There are children across the world 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.93 that are in tremendous need, stay tuned to meet a woman 00:00:02.96\00:00:06.40 whose team is doing something about it. 00:00:06.43\00:00:08.64 My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:08.70\00:00:10.17 and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:10.21\00:00:12.17 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:36.83\00:00:39.03 My guest today is Shalini David, 00:00:39.07\00:00:41.24 President and CEO of Christalis Inc. 00:00:41.27\00:00:44.11 Welcome to Urban Report Shalini. 00:00:44.14\00:00:46.98 Thank you. 00:00:47.01\00:00:48.34 So, tell us about Christalis, what is Christalis? 00:00:48.38\00:00:52.28 Christalis is an Organization 00:00:52.31\00:00:54.62 made up of all volunteers 00:00:54.65\00:00:56.89 and it's our mission to show children who are victims 00:00:56.92\00:00:59.49 of various injustices, our love 00:00:59.52\00:01:01.22 and we do this by not only providing for their basic needs 00:01:01.26\00:01:04.49 but we want to give them emotional support, 00:01:04.53\00:01:06.43 we want to give them security, we want to give them affection, 00:01:06.46\00:01:09.33 we want to give them opportunities to succeed 00:01:09.36\00:01:12.07 a strong family 00:01:12.10\00:01:13.44 and most importantly the knowledge of Christ. 00:01:13.47\00:01:15.37 Amen, and where are you doing this? 00:01:15.40\00:01:18.04 We're in Uganda right now. 00:01:18.07\00:01:19.94 In Uganda? Yes. 00:01:19.97\00:01:21.51 And what are you providing specifically for the kids? 00:01:21.54\00:01:25.68 So we have a few projects in our Home 00:01:25.71\00:01:28.58 which is an orphanage so it's a physical building 00:01:28.62\00:01:31.69 and our children live there we have a mother-figure, 00:01:31.72\00:01:34.79 a father-figure, some aunts that help, 00:01:34.82\00:01:37.26 and there, they get everything you would give your child 00:01:37.29\00:01:40.86 in your own Home, they get education, 00:01:40.90\00:01:42.93 they get food, they get clothing, 00:01:42.96\00:01:44.77 they get healthcare, 00:01:44.80\00:01:46.33 they have morning and evening worship, 00:01:46.37\00:01:48.64 they go to school, they have chore time, 00:01:48.67\00:01:51.31 they have play time, they have study time, 00:01:51.34\00:01:53.94 they get into trouble, 00:01:53.98\00:01:55.74 so everything you would give them... we give them there 00:01:55.78\00:01:59.41 and then we treat every child individually, 00:01:59.48\00:02:01.75 sometimes we get our children at thirteen 00:02:01.78\00:02:04.05 and they've never learned their ABCs, 00:02:04.09\00:02:06.09 so we give them extra tutoring 00:02:06.12\00:02:07.62 many children come to our Home without getting any healthcare, 00:02:07.66\00:02:11.29 so, as soon as they come, we take them for a Physical, 00:02:11.36\00:02:14.13 find out if they have any issues 00:02:14.20\00:02:15.53 and get them any extra care they might need, 00:02:15.56\00:02:17.57 so that's in our Home, 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.47 and then we also provide children who are 00:02:19.50\00:02:21.97 outside of our Home-care because 00:02:22.00\00:02:23.51 in our Home we are able to give them everything 00:02:23.54\00:02:25.87 that we would give our kids but outside the Home, 00:02:25.91\00:02:28.24 they live in dire poverty sometimes, 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.48 so they're not able to stay in school, 00:02:30.51\00:02:32.38 they have to help to work for their food, 00:02:32.41\00:02:35.28 or they live with their grandparents who are very old 00:02:35.32\00:02:39.15 and they have to take care of them, 00:02:39.19\00:02:40.59 so we try to give them money to go to school, 00:02:40.62\00:02:43.09 money for bedding, money for healthcare 00:02:43.12\00:02:44.66 just for whatever their needs might be, 00:02:44.69\00:02:46.16 without taking them out of their family that they're in, 00:02:46.19\00:02:49.06 and then... on down the area we found 00:02:49.13\00:02:52.43 our children and Evon, who is our Director there, 00:02:52.47\00:02:55.00 had found that there were kids in the area 00:02:55.04\00:02:57.24 who were not eating every day, and our children too 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.24 would notice... when they come Home to eat lunch, 00:02:59.27\00:03:01.48 that their kids were not going Home for lunch 00:03:01.54\00:03:03.68 because they live so far away so Evon started a Meal Program 00:03:03.71\00:03:08.08 where we give lunch and dinner 00:03:08.12\00:03:09.45 for children who aren't able to eat every day. 00:03:09.48\00:03:12.05 How beautiful, how beautiful that you are caring 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.66 for these children who are not being cared for anywhere. 