Stay tuned to meet a survivor 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.86 and the mother who dealt with the after math. 00:00:02.90\00:00:05.23 My name is Jason Bradley. 00:00:05.27\00:00:06.70 And you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:06.74\00:00:09.04 Hello, and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:32.43\00:00:34.30 My guests today are Don and Barbara Hales. 00:00:34.30\00:00:37.80 Don is the team leader of Tanglewood Ministries 00:00:37.83\00:00:41.27 and his mother Barbara is the coordinator 00:00:41.30\00:00:43.94 at Tanglewood Ministries. 00:00:43.97\00:00:45.51 Welcome to Urban Report, Don and Barbara. 00:00:45.54\00:00:47.61 Thank you for having us. Thank you, good to be here. 00:00:47.64\00:00:49.34 It's pleasure to have you. Just to-- 00:00:49.38\00:00:52.58 I want our viewers to know 00:00:52.61\00:00:53.95 a little bit about your background. 00:00:53.98\00:00:55.32 I want to go into it 00:00:55.35\00:00:57.99 because you have a powerful testimony. 00:00:58.02\00:00:59.65 And we want to touch on that 00:00:59.69\00:01:01.32 as well as find out about the ministry. 00:01:01.36\00:01:04.66 We want to find out about Tanglewood Ministries. 00:01:04.69\00:01:06.53 So Ms. Barbara, how back in, was it 1994? 00:01:06.56\00:01:13.17 Was that was that the year? 00:01:13.20\00:01:14.87 He had the accident? 00:01:14.90\00:01:16.24 Yes. That you had the accident? 00:01:16.27\00:01:17.61 Okay. 00:01:17.64\00:01:18.97 What transpired on that day? 00:01:19.01\00:01:20.38 How did you find out about the accident? 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.21 Okay, Don was a senior at Andrews University 00:01:23.24\00:01:26.78 with one semester left and it was this summer 00:01:26.82\00:01:29.75 and very beautiful day. 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.52 I was out cutting grass, 00:01:32.55\00:01:33.92 when my husband came to the door 00:01:33.96\00:01:35.29 and called and said that there had been 00:01:35.32\00:01:36.69 an accident at Andrews Air Park. 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.33 And we needed to go immediately. 00:01:39.36\00:01:41.63 Wow! 00:01:41.66\00:01:43.00 And so what was running through your mind? 00:01:43.03\00:01:44.93 I know, you had multiple thoughts. 00:01:44.97\00:01:46.30 Well, when he said an accident obviously it meant aircraft. 00:01:46.33\00:01:50.77 I have the unique distinction of having both a husband 00:01:50.84\00:01:54.04 who flies and three sons to fly. 00:01:54.11\00:01:57.01 So it was perhaps, in the background of my mind 00:01:57.08\00:02:00.22 that it's not unusual that perhaps one of them, 00:02:00.25\00:02:03.79 at some point would have an accident. 00:02:03.82\00:02:05.82 Yes. 00:02:05.85\00:02:07.19 And so when we heard that there had been an accident, 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.79 I put the lawn mower up, hopped in the car 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.33 and raced as fast as we could to Andrew's 00:02:12.36\00:02:14.93 about a half an hour away. 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.67 Okay, okay. 00:02:16.73\00:02:18.07 And what was going on that day, Don. 00:02:18.10\00:02:20.20 What happened? 00:02:20.24\00:02:22.24 How did that accident come about? 00:02:22.27\00:02:24.07 Well, earlier that morning, 00:02:24.11\00:02:26.31 a friend of mine who owned the aircraft 00:02:26.34\00:02:30.11 which is called an Ultra light, headed out. 00:02:30.15\00:02:33.08 And another friend was actually flying it. 00:02:33.11\00:02:36.42 And my father had been up that morning. 00:02:36.45\00:02:40.02 He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration 00:02:40.06\00:02:43.29 and he was doing surveillance that morning on the airport. 00:02:43.32\00:02:47.10 And so we were all looking at this machine 00:02:47.13\00:02:51.00 after the pilot who was flying it, 00:02:51.03\00:02:54.37 came back and landed. 00:02:54.40\00:02:55.90 And my dad just basically told me, 00:02:55.94\00:03:01.08 "Don, don't fly this thing." 00:03:01.11\00:03:03.85 You know, don't fly it. Wow! 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.68 So your dad warned you about flying it. 00:03:05.71\00:03:07.68 He had warned me. Yes. 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.05 What is an Ultra light? What is that? 00:03:09.08\00:03:11.62 An Ultra light is a kit built 00:03:11.65\00:03:14.52 or home built aircraft, recreational use. 00:03:14.56\00:03:18.63 One passenger which is a pilot and is flown on nice days. 00:03:18.66\00:03:24.37 And a open cockpit. 