Stay tuned to meet a survivor 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.93 and the mother who dealt with the after math. 00:00:02.96\00:00:05.30 My name is Jason Bradley. 00:00:05.33\00:00:06.74 And you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:06.77\00:00:09.10 Hello, and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:32.49\00:00:34.36 My guests today are Don and Barbara Hales. 00:00:34.40\00:00:37.90 Don is the team leader of Tanglewood Ministries 00:00:37.93\00:00:41.37 and his mother Barbara is the coordinator 00:00:41.40\00:00:44.04 at Tanglewood Ministries. 00:00:44.07\00:00:45.61 Welcome to Urban Report, Don and Barbara. 00:00:45.64\00:00:47.71 Thank you for having us. Thank you, good to be here. 00:00:47.74\00:00:49.44 It's pleasure to have you. Just to-- 00:00:49.48\00:00:52.68 I want our viewers to know 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.05 a little bit about your background. 00:00:54.08\00:00:55.42 I want to go into it 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.09 because you have a powerful testimony. 00:00:58.12\00:00:59.75 And we want to touch on that 00:00:59.79\00:01:01.36 as well as find out about the ministry. 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.69 We want to find out about Tanglewood Ministries. 00:01:04.73\00:01:06.56 So Ms. Barbara, how back in, was it 1994? 00:01:06.59\00:01:13.23 Was that was that the year? 00:01:13.27\00:01:14.94 He had the accident? 00:01:14.97\00:01:16.30 Yes. That you had the accident? 00:01:16.34\00:01:17.67 Okay. 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.04 What transpired on that day? 00:01:19.07\00:01:20.44 How did you find out about the accident? 00:01:20.48\00:01:23.28 Okay, Don was a senior at Andrews University 00:01:23.31\00:01:26.85 with one semester left and it was this summer 00:01:26.88\00:01:29.82 and very beautiful day. 00:01:29.85\00:01:32.59 I was out cutting grass, 00:01:32.62\00:01:33.96 when my husband came to the door 00:01:33.99\00:01:35.32 and called and said that there had been 00:01:35.36\00:01:36.73 an accident at Andrews Air Park. 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.39 And we needed to go immediately. 00:01:39.43\00:01:41.73 Wow! 00:01:41.76\00:01:43.10 And so what was running through your mind? 00:01:43.13\00:01:45.03 I know, you had multiple thoughts. 00:01:45.07\00:01:46.40 Well, when he said an accident obviously it meant aircraft. 00:01:46.43\00:01:50.87 I have the unique distinction of having both a husband 00:01:50.91\00:01:54.14 who flies and three sons to fly. 00:01:54.18\00:01:57.11 So it was perhaps, in the background of my mind 00:01:57.15\00:02:00.22 that it's not unusual that perhaps one of them, 00:02:00.25\00:02:03.82 at some point would have an accident. 00:02:03.85\00:02:05.85 Yes. 00:02:05.89\00:02:07.22 And so when we heard that there had been an accident, 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.82 I put the lawn mower up, hopped in the car 00:02:09.86\00:02:12.36 and raced as fast as we could to Andrew's 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.96 about a half an hour away. 00:02:15.00\00:02:16.73 Okay, okay. 00:02:16.77\00:02:18.13 And what was going on that day, Don. 00:02:18.17\00:02:20.27 What happened? 00:02:20.30\00:02:22.30 How did that accident come about? 00:02:22.34\00:02:24.11 Well, earlier that morning, 00:02:24.14\00:02:26.37 a friend of mine who owned the aircraft 00:02:26.41\00:02:30.15 which is called an Ultra light, headed out. 00:02:30.18\00:02:33.15 And another friend was actually flying it. 00:02:33.18\00:02:36.48 And my father had been up that morning. 00:02:36.52\00:02:40.09 He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration 00:02:40.12\00:02:43.36 and he was doing surveillance that morning on the airport. 00:02:43.39\00:02:47.16 And so we were all looking at this machine 00:02:47.20\00:02:51.10 after the pilot who was flying it, 00:02:51.13\00:02:54.47 came back and landed. 00:02:54.50\00:02:56.00 And my dad just basically told me, 00:02:56.04\00:03:01.11 "Don, don't fly this thing." 00:03:01.14\00:03:03.85 You know, don't fly it. Wow! 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.71 So your dad warned you about flying it. 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.72 He had warned me. Yes. 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.08 What is an Ultra light? What is that? 00:03:09.12\00:03:11.65 An Ultra light is a kit built 00:03:11.69\00:03:14.56 or home built aircraft, recreational use. 00:03:14.59\00:03:18.66 One passenger which is a pilot and is flown on nice days. 00:03:18.69\00:03:24.43 And a open cockpit. 