00:03:14.72\00:03:18.86 I mean, they're really not... you have the orphanage, 00:03:18.89\00:03:22.40 so they don't have parents, then you have community children 00:03:22.46\00:03:26.47 whose needs are not being met, 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.47 and so you have children who are just in dire need in Uganda 00:03:28.50\00:03:34.74 how many children are in the Home? 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.85 In the Home right now, we have about 23 00:03:36.88\00:03:40.92 and we can go up 31 but by the grace of God, 00:03:40.95\00:03:44.09 we are getting at a point where our children are growing up 00:03:44.12\00:03:47.92 and they're graduating out 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.29 so right now we have three or four of our children 00:03:49.32\00:03:52.06 who graduated out so we're at about 23 right now 00:03:52.09\00:03:54.86 and then in our Assistance Program 00:03:54.90\00:03:57.37 we are probably about 60 plus 00:03:57.40\00:03:59.20 and then in our Meal Program about 15 to 20. 00:03:59.23\00:04:02.50 Whoa! that is such a beautiful, beautiful undertaking, 00:04:02.54\00:04:07.91 and we have some pictures that we want to put up 00:04:07.94\00:04:10.81 to show what's going on there and just... 00:04:10.85\00:04:13.68 so tell us, who is in the picture 00:04:13.72\00:04:15.25 and give us a little bit of background. 00:04:15.28\00:04:17.05 Sure, sure, this picture... ah, makes me so happy 00:04:17.09\00:04:20.16 because these are two students from the 00:04:20.19\00:04:21.72 Associated Students of Walla Walla University, 00:04:21.76\00:04:23.96 so they came Home to our Orphanage, 00:04:23.99\00:04:27.16 that's our Orphanage right now 00:04:27.20\00:04:28.70 and one of our little babies who was there 00:04:28.76\00:04:30.63 for a little... short time, 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.00 but they came there last September 00:04:32.03\00:04:33.97 and this Student Group 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.24 actually made one of our dreams come true, 00:04:36.27\00:04:38.77 we've been renting a Home for the last ten years 00:04:38.81\00:04:42.24 then... one year when our lease ran out 00:04:42.28\00:04:44.11 the landlord said, they wanted to sell the Home, 00:04:44.15\00:04:46.05 so we had to find a Home to house 30 kids 00:04:46.08\00:04:49.35 in like a short amount of time 00:04:49.38\00:04:51.19 luckily... God... God is amazing all the time 00:04:51.22\00:04:54.62 Yes. He found us a Home 00:04:54.66\00:04:55.99 down the street but for a long time 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.43 we kind of knew, "Okay, we need a Home of our own 00:04:57.46\00:05:00.96 instead of renting" and so we would pray about it 00:05:01.00\00:05:03.37 and Evon is the one who lives there most of the year 00:05:03.40\00:05:05.90 so she knew that that need was really immediate 00:05:05.93\00:05:08.50 but for me... and we're all nurses, 00:05:08.54\00:05:10.21 all of us Co-founders are nurses, 00:05:10.24\00:05:12.07 for me it was just such a huge 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.88 like... undertaking I was thinking, 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.88 "How will we do this, we're nurses... " 00:05:15.91\00:05:17.81 my father has done a building project before 00:05:17.85\00:05:19.61 I knew everything that went into it, 00:05:19.65\00:05:21.35 and it just seemed impossible so I would just pray every day 00:05:21.38\00:05:24.12 I would pray, "God in heaven, 00:05:24.15\00:05:26.02 please help us get a big house 00:05:26.05\00:05:27.52 that's just perfect for all of us 00:05:27.56\00:05:29.02 where we don't have to worry about anything 00:05:29.06\00:05:31.03 raising money or capital campaign 00:05:31.06\00:05:32.79 or building or engineers or anything like that," 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.03 and that's what I would pray everyday 00:05:35.06\00:05:36.50 and um... but you know our God 00:05:36.53\00:05:39.03 He is not the God of the possible, 00:05:39.07\00:05:40.70 He's the God of the impossible, 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.34 and last year in May, 00:05:42.37\00:05:43.91 the Associated students of Walla Walla 00:05:43.94\00:05:45.97 they chose to help us build our Home, 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.01 I don't know where, 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.38 we didn't know them, they didn't know us, 00:05:49.41\00:05:51.25 somebody knew about us 00:05:51.28\00:05:52.81 and they were looking for a project 00:05:52.85\00:05:54.18 and they told them and within two weeks, 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.02 they chose us amongst six other groups and 00:05:56.05\00:05:57.95 it was just such a miracle 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.32 and they came with their own group of architectural students 00:06:00.36\00:06:04.79 and engineers and people who had built in other countries 00:06:04.83\00:06:09.20 and gave us advice about building and about our plan 00:06:09.23\00:06:13.74 and everything like that and they also... 