Leprosy is an ancient disease
as we have heard in Bible times

but it still continues today.

Leprosy is a bacteria
and it goes to the body

Now thankfully 40 years ago

they came up with a medication,
a multi drug antibiotic.

So once the leper
grandmas and grandpas

are able to take the
course of that medication,

then the
leprosy bacteria becomes

inactive in their bodies.

So now we're not afraid
of getting leprosy from them

How did it get started?

Well, the Leprosy Ministry
was started by a lay person

whom we call
Grandpa Kim nine years ago

and from that
time he came alone,

but through God's providences
other missionary volunteers

have come joined the work.

Well, in China
there's about 600 colonies,

but currently because of a
lack of missionary volunteers

we're in about
10 of those places.

However there have
been over of 677 baptisms,

baptized a few days ago.

And God is just
working in a powerful way

the treatment was developed

but most of the people
living there are elderly,

so they were already abandoned

Well, a little over 2 years ago

I went to visit the
leper colonies for 10 days.

I was actually on
my way back to the US

and I had a job lined up,

waiting for me as a
teaching principal in Oregon,

in one of our Adventist schools,

but during the 10
days that I was there

God totally changed my life.

He introduced me to our
leper grandmas and grandpas

to without, many of
them without fingers,

some are blind, some
have amputated arms and legs.

I saw the great
need that they had.

And second I met the volunteers,

the missionary volunteers
and they had devoted everything,

given up jobs, given up
schooling, sold their homes,

just ready to serve our
leper grandmas and grandpas.

That really convicted me

most important thing

that convicted me
was the Bible study.

five to seven hours a day.

us the language of love

together, it's like family.

for a few days and leave.

come to know and trust,

Well, it's very simple basic

but, you know, like
someone would take care

of their elderly grandparents.

Some people need
help who are blind,

who don't have
fingers, they need help eating.

but that could mean a lot.

We also do wound care for them,

so even though we don't
have any medical background,

when we arrived we were trained

the simple wound care.

There are so many.

you a few stories,

entered the leper colonies,

especially the leper colonies

where they've never had
visitors or foreigners before,

God has totally opened hearts.

There's one story
that one of our volunteers

who went in at
the very beginning

about 8 years ago,

she went in and told
one of the leper grandpas,

grandpa, Jesus loves you

but the grandpa didn't
even know who Jesus was,

and then secondly, he
didn't even understand
00:11:20.18\00:11:22.08
what the word love meant

because they had been
abandoned by their families,

didn't understand the concept.

And so through service and love

and daily just being there
for the grandmas and grandpas

they were able to teach
them about Jesus and His love.

So it's a living example of
Christianity, you're living it,

you're teaching it
and it's very practical

and they see it through you,

Now Christianity isn't
widely accepted in China, is it?

So what happens if you get
caught spreading the Gospel?

different consequences

religious policies there,

however, in the leprosy colonies

God has done amazing things

from someone high up to go ahead

and have Bible
studies, worship together,

pray together,
have worship together.

So we truly believe that
God is working in a mighty way

because He wants everyone

to have a chance
to hear the good news.

There are a couple stories
that are really interesting.

Someone called the police

because they
heard that foreigners

were inside the leper colonies

and spreading the Gospel.

The police came,
ready to take them away,

but instead they saw the
good work that was being done

and they said, oh,
let me introduce you

to some reporters, this needs
to get out to the community.

And there's another story
where the police were coming

into take the away the
foreigner volunteers again

and the leper colony chief,
the chief of the leprosy colony

away our foreign volunteers

to come in and do the same work

said, okay, we're going.

thought twice about that

'cause they are not as
educated as you all are

on the whole situation.

What is the organization like?

guess hierarchy of it?

Well, there are
600 leper colonies

and actually it's the government

them the living spaces.

care of the colonies

better than others.

building new structures

toilets, showers, etcetera,

I first went to China

the traffic police came

and they want to interrogate

because they didn't ask us

However, we decided
to go back and help her

and there was a policeman
there who knew some English,

his English was pretty good

We all went down to the
police station together,

And so we felt like they are
the ones that don't have Jesus.

They don't have
the hope of salvation.

anyone to communicate with.

founder of our ministry,

he sent us to Japan because he
has a real heart for Japanese,

she was able to meet one
lady, one deaf blind lady.

know, let's be good friends,

about Jesus and about church.

they went to church together.
