bodies, 00:05:44.77\00:05:47.41 and I remember one time a family they were all into health, 00:05:47.48\00:05:49.74 and they were talking about a cleanser they were on... 00:05:49.78\00:05:52.11 they were doing... and she said, 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.48 "Oh, I think this cleansed my... all my illnesses went away" 00:05:53.52\00:05:56.42 and different things like that 00:05:56.45\00:05:57.79 I'm like, "Wow, you know we're interested, 00:05:57.82\00:05:59.72 we want to do this cleanse... Jason: Yes Sir. 00:18:57.40\00:18:59.80 Well, I... as you can tell, I'm not from America, 00:18:59.83\00:19:03.87 I am a New Zealander 00:19:03.91\00:19:05.64 and I came to America because I married an American lady 00:19:05.67\00:19:10.51 and they asked me to go on the Board 00:19:10.55\00:19:13.38 and then I took a six-month contract 00:19:13.42\00:19:16.25 to restructure Asian Aid 00:19:16.28\00:19:18.45 so I'm now seven years into my six-month contract. 00:19:18.49\00:19:22.16 Jason: Okay... okay... wonderful 00:19:22.19\00:19:24.86 and where did this... where did this vision start? 00:19:24.89\00:19:27.93 How did this Organization even come about, 00:19:27.96\00:19:31.13 like where did the vision come from? 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.87 Well, actually, Asian Aid was started in the beginning 00:19:32.93\00:19:36.20 just to get cheap freight for warm clothing and blankets 00:19:36.24\00:19:39.51 to go to South Korea after the war 00:19:39.54\00:19:41.18 but the Adventist Church was running a small orphanage 00:19:41.21\00:19:45.05 in Seoul... and that's where 00:19:45.08\00:19:47.35 the child sponsorship program started 00:19:47.38\00:19:49.85 and then it went to Vietnam 00:19:49.88\00:19:51.62 and then we went into India and Bangladesh 00:19:51.65\00:19:54.32 and then... in the beginning... all the Nepali children 00:19:54.36\00:19:57.86 were actually just coming into India to study 00:19:57.89\00:20:00.03 so, those were the three countries 00:20:00.06\00:20:02.00 where it started fairly early in the piece, 00:20:02.03\00:20:05.23 because Vietnam fell... long time ago now... yeah, so... 00:20:05.27\00:20:09.27 Okay, now what stories do you have because I know... 00:20:09.30\00:20:13.27 in doing this great work, 00:20:13.31\00:20:15.58 there are so many stories that you probably have, 00:20:15.61\00:20:18.51 we'd love to hear a couple of them. 00:20:18.55\00:20:21.38 Well, Helen, you try and tell one story 00:20:21.45\00:20:24.45 because it's hard to hold her at one... tell one story... 00:20:24.49\00:20:28.96 Jason: We've got some time, 00:20:28.99\00:20:30.33 we've got a little bit of time left 00:20:30.36\00:20:32.09 so you got some time to tell us. 00:20:32.13\00:20:33.80 Well, I guess the stories about children that are growing up 00:20:33.83\00:20:36.63 in our orphanages are... sort of a bit special, 00:20:36.67\00:20:39.97 like, there was one young man where he and his sister... 00:20:40.00\00:20:44.01 the mother had died... and the father had decided... 00:20:44.04\00:20:47.58 he had already bought poison to kill the children 00:20:47.61\00:20:51.05 because he didn't know what to do 00:20:51.08\00:20:52.41 but an Adventist man knew about our Sunshine Home 00:20:52.45\00:20:55.32 and so those three children were brought to Sunshine... 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.15 one of the little girls that was only around 2 or 3... 