Are you a minority professional who feels as though 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.90 your company has some unwritten rules? 00:00:03.94\00:00:06.58 How can you position yourself for success? 00:00:06.61\00:00:09.15 Well, stay tuned to hear all about it... 00:00:09.18\00:00:11.69 My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:11.72\00:00:13.17 and you're watching Urban Report... 00:00:13.20\00:00:15.07 Hello and welcome to Urban Report... 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.11 My guest today is Keith Wyche Speaker and Author of 00:00:41.14\00:00:45.73 "Good Is Not Enough" 00:00:45.76\00:00:47.05 Welcome to Urban Report Keith... 00:00:47.08\00:00:49.18 Thank you so much for having me... 00:00:49.21\00:00:51.25 Oh, man, Keith, you have such great information 00:00:51.28\00:00:55.01 in your book, "Good Is Not Enough" 00:00:55.04\00:00:57.93 What was the motivation for writing that book? 00:00:57.97\00:01:01.01 You know, the motivation really stemmed from the fact that 00:01:01.05\00:01:04.75 when I was in Corporate America initially 00:01:04.78\00:01:06.73 in the early 1980s... there were not a lot of people 00:01:06.76\00:01:09.51 who looked like me in leadership positions 00:01:09.55\00:01:12.16 and the few that were there kind of had a 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.36 "Crab in the Barrel" mentality that said, 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.53 "Hey, I got mine, you get yours" 00:01:16.56\00:01:18.43 and so I promised myself, if I ever got to any level of 00:01:18.47\00:01:22.93 significance, so to speak, in Corporate America 00:01:22.97\00:01:25.12 I would document and codify those lessons 00:01:25.16\00:01:27.46 and the mistakes that I've learned and others 00:01:27.50\00:01:30.14 to share with that next generation of leadership 00:01:30.18\00:01:32.35 because I think, 00:01:32.39\00:01:33.60 "True leaders make sure that they create future leaders. " 00:01:33.63\00:01:36.37 Absolutely, it is so important that we're all in here together 00:01:36.41\00:01:42.69 so we need to help each other out... 00:01:42.73\00:01:44.46 we need to identify the different aspects of the journey 00:01:44.49\00:01:49.53 that we need to share and pass on... 00:01:49.56\00:01:52.02 so that others can kind of take advantage 00:01:52.05\00:01:54.72 of the benefits that we were blessed with... 00:01:54.75\00:01:57.52 Absolutely... it is particularly important 00:01:57.56\00:02:00.23 for women and people of color 00:02:00.27\00:02:02.82 who have not typically had role models of people 00:02:02.86\00:02:05.54 maybe... in their families 00:02:05.57\00:02:06.64 to pass these lessons down and so 00:02:06.67\00:02:08.60 if you didn't grow up in a family 00:02:08.64\00:02:10.42 with a Corporate Executive or a Leader... 00:02:10.45\00:02:12.49 you may not be aware of some of these unwritten rules. 00:02:12.52\00:02:15.48 Yes, yes... let's go back and kind of look at your journey 00:02:15.51\00:02:18.59 because I think you've had a really interesting life too... 00:02:18.63\00:02:21.68 Where did you grow up? 00:02:21.72\00:02:23.01 I grew up in the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio... 00:02:23.05\00:02:26.32 a child of the 60s... 00:02:26.36\00:02:27.82 so, I grew up through the Civil Rights era... 00:02:27.86\00:02:30.87 I don't just remember Selma from the movie... 00:02:30.91\00:02:33.89 I actually remember living through it... 00:02:33.92\00:02:35.77 and so it was a very difficult time, 00:02:35.80\00:02:37.58 a very challenging time... it was Vietnam war time... 00:02:37.62\00:02:41.06 and so, it was a time when really 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.51 I was the first in my family to go to College 00:02:43.54\00:02:46.49 of the kids... and so, it was really a difficult time 00:02:46.53\00:02:50.08 Yeah, and being the first... there's a lot of pressure 00:02:50.12\00:02:53.64 involved in that... isn't there? 00:02:53.68\00:02:55.38 Like being the first... a lot of expectations... 00:02:55.41\00:02:58.61 Yeah... it really is... because I'm the first grandchild 00:02:58.65\00:03:01.48 on my maternal side... 00:03:01.51\00:03:02.98 and so, as I'm the oldest child 00:03:03.02\00:03:05.03 of my parents... and so, it was instilled in me 00:03:05.06\00:03:09.06 to set an example 00:03:09.10\00:03:11.04 for those who come behind... 