Did you know that there's a private bank 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.66 for the working poor? 00:00:02.70\00:00:04.03 Well stay tuned to meet a man 00:00:04.07\00:00:05.50 who will inspire hope for your economic future. 00:00:05.53\00:00:07.90 My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.60 and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:09.64\00:00:11.47 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:34.93\00:00:37.00 My guest today is Ryan Mack, 00:00:37.03\00:00:39.33 Market President of the Mid-Atlantic Region 00:00:39.37\00:00:41.77 for Operation HOPE. 00:00:41.80\00:00:43.14 Ryan is a frequent contributor to CNN and CNBC. 00:00:43.17\00:00:46.71 He has been featured in African American Family, 00:00:46.81\00:00:50.38 The Source and NV Magazine, 00:00:50.41\00:00:52.31 contributes regularly to Huffingtonpost. com 00:00:52.35\00:00:55.55 The Network Journal, Fortune and Black Enterprise, 00:00:55.58\00:00:59.09 received the Top 40 Under 40 Achievement Award 00:00:59.12\00:01:02.66 from the Network Journal and received Tom Joyner's 00:01:02.69\00:01:06.23 "Hardest Working Financial Advisor Award" 00:01:06.26\00:01:08.63 because of his efforts to empower the Community 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.63 with the crucial life skills of financial literacy. 00:01:11.67\00:01:14.60 Welcome to Urban Report Ryan. 00:01:14.64\00:01:16.91 Thank you so much Yvonne 00:01:16.97\00:01:18.37 for the work that you all are doing each and every day 00:01:18.41\00:01:21.21 I'm so pleased to be here with you. 00:01:21.24\00:01:23.85 Well, thank you, we are blessed to have you 00:01:23.91\00:01:26.08 and we are so appreciative of the work that you're doing 00:01:26.11\00:01:29.32 because financial literacy is so... so important. 00:01:29.35\00:01:33.42 So many people just don't know 00:01:33.46\00:01:35.86 how to do basic things, would you agree with that? 00:01:35.92\00:01:39.29 Absolutely, I mean, knowledge is power 00:01:39.33\00:01:41.90 it says very clearly in the Bible, 00:01:41.93\00:01:44.47 "Our love must not be a thing of words and fine talk 00:01:44.50\00:01:47.64 it must be a thing of action and sincerity. " 00:01:47.67\00:01:50.14 So, if we really love our community, 00:01:50.17\00:01:52.04 if we really want to do something, 00:01:52.07\00:01:53.94 we can't just talk about it, 00:01:54.01\00:01:55.34 we have to have some action behind it. 00:01:55.38\00:01:57.38 And when you're talking about faith, 00:01:57.41\00:01:59.31 faith is one of the most substantial things 00:01:59.35\00:02:01.38 and one of the most empowering things 00:02:01.45\00:02:03.08 any individual can do in the Community 00:02:03.12\00:02:04.75 faith being comprised of belief 00:02:04.79\00:02:07.66 that tomorrow... a better and brighter day is going to come 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.93 but then action... that's coupled with that belief 00:02:10.96\00:02:13.53 and then with those two things... you have faith 00:02:13.60\00:02:16.10 and financial literacy... 00:02:16.13\00:02:17.93 if you want to have substantial action 00:02:17.97\00:02:20.40 it teaches individuals of what can I do 00:02:20.44\00:02:22.50 as far as financial... finance is concerned, 00:02:22.54\00:02:24.61 what can I do to empower myself. 00:02:24.64\00:02:26.14 When I first started working with gang members, 00:02:26.17\00:02:28.18 the first young man that I worked with 00:02:28.21\00:02:30.65 he came to me 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.18 and he was the leader of the "Bloods" in Brooklyn. 00:02:32.21\00:02:34.28 He just came out of prison, he had 300 dollars to his name 00:02:34.32\00:02:37.45 and he didn't know a whole lot about money, 00:02:37.49\00:02:39.32 he said, "Ryan, what am I supposed to do?" 00:02:39.35\00:02:41.46 I've got 300 dollars, I'm basically homeless. 00:02:41.49\00:02:43.49 So, I taught him about going to Inc-It-Now and forming an LLC. 00:02:43.59\00:02:47.76 I taught him about budgeting, 00:02:47.76\00:02:50.00 I taught him on how to form a business, 00:02:50.03\00:02:52.17 I taught him on how to go to get a GED, 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.27 I taught him about how to get an Electrician's certificate 00:02:54.30\00:02:57.44 from different Organizations in the neighborhood, 00:02:57.47\00:03:00.28 so all these things exposed him to... the light of... 00:03:00.31\00:03:02.88 "Wow, you know what? Now I can form my own business" 00:03:02.91\00:03:05.48 and 12 months later, he had ten employees 00:03:05.51\00:03:07.45 and two project managers, most of them... other "Bloods" 00:03:07.52\00:03:10.22 and now... it really... was just as simple as that, 00:03:10.29\00:03:14.39 just flicking on that switch of hope. 00:03:14.42\00:03:15.99 Flicking on that switch and saying, 00:03:16.02\00:03:17.86 "You know what? I can start a business, 00:03:17.93\00:03:19.73 I can manage my money, 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.06 selling drugs is not the only way for me 00:03:21.10\00:03:23.53 because I now know better 00:03:23.57\00:03:25.07 so I now know how to do better 00:03:25.10\00:03:26.90 and lot of us spend our time judging others 00:03:26.94\00:03:29.87 and judging as to why individuals 00:03:29.97\00:03:31.57 just want to rob and steal, 00:03:31.61\00:03:32.94 you know why most people steal? 