Stay tuned to meet a man 00:00:01.33\00:00:02.66 who, though raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:00:02.70\00:00:05.10 found himself living as a mid-level drug dealer... 00:00:05.17\00:00:07.87 My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:07.90\00:00:09.37 and you're watching Urban Report... 00:00:09.40\00:00:11.34 Hello and welcome to Urban Report... 00:00:33.36\00:00:35.83 My guest today is Greg Emelander, 00:00:35.86\00:00:38.13 President of Conviction Ministries Inc. 00:00:38.17\00:00:40.67 Welcome to Urban Report Greg... Thank you... 00:00:40.70\00:00:43.34 It is so good to have you here. It's good to be here... 00:00:43.37\00:00:46.81 I've heard that you have an amazing testimony... 00:00:46.84\00:00:50.55 and I just met you today... and from what I've heard... 00:00:50.58\00:00:54.18 your story is something that our Viewers really need to hear. 00:00:54.22\00:00:58.62 So, tell me a little bit about your background... 00:00:58.65\00:01:00.99 Where were you born and raised? 00:01:01.02\00:01:02.59 I was born in lonia, Michigan... that's where we were raised... 00:01:02.62\00:01:06.90 and my father was a farmer 00:01:06.93\00:01:08.23 my mom worked in a local doctor's office... 00:01:08.26\00:01:09.90 and for most of my childhood, it was spent in the country... 00:01:09.93\00:01:13.40 I attended a Seventh-day Adventist School 00:01:13.44\00:01:15.47 all the way from first through eighth grade... 00:01:15.50\00:01:17.44 and by all accounts... I had a really good childhood... 00:01:17.47\00:01:20.68 So, you came from a two-parent family... 00:01:20.74\00:01:23.31 and... was your dad very active in the home 00:01:23.35\00:01:26.58 was he a strong presence in your home? 00:01:26.61\00:01:29.02 He was... of course being a farmer 00:01:29.05\00:01:31.35 there were long hours during the summer 00:01:31.39\00:01:33.19 but during the winter... he was home... 00:01:33.22\00:01:34.92 quite a bit... and he was a good, Christian man 00:01:34.99\00:01:39.26 he was always solid in terms of 00:01:39.29\00:01:42.63 making sure that we understood our faith... 00:01:42.66\00:01:45.50 that we read our Bible... so as I was raised... 00:01:45.53\00:01:48.34 we definitely had a strong Christian presence in the home. 00:01:48.37\00:01:51.91 So, when did it start to change for you... 00:01:51.94\00:01:55.44 because you went from 1st through the 8th grade 00:01:55.48\00:01:58.25 in a Seventh-day Adventist School... 00:01:58.28\00:02:00.85 were you spiritual during that time... 00:02:00.88\00:02:03.32 or did you begin to change during that time... 00:02:03.35\00:02:06.02 Towards the end of 7th through 8th grade... 00:02:06.05\00:02:08.69 I began to change... 00:02:08.72\00:02:10.06 of course my home began to change as well... 00:02:10.09\00:02:12.83 my parents began fighting and in time... 00:02:12.86\00:02:15.53 their fighting, of course, affected my brother... 00:02:15.56\00:02:18.93 my sister and I... and our ability to communicate 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.34 without fighting... diminished... 00:02:22.37\00:02:24.61 and so, that's kind of what happened towards 7th and 8th 00:02:24.64\00:02:28.38 so the family began to kind of disintegrate 00:02:28.41\00:02:31.21 Hmmm... hmmm... and with that 00:02:31.25\00:02:33.25 came a change in you... 00:02:33.28\00:02:35.65 so how did it manifest itself, what happened? 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.55 The biggest change came when my parents announced 00:02:38.62\00:02:41.06 that they were going to get divorced... 00:02:41.09\00:02:42.89 once they divorced... they separated... 00:02:42.96\00:02:44.73 and we children kind of felt drawn to one parent 00:02:44.76\00:02:50.30 or the other... Hmmm... 00:02:50.33\00:02:51.67 it wasn't that we became "pawns" 00:02:51.70\00:02:53.57 but we felt that tension between the two... 00:02:53.60\00:02:55.67 like we had to be loyal to one 00:02:55.70\00:02:57.37 and kind of push away the other 00:02:57.41\00:02:58.74 You had to pick one... Yes, absolutely... 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.18 Hmmm... hmmm... and when you're around 00:03:00.21\00:03:01.54 that individual... even though they didn't say that 00:03:01.58\00:03:03.48 that's kind of how we felt... and there was a lot of strain 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.28 between our siblings... because of that... 00:03:07.32\00:03:09.62 let's say my sister wanted to be with my mom... 00:03:09.65\00:03:12.09 I didn't want my dad to be alone... 00:03:12.12\00:03:13.69 so I wanted to be with my dad... 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.26 but at the same time I wanted to be with my mom... 00:03:15.29\00:03:17.29 and that type of tension between the siblings 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.89 really created a bad atmosphere 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.60 You know... it's amazing Greg, 00:03:21.63\00:03:23.60 the impact that divorce has on the children... 00:03:23.63\00:03:27.64 it doesn't matter what age... they can be adult children 00:03:27.67\00:03:30.71 of the couple... but divorce has a profound impact 00:03:30.74\00:03:35.74 so, your sister wanted to go with your mom 00:03:35.78\00:03:38.68 you wanted to go with your dad, Hmmm... hmmm... 00:03:38.71\00:03:41.25 what happened... how did it end up? 00:03:41.28\00:03:43.32 Ultimately, that's exactly what happened... 