Yes. 00:03:27.74\00:03:29.90 Tell us about yourself, 00:03:29.97\00:03:31.31 you grew up in a God-fearing home 00:03:31.34\00:03:33.34 I was an Adventist in my mother's womb. 00:03:33.38\00:03:38.38 okay, all right, all right, and so, 00:03:38.41\00:03:41.98 did you go to Adventist Schools? 00:03:42.02\00:03:45.42 Of course, I started from Kindergarten 00:03:45.45\00:03:50.43 and Primary and Sabbath School and I went from Grade one 00:03:50.49\00:03:59.50 in Seventh-day Adventist Primary Schools 00:03:59.53\00:04:02.97 to High School and to College at Fulton College in Fiji. 00:04:03.00\00:04:09.01 Wow! and so you went from Adventist Elementary Schools 00:04:09.04\00:04:14.12 to High School to College... Yes. 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.69 did you ever go to a Secular Institution? 00:04:16.72\00:04:19.85 Did you go to a State School or... 00:04:19.89\00:04:23.06 Yes... I taught for one year 00:04:23.09\00:04:26.73 because I went to train as a teacher 00:04:26.80\00:04:29.30 at Fulton College, and then after that 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.87 I decided to change career, 00:04:31.90\00:04:36.67 so I went to the University of Technology, 00:04:36.77\00:04:40.14 a State University in Papua New Guinea 00:04:40.18\00:04:43.61 and took up a degree in Accountancy 00:04:43.65\00:04:48.12 but unfortunately or fortunately 00:04:48.15\00:04:52.22 whichever way... 00:04:52.25\00:04:54.02 I look at the way I have traveled 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.69 unfortunately, because I never really practiced accounting, 00:04:56.73\00:05:03.23 because while I was still at the University, 00:05:03.30\00:05:06.84 I became involved in Student Politics 00:05:06.87\00:05:11.04 and I became General Secretary 00:05:11.07\00:05:15.44 of the National Union of Students in 1985, 00:05:15.51\00:05:19.25 in 1986, I became President of the National Union of Students 00:05:19.28\00:05:23.99 which is a National Student Organization 00:05:24.02\00:05:27.66 for the whole Country, 00:05:27.69\00:05:29.02 and then in 1987, I became a member of the 00:05:29.06\00:05:33.40 International Union of Students Executive 00:05:33.43\00:05:37.70 representing Asia and the Pacific. 00:05:37.77\00:05:39.30 So that was the beginning of your political journey 00:05:39.33\00:05:42.84 in College. Yes. 00:05:42.87\00:05:44.51 Yes, so, I've been in politics now for most of my life 00:05:44.54\00:05:48.38 without a Political degree. 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.31 Wow! wow... 00:05:50.35\00:05:52.91 I went to University to study to be an Accountant, 00:05:52.95\00:05:56.02 I did not work as an Accountant only for two years 00:05:56.05\00:05:59.05 the rest of my life has been in politics. 00:05:59.09\00:06:01.22 Isn't that amazing, 00:06:01.29\00:06:02.79 so, what did you find was the difference 00:06:02.82\00:06:06.09 between Adventist Schools and the State School, 00:06:06.13\00:06:09.36 did you find that there was a big difference 00:06:09.40\00:06:13.00 in the education, in the educational experience 00:06:13.03\00:06:16.57 between the two? 00:06:16.64\00:06:17.97 I learned a lot from the Adventist Education System 00:06:18.01\00:06:21.44 for which I give credit 00:06:21.51\00:06:22.84 because I started Boarding in an Adventist Primary School 00:06:22.88\00:06:31.95 when I was ten years old, can you believe? 00:06:31.99\00:06:35.06 You started doing what? 00:06:35.09\00:06:36.42 When I was ten years old, I went into Boarding 00:06:36.46\00:06:39.09 in an Adventist Primary School away from my village. 00:06:39.13\00:06:42.63 Boarding? 