00:03:11.07\00:03:12.82 You know, it's so funny Keith because for me too... 00:03:12.85\00:03:15.69 growing up... I'm the oldest grandchild 00:03:15.73\00:03:19.11 and my grandmother... just instilled in me 00:03:19.14\00:03:21.81 from childhood... "get an education... 00:03:21.84\00:03:24.47 get an education... because 00:03:24.51\00:03:25.90 one day you might have to take care of your family... 00:03:25.94\00:03:29.02 you don't know... so get that education... " 00:03:29.05\00:03:30.68 so it was never... "if I go to college" 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.34 it was always... "when" so the expectation is there 00:03:33.37\00:03:36.83 and so... did you grow up in a 00:03:36.86\00:03:38.46 a two-parent household? 00:03:38.50\00:03:40.02 I did... I absolutely did... 00:03:40.05\00:03:43.70 you said something that's so key... 00:03:43.74\00:03:45.20 it's the expectations that were set so in my family... 00:03:45.24\00:03:48.36 it was understood... "you're going to college... 00:03:48.40\00:03:50.90 we don't know where... but you're going to college" 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.54 it was understood that you would get good grades 00:03:53.57\00:03:56.11 my parents were very active, particularly my mother... 00:03:56.14\00:03:58.67 in PTA Meetings and Open Houses. I went to Cleveland Public 00:03:58.70\00:04:03.25 Schools and she was there... actively involved... 00:04:03.29\00:04:06.17 You know what Keith... that is such an important point 00:04:06.20\00:04:10.40 because one of the things that I see... 00:04:10.43\00:04:12.78 that's happened... there's been a decline... 00:04:12.82\00:04:16.32 in the focus... the emphasis on education... 00:04:16.36\00:04:19.83 number one... and number two... 00:04:19.86\00:04:22.87 there's been this decline in parental involvement... 00:04:22.90\00:04:27.56 your mother was at the meetings, 00:04:27.59\00:04:29.69 your mother would talk to the teachers... 00:04:29.72\00:04:31.56 parents must be involved in their children's academic lives 00:04:31.59\00:04:37.53 because you can't just say, 00:04:37.57\00:04:39.22 "Well, that's for the School to do... 00:04:39.26\00:04:41.26 and I'm just going to... do what I do at home... " 00:04:41.29\00:04:44.33 you have to be involved... and so, what I'm hearing... 00:04:44.37\00:04:47.38 is that... your mom... 00:04:47.41\00:04:48.77 was very involved in your academic life... 00:04:48.81\00:04:52.35 which I think... sets a child up for success. 00:04:52.39\00:04:56.42 It really does... on so many levels... 00:04:56.45\00:04:58.95 first of all... it lets the school administration know 00:04:58.98\00:05:01.73 that you have people and parents 00:05:01.76\00:05:03.32 who care about your education, that's the first thing... 00:05:03.36\00:05:05.99 the second thing is... 00:05:06.03\00:05:07.68 as a student... it kept me on my toes... 00:05:07.72\00:05:09.79 you know, I speak to a lot of Administrators and Organizations 00:05:09.82\00:05:13.19 and it's sad to say that PTA Meetings 00:05:13.23\00:05:15.71 now go vastly unattended... 00:05:15.74\00:05:17.10 there are more parents in line to shop on Black Friday 00:05:17.13\00:05:20.23 the day after Thanksgiving... than attend the PTA Meeting 00:05:20.27\00:05:23.20 and so, we have to get more actively engaged 00:05:23.24\00:05:26.37 and really understand that it's education... 00:05:26.40\00:05:29.42 my grandmother is 99 years old 00:05:29.46\00:05:31.41 and she says, "Education is something that 00:05:31.45\00:05:33.60 once you have it they can't take it from you" 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.52 Absolutely... 00:05:35.55\00:05:36.89 it is something that you carry with you... 00:05:36.93\00:05:41.55 it's a way of life... it's a way of thinking... 00:05:41.58\00:05:45.20 it opens up worlds to you... 00:05:45.24\00:05:46.84 that would not, perhaps, have been opened up, had you not 00:05:46.88\00:05:49.67 and it doesn't even necessarily mean... just formal education... 00:05:49.70\00:05:53.64 but I'm talking about literacy as well... 00:05:53.67\00:05:56.28 and I don't want to get too far of... off focus... but 00:05:56.31\00:06:00.27 one of the things that I noticed too... 00:06:00.31\00:06:02.60 is that our kids are not reading... 00:06:02.64\00:06:04.90 they don't know how to read... 00:06:04.93\00:06:06.37 85 percent of American kids cannot read at grade level... 