00:03:43.35\00:03:45.49 I stayed with my mom for a short while 00:03:45.52\00:03:47.62 but I became increasingly angry... 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.69 I wanted to rebel... I wasn't getting the attention 00:03:49.72\00:03:54.40 that I felt I deserved and, of course, I started acting out 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.83 and ultimately that led to some disciplinary issues 00:03:56.87\00:03:59.73 I stole from a store and got busted stealing... 00:03:59.77\00:04:02.20 and so, that was the first time I had interaction 00:04:02.24\00:04:04.54 with the police... but along with that rebellious 00:04:04.57\00:04:06.88 attitude came smoking cigarettes... 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.78 because that was one thing I knew I wasn't allowed to do... 00:04:08.84\00:04:11.28 but yet... I did... and at the end of 8th grade, 00:04:11.31\00:04:14.45 they transferred us to a public school... 00:04:14.48\00:04:16.62 so, I went from a Seventh-day Adventist School... 00:04:16.65\00:04:18.79 to a public school... and I was completely unprepared. 00:04:18.82\00:04:21.39 That is a huge transition isn't it? 00:04:21.42\00:04:24.49 I had that happen to me... and you go from a small... 00:04:24.53\00:04:28.10 kind of intimate setting... with the Adventist School 00:04:28.13\00:04:31.70 sometimes to a really big public school... 00:04:31.73\00:04:33.97 and it's... the classes are different, 00:04:34.00\00:04:35.84 the people are different, 00:04:35.87\00:04:37.21 so how did going to a public school, impact you spiritually? 00:04:37.24\00:04:40.88 Well, it impacted me to such a degree that 00:04:40.91\00:04:45.81 the spirituality was just completely in the background... 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.95 everything that I used to be... a Pathfinder... 00:04:47.98\00:04:49.98 I mean, I was a dedicated child of God... 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.52 but as soon as the divorce happened... 00:04:52.55\00:04:55.02 all of that disappeared... even though my dad was taking 00:04:55.06\00:04:57.39 us to Church on the weekends that he had us... 00:04:57.46\00:04:59.96 because we had to switch back and forth... 00:05:00.06\00:05:02.13 it was something I wasn't even thinking about 00:05:02.16\00:05:04.17 so, by the time I'm in School... I'm not thinking about the Bible 00:05:04.20\00:05:07.44 I'm not thinking about Christ, 00:05:07.47\00:05:08.80 I'm not thinking about God at all... 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.17 I'm thinking about "How can I develop friendships 00:05:10.21\00:05:13.48 to where I don't feel rejected, 00:05:13.51\00:05:15.14 or I don't feel I'm not part of the group... " 00:05:15.18\00:05:18.31 and that desire to want to be accepted... 00:05:18.35\00:05:21.12 ultimately led me down a very dark path... 00:05:21.15\00:05:23.89 So, 7th and 8th grades... 00:05:23.92\00:05:27.02 those were the pivotal years for you... 00:05:27.06\00:05:29.39 that's when things just kind of shifted into this real 00:05:29.42\00:05:33.66 "drift away" from the Lord and from the values 00:05:33.70\00:05:36.83 that you had... when you went to high school, 00:05:36.87\00:05:39.97 did you develop the wrong... 00:05:40.00\00:05:41.64 did you take on the wrong friends... the wrong associates 00:05:41.67\00:05:45.01 tell us about your associates in high school... 00:05:45.04\00:05:47.54 I was not athletic... I was, kind of a small guy, 00:05:47.58\00:05:49.91 I wasn't short... but I was definitely skinny... 00:05:49.94\00:05:52.21 so athleticism was not in my gene pool... 00:05:52.25\00:05:54.72 necessarily... not within me individually... 00:05:54.75\00:05:57.15 and I didn't necessarily like the negative attention 00:05:57.19\00:06:01.16 that the academics got... 00:06:01.19\00:06:02.96 so I was ultimately drawn to the troublemakers... 00:06:02.99\00:06:06.59 and, of course, with troublemakers comes trouble... 00:06:06.63\00:06:10.20 and... so I began having problems with my teachers 00:06:10.27\00:06:13.57 with my parents... 00:06:13.60\00:06:14.94 with individuals just in the community 00:06:14.97\00:06:16.67 and inside... internally... all of the little choices 00:06:16.71\00:06:20.41 that I was making... to rebel... 00:06:20.44\00:06:21.78 every decision that I made that was kind of... 00:06:21.81\00:06:24.85 "going against authority" built upon itself... 00:06:24.88\00:06:28.02 and what I was doing became progressively worse 00:06:28.05\00:06:31.19 and worse and worse and worse, and so I went from stealing... 00:06:31.25\00:06:34.16 and smoking cigarettes to smoking Marijuana, 00:06:34.19\00:06:37.43 and then, my criminal activity 00:06:37.46\00:06:40.86 as far as how I was acting out became more aggressive... 00:06:40.90\00:06:44.70 Tell us about that... 00:06:44.73\00:06:46.10 so, for instance, I remember one night... 00:06:46.17\00:06:48.00 we had gotten into an argument with an individual 00:06:48.07\00:06:51.11 who had already graduated high school, 00:06:51.14\00:06:52.74 and he was a "bad kid" in town 00:06:52.77\00:06:54.71 and I got the bright idea 00:06:54.74\00:06:56.58 that we were going to get him back one night... 00:06:56.61\00:06:57.98 so, I had a truck... we filled it with cinder blocks 00:06:58.01\00:07:00.12 and we got him to chase us 00:07:00.15\00:07:01.92 through town in the middle of the night... 00:07:01.95\00:07:03.28 and I had a friend in the back of the truck... 