00:03:24.40\00:03:28.44 Some people in the past have called them flying lawn chairs. 00:03:28.47\00:03:31.47 Oh, wow! 00:03:31.51\00:03:32.84 Just like my wheel chair, 00:03:32.87\00:03:34.31 with some wings on it and an engine in the back to, 00:03:34.34\00:03:36.54 you know, to push it forward. 00:03:36.58\00:03:38.08 That's a scary. But it sounds comfortable. 00:03:38.11\00:03:40.38 Yeah. Yeah. 00:03:40.42\00:03:41.75 And I thought that that'd be fun to fly. 00:03:41.78\00:03:45.85 And so when my father told me not to fly it. 00:03:45.89\00:03:49.49 I said, "Okay, I won't." 00:03:49.52\00:03:51.53 But inside, I was like, "I'm going fly this thing." 00:03:51.56\00:03:55.06 That makes you want to fly it that much more. 00:03:55.10\00:03:56.43 Well, yeah, yeah. 00:03:56.46\00:03:57.80 And you know, I was 22 at the time 00:03:57.83\00:04:00.64 and I say now young and dumb. 00:04:00.67\00:04:04.81 But more yet, to the heart of the matter, 00:04:04.84\00:04:10.85 rebellious on the inside, you know. 00:04:10.88\00:04:13.15 You know, outwardly, you know, toeing the line. 00:04:13.18\00:04:15.52 You know, doing my part but inwardly, you know, 00:04:15.55\00:04:18.62 I'm going to do things my way. 00:04:18.65\00:04:21.16 And with that in disobedience, 00:04:21.19\00:04:23.63 of course, is a dangerous combination. 00:04:23.66\00:04:27.00 Absolutely. Get's you in trouble. 00:04:27.03\00:04:28.33 Absolutely. That's what happened that day. 00:04:28.36\00:04:30.03 How high were you when you crash 00:04:30.07\00:04:32.13 and what led to the crash? 00:04:32.17\00:04:34.90 Okay, I was told, I was about 75 feet. 00:04:34.94\00:04:37.57 And this was right after takeoff. 00:04:37.61\00:04:40.14 The Ultralight could be flown as a hang glider. 00:04:40.18\00:04:43.41 So it has, what is called a push pull bar 00:04:43.45\00:04:46.41 which is attached to the wings, so when you push the bar out, 00:04:46.45\00:04:51.39 it tips the wing back and you go up. 00:04:51.42\00:04:54.16 If you pull the bar towards you, 00:04:54.22\00:04:56.59 it pulls the wing down and you go down. 00:04:56.62\00:05:01.96 And the way that it is set up 00:05:02.00\00:05:03.97 is the cart is on a harness, I mean, on a pendulum. 00:05:04.00\00:05:08.87 So that no matter if you're going up or down, 00:05:08.90\00:05:11.54 you're still in a level position. 00:05:11.57\00:05:14.74 So when I came down, 00:05:14.78\00:05:16.31 I landed in a seated position like this. 00:05:16.34\00:05:20.32 So my spinal cord absorbed all of that energy. 00:05:20.35\00:05:24.39 And it blew out my thoracic eleventh vertebrae. 00:05:24.42\00:05:27.46 Wow! Yeah. 00:05:27.49\00:05:28.82 That's truly a blessing that you are alive. 00:05:28.86\00:05:31.66 I praise the Lord for it 'cause I should have been dead. 00:05:31.69\00:05:34.36 Yes, yes, yes. 00:05:34.36\00:05:36.83 Now Ms. Barbara, it's also my understanding 00:05:36.87\00:05:39.90 that there were some people that rallied behind you guys 00:05:39.93\00:05:44.94 during this time and provided something 00:05:44.97\00:05:47.98 that was very special and very useful to you. 00:05:48.01\00:05:51.45 Yes, yes, as time went on he went to rehab. 00:05:51.48\00:05:54.78 And then it was an issue, can he get back to life. 00:05:54.82\00:05:58.22 And a group of pilots 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.19 from the South Bend- Mishawaka area 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.46 which was the general area 00:06:02.49\00:06:03.86 in which we lived, one of the gentlemen, 00:06:03.89\00:06:07.03 in particular, came up with an idea. 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.50 He said he was trying to sleep one night. 00:06:09.53\00:06:11.40 He was thinking of Don. 00:06:11.43\00:06:12.77 He was a friend of my husband 00:06:12.80\00:06:14.70 and from his dream or idea, birthed a project. 00:06:14.74\00:06:21.31 And that project was to raise enough money 00:06:21.34\00:06:23.95 to give Don a brand new handicapped accessible van. 00:06:23.98\00:06:28.58 Wow! What a blessing? 00:06:28.62\00:06:29.95 What a blessing? 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.32 And as a result, the word went out 00:06:31.35\00:06:32.79 to the Pilot community 00:06:32.82\00:06:34.69 and over a period of about two to three months, 00:06:34.72\00:06:37.46 they raised somewhere around $ 45,000. 00:06:37.53\00:06:42.30 And then in September of that year, 00:06:42.33\00:06:44.73 they presented Don with a brand new van. 00:06:44.77\00:06:47.80 That's huge, I know you were happy about that. 00:06:47.84\00:06:49.70 I'm still amazed today. Yes, yes. 00:06:49.74\00:06:52.11 It's wow. 00:06:52.14\00:06:53.64 That is a blessing, in fact, the people 00:06:53.68\00:06:55.28 that don't know you 00:06:55.31\00:06:57.15 still rallied behind and supported you. 00:06:57.21\00:06:59.58 And really want to take part in that project. 