Are you a minority professional who feels as though 00:00:01.33\00:00:03.83 your company has some unwritten rules? 00:00:03.90\00:00:06.53 How can you position yourself for success? 00:00:06.57\00:00:09.10 Well, stay tuned to hear all about it... 00:00:09.14\00:00:11.64 My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:11.67\00:00:13.11 and you're watching Urban Report... 00:00:13.14\00:00:15.01 Hello and welcome to Urban Report... 00:00:38.93\00:00:41.04 My guest today is Keith Wyche Speaker and Author of 00:00:41.07\00:00:45.64 "Good Is Not Enough" 00:00:45.67\00:00:47.01 Welcome to Urban Report Keith... 00:00:47.04\00:00:49.08 Thank you so much for having me... 00:00:49.11\00:00:51.15 Oh, man, Keith, you have such great information 00:00:51.18\00:00:54.92 in your book, "Good Is Not Enough" 00:00:54.95\00:00:57.85 What was the motivation for writing that book? 00:00:57.89\00:01:00.99 You know, the motivation really stemmed from the fact that 00:01:01.02\00:01:04.73 when I was in Corporate America initially 00:01:04.76\00:01:06.70 in the early 1980s... there were not a lot of people 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.46 who looked like me in leadership positions 00:01:09.50\00:01:12.10 and the few that were there kind of had a 00:01:12.13\00:01:14.30 "Crab in the Barrel" mentality that said, 00:01:14.34\00:01:16.47 "Hey, I got mine, you get yours" 00:01:16.50\00:01:18.37 and so I promised myself, if I ever got to any level of 00:01:18.41\00:01:22.88 significance, so to speak, in Corporate America 00:01:22.91\00:01:25.08 I would document and codify those lessons 00:01:25.11\00:01:27.42 and the mistakes that I've learned and others 00:01:27.45\00:01:30.09 to share with that next generation of leadership 00:01:30.12\00:01:32.29 because I think, 00:01:32.32\00:01:33.66 "True leaders make sure that they create future leaders. " 00:01:33.69\00:01:36.32 Absolutely, it is so important that we're all in here together 00:01:36.36\00:01:42.60 so we need to help each other out... 00:01:42.63\00:01:44.37 we need to identify the different aspects of the journey 00:01:44.40\00:01:49.44 that we need to share and pass on... 00:01:49.47\00:01:51.94 so that others can kind of take advantage 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.64 of the benefits that we were blessed with... 00:01:54.68\00:01:57.45 Absolutely... it is particularly important 00:01:57.48\00:02:00.22 for women and people of color 00:02:00.25\00:02:02.78 who have not typically had role models of people 00:02:02.85\00:02:05.52 maybe... in their families 00:02:05.55\00:02:06.89 to pass these lessons down and so 00:02:06.92\00:02:08.59 if you didn't grow up in a family 00:02:08.62\00:02:10.39 with a Corporate Executive or a Leader... 00:02:10.43\00:02:12.46 you may not be aware of some of these unwritten rules. 00:02:12.49\00:02:15.43 Yes, yes... let's go back and kind of look at your journey 00:02:15.46\00:02:18.53 because I think you've had a really interesting life too... 00:02:18.57\00:02:21.64 Where did you grow up? 00:02:21.67\00:02:23.00 I grew up in the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio... 00:02:23.04\00:02:26.27 a child of the 60s... 00:02:26.31\00:02:27.78 so, I grew up through the Civil Rights era... 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.81 I don't just remember Selma from the movie... 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.85 I actually remember living through it... 00:02:33.88\00:02:35.72 and so it was a very difficult time, 00:02:35.75\00:02:37.52 a very challenging time... it was Vietnam war time... 00:02:37.55\00:02:40.99 and so, it was a time when really 00:02:41.02\00:02:43.46 I was the first in my family to go to College 00:02:43.49\00:02:46.43 of the kids... and so, it was really a difficult time 00:02:46.46\00:02:50.00 Yeah, and being the first... there's a lot of pressure 00:02:50.03\00:02:53.57 involved in that... isn't there? 