Did you know that millions of American Children can't read 00:00:01.20\00:00:03.97 and that puts them directly on the drop-out track? 00:00:04.00\00:00:07.24 Well, stay tuned to see what my guest 00:00:07.27\00:00:09.37 is doing about it... 00:00:09.40\00:00:10.54 My name is Yvonne Lewis and you're watching 00:00:10.57\00:00:12.97 Urban Report... 00:00:13.01\00:00:14.21 Hello and welcome to Urban Report... 00:00:35.96\00:00:38.07 My guest today is Roy Dockery 00:00:38.10\00:00:40.67 a Literacy Consultant that is on a crusade 00:00:40.70\00:00:43.41 to make a difference... 00:00:43.44\00:00:44.74 Welcome to Urban Report... Roy... 00:00:44.77\00:00:47.44 Good afternoon... good afternoon thank you for having me... 00:00:47.48\00:00:50.81 Oh, it's so great to have you because this topic 00:00:50.85\00:00:53.88 is one that's so near and dear to my heart... 00:00:53.92\00:00:56.92 I mean... reading is so fundamental 00:00:56.95\00:00:59.89 and yet... millions of Americans can't read... 00:00:59.92\00:01:03.56 tell us a little bit about that problem... if you would... 00:01:03.59\00:01:07.13 Well, you know, it's a critical issue... like you said... 00:01:07.13\00:01:10.63 I mean the fundamentals for 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.60 education and the fundamentals of being able to be 00:01:12.63\00:01:15.67 successful and independent in life really come from 00:01:15.70\00:01:18.97 the ability to read... like... to be able to take instructions 00:01:19.01\00:01:22.11 to be able to pick up a book or to even pick up a manual 00:01:22.14\00:01:25.28 right?... to be able to follow a process 00:01:25.31\00:01:27.32 and complete a task or to complete an objective... 00:01:27.35\00:01:30.69 so, you know, with people not really 00:01:30.72\00:01:32.95 taking the time to pay attention to literacy within the Country 00:01:32.99\00:01:36.26 we tend to focus and overlook 00:01:36.29\00:01:38.99 the underlying issue, right? which is the fact that we have 00:01:39.03\00:01:42.00 a problem in this Country, especially in particular 00:01:42.03\00:01:44.83 communities and with certain demographic sub-sets... 00:01:44.87\00:01:47.64 that we have... you know... there's an issue 00:01:47.67\00:01:49.64 that people can't read you know, without proper reading 00:01:49.67\00:01:52.91 and writing skills it's hard for people 00:01:52.94\00:01:55.24 to be successful... even in today's 00:01:55.28\00:01:57.51 fast-moving society... 00:01:57.55\00:01:58.88 Yes, it's something that we kind of take for granted 00:01:58.91\00:02:03.02 sometimes because... that's just what we do... 00:02:03.05\00:02:05.55 we read and we just kind of take for granted 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.96 that others can read... but if you think about 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.99 how crippled we would be if we couldn't read... 00:02:11.03\00:02:14.00 if we could not pick up that Bible 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.33 and read that Bible... if we couldn't do the things 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.80 that help us to grow... intellectually, spiritually, 00:02:19.83\00:02:23.24 I mean, this is a crippling thing 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.94 when you can't read... 00:02:25.97\00:02:27.78 so, I'm really thankful that 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.08 you and your Organization 00:02:30.11\00:02:32.31 and we're going to talk more about that in a minute 00:02:32.35\00:02:34.75 are doing something... let's talk about you, though, 00:02:34.78\00:02:37.12 what gave you this passion for reading? 00:02:37.15\00:02:40.96 well, I think, one of the things that really gave me 00:02:40.99\00:02:44.99 more of a passion for reading as I got older 00:02:45.03\00:02:47.40 and kind of got out of college and transitioned 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.76 into being a parent myself... 00:02:49.80\00:02:51.07 was trying to identify what skill... right... 00:02:51.10\00:02:54.47 that you want to emphasize to your children 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.87 Hmmm... So, I had a rather rough 00:02:57.91\00:03:00.61 upbringing... I was raised by a single parent 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.58 but, you know, the current household that I have 00:03:02.61\00:03:04.85 I have a stay-at-home wife, I have 2 daughters... 00:03:04.88\00:03:07.05 so, it was really trying to focus on, okay, 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.85 where do we need to invest in our children 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.55 to make sure that they're on the right track... 