Stay tuned to meet a former NFL player 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.33 who's on fire for God. My name is Yvonne Lewis 00:00:03.43\00:00:06.40 and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:06.70\00:00:08.87 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:29.29\00:00:31.33 My guest today is Michael Charles, former NFL player 00:00:31.63\00:00:35.25 and lifestyle consultant. Welcome to Urban Report Michael. 00:00:35.45\00:00:39.30 Thank you... thank you for having me. 00:00:39.40\00:00:40.71 It is so great to have you here. Praise God! 00:00:40.91\00:00:43.71 We've been trying to get you here for a long time. 00:00:43.84\00:00:46.33 The Lord had me do a few travels but He finally landed me here 00:00:46.73\00:00:50.54 and I praise Him every day for just giving me this 00:00:50.74\00:00:53.28 opportunity. Thank you again for having me. Amen. 00:00:53.38\00:00:55.11 Well thank you so much for being willing to come 00:00:55.21\00:00:57.59 'cause our viewers need to know your story. 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.72 Oh, you don't have enough time. 00:01:00.92\00:01:02.76 I know, we have to get everything... crowd everything 00:01:03.06\00:01:05.85 into a 30-minute spot. But tell us about your journey. 00:01:05.95\00:01:10.44 Tell us what... where did you grow up? 00:01:10.64\00:01:12.40 Well, I'm from a big town, big city: Newark, New Jersey. 00:01:12.71\00:01:16.17 Oh, Newark! You know New Jersey is literally 00:01:16.20\00:01:18.66 a hop, skip, and jump from Manhattan. 00:01:18.70\00:01:20.85 You know, you could hop on the bus, 00:01:20.88\00:01:22.73 take it downtown Newark, skip through the train station 00:01:22.94\00:01:26.88 there, hop the turnstile and you're in Manhattan. 00:01:27.08\00:01:30.65 Hope a turnstile... wait a minute. 00:01:30.85\00:01:32.70 People from that city know about hopping the turnstile. 00:01:34.30\00:01:37.92 And so right across from Manhattan. I tell people 00:01:38.32\00:01:41.24 I used to... grew up playing hooky sometimes 00:01:41.34\00:01:43.05 in Times Square. They're like "Oh really? 00:01:43.25\00:01:46.00 You've been in Times Square. " I'm like: "Ahh, 00:01:46.20\00:01:47.79 it's not all that great. " It was just a nice growing up. 00:01:47.99\00:01:52.61 I was born in Newark like I said and grew up in 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.95 the Stella Home Project Area, so that's the west side of the 00:01:56.06\00:01:59.81 city, west side of Newark. 00:01:59.91\00:02:01.33 Newark is plagued with a lot of crime and blight... 00:02:01.43\00:02:05.75 economic blight. It was strifeful back at that time. 00:02:05.95\00:02:08.98 The only way of getting out, the only kind of light at the 00:02:09.38\00:02:13.10 end of the tunnel was through Satan's way which was drug sales 00:02:13.20\00:02:16.27 and some type of crime industry 00:02:16.47\00:02:18.93 or through God's... I don't even know if it's God's 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.19 way... Still it was Satan's other way which was sports. 00:02:21.29\00:02:23.54 Ummm. You know, organized sports. 00:02:23.84\00:02:26.17 And I see now how parents treat these kids, 00:02:26.37\00:02:29.60 you know, trying to prod them to be these great football 00:02:29.80\00:02:33.16 players or great basketball players, and it's just not right 00:02:33.26\00:02:35.42 I don't think. Tell us a little bit about that. 00:02:35.52\00:02:37.13 How do they prod their kids in New Jersey? 00:02:37.33\00:02:39.47 I've seen them pushing kids. I remember one time going 00:02:39.67\00:02:41.75 to a T-ball baseball game. 00:02:41.95\00:02:43.69 And T-ball is just for kids to just learn the game, 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.59 understand the game. Right. 