00:03:32.97\00:03:34.91 At least the ones that I've talked to? 00:03:34.94\00:03:36.61 If you ask them, why do they rob and steal? 00:03:36.64\00:03:39.31 They'll say, "You know what, Ryan, 00:03:39.35\00:03:40.72 I saw someone have a jacket on and I saw that jacket 00:03:40.78\00:03:44.32 and I saw that as a means to feed my child. " 00:03:44.35\00:03:47.66 "I saw that as a means to feed my family. " 00:03:47.69\00:03:50.89 Now, I'm not condoning theft and I would never do that 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.56 and that's absolutely the wrong thing 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.76 but if we're not teaching our Communities 00:03:55.83\00:03:58.10 and not embracing them, 00:03:58.13\00:03:59.77 doing the principles of what the Word... 00:03:59.80\00:04:01.47 of what you all teach every single day with your Network, 00:04:01.50\00:04:03.91 teaching them what the Word 00:04:03.94\00:04:05.27 teaches about the right way to go about doing things, 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.61 then individuals are going to choose the wrong way, 00:04:07.68\00:04:10.05 I mean, how can we begrudge anyone 00:04:10.08\00:04:11.91 if all they see is pimps and drug dealers and pushers 00:04:11.98\00:04:15.32 as role models in their Community, 00:04:15.35\00:04:17.12 if that's what they're going to do, 00:04:17.19\00:04:18.89 they're role modeling what their version of success is, 00:04:18.92\00:04:22.12 so, we were talking about financial literacy 00:04:22.19\00:04:24.49 and then we couple on top of that, 00:04:24.53\00:04:26.43 we have individuals... 00:04:26.46\00:04:27.76 we have the 360 billion dollar elephant in the room 00:04:27.83\00:04:31.20 which are financial predators that essentially capitalize 00:04:31.23\00:04:34.94 off of ignorance, that's... so... these are things... 00:04:34.97\00:04:38.67 financial literacy is the answer to a lot of our solutions... 00:04:38.71\00:04:42.34 economic solutions in our communities 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.55 that we must implement as soon as possible. 00:04:44.58\00:04:46.78 Absolutely, you know, and that's such a good point 00:04:46.82\00:04:50.49 that 360 billion... is that what you said? 00:04:50.55\00:04:53.82 Yes ma'am, yes... 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.19 What is that elephant in the room? Tell us about that. 00:04:55.22\00:04:57.73 What is the 360 billion dollar elephant? 00:04:57.76\00:05:00.26 I'm in Detroit right now 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.06 and as you walk down the street in Detroit, what do you see? 00:05:02.10\00:05:05.93 You see Check Cashing places, you see Payday Loans, 00:05:05.97\00:05:09.14 you see Cash Advances, you see Title Loans, 00:05:09.17\00:05:11.51 you see Refund Anticipation Loans, 00:05:11.54\00:05:13.68 you see Weed Refineries, 00:05:13.71\00:05:15.91 you see Pawn Shops, you see Rent-a-Centers, 00:05:15.98\00:05:18.85 you see Rent-a-Center stores, all of these are businesses 00:05:18.88\00:05:22.85 that are designed for short-term gain, maximizing... 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.59 or trying to capitalize, rather, off of the ignorance, 00:05:26.62\00:05:30.33 again, there's nothing wrong with being ignorant 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.26 but there is something wrong with staying ignorant. 00:05:32.29\00:05:35.20 So, if you are going to the Check Cashing place, 00:05:35.23\00:05:37.93 you don't know how to open up a bank account. 00:05:37.97\00:05:40.64 We... with Operation HOPE, we do a lot of work 00:05:40.70\00:05:43.27 with those individuals who are underserved, 00:05:43.30\00:05:45.84 and I'll tell you, in Detroit, I saw one Grocery Store 00:05:45.87\00:05:49.68 that is earning a half a million dollars a year more 00:05:49.74\00:05:53.52 since they inserted check cashing 00:05:53.58\00:05:56.32 into their revenue stream. 00:05:56.35\00:05:57.79 They put a Check Cashing Facility 00:05:57.82\00:05:59.52 inside of the grocery store 00:05:59.59\00:06:01.02 and now they're earning a half a million dollars a year more 00:06:01.09\00:06:03.96 off of fees being taken from those who again... 00:06:03.99\00:06:07.23 they need those fees to feed their children 00:06:07.23\00:06:10.47 to put clothes on their backs, to keep a roof over their head, 00:06:10.50\00:06:13.00 but they're giving these fees... excessive fees, 00:06:13.03\00:06:15.20 to the financial predators in the Community 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.81 who are... essentially betting on the fact 00:06:17.84\00:06:20.38 that they're not going to learn how to open bank accounts 00:06:20.41\00:06:22.41 they're not going to learn... 00:06:22.44\00:06:23.98 there are a lot of people in our neighborhoods 00:06:24.05\00:06:25.85 are living check to Tuesday 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.32 and they can't make it to the next pay day 00:06:27.35\00:06:29.55 so they go to the Payday Loan, 00:06:29.58\00:06:31.12 we had someone come into our offices the other day... 00:06:31.15\00:06:32.99 she came in with a 300 dollar loan 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.46 or she took out a 300 dollar loan 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.86 six weeks later after two extensions... 