00:07:03.32\00:07:04.65 and he would pop up... and I remember, he was throwing 00:07:04.69\00:07:07.06 cinder blocks at this car while we were doing high speeds 00:07:07.09\00:07:09.76 down the middle of the town... now, I was 16 at that time 00:07:09.79\00:07:12.43 and we didn't care whether or not somebody got hurt 00:07:12.46\00:07:15.06 or whether or not somebody even got killed... 00:07:15.10\00:07:16.50 we just didn't care... but that was... one small step 00:07:16.53\00:07:20.77 that led ultimately towards that larger journey 00:07:20.80\00:07:23.71 Isn't it interesting, Greg, how... you know... 00:07:23.74\00:07:26.57 you make decisions and choices that really don't reflect 00:07:26.61\00:07:30.45 the intelligence that you have, I mean, you don't think, 00:07:30.48\00:07:34.32 from cause to effect... Hmmm... 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.05 you're just thinking this is what... 00:07:36.08\00:07:37.95 you're kind of ruled by your impulses, 00:07:37.99\00:07:40.06 Absolutely... 00:07:40.09\00:07:41.42 "This is what I feel like doing, so this is what I'm going to do" 00:07:41.46\00:07:43.89 and I mean, that's why smoking weed... 00:07:43.93\00:07:47.30 it's one of the reasons... smoking weed... with teenagers 00:07:47.30\00:07:51.07 is so bad... because the frontal lobe 00:07:51.10\00:07:54.24 is not as developed as it should be... 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.04 and so they're smoking weed and then making 00:07:57.07\00:07:59.74 choices that can just impact them for the rest of their lives 00:07:59.77\00:08:02.54 without realizing it... so, these are some of the things 00:08:02.58\00:08:05.48 that you were doing... you had started smoking weed 00:08:05.51\00:08:07.58 you had started to get more and more aggressive 00:08:07.62\00:08:09.42 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:09.48\00:08:10.82 how did that play out when you were maybe 18 or 19? 00:08:10.85\00:08:14.29 Well, I had a pretty bad habit as far as Marijuana went... 00:08:14.36\00:08:19.83 but I didn't want to have to pay for my habit 00:08:19.86\00:08:21.90 and so I started selling in order to cover that 00:08:21.93\00:08:23.97 And how old were you during this time? 00:08:24.00\00:08:25.60 I started selling when I was 17 Okay... 00:08:25.63\00:08:27.67 but by 18 or 19... it was pretty well established 00:08:27.70\00:08:30.37 I had a certain amount of clientele 00:08:30.41\00:08:33.38 but I could tell that... I really loved the money... 00:08:33.41\00:08:37.71 I really loved the attention that I was getting from 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.72 living in that type of lifestyle and ultimately 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.28 I ended up meeting an individual who became a connection for me, 00:08:43.32\00:08:46.96 he was very well connected with an Organization 00:08:46.99\00:08:49.39 a criminal organization that was trafficking 00:08:49.42\00:08:51.76 large quantities of Marijuana from Mexico through Texas 00:08:51.79\00:08:55.63 and I mean, semi-trailers full of weed... 00:08:55.66\00:08:58.73 and he became my solid connection 00:08:58.77\00:09:01.27 and ultimately I... through him... 00:09:01.30\00:09:03.67 I started selling 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 00:09:03.71\00:09:06.34 40-pound blocks of Marijuana 00:09:06.37\00:09:07.71 Oh, so, you went from not really making much money 00:09:07.74\00:09:13.21 because you were a farmer's son all right... 00:09:13.25\00:09:14.58 Hmmm... hmmm... so you weren't really making 00:09:14.62\00:09:15.95 much when you were doing work... 00:09:15.98\00:09:18.15 to now... you're making big money 00:09:18.19\00:09:20.42 and you're getting attached to the money... 00:09:20.46\00:09:23.39 Oh absolutely... Right... and the lifestyle... 00:09:23.43\00:09:26.33 and everything that goes with it... 00:09:26.36\00:09:28.46 so, where did that take you, what happened after that? 00:09:28.50\00:09:32.77 Of course, with drugs come... drug use... 00:09:32.80\00:09:34.94 Hmmm... and I didn't keep the 00:09:34.97\00:09:36.91 "cardinal rule" of the drug dealer 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.37 and I started using my own supply... 00:09:38.44\00:09:39.81 eventually that led to a really bad Cocaine addiction 00:09:39.87\00:09:43.18 because Marijuana just wasn't enough for me, 00:09:43.21\00:09:44.98 I got sick of having to deal with larger quantities of 00:09:45.01\00:09:47.38 Marijuana and switched to Cocaine... 00:09:47.42\00:09:48.78 and selling Cocaine, of course, I'm using Cocaine 00:09:48.82\00:09:52.22 and that addiction just got insatiable... 00:09:52.25\00:09:54.92 we were trafficking in Ecstasy and Shrooms 00:09:54.99\00:09:57.66 and pharmaceuticals... and so my selection of material 00:09:57.69\00:10:02.16 that I was selling... it was large... 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.13 they ended up calling me the "Street Pharmacist" 00:10:04.20\00:10:05.80 because I carried so many of varieties of 00:10:05.83\00:10:07.84 everything you could think of... 00:10:07.87\00:10:09.20 On your person... 00:10:09.24\00:10:10.57 On my person... so, for instance if you 00:10:10.61\00:10:11.94 see me today... generally, I have a backpack... 00:10:11.97\00:10:13.98 well, back in the day... I had a backpack too... 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.11 today my Bible is in there... with my highlighting kit 00:10:16.14\00:10:19.58 and everything else... but back then... 00:10:19.61\00:10:21.22 I would have 2 or 3 different grades of Marijuana, 00:10:21.25\00:10:23.69 2 different types of Shrooms, 2 different kinds of Cocaine... 