00:02:46.79\00:02:48.03 And you put the ball on the T and then the kids stand up there 00:02:48.23\00:02:50.47 with their bat and swing and then they run the bases. 00:02:50.57\00:02:52.65 I've seen, you know, kids miss the ball. 00:02:52.96\00:02:55.16 You know, they do miss the ball. 00:02:55.19\00:02:56.55 Swing and it's right there and they still miss it. Right. 00:02:56.65\00:02:58.61 And I see parents just go... become unglued. 00:02:58.91\00:03:01.96 "Hey! It's just a kid... it's just a game. 00:03:02.68\00:03:06.07 They're not going to ever make it to the major leagues 00:03:06.37\00:03:09.10 and you're sitting here screaming at this kid like, 00:03:09.50\00:03:11.65 you know, he's a loser. And he's not! " 00:03:11.75\00:03:13.89 And same with football. I've seen, you know, parents 00:03:14.09\00:03:17.68 because their kid was so big. It's not like: "Well let me stop 00:03:17.88\00:03:21.24 feeding you cake and ice cream in the middle of the night" 00:03:21.34\00:03:23.61 and something like that. No, it's "Let me throw you out 00:03:23.82\00:03:25.94 here with these football coaches" who are trying to live 00:03:26.04\00:03:28.59 their former lives and live vicariously through these kids. 00:03:28.79\00:03:32.75 And next thing you know they've got them doing what I perceive 00:03:32.95\00:03:35.64 to be Army grass drills out there, and these are just kids. 00:03:35.74\00:03:39.26 And they wonder how these kids get beaten after the games. 00:03:39.46\00:03:42.21 So when they become of age... of a mature age... 00:03:42.41\00:03:44.77 they don't even like the sports any more. 00:03:44.97\00:03:46.92 Wow! So what you're seeing with these kind of back stage 00:03:47.22\00:03:50.75 parents who like if the kid is going into the entertainment 00:03:51.05\00:03:56.30 industry you have one kind of parent that's pushing. 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.97 Or for kids going into sports, that same type of parent 00:03:59.17\00:04:03.42 just kind of pushing them into something that it's not 00:04:03.62\00:04:06.75 best for them to be in. And I've never ever 00:04:06.85\00:04:09.46 in all my life seen parents push their kids 00:04:09.66\00:04:12.13 towards religion. Never seen no parent push a kid 00:04:12.43\00:04:15.59 to be a pastor... push a kid to be a Bible worker. 00:04:15.79\00:04:18.49 Push a kid to, you know, be some type of missionary... 00:04:18.79\00:04:22.17 never seen that. But you know, for sports 00:04:22.47\00:04:25.56 and entertainment, you know, they're right behind 00:04:25.77\00:04:28.05 and they're thinking about all the money that you're going to 00:04:28.25\00:04:29.80 "make for us. " All the money you're going to make for us. 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.79 Yes. A kid grows with all this pain and stress in his life. 00:04:33.00\00:04:35.69 I was a little different. My mom didn't really do that 00:04:36.29\00:04:38.90 with me. She just encouraged me in any direction I wanted. 00:04:39.00\00:04:41.95 She just wanted me to be a good citizen and a good man. 00:04:42.05\00:04:44.97 Were you in a single-parent household? 00:04:45.10\00:04:46.60 Two parents were there. My father was West Indian, 00:04:46.80\00:04:48.92 so I'm half Trinidad. And my mother's from North Carolina. 00:04:49.03\00:04:53.06 OK. And I have a younger brother and two younger sisters. 00:04:53.36\00:04:56.56 And we all are doing well right now. 00:04:56.66\00:04:59.07 Our parents are dead now. My mom had died from 00:04:59.27\00:05:02.12 diabetes in 1991 and then my dad died from prostate cancer 00:05:02.32\00:05:06.43 in 1993. Oh wow! Yeah. So it took a toll on me 00:05:06.63\00:05:11.04 and now that my last uncle just passed a few weeks ago 00:05:11.14\00:05:15.81 that left me as the oldest male matriarch in my family. 