when my husband came to the door

an accident at Andrews Air Park.

And we needed to go immediately.

running through your mind?

multiple thoughts.

Well, when he said an accident
obviously it meant aircraft.

I have the unique distinction
of having both a husband

who flies and three sons to fly.

So it was perhaps, in
the background of my mind

that it's not unusual
that perhaps one of them,

at some point
would have an accident.

And so when we heard that
there had been an accident,

I put the lawn mower
up, hopped in the car

and raced as fast
as we could to Andrew's

about a half an hour away.

And what was
going on that day, Don.

What happened?

How did that
accident come about?

Well, earlier that morning,

a friend of mine
who owned the aircraft

which is called an
Ultra light, headed out.

And another friend
was actually flying it.

And my father had
been up that morning.
00:02:36.52\00:02:40.09
He worked for the
Federal Aviation Administration

and he was doing surveillance
that morning on the airport.

And so we were all
looking at this machine

after the pilot
who was flying it,
00:02:51.13\00:02:54.47
came back and landed.

And my dad just
basically told me,

"Don, don't fly this thing."

You know, don't fly it. Wow!

So your dad warned
you about flying it.

He had warned me. Yes.

What is an Ultra
light? What is that?

An Ultra light is a kit built

aircraft, recreational use.

pilot and is flown on nice days.

Some people in the past have
called them flying lawn chairs.

Just like my wheel chair,

And so when my father
told me not to fly it.

I said, "Okay, I won't."

But inside, I was like,
"I'm going fly this thing."

was 22 at the time

And with that in disobedience,

what happened that day.

I was about 75 feet.

And this was
right after takeoff.

The Ultralight could
be flown as a hang glider.

So it has, what is
called a push pull bar

which is attached to the wings,
so when you push the bar out,

back and you go up.

And the way that it is set up

it's also my understanding

that rallied behind you guys

Yes, yes, as time
went on he went to rehab.

And then it was an
issue, can he get back to life.

And a group of pilots

from the South
Bend- Mishawaka area

which was the general area

in which we lived,
one of the gentlemen,

in particular,
came up with an idea.

He said he was
trying to sleep one night.

He was thinking of Don.

He was a friend of my husband

and from his dream or
idea, birthed a project.

And that project was
to raise enough money

to give Don a brand new
handicapped accessible van.

And as a result,
the word went out

to the Pilot community

and over a period of
about two to three months,

somewhere around $ 45,000.

And then in
September of that year,

they presented Don
with a brand new van.

you were happy about that.

I'm still
amazed today. Yes, yes.

blessing, in fact, the people

behind and supported you.

powerful story and testimony.

How did
Tanglewood Ministries begin?

Well, after that
time, that I got the van
00:07:11.19\00:07:15.56
and I had moved to
Cincinnati to start work
00:07:15.60\00:07:17.97
and I was working at an airport
on the east side of town.
00:07:18.00\00:07:21.10
And worked there for
about seven and a half years.
00:07:21.14\00:07:24.01
I was able to get
married and buy my own home
00:07:24.04\00:07:27.68
and in all of
that, so I was living.
00:07:27.71\00:07:29.78
But my health started to go down
00:07:29.81\00:07:36.85
and so around about 2005
my health really, really,

you know, started to go down.

My marriage was
coming apart at that time

and I had to also
resigned from work

because of health reasons.

So that was a real
low period in my life,

all the way through 2007.

And in 2007, I was in despair
and actually wanted to die.

But I just thank the
Lord that he had other plans.

And at that time I went
through a leg amputation.

And also my father was killed
00:08:13.79\00:08:17.09
in a car pedestrian
accident in front of our home.

And so it was in,
let's see, in 2008

that I was in a hospital
for a second leg amputation.

And I'll let mom
take over the story here

because she did a
visitation that day.

Don was just about
ready to get out the hospital

with the second leg amputation.

And the elderly
friend of ours went into

and assisted living
private pay facility.

And I decided to go visit
her, to see how she was doing.

And as I was
leaving she had said,

you know, I like the facility.

It's is a beautiful place.

People are very
nice but the one thing

I don't like is, I don't
get to go to church anymore.

And so, you know, I
can't get out or anything.

And I heard myself
saying to her, "Well!

You know that's
something I could do.

I would be happy to
start a church service here.

I've been involved in ShareHim

and preached in
three or four countries.

You know, I can do that.

And so I spoke with
the activities' leader

and she said,
"You'd come every week

and do a church service?"

And I said,
"Sure, I'd be happy to."

And when can we do it
and after much talking,

it became apparent
that the best time for them

was Sunday evening,

when I normally would
be watching 60 Minutes.

Way just like, you
know, my day is gone.

So I said, "Yeah I'll do it.

So we started after
supper on Sunday evening.

And so we've been
doing a weekly service

ever since during that hour.

Now, number one,
you're a very strong woman.

How did you feel, I
mean, to have your son

going through this at the
time, losing your husband?

And what helped? It's
only the Lord obviously.

I mean, you're going
through so many emotions,

basically you're
trying to figure out

what your finances are going be?

Because now your
income is going to be cut.

Because your primary source
of income is no longer there.

And then, of course,
he was living with us

about that time which meant

that basically I
was the caregiver.

"Lord, there's so much going on

and I need something different."

out and getting back

ministry is something he did.

the challenges that.

Well, for us, when
we came into ministry,

we came with the idea
that, you know, we've got a,

preached the doctrinal truth

Seventh-day Adventist Church.

We really wanted
to emphasize that.

We're also doing, you
know, all of the formalities

of a church service.

You know, we only have one hour.

So you know, after
doing all those formalities,

we end up with about 10
minutes left for the word.

And the Lord intervened
in our lives personally

And that's what our

before when we first started,

service on Sunday night.

we begin to get ready

spending time in prayer

challenge. I believe.

Only to discover