00:06:13.80\00:06:15.80 the student group committed to raising a $100,000 00:06:15.87\00:06:18.51 towards our project, 00:06:18.54\00:06:19.97 and it was just... you know it's... 00:06:20.01\00:06:21.78 it was just that little step of faith or encouragement 00:06:21.81\00:06:26.95 that these students brought to us, it's like, 00:06:26.98\00:06:29.12 "Okay, we can do this, God can make it happen for us" 00:06:29.15\00:06:33.32 and also the fact that God knew what your needs were 00:06:33.36\00:06:37.43 and He met the need, you didn't even know... 00:06:37.46\00:06:39.26 you didn't know about them, they found out about you, 00:06:39.29\00:06:42.46 I mean, look at God, 00:06:42.50\00:06:43.83 look at how much He cares about us 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.67 and what we're doing. Yeah. 00:06:46.70\00:06:48.30 Danny Shelton has written this book called, 00:06:48.34\00:06:51.34 "The Blessing is on the GO!" 00:06:51.37\00:06:53.27 and when we step out in faith 00:06:53.31\00:06:55.14 and do... and just... we're available to do God's will 00:06:55.18\00:06:59.21 God makes Himself responsible for it 00:06:59.25\00:07:02.02 and He honors that, and He blesses your efforts 00:07:02.05\00:07:05.32 and look at what happened, these students came, 00:07:05.35\00:07:08.46 architectural students, engineering students, 00:07:08.52\00:07:12.16 I mean, that is incredible, that's incredible, 00:07:12.19\00:07:15.80 oh yeah, God took care of it, 00:07:15.83\00:07:18.53 Yeah. He took care of it, 00:07:18.57\00:07:21.17 let's look at another picture, who is that? 00:07:21.20\00:07:23.41 those are... that is the whole student group 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.51 the representatives from 00:07:25.57\00:07:26.91 the Associate Students of Walla Walla. 00:07:26.94\00:07:28.78 Oh, good, good. 00:07:28.84\00:07:30.21 This is Bilaku and he is from our Assistance Program 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.35 so he is one of our... 00:07:34.38\00:07:35.88 he's our second child with disabilities, 00:07:35.92\00:07:37.75 he has hearing and speech disabilities, 00:07:37.79\00:07:39.59 his mom abandoned him when he was an infant, 00:07:39.62\00:07:42.19 and so his grandma has been caring for him ever since 00:07:42.22\00:07:44.99 but she doesn't have the money 00:07:45.03\00:07:46.36 you can see... like where they live, 00:07:46.39\00:07:47.73 it's not great and so she did not have the money 00:07:47.76\00:07:50.77 to give him special education so she had come to us for help 00:07:50.80\00:07:54.80 and we had a sponsor who had contacted me 00:07:54.84\00:07:58.94 actually a few months before we had his request, 00:07:58.97\00:08:01.81 and she had said that she was looking to help somebody 00:08:01.84\00:08:04.95 with disabilities, and so I told her, 00:08:04.98\00:08:09.58 "At this time we don't have any projects like that" 00:08:09.62\00:08:11.55 I actually referred her to another Organization 00:08:11.59\00:08:13.46 and then Evon told us about this child 00:08:13.49\00:08:16.79 and she said, "But the money is a lot more than normal 00:08:16.83\00:08:19.69 because it's for special needs and 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.06 we don't know if we'll get a sponsor for that" 00:08:21.10\00:08:23.16 and then I immediately thought of her and I called her, 00:08:23.20\00:08:25.70 and she said that she couldn't afford it 00:08:25.73\00:08:27.34 but she'll see what she can do 00:08:27.37\00:08:28.70 and she rounded up her friends and family 00:08:28.74\00:08:30.84 and together they sponsored that child and now he goes 00:08:30.87\00:08:33.24 to a special school and he's doing really well 00:08:33.27\00:08:35.81 and he's just such a happy child. 00:08:35.84\00:08:38.21 Oh, that's so great, that's so great, praise the Lord 00:08:38.25\00:08:41.62 God is good. God is so good. 00:08:41.65\00:08:43.82 Praise the Lord, let's look at another one. 00:08:43.85\00:08:45.75 Those are our boys... 00:08:45.79\00:08:47.86 those are our boys in the Home, 00:08:47.89\00:08:49.42 I just love this picture because this makes me happy 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.13 when I see it so I turned this in, 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.76 and Peter is one of the boys in that picture, 00:08:52.79\00:08:56.83 and Peter actually lost his dad when he was young 00:08:56.87\00:09:00.90 and he was not able to go to school 00:09:00.94\00:09:04.04 the caretaker/guardian was not able to care for him 00:09:04.07\00:09:06.78 and brought him to our Home to take care of, 00:09:06.84\00:09:10.08 oh, you know, it's so... for me... 00:09:10.15\00:09:14.98 as I listen to stories about 00:09:15.02\00:09:17.35 children that have to live on the streets 00:09:17.39\00:09:20.96 or they have no one to care for them, 00:09:20.99\00:09:24.49 it's unfathomable to me that a child would have no one 00:09:24.53\00:09:29.80 around to take care of them, and what do they do 00:09:29.86\00:09:34.50 and how do they eat and how do they... 00:09:34.57\00:09:36.81 what do they do to survive? 