00:03:12.59\00:03:14.76 to be successful... so, one of the first things 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.93 we did when my oldest daughter was born... 00:03:16.96\00:03:18.76 and my wife first stayed at home was to make sure 00:03:18.79\00:03:22.03 that we emphasized in our home that she could read... 00:03:22.06\00:03:24.93 right... so we went out and we bought all the 00:03:24.97\00:03:27.20 we bought the "Hooked on Phonics" programs 00:03:27.24\00:03:29.64 and we bought "Your Baby Can Read" DVDs 00:03:29.67\00:03:32.04 you know for the first... 00:03:32.07\00:03:33.17 I mean, after, I think right around the age of 4 months 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.91 we just started consistently pushing... 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.31 you know, just reading to our daughter... 00:03:38.35\00:03:40.65 not necessarily... learning... but phonetics... 00:03:40.68\00:03:43.08 to knowing her alphabet and being able to read 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.49 is what we concentrated on for her first 2 years of life... 00:03:45.52\00:03:49.06 and, for me to see that transition, 00:03:49.09\00:03:52.69 in just allowing... her being able to read at such 00:03:52.73\00:03:56.90 an early age... she could read by the time 00:03:56.93\00:03:59.13 she was two... how that has kind of set her up 00:03:59.17\00:04:01.54 to be successful in so many other things... 00:04:01.57\00:04:03.84 so, when she enters into... when she does ballet 00:04:03.87\00:04:06.07 or when she does science or anything else... 00:04:06.11\00:04:08.48 her ability to be able to read, really makes instruction easier 00:04:08.51\00:04:13.68 it makes her excellent from an educational perspective 00:04:13.72\00:04:17.49 she's very articulate... why? because she has a larger 00:04:17.89\00:04:20.89 vocabulary because she's been reading for such a long time 00:04:20.92\00:04:23.86 and it just amazes people even when they talk to her 00:04:23.89\00:04:26.13 that she's five years old... and so in that... 00:04:26.16\00:04:28.96 being that was the standard that we had in our home, 00:04:29.00\00:04:32.73 it started to concern me when I saw other children 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.50 that couldn't read... and then, to even expand it 00:04:36.54\00:04:40.28 outside of that... I was a mentor 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.08 when I was in college and I mentored a 19-year-old 00:04:42.11\00:04:44.41 high school student that couldn't read all the words 00:04:44.45\00:04:46.68 on his college application, so, just kind of looking at it 00:04:46.72\00:04:50.25 from that perspective, getting kind of more actively 00:04:50.29\00:04:53.69 involved in community now that I was formally 00:04:53.72\00:04:56.93 in the military and so now that I'm out of the military 00:04:56.96\00:04:58.76 and have some of the... a little bit more freedom 00:04:58.79\00:05:00.93 and time to do a lot more community activism 00:05:00.96\00:05:03.57 literacy... it kind of came to me 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.23 as an issue right... because looking at the issues 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.54 that plague our Society... 00:05:08.57\00:05:09.64 I have a production company that did a film about 00:05:09.67\00:05:12.87 Trayvon Martin... you know, dealing with mentoring 00:05:12.91\00:05:16.01 and after-school programs and youth development 00:05:16.04\00:05:18.85 it started to become apparent to me... right... 00:05:18.88\00:05:21.68 that the underlying issue that I can pull 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.35 out of every situation... was the fact that 00:05:24.39\00:05:26.99 we have an issue with our youth 00:05:27.02\00:05:28.79 and just with our population in general... 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.29 that we ignore... which is when people don't know 00:05:31.33\00:05:33.50 how to read... it really makes it difficult 00:05:33.53\00:05:36.03 for them to have a definitive path 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.93 whether that's spiritual or whether that's their 00:05:37.97\00:05:39.73 personal path... 00:05:39.77\00:05:40.84 Absolutely... you know, you said some 00:05:40.87\00:05:43.61 great things... number one... 00:05:43.64\00:05:44.94 one of the things that really got me 00:05:44.97\00:05:48.01 is that... you started early 00:05:48.04\00:05:50.15 working with your daughter 00:05:50.18\00:05:52.21 and... and... not only... I mean... you weren't... 00:05:52.25\00:05:55.02 it sounds to me as though you weren't pushing her 00:05:55.05\00:05:58.22 but you were just reading to her... 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.39 you know, one of the things that we have to do 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.79 as parents... and this is one of the things that 00:06:03.83\00:06:06.63 sounded so great about what you were saying 00:06:06.66\00:06:09.46 you are involved with your children... 00:06:09.50\00:06:12.13 do you have one child or two children? 