00:06:59.61\00:07:02.58 Okay, such a powerful story and testimony. 00:07:02.62\00:07:07.82 How did Tanglewood Ministries begin? 00:07:07.86\00:07:11.16 Well, after that time, that I got the van 00:07:11.19\00:07:15.53 and I had moved to Cincinnati to start work 00:07:15.56\00:07:17.93 and I was working at an airport on the east side of town. 00:07:17.97\00:07:21.07 And worked there for about seven and a half years. 00:07:21.10\00:07:24.01 I was able to get married and buy my own home 00:07:24.04\00:07:27.64 and in all of that, so I was living. 00:07:27.68\00:07:29.74 But my health started to go down 00:07:29.78\00:07:36.82 and so around about 2005 my health really, really, 00:07:36.89\00:07:44.23 you know, started to go down. 00:07:44.26\00:07:45.83 My marriage was coming apart at that time 00:07:45.86\00:07:48.36 and I had to also resigned from work 00:07:48.40\00:07:51.27 because of health reasons. 00:07:51.30\00:07:52.73 So that was a real low period in my life, 00:07:52.77\00:07:56.44 all the way through 2007. 00:07:56.47\00:07:59.01 And in 2007, I was in despair and actually wanted to die. 00:07:59.04\00:08:07.05 But I just thank the Lord that he had other plans. 00:08:07.08\00:08:10.72 And at that time I went through a leg amputation. 00:08:10.75\00:08:13.79 And also my father was killed 00:08:13.82\00:08:17.09 in a car pedestrian accident in front of our home. 00:08:17.16\00:08:20.93 And so it was in, let's see, in 2008 00:08:20.96\00:08:24.00 that I was in a hospital for a second leg amputation. 00:08:24.07\00:08:29.27 And I'll let mom take over the story here 00:08:29.30\00:08:31.31 because she did a visitation that day. 00:08:31.34\00:08:34.88 Don was just about ready to get out the hospital 00:08:34.91\00:08:37.35 with the second leg amputation. 00:08:37.38\00:08:39.55 And the elderly friend of ours went into 00:08:39.58\00:08:43.69 and assisted living private pay facility. 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.96 And I decided to go visit her, to see how she was doing. 00:08:46.99\00:08:50.63 And as I was leaving she had said, 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.03 you know, I like the facility. 00:08:53.06\00:08:54.83 It's is a beautiful place. 00:08:54.86\00:08:57.03 People are very nice but the one thing 00:08:57.07\00:08:58.83 I don't like is, I don't get to go to church anymore. 00:08:58.87\00:09:03.00 And so, you know, I can't get out or anything. 00:09:03.04\00:09:07.21 And I heard myself saying to her, "Well! 00:09:07.24\00:09:09.68 You know that's something I could do. 00:09:09.71\00:09:11.25 I would be happy to start a church service here. 00:09:11.28\00:09:14.45 I've been involved in ShareHim 00:09:14.48\00:09:16.28 and preached in three or four countries. 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.15 You know, I can do that. 00:09:19.19\00:09:20.72 And so I spoke with the activities' leader 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.59 and she said, "You'd come every week 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.06 and do a church service?" 00:09:26.09\00:09:27.40 And I said, "Sure, I'd be happy to." 00:09:27.46\00:09:30.57 And when can we do it and after much talking, 00:09:30.60\00:09:34.60 it became apparent that the best time for them 00:09:34.64\00:09:37.61 was Sunday evening, 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.27 when I normally would be watching 60 Minutes. 00:09:39.31\00:09:41.88 Wow! 00:09:41.91\00:09:43.24 Way just like, you know, my day is gone. 00:09:43.28\00:09:45.85 So I said, "Yeah I'll do it. 00:09:45.88\00:09:47.68 So we started after supper on Sunday evening. 00:09:47.72\00:09:50.99 And so we've been doing a weekly service 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.56 ever since during that hour. 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.82 Wow! okay. 00:09:55.86\00:09:57.89 Now, number one, you're a very strong woman. 00:09:57.93\00:10:02.86 How did you feel, I mean, to have your son 00:10:02.90\00:10:07.24 going through this at the time, losing your husband? 00:10:07.30\00:10:10.17 How did you? 00:10:10.21\00:10:11.84 How did you make it through that tough time? 00:10:11.87\00:10:13.88 And what helped? It's only the Lord obviously. 00:10:13.94\00:10:16.81 I mean, you're going through so many emotions, 00:10:16.85\00:10:20.18 basically you're trying to figure out 00:10:20.22\00:10:22.12 what your finances are going be? 00:10:22.15\00:10:23.49 Because now your income is going to be cut. 