I tried to stay away 00:04:07.78\00:04:13.31 from where I thought trouble might be 00:04:13.35\00:04:17.55 and I usually stayed with elderly people 00:04:17.59\00:04:21.72 because I felt that they could be a shield and a guide to me 00:04:21.76\00:04:27.20 because my father was killed in an automobile accident 00:04:27.23\00:04:32.33 when I was around nine or ten years old, 00:04:32.37\00:04:37.21 and for fatherly care... 00:04:37.24\00:04:40.21 so that I would be able to have some type of a key on life, 00:04:40.24\00:04:46.82 I worked through a gentleman by the name of Eli Hayes, 00:04:46.85\00:04:52.25 he was a staunch Christian and he used to have me 00:04:52.29\00:04:57.63 to read the Bible to him and by reading the Bible to him 00:04:57.66\00:05:04.53 and having a very active mind at that age, 00:05:04.57\00:05:08.87 I was able to retain a number of the passages of the Scripture 00:05:08.90\00:05:15.64 and when things came, 00:05:15.68\00:05:18.35 I would... I could be able to adjust them 00:05:18.38\00:05:22.58 by what I had read in the Bible... 00:05:22.62\00:05:25.75 Ah... 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.26 And then too... his office was just outside of the black... 00:05:27.29\00:05:36.97 what you might call, "black neighborhood" 00:05:37.00\00:05:38.90 and we didn't have too many policemen coming in at that time 00:05:38.93\00:05:45.87 and I was somewhat secluded from any... 00:05:45.91\00:05:50.55 the brutality that we have right now 00:05:50.58\00:05:55.18 and... which was worse back in those days 00:05:55.22\00:05:59.85 but thank the Lord... I came through it very well. 00:05:59.89\00:06:06.83 Yes, yes, so what you're saying is 00:06:06.86\00:06:09.90 God provided someone to mentor you 00:06:09.93\00:06:12.87 after your dad was killed, He had someone else there 00:06:12.93\00:06:17.67 and He had you reading the Bible and by doing that for him, 00:06:17.71\00:06:23.04 your life was changed. 00:06:23.08\00:06:24.68 My life was completely changed. 00:06:24.71\00:06:26.45 My! did you have brothers and sisters? 00:06:26.48\00:06:30.39 I had five brothers and one sister 00:06:30.42\00:06:34.06 after my mother's second marriage 00:06:34.12\00:06:37.73 she had six boys 00:06:37.79\00:06:39.83 and she didn't get a girl until after she married again. 00:06:39.89\00:06:44.03 Ah... okay... all right... all right... 00:06:44.07\00:06:48.64 so, when you had this... this mentor... 00:06:48.67\00:06:53.01 he was a Godly Christian man 00:06:53.04\00:06:56.08 and he spent time giving you like, putting values into you. 00:06:56.11\00:07:02.18 Very much so... 00:07:02.22\00:07:04.02 Did you go to church with him? 00:07:04.09\00:07:05.82 No, I never went to church with him, 00:07:05.85\00:07:07.92 I was doing just during the week days... I would go in... 00:07:07.96\00:07:11.69 I didn't play around much with the fellows, 00:07:11.73\00:07:15.66 I always went to him because what he was saying interested me 00:07:15.70\00:07:21.64 and I felt that if I could stay around him, 00:07:21.67\00:07:25.34 I could obtain values that would be helpful to me 00:07:25.37\00:07:30.51 in my later life which it did. 00:07:30.55\00:07:33.52 So, now, did you ever get into trouble as a teenager, 00:07:33.55\00:07:37.75 did you ever kind of hang out with the wrong crowd, 00:07:37.79\00:07:41.92 what did you do as a teenager? 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.36 I never got into any trouble and when I saw myself 00:07:43.43\00:07:48.40 mingling with those that I thought 00:07:48.46\00:07:52.57 might be troublesome to me, I moved away from them, 00:07:52.60\00:07:58.87 I stayed clear of what I thought might be troublesome. 