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.44 You know, I've heard stories about 00:09:39.47\00:09:41.74 children as young as three and four, 00:09:41.78\00:09:44.05 just in the garbage heaps and 00:09:44.08\00:09:46.61 I just cannot wrap my mind around that, 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.65 it's such a painful thought 00:09:49.68\00:09:52.82 and here is Christalis 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.49 and I praise the Lord for Organizations like yours 00:09:55.52\00:09:58.16 that are reaching out to these children that are in need 00:09:58.19\00:10:01.96 and filling that need and God tells us to do that 00:10:02.00\00:10:05.43 and you are meeting that need 00:10:05.47\00:10:07.54 and that's just beautiful 00:10:07.57\00:10:09.47 to know that... and you're offering 00:10:09.50\00:10:11.37 not just the physical needs but spiritual as well 00:10:11.41\00:10:16.21 and that is... to train up these children 00:10:16.24\00:10:19.51 from a young age about Jesus, 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.88 that's tremendous. 00:10:21.92\00:10:23.25 Yeah, and it's a blessing to just see it come to fruition 00:10:23.28\00:10:27.12 like, you'll see later in a picture but we have 00:10:27.16\00:10:30.96 our son, Manasi, he came to us, he was... 00:10:30.99\00:10:33.16 he lost his parents when he was maybe three- or four-years old, 00:10:33.19\00:10:37.93 he was in Rwanda, and his parents died 00:10:38.00\00:10:41.17 so his grandma came to get him and his siblings 00:10:41.20\00:10:43.67 and brought him back but she wasn't able to care for 00:10:43.71\00:10:46.11 all of them so she put them in different Homes 00:10:46.14\00:10:48.91 and they would work for their uncle and get food 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.68 and Manasi would go to school 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.58 but he didn't have anyone to pay for his education, 00:10:53.62\00:10:55.75 so the principal took him off the roster so he could study 00:10:55.78\00:10:59.89 and the teachers would get him old books 00:10:59.95\00:11:02.22 and somehow he would get by 00:11:02.26\00:11:04.03 but he couldn't go to the next level for school 00:11:04.09\00:11:06.36 and he wasn't with his grandma and... 00:11:06.39\00:11:09.63 so when we opened up, they brought him to us 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.97 and so he was with us and now... last year in November 00:11:12.00\00:11:15.07 he graduated from Bugema Adventist University 00:11:15.10\00:11:18.94 with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education 00:11:18.97\00:11:22.81 and he's a teacher now, Ohhh... 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.01 and I share this because you were talking about 00:11:25.05\00:11:28.55 ministering to them spiritually and where he is now 00:11:28.58\00:11:32.05 he teaches in a local school 00:11:32.09\00:11:33.62 and he meets a lot of kids who don't know about Jesus 00:11:33.66\00:11:36.62 and he witnesses to them and he wrote to me one day 00:11:36.66\00:11:39.59 and he said, "You know, I used to hate it 00:11:39.63\00:11:41.70 when Mama Evon," he calls her Mama, 00:11:41.73\00:11:44.17 "used to make them study the 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.13 Scriptures on Saturday afternoon" 00:11:46.17\00:11:47.67 Now, Evon is the Headmistress at the school? 00:11:47.70\00:11:50.34 she's the Director of Uganda, of all our projects in Uganda, 00:11:50.37\00:11:53.71 she's the Executive Director there 00:11:53.74\00:11:55.08 but she lives there most of the year 00:11:55.11\00:11:56.44 she's a nurse too, so she comes and works here 00:11:56.48\00:11:58.75 three months out of the year and gets her money to go back 00:11:58.78\00:12:01.08 she doesn't want to take any other money, 00:12:01.12\00:12:03.72 she says, this is her commitment 00:12:03.75\00:12:06.19 and she is the one who cares for all the kids 00:12:06.22\00:12:08.42 and runs all the projects there. 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.23 So she's there on a voluntary basis, 00:12:10.26\00:12:12.19 she makes her money here and then goes and stays there... 00:12:12.23\00:12:15.83 yes and gives away most of her money too 00:12:15.86\00:12:18.37 she's amazing, she was here 00:12:18.40\00:12:21.87 and when we told her about the projects 00:12:21.90\00:12:23.94 we had just started, she gave up Home, 00:12:23.97\00:12:25.71 and she gave up her car, 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.08 and gave up everything and moved there 00:12:27.11\00:12:28.61 and actually she's the one who started everything 00:12:28.64\00:12:30.21 and she truly lives by faith. 00:12:30.25\00:12:33.01 Amen, that's tremendous and I'm sure she has 00:12:33.05\00:12:36.52 miracle story after miracle story 00:12:36.55\00:12:39.22 because God, again, honors... 