00:05:16.01\00:05:19.63 Yeah... patriarch. Patriarch, yes. So now 00:05:19.83\00:05:21.97 everybody's looking at me for all their answers 00:05:22.17\00:05:24.18 and to clear up something, as if I don't have enough on my plate 00:05:24.28\00:05:27.64 now - absolutely - I have to be the patriarch of my family. 00:05:27.74\00:05:30.01 Absolutely. So you grew up in Newark. Um-hmm. 00:05:30.31\00:05:33.60 Did you get drawn into the drugs? 00:05:33.80\00:05:36.59 Did you get drawn into selling and using and all of that? 00:05:36.79\00:05:40.02 Not into selling. Using a little bit. 00:05:40.32\00:05:42.60 You know, I had guys who were my age - friends of mine - 00:05:42.80\00:05:45.72 who were just low key got into smoking and drinking 00:05:45.92\00:05:49.66 of... back then it was the Malt Duck. OK. 00:05:49.76\00:05:53.33 I drank a little Malt Duck, and our neighbor 00:05:53.53\00:05:56.03 sold little bags of weed. And as we walked his dog for him 00:05:56.24\00:06:00.00 or do something for him he would repay us like that. 00:06:00.20\00:06:02.52 And it was nothing major... on a major scale. 00:06:02.92\00:06:06.12 We never thought that we were going to be like a Scarface 00:06:06.22\00:06:08.91 or anything and get into this big heavy kind of use and abuse. 00:06:09.11\00:06:12.50 And then shortly after that... we're talking 6th, 7th grade... 00:06:12.70\00:06:16.37 Wow! We're talking 6th or 7th grade. But then 00:06:16.58\00:06:18.64 shortly after that I went off to high school. 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.56 It followed me a little bit to high school 00:06:20.86\00:06:22.37 but then once I got into college I kind of left it behind 00:06:22.57\00:06:25.44 and drifted off from that and just really tried to focus 00:06:25.57\00:06:28.04 on sports. I didn't really start playing organized football 00:06:28.25\00:06:31.36 until I was about a junior in high school. 00:06:31.46\00:06:36.09 So my third year in high school I started playing organized 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.72 football. And then each year it got better. 00:06:38.83\00:06:41.47 I got getter in leaps and bounds. Like the next year 00:06:41.77\00:06:44.66 I was All-State Performer and All American in high school. 00:06:44.86\00:06:47.58 Wow! And I had all these colleges wooing me to come 00:06:47.79\00:06:50.17 to their university. Now what do you think 00:06:50.27\00:06:53.40 of the whole organized sports situation? 00:06:53.60\00:06:59.36 What do you think about the way the players are treated? 00:06:59.66\00:07:02.88 All of that? How? Well, the players are treated like gold... 00:07:03.18\00:07:06.56 but that's a commodity. You know that. 00:07:06.87\00:07:08.80 So the players? You can't get any better treatment than when 00:07:08.90\00:07:11.80 you're a player. OK. The problem comes... is 00:07:11.91\00:07:14.21 prior to being a player the way it gets into your head 00:07:14.41\00:07:17.66 and the type of person it makes some people, 00:07:17.86\00:07:19.82 you know, as far as being egotistical or self-centered 00:07:20.22\00:07:24.39 or selfish. All these type of things it makes people. 00:07:24.63\00:07:27.38 And then after you get in then you get glorified. 00:07:27.58\00:07:31.32 And this kind of glory reminds you of the gladiator days. 00:07:31.35\00:07:34.08 You know, here I am. I'm this big man. 00:07:34.28\00:07:37.94 I beat another big man and I throw and cast my body 00:07:38.14\00:07:42.07 into a man half my size who has the football, 00:07:42.17\00:07:44.52 drop him to the ground and stand up on top of him 00:07:44.72\00:07:47.27 and wait for 50,000 people to start screaming my name 00:07:47.47\00:07:50.09 and cheering me on. 00:07:50.39\00:07:51.60 And so I felt like it was gladiator days back again. 