00:07:58.94\00:08:05.18 Hmmm... so at Oakwood, 00:08:05.21\00:08:08.38 you taught Greek and Hebrew, correct? 00:08:08.42\00:08:12.65 I taught Greek largely, I started a Hebrew class 00:08:12.69\00:08:19.03 but the students were afraid of it 00:08:19.09\00:08:21.40 having taken Greek 00:08:21.43\00:08:23.26 I only had three persons in the... in the class. 00:08:23.30\00:08:28.50 I taught it for that quarter and then after that I decided 00:08:28.54\00:08:35.04 that I'd better just stick with Greek. 00:08:35.11\00:08:36.71 Now, what gave you your love for Biblical languages? 00:08:36.75\00:08:41.45 When I went to college, 00:08:41.48\00:08:46.22 our teacher brought out points in the Bible 00:08:46.25\00:08:52.86 that stimulated my thinking, 00:08:52.89\00:08:55.53 I saw Grammar... in a different light, 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.93 the sentences in Greek did not have to be in order as 00:08:58.97\00:09:04.27 subject, verb and... 00:09:04.31\00:09:06.37 Hmmm... 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.48 If you could put... any way you wanted 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.05 and you didn't follow the regular order, 00:09:11.11\00:09:13.55 whatever came first is the thing that you wished to emphasize 00:09:13.62\00:09:19.35 and when I read Saint John 1:1 to 3... 00:09:19.39\00:09:24.43 Yes... ah ha... 00:09:24.46\00:09:26.46 "In the beginning was the Word, 00:09:26.49\00:09:29.53 and the Word was with God... " 00:09:29.56\00:09:32.53 the subject came with the last word in the sentence 00:09:32.57\00:09:36.60 but you have an adverbial clause there... 00:09:36.64\00:09:39.37 Yvonne: Ah ha... 00:09:39.41\00:09:40.74 Dr. Rogers: to introduce it and then it started to the thinking, 00:09:40.78\00:09:45.81 "Why was this done?" 00:09:45.85\00:09:49.72 And since I knew that the emphasis was placed there 00:09:49.75\00:09:56.06 because... I marveled... I said, 00:09:56.09\00:10:00.26 "Well, what are they saying?" 00:10:00.30\00:10:03.73 Why did they say, "In the beginning was the Word?" 00:10:03.77\00:10:07.44 I just said, "Well, hmmm... 00:10:07.50\00:10:13.38 He had been speaking about He was God 00:10:13.41\00:10:15.74 because He said that He was God" 00:10:15.78\00:10:19.11 it says... they are talking about 00:10:19.15\00:10:22.42 maybe... the eternity of God 00:10:22.45\00:10:28.09 and they used in that a verb... the verb "to be... " 00:10:28.12\00:10:36.43 the imperfect tense of the verb "to be... " 00:10:36.46\00:10:39.90 and the imperfect tense... 00:10:39.93\00:10:42.27 usually starts with the time of his speaking, 00:10:42.30\00:10:46.17 or hearing or doing and then goes back... 00:10:46.24\00:10:50.05 and as far as you go back it will continue to go back 00:10:50.08\00:10:54.82 and there is no end to it whatsoever, 00:10:54.85\00:10:58.79 and so, as I read the text, it says, 00:10:58.85\00:11:03.73 "In the beginning was the Word... " 00:11:03.76\00:11:07.56 the Word was in the beginning... 00:11:07.60\00:11:11.33 the Word was before the beginning... 00:11:11.37\00:11:14.27 and when the beginning began, He already was. 00:11:14.30\00:11:17.97 Wow! and all that's in the Greek... 