00:06:42.66\00:06:44.40 Boarding School, where we live in the School, 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.63 Oh, Boarding School, yes, yes... 00:06:46.70\00:06:50.01 so I learned a lot of things how to take care of my clothes, 00:06:50.07\00:06:57.15 At ten, you were in Boarding School? 00:06:57.21\00:07:00.78 correct... yes... Wow! 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.85 and all the way up to College, and I think, you know, 00:07:02.88\00:07:06.02 we had Work Parades at the school 00:07:06.05\00:07:09.06 where we worked, when I went to High School, 00:07:09.09\00:07:11.53 for four years, at Kambubu High School 00:07:11.59\00:07:13.73 we had a farm and so, for the four years I was there, 00:07:13.76\00:07:19.43 I worked on the farm, I worked in the poultry, 00:07:19.50\00:07:21.90 I worked as a janitor, I also worked in the gardens 00:07:21.97\00:07:31.11 cleaning up flowers and 00:07:31.15\00:07:35.05 doing beautification and things like that, 00:07:35.08\00:07:38.29 and then when I went on to College in Fulton, 00:07:38.32\00:07:41.46 I also worked on the farm, I learned how to milk cows, 00:07:41.49\00:07:46.03 I learned how to ride a horse, 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.66 and I worked in the Fruit Department, 00:07:47.66\00:07:52.27 on pineapples and oranges and so I learned a lot of things 00:07:52.33\00:07:58.44 hands on... once I was learning things economically 00:07:58.47\00:08:02.28 in the classroom. Yes. 00:08:02.31\00:08:03.68 So I credit the Seventh-day Adventist System 00:08:03.71\00:08:06.85 because I think that education system 00:08:06.88\00:08:08.75 still continues in a lot of our schools, 00:08:08.78\00:08:10.65 Yes. and it teaches holistic 00:08:10.72\00:08:13.52 approach to training to a lot of kids 00:08:13.59\00:08:18.73 much more than State Schools, 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.66 where the Government pays for everything 00:08:20.73\00:08:22.96 and they only sit in a classroom to learn 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.97 so, I... 00:08:25.00\00:08:27.14 I must credit the 00:08:27.17\00:08:29.90 Adventist Education System for, let's say, 00:08:29.94\00:08:34.68 preparing me for a lot of the things 00:08:34.71\00:08:37.18 in my leadership to this day. 00:08:37.25\00:08:38.88 Yes, while we were talking, I was thinking 00:08:38.91\00:08:42.45 about what you were saying 00:08:42.48\00:08:46.12 because one of the things that we know about education, 00:08:46.15\00:08:50.33 is it's not just about academics 00:08:50.36\00:08:52.79 it's about developing character, 00:08:52.83\00:08:55.16 it's about developing a work ethic 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.70 and so what was happening with you was 00:08:57.73\00:09:00.27 in addition to the academics, you were learning a work ethic 00:09:00.30\00:09:05.01 you were working in the garden with the cows 00:09:05.04\00:09:08.14 and, I mean, as a janitor and all of these different things 00:09:08.18\00:09:11.81 developing character. 00:10:57.65\00:10:59.79 The State University was completely different. 00:10:59.82\00:11:02.16 How so? 00:11:02.19\00:11:03.76 There's really no control, 00:11:03.83\00:11:05.16 here, I was coming from a managed, controlled, 00:11:05.19\00:11:08.00 coordinated environment from education school 00:11:08.03\00:11:11.07 and then I was just like... thrown into the deep end 00:11:11.10\00:11:14.00 where so many things were thrown at me 00:11:14.04\00:11:17.41 especially, I learned to associate with people 00:11:17.47\00:11:20.68 my roommate smoked, 00:11:20.74\00:11:23.01 he drank alcohol, 00:11:23.08\00:11:25.31 my roommate at Fulton College was just like me 00:11:25.35\00:11:28.25 we got up in the morning and had devotion 00:11:28.28\00:11:31.65 and it's a different environment. 00:11:31.69\00:11:34.56 Fulton College was an Adventist School? 