Stay tuned to meet a man 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.39 who, though raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:00:02.42\00:00:05.17 found himself living as a mid-level drug dealer... 00:00:05.21\00:00:07.93 My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:07.96\00:00:09.41 and you're watching Urban Report... 00:00:09.45\00:00:11.39 Hello and welcome to Urban Report... 00:00:33.42\00:00:35.91 My guest today is Greg Emelander, 00:00:35.94\00:00:38.21 President of Conviction Ministries Inc. 00:00:38.25\00:00:40.74 Welcome to Urban Report Greg... Thank you... 00:00:40.78\00:00:43.44 It is so good to have you here. It's good to be here... 00:00:43.47\00:00:46.91 I've heard that you have an amazing testimony... 00:00:46.94\00:00:50.62 and I just met you today... and from what I've heard... 00:00:50.65\00:00:54.26 your story is something that our Viewers really need to hear. 00:00:54.30\00:00:58.70 So, tell me a little bit about your background... 00:00:58.73\00:01:01.00 Where were you born and raised? 00:01:01.04\00:01:02.62 I was born in lonia, Michigan... that's where we were raised... 00:01:02.66\00:01:06.92 and my father was a farmer 00:01:06.96\00:01:07.99 my mom worked in a local doctor's office... 00:01:08.02\00:01:09.95 and for most of my childhood, it was spent in the country... 00:01:09.99\00:01:13.44 I attended a Seventh-day Adventist School 00:01:13.47\00:01:15.52 all the way from first through eighth grade... 00:01:15.55\00:01:17.50 and by all accounts... I had a really good childhood... 00:01:17.54\00:01:20.74 So, you came from a two-parent family... 00:01:20.78\00:01:23.38 and... was your dad very active in the home 00:01:23.41\00:01:26.64 was he a strong presence in your home? 00:01:26.67\00:01:29.06 He was... of course being a farmer 00:01:29.09\00:01:31.41 there were long hours during the summer 00:01:31.44\00:01:33.23 but during the winter... he was home... 00:01:33.27\00:01:34.99 quite a bit... and he was a good, Christian man 00:01:35.03\00:01:39.32 he was always solid in terms of 00:01:39.35\00:01:42.72 making sure that we understood our faith... 00:01:42.76\00:01:45.58 that we read our Bible... so as I was raised... 00:01:45.62\00:01:48.41 we definitely had a strong Christian presence in the home. 00:01:48.45\00:01:52.00 So, when did it start to change for you... 00:01:52.03\00:01:55.53 because you went from 1st through the 8th grade 00:01:55.56\00:01:58.32 in a Seventh-day Adventist School... 00:01:58.36\00:02:00.87 were you spiritual during that time... 00:02:00.91\00:02:03.33 or did you begin to change during that time... 00:02:03.37\00:02:06.04 Towards the end of 7th through 8th grade... 00:02:06.07\00:02:08.71 I began to change... 00:02:08.74\00:02:10.06 of course my home began to change as well... 00:02:10.09\00:02:12.86 my parents began fighting and in time... 00:02:12.89\00:02:15.59 their fighting, of course, affected my brother... 00:02:15.62\00:02:19.00 my sister and I... and our ability to communicate 00:02:19.04\00:02:22.38 without fighting... diminished... 00:02:22.41\00:02:24.66 and so, that's kind of what happened towards 7th and 8th 00:02:24.69\00:02:28.44 so the family began to kind of disintegrate 00:02:28.48\00:02:31.27 Hmmm... hmmm... and with that 00:02:31.31\00:02:33.29 came a change in you... 00:02:33.32\00:02:35.69 so how did it manifest itself, what happened? 00:02:35.73\00:02:38.62 The biggest change came when my parents announced 00:02:38.66\00:02:41.10 that they were going to get divorced... 00:02:41.14\00:02:42.96 once they divorced... they separated... 00:02:43.00\00:02:44.79 and we children kind of felt drawn to one parent 00:02:44.82\00:02:50.40 or the other... Hmmm... 00:02:50.43\00:02:51.56 it wasn't that we became "pawns" 00:02:51.60\00:02:53.66 but we felt that tension between the two... 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.75 like we had to be loyal to one 00:02:55.79\00:02:57.46 and kind of push away the other 00:02:57.49\00:02:58.67 You had to pick one... Yes, absolutely... 00:02:58.70\00:03:00.01 Hmmm... hmmm... and when you're around 00:03:00.05\00:03:01.29 that individual... even though they didn't say that 00:03:01.33\00:03:03.51 that's kind of how we felt... and there was a lot of strain 00:03:03.54\00:03:07.29 between our siblings... because of that... 00:03:07.32\00:03:09.63 let's say my sister wanted to be with my mom... 00:03:09.67\00:03:12.10 I didn't want my dad to be alone... 00:03:12.14\00:03:13.72 so I wanted to be with my dad... 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.27 but at the same time I wanted to be with my mom... 00:03:15.31\00:03:17.30 and that type of tension between the siblings 00:03:17.34\00:03:19.91 really created a bad atmosphere 00:03:19.94\00:03:21.65 You know... it's amazing Greg, 00:03:21.69\00:03:23.66 the impact that divorce has on the children... 00:03:23.70\00:03:27.68 it doesn't matter what age... they can be adult children 00:03:27.72\00:03:30.76 of the couple... but divorce has a profound impact 00:03:30.80\00:03:35.80 so, your sister wanted to go with your mom 00:03:35.84\00:03:38.72 you wanted to go with your dad, Hmmm... hmmm... 00:03:38.76\00:03:41.31 what happened... how did it end up? 00:03:41.35\00:03:43.37 Ultimately, that's exactly what happened... 00:03:43.41\00:03:45.53 I stayed with my mom for a short while 00:03:45.56\00:03:47.67 but I became increasingly angry... 