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.89 and I'd have pharmaceuticals through the roof 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.12 and so, they called me "The Street Pharmacist" 00:10:29.16\00:10:31.26 because I carried a veritable pharmacy... on my back... 00:10:31.29\00:10:33.86 Wow! and see, honestly, you don't look like you 00:10:33.90\00:10:37.00 had a bunch of drugs on you, I don't know how you looked then 00:10:37.03\00:10:40.14 now, of course, you have the love of the Lord 00:10:40.17\00:10:42.84 and it's in your face... Yes... 00:10:42.87\00:10:44.54 and your countenance, but then... 00:10:44.57\00:10:46.17 I don't know if you looked like a hippie 00:10:46.21\00:10:47.88 or you if you looked like you were using drugs yourself... 00:10:47.91\00:10:49.84 but, to me... it's amazing how Satan just starts you 00:10:49.88\00:10:55.12 at one place... you weren't doing drugs at all 00:10:55.15\00:10:58.65 at one point... once you started... 00:10:58.69\00:11:01.26 that was the gateway... 00:11:01.29\00:11:02.82 and Marijuana just led you to do Cocaine... 00:11:02.86\00:11:05.06 which led you to do the other things... 00:11:05.09\00:11:07.23 and you just spiraled downward... 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.16 so, you began selling and using and walking around 00:11:09.20\00:11:15.00 with the drugs on your person... Oh, I did... definitely... 00:11:15.04\00:11:18.94 and nobody advised you not to do that? 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.34 I didn't care... I got to the point where 00:11:21.38\00:11:23.71 the people who used to be my dealers 00:11:23.75\00:11:25.95 then became my customers... 00:11:25.98\00:11:27.32 and so, I became one of the top dogs in the area... 00:11:27.35\00:11:29.72 and even the Chief of Police in my town 00:11:29.75\00:11:31.52 would tell you that for 3 and 1/2 years 00:11:31.55\00:11:33.32 they focused on trying to bust me 00:11:33.36\00:11:35.22 that I was their main focus for such a long time 00:11:35.26\00:11:38.36 that when I finally got arrested it was like 00:11:38.39\00:11:40.90 they really didn't understand how to go about 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.30 doing the police work that they were doing 00:11:43.33\00:11:45.03 before they were focusing on me... 00:11:45.07\00:11:46.47 So you were so much the focal point of their attention... 00:11:46.50\00:11:51.67 and their activities... that once they had you... 00:11:51.71\00:11:53.98 they didn't really know what to do... 00:11:54.01\00:11:55.78 Yes... They didn't have much more to do 00:11:55.84\00:11:57.38 How did you avoid 00:11:57.41\00:12:00.92 avoid getting locked up for those 3 years, what did you do? 00:12:00.98\00:12:05.32 Well, I didn't have a criminal record to speak of 00:12:05.35\00:12:07.92 when I finally got arrested... 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.29 the DEA's Central Michigan Enforcement Team... 00:12:09.32\00:12:11.66 West Michigan Enforcement Team, State Police and the 00:12:11.69\00:12:13.60 County's Police Department, Kent County Sheriff's Department 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.46 they all busted me at once... 00:12:15.53\00:12:16.87 and I was charged with three counts of delivering 00:12:16.90\00:12:19.27 and manufacturing Cocaine less than 50 grams... 00:12:19.30\00:12:21.84 but because of my lack of criminal record 00:12:21.87\00:12:24.27 and because of my health problems at that time... 00:12:24.31\00:12:26.41 and because of other factors, 00:12:26.44\00:12:28.71 they just gave me a slap on the wrist 00:12:28.74\00:12:30.11 and that "slap on the wrist" was 97 days in jail... 00:12:30.15\00:12:32.58 felony probation... life-time felony probation 00:12:32.61\00:12:36.05 which was, I believe, 2 years, 8,000 dollars in fines, 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.05 honestly... they were giving me enough rope to hang myself 00:12:39.09\00:12:42.02 because they knew that I wasn't going to stop 00:12:42.06\00:12:44.19 but with the charges that I received... 00:12:44.23\00:12:46.59 the maximum sentence they could have given me 00:12:46.63\00:12:47.96 was 40 years so by giving me a rope, 00:12:47.96\00:12:49.83 they knew that the next time I got in trouble, 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.77 they'd be able to throw the book at me... 00:12:51.83\00:12:53.74 And there was a next time... 00:12:53.77\00:12:56.20 There absolutely was... Tell us about that... 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.97 So, I quit selling drugs... after I got busted in 2003... 00:12:58.01\00:13:01.98 but I never quit doing drugs... now, I quit using Marijuana 00:13:02.04\00:13:05.81 and Cocaine... but I was still an addict... 00:13:05.85\00:13:08.48 and I still wanted to get high 00:13:08.52\00:13:09.85 so, what I did was... I went to the doctor's office 00:13:09.88\00:13:11.39 I started getting prescriptions 00:13:11.42\00:13:12.75 and ultimately went through a Pain Clinic 00:13:12.79\00:13:14.79 and they prescribed me Morphine, and Avinza 00:13:14.82\00:13:16.89 which is 24-hours- sustained-release-morphine 00:13:16.96\00:13:18.79 and Fentanyl patches... 00:13:18.83\00:13:20.16 and so, I was getting all these prescriptions at once... 00:13:20.20\00:13:22.70 and so the Fentanyl patches, I started shooting up 00:13:22.73\00:13:25.70 and I'd mix that with Crack Cocaine... 