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.40 two two-week extensions she owed 1,245 dollars 00:06:40.43\00:06:45.50 Yvonne: No, from the 300 dollar loan? 00:06:45.53\00:06:48.30 Absolutely, this is what's happening in our communities. 00:06:48.34\00:06:51.17 They're betting on the fact... these financial predators... 00:06:51.21\00:06:54.04 it's an industry based upon... that we want to bet 00:06:54.08\00:06:57.81 that these individuals 00:06:57.85\00:06:59.25 will never learn how to improve their credit, 00:06:59.28\00:07:01.48 open up bank accounts, start their own businesses, 00:07:01.52\00:07:04.05 accumulate wealth, 00:07:04.12\00:07:05.45 there's a new term that I've tried to conjure up, 00:07:05.49\00:07:07.89 pushing as hard as possible, 00:07:07.92\00:07:09.26 everybody's heard of gentrification, 00:07:09.29\00:07:10.86 what Operation HOPE is trying to promote 00:07:10.89\00:07:13.16 is internal gentrification, 00:07:13.19\00:07:15.06 and gentrification is essentially the perspective of: 00:07:15.10\00:07:18.00 you have people that move in from outside of the Community 00:07:18.03\00:07:22.24 who have higher wealth there, higher income 00:07:22.27\00:07:24.94 and they start buying up properties 00:07:24.97\00:07:26.44 that people inside of the communities... 00:07:26.47\00:07:27.81 because of high poverty rates... couldn't normally afford. 00:07:27.84\00:07:30.18 But if we promote internal gentrification, 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.62 what that means is that, if we educate our people, 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.38 teach them about how to start businesses, 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.32 teach them how to improve their credit scores 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.26 from 500 to over 700 credit scores, 00:07:40.29\00:07:42.26 you know, 700-credit score communities don't riot, 00:07:42.29\00:07:45.16 name me one 700-credit score community... 00:07:45.19\00:07:47.60 and I've marched... I've marched in Ferguson... 00:07:47.66\00:07:50.07 I marched in Ferguson for Mike Brown, 00:07:50.13\00:07:52.87 I marched in New York for Eric Gardener, 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.50 I marched in Cleveland for Tamir Rice, 00:07:55.54\00:07:58.11 Baltimore for Freddie Gray, 00:07:58.14\00:07:59.64 I've been marching and my feet hurt, 00:07:59.71\00:08:02.08 we have to figure out a way to do something beyond marching 00:08:02.11\00:08:06.38 to give ourselves a tangible Community 00:08:06.41\00:08:08.18 and those communities that are rioting, 00:08:08.22\00:08:10.32 those are 500-credit score communities 00:08:10.35\00:08:12.59 that are indicative of high poverty rates 00:08:12.62\00:08:14.86 that are essentially... 00:08:14.89\00:08:16.22 that don't know of any other alternative 00:08:16.26\00:08:18.59 and a large part of that is economic, 00:08:18.66\00:08:21.03 if we can solve that economic piece of the puzzle, 00:08:21.06\00:08:24.00 then we'll be able to start to see 00:08:24.07\00:08:26.07 those check cashing places 00:08:26.10\00:08:27.70 turn into Credit Unions and Banks. 00:08:27.74\00:08:29.40 We'll see those liquor stores turning into convenient stores, 00:08:29.44\00:08:31.97 we'll see those weed... they're trying to raise the 00:08:32.01\00:08:34.98 the economy of the trend right now 00:08:35.01\00:08:37.08 with the revenue from weed refineries and liquor. 00:08:37.15\00:08:40.12 So, essentially what they're saying is, 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.95 we want to make money off of you, 00:08:41.98\00:08:43.39 as long as you stay high and drunk all day, 00:08:43.42\00:08:45.82 we'll be able to keep our bottom line solid, 00:08:45.89\00:08:48.29 that's not a way to build the economy, 00:08:48.32\00:08:50.26 that's only the way to capitalize off of a few 00:08:50.33\00:08:53.29 who want to pimp those individuals 00:08:53.33\00:08:55.10 who are poor in our communities 00:08:55.13\00:08:56.87 and they take that money back to their communities, 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.30 while the people in the community, 00:08:59.37\00:09:01.07 essentially stay poor and impoverished 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.10 and that's not a winning business model 00:09:03.14\00:09:04.97 we need a win-win... we're talking about 00:09:05.01\00:09:06.81 inclusive economics and increasing disparity of income, 00:09:06.84\00:09:10.88 there are few at the top who are not necessarily, 00:09:10.91\00:09:14.25 who are essentially... 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.92 we need to broaden the base of our economic base 00:09:16.95\00:09:19.42 so more people have an opportunity 00:09:19.45\00:09:20.99 to sit at the table of economic opportunity 00:09:21.02\00:09:23.32 that's what Operation HOPE is really all about 00:09:23.36\00:09:25.66 and that's what we're promoting. 