00:03:24.47\00:03:28.50 Some people in the past have called them flying lawn chairs. 00:03:28.54\00:03:31.54 Oh, wow! 00:03:31.57\00:03:32.91 Just like my wheel chair, 00:03:32.94\00:03:34.38 with some wings on it and an engine in the back to, 00:03:34.41\00:03:36.61 you know, to push it forward. 00:03:36.64\00:03:38.15 That's a scary. But it sounds comfortable. 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.42 Yeah. Yeah. 00:03:40.45\00:03:41.78 And I thought that that'd be fun to fly. 00:03:41.82\00:03:45.92 And so when my father told me not to fly it. 00:03:45.95\00:03:49.56 I said, "Okay, I won't." 00:03:49.59\00:03:51.59 But inside, I was like, "I'm going fly this thing." 00:03:51.63\00:03:55.16 That makes you want to fly it that much more. 00:03:55.20\00:03:56.53 Well, yeah, yeah. 00:03:56.56\00:03:57.90 And you know, I was 22 at the time 00:03:57.93\00:04:00.67 and I say now young and dumb. 00:04:00.70\00:04:04.84 But more yet, to the heart of the matter, 00:04:04.87\00:04:10.88 rebellious on the inside, you know. 00:04:10.91\00:04:13.18 You know, outwardly, you know, toeing the line. 00:04:13.21\00:04:15.55 You know, doing my part but inwardly, you know, 00:04:15.58\00:04:18.65 I'm going to do things my way. 00:04:18.69\00:04:21.19 And with that in disobedience, 00:04:21.22\00:04:23.66 of course, is a dangerous combination. 00:04:23.69\00:04:27.00 Absolutely. Get's you in trouble. 00:04:27.03\00:04:28.36 Absolutely. That's what happened that day. 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.10 How high were you when you crash 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.20 and what led to the crash? 00:04:32.23\00:04:34.97 Okay, I was told, I was about 75 feet. 00:04:35.00\00:04:37.61 And this was right after takeoff. 00:04:37.64\00:04:40.18 The Ultralight could be flown as a hang glider. 00:04:40.21\00:04:43.48 So it has, what is called a push pull bar 00:04:43.51\00:04:46.48 which is attached to the wings, so when you push the bar out, 00:04:46.51\00:04:51.45 it tips the wing back and you go up. 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.22 If you pull the bar towards you, 00:04:54.26\00:04:56.66 it pulls the wing down and you go down. 00:04:56.69\00:05:02.00 And the way that it is set up 00:05:02.03\00:05:03.97 is the cart is on a harness, I mean, on a pendulum. 00:05:04.00\00:05:08.90 So that no matter if you're going up or down, 00:05:08.94\00:05:11.57 you're still in a level position. 00:05:11.61\00:05:14.78 So when I came down, 00:05:14.81\00:05:16.34 I landed in a seated position like this. 00:05:16.38\00:05:20.32 So my spinal cord absorbed all of that energy. 00:05:20.35\00:05:24.42 And it blew out my thoracic eleventh vertebrae. 00:05:24.45\00:05:27.46 Wow! Yeah. 00:05:27.49\00:05:28.82 That's truly a blessing that you are alive. 00:05:28.86\00:05:31.69 I praise the Lord for it 'cause I should have been dead. 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.40 Yes, yes, yes. 00:05:34.43\00:05:36.87 Now Ms. Barbara, it's also my understanding 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.97 that there were some people that rallied behind you guys 00:05:40.00\00:05:45.01 during this time and provided something 00:05:45.04\00:05:48.04 that was very special and very useful to you. 00:05:48.08\00:05:51.51 Yes, yes, as time went on he went to rehab. 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.85 And then it was an issue, can he get back to life. 00:05:54.88\00:05:58.29 And a group of pilots 00:05:58.32\00:06:00.19 from the South Bend- Mishawaka area 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.46 which was the general area 00:06:02.49\00:06:03.83 in which we lived, one of the gentlemen, 00:06:03.86\00:06:07.06 in particular, came up with an idea. 00:06:07.10\00:06:09.53 He said he was trying to sleep one night. 00:06:09.56\00:06:11.43 He was thinking of Don. 00:06:11.47\00:06:12.80 He was a friend of my husband 00:06:12.83\00:06:14.74 and from his dream or idea, birthed a project. 00:06:14.77\00:06:21.34 And that project was to raise enough money 00:06:21.38\00:06:23.98 to give Don a brand new handicapped accessible van. 00:06:24.01\00:06:28.62 Wow! What a blessing? 00:06:28.65\00:06:29.98 What a blessing? 00:06:30.02\00:06:31.35 And as a result, the word went out 00:06:31.39\00:06:32.82 to the Pilot community 00:06:32.85\00:06:34.72 and over a period of about two to three months, 00:06:34.76\00:06:37.49 they raised somewhere around $ 45,000. 