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.45 Because your primary source of income is no longer there. 00:10:25.49\00:10:30.39 And then, of course, he was living with us 00:10:30.43\00:10:32.19 about that time which meant 00:10:32.23\00:10:33.56 that basically I was the caregiver. 00:10:33.60\00:10:36.80 And you know, it's like, you know, 00:10:36.83\00:10:38.67 "Lord, there's so much going on 00:10:38.70\00:10:41.40 and I need something different." 00:10:41.44\00:10:43.07 And I saw getting out and getting back 00:10:43.10\00:10:46.11 involved in ministry is something he did. 00:10:46.14\00:10:47.84 I could do. That would be good for me. 00:10:47.88\00:10:49.68 Okay. Okay. 00:10:49.71\00:10:52.05 And, Don, how are you feeling at the time 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.25 of with this ministry beginning? 00:10:54.28\00:10:57.12 And how did you feel about taking part in that? 00:10:57.15\00:11:01.22 Well, I was happy to help. 00:11:01.26\00:11:03.22 But my attitude was that this was her ministry. 00:11:03.26\00:11:08.00 I never had any aspirations of, 00:11:08.03\00:11:12.47 you know, working with elderly seniors. 00:11:12.50\00:11:15.44 You know, I had thought that, 00:11:15.47\00:11:16.81 you know, I wouldn't mind working with, 00:11:16.87\00:11:18.64 you know, grown adults but I never saw 00:11:18.67\00:11:22.34 my calling into senior ministry. 00:11:22.38\00:11:26.21 But I thank the Lord for it. 00:11:26.25\00:11:27.68 It's one of the best things that's ever happened to me. 00:11:27.72\00:11:30.75 Yes, that's a blessing as well. 00:11:30.79\00:11:33.72 What challenges? 00:11:33.76\00:11:35.09 What are some of the challenges that. 00:11:35.12\00:11:37.09 TWM has faced spiritually or otherwise? 00:11:37.13\00:11:41.70 Well, for us, when we came into ministry, 00:11:41.73\00:11:46.10 we came with the idea that, you know, we've got a, 00:11:46.13\00:11:49.67 you know, we'll preached the doctrinal truth 00:11:49.70\00:11:51.77 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.14 We really wanted to emphasize that. 00:11:53.17\00:11:56.01 We're also doing, you know, all of the formalities 00:11:56.04\00:12:02.12 of a church service. 00:12:02.15\00:12:03.49 You know, we only have one hour. 00:12:03.52\00:12:05.52 So you know, after doing all those formalities, 00:12:05.55\00:12:07.96 we end up with about 10 minutes left for the word. 00:12:07.99\00:12:11.66 And the Lord intervened in our lives personally 00:12:11.69\00:12:17.73 and you know, brought it to my attention 00:12:17.77\00:12:21.24 that we really needed to focus on... 00:12:21.27\00:12:25.04 Lifting up Jesus. Lifting up Jesus. 00:12:25.07\00:12:28.21 And when we lift up Jesus, he would do the drawing. 00:12:28.24\00:12:31.98 And all of that doctrines will fall in to place. 00:12:32.01\00:12:33.48 All of the doctrinal truths will fall, 00:12:33.52\00:12:35.68 you know, right into place as we walk through the Bible, 00:12:35.72\00:12:38.99 you know, which we're doing now. 00:12:39.02\00:12:41.12 Also, we have trimmed down our service. 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.83 Because we only have a half hour. 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.66 An hour. 00:12:45.69\00:12:47.03 Oh! We've an hour. 00:12:47.10\00:12:48.40 But actually in our memory care services, 00:12:48.43\00:12:53.77 we only have a half hour. 00:12:53.80\00:12:55.14 So we don't have a lot of time for all of the extras. 00:12:55.17\00:12:58.57 So we focus on singing the hymns. 00:12:58.61\00:13:02.81 You know, the elderly love the hymns. 00:13:02.84\00:13:05.68 Also, prayer, that's very important 00:13:05.71\00:13:07.85 in getting into the word. 00:13:07.88\00:13:09.58 Those are the three basics and then we add, 00:13:09.62\00:13:11.82 you know, special music, the appeal song. 00:13:11.85\00:13:15.89 But really tried to focus those emphasis 00:13:15.92\00:13:18.43 on the singing, praying. 00:13:18.46\00:13:20.93 And the word. And the Bible. 00:13:20.96\00:13:23.06 And that's what our program is based around, 00:13:23.10\00:13:25.67 you know, week after week. 00:13:25.70\00:13:27.04 That's great. 00:13:27.10\00:13:28.44 And I like, what you said about 00:13:28.47\00:13:29.80 the doctrinal truth being in and just focusing on the word. 00:13:29.84\00:13:34.28 And I mean... The truth come forward. 00:13:34.31\00:13:35.64 And the truth is in there. Right. 00:13:35.68\00:13:37.41 You just have to find it. 00:13:37.45\00:13:38.78 Yeah, 'cause we actually got pushback from, 00:13:38.81\00:13:40.95 you know, from the folks who were coming. 