00:12:39.25\00:12:41.89 when we do things like that, He honors those sacrifices 00:12:41.92\00:12:46.36 so I know that, so, back to Manasi, so... 00:12:46.39\00:12:49.56 Right, so he used to say he used to hate it 00:12:49.60\00:12:52.73 when she would make him study Scriptures on Saturday 00:12:52.77\00:12:54.77 but now he's so grateful for it and he's like asking for tips 00:12:54.80\00:12:58.81 on how to witness to people of different faiths 00:12:58.84\00:13:02.64 and he's just so on fire to evangelize 00:13:02.68\00:13:05.08 it's just so nice to hear that and see that, 00:13:05.11\00:13:07.45 you know back then... 00:13:07.48\00:13:08.82 when you raise the kids growing up 00:13:08.85\00:13:10.19 you don't really think, "Okay, they don't want to do stuff" 00:13:10.22\00:13:13.69 but then it makes a difference, as you grow up 00:13:13.72\00:13:16.32 and it's just amazing. 00:13:16.36\00:13:17.79 How old is he now? 00:13:17.83\00:13:19.23 He's probably about 23 or 24 right now 00:13:19.26\00:13:22.20 and for our kids, you know, like I said earlier, 00:13:22.23\00:13:25.33 we sometimes... we get them at 13 00:13:25.37\00:13:27.17 and they're just learning so they're not able 00:13:27.20\00:13:30.47 at 18 to take care of themselves 00:13:30.51\00:13:32.64 because they're not able to reach 00:13:32.67\00:13:34.71 what we would normally, here, at 18 or their early 20s reach, 00:13:34.74\00:13:37.78 so, it's our desire that we don't push them out of the Home 00:13:37.81\00:13:40.85 until they're able to be self-sufficient, 00:13:40.88\00:13:43.89 so, Manasi is our poster child, happy story 00:13:43.92\00:13:46.86 but then there are other children who have challenges, 00:13:46.89\00:13:48.79 a lot more challenges, we had our son, Shibenze, 00:13:48.82\00:13:51.33 his uncle used to do voodoo on him 00:13:51.36\00:13:53.60 so it affected him way beyond 00:13:53.63\00:13:55.80 even the times that he used to do it 00:13:55.83\00:13:58.50 it would come to him a lot, 00:13:58.53\00:14:00.30 like during school times and exams 00:14:00.34\00:14:01.94 so all our children would pray around him, 00:14:02.00\00:14:03.94 and his teachers didn't think he would make it 00:14:03.97\00:14:06.31 or if he would finish, but we made it, 00:14:06.34\00:14:08.58 we prayed him through and he got a certificate in travel 00:14:08.61\00:14:12.71 and hotel management and he became a cook in the city 00:14:12.75\00:14:16.79 and he had a certificate course and now he's trying to earn up 00:14:16.82\00:14:19.79 to get a degree in it, and for our children, 00:14:19.85\00:14:23.29 that's our... one of our mission is 00:14:23.32\00:14:24.83 we want to give them every opportunity that they can have 00:14:24.86\00:14:27.30 to have their dreams come true, 00:14:27.33\00:14:28.80 so we're trying to work and see if we can get some extra funding 00:14:28.83\00:14:32.13 to help him go for his degree and Manasi, go for his Master's. 00:14:32.17\00:14:35.47 Oh, that is... that's so awesome 00:14:35.50\00:14:38.11 these are such great stories really 00:14:38.14\00:14:40.68 because it just makes you think, "Look at God, 00:14:40.71\00:14:43.75 look at how God is working on behalf of these children" 00:14:43.78\00:14:47.65 who, if you had not intervened, 00:14:47.68\00:14:50.32 who would care for these children? 00:14:50.35\00:14:52.95 Where would they be if Christalis hadn't been there 00:14:52.99\00:14:56.29 where would they be? 00:14:56.32\00:14:57.66 God sent Christalis into that situation 00:14:57.69\00:15:01.10 to make a difference, 00:15:01.13\00:15:02.93 we have some more pictures, let's see, let's take a look. 00:15:02.96\00:15:05.70 This is one of our student missionaries 00:15:05.73\00:15:08.67 Walla Walla University also sent us three student missionaries, 00:15:08.70\00:15:11.44 and Bryson, he came and represented the ASWWU Team 00:15:11.47\00:15:16.58 for about three to six months 00:15:16.64\00:15:17.98 to help us with the building project 00:15:18.01\00:15:19.35 so not only do they come once, but they send someone to help us 00:15:19.38\00:15:22.35 throughout the whole process. 00:15:22.38\00:15:23.72 Oh nice, so they didn't just make one visit, 00:15:23.75\00:15:26.86 Yeah. they came... 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.52 they came and visited and then they kind of saw you through 00:15:28.56\00:15:31.63 the project as well? 00:15:31.66\00:15:32.99 Yes, yes. That is amazing. 00:15:33.03\00:15:35.16 Yes, so amazing. That's amazing. 00:15:35.20\00:15:37.60 I notice that we also have a video that you sent us 00:15:37.63\00:15:41.97 and I really like for our Viewers to see that 00:15:42.00\00:15:44.57 to see just what... kind of the whole picture of the school 00:15:44.61\00:15:50.38 and then you can comment on it, after the video. 