00:03:47.71\00:03:49.75 I wanted to rebel... I wasn't getting the attention 00:03:49.78\00:03:54.49 that I felt I deserved and, of course, I started acting out 00:03:54.53\00:03:56.91 and ultimately that led to some disciplinary issues 00:03:56.95\00:03:59.81 I stole from a store and got busted stealing... 00:03:59.84\00:04:02.22 and so, that was the first time I had interaction 00:04:02.25\00:04:04.57 with the police... but along with that rebellious 00:04:04.60\00:04:06.88 attitude came smoking cigarettes... 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.81 because that was one thing I knew I wasn't allowed to do... 00:04:08.85\00:04:11.29 but yet... I did... and at the end of 8th grade, 00:04:11.32\00:04:14.47 they transferred us to a public school... 00:04:14.50\00:04:16.64 so, I went from a Seventh-day Adventist School... 00:04:16.67\00:04:18.80 to a public school... and I was completely unprepared. 00:04:18.83\00:04:21.41 That is a huge transition isn't it? 00:04:21.45\00:04:24.51 I had that happen to me... and you go from a small... 00:04:24.55\00:04:28.15 kind of intimate setting... with the Adventist School 00:04:28.19\00:04:31.76 sometimes to a really big public school... 00:04:31.79\00:04:34.02 and it's... the classes are different, 00:04:34.05\00:04:35.90 the people are different, 00:04:35.94\00:04:37.15 so how did going to a public school, impact you spiritually? 00:04:37.18\00:04:40.92 Well, it impacted me to such a degree that 00:04:40.95\00:04:45.86 the spirituality was just completely in the background... 00:04:45.89\00:04:48.00 everything that I used to be... a Pathfinder... 00:04:48.03\00:04:50.05 I mean, I was a dedicated child of God... 00:04:50.08\00:04:52.58 but as soon as the divorce happened... 00:04:52.61\00:04:55.08 all of that disappeared... even though my dad was taking 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.46 us to Church on the weekends that he had us... 00:04:57.50\00:05:00.02 because we had to switch back and forth... 00:05:00.06\00:05:02.14 it was something I wasn't even thinking about 00:05:02.17\00:05:04.19 so, by the time I'm in School... I'm not thinking about the Bible 00:05:04.22\00:05:07.47 I'm not thinking about Christ, 00:05:07.50\00:05:08.61 I'm not thinking about God at all... 00:05:08.64\00:05:10.11 I'm thinking about "How can I develop friendships 00:05:10.15\00:05:13.50 to where I don't feel rejected, 00:05:13.54\00:05:15.16 or I don't feel I'm not part of the group... " 00:05:15.20\00:05:18.35 and that desire to want to be accepted... 00:05:18.38\00:05:21.15 ultimately led me down a very dark path... 00:05:21.18\00:05:23.92 So, 7th and 8th grades... 00:05:23.95\00:05:27.05 those were the pivotal years for you... 00:05:27.08\00:05:29.42 that's when things just kind of shifted into this real 00:05:29.45\00:05:33.69 "drift away" from the Lord and from the values 00:05:33.72\00:05:36.87 that you had... when you went to high school, 00:05:36.91\00:05:40.03 did you develop the wrong... 00:05:40.06\00:05:41.70 did you take on the wrong friends... the wrong associates 00:05:41.73\00:05:45.05 tell us about your associates in high school... 00:05:45.08\00:05:47.61 I was not athletic... I was, kind of a small guy, 00:05:47.64\00:05:49.96 I wasn't short... but I was definitely skinny... 00:05:49.99\00:05:52.27 so athleticism was not in my gene pool... 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.76 necessarily... not within me individually... 00:05:54.80\00:05:57.19 and I didn't necessarily like the negative attention 00:05:57.22\00:06:01.15 that the academics got... 00:06:01.19\00:06:02.93 so I was ultimately drawn to the troublemakers... 00:06:02.96\00:06:06.58 and, of course, with troublemakers comes trouble... 00:06:06.62\00:06:10.23 and... so I began having problems with my teachers 00:06:10.27\00:06:13.59 with my parents... 00:06:13.63\00:06:14.95 with individuals just in the community 00:06:14.98\00:06:16.68 and inside... internally... all of the little choices 00:06:16.71\00:06:20.43 that I was making... to rebel... 00:06:20.47\00:06:21.65 every decision that I made that was kind of... 00:06:21.69\00:06:24.86 "going against authority" built upon itself... 00:06:24.89\00:06:28.03 and what I was doing became progressively worse 00:06:28.06\00:06:31.22 and worse and worse and worse, and so I went from stealing... 00:06:31.26\00:06:34.16 and smoking cigarettes to smoking Marijuana, 00:06:34.20\00:06:37.46 and then, my criminal activity 00:06:37.49\00:06:40.89 as far as how I was acting out became more aggressive... 00:06:40.92\00:06:44.74 Tell us about that... 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.17 so, for instance, I remember one night... 00:06:46.21\00:06:48.07 we had gotten into an argument with an individual 00:06:48.11\00:06:51.15 who had already graduated high school, 00:06:51.19\00:06:52.80 and he was a "bad kid" in town 00:06:52.83\00:06:54.78 and I got the bright idea 00:06:54.81\00:06:56.64 that we were going to get him back one night... 00:06:56.67\00:06:58.02 so, I had a truck... we filled it with cinder blocks 00:06:58.05\00:07:00.10 and we got him to chase us 00:07:00.14\00:07:01.89 through town in the middle of the night... 00:07:01.93\00:07:03.14 and I had a friend in the back of the truck... 