00:13:25.77\00:13:27.37 so, breakfast for me... after a period of two years 00:13:27.40\00:13:30.77 was honestly a syringe for Fentanyl with Crack Cocaine 00:13:30.81\00:13:34.18 and I'd have a 3-day patch in each shot... 00:13:34.21\00:13:37.41 so, now, Fentanyl being 80 times more powerful than Morphine... 00:13:37.45\00:13:41.78 you can imagine just how high my tolerance was, 00:13:41.82\00:13:44.72 the doctors, ultimately, cut me off of my prescriptions 00:13:44.75\00:13:47.79 and that's what led me to doing what I ended up doing... 00:13:47.82\00:13:50.86 Which... we're going to come to in a second... 00:13:50.89\00:13:54.03 So, Greg, this is mind-boggling to me because 00:13:54.10\00:13:57.17 I always think about... 00:13:57.20\00:13:58.63 about God's plan and Satan's plan 00:13:58.67\00:14:02.04 and when you look and you see 00:14:02.07\00:14:05.27 how God's plan is to prosper you 00:14:05.31\00:14:07.44 and to give you an abundant life 00:14:07.48\00:14:09.54 and Satan's plan is to destroy you... 00:14:09.58\00:14:11.71 and when you're on Satan's path, and on that trajectory... 00:14:11.78\00:14:17.69 you don't really see or care about what's going on... 00:14:17.75\00:14:21.52 Is that where you were? did you care about your body 00:14:21.56\00:14:24.99 did you care about what this was doing to you... 00:14:25.03\00:14:28.40 morally or physically or spiritually... 00:14:28.43\00:14:31.07 Not at all... What were you thinking? 00:14:31.10\00:14:33.50 I had no concern for my well-being, as a matter of fact 00:14:33.54\00:14:35.47 when I was 19, my lung collapsed 00:14:35.50\00:14:37.24 the surgeon essentially told me when I was healed... 00:14:37.27\00:14:40.11 that one more time... if it collapsed another time 00:14:40.14\00:14:42.84 he would be able to fix it, the third time... I'd be done 00:14:42.88\00:14:44.78 and so, at the age of 19... 00:14:44.85\00:14:46.51 it was essentially a death sentence... in my mind 00:14:46.55\00:14:49.45 and so, I lived as recklessly as you could... 00:14:49.48\00:14:52.32 I had no concern about my life, 00:14:52.35\00:14:54.62 and honestly... I had no concern for anybody else's... 00:14:54.66\00:14:56.56 I was so hot-headed that if somebody... 00:14:56.59\00:14:58.59 I remember one time somebody told me 00:14:58.63\00:15:00.63 to turn the radio down... and the next thing... 00:15:00.66\00:15:02.23 they knew he had a bullet coming at him 00:15:02.26\00:15:03.60 and that was me... because I just didn't care anymore 00:15:03.63\00:15:06.30 and so, as far as shooting up or doing something to my body, 00:15:06.33\00:15:09.84 it didn't matter... 00:15:09.87\00:15:11.71 My! so what happened to you... 00:15:11.74\00:15:14.38 what was the thing that really happened that got your attention 00:15:14.44\00:15:18.31 Well, when the doctor's office cut me off... 00:15:18.35\00:15:20.35 I started breaking into houses in order to feed my habit... 00:15:20.38\00:15:23.55 which ultimately led the police officers to chase me down 00:15:23.59\00:15:26.25 and the day they arrested me, I had a gun in the car, 00:15:26.29\00:15:29.02 and I went to grab that gun to shoot that officer, 00:15:29.06\00:15:31.73 and a passenger who was in my car... 00:15:31.79\00:15:33.43 grabbed that gun before I could get it 00:15:33.50\00:15:35.06 and restricted me from getting to it... 00:15:35.13\00:15:37.03 and then the cops pulled me out of the car and I was arrested 00:15:37.07\00:15:39.60 that was God's version of saving my life... right there... 00:15:39.63\00:15:42.14 and so, I went through the Court process 00:15:42.17\00:15:44.91 which was... five months, then went to prison 00:15:44.94\00:15:46.81 ultimately, I was sentenced to 7 to 20 years 00:15:46.84\00:15:48.48 in the Michigan Department of Corrections... 00:15:48.51\00:15:50.11 and when I got to prison, 00:15:50.15\00:15:51.85 God started showing me all the times that He had saved my life, 00:15:51.88\00:15:54.85 all the times He had stepped in, in the face of my rebellion, 00:15:54.88\00:15:57.79 in the face of my stupidity... 00:15:57.82\00:15:59.15 you know, you never see it when you're living in it... 00:15:59.19\00:16:01.49 Right... right... because as you said... 00:16:01.52\00:16:02.86 the devil tends to bind you, 00:16:02.89\00:16:04.96 you're not focused on God or spiritual things, 00:16:04.99\00:16:07.66 but God showed me all the times He'd saved my life 00:16:07.66\00:16:10.33 the drug overdoses, the armed robberies... 00:16:10.37\00:16:12.40 all the stupid things that I did... 00:16:12.43\00:16:14.07 and that He just stepped in and said, "You know what... 00:16:14.10\00:16:15.84 I'm going to cover you in mercy right now, 00:16:15.87\00:16:17.94 because I know where you can be 10 years from now," so... 00:16:17.97\00:16:20.64 when I saw God's love, honestly I was so taken aback 00:16:20.68\00:16:25.91 by the fact that even in that rebellion... 00:16:25.95\00:16:27.62 He cared enough to save my life, 00:16:27.65\00:16:29.12 that really brought me back to who I used to be as a child 00:16:29.15\00:16:33.22 and I started asking myself, 00:16:33.25\00:16:34.59 "Why did I end up here... who am I, really who am I? 00:16:34.62\00:16:37.79 because now, all the drugs are gone... 00:16:37.83\00:16:39.33 all the "numbing" is gone that I had been trying to do 00:16:39.39\00:16:43.03 to stop myself from really processing 00:16:43.06\00:16:45.23 all the bad choices that I made, all those are gone... 00:16:45.27\00:16:48.50 and now I'm faced with reality, and it was hard... 00:16:48.54\00:16:51.74 but I could feel God's love there, 00:16:51.77\00:16:53.74 and I could feel Him really guiding me... 00:16:53.78\00:16:55.61 and so I got on my knees one night... 