00:11:34.59\00:11:36.26 Yeah, but in the State University it's different, 00:11:36.29\00:11:37.63 they put you in a room with somebody completely different. 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.80 Right... 00:11:40.86\00:11:42.16 You see, then, you've got access to everything there 00:11:42.20\00:11:47.20 so, you just now... 00:11:47.27\00:11:49.74 have to swim, 00:11:49.77\00:11:52.21 spiritually you've got to survive 00:11:52.24\00:11:55.58 in the kind of environment with so many new things 00:11:55.64\00:11:58.95 being thrown into your face, 00:11:58.98\00:12:02.05 and so, we begin to also learn about new things 00:12:02.08\00:12:09.46 and associate with professors who are telling us new ideas 00:12:09.49\00:12:13.90 you know, political, philosophical, 00:12:13.93\00:12:15.73 and all kinds of new concepts 00:12:15.76\00:12:19.37 are beginning to come into my head 00:12:19.40\00:12:22.10 and then also the power, 00:12:22.14\00:12:23.67 of standing in front of a microphone 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.54 and speaking so that students can go on strike 00:12:25.57\00:12:28.71 or they can go on a protest, 00:12:28.74\00:12:30.91 and then you see the impact of the power of your speech 00:12:30.95\00:12:35.42 influencing people, telling them to do things, 00:12:35.45\00:12:39.19 you know, face the police and then... 00:12:39.25\00:12:44.36 and so power gets a bit into your head 00:12:44.39\00:12:48.23 and then my time is now divided between 00:12:48.26\00:12:52.17 the things that I learned from my parents, 00:12:52.20\00:12:56.00 from the Adventist School, I hardly prayed anymore, 00:12:56.04\00:12:59.47 I hardly studied the Bible, I was now more into politics 00:12:59.51\00:13:06.05 I was more into discussions on... 00:13:06.08\00:13:09.35 and then I started traveling around the world 00:13:09.38\00:13:11.99 when I became involved with 00:13:12.02\00:13:14.09 the International Union of Students, 00:13:14.16\00:13:15.52 I traveled to... mostly to Eastern Europe, 00:13:15.56\00:13:18.09 the International Union of Students during the '80s 00:13:18.13\00:13:21.60 was mostly financed by the Soviet Union 00:13:21.63\00:13:26.70 and so, I mostly did my travels to Russia 00:13:26.80\00:13:31.74 and the Headquarters of the Organization was in Prague, 00:13:31.77\00:13:35.18 22nd November Street, I can't forget, 00:13:35.21\00:13:38.65 in the former Czechoslovakia which is now the Czech Republic 00:13:38.68\00:13:45.09 so I spent a lot of time there 00:13:45.12\00:13:47.02 and then I began to be introduced to the ideas 00:13:47.06\00:13:50.63 of thinkers and writers like Karl Marx and Engels and Lenin 00:13:50.69\00:13:56.23 and you know what they call the Dialectic Materialism 00:13:56.26\00:14:00.04 and they then told me that, 00:14:00.07\00:14:03.14 "You're wasting your time on this religion, 00:14:03.17\00:14:05.04 God is just an old man in the sky 00:14:05.07\00:14:08.11 how can you believe in such a God 00:14:08.14\00:14:11.08 that allows so much suffering to happen in the world 00:14:11.15\00:14:14.12 so many unemployed people, the hungry people... " 00:14:14.22\00:14:17.02 and so they took me to 00:14:17.09\00:14:19.55 some of the big places in the world. 