00:13:40.98\00:13:45.42 You know we started to get pushbacks 00:13:45.45\00:13:46.82 on some of those things because they're coming from, 00:13:46.86\00:13:48.52 you know, different faiths backgrounds. 00:13:48.56\00:13:51.39 And we found that it's not they that need to change. 00:13:51.43\00:13:54.93 We needed to change. 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.26 And when that focus changed for us personally 00:13:56.30\00:14:00.04 and then corporately as a ministry, 00:14:00.07\00:14:03.04 the ministry just started to grow. 00:14:03.07\00:14:06.78 And we saw the Lord just doing wonderful things. 00:14:06.81\00:14:10.88 And still is today. 00:14:10.95\00:14:12.41 The other thing that also happened was that 00:14:12.45\00:14:15.48 before when we first started, 00:14:15.52\00:14:17.79 you know, we got this service on Sunday night. 00:14:17.82\00:14:20.29 And you know, okay, we've got the service. 00:14:20.36\00:14:23.93 But now we're spending... 00:14:23.96\00:14:27.30 When we end our service on Sunday, 00:14:27.30\00:14:28.80 we begin to get ready for next week service. 00:14:28.83\00:14:31.93 And what that said to each of us 00:14:31.97\00:14:34.34 we needed to make sure 00:14:34.37\00:14:35.70 that we were spending time in prayer 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.21 and personal Bible study. 00:14:37.27\00:14:39.41 And then literally I do a lot of the special music 00:14:39.44\00:14:42.68 but the question is I can't just sing any song. 00:14:42.71\00:14:47.08 What's a sermon going to be about? 00:14:47.12\00:14:49.08 And my song needs to be an appeal-song 00:14:49.12\00:14:52.72 that would capsulate 00:14:52.75\00:14:54.56 what the speaker was talking about. 00:14:54.59\00:14:56.89 And that can be a challenge. I believe. 00:14:56.93\00:14:59.96 Because you can't just come up with a song 00:15:00.06\00:15:01.93 and put it with the sermon. 00:15:01.96\00:15:04.07 And you have to ask God, 00:15:04.10\00:15:05.43 "What song should I sing at the end of that sermon 00:15:05.47\00:15:09.64 that will say what you wanted to say 00:15:09.67\00:15:11.97 that to appeal to those folks' heart?" 00:15:12.01\00:15:14.68 And God comes through, when I come through. 00:15:14.71\00:15:18.78 When I do what I need to do, He gives you the right song, 00:15:18.81\00:15:23.15 that's just the song that needed to have been 00:15:23.18\00:15:25.62 sung after that sermon. 00:15:25.65\00:15:27.16 And it's been awesome to see the response of the people. 00:15:27.19\00:15:31.69 That's beautiful. 00:15:31.73\00:15:33.23 It's so amazing what you guys are doing 00:15:33.26\00:15:35.33 because I mean, when you go to some of these facilities 00:15:35.36\00:15:38.03 and you realize there's some loved ones 00:15:38.07\00:15:40.10 that are in there, that have no visitors. 00:15:40.14\00:15:42.50 They have nobody that comes to visit them. 00:15:42.54\00:15:44.71 So you guys are sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:15:44.74\00:15:47.54 And you're also providing them with visitors. 00:15:47.58\00:15:50.61 And showing them that people still love them 00:15:50.65\00:15:53.18 and they're not forgotten. 00:15:53.21\00:15:54.55 And I think that is excellent. 00:15:54.58\00:15:56.65 What are some of the miracles 00:15:56.69\00:15:58.02 that you guys have witnessed in some of these facilities? 00:15:58.05\00:16:02.42 Probably the lady who initially asked 00:16:02.46\00:16:06.43 that we consider coming, had moved from her home 00:16:06.46\00:16:09.60 after being in it 40, 50 years, into a facility 00:16:09.63\00:16:13.44 and came kicking and screaming. 00:16:13.47\00:16:16.34 Her children said you're going. 00:16:16.37\00:16:20.71 Only to discover that a couple years later 00:16:20.78\00:16:23.21 because of health or finances, she had to move again 00:16:23.24\00:16:27.25 and to hear her say, you know, 00:16:27.32\00:16:29.35 I came here not wanting to come. 00:16:29.38\00:16:32.09 But because of your weekly service, 00:16:32.12\00:16:34.16 I now have a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:16:34.19\00:16:37.66 And wherever I go it will be okay 00:16:37.69\00:16:40.83 because I know I am taking Jesus with me. 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.63 That is just amazing. 00:16:43.67\00:16:47.14 It touches your heart. Yes. 00:16:47.20\00:16:48.54 It does. Yes. 00:16:48.57\00:16:49.90 It does. Yes. 00:16:49.94\00:16:51.27 What training do you'll have 00:16:51.31\00:16:53.44 that prepared you for this work? 00:16:53.48\00:16:57.68 The Lord. 00:16:57.71\00:16:59.25 Being willing is... And open... 00:16:59.28\00:17:01.55 Is the primary prerequisite. 