00:07:03.18\00:07:04.32 and he would pop up... and I remember, he was throwing 00:07:04.35\00:07:07.03 cinder blocks at this car while we were doing high speeds 00:07:07.06\00:07:09.73 down the middle of the town... now, I was 16 at that time 00:07:09.77\00:07:12.40 and we didn't care whether or not somebody got hurt 00:07:12.44\00:07:15.09 or whether or not somebody even got killed... 00:07:15.12\00:07:16.52 we just didn't care... but that was... one small step 00:07:16.55\00:07:20.80 that led ultimately towards that larger journey 00:07:20.83\00:07:23.73 Isn't it interesting, Greg, how... you know... 00:07:23.76\00:07:26.59 you make decisions and choices that really don't reflect 00:07:26.62\00:07:30.47 the intelligence that you have, I mean, you don't think, 00:07:30.51\00:07:34.32 from cause to effect... Hmmm... 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.06 you're just thinking this is what... 00:07:36.09\00:07:37.99 you're kind of ruled by your impulses, 00:07:38.02\00:07:40.06 Absolutely... 00:07:40.09\00:07:41.35 "This is what I feel like doing, so this is what I'm going to do" 00:07:41.38\00:07:43.92 and I mean, that's why smoking weed... 00:07:43.96\00:07:47.30 it's one of the reasons... smoking weed... with teenagers 00:07:47.33\00:07:51.11 is so bad... because the frontal lobe 00:07:51.15\00:07:54.28 is not as developed as it should be... 00:07:54.32\00:07:57.08 and so they're smoking weed and then making 00:07:57.11\00:07:59.80 choices that can just impact them for the rest of their lives 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.54 without realizing it... so, these are some of the things 00:08:02.57\00:08:05.48 that you were doing... you had started smoking weed 00:08:05.51\00:08:07.56 you had started to get more and more aggressive 00:08:07.59\00:08:09.42 Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:09.46\00:08:10.65 how did that play out when you were maybe 18 or 19? 00:08:10.69\00:08:14.29 Well, I had a pretty bad habit as far as Marijuana went... 00:08:14.33\00:08:19.82 but I didn't want to have to pay for my habit 00:08:19.85\00:08:21.92 and so I started selling in order to cover that 00:08:21.96\00:08:23.99 And how old were you during this time? 00:08:24.03\00:08:25.63 I started selling when I was 17 Okay... 00:08:25.66\00:08:27.69 but by 18 or 19... it was pretty well established 00:08:27.72\00:08:30.39 I had a certain amount of clientele 00:08:30.43\00:08:33.40 but I could tell that... I really loved the money... 00:08:33.43\00:08:37.72 I really loved the attention that I was getting from 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.72 living in that type of lifestyle and ultimately 00:08:40.76\00:08:43.29 I ended up meeting an individual who became a connection for me, 00:08:43.33\00:08:46.96 he was very well connected with an Organization 00:08:47.00\00:08:49.41 a criminal organization that was trafficking 00:08:49.44\00:08:51.78 large quantities of Marijuana from Mexico through Texas 00:08:51.82\00:08:55.68 and I mean, semi-trailers full of weed... 00:08:55.72\00:08:58.78 and he became my solid connection 00:08:58.82\00:09:01.26 and ultimately I... through him... 00:09:01.30\00:09:03.67 I started selling 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 00:09:03.70\00:09:06.33 40-pound blocks of Marijuana 00:09:06.37\00:09:07.60 Oh, so, you went from not really making much money 00:09:07.64\00:09:13.19 because you were a farmer's son all right... 00:09:13.22\00:09:14.51 Hmmm... hmmm... so you weren't really making 00:09:14.55\00:09:15.84 much when you were doing work... 00:09:15.88\00:09:18.15 to now... you're making big money 00:09:18.19\00:09:20.40 and you're getting attached to the money... 00:09:20.43\00:09:23.37 Oh absolutely... Right... and the lifestyle... 00:09:23.40\00:09:26.31 and everything that goes with it... 00:09:26.34\00:09:28.50 so, where did that take you, what happened after that? 00:09:28.53\00:09:32.78 Of course, with drugs come... drug use... 00:09:32.81\00:09:34.95 Hmmm... and I didn't keep the 00:09:34.99\00:09:36.92 "cardinal rule" of the drug dealer 00:09:36.95\00:09:38.41 and I started using my own supply... 00:09:38.45\00:09:39.84 eventually that led to a really bad Cocaine addiction 00:09:39.88\00:09:43.19 because Marijuana just wasn't enough for me, 00:09:43.23\00:09:44.99 I got sick of having to deal with larger quantities of 00:09:45.02\00:09:47.39 Marijuana and switched to Cocaine... 00:09:47.43\00:09:48.80 and selling Cocaine, of course, I'm using Cocaine 00:09:48.83\00:09:52.23 and that addiction just got insatiable... 00:09:52.26\00:09:54.96 we were trafficking in Ecstasy and Shrooms 00:09:55.00\00:09:57.69 and pharmaceuticals... and so my selection of material 00:09:57.73\00:10:02.21 that I was selling... it was large... 00:10:02.25\00:10:04.20 they ended up calling me the "Street Pharmacist" 00:10:04.24\00:10:05.86 because I carried so many of varieties of 00:10:05.89\00:10:07.90 everything you could think of... 00:10:07.94\00:10:09.26 On your person... 00:10:09.29\00:10:10.43 On my person... so, for instance if you 00:10:10.46\00:10:11.86 see me today... generally, I have a backpack... 00:10:11.89\00:10:14.03 well, back in the day... I had a backpack too... 00:10:14.06\00:10:16.17 today my Bible is in there... with my highlighting kit 00:10:16.21\00:10:19.62 and everything else... but back then... 00:10:19.66\00:10:21.27 I would have 2 or 3 different grades of Marijuana, 00:10:21.30\00:10:23.75 2 different types of Shrooms, 2 different kinds of Cocaine... 