00:06:12.17\00:06:14.37 I have two children now, so I have a 5-year-old daughter 00:06:14.40\00:06:18.47 and a 3-year-old daughter as well... 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.58 Okay... so you're involved as a parent, 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.58 as a father... you are involved 00:06:22.61\00:06:24.98 with your children... and you have a wife that 00:06:25.01\00:06:27.25 gets, thank God, she gets to stay home 00:06:27.28\00:06:29.88 and also impact the children you know, in that way... 00:06:29.92\00:06:34.22 so, now, you can take your kids to the library 00:06:34.26\00:06:39.19 or do things that they need 00:06:39.23\00:06:42.76 to encourage them 00:06:42.80\00:06:44.10 academically... so now your daughter is 5 00:06:44.13\00:06:47.24 your older daughter is 5 and she has been reading 00:06:47.27\00:06:50.94 since she was 2... so the parental involvement 00:06:50.97\00:06:54.61 piece... is such an important piece 00:06:54.64\00:06:57.01 and one of the things... that I noticed... 00:06:57.05\00:07:00.05 is that... many times... for whatever reason 00:07:00.08\00:07:03.05 many times... in lower-income homes 00:07:03.08\00:07:06.76 there's so much chaos going on, that it's hard for the parent 00:07:06.79\00:07:10.73 to focus, often, on... those aspects 00:07:10.76\00:07:14.83 of the child's development, the academic aspects 00:07:14.86\00:07:17.53 either... there's a lot of chaos... 00:07:17.57\00:07:19.43 or the parent themselves are ill-equipped to assist 00:07:19.47\00:07:24.87 the children... so now we have a... 00:07:24.91\00:07:26.94 kind of systemic issue... but what's the blessing about 00:07:26.98\00:07:30.55 what you said... is that... you were able to help 00:07:30.58\00:07:33.75 your children... and I think... no matter 00:07:33.78\00:07:35.95 where you are as a parent, even if you have 00:07:35.98\00:07:38.09 learning issues yourself, you can become more involved 00:07:38.12\00:07:42.42 with your children's development I think... 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.56 this is a critical piece... because we can't just put it 00:07:44.59\00:07:47.23 on the schools... we have to take 00:07:47.30\00:07:49.36 personal responsibility... and do something 00:07:49.40\00:07:51.93 about our children's learning... Absolutely... 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.97 and I think the key words you said were 00:07:55.00\00:07:57.97 to take responsibility, right? 00:07:58.01\00:07:59.31 and especially with young children... 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.81 because the most critical ages for development 00:08:01.84\00:08:04.21 for children... most studies show... 00:08:04.25\00:08:06.48 are kind of up through the age of 5... right? 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.92 which is before... you can even put them in 00:08:08.95\00:08:11.29 public school and even in States... 00:08:11.32\00:08:12.69 I live in the State of Delaware, where Pre-school 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.52 isn't a State requirement... and the only way you can 00:08:15.56\00:08:18.29 get a child into Pre-school is that they have a 00:08:18.33\00:08:20.36 learning disability... so there is no K4... 00:08:20.40\00:08:22.33 for the normal children or even for what the State 00:08:22.36\00:08:27.57 would consider... a gifted child... right? 00:08:27.60\00:08:29.47 so, the most fundamental years of development... 00:08:29.50\00:08:32.74 there's no Society... 00:08:32.77\00:08:35.61 there's no public institution anyway to kind of promote 00:08:35.64\00:08:39.65 that learning and that education and so, I mean, originally 00:08:39.68\00:08:43.65 with me and my wife... it was a decision... that 00:08:43.69\00:08:45.92 she'll stay home... she was going to stay home 00:08:45.95\00:08:47.99 for the first 6 months... so we'll stay home 00:08:48.02\00:08:50.03 for the first 6 months... we'll be more comfortable 00:08:50.06\00:08:52.06 and then we'll see... how it goes from there... 00:08:52.09\00:08:54.00 but 6 months became a year and a year has become 5... 00:08:54.00\00:08:57.90 going on 6 years now... but... I was in the military 00:08:57.93\00:09:01.00 at the time so... it was a considerable sacrifice 00:09:01.04\00:09:04.07 for us financially for my wife to stay home 00:09:04.11\00:09:07.34 she has a degree... she was working as a 00:09:07.38\00:09:09.01 Physical Therapy Assistant... and so... but we made that 00:09:09.04\00:09:12.21 it's essentially... it's an investment... right? 00:09:12.25\00:09:13.92 because it's the trade-off between sending our daughter 00:09:13.95\00:09:16.75 to daycare where we didn't really see any facilities 00:09:16.79\00:09:19.52 that we thought.. what would continually 00:09:19.55\00:09:21.52 kind of try to instruct her... versus just observing her 00:09:21.56\00:09:25.03 and making sure that she was safe... 00:09:25.06\00:09:27.03 but I mean... from a financial perspective... 