00:16:55.68\00:16:57.45 and I just started asking for forgiveness for every sin 00:16:57.51\00:17:00.32 that I could think of... I ended up in tears that night, 00:17:00.35\00:17:03.05 and obviously sobbing on my bunk... 00:17:03.08\00:17:05.25 and I crawl back under that bunk and as I rolled under that bunk, 00:17:05.29\00:17:08.02 I've told people that... I felt as if the weight of sin 00:17:08.06\00:17:11.43 was coming off my body... 00:17:11.46\00:17:12.79 like 8 inches of concrete was rising up off of my body... 00:17:12.83\00:17:16.30 and it was incredible because I knew at that point 00:17:16.33\00:17:19.73 that I had... honestly been forgiven 00:17:19.77\00:17:21.17 and I know... God doesn't do that for everybody 00:17:21.20\00:17:23.54 but I needed it right then... I had to have it... 00:17:23.57\00:17:25.67 because I was at such a point of hopelessness 00:17:25.71\00:17:27.71 because I had broken into my 00:17:27.74\00:17:29.08 parents' house to feed my addiction... 00:17:29.11\00:17:30.45 I had broken into my dad's house to steal that pistol 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.78 I was going to shoot that cop with... 00:17:32.81\00:17:34.15 I was on my way to go rob a pharmacy by the way... 00:17:34.18\00:17:36.35 but I could feel God's love 00:17:36.38\00:17:39.29 and I knew that I had been forgiven... 00:17:39.32\00:17:40.96 and I knew at that point in my life... even though I didn't 00:17:40.99\00:17:43.19 have a clue of what it was going to look like... 00:17:43.22\00:17:44.56 I knew my life was going to be different 00:17:44.59\00:17:46.06 and I knew that 00:17:46.09\00:17:47.40 even though I had 7 years of prison to do 00:17:47.46\00:17:49.23 that somehow it was going to be used to glorify God... 00:17:49.30\00:17:51.77 See... oh it is so juicy... because, what you just showed us 00:17:51.80\00:17:58.24 really... is that you had a physiological 00:17:58.27\00:18:02.28 response... to God's forgiveness 00:18:02.31\00:18:05.11 you felt that peace that comes over you... 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.65 when you feel forgiven by God... 00:18:07.68\00:18:09.32 it doesn't matter what you've done... 00:18:09.35\00:18:11.29 Viewers, it doesn't matter what you've done... 00:18:11.32\00:18:14.52 God will forgive you... 00:18:14.56\00:18:16.96 Greg, I want you to look into your camera there... 00:18:16.99\00:18:19.76 and I want you to tell a young man 00:18:19.79\00:18:21.90 who is right now in the throes of sin... 00:18:21.93\00:18:25.03 and where you were... drug dealing, robbing... 00:18:25.07\00:18:28.14 all that stuff... and tell him... what to do... 00:18:28.17\00:18:31.74 how he can break free... 00:18:31.77\00:18:34.04 of that feeling of just... imprisonment... 00:18:34.08\00:18:36.75 "One thing that I understood that really 00:18:36.78\00:18:39.71 God brought to my heart was that... 00:18:39.75\00:18:42.58 'your past does not have to dictate your future' 00:18:42.62\00:18:45.12 what you've done in the past is irrelevant... 00:18:45.15\00:18:47.62 God loves you nonetheless, 00:18:47.66\00:18:48.99 and He's willing to take you off from that... 00:18:49.02\00:18:51.09 and really... the only thing that binds you 00:18:51.13\00:18:53.33 is your choice, whether to accept the love 00:18:53.40\00:18:55.50 and the mercy and forgiveness that God has... 00:18:55.53\00:18:57.63 if you're willing to accept that He's willing to give it to you, 00:18:57.67\00:19:00.14 and I promise you whatever sins you've committed 00:19:00.17\00:19:02.64 He's wanting to forgive you, 00:19:02.70\00:19:04.04 and whatever binds you at this time... 00:19:04.07\00:19:05.91 he's willing to break from around you... 00:19:05.94\00:19:07.71 and He can lead you in that path of peace... He will... 00:19:07.78\00:19:11.11 I promise... that's one thing He's promised us 00:19:11.15\00:19:13.01 that's what salvation is about... " 00:19:13.05\00:19:15.25 Thank you... that is so true and people need to hear it 00:19:15.28\00:19:19.92 and then he can hear it from someone... 00:19:19.95\00:19:21.62 who's been there... 00:19:21.66\00:19:22.99 who's been doing the same things they're doing... 00:19:23.02\00:19:25.19 it's not like somebody like me 00:19:25.23\00:19:27.23 that doesn't know firsthand about it... 00:19:27.30\00:19:29.60 if you know firsthand about it, and you've experienced 00:19:29.63\00:19:32.13 going through the lawlessness, 00:19:32.20\00:19:34.47 and then you experience God's peace... 00:19:34.50\00:19:37.67 we're all sinners... 00:19:37.71\00:19:39.27 we're all sinners and in need of a Savior... 00:19:39.34\00:19:41.54 and we just have different paths that we go down 00:19:41.58\00:19:44.45 but we're all sinners, and we just praise God 00:19:44.48\00:19:47.35 that He delivers us... Amen... 00:19:47.38\00:19:49.55 because He will put us back on solid ground... 00:19:49.58\00:19:52.05 so, I need to ask you this because I didn't ask before... 