00:15:50.45\00:15:54.52 Christalis, 00:15:54.55\00:15:58.32 Our desire is to give victimized children 00:15:58.35\00:15:59.69 basic needs love of family, 00:15:59.72\00:16:01.12 knowledge of Christ, 00:16:01.19\00:16:04.06 I heard about the orphan children in Uganda, 00:16:04.13\00:16:07.50 that there were a lot of children on the street 00:16:07.53\00:16:10.90 who would benefit if they were in a Home 00:16:10.93\00:16:14.27 many Homes that I went to, 00:16:14.30\00:16:16.20 very old, old, grandmothers 00:16:16.24\00:16:18.67 with their grandchildren 00:16:18.71\00:16:20.58 and their children are nowhere to be found 00:16:20.64\00:16:22.98 they have no meals, their sauce is water with salt 00:16:23.01\00:16:27.08 we could help those kids, our Home is like a family 00:16:27.12\00:16:31.19 in that, first physically, it's in one Home, 00:16:31.22\00:16:35.16 initially when we started the Home, 00:16:35.19\00:16:36.89 the kids were excited 00:16:36.93\00:16:38.29 because they were going to sleep in a bed 00:16:38.33\00:16:40.86 and a mattress, they were getting food, 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.10 that they were getting three times a day 00:16:43.13\00:16:45.27 that was too much food, is what they felt like. 00:16:45.30\00:16:47.90 Our children are orphaned due to various reasons 00:16:47.94\00:16:50.54 abandonment, rebel killings, AIDS, 00:16:50.57\00:16:53.38 Gracie was abandoned by a trash pile 00:16:53.41\00:16:56.14 when she was an infant, 00:16:56.18\00:16:57.51 we found her frail and brought to us 00:16:57.55\00:16:59.65 at six months' old but with the love of our Home 00:16:59.68\00:17:01.82 and constant medical care, she is a healthy seven-year old 00:17:01.85\00:17:04.72 and we are the only family that she knows. 00:17:04.75\00:17:06.86 At five-years old, Manasi had to walk with his bare feet 00:17:06.89\00:17:11.09 with his family from Congo to Rwanda, 00:17:11.13\00:17:13.36 his parents were victims of genocide, 00:17:13.40\00:17:15.56 and his grandmother took him and his siblings 00:17:15.60\00:17:17.63 and put them in different Homes 00:17:17.67\00:17:19.00 to work as servants for their food, 00:17:19.03\00:17:20.37 he tried to go to school, but couldn't pay the fees 00:17:20.40\00:17:22.80 so the teachers brought him to us 00:17:22.84\00:17:24.77 and we are so proud to say 00:17:24.81\00:17:27.04 that he is going to be our first college graduate next year 00:17:27.08\00:17:30.25 no child should have to suffer 00:17:30.31\00:17:32.18 because they do not have the love of a parent 00:17:32.21\00:17:34.02 because you see, James 1:27 says, "That's our job" 00:17:34.05\00:17:38.02 now, everyone may not be able to leave their lives behind 00:17:38.05\00:17:41.26 and help every child, but we can be your eyes 00:17:41.29\00:17:44.56 and we can be your hands to care them. 00:17:44.59\00:17:47.30 My reason for supporting Christalis is 00:17:47.33\00:17:49.96 when I was in 3rd grade, World Vision paid for my school 00:17:50.03\00:17:54.60 from third grade to tenth grade 00:17:54.64\00:17:56.20 and that was a big help for me and my family 00:17:56.24\00:17:59.17 they said, "Look at that kid with long shorts and big ears," 00:17:59.21\00:18:03.31 and that was me so, it's only fair that 00:18:03.35\00:18:06.61 now that I can afford it, 00:18:06.68\00:18:08.05 I can pay that back to some child 00:18:08.08\00:18:10.32 who really needs an education. 00:18:10.35\00:18:12.49 We have children of our own and it's nice to show them 00:18:12.55\00:18:15.99 how to give to others. 00:18:16.02\00:18:17.69 Through God's blessings and the love of our parents, 00:18:17.73\00:18:20.83 we didn't lack a lot of things growing up. 00:18:20.86\00:18:22.63 Christalis provides us an opportunity 00:18:22.66\00:18:24.50 to give back a little bit, 00:18:24.53\00:18:25.93 the blessings that we have been given. 00:18:25.97\00:18:27.64 I joined Christalis because... 00:18:27.67\00:18:30.17 I joined Christalis because, 00:18:30.21\00:18:32.57 so I just wanted to, in turn, 00:18:32.61\00:18:34.91 make my little impact for the world, I guess. 00:18:34.94\00:18:38.91 I see how providing them with monetary funds 00:18:38.95\00:18:42.62 so that they can receive education 00:18:42.68\00:18:45.32 or they can receive food, goes a long way. 00:18:45.35\00:18:47.92 Christalis is a 100 percent volunteer run 00:18:47.96\00:18:50.49 everything that you do directly affects these kids 00:18:50.53\00:18:54.10 and you could be a part of something 00:18:54.13\00:18:56.60 that you know will change the world. 00:18:56.63\00:18:58.90 If you feel like you want to make a difference, 00:18:58.93\00:19:02.00 you should definitely join the Christalis family. 00:19:02.04\00:19:05.11 Now, please join us 00:19:05.14\00:19:06.47 in participating in this great cause. 