00:09:27.10\00:09:28.90 it wasn't a considerable investment... 00:09:28.93\00:09:30.33 we bought some DVDs... and we bought books... 00:09:30.37\00:09:32.80 from the thrift store... people have a... 00:09:32.83\00:09:35.24 some people jump back at Goodwill... 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.01 but... I have hundreds of books in my house 00:09:37.04\00:09:39.04 that we bought from Goodwill, 00:09:39.07\00:09:41.24 and we let our daughters pick them out 00:09:41.28\00:09:42.94 and we just... and we read to them... 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.58 but, the funny thing is that... I didn't... even at that time... 00:09:44.61\00:09:47.82 I didn't really understand that we were teaching her 00:09:47.85\00:09:50.35 literacy... right... we thought we were trying 00:09:50.39\00:09:52.49 to set her up for... we were educating her... 00:09:52.52\00:09:54.62 Hmmm... but we really weren't... 00:09:54.66\00:09:56.12 we weren't teaching her any topics right... 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.63 I mean, I've been an instructor for years 00:09:58.66\00:09:59.93 and done a number of things... so when I look at the 00:09:59.96\00:10:02.30 kind of instruction and teaching that I do 00:10:02.33\00:10:04.07 from a Corporate perspective... 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.17 we weren't really teaching her anything... 00:10:05.20\00:10:07.07 we weren't teaching subjects, 00:10:07.10\00:10:08.97 we weren't teaching Science or Math... 00:10:09.00\00:10:10.94 we were just teaching her how to read... 00:10:10.97\00:10:12.84 and so now, looking back at... the most fundamental thing 00:10:12.87\00:10:16.28 that we did... was teaching her how to read 00:10:16.31\00:10:18.48 and then seeing the way that it has benefitted her... 00:10:18.51\00:10:20.58 so my daughter is 5... she just graduated 00:10:20.62\00:10:22.75 from the first grade... so, that's a requirement for it 00:10:22.78\00:10:27.22 That's so cute... it's really just because 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.62 of the fact that that she's able to excel... even in school 00:10:29.66\00:10:33.33 because she doesn't need as much individual attention 00:10:33.36\00:10:35.96 because she can read the instructions... 00:10:36.00\00:10:37.73 now, when she was in Kindergarten... 00:10:37.77\00:10:39.43 no one else in Kindergarten could read the instructions 00:10:39.47\00:10:42.37 and she could... so it allowed her to be more independent 00:10:42.40\00:10:45.31 and it allowed her to be recognized... 00:10:45.34\00:10:47.64 as, you know, kind of a... as an exceptional student, 00:10:47.68\00:10:50.28 when the fact of the matter is... the only real difference 00:10:50.31\00:10:53.08 between her and the other kids in her class... 00:10:53.11\00:10:54.85 was that she could read... Yeah, and you know what Roy... 00:10:54.88\00:10:57.49 you said that you weren't teaching her anything 00:10:57.52\00:11:00.09 but you know what... you were not teaching 00:11:00.12\00:11:01.62 her subjects... but you were teaching her things... 00:11:01.66\00:11:04.93 you were teaching her the importance of 00:11:04.96\00:11:07.00 reading... to get a joy from reading... 00:11:07.03\00:11:08.96 you were... by example... you were teaching her 00:11:09.00\00:11:12.23 how significant it is... to know how to read... 00:11:12.27\00:11:15.30 so, even though you weren't teaching subjects... 00:11:15.34\00:11:18.37 you were teaching her... and then you were 00:11:18.41\00:11:20.18 teaching her the importance of parental involvement... 00:11:20.21\00:11:23.04 because... I think that... while we're not trying to 00:11:23.08\00:11:25.58 lay a guilt trip on mothers that have to work... 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.08 I mean... I was a single parent, I had to work... 00:11:28.12\00:11:30.75 you have to work if you have to work... 00:11:30.79\00:11:32.55 but if you can be at home with your children... 00:11:32.59\00:11:36.83 it's a great thing... because you can really reinforce 00:11:36.86\00:11:40.93 and nurture and shape... the values of your children... 00:11:40.96\00:11:44.93 so, I think if you can do that, it's a blessing to be able to 00:11:44.97\00:11:48.70 do that... and it's an investment... 00:11:48.74\00:11:50.61 like you said... it's an investment... 00:11:50.64\00:11:52.74 what about when you were growing up... 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.78 what was the environment like when you were growing up? 00:11:54.81\00:11:57.78 Well, I had a rather... I guess... I would call it 00:11:57.81\00:12:01.35 a tumultuous upbringing... so, I mean, my parents 00:12:01.38\00:12:04.15 originally got divorced when I was 2 years old... 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.96 so, I grew up... with a single mother... 00:12:06.99\00:12:09.76 and so, my mother, she worked... we spent a lot of time 00:12:09.79\00:12:12.83 at home alone... or with our grandparents... 