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.40 Wow, you gave me so much to chew on right there, 00:09:27.50\00:09:31.13 I mean... it's... you know... are people... the Bible says 00:09:31.20\00:09:34.97 "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" 00:09:35.00\00:09:38.31 and if we don't... what you don't know... 00:09:38.34\00:09:41.58 if we don't know to do something 00:09:41.61\00:09:43.55 then you're going to do it the wrong way. 00:09:43.58\00:09:45.61 You're going to covet that jacket 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.75 and you're going to think that stealing 00:09:47.82\00:09:50.92 is the only way to make money for your family 00:09:50.99\00:09:54.56 but what you're telling us... is that there is a better way, 00:09:54.59\00:09:57.99 God has a better way, there is a better way, 00:09:58.03\00:10:00.33 you don't have to steal to feed your family, 00:10:00.40\00:10:02.63 if you know what to do over here, 00:10:02.66\00:10:04.97 if you know that... if you can get that GED 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.97 or if you know that you can open a bank account... 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.67 because you don't even know that you can do that 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.24 you think that that's too hard for you 00:10:13.27\00:10:14.98 that's not for you, 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.34 "let me just take my check over here 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.51 and cash it over here and get the money 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.08 from the check cashing place and pay them. " 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.65 I know someone too who got a loan from 00:10:23.69\00:10:27.22 one of those loan sharks, got... 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.56 it was about 300 or 500 dollars 00:10:29.59\00:10:32.09 and ended up in like 1,500 dollars 00:10:32.13\00:10:34.56 for a 300 dollar loan, 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.80 it's like... "What are you thinking? 00:10:36.83\00:10:38.60 What are you thinking?" 00:10:38.63\00:10:41.17 Well, I mean, the Bible also says, 00:10:41.20\00:10:43.94 "Of what use is money... in the hand of a fool 00:10:43.97\00:10:46.71 if they have no desire to obtain wisdom?" 00:10:46.74\00:10:49.34 And a lot of individuals 00:10:49.38\00:10:52.61 and the 70-billion-dollar elephant in the room, 00:10:52.65\00:10:54.98 is the Lottery Industry... that essentially is saying that, 00:10:55.02\00:10:59.39 "Hey, you know what? 00:10:59.42\00:11:01.59 We have a lot of folks today... there's a part... 00:11:01.62\00:11:04.13 there's a negative correlation between education 00:11:04.16\00:11:06.13 and the rates in which people play the lottery. 00:11:06.16\00:11:07.86 Those individuals who are earning 00:11:07.93\00:11:10.63 less than 25,000 dollars a year will on average spend about 00:11:10.67\00:11:13.90 600 dollars a year on lottery tickets. 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.17 Those individuals who are earning over 00:11:16.24\00:11:18.51 a 100,000 dollars a year... 00:11:18.54\00:11:19.87 usually have a little more education 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.48 will spend about 300 dollars a year on lottery tickets. 00:11:21.51\00:11:24.91 Those individuals who are earning 13,000 dollars a year 00:11:24.95\00:11:28.32 will spend upwards... on average... 00:11:28.35\00:11:29.68 about 10 percent of their income on lottery tickets. 00:11:29.72\00:11:31.95 We have a lot of these individuals around here 00:11:31.99\00:11:34.26 who... there's one... in Chicago, 00:11:34.29\00:11:36.46 there's one small zip code in Chicago 00:11:36.52\00:11:38.73 that's spending almost 27 million dollars a year 00:11:38.76\00:11:41.36 on the South side of Chicago, on lottery tickets. 00:11:41.40\00:11:44.10 Yvonne: 27,000 million? 00:11:44.13\00:11:45.80 27 million and then... this is just... again... 00:11:45.83\00:11:50.04 the Bible says it clearly 00:11:50.07\00:11:51.94 "Of what use is money in the hand of a fool 00:11:51.97\00:11:54.21 if they have no desire to obtain wisdom?" 00:11:54.24\00:11:56.41 We're chasing the wrong thing, we're chasing money... 00:11:56.44\00:11:59.25 we need to be chasing faith, we need to be chasing values 00:11:59.28\00:12:02.12 and I tell people all the time, 00:12:02.15\00:12:04.22 I say, "Listen, money is not the blessing, 00:12:04.29\00:12:07.06 money is the symptom of the blessing," 00:12:07.16\00:12:10.36 money is... essentially it's like... 00:12:10.43\00:12:13.60 if you see the leaves of the branches of the trees move... 00:12:13.63\00:12:17.80 people say, "Well, that's the wind" 00:12:17.83\00:12:19.33 I say, "No, that's not the wind... 00:12:19.37\00:12:20.80 you can't see the wind, 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.17 you just see the result of the wind blowing. " 00:12:22.20\00:12:25.11 When you are truly blessed 00:12:25.14\00:12:27.44 you have those blessings inside, 00:12:27.48\00:12:29.71 you... the blessings start to move and all of a sudden, 00:12:29.74\00:12:32.51 you start to move just like those branches of the tree, 00:12:32.55\00:12:35.22 and you start to produce like the tree, 00:12:35.25\00:12:37.75 we've been so accustomed to eating from the tree, 00:12:37.79\00:12:40.32 we don't even know that we can be like the tree itself. 