00:10:23.78\00:10:26.95 and I'd have pharmaceuticals through the roof 00:10:26.98\00:10:29.17 and so, they called me "The Street Pharmacist" 00:10:29.20\00:10:31.32 because I carried a veritable pharmacy... on my back... 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.91 Wow! and see, honestly, you don't look like you 00:10:33.95\00:10:37.09 had a bunch of drugs on you, I don't know how you looked then 00:10:37.13\00:10:40.21 now, of course, you have the love of the Lord 00:10:40.24\00:10:42.93 and it's in your face... Yes... 00:10:42.96\00:10:44.63 and your countenance, but then... 00:10:44.66\00:10:46.26 I don't know if you looked like a hippie 00:10:46.30\00:10:47.95 or you if you looked like you were using drugs yourself... 00:10:47.99\00:10:49.93 but, to me... it's amazing how Satan just starts you 00:10:49.96\00:10:55.19 at one place... you weren't doing drugs at all 00:10:55.22\00:10:58.75 at one point... once you started... 00:10:58.79\00:11:01.29 that was the gateway... 00:11:01.32\00:11:02.85 and Marijuana just led you to do Cocaine... 00:11:02.89\00:11:05.07 which led you to do the other things... 00:11:05.10\00:11:07.25 and you just spiraled downward... 00:11:07.28\00:11:09.22 so, you began selling and using and walking around 00:11:09.26\00:11:15.06 with the drugs on your person... Oh, I did... definitely... 00:11:15.09\00:11:18.98 and nobody advised you not to do that? 00:11:19.02\00:11:21.39 I didn't care... I got to the point where 00:11:21.43\00:11:23.77 the people who used to be my dealers 00:11:23.80\00:11:25.99 then became my customers... 00:11:26.02\00:11:27.34 and so, I became one of the top dogs in the area... 00:11:27.37\00:11:29.77 and even the Chief of Police in my town 00:11:29.81\00:11:31.58 would tell you that for 3 and 1/2 years 00:11:31.62\00:11:33.36 they focused on trying to bust me 00:11:33.39\00:11:35.28 that I was their main focus for such a long time 00:11:35.31\00:11:38.43 that when I finally got arrested it was like 00:11:38.46\00:11:40.94 they really didn't understand how to go about 00:11:40.97\00:11:43.38 doing the police work that they were doing 00:11:43.41\00:11:45.13 before they were focusing on me... 00:11:45.17\00:11:46.56 So you were so much the focal point of their attention... 00:11:46.60\00:11:51.77 and their activities... that once they had you... 00:11:51.81\00:11:54.05 they didn't really know what to do... 00:11:54.08\00:11:55.88 Yes... They didn't have much more to do 00:11:55.92\00:11:57.46 How did you avoid 00:11:57.50\00:12:00.95 avoid getting locked up for those 3 years, what did you do? 00:12:00.99\00:12:05.34 Well, I didn't have a criminal record to speak of 00:12:05.37\00:12:07.94 when I finally got arrested... 00:12:07.97\00:12:09.07 the DEA's Central Michigan Enforcement Team... 00:12:09.10\00:12:11.69 West Michigan Enforcement Team, State Police and the 00:12:11.72\00:12:13.63 County's Police Department, Kent County Sheriff's Department 00:12:13.66\00:12:15.53 they all busted me at once... 00:12:15.57\00:12:16.69 and I was charged with three counts of delivering 00:12:16.72\00:12:19.31 and manufacturing Cocaine less than 50 grams... 00:12:19.34\00:12:21.89 but because of my lack of criminal record 00:12:21.92\00:12:24.34 and because of my health problems at that time... 00:12:24.37\00:12:26.46 and because of other factors, 00:12:26.50\00:12:28.76 they just gave me a slap on the wrist 00:12:28.80\00:12:30.18 and that "slap on the wrist" was 97 days in jail... 00:12:30.21\00:12:32.65 felony probation... life-time felony probation 00:12:32.68\00:12:36.11 which was, I believe, 2 years, 8,000 dollars in fines, 00:12:36.15\00:12:39.11 honestly... they were giving me enough rope to hang myself 00:12:39.14\00:12:42.07 because they knew that I wasn't going to stop 00:12:42.10\00:12:44.24 but with the charges that I received... 00:12:44.27\00:12:46.65 the maximum sentence they could have given me 00:12:46.68\00:12:47.99 was 40 years so by giving me a rope, 00:12:48.03\00:12:49.91 they knew that the next time I got in trouble, 00:12:49.94\00:12:51.87 they'd be able to throw the book at me... 00:12:51.91\00:12:53.81 And there was a next time... 00:12:53.84\00:12:56.29 There absolutely was... Tell us about that... 00:12:56.33\00:12:58.06 So, I quit selling drugs... after I got busted in 2003... 00:12:58.10\00:13:02.01 but I never quit doing drugs... now, I quit using Marijuana 00:13:02.05\00:13:05.85 and Cocaine... but I was still an addict... 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.50 and I still wanted to get high 00:13:08.53\00:13:09.60 so, what I did was... I went to the doctor's office 00:13:09.63\00:13:11.41 I started getting prescriptions 00:13:11.45\00:13:12.65 and ultimately went through a Pain Clinic 00:13:12.69\00:13:14.80 and they prescribed me Morphine, and Avinza 00:13:14.83\00:13:16.91 which is 24-hours- sustained-release-morphine 00:13:16.98\00:13:18.83 and Fentanyl patches... 00:13:18.86\00:13:20.18 and so, I was getting all these prescriptions at once... 00:13:20.21\00:13:22.74 and so the Fentanyl patches, I started shooting up 00:13:22.78\00:13:25.77 and I'd mix that with Crack Cocaine... 00:13:25.81\00:13:27.41 so, breakfast for me... after a period of two years 00:13:27.44\00:13:30.83 was honestly a syringe for Fentanyl with Crack Cocaine 00:13:30.87\00:13:34.22 and I'd have a 3-day patch in each shot... 00:13:34.25\00:13:37.48 so, now, Fentanyl being 80 times more powerful than Morphine... 