00:12:12.86\00:12:15.83 my great- my grandmother on my mother's 00:12:15.86\00:12:18.80 side... actually took care of most of the grandkids... 00:12:18.83\00:12:21.14 so, is it was essentially a Day Care... 00:12:21.17\00:12:22.90 so it was all the grandkids 00:12:22.94\00:12:24.97 kind of running around the house... and unfortunately 00:12:25.01\00:12:28.31 in my family... just based from a traditional standpoint 00:12:28.34\00:12:31.41 there wasn't a lot of focus on education... 00:12:31.45\00:12:33.48 especially for the men... because all the men in my family 00:12:33.52\00:12:37.62 are mostly tradesmen... so, it's more... 00:12:37.65\00:12:40.59 working with their hands really, 00:12:40.62\00:12:42.09 than their working with their minds... 00:12:42.12\00:12:43.96 you know, I was taught how to do dry walling and how to do 00:12:43.99\00:12:47.10 other things but the only real focus... 00:12:47.13\00:12:49.46 the interesting thing... the only real focus we had on 00:12:49.50\00:12:51.87 reading within our family was reading the Bible... 00:12:51.90\00:12:55.47 so, at an early age... it was my great-grandmother 00:12:55.50\00:12:58.64 who actually used to spend a lot of time with me 00:12:58.67\00:13:01.68 going through different Scriptures in the Bible... 00:13:01.71\00:13:04.68 and I actually learned how to read... 00:13:04.71\00:13:06.48 by reading the Bible... and so, that's where my 00:13:06.51\00:13:10.29 literacy actually began... because 00:13:10.32\00:13:12.25 from a school perspective 00:13:12.29\00:13:13.52 by the time I was in the 11th Grade... 00:13:13.56\00:13:15.82 I was at my 13th school... we moved from State to State 00:13:15.86\00:13:20.03 You were on the 13th school by the time you were 00:13:20.06\00:13:24.17 in the 11th grade? Yes... yeah... in the 11th grade 00:13:24.20\00:13:28.30 I was at my 13th school... My! what a... 00:13:28.34\00:13:30.84 so, how did that affect you academically? 00:13:30.87\00:13:33.78 Well, the interesting thing is... I was... 00:13:33.81\00:13:36.11 school... to me has never been difficult... 00:13:36.14\00:13:38.65 and one of the reasons was because I was always 00:13:38.68\00:13:41.08 I mean, I guess I just kind of had a knack for reading... 00:13:41.12\00:13:44.72 so, even... same thing.. with changing schools so often 00:13:44.75\00:13:48.32 you missed a lot of days in class... 00:13:48.36\00:13:50.29 and so, to catch up was easy for me... 00:13:50.33\00:13:52.13 because I could read the book and comprehend what was in it... 00:13:52.16\00:13:54.60 so, even if I was absent, I could still get a good grade 00:13:54.63\00:13:57.17 on the test... academically, I didn't do bad... 00:13:57.20\00:14:01.00 I had good grades academically, but from a social aspect 00:14:01.04\00:14:04.37 I didn't interact much with other kids... 00:14:04.41\00:14:06.11 I never really had any direction or involvement from teachers 00:14:06.14\00:14:09.98 because I never spend more than 6 to 8 months 00:14:10.01\00:14:12.48 in the same school... so, going from school to school 00:14:12.51\00:14:15.38 you would develop a relationship with a teacher 00:14:15.42\00:14:17.09 and then 2 months later... we would move... 00:14:17.12\00:14:18.79 and so I didn't really have any strategic influences 00:14:18.82\00:14:22.16 even within the family or really even from 00:14:22.19\00:14:25.26 an academic perspective... of people 00:14:25.29\00:14:27.40 who were trying to nurture 00:14:27.40\00:14:28.66 or any kind of gift or development... 00:14:28.70\00:14:31.23 now actually I didn't really develop a love for reading 00:14:31.27\00:14:33.47 until I went to college... so, I kind of read 00:14:33.50\00:14:36.10 as a necessity to catch up and to be able to 00:14:36.14\00:14:38.74 teach myself things that I missed in school 00:14:38.77\00:14:41.34 or if I felt like acting up in school 00:14:41.38\00:14:44.25 then... I could just grab the book later on 00:14:44.28\00:14:46.61 at home and pick it up and read the subject 00:14:46.65\00:14:48.92 and be ready for a test, but I didn't even develop 00:14:48.95\00:14:51.69 a love for reading myself, until I was 19-years-old 00:14:51.72\00:14:54.42 and in my second semester in college 00:14:54.46\00:14:56.29 Wow... so you were 19-years-old when you developed this love 00:14:56.32\00:15:01.63 for reading... how did that happen? 00:15:01.66\00:15:02.86 It's an interesting way that it occurred... 00:15:02.90\00:15:05.87 I was actually... at that time I was starting to develop 00:15:05.90\00:15:08.77 a relationship back with my father 00:15:08.80\00:15:10.44 after we had been separated 00:15:10.47\00:15:12.34 for several years... as I went to college 00:15:12.37\00:15:14.58 and then... so from there what he did is... 00:15:14.61\00:15:17.38 he gave me a book... on a topic that I was 00:15:17.41\00:15:19.45 interested in... that he came across... 