00:12:40.36\00:12:43.22 So, as we start to learn how to be producers 00:12:43.26\00:12:47.23 as opposed to only consumers, 00:12:47.36\00:12:48.66 we know that in order to do that rely on these blessings 00:12:48.70\00:12:52.53 that are inside of here that God gave you from day one 00:12:52.57\00:12:55.64 from before you were even conceived... you have them, 00:12:55.67\00:12:58.71 so if we learn about those things 00:12:58.74\00:13:00.78 then we can learn to say, "You know what? 00:13:00.81\00:13:03.11 Hey, I can do like they did in Lima, Peru, 00:13:03.14\00:13:05.41 that engineer that said that they have essentially 00:13:05.45\00:13:08.75 there was a drought, and that engineer in Lima, Peru, 00:13:08.78\00:13:11.85 took a billboard and he did some whole... technological stuff 00:13:11.89\00:13:15.86 and I'm not an expert on what he actually did... 00:13:15.89\00:13:18.46 but he humidified the air 00:13:18.49\00:13:21.66 and makes 90 liters of water per day from thin air... 00:13:21.70\00:13:25.70 so when people... now... before they didn't have water 00:13:25.73\00:13:29.70 but because someone believed what he had inside, 00:13:29.74\00:13:31.91 he had that knowledge... he creates water out of thin air. 00:13:31.94\00:13:34.61 There's someone in India... 00:13:34.64\00:13:36.08 they were poor, they were in poverty, 00:13:36.11\00:13:38.38 someone looked at it, he said, 00:13:38.41\00:13:40.48 "You know what... I can do something with this clay," 00:13:40.52\00:13:42.85 he took the clay... he molded it into refrigerators 00:13:42.88\00:13:45.19 and started to sell them and he fed his family literally 00:13:45.22\00:13:48.42 making usable refrigerators 00:13:48.46\00:13:50.33 that kept food fresh for four days on end 00:13:50.39\00:13:52.83 inside of dirt... he made something out of nothing... 00:13:52.86\00:13:55.90 how does that happen? 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.50 Because people believe that they have something 00:13:57.53\00:14:00.74 inside of them and don't let their current 00:14:00.77\00:14:03.04 circumstances dictate on how far they can go 00:14:03.07\00:14:05.31 and they learn this thing called "contentment... " 00:14:05.34\00:14:07.74 "I'm not happy with my state, I'm happy in my state. " 00:14:07.78\00:14:11.18 But financial literacy says that yes you have the skills 00:14:11.21\00:14:14.55 and ability to do all you think, 00:14:14.58\00:14:16.18 we're going to remove money as an obstacle from your success, 00:14:16.25\00:14:19.02 we're going to make it an asset to your success 00:14:19.09\00:14:21.92 so you can build and create anything you want. 00:14:21.96\00:14:24.76 Most of the majority of SP 500 00:14:24.79\00:14:26.56 were formed in times just like today. 00:14:26.59\00:14:29.70 CNN, LexisNexis, Trader Joe's, 00:14:29.73\00:14:33.13 GM... all these... Sports Illustrated... 00:14:33.17\00:14:36.27 all these are companies that were formed 00:14:36.30\00:14:39.37 in times of economic crisis, 00:14:39.41\00:14:42.91 the first Apple store opened in 2001, 00:14:42.94\00:14:45.75 it was deemed to be a failure, 00:14:45.81\00:14:47.75 by 2008 it was deemed to be recessive-proof, 00:14:47.78\00:14:50.75 they opened it in time of a recession 00:14:50.85\00:14:53.52 where everyone said, "You shouldn't do it. " 00:14:53.56\00:14:55.09 Financial Literacy again... it allows individuals to remove 00:14:55.12\00:14:58.93 money as an inhibitor of their success 00:14:58.96\00:15:01.96 and helps them create better FICO Scores 00:15:02.00\00:15:04.93 helps them learn how to budget, 00:15:04.97\00:15:06.67 helps them learn how to put some money aside 00:15:06.74\00:15:08.87 so that they can start their business, 00:15:08.90\00:15:10.24 helps them learn how to put some money aside 00:15:10.31\00:15:11.81 so they can start a house 00:15:11.84\00:15:13.17 so we can leave a legacy to our families 00:15:13.21\00:15:15.11 and not leave it to the reverse mortgages 00:15:15.14\00:15:17.18 in trying to pimp our elderly in our communities, 00:15:17.25\00:15:19.45 this is what financial Literacy is doing everyday 00:15:19.48\00:15:21.72 and this is why Operation HOPE 00:15:21.75\00:15:23.08 is the people that I chose to be a part of... about a year ago 00:15:23.12\00:15:25.59 to actually start a national movement. 