00:13:37.51\00:13:41.83 you can imagine just how high my tolerance was, 00:13:41.86\00:13:44.76 the doctors, ultimately, cut me off of my prescriptions 00:13:44.79\00:13:47.85 and that's what led me to doing what I ended up doing... 00:13:47.89\00:13:50.92 Which... we're going to come to in a second... 00:13:50.95\00:13:54.10 So, Greg, this is mind-boggling to me because 00:13:54.14\00:13:57.25 I always think about... 00:13:57.29\00:13:58.72 about God's plan and Satan's plan 00:13:58.76\00:14:02.05 and when you look and you see 00:14:02.08\00:14:05.30 how God's plan is to prosper you 00:14:05.34\00:14:07.46 and to give you an abundant life 00:14:07.49\00:14:09.55 and Satan's plan is to destroy you... 00:14:09.58\00:14:11.75 and when you're on Satan's path, and on that trajectory... 00:14:11.79\00:14:17.72 you don't really see or care about what's going on... 00:14:17.76\00:14:21.55 Is that where you were? did you care about your body 00:14:21.58\00:14:25.01 did you care about what this was doing to you... 00:14:25.05\00:14:28.44 morally or physically or spiritually... 00:14:28.48\00:14:31.12 Not at all... What were you thinking? 00:14:31.15\00:14:33.54 I had no concern for my well-being, as a matter of fact 00:14:33.57\00:14:35.53 when I was 19, my lung collapsed 00:14:35.56\00:14:37.30 the surgeon essentially told me when I was healed... 00:14:37.33\00:14:40.17 that one more time... if it collapsed another time 00:14:40.20\00:14:42.91 he would be able to fix it, the third time... I'd be done 00:14:42.94\00:14:44.85 and so, at the age of 19... 00:14:44.89\00:14:46.57 it was essentially a death sentence... in my mind 00:14:46.60\00:14:49.49 and so, I lived as recklessly as you could... 00:14:49.52\00:14:52.37 I had no concern about my life, 00:14:52.40\00:14:54.67 and honestly... I had no concern for anybody else's... 00:14:54.71\00:14:56.61 I was so hot-headed that if somebody... 00:14:56.65\00:14:58.65 I remember one time somebody told me 00:14:58.68\00:15:00.62 to turn the radio down... and the next thing... 00:15:00.65\00:15:02.25 they knew he had a bullet coming at him 00:15:02.28\00:15:03.60 and that was me... because I just didn't care anymore 00:15:03.63\00:15:06.33 and so, as far as shooting up or doing something to my body, 00:15:06.36\00:15:09.85 it didn't matter... 00:15:09.89\00:15:11.72 My! so what happened to you... 00:15:11.75\00:15:14.41 what was the thing that really happened that got your attention 00:15:14.45\00:15:18.33 Well, when the doctor's office cut me off... 00:15:18.37\00:15:20.37 I started breaking into houses in order to feed my habit... 00:15:20.40\00:15:23.58 which ultimately led the police officers to chase me down 00:15:23.62\00:15:26.29 and the day they arrested me, I had a gun in the car, 00:15:26.32\00:15:29.04 and I went to grab that gun to shoot that officer, 00:15:29.08\00:15:31.76 and a passenger who was in my car... 00:15:31.80\00:15:33.46 grabbed that gun before I could get it 00:15:33.50\00:15:35.13 and restricted me from getting to it... 00:15:35.17\00:15:37.09 and then the cops pulled me out of the car and I was arrested 00:15:37.13\00:15:39.65 that was God's version of saving my life... right there... 00:15:39.69\00:15:42.18 and so, I went through the Court process 00:15:42.21\00:15:44.95 which was... five months, then went to prison 00:15:44.98\00:15:46.85 ultimately, I was sentenced to 7 to 20 years 00:15:46.88\00:15:48.52 in the Michigan Department of Corrections... 00:15:48.56\00:15:50.16 and when I got to prison, 00:15:50.20\00:15:51.90 God started showing me all the times that He had saved my life, 00:15:51.94\00:15:54.89 all the times He had stepped in, in the face of my rebellion, 00:15:54.92\00:15:57.84 in the face of my stupidity... 00:15:57.87\00:15:59.16 you know, you never see it when you're living in it... 00:15:59.19\00:16:01.47 Right... right... because as you said... 00:16:01.51\00:16:02.85 the devil tends to bind you, 00:16:02.89\00:16:04.95 you're not focused on God or spiritual things, 00:16:04.98\00:16:07.66 but God showed me all the times He'd saved my life 00:16:07.69\00:16:10.36 the drug overdoses, the armed robberies... 00:16:10.39\00:16:12.41 all the stupid things that I did... 00:16:12.44\00:16:14.09 and that He just stepped in and said, "You know what... 00:16:14.12\00:16:15.87 I'm going to cover you in mercy right now, 00:16:15.90\00:16:17.97 because I know where you can be 10 years from now," so... 00:16:18.00\00:16:20.65 when I saw God's love, honestly I was so taken aback 00:16:20.68\00:16:25.95 by the fact that even in that rebellion... 00:16:25.98\00:16:27.62 He cared enough to save my life, 00:16:27.65\00:16:29.13 that really brought me back to who I used to be as a child 00:16:29.17\00:16:33.25 and I started asking myself, 00:16:33.29\00:16:34.40 "Why did I end up here... who am I, really who am I? 00:16:34.44\00:16:37.83 because now, all the drugs are gone... 00:16:37.86\00:16:39.36 all the "numbing" is gone that I had been trying to do 00:16:39.40\00:16:43.09 to stop myself from really processing 00:16:43.13\00:16:45.28 all the bad choices that I made, all those are gone... 00:16:45.31\00:16:48.56 and now I'm faced with reality, and it was hard... 00:16:48.59\00:16:51.80 but I could feel God's love there, 00:16:51.84\00:16:53.78 and I could feel Him really guiding me... 00:16:53.82\00:16:55.68 and so I got on my knees one night... 