00:15:19.48\00:15:21.45 and so... that was one of the first books that I read 00:15:21.48\00:15:24.35 from cover to cover... right... it was interesting to me 00:15:24.39\00:15:27.22 and it was kind of different to read something 00:15:27.26\00:15:30.06 for a personal reason versus reading for school 00:15:30.09\00:15:32.83 or like reading the Bible or something... 00:15:32.86\00:15:35.20 something that I wasn't inherently interested in 00:15:35.23\00:15:38.93 at the time... so from that... what I did was 00:15:38.97\00:15:41.44 I kind of read that book and then I looked 00:15:41.47\00:15:43.87 in the reference chapter then I researched other things 00:15:43.91\00:15:46.47 by that author and from that point... 00:15:46.51\00:15:49.38 I just started building a library... 00:15:49.41\00:15:51.28 and I continued to read... and I continued... 00:15:51.31\00:15:53.11 and it was weird... because from that point forward 00:15:53.15\00:15:55.98 anytime I came across an interest or an issue, 00:15:56.02\00:15:59.09 I would read about it... Right... 00:15:59.12\00:16:00.89 so, yeah... so growing up without a father 00:16:00.92\00:16:03.59 and worrying about going into fatherhood 00:16:03.63\00:16:06.26 I would read books on fatherhood... 00:16:06.29\00:16:07.93 you know, spiritual development, I would read on discernment 00:16:07.96\00:16:10.57 I would read books on discipleship 00:16:10.60\00:16:13.67 so, it kind of expanded my horizons 00:16:13.70\00:16:16.71 to where I kind of didn't allow people, 00:16:16.74\00:16:19.07 it stopped me from allowing 00:16:19.11\00:16:21.44 people to give me information, 00:16:21.48\00:16:22.91 and it turned me into a person 00:16:22.94\00:16:24.31 who sought it out... Oh man, that's some rich stuff 00:16:24.35\00:16:28.48 right there, Roy, because... 00:16:28.52\00:16:30.05 okay... let's go back... you and your dad... 00:16:30.09\00:16:34.56 were kind of reconnecting and your dad 00:16:34.59\00:16:38.83 was encouraging you to read... 00:16:38.86\00:16:42.06 so he gave some books on topics that you were 00:16:42.10\00:16:45.40 interested in... that's number one... 00:16:45.43\00:16:47.57 one of the things we can do with our kids 00:16:47.60\00:16:49.70 is identify their interests and as long as these interests 00:16:49.74\00:16:53.84 don't compromise them spiritually, 00:16:53.88\00:16:56.14 give them books to read about their interests... 00:16:56.18\00:16:59.48 so, this happened with Ben Carson 00:16:59.51\00:17:02.15 his mom gave him something and he became an expert 00:17:02.18\00:17:05.29 in whatever it was that he was interested in... 00:17:05.32\00:17:08.36 you can become an expert, and what you did 00:17:08.39\00:17:11.66 you began to seek things out, you know... in the Bible... 00:17:11.69\00:17:15.30 there's an allusion to to the Bereans... 00:17:15.33\00:17:18.37 they didn't just take what they were given... 00:17:18.40\00:17:20.64 they sought things out... 00:17:20.67\00:17:22.14 they studied for themselves, 00:17:22.17\00:17:23.61 that's what you did... 00:17:23.64\00:17:25.01 you studied for yourself, 00:17:25.04\00:17:26.34 and you became... you became a seeker 00:17:26.37\00:17:30.15 of knowledge... and that's what I would love 00:17:30.18\00:17:33.38 for our kids to get this desire... 00:17:33.42\00:17:36.05 to know... for knowledge sake... 00:17:36.08\00:17:38.39 just to know... I want to know... 00:17:38.42\00:17:40.69 because I want to know... it's like... 00:17:40.72\00:17:42.89 instead of just like being on a 00:17:42.92\00:17:47.96 wild goose chase... focus on something... 00:17:48.00\00:17:50.73 that you really want to know more about... 00:17:50.77\00:17:53.23 and learn about it and then you become 00:17:53.27\00:17:55.64 an expert in that field... and that sounds like 00:17:55.67\00:17:58.47 that's what you did... and I applaud you for that... 00:17:58.51\00:18:00.71 I think that's so great... 00:18:00.74\00:18:01.94 And I think the interesting... I've just been traveling... 00:18:01.98\00:18:05.81 I travel a lot... I travel about 75 percent 00:18:05.85\00:18:07.88 of the time... for work... so I spend a lot of time 00:18:07.92\00:18:09.72 in the airport... and in us talking 00:18:09.75\00:18:11.42 there is an illustration that I think 00:18:11.45\00:18:13.39 makes it very clear on what it feels like 00:18:13.42\00:18:15.22 to be illiterate... right... because when you are at an 00:18:15.26\00:18:16.76 airport... you normally see a group of 00:18:16.79\00:18:18.66 tourists from another country, so when I was traveling 00:18:18.69\00:18:21.60 and I was connecting in to Vegas from Denver 00:18:21.63\00:18:24.00 there was a group of Asian tourists... 00:18:24.03\00:18:26.60 and they couldn't read the signs... 00:18:26.63\00:18:29.14 right... so they didn't know what gate to go to 00:18:29.17\00:18:31.44 they didn't know... so in everything they had to do 00:18:31.47\00:18:33.74 they had to seek someone's assistance... 