00:06:37.53\00:06:42.36 And then in September of that year, 00:06:42.40\00:06:44.80 they presented Don with a brand new van. 00:06:44.83\00:06:47.87 That's huge, I know you were happy about that. 00:06:47.90\00:06:49.77 I'm still amazed today. Yes, yes. 00:06:49.80\00:06:52.17 It's wow. 00:06:52.21\00:06:53.68 That is a blessing, in fact, the people 00:06:53.71\00:06:55.34 that don't know you 00:06:55.38\00:06:57.21 still rallied behind and supported you. 00:06:57.25\00:06:59.65 And really want to take part in that project. 00:06:59.68\00:07:02.58 Okay, such a powerful story and testimony. 00:07:02.62\00:07:07.82 How did Tanglewood Ministries begin? 00:07:07.86\00:07:11.16 Well, after that time, that I got the van 00:07:11.19\00:07:15.56 and I had moved to Cincinnati to start work 00:07:15.60\00:07:17.97 and I was working at an airport on the east side of town. 00:07:18.00\00:07:21.10 And worked there for about seven and a half years. 00:07:21.14\00:07:24.01 I was able to get married and buy my own home 00:07:24.04\00:07:27.68 and in all of that, so I was living. 00:07:27.71\00:07:29.78 But my health started to go down 00:07:29.81\00:07:36.85 and so around about 2005 my health really, really, 00:07:36.89\00:07:44.26 you know, started to go down. 00:07:44.29\00:07:45.86 My marriage was coming apart at that time 00:07:45.89\00:07:48.43 and I had to also resigned from work 00:07:48.46\00:07:51.33 because of health reasons. 00:07:51.37\00:07:52.80 So that was a real low period in my life, 00:07:52.83\00:07:56.50 all the way through 2007. 00:07:56.54\00:07:59.07 And in 2007, I was in despair and actually wanted to die. 00:07:59.11\00:08:07.02 But I just thank the Lord that he had other plans. 00:08:07.05\00:08:10.69 And at that time I went through a leg amputation. 00:08:10.72\00:08:13.76 And also my father was killed 00:08:13.79\00:08:17.09 in a car pedestrian accident in front of our home. 00:08:17.13\00:08:20.90 And so it was in, let's see, in 2008 00:08:20.93\00:08:24.03 that I was in a hospital for a second leg amputation. 00:08:24.07\00:08:29.30 And I'll let mom take over the story here 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.34 because she did a visitation that day. 00:08:31.37\00:08:34.91 Don was just about ready to get out the hospital 00:08:34.94\00:08:37.35 with the second leg amputation. 00:08:37.38\00:08:39.58 And the elderly friend of ours went into 00:08:39.61\00:08:43.72 and assisted living private pay facility. 00:08:43.75\00:08:46.96 And I decided to go visit her, to see how she was doing. 00:08:46.99\00:08:50.66 And as I was leaving she had said, 00:08:50.69\00:08:53.06 you know, I like the facility. 00:08:53.09\00:08:54.90 It's is a beautiful place. 00:08:54.93\00:08:57.07 People are very nice but the one thing 00:08:57.10\00:08:58.90 I don't like is, I don't get to go to church anymore. 00:08:58.93\00:09:03.00 And so, you know, I can't get out or anything. 00:09:03.04\00:09:07.18 And I heard myself saying to her, "Well! 00:09:07.21\00:09:09.68 You know that's something I could do. 00:09:09.71\00:09:11.25 I would be happy to start a church service here. 00:09:11.28\00:09:14.45 I've been involved in ShareHim 00:09:14.48\00:09:16.28 and preached in three or four countries. 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.15 You know, I can do that. 00:09:19.19\00:09:20.72 And so I spoke with the activities' leader 00:09:20.76\00:09:23.59 and she said, "You'd come every week 00:09:23.63\00:09:26.06 and do a church service?" 00:09:26.09\00:09:27.43 And I said, "Sure, I'd be happy to." 00:09:27.46\00:09:30.60 And when can we do it and after much talking, 00:09:30.63\00:09:34.64 it became apparent that the best time for them 00:09:34.67\00:09:37.61 was Sunday evening, 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.31 when I normally would be watching 60 Minutes. 00:09:39.34\00:09:41.91 Wow! 00:09:41.94\00:09:43.28 Way just like, you know, my day is gone. 00:09:43.31\00:09:45.88 So I said, "Yeah I'll do it. 00:09:45.91\00:09:47.72 So we started after supper on Sunday evening. 00:09:47.75\00:09:50.99 And so we've been doing a weekly service 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.56 ever since during that hour. 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.86 Wow! okay. 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.93 Now, number one, you're a very strong woman. 00:09:57.96\00:10:02.93 How did you feel, I mean, to have your son 00:10:02.96\00:10:07.30 going through this at the time, losing your husband? 00:10:07.34\00:10:10.21 How did you? 00:10:10.24\00:10:11.91 How did you make it through that tough time? 00:10:11.94\00:10:13.94 And what helped? It's only the Lord obviously. 