00:07:51.80\00:07:54.08 And so that kind of gives you that superiority complex. 00:07:54.41\00:07:57.61 And then you don't have to pay for anything. 00:07:57.91\00:07:59.69 Everybody wants you everywhere. 00:07:59.89\00:08:01.24 You don't have to wait in line. 00:08:01.54\00:08:03.12 You don't have to... It's just an open door policy 00:08:03.32\00:08:07.94 for you. Red carpet treatment everywhere you go. 00:08:08.05\00:08:09.87 And then comes the low is when you retire, after you retire. 00:08:10.17\00:08:13.28 Yes. Let's talk about the contrast because I think 00:08:13.38\00:08:18.02 that's a very important point. 00:08:18.12\00:08:20.04 So when you're playing you're up here on a mountaintop. 00:08:20.44\00:08:24.26 Everybody wants you around. 00:08:24.56\00:08:27.10 You're the man... that's it. Um-hmm. 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.20 Then you retire. What happens? 00:08:29.50\00:08:31.71 Well for some people I think if you don't have anything else 00:08:32.62\00:08:37.17 prior to playing football and all your life geared around 00:08:37.27\00:08:39.56 football, then you hit this big low part in your life. 00:08:39.66\00:08:44.18 Who'd you play for, Michael? I played with the Miami Dolphins. 00:08:44.48\00:08:46.79 In '83 I was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. 00:08:46.99\00:08:49.41 Me and a kid named Dan Marino. You might have heard of him. OK. 00:08:49.71\00:08:52.42 Me and him were the first two picks for the Miami Dolphins 00:08:52.72\00:08:55.04 in 1983. And then four years later 00:08:55.14\00:08:58.48 I got traded to the San Diego Chargers. 00:08:58.68\00:09:00.92 I stayed there and played with another great quarterback 00:09:01.12\00:09:02.98 Dan Fouts and a great tight end Kellen Winslow 00:09:03.08\00:09:06.36 and a great wide receiver in Wes Chandler. 00:09:06.66\00:09:10.81 And then left there, and when I left there 00:09:11.01\00:09:12.72 I went and played with the L.A. Raiders 00:09:12.75\00:09:14.41 when they came down to L.A. for those two years 00:09:14.61\00:09:16.71 and they left Oakland and came down to L.A. 00:09:16.91\00:09:18.84 And Art Shell was the coach, and at that time I played on 00:09:19.04\00:09:21.31 the defensive line with Howie Long and Bob Golic 00:09:21.41\00:09:25.91 and some of those great players. 00:09:26.01\00:09:27.13 And then after that I retired. 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.00 My knee was bothering me a little bit. Thought I would 00:09:30.20\00:09:33.03 retire... was tired of the game. 00:09:33.13\00:09:34.51 I went home, and then when I had gone home to retire 00:09:34.71\00:09:37.82 Jeff Fisher had just taken over at the defense. 00:09:38.12\00:09:40.80 He's now the head coach of the Saint Louis Rams. 00:09:41.11\00:09:44.27 But at that time he was the defense coordinator 00:09:44.57\00:09:47.53 for the L.A. Rams. 00:09:47.63\00:09:49.14 Called me out of retirement; asked me to come play with him. 00:09:49.17\00:09:51.96 So I completed my final year with the L.A. Rams. 00:09:52.26\00:09:55.45 It was a nice term... defensive line. 00:09:55.75\00:09:58.85 I had some great years; I had some OK years. 00:09:59.15\00:10:02.39 You know, up and down health wise. 00:10:02.69\00:10:04.42 And when I say health wise, I had nothing really broken 00:10:04.62\00:10:07.30 or sprained, but I just felt my body sort of giving away. 00:10:07.41\00:10:10.22 Did you get concussion? The big thing about that 00:10:10.53\00:10:15.16 now is the concussions that lead to depression. 