00:17:01.58\00:17:04.85 You know, the background that we have, 00:17:04.89\00:17:08.79 that we have brought, you know, as you know, being, 00:17:08.82\00:17:11.83 you know, members of the church, 00:17:11.86\00:17:13.19 you know, having been a part 00:17:13.23\00:17:14.56 of Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:17:14.56\00:17:15.90 obviously is helpful. 00:17:15.93\00:17:17.27 But really a willing heart 00:17:17.30\00:17:18.63 and a willingness to get on your knees 00:17:18.67\00:17:20.44 and pray Lord, "teach me, show me." 00:17:20.47\00:17:23.30 And because we look back at, you know. 00:17:23.34\00:17:26.14 Early services... 00:17:26.17\00:17:27.58 When we first started, it's like, "Wow! 00:17:27.61\00:17:30.58 We did that." 00:17:30.65\00:17:31.98 But the Lord has taken our stumbles and He's blessed. 00:17:32.01\00:17:37.85 And we're still growing and learning. 00:17:37.89\00:17:40.26 But being willing to be used and to wear multiple hats 00:17:40.29\00:17:43.93 because you know we have a team of ten. 00:17:43.96\00:17:47.10 But you know, from week after week, 00:17:47.13\00:17:49.10 you know, we have to adjust. 00:17:49.13\00:17:50.47 You know, sometimes we're speaking, 00:17:50.53\00:17:51.87 sometimes we're not. 00:17:51.90\00:17:53.23 We do have two main speakers 00:17:53.27\00:17:54.64 but you know sometimes they're not always there. 00:17:54.67\00:17:56.57 So somebody else has to step up 00:17:56.60\00:17:58.81 and speak or sing or what have you. 00:17:58.84\00:18:02.04 But being willing, being willing, has been the, 00:18:02.08\00:18:07.25 you know, the best thing for us. 00:18:07.28\00:18:09.62 And you know, God has led and he has provided. 00:18:09.65\00:18:12.95 Very excited. Amen. 00:18:12.99\00:18:14.32 And being able to realize 00:18:14.36\00:18:16.66 that visitation is a part of this. 00:18:16.69\00:18:18.79 You know, we originally committed 00:18:18.83\00:18:20.33 for an hour on Sunday evening. 00:18:20.36\00:18:22.33 But we're now taking a day of week for visitation. 00:18:22.36\00:18:25.73 We have people who end up in hospitals 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.64 or in other facilities. 00:18:27.67\00:18:30.31 Last year we had twenty people that died. 00:18:30.34\00:18:34.21 Already this year we've probably lost eight or ten. 00:18:34.28\00:18:37.88 So we're attending funerals. 00:18:37.91\00:18:40.02 Or at least the wakes 00:18:40.05\00:18:42.55 and that even open another ministry 00:18:42.58\00:18:44.55 because now when someone dies, 00:18:44.59\00:18:47.76 we make up a packet that includes a good book 00:18:47.79\00:18:52.46 which we're using A Great Hope, 00:18:52.49\00:18:54.83 right now which is the last three chapters-- 00:18:54.86\00:18:56.97 Last nine chapters are Great Controversy, 00:18:57.03\00:18:59.43 with the corresponding postcard that Nathan Green did. 00:18:59.47\00:19:02.87 And we put those in an envelope, 00:19:02.90\00:19:04.27 put a message on it. 00:19:04.34\00:19:06.01 And we make up one up 00:19:06.04\00:19:07.41 for every immediate family members. 00:19:07.44\00:19:09.91 So if a wife died, the husband and any children get it. 00:19:09.94\00:19:13.95 If the mom dies then we give it to the children and. 00:19:13.98\00:19:16.92 Just last week, we gave away nine. 00:19:16.95\00:19:20.62 And of course, that, they cost. We have no budget. 00:19:20.69\00:19:25.36 But what happens is that someone would press 00:19:25.39\00:19:27.73 some money in our hands 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.40 which enables us to continue to make up those packets 00:19:29.43\00:19:33.00 and we figure that the packet costs about 350 each. 00:19:33.03\00:19:37.31 And a decent nice card from Hallmark 00:19:37.34\00:19:40.41 would probably cost three fifty 00:19:40.48\00:19:41.98 and which they're going to pitch. 00:19:42.01\00:19:43.78 But they're holding on 00:19:43.85\00:19:45.18 to those Great Controversy books 00:19:45.21\00:19:46.85 into the picture of the Second Coming. 00:19:46.92\00:19:51.22 Wow! So it's been a need. 00:19:51.25\00:19:53.19 So we're interacting with family members 00:19:53.22\00:19:56.09 that we had no idea we'd ever get a chance to. 00:19:56.12\00:19:59.89 Wow! Impacting so many lives. 00:19:59.93\00:20:02.33 We have some pictures of you guys in action 00:20:02.36\00:20:05.50 that I'd like for our viewers to see. 00:20:05.53\00:20:07.30 So as we put those on the screen 00:20:07.34\00:20:09.20 why don't you describe that for me, Don. 00:20:09.24\00:20:11.81 This is Pauline Finn. 00:20:11.84\00:20:13.21 And she was the inspiration to start Tanglewood Ministries. 