00:10:13.98\00:10:16.88 I mean, you're going through so many emotions, 00:10:16.91\00:10:20.22 basically you're trying to figure out 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.18 what your finances are going be? 00:10:22.22\00:10:23.55 Because now your income is going to be cut. 00:10:23.59\00:10:25.52 Because your primary source of income is no longer there. 00:10:25.55\00:10:30.43 And then, of course, he was living with us 00:10:30.46\00:10:32.26 about that time which meant 00:10:32.29\00:10:33.63 that basically I was the caregiver. 00:10:33.66\00:10:36.90 And you know, it's like, you know, 00:10:36.93\00:10:38.77 "Lord, there's so much going on 00:10:38.80\00:10:41.50 and I need something different." 00:10:41.54\00:10:43.17 And I saw getting out and getting back 00:10:43.20\00:10:46.21 involved in ministry is something he did. 00:10:46.24\00:10:47.94 I could do. That would be good for me. 00:10:47.98\00:10:49.78 Okay. Okay. 00:10:49.81\00:10:52.15 And, Don, how are you feeling at the time 00:10:52.18\00:10:54.35 of with this ministry beginning? 00:10:54.38\00:10:57.22 And how did you feel about taking part in that? 00:10:57.25\00:11:01.26 Well, I was happy to help. 00:11:01.29\00:11:03.26 But my attitude was that this was her ministry. 00:11:03.29\00:11:08.06 I never had any aspirations of, 00:11:08.10\00:11:12.53 you know, working with elderly seniors. 00:11:12.57\00:11:15.50 You know, I had thought that, 00:11:15.54\00:11:16.87 you know, I wouldn't mind working with, 00:11:16.91\00:11:18.71 you know, grown adults but I never saw 00:11:18.74\00:11:22.41 my calling into senior ministry. 00:11:22.44\00:11:26.28 But I thank the Lord for it. 00:11:26.31\00:11:27.75 It's one of the best things that's ever happened to me. 00:11:27.78\00:11:30.79 Yes, that's a blessing as well. 00:11:30.82\00:11:33.76 What challenges? 00:11:33.79\00:11:35.12 What are some of the challenges that. 00:11:35.16\00:11:37.16 TWM has faced spiritually or otherwise? 00:11:37.19\00:11:41.80 Well, for us, when we came into ministry, 00:11:41.83\00:11:46.20 we came with the idea that, you know, we've got a, 00:11:46.23\00:11:49.77 you know, we'll preached the doctrinal truth 00:11:49.80\00:11:51.87 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:11:51.91\00:11:53.24 We really wanted to emphasize that. 00:11:53.27\00:11:56.11 We're also doing, you know, all of the formalities 00:11:56.14\00:12:02.15 of a church service. 00:12:02.18\00:12:03.52 You know, we only have one hour. 00:12:03.55\00:12:05.55 So you know, after doing all those formalities, 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.99 we end up with about 10 minutes left for the word. 00:12:08.02\00:12:11.69 And the Lord intervened in our lives personally 00:12:11.73\00:12:17.80 and you know, brought it to my attention 00:12:17.83\00:12:21.30 that we really needed to focus on... 00:12:21.34\00:12:25.11 Lifting up Jesus. Lifting up Jesus. 00:12:25.14\00:12:28.28 And when we lift up Jesus, he would do the drawing. 00:12:28.31\00:12:32.05 And all of that doctrines will fall in to place. 00:12:32.08\00:12:33.55 All of the doctrinal truths will fall, 00:12:33.58\00:12:35.75 you know, right into place as we walk through the Bible, 00:12:35.78\00:12:39.05 you know, which we're doing now. 00:12:39.09\00:12:41.19 Also, we have trimmed down our service. 00:12:41.22\00:12:43.89 Because we only have a half hour. 00:12:43.93\00:12:45.73 An hour. 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.10 Oh! We've an hour. 00:12:47.13\00:12:48.46 But actually in our memory care services, 00:12:48.50\00:12:53.87 we only have a half hour. 00:12:53.90\00:12:55.24 So we don't have a lot of time for all of the extras. 00:12:55.27\00:12:58.67 So we focus on singing the hymns. 00:12:58.71\00:13:02.84 You know, the elderly love the hymns. 00:13:02.88\00:13:05.71 Also, prayer, that's very important 00:13:05.75\00:13:07.88 in getting into the word. 00:13:07.92\00:13:09.62 Those are the three basics and then we add, 00:13:09.65\00:13:11.85 you know, special music, the appeal song. 00:13:11.89\00:13:15.92 But really tried to focus those emphasis 00:13:15.96\00:13:18.46 on the singing, praying. 00:13:18.49\00:13:20.96 And the word. And the Bible. 00:13:21.00\00:13:23.13 And that's what our program is based around, 00:13:23.16\00:13:25.73 you know, week after week. 00:13:25.77\00:13:27.10 That's great. 00:13:27.14\00:13:28.47 And I like, what you said about 00:13:28.50\00:13:29.84 the doctrinal truth being in and just focusing on the word. 00:13:29.87\00:13:34.34 And I mean... The truth come forward. 00:13:34.38\00:13:35.71 And the truth is in there. Right. 00:13:35.74\00:13:37.45 You just have to find it. 00:13:37.48\00:13:38.81 Yeah, 'cause we actually got pushback from, 00:13:38.85\00:13:41.02 you know, from the folks who were coming. 