00:11:18.01\00:11:20.88 Dr. Rogers: Yes... Yvonne: Oh! 00:11:20.94\00:11:22.48 Dr. Rogers: And I said, "My! I'm going to stick with this" 00:11:22.51\00:11:28.25 because I saw new insights that I had never seen before 00:11:28.28\00:11:33.92 and I could see the eternity of God... 00:11:33.96\00:11:37.89 I could see God in all of His way. 00:11:37.96\00:11:41.76 Doc! that's rich... because... because there are some who say, 00:11:41.80\00:11:45.43 "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God 00:11:45.47\00:11:48.57 and the Word was 'a' God... " they add that article there 00:11:48.60\00:11:51.67 but in the Greek that article isn't there is it? 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.64 No, that article isn't there but when the article isn't there, 00:11:54.68\00:11:59.95 there is no need for a definite article... 00:11:59.98\00:12:02.32 Hmmm... 00:12:02.35\00:12:03.95 when the subject is definite itself... 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.55 Come on... come on Doc... 00:12:06.59\00:12:08.42 oh, I wish I had taken your class myself, 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.89 oh! that is so rich... 00:12:10.93\00:12:12.79 Yeah... it's... you... 00:12:12.86\00:12:14.66 that which is definite is just like saying, "Where is John?" 00:12:14.70\00:12:18.10 "He's at... he's at home... " 00:12:18.13\00:12:20.57 you don't need a definite article there 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.84 because it is definite already, he only has one... 00:12:22.87\00:12:26.47 Your right, that's right... that's right... 00:12:26.51\00:12:29.51 they're talking about, "Where is John?" 00:12:29.54\00:12:32.51 right? not "Where is 'a' John?" 00:12:32.55\00:12:34.82 "Where is John?" 00:12:34.85\00:12:36.18 And they know there is only one John 00:12:36.22\00:12:38.59 it's the guy with whom you're... 00:12:38.62\00:12:40.99 Yes, yes, so from that verse, you got the eternal existence 00:12:41.02\00:12:47.00 of Christ... the incarnate... 00:12:47.06\00:12:48.40 That's right... 00:12:48.43\00:12:49.76 ooh! that's rich... that's rich. 00:12:49.80\00:12:52.13 So, you have two verbs in Greek 00:12:52.20\00:12:56.50 one is the imperfect... 00:12:56.54\00:13:00.38 what we say, "the imperfect tense" 00:13:00.41\00:13:03.35 one is called the "Aorist Tense" in Greek, it's past tense... 00:13:03.38\00:13:08.28 to give you an example of the difference between the two, 00:13:08.35\00:13:14.32 when Jesus was talking to the Jews about His existence, 00:13:14.36\00:13:20.33 He says, "Before Abraham was... " 00:13:20.36\00:13:24.03 He didn't use "a" which is a form of the verb "to be" 00:13:24.07\00:13:28.27 which shows there is no beginning and no end... you see. 00:13:28.30\00:13:32.07 Yvonne: Ahh... Dr. Rogers: He's always present. 00:13:32.11\00:13:33.71 Yvonne: Right. 00:13:33.78\00:13:35.11 Dr. Rogers: He used the "Aorist Tense" which means, 00:13:35.14\00:13:38.55 "it happens then and it stopped" 00:13:38.58\00:13:40.72 But He says... and He didn't go back to the imperfect tense then 00:13:40.78\00:13:46.12 He started with the present tense, 00:13:46.15\00:13:48.22 He says, "I am... " 00:13:48.26\00:13:49.86 He says, "Abraham had a beginning" 00:13:49.89\00:13:55.26 but "I am" has no beginning and no end 00:13:55.30\00:14:00.64 it exists in the eternal present. 00:14:00.67\00:14:04.37 Oooooh! 00:14:04.44\00:14:06.68 And so, when I became acquainted with these particular aspects 00:14:06.71\00:14:13.01 of how it makes the Bible come alive 00:14:13.05\00:14:17.25 and how you can see things that you've never seen, 00:14:17.29\00:14:21.36 everything then became... oh, so dear to me 00:14:21.39\00:14:26.63 and I just loved it. 00:14:26.66\00:14:29.20 Oh! where did you learn it, 00:14:29.26\00:14:30.87 where did you go to school to learn it? 00:14:30.90\00:14:32.47 Oakwood, at that time, 00:14:32.53\00:14:34.97 did not have a Department of Biblical Languages, 00:14:35.00\00:14:39.37 it was just a Junior College at that time... when I graduated 00:14:39.41\00:14:42.91 back in 1941... and I've learned... 