00:02:53.60\00:02:55.30 Like being the first... a lot of expectations... 00:02:55.34\00:02:58.51 Yeah... it really is... because I'm the first grandchild 00:02:58.57\00:03:01.44 on my maternal side... 00:03:01.48\00:03:02.94 and so, as I'm the oldest child 00:03:03.01\00:03:05.01 of my parents... and so, it was instilled in me 00:03:05.05\00:03:09.05 to set an example 00:03:09.08\00:03:11.02 for those who come behind... 00:03:11.05\00:03:12.79 You know, it's so funny Keith because for me too... 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.66 growing up... I'm the oldest grandchild 00:03:15.72\00:03:19.09 and my grandmother... just instilled in me 00:03:19.13\00:03:21.76 from childhood... "get an education... 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.40 get an education... because 00:03:24.47\00:03:25.83 one day you might have to take care of your family... 00:03:25.90\00:03:28.97 you don't know... so get that education... " 00:03:29.00\00:03:30.64 so it was never... "if I go to college" 00:03:30.67\00:03:33.27 it was always... "when" so the expectation is there 00:03:33.31\00:03:36.78 and so... did you grow up in a 00:03:36.81\00:03:38.41 a two-parent household? 00:03:38.45\00:03:39.98 I did... I absolutely did... 00:03:40.02\00:03:43.65 you said something that's so key... 00:03:43.69\00:03:45.15 it's the expectations that were set so in my family... 00:03:45.19\00:03:48.29 it was understood... "you're going to college... 00:03:48.36\00:03:50.86 we don't know where... but you're going to college" 00:03:50.89\00:03:53.50 it was understood that you would get good grades 00:03:53.53\00:03:56.03 my parents were very active, particularly my mother... 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.57 in PTA Meetings and Open Houses. I went to Cleveland Public 00:03:58.60\00:04:03.24 Schools and she was there... actively involved... 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.14 You know what Keith... that is such an important point 00:04:06.17\00:04:10.38 because one of the things that I see... 00:04:10.41\00:04:12.75 that's happened... there's been a decline... 00:04:12.81\00:04:16.28 in the focus... the emphasis on education... 00:04:16.35\00:04:19.82 number one... and number two... 00:04:19.85\00:04:22.86 there's been this decline in parental involvement... 00:04:22.89\00:04:27.50 your mother was at the meetings, 00:04:27.56\00:04:29.63 your mother would talk to the teachers... 00:04:29.66\00:04:31.50 parents must be involved in their children's academic lives 00:04:31.53\00:04:37.47 because you can't just say, 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.17 "Well, that's for the School to do... 00:04:39.21\00:04:41.21 and I'm just going to... do what I do at home... " 00:04:41.24\00:04:44.28 you have to be involved... and so, what I'm hearing... 00:04:44.31\00:04:47.32 is that... your mom... 00:04:47.35\00:04:48.72 was very involved in your academic life... 00:04:48.75\00:04:52.29 which I think... sets a child up for success. 00:04:52.32\00:04:56.36 It really does... on so many levels... 00:04:56.39\00:04:58.89 first of all... it lets the school administration know 00:04:58.93\00:05:01.70 that you have people and parents 00:05:01.73\00:05:03.30 who care about your education, that's the first thing... 00:05:03.33\00:05:05.97 the second thing is... 00:05:06.00\00:05:07.67 as a student... it kept me on my toes... 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.77 you know, I speak to a lot of Administrators and Organizations 00:05:09.80\00:05:13.17 and it's sad to say that PTA Meetings 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.68 now go vastly unattended... 00:05:15.71\00:05:17.08 there are more parents in line to shop on Black Friday 00:05:17.11\00:05:20.22 the day after Thanksgiving... than attend the PTA Meeting 00:05:20.25\00:05:23.18 and so, we have to get more actively engaged 00:05:23.22\00:05:26.35 and really understand that it's education... 