00:13:41.05\00:13:45.49 You know we started to get pushbacks 00:13:45.52\00:13:46.86 on some of those things because they're coming from, 00:13:46.89\00:13:48.59 you know, different faiths backgrounds. 00:13:48.62\00:13:51.46 And we found that it's not they that need to change. 00:13:51.49\00:13:55.00 We needed to change. 00:13:55.03\00:13:56.36 And when that focus changed for us personally 00:13:56.40\00:14:00.07 and then corporately as a ministry, 00:14:00.10\00:14:03.07 the ministry just started to grow. 00:14:03.10\00:14:06.78 And we saw the Lord just doing wonderful things. 00:14:06.81\00:14:10.91 And still is today. 00:14:10.95\00:14:12.45 The other thing that also happened was that 00:14:12.48\00:14:15.52 before when we first started, 00:14:15.55\00:14:17.82 you know, we got this service on Sunday night. 00:14:17.85\00:14:20.32 And you know, okay, we've got the service. 00:14:20.36\00:14:23.93 But now we're spending... 00:14:23.96\00:14:27.30 When we end our service on Sunday, 00:14:27.33\00:14:28.86 we begin to get ready for next week service. 00:14:28.90\00:14:32.00 And what that said to each of us 00:14:32.03\00:14:34.40 we needed to make sure 00:14:34.44\00:14:35.77 that we were spending time in prayer 00:14:35.80\00:14:37.27 and personal Bible study. 00:14:37.31\00:14:39.47 And then literally I do a lot of the special music 00:14:39.51\00:14:42.74 but the question is I can't just sing any song. 00:14:42.78\00:14:47.12 What's a sermon going to be about? 00:14:47.15\00:14:49.15 And my song needs to be an appeal-song 00:14:49.18\00:14:52.79 that would capsulate 00:14:52.82\00:14:54.62 what the speaker was talking about. 00:14:54.66\00:14:56.93 And that can be a challenge. I believe. 00:14:56.96\00:15:00.03 Because you can't just come up with a song 00:15:00.06\00:15:01.96 and put it with the sermon. 00:15:02.00\00:15:04.07 And you have to ask God, 00:15:04.10\00:15:05.43 "What song should I sing at the end of that sermon 00:15:05.47\00:15:09.67 that will say what you wanted to say 00:15:09.70\00:15:12.01 that to appeal to those folks' heart?" 00:15:12.04\00:15:14.71 And God comes through, when I come through. 00:15:14.74\00:15:18.81 When I do what I need to do, He gives you the right song, 00:15:18.85\00:15:23.18 that's just the song that needed to have been 00:15:23.22\00:15:25.65 sung after that sermon. 00:15:25.69\00:15:27.19 And it's been awesome to see the response of the people. 00:15:27.22\00:15:31.73 That's beautiful. 00:15:31.76\00:15:33.26 It's so amazing what you guys are doing 00:15:33.29\00:15:35.40 because I mean, when you go to some of these facilities 00:15:35.43\00:15:38.10 and you realize there's some loved ones 00:15:38.13\00:15:40.17 that are in there, that have no visitors. 00:15:40.20\00:15:42.57 They have nobody that comes to visit them. 00:15:42.60\00:15:44.77 So you guys are sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:15:44.81\00:15:47.61 And you're also providing them with visitors. 00:15:47.64\00:15:50.68 And showing them that people still love them 00:15:50.71\00:15:53.25 and they're not forgotten. 00:15:53.28\00:15:54.62 And I think that is excellent. 00:15:54.65\00:15:56.69 What are some of the miracles 00:15:56.72\00:15:58.05 that you guys have witnessed in some of these facilities? 00:15:58.09\00:16:02.42 Probably the lady who initially asked 00:16:02.46\00:16:06.43 that we consider coming, had moved from her home 00:16:06.46\00:16:09.63 after being in it 40, 50 years, into a facility 00:16:09.66\00:16:13.44 and came kicking and screaming. 00:16:13.47\00:16:16.37 Her children said you're going. 00:16:16.40\00:16:20.74 Only to discover that a couple years later 00:16:20.78\00:16:23.24 because of health or finances, she had to move again 00:16:23.28\00:16:27.28 and to hear her say, you know, 00:16:27.32\00:16:29.38 I came here not wanting to come. 00:16:29.42\00:16:32.12 But because of your weekly service, 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.19 I now have a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:16:34.22\00:16:37.69 And wherever I go it will be okay 00:16:37.73\00:16:40.86 because I know I am taking Jesus with me. 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.67 That is just amazing. 00:16:43.70\00:16:47.20 It touches your heart. Yes. 00:16:47.24\00:16:48.57 It does. Yes. 00:16:48.60\00:16:49.94 It does. Yes. 00:16:49.97\00:16:51.31 What training do you'll have 00:16:51.34\00:16:53.48 that prepared you for this work? 00:16:53.51\00:16:57.75 The Lord. 00:16:57.78\00:16:59.31 Being willing is... And open... 00:16:59.35\00:17:01.55 Is the primary prerequisite. 