00:18:33.78\00:18:35.74 someone had to direct them, someone had to guide them, 00:18:35.78\00:18:38.18 and we have people within our own society 00:18:38.21\00:18:40.78 who can't read... that need to take direction 00:18:40.82\00:18:42.92 in everything that they need to do in life 00:18:42.95\00:18:44.99 because they can't pick up a book or, you know, 00:18:45.02\00:18:47.79 go to a store to get the instruction that they need 00:18:47.82\00:18:50.53 directly... That is so true... 00:18:50.56\00:18:53.66 and you know what... that is a great illustration 00:18:53.70\00:18:56.36 because when you think about it if you go to a foreign country 00:18:56.40\00:18:59.53 and they have signs up... I mean, it's just gobbledygook 00:18:59.57\00:19:02.64 you have no idea what it says... 00:19:02.67\00:19:05.34 and so, tell us about the Organization 00:19:05.37\00:19:08.28 that you're working with that can change 00:19:08.31\00:19:11.81 our literacy gap here in this Country. 00:19:11.85\00:19:15.25 Yes, the Organization that I'm a partner with is 00:19:15.28\00:19:18.29 is TestOurKids. com and what that Organization does 00:19:18.32\00:19:21.62 is... it has a proprietary process of doing a 00:19:21.66\00:19:25.33 kind of a "reading assessment" on children... 00:19:25.36\00:19:29.36 so, it does reading, word recognition, phonetics 00:19:29.40\00:19:33.30 and basically... the other building block principles 00:19:33.34\00:19:37.17 of reading and literacy... to evaluate the kids and 00:19:37.21\00:19:40.54 to be able to give that picture to parents or even to 00:19:40.58\00:19:43.88 school organizations so that they know 00:19:43.91\00:19:45.95 where their children stand when it comes to literacy... 00:19:45.98\00:19:48.25 So, anybody can go to that website and sign up 00:19:48.28\00:19:54.79 to get their children assessed online... 00:19:54.82\00:19:58.19 is that correct? 00:19:58.23\00:20:00.13 That's correct... yes... if they go to TestOurKids. com 00:20:00.16\00:20:03.57 what they'll see is they can sign up to schedule 00:20:03.60\00:20:06.70 an assessment... because each assessment is also guided by 00:20:06.74\00:20:10.94 a person from the Organization that will kind of be with your 00:20:10.97\00:20:15.11 child as they take the assessment... you know... 00:20:15.14\00:20:16.81 try to assist them and guide them through the process 00:20:16.85\00:20:19.21 because they want it to be specifically... 00:20:19.25\00:20:21.42 the child being directed... directed by the assessment 00:20:21.45\00:20:24.75 itself... and kind of... without the interaction of 00:20:24.79\00:20:26.42 parents or someone really standing over their shoulder 00:20:26.45\00:20:28.82 so when my daughter took it, I basically set her in my office 00:20:28.86\00:20:32.53 we scheduled the assessment, the time started and 00:20:32.56\00:20:36.06 I just left her in there and she was directed 00:20:36.10\00:20:38.53 by them... she was directed by the assessment 00:20:38.57\00:20:41.17 and the person who was observing her evaluation 00:20:41.20\00:20:44.11 So, how does that... explain that a little bit more 00:20:44.14\00:20:47.01 for us... how does that work... somebody is observing... 00:20:47.04\00:20:49.68 is it like Skype... or someone is observing her 00:20:49.71\00:20:53.25 as she reads or how is that set up? 00:20:53.28\00:20:57.39 Yeah, so what it is is... 00:20:57.42\00:20:59.29 it's not like a video they can't see my daughter but 00:20:59.32\00:21:01.66 what they can see is what she's doing on the screen 00:21:01.69\00:21:03.96 so it's a computer-based... 00:21:03.99\00:21:05.89 it's almost like someone remoting into your PC 00:21:05.93\00:21:08.33 or into your computer where they can observe your 00:21:08.36\00:21:10.33 desktop... so while she's taking the exam... 00:21:10.37\00:21:13.30 they can the desktop... so as she clicks on 00:21:13.34\00:21:15.70 different words or if they kind of see her... 00:21:15.74\00:21:18.04 kind of drifting around the screen 00:21:18.07\00:21:20.54 not knowing which point to click... 00:21:20.58\00:21:23.01 then they can actually jump in and provide assistance 00:21:23.04\00:21:26.78 and so, during that time, at the beginning of it 00:21:26.82\00:21:29.15 she was on the... the representative from 00:21:29.18\00:21:31.59 TestOurKids. com is on the phone with my wife... 00:21:31.62\00:21:33.89 and then as my daughter kind of got into the assessment 00:21:33.92\00:21:37.13 and it kind of steadied out to where she was functioning 00:21:37.16\00:21:40.33 on her own... then they cut the conversation 00:21:40.36\00:21:42.66 with my wife... but if, during the assessment, 00:21:42.70\00:21:45.03 they would have run into an issue... 00:21:45.07\00:21:46.43 they would have called my wife back and said, 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.14 "It looks like... your daughter is struggling 00:21:48.17\00:21:49.80 with this... " and kind of help guide 00:21:49.84\00:21:52.17 through the completion of the evaluation... 