00:05:26.39\00:05:29.39 my grandmother is 99 years old 00:05:29.42\00:05:31.39 and she says, "Education is something that 00:05:31.43\00:05:33.60 once you have it they can't take it from you" 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.46 Absolutely... 00:05:35.50\00:05:36.83 it is something that you carry with you... 00:05:36.87\00:05:41.50 it's a way of life... it's a way of thinking... 00:05:41.54\00:05:45.14 it opens up worlds to you... 00:05:45.17\00:05:46.78 that would not, perhaps, have been opened up, had you not 00:05:46.84\00:05:49.61 and it doesn't even necessarily mean... just formal education... 00:05:49.64\00:05:53.58 but I'm talking about literacy as well... 00:05:53.62\00:05:56.22 and I don't want to get too far of... off focus... but 00:05:56.25\00:06:00.29 one of the things that I noticed too... 00:06:00.32\00:06:02.62 is that our kids are not reading... 00:06:02.66\00:06:04.93 they don't know how to read... 00:06:04.96\00:06:06.39 85 percent of American kids cannot read at grade level... 00:06:06.43\00:06:11.37 so, we really are... 00:06:11.40\00:06:13.94 we're not doing some of the things that I read about in 00:06:13.97\00:06:18.51 "Good Is Not Enough" 00:06:18.54\00:06:21.04 which is... personal responsibility 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.81 "Are we living up to our best... 00:06:23.85\00:06:26.55 are we doing our best?" 00:06:26.58\00:06:27.98 so, literacy and learning to read 00:06:28.02\00:06:32.02 is so critical... and that's something that 00:06:32.05\00:06:34.89 even if you don't have money you can go to the library... 00:06:34.92\00:06:37.29 take your child to the library and get a free book 00:06:37.33\00:06:39.89 and read to your child... 00:06:39.93\00:06:41.23 there's no excuse... Absolutely... 00:06:41.26\00:06:43.03 there's no excuse... so, with you... 00:06:43.06\00:06:45.07 as you were growing up... 00:06:45.10\00:06:46.60 your grandmother... emphasized... 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.84 and your mother emphasized education 00:06:48.87\00:06:51.01 you had a two-parent household so your dad was there... 00:06:51.04\00:06:55.21 what impact did having your father in the home have on you? 00:06:55.24\00:06:59.38 It was huge for me... because he was my role model 00:06:59.45\00:07:03.05 what manhood was... 00:07:03.08\00:07:04.49 one of the things that really, to this day, 00:07:04.52\00:07:07.19 brings tears to my eyes... is this... 00:07:07.22\00:07:08.72 I saw this man actually graduate from college in 1964... 00:07:08.76\00:07:13.53 after going 10 years at Night School 00:07:13.56\00:07:15.50 and working in the Steel Mills by day... 00:07:15.53\00:07:17.47 Wow! Imagine what that did for me 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.64 and what that instilled in me... watching him... 00:07:20.67\00:07:22.70 you know, work in the Steel Mills by day 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.74 and go to School at night... 00:07:24.77\00:07:26.11 that was emphatical... 00:07:26.14\00:07:27.71 he taught me how to be a gentleman 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.98 he taught me how to treat my mother and sisters, 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.75 so he was my role model... and so, again, you know, 00:07:32.81\00:07:35.52 he is one of the people that gave a sense of achievement 00:07:35.55\00:07:38.62 but was really the foundation for me... 00:07:38.65\00:07:40.62 he let me understand who I was, and set the expectations... 00:07:40.66\00:07:44.53 And look what he taught you... he taught you to persevere... 00:07:44.59\00:07:49.20 in spite of all the odds... in spite of every obstacle... 00:07:49.23\00:07:53.40 "if you hang in there... you can reach your goal... " 00:07:53.44\00:07:57.51 and so, this had to be impactful on you because 00:07:57.54\00:08:01.18 you saw it really happened... 