00:17:01.58\00:17:04.85 You know, the background that we have, 00:17:04.89\00:17:08.79 that we have brought, you know, as you know, being, 00:17:08.82\00:17:11.83 you know, members of the church, 00:17:11.86\00:17:13.19 you know, having been a part 00:17:13.23\00:17:14.56 of Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:17:14.60\00:17:15.93 obviously is helpful. 00:17:15.96\00:17:17.30 But really a willing heart 00:17:17.33\00:17:18.67 and a willingness to get on your knees 00:17:18.70\00:17:20.44 and pray Lord, "teach me, show me." 00:17:20.47\00:17:23.34 And because we look back at, you know. 00:17:23.37\00:17:26.17 Early services... 00:17:26.21\00:17:27.58 When we first started, it's like, "Wow! 00:17:27.61\00:17:30.61 We did that." 00:17:30.65\00:17:31.98 But the Lord has taken our stumbles and He's blessed. 00:17:32.01\00:17:37.89 And we're still growing and learning. 00:17:37.92\00:17:40.26 But being willing to be used and to wear multiple hats 00:17:40.29\00:17:43.96 because you know we have a team of ten. 00:17:43.99\00:17:47.13 But you know, from week after week, 00:17:47.16\00:17:49.16 you know, we have to adjust. 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.53 You know, sometimes we're speaking, 00:17:50.57\00:17:51.90 sometimes we're not. 00:17:51.93\00:17:53.27 We do have two main speakers 00:17:53.30\00:17:54.70 but you know sometimes they're not always there. 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.64 So somebody else has to step up 00:17:56.67\00:17:58.87 and speak or sing or what have you. 00:17:58.91\00:18:02.04 But being willing, being willing, has been the, 00:18:02.08\00:18:07.22 you know, the best thing for us. 00:18:07.25\00:18:09.62 And you know, God has led and he has provided. 00:18:09.65\00:18:12.95 Very excited. Amen. 00:18:12.99\00:18:14.32 And being able to realize 00:18:14.36\00:18:16.66 that visitation is a part of this. 00:18:16.69\00:18:18.79 You know, we originally committed 00:18:18.83\00:18:20.33 for an hour on Sunday evening. 00:18:20.36\00:18:22.36 But we're now taking a day of week for visitation. 00:18:22.40\00:18:25.77 We have people who end up in hospitals 00:18:25.80\00:18:27.67 or in other facilities. 00:18:27.70\00:18:30.31 Last year we had twenty people that died. 00:18:30.34\00:18:34.24 Already this year we've probably lost eight or ten. 00:18:34.28\00:18:37.91 So we're attending funerals. 00:18:37.95\00:18:40.02 Or at least the wakes 00:18:40.05\00:18:42.58 and that even open another ministry 00:18:42.62\00:18:44.59 because now when someone dies, 00:18:44.62\00:18:47.79 we make up a packet that includes a good book 00:18:47.82\00:18:52.49 which we're using A Great Hope, 00:18:52.53\00:18:54.90 right now which is the last three chapters-- 00:18:54.93\00:18:57.03 Last nine chapters are Great Controversy, 00:18:57.07\00:18:59.50 with the corresponding postcard that Nathan Green did. 00:18:59.53\00:19:02.87 And we put those in an envelope, 00:19:02.90\00:19:04.27 put a message on it. 00:19:04.31\00:19:06.01 And we make up one up 00:19:06.04\00:19:07.38 for every immediate family members. 00:19:07.41\00:19:09.91 So if a wife died, the husband and any children get it. 00:19:09.94\00:19:13.95 If the mom dies then we give it to the children and. 00:19:13.98\00:19:16.92 Just last week, we gave away nine. 00:19:16.95\00:19:20.62 And of course, that, they cost. We have no budget. 00:19:20.66\00:19:25.36 But what happens is that someone would press 00:19:25.39\00:19:27.73 some money in our hands 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.43 which enables us to continue to make up those packets 00:19:29.46\00:19:33.03 and we figure that the packet costs about 350 each. 00:19:33.07\00:19:37.31 And a decent nice card from Hallmark 00:19:37.34\00:19:40.44 would probably cost three fifty 00:19:40.48\00:19:42.01 and which they're going to pitch. 00:19:42.04\00:19:43.81 But they're holding on 00:19:43.85\00:19:45.18 to those Great Controversy books 00:19:45.21\00:19:46.88 into the picture of the Second Coming. 00:19:46.92\00:19:51.25 Wow! So it's been a need. 00:19:51.29\00:19:53.22 So we're interacting with family members 00:19:53.25\00:19:56.12 that we had no idea we'd ever get a chance to. 00:19:56.16\00:19:59.93 Wow! Impacting so many lives. 00:19:59.96\00:20:02.40 We have some pictures of you guys in action 00:20:02.43\00:20:05.57 that I'd like for our viewers to see. 00:20:05.60\00:20:07.34 So as we put those on the screen 00:20:07.37\00:20:09.27 why don't you describe that for me, Don. 00:20:09.30\00:20:11.87 This is Pauline Finn. 00:20:11.91\00:20:13.27 And she was the inspiration to start Tanglewood Ministries. 