00:14:19.59\00:14:21.26 I went to Mumbai, 00:14:21.29\00:14:23.73 I went to places like Jakarta, 00:14:23.76\00:14:27.03 I went to some of the big cities in Asia, Manila, 00:14:27.10\00:14:30.27 and to go deeper into those kinds of places 00:14:30.33\00:14:34.90 where you see human beings living below the poverty line 00:14:34.94\00:14:37.61 and then you see ten people sleeping in a little room 00:14:37.64\00:14:41.58 that in America... a baby sleeps in 00:14:41.61\00:14:45.98 Yes, yes, and... 00:14:46.01\00:14:47.85 and I began to see, 00:14:47.92\00:14:49.72 "Oh, you know, this could be the reality of life" 00:14:49.75\00:14:54.49 you know... 00:14:54.56\00:14:55.89 Isn't it interesting that during the first part of your life 00:14:55.92\00:15:00.43 right, you were settled into the missionary mindset 00:15:00.46\00:15:06.50 a Biblical mindset, 00:15:06.53\00:15:09.00 but when you went into the Secular Schools, 00:15:09.04\00:15:13.38 you lost the connection 00:15:13.41\00:15:16.08 and by losing the connection, 00:15:16.11\00:15:18.31 you were able to drift into something else 00:15:18.35\00:15:21.18 because you weren't reading your Bible, 00:15:21.22\00:15:23.99 anymore, Yes. 00:15:24.02\00:15:25.35 you weren't praying... praying anymore... 00:15:25.39\00:15:27.56 so you lost your connection to God... 00:15:27.59\00:15:30.43 But I was reading the Communist Manifesto 00:15:30.46\00:15:33.29 yes, Karl Marx, you were reading Karl Marx, 00:15:33.33\00:15:36.06 you were reading all these other Lenin and Stalin and whatever... 00:15:36.10\00:15:39.53 you were reading all of this 00:15:39.57\00:15:41.27 and not reading the Bible. 00:15:41.30\00:15:42.94 In 1987, I went to Cuba and I met Fidel Castro. 00:15:42.97\00:15:45.87 How was that? 00:15:45.91\00:15:47.91 What was that like? 00:15:47.94\00:15:49.91 Well, you know, see... I idolized Fidel in my mind 00:15:49.94\00:15:54.62 and as a student, I was wearing Fidel Castro wear 00:15:54.65\00:15:57.45 and all these things at the University, 00:15:57.49\00:16:00.09 it was a mark of respect in the Student Movement 00:16:00.12\00:16:02.72 in the '80s... if Fidel was your hero. 00:16:02.76\00:16:07.03 You shake his hand... 00:16:07.13\00:16:08.43 I didn't wash my hand for one week. 00:16:08.46\00:16:10.87 Wow! 00:16:10.90\00:16:14.24 Isn't that amazing how... when you're... again... 00:16:14.27\00:16:17.21 when you're in the world, 00:16:17.24\00:16:18.57 the people of the world become your heroes. 00:16:18.61\00:16:21.08 I met Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985 00:16:21.11\00:16:24.15 in Moscow when I attended a huge 00:16:24.25\00:16:26.55 International Student Festival 00:16:26.58\00:16:28.82 and I also met 00:16:28.85\00:16:32.52 the late Kim Il Sung of North Korea when I went there 00:16:32.55\00:16:35.59 I went to places that no people from the free world used to go, 00:16:35.62\00:16:40.20 Vienna and Kiev. 00:16:40.23\00:16:41.53 And they welcomed you there. Yes... yes... 00:21:33.82\00:21:35.69 it's the terminology for licenses. 00:21:35.72\00:21:37.19 Spectrum, it's the space that they allow 00:21:37.23\00:21:40.86 for broadcasting channels. Okay. 00:21:40.90\00:21:42.63 Only three... one is reserved for the Government, 00:21:42.66\00:21:45.83 one is private, which a private company 00:21:45.87\00:21:49.20 called MTV already... was issued, 00:21:49.24\00:21:51.71 there was only one for churches that was left and 00:21:51.74\00:21:54.38 ten... twenty different churches had been vying for it 00:21:54.41\00:21:58.71 Wow! and the former Prime Minster, 00:21:58.75\00:22:01.25 Bill Skate, had already committed it to Benny Hinn 00:22:01.28\00:22:04.99 Benny Hinn, you know, the Evangelist who visited 00:22:05.02\00:22:08.69 Papua New Guinea... Yeah... yeah... 00:22:08.72\00:22:10.06 he had committed it to him, 00:22:10.13\00:22:11.46 but... so... it was very difficult. 00:22:11.49\00:22:14.00 Only when the Government changed, 00:22:14.00\00:22:17.03 and Sir Mekere Marauta became the Prime Minister, 00:22:17.07\00:22:21.57 he appointed me as his Chief of Staff 00:22:21.60\00:22:24.17 Oh... you see... 00:22:24.21\00:22:26.54 see, now I feel like you're "Joseph" 00:22:26.57\00:22:28.61 I feel like you are a "Joseph," in the Government, 00:22:28.64\00:22:32.65 Praise the Lord.