00:19:52.09\00:19:56.22 when you decided that you were coming back 00:19:56.29\00:19:59.19 to the Lord... did you have someone 00:19:59.26\00:20:01.63 in prison that was saying, 00:20:01.66\00:20:03.06 "Hey, you need to kind of look at yourself... " 00:20:03.10\00:20:05.13 or was it the Holy Spirit directly... talking to you? 00:20:05.20\00:20:08.37 It was the Holy Spirit... when I went to prison, 00:20:08.40\00:20:11.34 I started looking at who was around me... 00:20:11.37\00:20:13.14 Hmmm... and by looking at those 00:20:13.21\00:20:14.74 around me... at first you want to sit there 00:20:14.78\00:20:16.81 and point fingers kind of like the Pharisee and 00:20:16.85\00:20:18.85 the Publican and the sinners 00:20:18.88\00:20:20.22 in the Synagogue... and as I'm looking at these 00:20:20.25\00:20:22.72 individuals... and I'm pointing fingers 00:20:22.75\00:20:24.75 in my mind... I realize I'm in the same place they are, 00:20:24.79\00:20:27.72 so in Society's eyes... I'm no different than they are 00:20:27.76\00:20:30.66 Hmmm... hmmm... so, I've got a serial killer 00:20:30.69\00:20:32.39 on one side or a serial rapist on one side 00:20:32.43\00:20:34.00 I've got an axe murderer on the other, 00:20:34.00\00:20:35.40 and in Society's eyes... 00:20:35.43\00:20:37.00 I am no different... 00:20:37.03\00:20:38.37 so who am I to judge them, 00:20:38.40\00:20:39.73 and so that's what really got me to thinking 00:20:39.77\00:20:42.34 about the fact that, "Hey, I had every opportunity 00:20:42.37\00:20:44.87 in the world... I've the whole future 00:20:44.91\00:20:47.61 is laid out in front of me... there are no obstacles... 00:20:47.68\00:20:50.28 except my own choices... " and when I realized that 00:20:50.31\00:20:53.72 it was on me... that those were my choices 00:20:53.75\00:20:55.78 that I made that led me to where I was at, 00:20:55.82\00:20:57.75 well, that opened up a whole different situation... 00:20:57.79\00:21:01.26 So, how long... after you had this realization 00:21:01.32\00:21:05.66 and this epiphany and this experience with God... 00:21:05.69\00:21:10.30 how long after that... did you get out of prison? 00:21:10.33\00:21:14.10 seven years... it was actually six and a half 00:21:14.14\00:21:17.84 Okay... so, I'd already done five months in the Country jail 00:21:17.87\00:21:21.18 when I finally got sentenced 00:21:21.21\00:21:22.58 and went to Michigan Department of Corrections... 00:21:22.61\00:21:24.28 so, I'd been in the Michigan Department of Corrections 00:21:24.31\00:21:26.48 formally for only 16 days... but I had five months previous 00:21:26.55\00:21:30.05 to that... to really start weighing 00:21:30.09\00:21:31.82 what had happened... 00:21:31.85\00:21:33.19 so I went through 7 years of prison... in all... 00:21:33.22\00:21:36.56 7 years of incarceration 00:21:36.59\00:21:37.93 and in that time... God gave me opportunities 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.46 left and right to practice my faith... 00:21:40.50\00:21:42.40 one... to get grounded... my dad sent me a 00:21:42.43\00:21:44.30 "Conflict of Ages" series and I went through that 00:21:44.33\00:21:46.47 and then the Bible studies from Amazing Facts... 00:21:46.53\00:21:49.00 and my dad had given me one of the biggest gifts... 00:21:49.04\00:21:51.51 it was the Bible... and that Bible... 00:21:51.54\00:21:53.24 I began studying... and I really started just 00:21:53.27\00:21:56.44 allowing that to become a big part of my life... 00:21:56.48\00:21:59.61 you know... getting back into the Word 00:21:59.65\00:22:01.48 and understanding those promises that were in there... 00:22:01.52\00:22:03.62 understanding what it meant to be a child of God... 00:22:03.69\00:22:05.72 to have that position in Christ understanding what freedom 00:22:05.75\00:22:09.62 what salvation was all about, it was huge for me 00:22:09.66\00:22:11.59 because then... it allowed me to realize 00:22:11.63\00:22:13.36 that I already had victory over all these things 00:22:13.40\00:22:15.33 that the devil was trying to tell me... 00:22:15.36\00:22:16.70 which he had me bound by... 00:22:16.73\00:22:18.07 and by understanding that freedom, 00:22:18.10\00:22:20.30 I was able to share that with others... 00:22:20.34\00:22:22.20 so no matter what prison I went to... 00:22:22.27\00:22:24.11 I had Bible Study Groups 00:22:24.14\00:22:25.47 whether I'd be studying with officers 00:22:25.51\00:22:26.84 or whether it was prisoners, sometimes in the visiting room 00:22:26.88\00:22:29.21 I had the Bible Study with my then-fiancée... 00:22:29.24\00:22:31.88 and you'd see people across from me listening 00:22:31.91\00:22:34.78 to the conversation and then once they were gone... 00:22:34.82\00:22:36.82 the officers would start asking questions 00:22:36.85\00:22:38.49 about what we were talking about in our Bible Study 00:22:38.52\00:22:40.82 and I could just see God working 00:22:40.86\00:22:42.19 Yes, how awesome is that! 00:22:42.22\00:22:43.86 It doesn't matter where we are... 00:22:43.89\00:22:45.83 Right... wherever we are... 00:22:45.86\00:22:47.66 we can let our light shine, and once you have that spirit 00:22:47.66\00:22:51.40 of God in you... you can't... 00:22:51.43\00:22:53.47 it's like fire shut up in your bones... right? 00:22:53.50\00:22:55.54 That's right... you have to talk about it... 00:22:55.57\00:22:57.57 so look at what God did 00:22:57.61\00:22:59.11 even where you were at that time... 00:22:59.14\00:23:01.38 you were then, now bringing other people to Him 00:23:01.41\00:23:04.71 and allowing God to use you 00:23:04.75\00:23:07.12 so that they could experience His peace as well... 00:23:07.15\00:23:09.95 That's right... and it didn't stop 00:23:09.98\00:23:11.69 once I got out of prison... 00:23:11.72\00:23:13.05 I formed "Conviction Ministries Incorporated" 00:23:13.09\00:23:15.36 That was going to be my 00:23:15.39\00:23:16.73 next question... tell us about that... 