00:15:25.62\00:15:27.89 And give us a little history on Operation HOPE. 00:15:27.92\00:15:31.49 Operation HOPE was formed in 1992, 00:15:31.53\00:15:34.30 Chairman John Bryant had a strong vision, 00:15:34.36\00:15:36.73 he's been my mentor for about six or seven years 00:15:36.77\00:15:39.20 even before I joined HOPE 00:15:39.27\00:15:41.34 and he saw Compton burning from the LA Riots 00:15:41.37\00:15:44.87 and said, "I want to do something about it" 00:15:44.91\00:15:46.37 he has his own investment management company 00:15:46.41\00:15:48.44 and he went back to his hometown of Compton 00:15:48.48\00:15:50.41 and he did a banking tour, 00:15:50.51\00:15:52.15 he took some banks and toured through Compton 00:15:52.18\00:15:54.35 and he saw that there were people in the neighborhoods 00:15:54.38\00:15:56.85 and he saw them... 00:15:56.89\00:15:58.22 there are many people in our neighborhoods 00:15:58.25\00:15:59.95 and I quote, unquote, "Eew" 00:16:00.09\00:16:01.86 that most people... stigmatized and they saw negative pictures 00:16:01.89\00:16:06.03 and they saw these negative images on television 00:16:06.06\00:16:08.26 so, he took them to the "hood" 00:16:08.30\00:16:10.97 and showed them that there are many middle-class individuals 00:16:11.00\00:16:14.07 viable... economically viable families 00:16:14.14\00:16:16.91 that we could invest in and that we could throw our arms around 00:16:16.94\00:16:19.84 and they can produce and be viable tax-paying citizens 00:16:19.87\00:16:23.85 and can add value to the overall community, 00:16:23.88\00:16:27.12 from 1992... long story short... till today... 00:16:27.15\00:16:30.22 Operation HOPE has helped to direct almost 2 billion... 00:16:30.29\00:16:33.25 with the "b... " billion dollars of private capital 00:16:33.29\00:16:36.22 into underserved communities. 00:16:36.29\00:16:38.03 They've helped over 2.6 million clients, 00:16:38.06\00:16:41.70 and that number is growing every single day... 00:16:41.73\00:16:44.30 they have over 22,000 volunteers, 00:16:44.37\00:16:47.50 they have a footprint of some sort whether it be youth 00:16:47.60\00:16:50.67 or volunteers or adults in over 300 cities 00:16:50.71\00:16:53.58 and we just have contractors being sited in places like 00:16:53.64\00:16:57.21 Abu Dhabi, Morocco, UAE... 00:16:57.25\00:16:59.91 then all throughout the United States 00:17:00.05\00:17:02.25 and it is the first private bank for the working poor, 00:17:02.28\00:17:05.95 for the first time... someone can now... 00:17:05.99\00:17:08.52 as they look at a check cashing place... 00:17:08.56\00:17:10.96 because our mission is to shut down 00:17:10.99\00:17:12.93 check cashing places... one at a time, 00:17:12.96\00:17:15.06 we are no longer accepting the fact 00:17:15.10\00:17:17.17 that you are going to pimp on the ignorance of our communities 00:17:17.20\00:17:19.27 without fighting, 00:17:19.30\00:17:20.64 and we don't fight them by picketing, 00:17:20.67\00:17:22.77 if we don't fight them by rabble rousing, 00:17:22.80\00:17:24.84 we fight them by putting up a HOPE inside business model 00:17:24.87\00:17:28.38 across the street, right across the street 00:17:28.41\00:17:31.05 from that check cashing place 00:17:31.08\00:17:33.42 so if they're going to come to our people with ignorance, 00:17:33.45\00:17:35.75 we're going to come to our people with education 00:17:35.78\00:17:37.92 with knowledge and tangible things 00:17:37.95\00:17:40.76 where our people can improve their credit for free, 00:17:40.79\00:17:42.69 my motto is... "Free 99" 00:17:42.72\00:17:44.89 or don't pay a dime, just spend your time 00:17:44.93\00:17:47.93 and so, when people come to our offices, 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.87 they can do as much as they like, 00:17:50.93\00:17:52.27 they can sit down once a week, twice a week if they have time, 00:17:52.30\00:17:55.34 and helped as long as you need, 00:17:55.37\00:17:57.37 they're going to walk out of our office 00:17:57.41\00:17:58.74 with a 30-day Plan and we say, "Come back... 00:19:39.31\00:19:41.08 From Banks... again... 00:19:41.11\00:19:42.78 of the largest 50 banks in the Country, 00:19:42.81\00:19:44.98 38 are our partners, they fund us, 00:19:45.01\00:19:47.82 they sit on our Board, they volunteer for us, 00:19:47.85\00:19:50.99 we get private funding, 00:19:51.02\00:19:52.35 we've got private monies from the ED... 00:19:52.39\00:19:54.69 we have tons of national relationships as well, 00:19:54.72\00:19:57.03 John Bryant sits on the Advisory Council 00:19:57.06\00:19:59.39 for President Obama 00:19:59.43\00:20:01.03 and he also served with President Bush, 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.10 and he also served with President Clinton, 00:20:03.13\00:20:05.13 and he also served with President Bush one, 00:20:05.17\00:20:07.54 so, he's got connections from the top down 00:20:07.60\00:20:09.87 so he's not partisan and no one in HOPE cares about 00:20:09.90\00:20:13.74 the Democrat or Republican, it's not about that, 00:20:13.78\00:20:17.51 it's not Democrat or Republican, it's not about black or white, 00:20:17.55\00:20:20.78 it's about dreams... and it's about what can we do 00:20:20.88\00:20:24.15 in a non-partisan way to help all our people 00:20:24.19\00:20:27.42 whether those are poor urban people, 00:20:27.52\00:20:29.19 whether those are poor, rural individuals in the Appalachians, 00:20:29.22\00:20:33.09 so, it doesn't matter where they come from, 00:20:33.13\00:20:35.83 if they got low credit scores and they need some hope, 00:20:35.86\00:20:38.53 they need to come to Operation HOPE, 00:20:38.57\00:20:40.17 we are giving them free assistance every single day. 00:20:40.20\00:20:43.44 Wow! what's your website? 