00:20:58.19\00:21:00.99 she had been trodden on the leg with a cow 00:21:01.02\00:21:03.79 and that had gotten infected 00:21:03.83\00:21:05.76 and so they had treated it with cow dung, 00:21:05.79\00:21:07.83 so she had cow dung plastered all over her... with cow dung... 00:21:07.86\00:21:12.93 see cows are the gods of the Hindus, you see 00:21:12.97\00:21:15.57 and so, her leg was badly infected 00:21:15.60\00:21:18.14 and so... they were actually the first bigger children 00:21:18.17\00:21:22.04 that came to Sunshine Home, 00:21:22.08\00:21:23.41 before that, Dorothy Watts just had some babies, 00:21:23.45\00:21:26.05 and it's interesting how she got those babies too, 00:21:26.11\00:21:28.72 she would go into a hospital, 00:21:28.75\00:21:30.19 well, one child, she told me about... 00:21:30.22\00:21:32.62 she went into the hospital expecting this baby... sick baby 00:21:32.65\00:21:37.19 to be able to be given to her 00:21:37.23\00:21:38.89 and they tried to tell her the baby wasn't there 00:21:38.96\00:21:40.80 but she knew that the baby was... 00:21:40.83\00:21:43.43 and Dorothy Watts doesn't give up easy, 00:21:43.47\00:21:46.37 so eventually, she just went upstairs 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.80 and she demanded to see this baby 00:21:48.84\00:21:51.17 and then she took it and she took it home... 00:21:51.21\00:21:53.81 no... she only had the scooter, so she's like, 00:21:53.84\00:21:56.48 "How can I carry the baby and ride the scooter?" 00:21:56.54\00:21:59.55 So she had to take a taxi home with the baby 00:21:59.58\00:22:01.98 and then come back and get the scooter. 00:22:02.02\00:22:03.65 Jason: Wow! 00:22:03.69\00:22:05.02 So, that was sort of how Sunshine Home 00:22:05.05\00:22:07.02 began in Bangalore. 00:22:07.06\00:22:08.82 We've got a young man here today 00:22:08.86\00:22:11.59 who lives in New York and he's a Physiotherapist, 00:22:11.63\00:22:16.97 he's married with a young baby, 00:22:17.00\00:22:19.90 maybe Helen... tell their story. 00:22:19.93\00:22:22.77 Okay, well, he also came from Sunshine Home, 00:22:22.80\00:22:25.04 there were four children in that family 00:22:25.07\00:22:26.84 and the father had threatened to kill their mother 00:22:26.88\00:22:29.81 and so the mother kept coming to Sunshine... 00:22:29.84\00:22:32.38 and she said, "I'm going to die, 00:22:32.41\00:22:33.75 I know my husband's going to kill me, 00:22:33.78\00:22:35.48 I can't do anything about it 00:22:35.52\00:22:36.92 but I want you to please save my children... " 00:22:36.99\00:22:39.15 but the lady in charge... she sort of thought, 00:22:39.19\00:22:41.56 "Well, both parents are there, 00:22:41.59\00:22:42.92 they're both alive... this is an orphanage... " 00:22:42.96\00:22:45.43 and so, the poor mother... 00:22:45.46\00:22:47.00 she kept coming back and coming back... 00:22:47.03\00:22:48.70 I'm sure it was at least four times, 00:22:48.76\00:22:50.43 I just forget... but... eventually Rosette said, 00:22:50.47\00:22:53.94 "Okay, we'll take the four children" 00:22:53.97\00:22:55.77 and so the four children came to Sunshine 00:22:55.80\00:22:58.67 and just a few days later, 00:22:58.71\00:23:01.18 the father poured fuel on the mother 00:23:01.21\00:23:03.28 and then as she was burning... she grabbed him, 00:23:03.31\00:23:07.02 and so they both died. Jason: Wow! 00:23:07.05\00:23:09.08 So, those children have really grown up, 00:23:09.12\00:23:11.59 you know... really... especially... 00:23:11.62\00:23:13.19 actually two of them are in the UK 00:23:13.22\00:23:14.99 and two of them are in the US... 00:23:15.02\00:23:16.73 and Bobby John is actually here with us at ASI at the moment 00:23:16.76\00:23:20.80 and he's the third in the family 00:23:20.86\00:23:23.10 the two girls are both nurses, they both studied nursing 00:23:23.13\00:23:26.33 and Bobby John is as he said a Physiotherapist 00:23:26.37\00:23:30.81 and they've done really well in their lives so... 00:23:30.84\00:23:35.24 those stories are really special to me. 