00:19:06.51\00:19:08.04 www. christalis. org sponsor, donate, volunteer, pray 00:19:08.08\00:19:16.45 Oh, so everything is volunteer-run? 00:19:16.48\00:19:18.75 Yes. 00:19:18.79\00:19:20.19 There are no administrative costs per se? 00:19:20.22\00:19:23.02 So, this year we started with employing somebody 00:19:23.06\00:19:27.50 just for Admin for few hours a week 00:19:27.53\00:19:29.10 because as we've grown and we're helping more children, 00:19:29.13\00:19:32.20 we had to do that but everything, like, 00:19:32.23\00:19:34.70 we have volunteers that help us on this side 00:19:34.74\00:19:36.60 with our projects on that side, 00:19:36.64\00:19:38.11 and we have staff in Uganda, and Evon is a volunteer 00:19:38.17\00:19:42.78 as you said and so but mostly it's all volunteers 00:19:42.81\00:19:47.42 people give up their time every week, 00:19:47.45\00:19:49.88 two to four hours, six hours per week, 00:19:49.95\00:19:52.39 we have five to eight solid volunteers per week 00:19:52.42\00:19:54.66 but we go up to 20 which is also a blessing 00:19:54.69\00:19:56.66 because we've been around now... ten years 00:19:56.69\00:19:58.59 and the first five years it was mostly me and my mom 00:19:58.63\00:20:01.33 and Evon and our Operating Board 00:20:01.36\00:20:03.47 but in the last five years, God has been so amazing 00:20:03.50\00:20:07.57 it was our desire to help more children 00:20:07.60\00:20:09.70 and he brought... 00:20:09.74\00:20:11.07 he helped us grow in the last five years to 20 volunteers 00:20:11.11\00:20:14.14 and it just helped us, helps us network, 00:20:14.18\00:20:17.05 helps us get more sponsors, helps us do more things 00:20:17.11\00:20:20.48 to raise more money for our children 00:20:20.52\00:20:22.15 but we really couldn't get by without them. 00:20:22.18\00:20:24.45 Oh! that's so incredible, how can one become a sponsor, 00:20:24.49\00:20:29.36 what do you have to do and how much is it 00:20:29.39\00:20:31.43 and what do you get for your money? 00:20:31.46\00:20:34.40 Sure, so can contact us via our website 00:20:34.46\00:20:37.37 or call us, e-mail us. 00:20:37.40\00:20:38.87 And what's your website? 00:20:38.90\00:20:40.77 It's just: Christalis. org 00:20:40.80\00:20:42.64 so, Christalis. org 00:20:42.67\00:20:46.57 Okay. and you can... 00:20:46.61\00:20:48.71 so it's different levels of sponsorship, 00:20:48.74\00:20:50.65 because in the Home, obviously there are more needs 00:20:50.68\00:20:53.08 because we're taking care of a lot more 00:20:53.11\00:20:54.62 for the children in our home, 00:20:54.65\00:20:56.79 so right now we have our needs 00:20:56.82\00:20:58.95 for children to be sponsored at $40 per month 00:20:58.99\00:21:02.06 or $80 per month, 00:21:02.09\00:21:03.43 it really takes about $150 per month, 00:21:03.46\00:21:05.59 but we ask Sponsors to either do $120 or $60 00:21:05.63\00:21:09.40 or $40 or $80 and together sponsor 00:21:09.43\00:21:12.30 these children, 00:21:12.33\00:21:13.90 and then in the Assistance Program, 00:21:13.94\00:21:15.90 it costs $40 for kids who are about high-school age 00:21:15.94\00:21:18.71 and $20 for kids who are elementary-school age per month 00:21:18.77\00:21:22.14 and then our Meal Program it really doesn't take a lot, 00:21:22.18\00:21:25.55 if you miss one meal a month going out, 00:21:25.58\00:21:28.02 you can feed a child for a month, 00:21:28.05\00:21:29.68 so just $12 a month for our Meal Program. 00:21:29.72\00:21:32.89 Twelve dollars a month for the Meal Program 00:21:32.92\00:21:35.99 and what does that get the person who is sponsoring? 00:21:36.02\00:21:39.43 So for the Sponsors, 00:21:39.46\00:21:41.36 when you sponsor a child specifically, 00:21:41.40\00:21:43.26 you will get a Report Card, 00:21:43.30\00:21:44.77 you will get a letter from them every year, 00:21:44.83\00:21:47.04 you'll get their picture, 00:21:47.07\00:21:48.40 and you can communicate back to them 00:21:48.44\00:21:50.14 our children love it 00:21:50.17\00:21:51.91 when they get letters from their Sponsors 00:21:51.94\00:21:53.74 when they get pictures of their Sponsor's family 00:21:53.78\00:21:56.08 it really... it makes them feel loved, 00:21:56.11\00:21:59.05 it makes them feel motivated, it's a different thing 00:21:59.08\00:22:02.08 us telling them to study hard, 00:22:02.12\00:22:03.55 and it's a different thing the Sponsor saying, 00:22:03.59\00:22:05.82 "I believe in you, I want you to... " 00:22:05.85\00:22:07.59 you just take a few minutes out of your day to write a letter 00:22:07.62\00:22:10.33 and you can change the life of a child. 00:22:10.36\00:22:13.16 So, that's beautiful, so now for the $12 00:22:13.19\00:22:15.93 what does the Sponsor... 00:22:15.96\00:22:18.83 what is the impact on the child for the $12? 00:22:18.90\00:22:21.47 So for the Meal Program, you don't necessarily 00:22:21.50\00:22:23.51 sponsor one child because it's a lot like a 00:22:23.54\00:22:25.47 Soup Kitchen, where the children come, 00:22:25.51\00:22:28.01 we have Regulars that we try to transition 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.35 into our Assistance Program but it's just... 00:22:30.38\00:22:32.55 it feeds them two meals a day for a month, 00:22:32.58\00:22:34.62 the $12 per month. 