00:20:43.47\00:20:44.81 We're going to put your website up 00:20:44.84\00:20:47.31 so that people know how to contact you 00:20:47.34\00:20:49.74 because this is... this is a critical, critical 00:20:49.78\00:20:54.05 piece of information that you're giving us 00:20:54.08\00:20:56.42 and a critical organization because if you don't know 00:20:56.45\00:21:01.29 that this exists, 00:21:01.36\00:21:02.69 you're going to keep going to those check cashing places, 00:21:02.72\00:21:05.26 you're going to keep getting turned down 00:21:05.29\00:21:07.30 by the different banks but you're saying 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.13 that if they come to you, they can learn step by step 00:21:09.20\00:21:14.54 how to get their credit score up, 00:21:14.57\00:21:16.87 how to get a loan if they need it to open a business, 00:21:16.91\00:21:20.14 I mean, this is... this is really huge... 00:21:20.24\00:21:22.54 this is really huge. Website: OperationHope.com 00:21:22.58\00:21:23.91 Operation Hope was the first Nonprofit 00:21:23.95\00:21:26.31 that was approved by regulators to be able to operate 00:21:26.35\00:21:31.02 inside of Bank Branches so, we're inside Bank Branches 00:21:31.05\00:21:35.69 so you go to a Bank Branch, you apply for a loan 00:21:35.72\00:21:39.66 and they decline you, 00:21:39.73\00:21:41.03 if we have HOPE inside of that Bank Branch, 00:21:41.06\00:21:43.80 that Banker says, "Wait, hold on, don't leave, 00:21:43.83\00:21:46.60 don't leave, go talk to that HOPE Counselor over there, 00:21:46.67\00:21:50.14 there is another route that you can go, 00:21:50.17\00:21:52.34 go talk to that HOPE Counselor over there, 00:21:52.37\00:21:54.44 and then, work with them for a while 00:21:54.48\00:21:56.44 and then come back... 00:21:56.48\00:21:57.81 you're not going to have to spend... 00:21:57.85\00:21:59.58 don't spend a dime, just spend your time 00:21:59.61\00:22:01.68 and come on back and we've had many folks that do that, 00:22:01.72\00:22:04.82 the bankers will send them to us, 00:22:04.85\00:22:06.25 we send them right back and they can get the loan 00:22:06.29\00:22:09.32 and again, our unofficial motto is: "No Loan Denied," 00:22:09.36\00:22:12.83 we don't give loans but we help individuals 00:22:12.86\00:22:15.43 put themselves in a position to be able to make sure 00:22:15.46\00:22:17.97 they can say, "I'm not denied to get that loan" 00:22:18.00\00:22:20.50 and so, again, no money exchanges hands for our people 00:22:20.54\00:22:23.67 because again... and you'll be amazed too 00:22:23.71\00:22:26.64 that... we'll stand in line for... 00:22:26.68\00:22:29.48 for Nikes... and to spend 200 to 300 dollars 00:22:29.54\00:22:33.82 but we won't spend 130 dollars for Nike stock, 00:22:33.88\00:22:38.09 well, we... it's amazing on how many times 00:22:38.12\00:22:43.06 that people essentially don't even believe 00:22:43.09\00:22:45.16 that we're offering these services for free. 00:22:45.19\00:22:47.66 Yvonne: It's like, "what's the catch, right?" 00:22:47.76\00:22:49.86 Ryan: Yes, it's all... Yvonne: What's the catch? 00:22:49.90\00:22:51.97 You can't believe, we've talked to Unions 00:22:52.00\00:22:55.07 and many times it's very hard... it's very challenging... 00:22:55.10\00:22:57.71 and it developed... you know what 00:22:57.74\00:22:59.31 because our people have gone through a lot, 00:22:59.34\00:23:01.24 they've gone through a lot, 00:23:01.28\00:23:02.61 they've been taken by a lot of people, 00:23:02.64\00:23:04.28 and you know, whether they're watching 00:23:04.31\00:23:06.15 Montel Williams trying to get the Payday loan on television 00:23:06.18\00:23:10.49 or Russell Simmons trying to pimp with the "Rush Card" 00:23:10.52\00:23:14.09 to say, "Come, spend your money to use your own money," 00:23:14.16\00:23:17.66 every time they turn around, 00:23:17.69\00:23:19.66 there is somebody out there trying to reach in their pocket 00:23:19.69\00:23:22.30 so I can definitely understand. 00:23:22.36\00:23:24.23 All I tell individuals is, 00:23:24.27\00:23:26.40 "Just try it... keep your wallet at home 00:23:26.43\00:23:28.94 just bring your IDs in case you're getting... 00:23:29.00\00:23:30.77 just make sure that people can identify who you are, 00:23:30.81\00:23:33.34 bring your ID, just come into the office, 00:23:33.38\00:23:35.71 keep your wallet, keep your credit cards at home 00:23:35.78\00:23:38.18 and just try it and come back as much as you want. 00:23:38.21\00:23:40.62 We want you to form a business 00:23:40.68\00:23:42.08 because that's where the small... 00:23:42.12\00:23:43.45 that's where the growth from our community is going to come from. 00:23:43.49\00:23:45.79 Internal gentrification is going to start occurring 00:23:45.82\00:23:49.22 when we as a people... understand 00:23:49.26\00:23:51.53 and we don't have to wait for the ship to come in any longer, 00:23:51.56\00:23:54.30 we can learn how to swim out to it, 00:23:54.30\00:23:56.10 or even learn how to make our own ship 00:23:56.16\00:23:57.93 and sail for ourselves... 00:23:57.97\00:24:00.44 Yes, we don't have to wait, we can learn now 00:24:00.47\00:24:05.71 how to get it... how do we get it... 00:24:05.74\00:24:08.51 you are offering information as to how to get it 00:24:08.54\00:24:11.48 instead of trying to... 00:24:11.51\00:24:13.08 instead of waiting for it to be given, 00:24:13.11\00:24:15.88 we can go and get it and another thing 00:24:15.92\00:24:18.62 that's interesting to me too, Ryan, is that... 00:24:18.65\00:24:21.22 I'm hearing... like... I always think about the inmates 00:24:21.26\00:24:23.76 and when they come out, the ex-felons... 