00:08:01.21\00:08:03.51 it wasn't just something he told you... 00:08:03.55\00:08:05.01 it was something he lived... Yes... absolutely... 00:08:05.05\00:08:08.18 So, you went through College, you did all that... 00:08:08.22\00:08:11.29 how did you enter Corporate life? 00:08:11.32\00:08:13.59 Literally, I graduated one week and two weeks later 00:08:13.62\00:08:18.63 I started working in Corporate America 00:08:18.69\00:08:20.30 as a Sales Person for the Bell System... 00:08:20.33\00:08:21.76 now, I'm old enough to remember Ma Bell when it was a monopoly 00:08:21.83\00:08:25.13 and if you wanted a phone, you had to go to Ma Bell... 00:08:25.17\00:08:27.80 if you wanted long-distance... you had to go there... 00:08:27.84\00:08:30.44 and so, it was an interesting time because it was a monopoly 00:08:30.47\00:08:34.14 but it was a time when we started seeing 00:08:34.18\00:08:36.44 the robustness of technology... 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.08 so it was really a great time to enter the workforce... for me 00:08:38.11\00:08:40.68 And what did you find out in terms of being a minority 00:08:40.72\00:08:46.42 especially... growing up during that time... 00:08:46.45\00:08:50.06 and in Corporate America... 00:08:50.09\00:08:51.86 what kinds of experiences 00:08:51.89\00:08:54.36 did you have in Corporate America at that time? 00:08:54.36\00:08:56.83 Yeah, I had some very interesting... 00:08:56.87\00:08:59.10 my first day on the job I was in the men's rest room 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.54 and a large white male co-worker stood next to me 00:09:02.57\00:09:05.84 and said, "You know, you got a job 00:09:05.87\00:09:08.18 that a white man should have" first day on the job... 00:09:08.21\00:09:11.68 a few months later... I was the sales person 00:09:11.71\00:09:14.42 I was selling phone systems to an automobile dealership 00:09:14.45\00:09:17.19 and I was the lead person and the gentleman said, 00:09:17.22\00:09:20.72 "I don't do business with people like you... 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.79 so if you'll need to have someone come out... " 00:09:22.82\00:09:24.86 Well, I said, "I'll get my boss she'll come out" 00:09:24.89\00:09:27.40 he said, "Did you say 'she'" 00:09:27.46\00:09:28.76 he says, "I don't do business with women either... I'm going to get it done... 00:19:47.15\00:19:49.08 but I'm going to break a lot of glass in the process... " 00:19:49.12\00:19:51.25 and what I learned is... 00:19:51.29\00:19:53.29 people tolerated that when you were at the entry level 00:19:53.32\00:19:57.09 but at some point... you got to mature 00:19:57.13\00:19:58.73 to understand... 00:19:58.76\00:20:00.10 you have to have the interpersonal skills 00:20:00.13\00:20:01.70 to get along with everyone... 00:20:01.86\00:20:03.20 particularly if you're going to be a leader 00:20:03.23\00:20:05.40 and particularly if you're not comfortable 00:20:05.43\00:20:07.57 with certain environments, you've got to be comfortable. 00:20:07.60\00:20:11.61 Yes, yes, what role did mentors play in your journey? 00:20:11.64\00:20:15.64 It was huge because I've been very self aware 00:20:15.68\00:20:20.22 my whole life... and my thing is 00:20:20.28\00:20:21.95 "I know my strengths... but I have these lesser strengths" 00:20:21.98\00:20:25.82 I don't call them weaknesses... 00:20:25.85\00:20:27.19 that I need people to help supplement... 00:20:27.22\00:20:28.82 and so, what I have found... and this was amazing... 00:20:28.86\00:20:32.29 that when I put myself in a position to be humble... 00:20:32.33\00:20:35.30 to ask for help... 00:20:35.33\00:20:36.67 there were people there to give it... 00:20:36.70\00:20:38.50 Now, surprisingly, and maybe somewhat disappointingly 00:20:38.53\00:20:42.07 most of my mentors did not look like me, Yvonne, 00:20:42.10\00:20:44.17 they were not Black men, 00:20:44.21\00:20:46.34 they were not African American typically 00:20:46.37\00:20:48.58 they were all... the whole colors of the rainbow 00:20:48.61\00:20:51.55 but the fact of the matter is, 00:20:51.58\00:20:52.91 is that, when you show initiative... 