00:16:55.72\00:16:57.51 and I just started asking for forgiveness for every sin 00:16:57.55\00:17:00.30 that I could think of... I ended up in tears that night, 00:17:00.33\00:17:03.04 and obviously sobbing on my bunk... 00:17:03.08\00:17:05.24 and I crawl back under that bunk and as I rolled under that bunk, 00:17:05.28\00:17:08.01 I've told people that... I felt as if the weight of sin 00:17:08.05\00:17:11.42 was coming off my body... 00:17:11.45\00:17:12.49 like 8 inches of concrete was rising up off of my body... 00:17:12.53\00:17:16.32 and it was incredible because I knew at that point 00:17:16.36\00:17:19.76 that I had... honestly been forgiven 00:17:19.79\00:17:21.18 and I know... God doesn't do that for everybody 00:17:21.21\00:17:23.56 but I needed it right then... I had to have it... 00:17:23.60\00:17:25.70 because I was at such a point of hopelessness 00:17:25.73\00:17:27.73 because I had broken into my 00:17:27.77\00:17:28.94 parents' house to feed my addiction... 00:17:28.98\00:17:30.37 I had broken into my dad's house to steal that pistol 00:17:30.41\00:17:32.79 I was going to shoot that cop with... 00:17:32.82\00:17:34.05 I was on my way to go rob a pharmacy by the way... 00:17:34.09\00:17:36.38 but I could feel God's love 00:17:36.41\00:17:39.30 and I knew that I had been forgiven... 00:17:39.33\00:17:40.96 and I knew at that point in my life... even though I didn't 00:17:41.00\00:17:43.20 have a clue of what it was going to look like... 00:17:43.24\00:17:44.46 I knew my life was going to be different 00:17:44.50\00:17:46.07 and I knew that 00:17:46.10\00:17:47.34 even though I had 7 years of prison to do 00:17:47.38\00:17:49.30 that somehow it was going to be used to glorify God... 00:17:49.34\00:17:51.82 See... oh it is so juicy... because, what you just showed us 00:17:51.86\00:17:58.30 really... is that you had a physiological 00:17:58.34\00:18:02.26 response... to God's forgiveness 00:18:02.30\00:18:05.11 you felt that peace that comes over you... 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.63 when you feel forgiven by God... 00:18:07.67\00:18:09.30 it doesn't matter what you've done... 00:18:09.33\00:18:11.26 Viewers, it doesn't matter what you've done... 00:18:11.30\00:18:14.52 God will forgive you... 00:18:14.56\00:18:16.93 Greg, I want you to look into your camera there... 00:18:16.96\00:18:19.74 and I want you to tell a young man 00:18:19.77\00:18:21.91 who is right now in the throes of sin... 00:18:21.94\00:18:25.07 and where you were... drug dealing, robbing... 00:18:25.10\00:18:28.16 all that stuff... and tell him... what to do... 00:18:28.19\00:18:31.75 how he can break free... 00:18:31.78\00:18:34.07 of that feeling of just... imprisonment... 00:18:34.10\00:18:36.78 "One thing that I understood that really 00:18:36.81\00:18:39.73 God brought to my heart was that... 00:18:39.77\00:18:42.62 'your past does not have to dictate your future' 00:18:42.65\00:18:45.15 what you've done in the past is irrelevant... 00:18:45.19\00:18:47.65 God loves you nonetheless, 00:18:47.69\00:18:49.01 and He's willing to take you off from that... 00:18:49.05\00:18:51.10 and really... the only thing that binds you 00:18:51.13\00:18:53.36 is your choice, whether to accept the love 00:18:53.40\00:18:55.54 and the mercy and forgiveness that God has... 00:18:55.57\00:18:57.68 if you're willing to accept that He's willing to give it to you, 00:18:57.71\00:19:00.13 and I promise you whatever sins you've committed 00:19:00.17\00:19:02.64 He's wanting to forgive you, 00:19:02.68\00:19:03.85 and whatever binds you at this time... 00:19:03.89\00:19:05.88 he's willing to break from around you... 00:19:05.91\00:19:07.71 and He can lead you in that path of peace... He will... 00:19:07.75\00:19:11.09 I promise... that's one thing He's promised us 00:19:11.13\00:19:13.01 that's what salvation is about... " 00:19:13.05\00:19:15.25 Thank you... that is so true and people need to hear it 00:19:15.28\00:19:19.90 and then he can hear it from someone... 00:19:19.93\00:19:21.61 who's been there... 00:19:21.64\00:19:22.85 who's been doing the same things they're doing... 00:19:22.89\00:19:25.17 it's not like somebody like me 00:19:25.20\00:19:27.26 that doesn't know firsthand about it... 00:19:27.29\00:19:29.62 if you know firsthand about it, and you've experienced 00:19:29.65\00:19:32.17 going through the lawlessness, 00:19:32.21\00:19:34.49 and then you experience God's peace... 00:19:34.53\00:19:37.68 we're all sinners... 00:19:37.72\00:19:39.31 we're all sinners and in need of a Savior... 00:19:39.35\00:19:41.55 and we just have different paths that we go down 00:19:41.58\00:19:44.47 but we're all sinners, and we just praise God 00:19:44.51\00:19:47.37 that He delivers us... Amen... 00:19:47.40\00:19:49.56 because He will put us back on solid ground... 00:19:49.59\00:19:52.07 so, I need to ask you this because I didn't ask before... 