00:06:06.40\00:06:11.39 so, we really are... 00:06:11.43\00:06:13.95 we're not doing some of the things that I read about in 00:06:13.99\00:06:18.52 "Good Is Not Enough" 00:06:18.55\00:06:21.07 which is... personal responsibility 00:06:21.11\00:06:23.84 "Are we living up to our best... 00:06:23.87\00:06:26.57 are we doing our best?" 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.01 so, literacy and learning to read 00:06:28.05\00:06:32.05 is so critical... and that's something that 00:06:32.08\00:06:34.92 even if you don't have money you can go to the library... 00:06:34.96\00:06:37.30 take your child to the library and get a free book 00:06:37.34\00:06:39.91 and read to your child... 00:06:39.94\00:06:41.02 there's no excuse... Absolutely... 00:06:41.05\00:06:43.09 there's no excuse... so, with you... 00:06:43.12\00:06:45.12 as you were growing up... 00:06:45.16\00:06:46.65 your grandmother... emphasized... 00:06:46.69\00:06:48.88 and your mother emphasized education 00:06:48.91\00:06:51.06 you had a two-parent household so your dad was there... 00:06:51.10\00:06:55.27 what impact did having your father in the home have on you? 00:06:55.31\00:06:59.45 It was huge for me... because he was my role model 00:06:59.49\00:07:03.03 what manhood was... 00:07:03.07\00:07:04.48 one of the things that really, to this day, 00:07:04.51\00:07:07.17 brings tears to my eyes... is this... 00:07:07.20\00:07:08.70 I saw this man actually graduate from college in 1964... 00:07:08.74\00:07:13.53 after going 10 years at Night School 00:07:13.56\00:07:15.52 and working in the Steel Mills by day... 00:07:15.55\00:07:17.48 Wow! Imagine what that did for me 00:07:17.51\00:07:20.65 and what that instilled in me... watching him... 00:07:20.68\00:07:22.71 you know, work in the Steel Mills by day 00:07:22.75\00:07:24.75 and go to School at night... 00:07:24.78\00:07:25.92 that was emphatical... 00:07:25.96\00:07:27.73 he taught me how to be a gentleman 00:07:27.77\00:07:29.99 he taught me how to treat my mother and sisters, 00:07:30.03\00:07:32.78 so he was my role model... and so, again, you know, 00:07:32.82\00:07:35.54 he is one of the people that gave a sense of achievement 00:07:35.58\00:07:38.65 but was really the foundation for me... 00:07:38.69\00:07:40.64 he let me understand who I was, and set the expectations... 00:07:40.67\00:07:44.56 And look what he taught you... he taught you to persevere... 00:07:44.60\00:07:49.26 in spite of all the odds... in spite of every obstacle... 00:07:49.29\00:07:53.45 "if you hang in there... you can reach your goal... " 00:07:53.48\00:07:57.56 and so, this had to be impactful on you because 00:07:57.60\00:08:01.16 you saw it really happened... 00:08:01.19\00:08:03.50 it wasn't just something he told you... 00:08:03.54\00:08:05.01 it was something he lived... I was the sales person 00:09:11.69\00:09:14.39 I was selling phone systems to an automobile dealership 00:09:14.43\00:09:17.18 and I was the lead person and the gentleman said, 00:09:17.21\00:09:20.70 "I don't do business with people like you... 00:09:20.73\00:09:22.79 so if you'll need to have someone come out... " 00:09:22.82\00:09:24.84 Well, I said, "I'll get my boss she'll come out" 00:09:24.87\00:09:27.43 he said, "Did you say 'she'" 00:09:27.46\00:09:28.76 he says, "I don't do business with women either... I'm going to get it done... 00:19:47.16\00:19:49.12 but I'm going to break a lot of glass in the process... " 00:19:49.15\00:19:51.29 and what I learned is... 00:19:51.32\00:19:53.32 people tolerated that when you were at the entry level 00:19:53.35\00:19:57.10 but at some point... you got to mature 00:19:57.14\00:19:58.75 to understand... 00:19:58.79\00:19:59.91 you have to have the interpersonal skills 00:19:59.95\00:20:01.76 to get along with everyone... 00:20:01.92\00:20:03.19 particularly if you're going to be a leader 00:20:03.22\00:20:05.44 and particularly if you're not comfortable 00:20:05.47\00:20:07.62 with certain environments, you've got to be comfortable. 00:20:07.65\00:20:11.67 Yes, yes, what role did mentors play in your journey? 00:20:11.71\00:20:15.70 It was huge because I've been very self aware 00:20:15.74\00:20:20.28 my whole life... and my thing is 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.00 "I know my strengths... but I have these lesser strengths" 00:20:22.03\00:20:25.86 I don't call them weaknesses... 