00:20:13.24\00:20:17.01 Wow! Very important lady. 00:20:17.05\00:20:20.18 And again this is us during, 00:20:20.22\00:20:22.38 I think, that was a Christmas service 00:20:22.42\00:20:24.82 that we were doing. 00:20:24.85\00:20:27.96 And this is one of our team members, 00:20:27.99\00:20:29.59 Bob Cassini and he was speaking to Mrs. Finn. 00:20:29.62\00:20:32.86 And I believe they were talking about 00:20:32.89\00:20:35.26 a Bible topic on that particular shot. 00:20:35.30\00:20:37.77 Oh, wow! Yes. 00:20:37.80\00:20:39.20 And this is Eva. 00:20:39.23\00:20:40.57 She is our lady who does the health nugget. 00:20:40.60\00:20:44.24 And she's demonstrating some of the exercises 00:20:44.27\00:20:48.08 that she wants some of the people to do. 00:20:48.11\00:20:51.11 And this is a view of the room 00:20:51.15\00:20:53.15 in which we do the worship service. 00:20:53.18\00:20:56.28 And this is Charles. 00:20:56.32\00:20:57.65 He's our main speaker and doing a sermon 00:20:57.69\00:21:00.76 on the sacrificial offering the lamb 00:21:00.79\00:21:04.26 that was brought to the tabernacle. 00:21:04.33\00:21:07.40 And this is McGill. 00:21:07.50\00:21:08.90 And he's also one of our speakers. 00:21:08.93\00:21:12.23 And he's got a model there of the sanctuary 00:21:12.27\00:21:17.01 that God instructed Moses to build. 00:21:17.07\00:21:20.58 And so we did a whole series on the sanctuary. 00:21:20.64\00:21:24.21 And this is from Faith, she's one of our musicians. 00:21:24.25\00:21:28.95 Of course, mom here doing one of the sermons. 00:21:28.98\00:21:33.82 That's for music. 00:21:33.86\00:21:35.22 Oh, I didn't know that you can play guitar. 00:21:35.26\00:21:36.59 Just a little bit, just a little bit. 00:21:36.62\00:21:38.16 But I do play. Yes. 00:21:38.19\00:21:40.20 And this is our end of the year program 00:21:40.26\00:21:42.23 we call it the Agape feast. 00:21:42.26\00:21:44.53 And it's just a really nice service 00:21:44.57\00:21:47.50 that we do each year. 00:21:47.57\00:21:49.54 The tables are lined up in the form of a cross 00:21:49.57\00:21:52.14 and we have the lights dimmed. 00:21:52.17\00:21:53.61 And there're some candles up there. 00:21:53.64\00:21:55.74 And nice, some food, 00:21:55.78\00:21:58.78 you know, some finger foods and things like that. 00:21:58.81\00:22:01.05 It's just a really nice service to end out each year. 00:22:01.08\00:22:04.22 And then this is our team. 00:22:04.29\00:22:06.22 We've got Clinton, and in front, Faith, 00:22:06.25\00:22:09.02 and McGill and his wife Titta. 00:22:09.06\00:22:10.83 And Bob and Eva Kasznia, and Rebecca and Charles Pates. 00:22:10.86\00:22:16.20 Yeah. So that's our team. 00:22:16.23\00:22:17.57 Wow! Yeah. 00:22:17.60\00:22:18.93 Wow! Wow! Yeah. 00:22:18.97\00:22:21.24 Well. 00:22:21.27\00:22:22.60 How can someone who wants to become involved 00:22:22.64\00:22:24.91 with senior ministry, how can they get involved? 00:22:24.94\00:22:27.58 What do they need to do? 00:22:27.61\00:22:29.04 Well, the easiest way would be to hopefully know 00:22:29.08\00:22:33.11 someone in the facility that helps. 00:22:33.15\00:22:36.02 But then speak with the activities leader 00:22:36.05\00:22:39.62 and arrange a time that's convenient for everyone. 00:22:39.65\00:22:43.53 Ideally, maybe you think it needs to be on Sabbath. 00:22:43.59\00:22:46.56 But Sabbath might not be a day 00:22:46.59\00:22:48.43 you want to commit to doing something. 00:22:48.46\00:22:51.60 But work with the activity folk. 00:22:51.63\00:22:54.07 And we're doing two Thursday services 00:22:54.10\00:22:57.57 and one Sunday night, well, at this point. 00:22:57.61\00:23:00.21 And how did you select those days in particular? 00:23:00.28\00:23:02.51 I know you still watch 60 Minutes on Sunday night? 00:23:02.54\00:23:06.11 Sunday night was because it worked 00:23:06.15\00:23:08.52 in with their schedule 00:23:08.55\00:23:09.88 and it worked in with our schedule. 00:23:09.92\00:23:11.42 And then Thursdays, we have also expanded 00:23:11.45\00:23:15.49 to a mailing list. 00:23:15.52\00:23:17.16 And we do about a little over two hundred sermons that 00:23:17.23\00:23:20.90 of which about 35 of them we hand deliver. 00:23:20.93\00:23:25.50 And the rest we mail. 00:23:25.53\00:23:27.50 And two of the individuals had left Tanglewood 00:23:27.54\00:23:31.17 and went someplace else and we were just dropping off 00:23:31.21\00:23:33.88 hand their sermon outlines each week. 00:23:33.94\00:23:37.01 But the activity leader had been a Tanglewood, 00:23:37.05\00:23:39.35 and this is not and that a new facility. 