00:19:52.10\00:19:56.26 when you decided that you were coming back 00:19:56.30\00:19:59.23 to the Lord... did you have someone 00:19:59.27\00:20:01.67 in prison that was saying, 00:20:01.70\00:20:03.11 "Hey, you need to kind of look at yourself... " 00:20:03.15\00:20:05.20 or was it the Holy Spirit directly... talking to you? 00:20:05.24\00:20:08.42 It was the Holy Spirit... when I went to prison, 00:20:08.45\00:20:11.38 I started looking at who was around me... 00:20:11.41\00:20:13.21 Hmmm... and by looking at those 00:20:13.25\00:20:14.80 around me... at first you want to sit there 00:20:14.83\00:20:16.87 and point fingers kind of like the Pharisee and 00:20:16.91\00:20:18.91 the Publican and the sinners 00:20:18.95\00:20:20.27 in the Synagogue... and as I'm looking at these 00:20:20.30\00:20:22.76 individuals... and I'm pointing fingers 00:20:22.79\00:20:24.81 in my mind... I realize I'm in the same place they are, 00:20:24.84\00:20:27.77 so in Society's eyes... I'm no different than they are 00:20:27.81\00:20:30.70 Hmmm... hmmm... so, I've got a serial killer 00:20:30.74\00:20:32.45 on one side or a serial rapist on one side 00:20:32.48\00:20:34.05 I've got an axe murderer on the other, 00:20:34.09\00:20:35.48 and in Society's eyes... 00:20:35.51\00:20:37.07 I am no different... 00:20:37.10\00:20:38.44 so who am I to judge them, 00:20:38.47\00:20:39.61 and so that's what really got me to thinking 00:20:39.65\00:20:42.42 about the fact that, "Hey, I had every opportunity 00:20:42.45\00:20:44.96 in the world... I've the whole future 00:20:44.99\00:20:47.71 is laid out in front of me... there are no obstacles... 00:20:47.75\00:20:50.38 except my own choices... " and when I realized that 00:20:50.41\00:20:53.80 it was on me... that those were my choices 00:20:53.84\00:20:55.86 that I made that led me to where I was at, 00:20:55.89\00:20:57.85 well, that opened up a whole different situation... 00:20:57.88\00:21:01.29 So, how long... after you had this realization 00:21:01.33\00:21:05.67 and this epiphany and this experience with God... 00:21:05.70\00:21:10.34 how long after that... did you get out of prison? 00:21:10.38\00:21:14.15 seven years... it was actually six and a half 00:21:14.19\00:21:17.90 Okay... so, I'd already done five months in the Country jail 00:21:17.93\00:21:21.24 when I finally got sentenced 00:21:21.28\00:21:22.62 and went to Michigan Department of Corrections... 00:21:22.66\00:21:24.34 so, I'd been in the Michigan Department of Corrections 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.55 formally for only 16 days... but I had five months previous 00:21:26.59\00:21:30.10 to that... to really start weighing 00:21:30.13\00:21:31.86 what had happened... 00:21:31.90\00:21:33.05 so I went through 7 years of prison... in all... 00:21:33.08\00:21:36.62 7 years of incarceration 00:21:36.66\00:21:37.88 and in that time... God gave me opportunities 00:21:37.91\00:21:40.51 left and right to practice my faith... 00:21:40.54\00:21:42.49 one... to get grounded... my dad sent me a 00:21:42.53\00:21:44.40 "Conflict of Ages" series and I went through that 00:21:44.43\00:21:46.57 and then the Bible studies from Amazing Facts... 00:21:46.61\00:21:49.10 and my dad had given me one of the biggest gifts... 00:21:49.13\00:21:51.58 it was the Bible... and that Bible... 00:21:51.62\00:21:53.33 I began studying... and I really started just 00:21:53.36\00:21:56.52 allowing that to become a big part of my life... 00:21:56.56\00:21:59.69 you know... getting back into the Word 00:21:59.72\00:22:01.51 and understanding those promises that were in there... 00:22:01.55\00:22:03.65 understanding what it meant to be a child of God... 00:22:03.69\00:22:05.73 to have that position in Christ understanding what freedom 00:22:05.76\00:22:09.63 what salvation was all about, it was huge for me 00:22:09.67\00:22:11.62 because then... it allowed me to realize 00:22:11.65\00:22:13.37 that I already had victory over all these things 00:22:13.40\00:22:15.38 that the devil was trying to tell me... 00:22:15.41\00:22:16.64 which he had me bound by... 00:22:16.67\00:22:18.04 and by understanding that freedom, 00:22:18.07\00:22:20.36 I was able to share that with others... 00:22:20.39\00:22:22.27 so no matter what prison I went to... 00:22:22.31\00:22:24.15 I had Bible Study Groups 00:22:24.18\00:22:25.28 whether I'd be studying with officers 00:22:25.32\00:22:26.53 or whether it was prisoners, sometimes in the visiting room 00:22:26.57\00:22:29.28 I had the Bible Study with my then-fiancée... 00:22:29.31\00:22:31.92 and you'd see people across from me listening 00:22:31.95\00:22:34.84 to the conversation and then once they were gone... 00:22:34.88\00:22:36.86 the officers would start asking questions 00:22:36.90\00:22:38.55 about what we were talking about in our Bible Study 00:22:38.59\00:22:40.88 and I could just see God working 00:22:40.92\00:22:42.01 Yes, how awesome is that! 00:22:42.04\00:22:43.92 It doesn't matter where we are... 00:22:43.95\00:22:45.89 Right... wherever we are... 00:22:45.92\00:22:47.71 we can let our light shine, and once you have that spirit 00:22:47.75\00:22:51.49 of God in you... you can't... 00:22:51.52\00:22:53.54 it's like fire shut up in your bones... right? 00:22:53.58\00:22:55.62 That's right... you have to talk about it... 00:22:55.65\00:22:57.66 so look at what God did 00:22:57.70\00:22:59.18 even where you were at that time... 00:22:59.21\00:23:01.40 you were then, now bringing other people to Him 00:23:01.43\00:23:04.72 and allowing God to use you 00:23:04.75\00:23:07.13 so that they could experience His peace as well... 00:23:07.16\00:23:09.98 That's right... and it didn't stop 00:23:10.02\00:23:11.72 once I got out of prison... 