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.09 So, Conviction Ministries Incorporated is kind of the 00:23:18.13\00:23:20.40 outgrowth of the burden that God put on my heart... 00:23:20.43\00:23:22.86 in prison I had real difficulty finding quality material 00:23:22.90\00:23:27.04 once you are in prison, you are pretty much cut off 00:23:27.07\00:23:29.40 from Society... everybody you knew in Church 00:23:29.47\00:23:31.74 pretty much wants to push you away... 00:23:31.77\00:23:33.44 but Hebrews 13 says... 00:23:33.48\00:23:34.88 to remember those that are in prison 00:23:34.91\00:23:36.31 as though you are in prison with them... 00:23:36.34\00:23:37.71 as though you are chained with them... 00:23:37.75\00:23:39.08 and when I got out... I realized just because I was 00:23:39.11\00:23:41.72 out of prison didn't mean that I didn't have a duty 00:23:41.75\00:23:44.29 to those individuals that I left behind... 00:23:44.32\00:23:45.85 so, I started raising money to send 00:23:45.92\00:23:48.19 quality Study Bibles back in... 00:23:48.22\00:23:50.46 because I realized we can send tons of books 00:23:50.49\00:23:52.39 into prisons... but what they really need 00:23:52.46\00:23:54.73 is number one... a Bible... 00:23:54.83\00:23:56.13 and number 2, the Study Guides that have to go with the Bibles 00:23:56.16\00:23:59.20 because if I send a Bible into prison... 00:23:59.27\00:24:00.94 there are going to be a hundred people there 00:24:00.97\00:24:02.54 to misinterpret that Bible... 00:24:02.60\00:24:04.14 but, if I send a Bible in there and in that Bible 00:24:04.17\00:24:07.34 is cross reference and has all of our material... in that Bible 00:24:07.38\00:24:11.21 it becomes much harder for somebody to come along 00:24:11.25\00:24:14.38 and tell the recipient of that Bible 00:24:14.42\00:24:16.69 error... and so they don't accept it... 00:24:16.75\00:24:18.95 so Conviction Ministries was formed to raise money 00:24:18.99\00:24:21.92 to purchase our... Seventh-day Adventist material 00:24:21.99\00:24:24.89 our Study Bibles... and to send them back in... 00:24:24.93\00:24:26.83 That's tremendous... 00:24:26.86\00:24:29.03 and how old is Convictions Ministries? 00:24:29.06\00:24:30.90 I had to start it when I got off parole... 00:24:30.93\00:24:32.67 because they said... it was about a "conflict of interest" 00:24:32.70\00:24:34.90 so, I formally started it in 2012... 00:24:34.94\00:24:37.81 and between 2013 and 2014... so far, we have sent in 00:24:37.84\00:24:43.04 over 14,000 dollars in Bibles... 00:24:43.08\00:24:46.21 now, I'm working with Remnant Publications right now 00:24:46.25\00:24:49.28 to come out with an Outreach edition of our Bible 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.22 so, it will have all the Remnant Study Guides 00:24:52.25\00:24:55.09 in the back... all the study material 00:24:55.12\00:24:56.49 that comes in the Remnant Study Bible 00:24:56.52\00:24:57.86 will be in the back... the only thing it won't have 00:24:57.89\00:25:00.53 is the Spirit of Prophecy quotes in the front... 00:25:00.56\00:25:02.56 Tell us what's in there... 00:25:02.60\00:25:03.93 So, in the Bible that we'll have, 00:25:03.97\00:25:05.90 it will have the parables of Christ 00:25:05.93\00:25:07.87 it will have the sanctuary... 00:25:07.90\00:25:09.37 all the furniture of the sanctuary broken down 00:25:09.40\00:25:11.24 because what a lot of people don't understand is... 00:25:11.27\00:25:13.17 the sanctuary message 00:25:13.21\00:25:14.64 is actually the key to understanding salvation 00:25:14.68\00:25:17.11 if you understand what 00:25:17.15\00:25:18.48 each of those pieces of furniture mean, 00:25:18.51\00:25:20.15 you will understand a facet of salvation... 00:25:20.22\00:25:21.92 Hmmm... hmmm... and so, the Remnant Study Bible 00:25:21.98\00:25:23.92 breaks that down... it also has one of the largest 00:25:23.95\00:25:26.09 concordances that you can find in any Bible... 00:25:26.12\00:25:28.22 it's a 3-column, 180-page concordance... 00:25:28.26\00:25:30.69 on top of that, it covers the miracles, 00:25:30.73\00:25:32.96 it covers the parables, 00:25:32.99\00:25:34.30 has sections from Christ's Object Lessons 00:25:34.36\00:25:36.46 and it goes through all of our doctrines 00:25:36.50\00:25:38.87 as a 26-topic chain reference, 00:25:38.90\00:25:41.14 so that it takes you not only through the 00:25:41.17\00:25:43.30 fundamentals of our doctrines, 00:25:43.34\00:25:44.74 but it goes through some of the finer facets 00:25:44.77\00:25:47.14 of our doctrines that kind of off-shoot subjects 00:25:47.21\00:25:49.54 that most Study Bibles and 00:25:49.58\00:25:51.58 definitely no other Adventist Bible covers 00:25:51.61\00:25:53.45 and so, I want to be able to provide that message for anybody 00:25:53.48\00:25:57.32 in prison who wants to understand the truth... 00:25:57.35\00:26:00.56 and by offering a Bible at an inexpensive rate... 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.69 we'll be able to reach a lot of individuals 00:26:03.73\00:26:05.69 that we never would have been able to touch... 00:26:05.73\00:26:07.50 That is wonderful... now suppose some people want to 00:26:07.50\00:26:10.50 donate Bibles to prisoners to inmates in various Facilities 00:26:10.53\00:26:15.30 how can they get in touch with you 00:26:15.34\00:26:16.81 you have your website... we'll put your website 00:26:16.84\00:26:18.81 up on the screen...