00:20:25.90\00:20:26.99 that I need people to help supplement... 00:20:27.02\00:20:28.88 and so, what I have found... and this was amazing... 00:20:28.91\00:20:32.34 that when I put myself in a position to be humble... 00:20:32.37\00:20:35.37 to ask for help... 00:20:35.41\00:20:36.45 there were people there to give it... 00:20:36.48\00:20:38.59 Now, surprisingly, and maybe somewhat disappointingly 00:20:38.62\00:20:42.16 most of my mentors did not look like me, Yvonne, 00:20:42.19\00:20:44.27 they were not Black men, 00:20:44.30\00:20:46.43 they were not African American typically 00:20:46.47\00:20:48.66 they were all... the whole colors of the rainbow 00:20:48.69\00:20:51.63 but the fact of the matter is, 00:20:51.67\00:20:52.70 is that, when you show initiative... 00:20:52.73\00:20:54.22 when you show that you want to learn 00:20:54.25\00:20:56.77 and that you're receptive to learning and to feedback... 00:20:56.81\00:20:59.26 people will come in... to help you. 00:20:59.29\00:21:01.53 And that's something, that, I think we need to embrace 00:21:01.57\00:21:06.42 that there are people of every culture that want to help, 00:21:06.45\00:21:09.75 that want to see you successful, that are there... 00:21:09.78\00:21:13.19 to kind of help you along in your journey, so... 00:21:13.22\00:21:16.59 I think that's awesome... 00:21:16.63\00:21:18.03 you have a philosophy... P E P what is that? 00:21:18.07\00:21:22.02 P E P... it's a philosophy that basically talks about 00:21:22.05\00:21:26.10 "Performance, Exposure and Perception" 00:21:26.14\00:21:28.31 and in a nutshell... what it is... is that 00:21:28.34\00:21:30.45 most of us think that success in the business world 00:21:30.49\00:21:33.08 in our organizations 00:21:33.11\00:21:34.18 is strictly based on how well we perform... 00:21:34.21\00:21:36.94 how well we do the job... 00:21:36.97\00:21:38.31 and make no mistake... 00:21:38.34\00:21:39.58 that is critical... that's number one... 00:21:39.62\00:21:41.71 I'd say that's 50 percent of the equation... 00:21:41.75\00:21:43.81 the other 50 percent 00:21:43.84\00:21:45.54 is made up of what I call 25 percent exposure... 00:21:45.58\00:21:48.86 "who do you know... 00:21:48.89\00:21:50.25 what do you know... and who knows you... " 00:21:50.28\00:21:52.86 and then perception... "what is your brand... 00:21:52.89\00:21:55.43 what are you known for... " 00:21:55.47\00:21:57.56 and where a lot of us fail is 00:21:57.59\00:21:59.61 that we manage performance quite well... 00:21:59.65\00:22:01.66 but we don't do the other two... 00:22:01.69\00:22:03.67 and what I tell people all the time is... 00:22:03.71\00:22:05.30 "Performance may be the key, but it's exposure and perception 00:22:05.34\00:22:09.65 that unlock the door to your future... " 00:22:09.69\00:22:11.44 So, how can you... 00:22:11.48\00:22:13.49 and I think that's great... great information... 00:22:13.52\00:22:15.61 how can you increase exposure, you're in the Corporate World... 00:22:15.65\00:22:21.56 and... how do you then... increase your exposure 00:22:21.60\00:22:26.00 within that context? 00:22:26.04\00:22:27.27 Yeah... that's a great question 00:22:27.31\00:22:29.16 and the number one thing I tell people to do 00:22:29.19\00:22:32.07 is to use "Thought Leadership" 00:22:32.11\00:22:33.72 find ways to bring creativity, 00:22:33.76\00:22:36.02 innovation and thought leadership to bear... 00:22:36.06\00:22:38.25 so, for example, most companies will have 00:22:38.28\00:22:40.44 Company Town Hall Meetings or Company meetings 00:22:40.48\00:22:42.99 where the Leaders will speak 00:22:43.03\00:22:44.32 and then there is a Q and A session, right? 00:22:44.36\00:22:46.24 Well, no one wants to be the first one 00:22:46.28\00:22:47.92 to raise their hand and ask a question... 00:22:47.96\00:22:49.58 well, that's an exposure opportunity 00:22:49.62\00:22:51.70 and so what I teach the folks that I mentor is... 00:22:51.74\00:22:53.62 "You go prepared to every business meeting 00:22:53.66\00:22:56.03 with two business-related, thought-provoking questions 00:22:56.06\00:22:59.18 to ask during Q and A... 00:22:59.21\00:23:00.71 because no one's going to raise their hand first... 00:23:00.75\00:23:02.77 and you'll get to ask that... and you'll demonstrate 00:23:02.81\00:23:04.59 'Thought Leadership' that's the first thing... " 00:23:04.62\00:23:06.37 the second thing is...