00:23:11.75\00:23:12.83 I formed "Conviction Ministries Incorporated" 00:23:12.87\00:23:15.37 That was going to be my 00:23:15.40\00:23:16.51 next question... tell us about that... 00:23:16.54\00:23:17.85 So, Conviction Ministries Incorporated is kind of the 00:23:17.89\00:23:20.42 outgrowth of the burden that God put on my heart... 00:23:20.45\00:23:22.91 in prison I had real difficulty finding quality material 00:23:22.94\00:23:27.09 once you are in prison, you are pretty much cut off 00:23:27.12\00:23:29.47 from Society... everybody you knew in Church 00:23:29.51\00:23:31.80 pretty much wants to push you away... 00:23:31.83\00:23:33.48 but Hebrews 13 says... 00:23:33.51\00:23:34.92 to remember those that are in prison 00:23:34.96\00:23:36.37 as though you are in prison with them... 00:23:36.40\00:23:37.77 as though you are chained with them... 00:23:37.81\00:23:39.15 and when I got out... I realized just because I was 00:23:39.18\00:23:41.76 out of prison didn't mean that I didn't have a duty 00:23:41.80\00:23:44.34 to those individuals that I left behind... 00:23:44.38\00:23:45.92 so, I started raising money to send 00:23:45.96\00:23:48.25 quality Study Bibles back in... 00:23:48.29\00:23:50.52 because I realized we can send tons of books 00:23:50.55\00:23:52.46 into prisons... but what they really need 00:23:52.50\00:23:54.83 is number one... a Bible... 00:23:54.87\00:23:56.11 and number 2, the Study Guides that have to go with the Bibles 00:23:56.14\00:23:59.30 because if I send a Bible into prison... 00:23:59.34\00:24:00.95 there are going to be a hundred people there 00:24:00.99\00:24:02.57 to misinterpret that Bible... 00:24:02.61\00:24:04.15 but, if I send a Bible in there and in that Bible 00:24:04.18\00:24:07.37 is cross reference and has all of our material... in that Bible 00:24:07.41\00:24:11.23 it becomes much harder for somebody to come along 00:24:11.27\00:24:14.41 and tell the recipient of that Bible 00:24:14.45\00:24:16.72 error... and so they don't accept it... 00:24:16.76\00:24:18.97 so Conviction Ministries was formed to raise money 00:24:19.00\00:24:21.96 to purchase our... Seventh-day Adventist material 00:24:22.00\00:24:24.93 our Study Bibles... and to send them back in... 00:24:24.96\00:24:26.86 That's tremendous... 00:24:26.89\00:24:29.09 and how old is Convictions Ministries? 00:24:29.12\00:24:30.94 I had to start it when I got off parole... 00:24:30.97\00:24:32.72 because they said... it was about a "conflict of interest" 00:24:32.75\00:24:34.95 so, I formally started it in 2012... 00:24:34.98\00:24:37.85 and between 2013 and 2014... so far, we have sent in 00:24:37.89\00:24:43.11 over 14,000 dollars in Bibles... 00:24:43.14\00:24:46.26 now, I'm working with Remnant Publications right now 00:24:46.30\00:24:49.35 to come out with an Outreach edition of our Bible 00:24:49.38\00:24:52.27 so, it will have all the Remnant Study Guides 00:24:52.31\00:24:55.16 in the back... all the study material 00:24:55.19\00:24:56.54 that comes in the Remnant Study Bible 00:24:56.58\00:24:57.86 will be in the back... the only thing it won't have 00:24:57.89\00:25:00.51 is the Spirit of Prophecy quotes in the front... 00:25:00.54\00:25:02.59 Tell us what's in there... 00:25:02.62\00:25:03.94 So, in the Bible that we'll have, 00:25:03.98\00:25:05.93 it will have the parables of Christ 00:25:05.96\00:25:07.88 it will have the sanctuary... 00:25:07.92\00:25:09.38 all the furniture of the sanctuary broken down 00:25:09.42\00:25:11.25 because what a lot of people don't understand is... 00:25:11.29\00:25:13.21 the sanctuary message 00:25:13.24\00:25:14.67 is actually the key to understanding salvation 00:25:14.71\00:25:17.12 if you understand what 00:25:17.15\00:25:18.39 each of those pieces of furniture mean, 00:25:18.43\00:25:20.18 you will understand a facet of salvation... 00:25:20.22\00:25:21.95 Hmmm... hmmm... and so, the Remnant Study Bible 00:25:21.99\00:25:23.93 breaks that down... it also has one of the largest 00:25:23.96\00:25:26.11 concordances that you can find in any Bible... 00:25:26.14\00:25:28.25 it's a 3-column, 180-page concordance... 00:25:28.29\00:25:30.72 on top of that, it covers the miracles, 00:25:30.76\00:25:32.98 it covers the parables, 00:25:33.01\00:25:34.04 has sections from Christ's Object Lessons 00:25:34.08\00:25:36.53 and it goes through all of our doctrines 00:25:36.56\00:25:38.91 as a 26-topic chain reference, 00:25:38.94\00:25:41.20 so that it takes you not only through the 00:25:41.24\00:25:43.35 fundamentals of our doctrines, 00:25:43.38\00:25:44.79 but it goes through some of the finer facets 00:25:44.82\00:25:47.21 of our doctrines that kind of off-shoot subjects 00:25:47.25\00:25:49.60 that most Study Bibles and 00:25:49.63\00:25:51.63 definitely no other Adventist Bible covers 00:25:51.66\00:25:53.49 and so, I want to be able to provide that message for anybody 00:25:53.53\00:25:57.37 in prison who wants to understand the truth... 00:25:57.41\00:26:00.54 and by offering a Bible at an inexpensive rate... 00:26:00.57\00:26:03.67 we'll be able to reach a lot of individuals 00:26:03.70\00:26:05.69 that we never would have been able to touch... 00:26:05.72\00:26:07.48 That is wonderful... now suppose some people want to 00:26:07.51\00:26:10.52 donate Bibles to prisoners to inmates in various Facilities 00:26:10.56\00:26:15.33 how can they get in touch with you 00:26:15.37\00:26:16.82 you have your website... we'll put your website 00:26:16.86\00:26:18.82 up on the screen...