00:10:15.37\00:10:18.34 Right. Did you suffer with concussions? 00:10:18.54\00:10:21.09 No but suffice to say I've caused a lot of concussions. 00:10:21.19\00:10:25.67 And no... I just... My position: I felt that 00:10:25.87\00:10:30.68 concussions and injury came to people going half speed. 00:10:30.88\00:10:35.02 You know, taking breaks on plays as we call it. 00:10:35.22\00:10:37.69 But me and my defense... you know, I've never really 00:10:37.89\00:10:40.21 taken a break on playing. As a defensive lineman I hit somebody 00:10:40.32\00:10:43.64 every play. And so you figure I played a thousand plays 00:10:43.84\00:10:47.61 a year and I played for 16 years - 00:10:47.81\00:10:50.01 high school, college, and pros - 00:10:50.21\00:10:51.83 so at 16,000 hits I've hit somebody 00:10:52.03\00:10:54.58 at some point in time... and hard, aggressive hits. 00:10:54.78\00:10:57.37 And I never really once came... The Lord blessed me 00:10:57.67\00:11:01.25 with no concussion. Never broke a leg; never broke an ankle; 00:11:01.45\00:11:03.88 never pulled anything. 00:11:04.18\00:11:06.09 So it's just by His grace that He kept me alive. 00:11:06.29\00:11:08.98 But I think He just kept me alive to realize 00:11:09.18\00:11:10.83 that that's not what He wanted me to do. 00:11:10.93\00:11:12.77 OK, OK... how did you? Let's talk about: 00:11:12.97\00:11:17.41 Where were you spiritually when you got involved with the NFL 00:11:17.52\00:11:22.37 and... Let's just start there. 00:11:22.57\00:11:25.79 Where were you? When I got involved spiritually 00:11:25.99\00:11:29.21 I wasn't with the NFL at that time. 00:11:29.31\00:11:30.97 All the while I was in the NFL it was all about self. 00:11:31.18\00:11:33.47 I had this... 00:11:33.67\00:11:35.47 I kind of guided my life. 00:11:38.27\00:11:40.18 Now that I'm a Bible student and I know Bible now 00:11:40.38\00:11:43.37 I kind of picture my life as the Prodigal Son. 00:11:43.57\00:11:46.77 OK. That parable in Luke. Yeah. 00:11:46.97\00:11:49.34 The younger man asked his father to give him his living 00:11:50.69\00:11:53.85 that befall upon him. So I felt that that was my 00:11:54.05\00:11:56.43 senior year of college. And I'm asking the Lord... 00:11:56.53\00:11:59.53 As I'm praying I'm not really praying sincerely. 00:11:59.73\00:12:02.37 I'm just praying, talking, theoretically. "OK, Lord, 00:12:02.57\00:12:05.63 I've been doing all this work, all this workout, all this 00:12:05.83\00:12:08.58 lifting, all this running, all these miles ran, 00:12:08.68\00:12:10.77 all this strength, all this testing, 00:12:10.97\00:12:12.68 it's time for You to give me my just due. " 00:12:12.88\00:12:14.88 And my just due, the parable says, the father gave him - 00:12:15.29\00:12:19.04 um-hmm - all he had. And my just due was my NFL contract. 00:12:19.25\00:12:22.44 "OK, here... that's your contract. " 00:12:22.74\00:12:24.67 And then shortly after that I left school, 00:12:25.07\00:12:27.33 you know, and go to the football camps. 00:12:27.53\00:12:29.59 And just like the parable said, shortly after that 00:12:29.62\00:12:31.68 I go to a far country. That was my far country: 00:12:31.88\00:12:34.72 the world. 00:12:35.02\00:12:36.63 And I spent my life, spent my substance, on riotous living. 00:12:36.94\00:12:40.53 And that's what I did: wine, women, and song. 00:12:40.73\00:12:42.92 Party. I was at a ladies' night every night. 00:12:43.22\00:12:44.94 It was very easy for me to talk to women. 00:12:45.94\00:12:48.07 Very easy for me to get involved with the, 00:12:48.27\00:12:51.69 you know, people who had drugs and drug connections. 