00:20:13.31\00:20:17.05 Wow! Very important lady. 00:20:17.08\00:20:20.22 And again this is us during, 00:20:20.25\00:20:22.45 I think, that was a Christmas service 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.89 that we were doing. 00:20:24.92\00:20:28.02 And this is one of our team members, 00:20:28.06\00:20:29.66 Bob Cassini and he was speaking to Mrs. Finn. 00:20:29.69\00:20:32.93 And I believe they were talking about 00:20:32.96\00:20:35.36 a Bible topic on that particular shot. 00:20:35.40\00:20:37.87 Oh, wow! Yes. 00:20:37.90\00:20:39.30 And this is Eva. 00:20:39.33\00:20:40.67 She is our lady who does the health nugget. 00:20:40.70\00:20:44.34 And she's demonstrating some of the exercises 00:20:44.37\00:20:48.18 that she wants some of the people to do. 00:20:48.21\00:20:51.21 And this is a view of the room 00:20:51.25\00:20:53.25 in which we do the worship service. 00:20:53.28\00:20:56.38 And this is Charles. 00:20:56.42\00:20:57.75 He's our main speaker and doing a sermon 00:20:57.79\00:21:00.79 on the sacrificial offering the lamb 00:21:00.82\00:21:04.29 that was brought to the tabernacle. 00:21:04.33\00:21:07.46 And this is McGill. 00:21:07.50\00:21:08.96 And he's also one of our speakers. 00:21:09.00\00:21:12.30 And he's got a model there of the sanctuary 00:21:12.33\00:21:17.07 that God instructed Moses to build. 00:21:17.11\00:21:20.64 And so we did a whole series on the sanctuary. 00:21:20.68\00:21:24.25 And this is from Faith, she's one of our musicians. 00:21:24.28\00:21:29.02 Of course, mom here doing one of the sermons. 00:21:29.05\00:21:33.89 That's for music. 00:21:33.92\00:21:35.29 Oh, I didn't know that you can play guitar. 00:21:35.32\00:21:36.66 Just a little bit, just a little bit. 00:21:36.69\00:21:38.23 But I do play. Yes. 00:21:38.26\00:21:40.26 And this is our end of the year program 00:21:40.30\00:21:42.33 we call it the Agape feast. 00:21:42.36\00:21:44.63 And it's just a really nice service 00:21:44.67\00:21:47.60 that we do each year. 00:21:47.64\00:21:49.64 The tables are lined up in the form of a cross 00:21:49.67\00:21:52.24 and we have the lights dimmed. 00:21:52.27\00:21:53.68 And there're some candles up there. 00:21:53.71\00:21:55.84 And nice, some food, 00:21:55.88\00:21:58.88 you know, some finger foods and things like that. 00:21:58.91\00:22:01.08 It's just a really nice service to end out each year. 00:22:01.12\00:22:04.25 And then this is our team. 00:22:04.29\00:22:06.25 We've got Clinton, and in front, Faith, 00:22:06.29\00:22:09.06 and McGill and his wife Titta. 00:22:09.09\00:22:10.86 And Bob and Eva Kasznia, and Rebecca and Charles Pates. 00:22:10.89\00:22:16.26 Yeah. So that's our team. 00:22:16.30\00:22:17.63 Wow! Yeah. 00:22:17.67\00:22:19.00 Wow! Wow! Yeah. 00:22:19.03\00:22:21.30 Well. 00:22:21.34\00:22:22.67 How can someone who wants to become involved 00:22:22.70\00:22:24.97 with senior ministry, how can they get involved? 00:22:25.01\00:22:27.64 What do they need to do? 00:22:27.68\00:22:29.11 Well, the easiest way would be to hopefully know 00:22:29.14\00:22:33.18 someone in the facility that helps. 00:22:33.21\00:22:36.08 But then speak with the activities leader 00:22:36.12\00:22:39.69 and arrange a time that's convenient for everyone. 00:22:39.72\00:22:43.59 Ideally, maybe you think it needs to be on Sabbath. 00:22:43.63\00:22:46.63 But Sabbath might not be a day 00:22:46.66\00:22:48.53 you want to commit to doing something. 00:22:48.56\00:22:51.70 But work with the activity folk. 00:22:51.73\00:22:54.14 And we're doing two Thursday services 00:22:54.17\00:22:57.67 and one Sunday night, well, at this point. 00:22:57.71\00:23:00.24 And how did you select those days in particular? 00:23:00.28\00:23:02.54 I know you still watch 60 Minutes on Sunday night? 00:23:02.58\00:23:06.15 Sunday night was because it worked 00:23:06.18\00:23:08.55 in with their schedule 00:23:08.58\00:23:09.92 and it worked in with our schedule. 00:23:09.95\00:23:11.45 And then Thursdays, we have also expanded 00:23:11.49\00:23:15.52 to a mailing list. 00:23:15.56\00:23:17.19 And we do about a little over two hundred sermons that 00:23:17.23\00:23:20.90 of which about 35 of them we hand deliver. 00:23:20.93\00:23:25.57 And the rest we mail. 00:23:25.60\00:23:27.54 And two of the individuals had left Tanglewood 00:23:27.57\00:23:31.24 and went someplace else and we were just dropping off 00:23:31.27\00:23:33.94 hand their sermon outlines each week. 00:23:33.98\00:23:37.05 But the activity leader had been a Tanglewood, 00:23:37.08\00:23:39.41 and this is not and that a new facility. 