00:20:52.95\00:20:54.28 when you show that you want to learn 00:20:54.32\00:20:56.69 and that you're receptive to learning and to feedback... 00:20:56.72\00:20:59.19 people will come in... to help you. 00:20:59.22\00:21:01.52 And that's something, that, I think we need to embrace 00:21:01.56\00:21:06.39 that there are people of every culture that want to help, 00:21:06.43\00:21:09.70 that want to see you successful, that are there... 00:21:09.73\00:21:13.13 to kind of help you along in your journey, so... 00:21:13.17\00:21:16.54 I think that's awesome... 00:21:16.57\00:21:17.97 you have a philosophy... P E P what is that? 00:21:18.01\00:21:21.98 P E P... it's a philosophy that basically talks about 00:21:22.01\00:21:26.05 "Performance, Exposure and Perception" 00:21:26.08\00:21:28.25 and in a nutshell... what it is... is that 00:21:28.28\00:21:30.39 most of us think that success in the business world 00:21:30.45\00:21:33.02 in our organizations 00:21:33.05\00:21:34.39 is strictly based on how well we perform... 00:21:34.42\00:21:36.89 how well we do the job... 00:21:36.93\00:21:38.26 and make no mistake... 00:21:38.29\00:21:39.63 that is critical... that's number one... 00:21:39.66\00:21:41.63 I'd say that's 50 percent of the equation... 00:21:41.66\00:21:43.73 the other 50 percent 00:21:43.77\00:21:45.47 is made up of what I call 25 percent exposure... 00:21:45.50\00:21:48.77 "who do you know... 00:21:48.80\00:21:50.17 what do you know... and who knows you... " 00:21:50.21\00:21:52.77 and then perception... "what is your brand... 00:21:52.81\00:21:55.34 what are you known for... " 00:21:55.38\00:21:57.48 and where a lot of us fail is 00:21:57.51\00:21:59.51 that we manage performance quite well... 00:21:59.55\00:22:01.65 but we don't do the other two... 00:22:01.68\00:22:03.65 and what I tell people all the time is... 00:22:03.69\00:22:05.29 "Performance may be the key, but it's exposure and perception 00:22:05.32\00:22:09.62 that unlock the door to your future... " 00:22:09.66\00:22:11.43 So, how can you... 00:22:11.46\00:22:13.46 and I think that's great... great information... 00:22:13.50\00:22:15.56 how can you increase exposure, you're in the Corporate World... 00:22:15.60\00:22:21.50 and... how do you then... increase your exposure 00:22:21.54\00:22:25.94 within that context? 00:22:25.97\00:22:27.31 Yeah... that's a great question 00:22:27.34\00:22:29.11 and the number one thing I tell people to do 00:22:29.14\00:22:32.01 is to use "Thought Leadership" 00:22:32.05\00:22:33.68 find ways to bring creativity, 00:22:33.72\00:22:35.95 innovation and thought leadership to bear... 00:22:36.02\00:22:38.19 so, for example, most companies will have 00:22:38.22\00:22:40.39 Company Town Hall Meetings or Company meetings 00:22:40.42\00:22:42.92 where the Leaders will speak 00:22:42.99\00:22:44.33 and then there is a Q and A session, right? 00:22:44.36\00:22:46.19 Well, no one wants to be the first one 00:22:46.23\00:22:47.86 to raise their hand and ask a question... 00:22:47.86\00:22:49.50 well, that's an exposure opportunity 00:22:49.53\00:22:51.60 and so what I teach the folks that I mentor is... 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.54 "You go prepared to every business meeting 00:22:53.57\00:22:55.94 with two business-related, thought-provoking questions 00:22:55.97\00:22:59.11 to ask during Q and A... 00:22:59.14\00:23:00.68 because no one's going to raise their hand first... 00:23:00.74\00:23:02.74 and you'll get to ask that... and you'll demonstrate 00:23:02.78\00:23:04.58 'Thought Leadership' that's the first thing... " 00:23:04.61\00:23:06.35 the second thing is...