00:14:42.94\00:14:50.42 I started... I learned portions of what I now know 00:14:50.45\00:14:56.96 at Union College from Dr. Rolland 00:14:56.99\00:15:01.43 who was my Greek Instructor at the time, 00:15:01.46\00:15:04.60 but how to put it together and how to make Grammar stand out 00:15:04.63\00:15:10.51 and become edifying to those that hear 00:15:10.54\00:15:14.11 and meaningful to those that hear... 00:15:14.14\00:15:17.68 I got it at the Seminary. 00:15:17.71\00:15:19.78 Ahhh... that is so... to me, it's so exciting 00:15:19.81\00:15:23.79 because it's not just... like, when I read 00:15:23.82\00:15:27.76 the King James Version 00:15:27.79\00:15:29.52 I can read, "Before Abraham was... I am... " 00:15:29.56\00:15:33.03 but when you're reading it in the Greek or in Aramaic... 00:15:33.09\00:15:38.93 In the Greek... 00:15:38.97\00:15:41.04 In the Greek... it just... 00:15:41.07\00:15:42.40 it makes the whole thing come to life 00:15:42.47\00:15:45.31 because you're looking at not just what is said there 00:15:45.34\00:15:49.04 but those tenses and all of that, 00:15:49.08\00:15:51.68 you're conjugating all of that... 00:15:51.71\00:15:54.25 to me it's amazing! 00:15:54.32\00:15:56.52 You can say, in other words you could put it another way, 00:15:56.58\00:16:00.99 "Before Abraham came into being... I am... " 00:16:01.02\00:16:06.70 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:16:06.73\00:16:08.13 and "I am" is such a powerful statement isn't it? 00:16:08.16\00:16:11.37 In other words, 00:16:11.40\00:16:13.10 it is the equivalent to the word, "Jehovah. " 00:16:13.13\00:16:17.91 Whoa... and that's why they wanted to stone Him isn't it? 00:16:17.94\00:16:22.41 That's why they wanted to 00:16:22.44\00:16:23.85 because He was making Himself a God. 00:16:23.88\00:16:26.25 Yes, yes, yes, yes. 00:16:26.28\00:16:29.18 And there is no beginning and there is no end with the present 00:16:29.22\00:16:35.46 with "I am... " because "I am" has always been "I am" 00:16:35.49\00:16:42.16 "and I will always be I am, 00:16:42.20\00:16:44.67 there never was a time when I wasn't, 00:16:44.70\00:16:47.34 and there never is a time when I will not be... " 00:16:47.37\00:16:50.61 Yes. 00:16:50.64\00:16:51.97 So, He could say, to make that distinction 00:16:52.01\00:16:55.21 so He could let the Jews hear it, 00:16:55.24\00:16:56.58 they wanted to pick up a stone and stone Him 00:16:56.61\00:16:59.51 because they interpreted... they got His meaning, 00:16:59.55\00:17:04.09 "You are saying that you are God. " 00:17:04.12\00:17:07.42 Yes, yes... oh that is so rich, how did the students... 00:17:07.46\00:17:11.63 how did your students grasp the Greek, 00:17:11.66\00:17:15.36 were they eager to grasp it... 00:17:15.40\00:17:17.67 were they... how... how did they deal with it? 00:17:17.70\00:17:20.80 They were very, very eager, what we did, 00:17:20.84\00:17:24.61 I always gave something 00:17:24.67\00:17:28.18 that I thought that they would be able to use 00:17:28.24\00:17:31.01 in their sermonic preparation 00:17:31.05\00:17:34.32 because anytime you can bring out a new concept... 00:17:34.35\00:17:41.02 a new idea... maybe one that one could not otherwise know 00:17:41.06\00:17:47.63 unless he had some idea of what it was in the original 00:17:47.66\00:17:54.20 to give you an example, the word "peculiar" now 00:17:54.24\00:17:58.51 when you think of peculiar, what does it come... 00:17:58.54\00:18:02.78 what comes to your mind? 00:18:02.84\00:18:04.18 Strange... 