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.51 Jason: Yes, yes... now what advice would you have 00:23:37.55\00:23:41.02 to... and this question is going to go to both of you, 00:23:41.05\00:23:43.52 what advice would you have for someone at home 00:23:43.55\00:23:46.86 that's watching this program 00:23:46.89\00:23:48.22 that really wants to get involved 00:23:48.26\00:23:49.59 and really wants to make a difference 00:23:49.62\00:23:50.96 what advice would you have for that young person? 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.79 Well, I'll just say that if they sponsor a child, 00:23:52.83\00:23:54.86 it kind of gives them someone in their lives 00:23:54.90\00:23:58.30 that can be a bit special, 00:23:58.33\00:23:59.67 some of the children have really grown up 00:23:59.70\00:24:03.91 and have really... eventually 00:24:03.94\00:24:05.34 some of them have even met their sponsors 00:24:05.37\00:24:06.98 of course, that doesn't always happen 00:24:07.01\00:24:08.54 but even just... even if you can only give a child 00:24:08.58\00:24:11.38 two or three years of education 00:24:11.41\00:24:13.11 it's better than nothing, isn't it? 00:24:13.15\00:24:14.48 Jason: Yes, absolutely. 00:24:14.52\00:24:15.88 And I just feel that sponsorship 00:24:15.92\00:24:17.65 has just transformed the lives of so many children 00:24:17.69\00:24:20.09 that you couldn't count. 00:24:20.12\00:24:21.46 Oh, praise the Lord, what about you Jim? 00:24:21.49\00:24:23.86 Well, Helen and I see sponsorship as... 00:24:23.89\00:24:26.59 that we all want to be involved in mission field 00:24:26.63\00:24:29.40 and not everybody can travel 00:24:29.46\00:24:31.37 but with sponsorship, every morning, 00:24:31.43\00:24:33.94 someone in another country is waking up depending on you 00:24:33.97\00:24:38.77 and depending on you for school, depending on you for food 00:24:38.81\00:24:43.58 and if they're an orphan... 00:24:43.61\00:24:45.08 they're depending on you for everything, 00:24:45.11\00:24:47.08 so you get letters from them, you get reports from them, 00:24:47.12\00:24:50.65 so you know that you are doing something in the mission field, 00:24:50.69\00:24:55.59 now, the children should write to you, 00:24:55.62\00:24:57.89 you should write to them and you get their school report 00:24:57.93\00:25:01.96 and so, we're very personal about sponsorship, 00:25:02.00\00:25:05.53 it's got flow and a face... the parents' esteem is built up 00:25:05.57\00:25:09.97 because their child is having an education 00:25:10.01\00:25:12.57 so, it has an impact on the family and the community 00:25:12.61\00:25:16.01 but the other thing is too... 00:25:16.04\00:25:17.85 your money is going directly to a mission school 00:25:17.88\00:25:22.12 for the children so we only realized recently 00:25:22.15\00:25:26.19 the impact we're having because we pay the mission school 00:25:26.22\00:25:30.53 every month... so my tip... 00:25:30.56\00:25:33.09 I think it's important in life that you find 00:25:33.13\00:25:35.63 where you want to serve and where you want to help, 00:25:35.66\00:25:38.37 you shouldn't do something you're not comfortable with 00:25:38.40\00:25:41.14 but Outpatient Sponsorship, 00:25:41.17\00:25:43.97 you can sponsor an orphan, a blind school, 00:25:44.01\00:25:46.54 just a normal child that walks to school each day. 00:25:46.57\00:25:50.08 Helen: But I mean donations are good here and there as well, 00:25:50.11\00:25:52.51 you know... donations... 00:25:52.55\00:25:54.32 If you can't afford the monthly commitment, 00:25:54.35\00:25:56.08 we have an Unsponsored-Child Fund, 00:25:56.12\00:25:58.55 because whether a child's got a sponsor or not, 00:25:58.59\00:26:02.06 we cover them, and so, 00:26:02.09\00:26:05.36 if you can't afford that monthly commitment 00:26:05.39\00:26:07.76 and you just want to send a few dollars, 00:26:07.80\00:26:10.07 then the Unsponsored-Child Fund makes a huge difference. 00:26:10.10\00:26:14.04 So, that's really nice, what's your website, 00:26:14.10\00:26:16.37 do you have a website?