00:21:52.21\00:21:54.51 and this sounds tremendous because... 00:21:54.54\00:21:57.98 what this is is... it's... you can't know 00:21:58.01\00:22:01.25 where you have to go if you don't know where you are 00:22:01.28\00:22:03.49 you need to know where you are... 00:22:03.52\00:22:05.39 so, this gives an assessment and lets the parent 00:22:05.42\00:22:09.62 know where the child is... and then... 00:22:09.66\00:22:12.49 you can... I would imagine... you could then kind of 00:22:12.53\00:22:16.10 chronicle the progress... and see how far your child 00:22:16.13\00:22:19.67 has come through this... so this is... 00:22:19.70\00:22:21.87 is this an ongoing process is it a one-time... 00:22:21.90\00:22:26.21 you get the assessment and then... what happens? 00:22:26.24\00:22:30.41 So, TestOurKids. com has the assessment tool 00:22:30.45\00:22:33.98 and it also has... it also has reading programs 00:22:34.02\00:22:37.52 online... so once the child is assessed 00:22:37.55\00:22:40.16 there are different programs online that you can have 00:22:40.19\00:22:43.06 whether it's online reading or different activities 00:22:43.09\00:22:45.89 and phonetics and the 8 key areas 00:22:45.93\00:22:48.03 that they children are assessed in 00:22:48.06\00:22:49.80 that the parent can enroll in 00:22:49.83\00:22:52.00 and kind of enroll their child in that school... 00:22:52.03\00:22:53.94 Roy, this sounds like an excellent program 00:22:53.97\00:22:56.94 because, you know, our kids are really kind of 00:22:56.97\00:23:01.28 geared toward technology so they can work with 00:23:01.31\00:23:04.51 the computer... get the information 00:23:04.55\00:23:08.35 and this seems as though it can bring 00:23:08.38\00:23:12.09 our kids from Level A to Level B to Level C 00:23:12.12\00:23:16.26 this is so, so critical... 00:23:16.29\00:23:18.56 what kinds of results are you getting with this program... 00:23:18.59\00:23:21.93 Well, from the Program Assessment 00:23:21.96\00:23:25.70 and the reading tools... the one thing it's also doing 00:23:25.73\00:23:28.40 on top of just encouraging parents to get their children 00:23:28.44\00:23:32.11 actively involved in reading is also spurring into community 00:23:32.14\00:23:35.78 involvement and having communities and 00:23:35.81\00:23:37.71 different community organizations reaching out... 00:23:37.75\00:23:40.32 to TestOurKids. com to help set up Reading Centers 00:23:40.35\00:23:42.92 as well... so, just providing those 00:23:42.95\00:23:45.42 resources... so, I mean, it's definitely an improvement 00:23:45.45\00:23:48.02 you can see the tracking improvement 00:23:48.06\00:23:50.83 with the children who participate in the assessment 00:23:50.86\00:23:53.16 and then have someone that kind of guides them through 00:23:53.19\00:23:55.46 improving the areas in which they're lacking... 00:23:55.50\00:23:57.33 So, a church, then, can... because this is not a religious 00:23:57.37\00:24:02.70 thing... this is just kind of neutral... kind of thing 00:24:02.74\00:24:07.18 a church can set up a Reading Center... 00:24:07.21\00:24:10.41 in the church for it's young people 00:24:10.45\00:24:13.38 and then, have them come there 00:24:13.42\00:24:16.28 and take part in this program and just... 00:24:16.32\00:24:19.49 in other words... offer a place... a safe place 00:24:19.52\00:24:21.96 like... some families might not have a computer 00:24:21.99\00:24:24.33 so the church has a computer, they can set up a program 00:24:24.36\00:24:28.26 for the young people for the kids to come 00:24:28.30\00:24:30.57 and get some... kind of tutoring without really 00:24:30.60\00:24:34.57 having anybody that has to actually do the teaching 00:24:34.60\00:24:38.07 it's built into the program, correct? 00:24:38.11\00:24:40.51 Correct... and that's one of the things that 00:24:40.54\00:24:43.24 I've kind of started in the early phases 00:24:43.28\00:24:45.65 which is reaching out to the churches that 00:24:45.68\00:24:48.18 even my own personal church and other churches 00:24:48.22\00:24:50.69 that I have connections with, and one... getting them... 00:24:50.72\00:24:53.36 to have the children of the church... assessed... 00:24:53.39\00:24:56.29 especially those churches that have a Christian Education 00:24:56.32\00:24:59.29 Department... or even their own private 00:24:59.33\00:25:00.96 Christian School... to have their children assessed 00:25:01.00\00:25:03.50 to see where their reading level is 00:25:03.53\00:25:04.90 and if they see a need... for reading development 00:25:04.93\00:25:07.67 within their children... then to work with 00:25:07.70\00:25:10.41 TestOurKids. com and organizations to build 00:25:10.44\00:25:13.07 a Reading Center that could not only be used for the church 00:25:13.11\00:25:15.81 but it can also be outreach... like you said... 00:25:15.84\00:25:18.85 literacy is non-religious it's non-partisan... 00:25:18.88\00:25:21.72 right?