00:24:23.83\00:24:26.90 they're denied work, 00:24:26.93\00:24:28.56 they want to work but they're denied work 00:24:28.60\00:24:30.97 but if they could somehow get together, 00:24:31.00\00:24:33.30 pool their resources, learn a trade, 00:24:33.34\00:24:35.60 start a business, then they're not dependent 00:24:35.64\00:24:39.41 upon companies to hire them. 00:24:39.44\00:24:41.58 Ryan: Exactly. 00:24:41.64\00:24:42.98 So what you're saying is 00:24:43.01\00:24:44.45 one of the things that your Organization 00:24:44.48\00:24:46.55 can offer... is to ex-offenders... 00:24:46.61\00:24:49.45 helping them to know how to move forward. 00:24:49.48\00:24:51.62 I'm glad you said that because we are spearheading 00:24:51.65\00:24:55.02 one of the largest movement of tangible services 00:24:55.06\00:24:58.46 for those who are incarcerated. 00:24:58.49\00:24:59.83 I'm in the prison every week 00:24:59.86\00:25:01.23 and I can't wait to go back to prison... to just ask... 00:25:01.26\00:25:03.97 because we are helping those across the Country in prison 00:25:04.07\00:25:06.84 to learn how to swim out to their own ship, 00:25:06.94\00:25:10.34 you know, I tell those individuals all the time, 00:25:10.41\00:25:13.38 it is the victim that complains about the win, 00:25:13.41\00:25:16.31 it is the victor who makes money off of making sail boats 00:25:16.34\00:25:20.22 and this is the difference in my consent 00:25:20.25\00:25:22.75 that we have... when we can take something... 00:25:22.78\00:25:26.02 and we can take nothing and turn it into something. 00:25:26.05\00:25:28.76 Just last week, we went... we did a book... 00:25:28.79\00:25:31.23 we do things like book drives, 00:25:31.26\00:25:32.59 we have a lot of volunteers and they bring books 00:25:32.63\00:25:34.73 for those who are in the world of prison 00:25:34.73\00:25:36.77 to just learn about obtaining knowledge 00:25:36.83\00:25:38.80 we teach them financial literacy, 00:25:38.83\00:25:40.34 we want them to leave with not just 100 dollars and a bus pass, 00:25:40.40\00:25:43.71 we want them to leave with a business plan and you know what, 00:25:43.77\00:25:46.64 the beautiful part about leaving with a business plan, 00:25:46.68\00:25:48.98 because we're offering now 00:25:49.01\00:25:50.35 our 12-week free entrepreneurial training program in prison 00:25:50.41\00:25:53.78 the beautiful part about it is that 00:25:53.82\00:25:56.08 you don't have to be an entrepreneur, 00:25:56.12\00:25:58.35 you might not ever be an entrepreneur, 00:25:58.39\00:26:00.59 some people decide not to pursue that route, 00:26:00.62\00:26:03.46 that might not be for you, but the skills are for everybody 00:26:03.49\00:26:06.46 just because you don't want to start your own business, 00:26:06.49\00:26:09.36 you need to learn at least a skill set 00:26:09.43\00:26:12.70 of being self-sufficient, of being responsible, 00:26:12.73\00:26:15.44 of learning how to wake up on time, 00:26:15.47\00:26:17.41 you know, early to bed... 00:26:17.44\00:26:18.77 wake up early... you get an oyster, 00:26:18.81\00:26:20.98 wake up late... you just get the shell, 00:26:21.01\00:26:23.11 we got to make ourselves move 00:26:23.14\00:26:25.38 and this is what Operation HOPE 00:26:25.41\00:26:27.62 is teaching those who are in prison, 00:26:27.65\00:26:29.32 we're starting a National Initiative, 00:26:29.35\00:26:30.99 we have a National MOU with the veterans, with the VA, 00:26:31.02\00:26:33.86 to make sure... all this lip service being provided, 00:26:33.89\00:26:36.56 one out of seven folks are homeless... our VA, 00:26:36.59\00:26:39.26 our Vets in this Country, 00:26:39.33\00:26:40.70 a lot of folks are just providing lip service, 00:26:40.73\00:26:42.23 we're going to the VA, we're going to the hospitals, 00:26:42.26\00:26:44.93 we're inside the hospital in Detroit, 00:26:44.97\00:26:47.50 we're up in the Bronx, Cleveland, 00:26:47.54\00:26:49.97 soon to be Tampa, soon to be Orlando, 00:26:50.01\00:26:51.77 we're going across the Country... 00:26:51.81\00:26:53.58 in VA hospitals all across the Country 00:26:53.64\00:26:55.24 we're providing our Vets with tangible resources 00:26:55.28\00:26:57.68 helping them learn how to buy homes, 00:26:57.71\00:26:59.45 start businesses, improve their credit 00:26:59.48\00:27:01.35 and get back into a sustainable life 00:27:01.38\00:27:03.12 to become economically viable in our Communities 00:27:03.18\00:27:06.05 because they need our help as well, 00:27:06.09\00:27:07.42 youth aging our of Foster Care is another soft spot 00:27:07.49\00:27:10.29 and we'll be getting them as well, 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.09 so we're doing a whole lot to really just make sure 00:27:12.13\00:27:14.03 that we are providing tangible services to our people. 00:27:14.10\00:27:15.93 Yes, you... ah... you are super busy 00:27:15.96\00:27:19.23 and we appreciate all that you do, 00:27:19.30\00:27:22.50 I can't believe our time is up, you have been... 00:27:22.54\00:27:26.34 this has been so insightful