00:23:39.38\00:23:42.15 And she asked, "Would you consider 00:23:42.18\00:23:43.89 doing a service here?" 00:23:43.95\00:23:45.65 And since we were going there every weekend anyway, 00:23:45.69\00:23:47.89 we decided, "Yes we could stay half an hour." 00:23:47.92\00:23:50.89 And this is memory care, so their memories are short. 00:23:50.93\00:23:54.00 Yes. 00:23:54.03\00:23:55.36 But they love the sing the hymns. 00:23:55.40\00:23:56.90 And so basically we do abbreviated service. 00:23:56.93\00:23:59.40 We sing most of the time. 00:23:59.43\00:24:01.90 I do about a five minute talk that includes scripture. 00:24:01.94\00:24:07.61 And so we read, try to read familiar passages 00:24:07.64\00:24:10.88 that some of them still know, like the Twenty third Psalms. 00:24:10.95\00:24:13.82 Or John 14:1-3. 00:24:13.85\00:24:17.42 And others that are fairly familiar. 00:24:17.49\00:24:20.16 And they literally wake up, 00:24:20.19\00:24:22.09 sometimes they're totally out there 00:24:22.12\00:24:23.83 but when we get there, starting singing the hymns. 00:24:23.86\00:24:26.80 They wake up. 00:24:26.83\00:24:28.13 They sing with this us in harmony 00:24:28.16\00:24:30.53 and in tune for half an hour. 00:24:30.57\00:24:33.30 Yes, it is. 00:24:33.34\00:24:34.67 And to see that happen week after week, 00:24:34.70\00:24:37.27 is just amazing. 00:24:37.31\00:24:38.97 Well, we want to tell people 00:24:39.01\00:24:40.74 how to get in touch with you and how to reach you. 00:24:40.78\00:24:43.81 You can contact. 00:24:43.85\00:24:45.21 Tanglewood Ministries by sending them a mail 00:24:45.25\00:24:48.02 at South Bend First Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 00:24:48.05\00:24:51.79 1936 East Altgeld street, South Bend, Indiana 46614. 00:24:51.82\00:24:59.59 Or via phone at (574)654-7320. 00:24:59.63\00:25:05.70 And they also have a website, sbadventist.org. 00:25:05.73\00:25:12.44 Well, it is such a wonderful ministry that you all have. 00:25:12.47\00:25:19.31 Okay. 00:25:19.35\00:25:20.72 I want to know how it co-relates 00:25:20.75\00:25:22.25 with the Adventist Church, like with the mission 00:25:22.28\00:25:24.55 of South Bend Adventist Church. 00:25:24.59\00:25:27.26 How does it, how does it work with that? 00:25:27.29\00:25:31.03 Well we're a supporting ministry 00:25:31.06\00:25:32.76 but we work closely with the church. 00:25:32.79\00:25:35.33 And they have been very supportive 00:25:35.36\00:25:37.23 of what we're doing and even provided Bibles for us 00:25:37.27\00:25:40.94 because we needed super large print, giant print Bibles 00:25:40.97\00:25:44.57 and we were able to get those, and... 00:25:44.61\00:25:46.64 But they've been very helpful, supportive and encouraging. 00:25:46.68\00:25:51.15 And that's been... 00:25:51.18\00:25:52.65 you know, just a great relationship. 00:25:52.68\00:25:54.28 Yeah. 00:25:54.32\00:25:55.65 And I was just gonna add 00:25:55.68\00:25:57.05 that all of the team members are members 00:25:57.09\00:25:59.29 of our First church as well. 00:25:59.32\00:26:01.42 Oh! wow, so you'll the church who is involved in. 00:26:01.46\00:26:05.23 What is it like with the short time 00:26:05.26\00:26:07.23 that we have left, 00:26:07.23\00:26:08.56 what is it like having your son in ministry? 00:26:08.60\00:26:12.40 My mother and I work together. My mom's Yvonne Lewis. 00:26:12.43\00:26:16.17 Yes. And so we're both in ministry. 00:26:16.20\00:26:18.64 And ...but what is it like 00:26:18.67\00:26:20.68 from a mother's perspective working hand in hand 00:26:20.71\00:26:23.95 with your son serving the Lord? 00:26:23.98\00:26:25.95 It's been exciting. He's a good compliment for me. 00:26:25.98\00:26:31.52 We generally get along quite well. 00:26:31.55\00:26:35.12 And we've discovered that we harmonize quite nicely 00:26:35.16\00:26:38.43 in singing as well in music aspect. 00:26:38.46\00:26:41.86 And often times think somewhat alike so. 00:26:41.90\00:26:45.23 He's been a wonderful asset and the technical things, 00:26:45.27\00:26:48.74 particularly, sound systems and that, kind of thing, 00:26:48.77\00:26:51.97 I don't have to worry about the computer and all that. 00:26:52.01\00:26:55.38 And what's it like working with your mom? 00:26:55.41\00:26:58.01 It's been a good partnership. 00:26:58.05\00:27:01.35 To follow her lead but yet also make suggestions, 00:27:01.38\00:27:07.32 maybe we should do things this way. 00:27:07.39\00:27:09.12 But the Lord has blessed and you know, 00:27:09.16\00:27:11.66 He's the focus and He's the attention. 00:27:11.69\00:27:13.83 And when you co-laboring with Christ 00:27:13.86\00:27:17.47 and with family it's just, has been real exciting. 00:27:17.50\00:27:21.20 Yeah.