00:18:04.21\00:18:05.55 Strange... queer... but back in 1611 00:18:05.58\00:18:08.85 when the King James Version was written 00:18:08.88\00:18:12.42 or when John wrote it, the word there meant... 00:18:12.45\00:18:17.46 back then "peculiar" meant there "a precious possession. " 00:18:17.49\00:18:21.93 Hmmm... 00:18:21.96\00:18:23.30 And when you look at the word itself, 00:18:23.33\00:18:27.74 it comes from a word, "perioúsios" 00:18:27.77\00:18:32.17 "peri" means...it's like a perimeter, it's a circle... 00:18:32.21\00:18:38.28 and "ousima... " the verb "to be" 00:18:38.31\00:18:41.28 "here I'm a being outside of the circle of God's grace, 00:18:41.32\00:18:46.32 but when I, by faith, accept Him as my Savior, 00:18:46.35\00:18:51.43 the circle which did not encircle me... now encircles me 00:18:51.46\00:18:58.10 and I am existing now in the circle of God's grace. " 00:18:58.13\00:19:04.71 Oh! Doc... oh, that is so good. 00:19:04.74\00:19:08.61 These are the things that made Greek so precious to me. 00:19:08.64\00:19:13.25 Yes... 00:19:13.28\00:19:14.62 And I enjoyed it immensely. 00:19:14.65\00:19:17.25 Yes, I can tell because I'm enjoying it right now, 00:19:17.29\00:19:20.42 and I'm sure our Viewers will enjoy it too, 00:19:20.46\00:19:23.16 just... it's like... digging deeply into the treasures 00:19:23.19\00:19:28.16 that are in the Bible that we don't even... 00:19:28.20\00:19:30.70 we don't even really know 00:19:30.73\00:19:32.57 because we don't know the Biblical languages. 00:19:32.60\00:19:34.24 That's right. 00:19:34.27\00:19:35.60 The deep, deep treasures, what's your favorite Bible text? 00:19:35.64\00:19:38.74 Oh, my favorite Bible text is 00:19:38.77\00:19:42.14 Saint John 15:7, 00:19:42.18\00:19:45.41 "If ye believe in me, 00:19:45.45\00:19:48.45 and my word... " 00:19:48.48\00:19:51.39 no, it really doesn't say "believe" 00:19:51.45\00:19:54.06 "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, 00:19:54.12\00:20:00.00 you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you. " 00:20:00.03\00:20:05.60 My wife, at that time, was dying from cancer, 00:20:05.63\00:20:13.14 they had given her only days to live 00:20:13.17\00:20:19.28 and I was by her bedside 00:20:19.31\00:20:23.82 and I was reading my Bible 00:20:23.85\00:20:28.29 and that text came across, I was you at that time 00:20:28.32\00:20:35.56 and I read it... I said, 00:20:35.60\00:20:40.24 "It says here, if you believe in me, 00:20:40.27\00:20:43.04 and my Word... " I keep saying "believe... " 00:20:43.07\00:20:47.38 that word there is "abide" 00:20:47.41\00:20:49.14 "If you abide in me and my words abide in you, 00:20:49.18\00:20:56.35 you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you. " 00:20:56.38\00:21:02.79 I looked at the word "done" 00:21:02.82\00:21:04.99 and the word "done" actually came from the word that means 00:21:05.06\00:21:13.47 "a beginning... " 00:21:13.50\00:21:15.37 I said, "Oh, what it is saying here 00:21:15.40\00:21:20.14 'if you believe in me and my words abide in you, 00:21:20.18\00:21:26.35 you shall ask what you will and if what you ask for 00:21:26.38\00:21:32.55 does not exist, I will bring it into existence 00:21:32.59\00:21:37.19 in order that your prayer might be answered. '" 00:21:37.23\00:21:41.80 Hmmm... 00:21:41.83\00:21:43.16 And I asked her, "Do you believe that?" 00:21:43.20\00:21:45.53 She said, "Yes... " 00:21:45.57\00:21:47.80 I said, "Can you think of anything 00:21:47.84\00:21:50.77 that might be between you and the Lord 00:21:50.81\00:21:54.04 so that He will not answer this prayer?" 