00:12:52.09\00:12:54.97 Very easy for me to be around that. 00:12:55.27\00:12:56.80 Walk into a bar... they wouldn't take my money. 00:12:57.10\00:12:58.90 They just set up tabs for me and then cleared the tabs off. 00:12:59.10\00:13:01.82 All I'd do is just tip the bartender. 00:13:02.12\00:13:03.77 Just as long as I was there. They liked me there. 00:13:04.07\00:13:06.66 Liked being around. And then from that I had people 00:13:06.86\00:13:09.34 just liked being around me for that, too. 00:13:09.44\00:13:11.30 And then it was just... As I look back, it was just 00:13:11.50\00:13:16.22 a real whirlwind of just debauchery you know. 00:13:16.32\00:13:19.35 Up and down. And just like all merry-go-rounds, the rides 00:13:19.55\00:13:22.80 come to an end. Just as in our parable 00:13:22.90\00:13:25.01 the ride came to an end for the young man 00:13:25.21\00:13:27.14 and there became a famine in this land 00:13:27.34\00:13:31.53 and he began to be in want. 00:13:31.73\00:13:33.16 And that was me: a famine came in my land. 00:13:33.46\00:13:35.44 There's no football now. There's no football; I've retired. 00:13:35.54\00:13:39.39 What do I do now? I've got too much pride 00:13:39.59\00:13:43.01 in me to go and just start self-destructing. 00:13:43.21\00:13:45.96 So now I'm kind of a functioning person 00:13:46.26\00:13:49.65 that could smoke blunts, drink... But then 00:13:49.85\00:13:54.22 still work and be productive and pay my bills. 00:13:54.42\00:13:56.67 So I'm thinking... What kind of work? 00:13:56.87\00:13:58.96 I was a salesperson. Have a degree in communications 00:13:59.26\00:14:01.76 so I've always gotten into sales. 00:14:01.97\00:14:03.81 So I've always had the gift of gab and I just talk to people 00:14:04.01\00:14:06.51 and they owe me. And I started selling products... 00:14:06.71\00:14:09.31 different products. Started with home security sales 00:14:09.51\00:14:12.18 then I went into cell phone sales. 00:14:12.38\00:14:14.80 Just kind of branched off from there. 00:14:15.10\00:14:16.65 Morphed off and back into security sales. 00:14:16.85\00:14:18.68 And I used to design fire systems. 00:14:18.98\00:14:21.06 So it was just a sale of securities. 00:14:21.37\00:14:23.43 And then after a while 00:14:23.64\00:14:26.89 I think the Lord was ready. He knew I was looking. 00:14:27.19\00:14:29.79 I started going... Instead of hanging out and partying 00:14:30.09\00:14:33.37 and bringing the New Year in at a party... some wild party... 00:14:33.40\00:14:36.46 I started bringing the New Year in at a church. 00:14:36.66\00:14:38.81 Oh. And I started looking for churches on my own. 00:14:39.11\00:14:41.23 Um-huh. And I started looking for churches and I'm saying 00:14:41.54\00:14:43.18 "OK. " But then the different churches wasn't my speed. 00:14:43.38\00:14:46.80 I went to a Catholic church. That wasn't for me. 00:14:47.00\00:14:49.49 I went to some type of Baptist church 00:14:49.79\00:14:52.62 and the people got the Holy Spirit 00:14:52.82\00:14:54.47 and they started running up and down the aisles. 00:14:54.57\00:14:56.13 I was like: "OK... that's not for me. " 00:14:56.33\00:14:58.44 And somebody else jumped up to me. 00:14:58.74\00:15:00.62 Just having me seeing somebody who claims they've got tongues. 00:15:00.72\00:15:02.98 They jumped up and started blabbing in this gibberish. 00:15:03.18\00:15:06.28 And I was like: "OK, this is not the place either. " 00:15:06.49\00:15:10.13 But I'm trying, and the Lord knows that I'm trying - 00:15:10.43\00:15:12.58 right - to find Him. But now you're on a new spiritual path. 00:15:12.79\00:15:16.39 I'm on a path... Um-hmm - I'm on a path that I put myself on... 00:15:16.49\00:15:19.07 a self-imposed path. Um-hmm. 00:15:19.17\00:15:20.98 So when I retired, first place I moved to I guess was to 00:15:21.28\00:15:24.83 introduce me to Adventists. 