00:23:39.45\00:23:42.22 And she asked, "Would you consider 00:23:42.25\00:23:43.95 doing a service here?" 00:23:43.99\00:23:45.72 And since we were going there every weekend anyway, 00:23:45.75\00:23:47.96 we decided, "Yes we could stay half an hour." 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.93 And this is memory care, so their memories are short. 00:23:50.96\00:23:54.06 Yes. 00:23:54.10\00:23:55.43 But they love the sing the hymns. 00:23:55.46\00:23:56.97 And so basically we do abbreviated service. 00:23:57.00\00:23:59.50 We sing most of the time. 00:23:59.53\00:24:01.94 I do about a five minute talk that includes scripture. 00:24:01.97\00:24:07.64 And so we read, try to read familiar passages 00:24:07.68\00:24:10.91 that some of them still know, like the Twenty third Psalms. 00:24:10.95\00:24:13.82 Or John 14:1-3. 00:24:13.85\00:24:17.45 And others that are fairly familiar. 00:24:17.49\00:24:20.16 And they literally wake up, 00:24:20.19\00:24:22.12 sometimes they're totally out there 00:24:22.16\00:24:23.86 but when we get there, starting singing the hymns. 00:24:23.89\00:24:26.83 They wake up. 00:24:26.86\00:24:28.20 They sing with this us in harmony 00:24:28.23\00:24:30.57 and in tune for half an hour. 00:24:30.60\00:24:33.34 Yes, it is. 00:24:33.37\00:24:34.70 And to see that happen week after week, 00:24:34.74\00:24:37.34 is just amazing. 00:24:37.37\00:24:39.04 Well, we want to tell people 00:24:39.07\00:24:40.81 how to get in touch with you and how to reach you. 00:24:40.84\00:24:43.88 You can contact. 00:24:43.91\00:24:45.28 Tanglewood Ministries by sending them a mail 00:24:45.31\00:24:48.08 at South Bend First Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 00:24:48.12\00:24:51.85 1936 East Altgeld street, South Bend, Indiana 46614. 00:24:51.89\00:24:59.66 Or via phone at (574)654-7320. 00:24:59.69\00:25:05.73 And they also have a website, sbadventist.org. 00:25:05.77\00:25:12.47 Well, it is such a wonderful ministry that you all have. 00:25:12.51\00:25:19.35 Okay. 00:25:19.38\00:25:20.72 I want to know how it co-relates 00:25:20.75\00:25:22.28 with the Adventist Church, like with the mission 00:25:22.32\00:25:24.59 of South Bend Adventist Church. 00:25:24.62\00:25:27.26 How does it, how does it work with that? 00:25:27.29\00:25:31.06 Well we're a supporting ministry 00:25:31.09\00:25:32.79 but we work closely with the church. 00:25:32.83\00:25:35.40 And they have been very supportive 00:25:35.43\00:25:37.27 of what we're doing and even provided Bibles for us 00:25:37.30\00:25:41.00 because we needed super large print, giant print Bibles 00:25:41.04\00:25:44.64 and we were able to get those, and... 00:25:44.67\00:25:46.68 But they've been very helpful, supportive and encouraging. 00:25:46.71\00:25:51.21 And that's been... 00:25:51.25\00:25:52.71 you know, just a great relationship. 00:25:52.75\00:25:54.35 Yeah. 00:25:54.38\00:25:55.72 And I was just gonna add 00:25:55.75\00:25:57.09 that all of the team members are members 00:25:57.12\00:25:59.35 of our First church as well. 00:25:59.39\00:26:01.42 Oh! wow, so you'll the church who is involved in. 00:26:01.46\00:26:05.23 What is it like with the short time 00:26:05.26\00:26:07.23 that we have left, 00:26:07.26\00:26:08.60 what is it like having your son in ministry? 00:26:08.63\00:26:12.43 My mother and I work together. My mom's Yvonne Lewis. 00:26:12.47\00:26:16.20 Yes. And so we're both in ministry. 00:26:16.24\00:26:18.67 And ...but what is it like 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.68 from a mother's perspective working hand in hand 00:26:20.71\00:26:23.95 with your son serving the Lord? 00:26:23.98\00:26:25.98 It's been exciting. He's a good compliment for me. 00:26:26.01\00:26:31.55 We generally get along quite well. 00:26:31.59\00:26:35.16 And we've discovered that we harmonize quite nicely 00:26:35.19\00:26:38.46 in singing as well in music aspect. 00:26:38.49\00:26:41.93 And often times think somewhat alike so. 00:26:41.96\00:26:45.30 He's been a wonderful asset and the technical things, 00:26:45.33\00:26:48.80 particularly, sound systems and that, kind of thing, 00:26:48.84\00:26:52.04 I don't have to worry about the computer and all that. 00:26:52.07\00:26:55.44 And what's it like working with your mom? 00:26:55.48\00:26:58.08 It's been a good partnership. 00:26:58.11\00:27:01.35 To follow her lead but yet also make suggestions, 00:27:01.38\00:27:07.32 maybe we should do things this way. 00:27:07.36\00:27:09.12 But the Lord has blessed and you know, 00:27:09.16\00:27:11.66 He's the focus and He's the attention. 00:27:11.69\00:27:13.80 And when you co-laboring with Christ 00:27:13.83\00:27:17.50 and with family it's just, has been real exciting. 00:27:17.53\00:27:21.24 Yeah.