00:22:34.65\00:22:36.02 So for... anybody can do $12 a month, 00:22:36.05\00:22:42.02 I mean, that's really not much 00:22:42.06\00:22:46.03 and for that, you're giving a child 00:22:46.06\00:22:48.43 two meals a day, for a month, that's amazing! 00:22:48.46\00:22:52.90 And even in our Home, because you mentioned that 00:22:52.93\00:22:55.50 we know that everyone wants to help kids 00:22:55.54\00:22:58.84 and we realize that not everyone can afford it, 00:22:58.87\00:23:01.31 so for College Students that are in College, 00:23:01.34\00:23:03.68 or maybe are in Grad School, or you're in High School 00:23:03.75\00:23:06.08 and you want a part of this, doesn't mean you can't help, 00:23:06.11\00:23:08.45 so we have a Student Pledge 00:23:08.48\00:23:10.19 where if you're in College you can pledge $10 per month, 00:23:10.25\00:23:12.82 and if you're in High school, $5 per month, 00:23:12.85\00:23:15.16 and you can help these children just wherever you are. 00:23:15.19\00:23:19.63 I think that so often we don't realize 00:23:19.66\00:23:24.20 how impactful a few dollars can be 00:23:24.23\00:23:28.67 you know, a lot of times people will say, 00:23:28.70\00:23:31.07 "Well, I can't give $50 a month or $100 a month 00:23:31.11\00:23:36.14 I don't have it like that 00:23:36.18\00:23:37.51 so I'm just not going to give anything, 00:23:37.55\00:23:39.98 no, whatever you can give means something 00:23:40.02\00:23:42.62 Yes, yes. and I'm sure that also 00:23:42.65\00:23:45.35 somebody just wants to make a one-time donation, 00:23:45.39\00:23:47.92 you'll be open to receiving that as well. 00:23:47.96\00:23:50.76 Yes, it's the one-time donations that really get us through 00:23:50.83\00:23:52.93 because like I said, sponsorship really doesn't 00:23:52.96\00:23:55.10 cover everything we try to make it affordable 00:23:55.13\00:23:57.57 so we can have sponsors for these kids, 00:23:57.60\00:23:59.97 but it's the one-time donations 00:24:00.00\00:24:01.50 that really carries through the year. 00:24:01.54\00:24:03.34 And no amount is too small, right? 00:24:03.37\00:24:05.07 because if somebody sends you $5 or $20, or... 00:24:05.11\00:24:08.04 Or a dime, my daughter collects change 00:24:08.08\00:24:09.98 and she gives me ten cents and a penny 00:24:10.01\00:24:11.88 and I deposit that under her name 00:24:11.91\00:24:13.92 in our Accounting and it really does help, 00:24:13.95\00:24:16.55 we had a seven-year old, I think she's seven or eight 00:24:16.58\00:24:18.75 and she collected money 00:24:18.79\00:24:20.26 and she collected throughout the year 00:24:20.29\00:24:22.36 and collected a $100 or $120 and donated it 00:24:22.39\00:24:26.83 because she wanted to help these kids 00:24:26.86\00:24:29.20 so anyone can give whatever they want 00:24:29.23\00:24:31.53 and if you don't even have a penny to give, 00:24:31.60\00:24:34.10 you can give your time because like I said, 00:24:34.14\00:24:36.57 my daughter's five, she volunteers for us 00:24:36.60\00:24:39.41 and even... there are people in California, 00:24:39.47\00:24:42.24 other places, if you have an hour 00:24:42.28\00:24:43.98 or half an hour or two hours of your time, 00:24:44.01\00:24:46.21 you can do that and even if you don't have that, 00:24:46.25\00:24:48.38 we have prayer partners and we give you our prayer list 00:24:48.42\00:24:51.59 and prayer is powerful, 00:24:51.62\00:24:53.56 it's how we're doing what we're doing, 00:24:53.59\00:24:55.19 you can help us pray so nothing is impossible. 00:24:55.22\00:24:58.73 Yes, yes, so how would a volunteer 00:24:58.76\00:25:01.43 volunteer their time from here, 00:25:01.46\00:25:03.93 like what would they do to help? 00:25:03.97\00:25:06.33 From here, I know it's hard to believe 00:25:06.37\00:25:08.80 but there's so much help we need 00:25:08.84\00:25:10.27 just because we're volunteering, we don't have an office, 00:25:10.31\00:25:12.87 we don't have staff, everyone goes to work 00:25:12.91\00:25:15.18 so volunteers actually help with everything, 00:25:15.21\00:25:17.38 they help with Admin, they help with fundraising, 00:25:17.41\00:25:19.18 they help with our graphic design, 00:25:19.21\00:25:20.78 and they help with our development, 00:25:20.82\00:25:22.32 they help with everything that runs our Organization. 00:25:22.38\00:25:27.36 So you need people to say, "Look, I might not have money, 00:25:27.39\00:25:32.36 but I can give you a couple of hours a week or 00:25:32.39\00:25:35.00 an hour a week or a couple of hours a month 00:25:35.03\00:25:37.73 or... it can really make a difference for you. 00:25:37.77\00:25:40.37 It can, it's a child's difference, 00:25:40.40\00:25:43.87 sometimes one volunteer is what it takes to help another child, 00:25:43.91\00:25:47.68 and there are also opportunities to volunteer there 00:25:47.74\00:25:50.61 if you're looking for a commitment of three years 00:25:50.65\00:25:53.48 or six months or a year, 00:25:53.52\00:25:55.22 we are happy to have volunteers go there 00:25:55.28\00:25:57.15 and help us with our different projects. 00:25:57.19\00:25:59.02 That's awesome, what's your biggest need right now?