00:21:54.08\00:21:57.25 She says, "No... " 00:21:57.28\00:21:59.21 because people were praying for her all around the world... 00:21:59.25\00:22:03.49 I said then, "Let's just pray... " 00:22:03.52\00:22:06.89 I said, "Lord, please bring into existence 00:22:06.92\00:22:11.26 a cure that never existed before 00:22:11.29\00:22:14.83 in order that she might be able to see as she desires 00:22:14.86\00:22:21.40 her children grow up... " 00:22:21.44\00:22:23.51 52 years later... 00:22:23.54\00:22:29.68 Ohhhh... are you kidding? 00:22:29.71\00:22:33.85 She was able to see all of her grandchildren 00:22:33.92\00:22:38.75 and her great-grandchildren and hold them on her lap, 00:22:38.79\00:22:44.19 I said, "That text from now on 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.26 will always be my favorite text. " 00:22:47.30\00:22:51.57 "If what you ask for does not exist, 00:22:51.60\00:22:55.87 I will bring it into existence 00:22:55.90\00:22:59.64 in order that your prayer might be answered. " 00:22:59.67\00:23:04.05 Oh... 00:23:04.08\00:23:05.41 This is why I love Biblical languages. 00:23:05.45\00:23:07.78 Yes, that is so beautiful 00:23:07.85\00:23:10.65 so she only had days to live according to the doctor? 00:23:10.69\00:23:14.86 Yeah... according to the doctors 00:23:14.89\00:23:16.22 and this was 50... 51 or 52 years later 00:23:16.26\00:23:22.83 she was still fondling her great-grandson. 00:23:22.86\00:23:26.10 Praise the Lord... what a blessing. 00:23:26.13\00:23:29.37 This is... you can see why Biblical... 00:23:29.40\00:23:32.54 and I try to make it practical, I knew that my students would... 00:23:32.57\00:23:39.38 some of my students... 00:23:39.41\00:23:40.75 we have some that were very scholarly... very scholarly... 00:23:40.78\00:23:45.35 very good theologians 00:23:45.39\00:23:49.09 and... but I knew that 00:23:49.12\00:23:52.76 the majority of them were there... taking it 00:23:52.79\00:23:56.87 because they had to take it in order to get a grade. 00:23:56.90\00:24:00.27 It was a requirement... 00:24:00.30\00:24:01.70 Exactly... I didn't want them to be spending their money 00:24:01.77\00:24:05.27 for something that would not benefit them in the end 00:24:05.31\00:24:08.81 and so, I used practical illustrations, 00:24:08.84\00:24:13.25 I used words too... that I knew that they would be using 00:24:13.28\00:24:18.62 in their sermons and gave them illustrations 00:24:18.65\00:24:23.96 from the Word itself and how the Greek shed light 00:24:23.99\00:24:28.60 upon the text and they appreciated it, 00:24:28.63\00:24:35.34 they never missed class hardly 00:24:35.37\00:24:37.67 because they felt that they would miss something 00:24:37.71\00:24:41.38 if they were not there to get it. 00:24:41.41\00:24:43.55 Yes... yes... and the Lord has blessed you so much, 00:24:43.58\00:24:49.75 He blessed you in your home life, 00:24:49.78\00:24:52.45 He blessed you in your ministry, He blessed you as a Professor 00:24:52.52\00:24:57.06 and a few years ago, you had lost your first wife, 00:24:57.09\00:25:01.26 He blessed you with another wife, 00:25:01.30\00:25:03.26 you got married at... how old were you Doc? 00:25:03.30\00:25:07.74 My wife was 91 years old and I was 93... 00:25:07.77\00:25:12.17 Yvonne: Oh... look at that... 00:25:12.21\00:25:14.11 Dr. Rogers: And I told her, 00:25:14.18\00:25:16.01 I said, "Most people say 'life begins at 40... '" 00:25:16.04\00:25:20.52 I said, "but today... we have changed that... 00:25:20.55\00:25:24.95 life now begins at 90... " 00:25:24.99\00:25:28.22 Come on...