'Cause all this time now - 00:15:24.93\00:15:27.89 I'm 30 years old and I had never heard of 00:15:27.99\00:15:29.42 Seventh-day Adventists. 00:15:29.56\00:15:30.66 Never heard of them... Thirty years old. Wow! 00:15:30.86\00:15:32.39 What an indictment that is on us, though. 00:15:32.59\00:15:34.52 Really. By 30 and you hadn't ever heard 00:15:34.82\00:15:38.43 of the Seventh-day Adventist church. That's an indictment 00:15:38.63\00:15:41.36 on us really. And here's more of an indictment. 00:15:41.46\00:15:44.03 Guess where He moves me to? I retire out of L.A. 00:15:44.43\00:15:47.62 I leave my L.A. home to go to Bowie, Maryland. Wow! 00:15:47.83\00:15:50.85 So I'm in Maryland... Adventist capitol of the country. 00:15:51.25\00:15:55.03 And still no Adventist came up to me. 00:15:55.23\00:15:57.40 And it wasn't until one day I came out of my house 00:15:57.80\00:16:00.72 and I talked to my neighbor... a nice African woman. 00:16:00.92\00:16:05.54 And she had a nice family. And when I'm coming from my 00:16:05.78\00:16:08.66 mailbox they're coming out of their house dressed up 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.78 ready to go. And I'm thinking: "Oh, OK. " 00:16:11.98\00:16:14.19 I'm joking with them and I say: "I know I tied one on last night 00:16:14.39\00:16:17.43 but don't tell me it's Sunday already... I missed a day! " 00:16:17.64\00:16:21.08 They said: "No, no... it's Saturday. " 00:16:21.29\00:16:22.66 I say: "Oh, y'all going to a wedding or to a funeral, 00:16:22.86\00:16:26.03 heaven forbid? " "Oh, no, we're going to church. " 00:16:26.13\00:16:28.27 I said: "Really? Church? " 00:16:28.57\00:16:30.96 So then automatically I went to 00:16:31.16\00:16:32.97 "Oh I didn't know y'all were Jewish. " 00:16:33.27\00:16:35.17 That's first thing I said: "I thought you were Jewish. " 00:16:35.47\00:16:37.45 Right, right. I said: "I didn't know you were Jewish. " 00:16:37.65\00:16:39.24 "No, we're Seventh-day Adventists. " "Seven who? " 00:16:39.34\00:16:41.68 "Seven what? " "What's a Seventh-day Adventist? " 00:16:41.98\00:16:45.04 And I said: "I've never heard of them. " 00:16:45.34\00:16:47.61 And she said: "Oh but we're running late. Come on over 00:16:47.81\00:16:50.07 for lunch. We'll talk all about it. " 00:16:50.17\00:16:51.66 And so I came over for lunch later on that day, 00:16:51.86\00:16:55.04 and first thing I noticed as I walked up to the house 00:16:55.24\00:16:58.53 I'm like: "OK, maybe I'm a little early 'cause I'm 00:16:58.73\00:17:01.28 not smelling no meat. " 00:17:01.38\00:17:02.70 Not smelling no meat cooking; nothing in the oven. 00:17:02.90\00:17:05.24 I'm thinkin' "OK, maybe I'm a little early. " 00:17:05.44\00:17:07.61 "Oh, you're just in time. " I'm thinking: "OK, just in time. 00:17:07.91\00:17:10.88 Maybe we're going somewhere. " 00:17:10.98\00:17:12.19 Sit us down, you know... a big plate of fruit. 00:17:12.39\00:17:16.25 All kinds of different food. Big bowl of salad. 00:17:16.46\00:17:19.30 There were homemade dressings, 2 or 3 homemade dressings. 00:17:19.61\00:17:22.27 Some freshly baked bread. 00:17:22.47\00:17:24.38 And I'm thinking: "Wow! OK! This is different. I like it. " 00:17:24.58\00:17:29.62 And then as I start reading stories I see that, 00:17:29.86\00:17:32.58 you know, back in the olden days, back in ancient days 00:17:32.78\00:17:36.77 that's how they ate. It was a big feast. 00:17:36.98\00:17:38.53 It wasn't like... didn't have no animals they was cooking. 00:17:38.73\00:17:41.48 The real feasts back then they had platters of fruits... 00:17:41.69\00:17:44.96 all kinds of fruits and vegetables. 00:17:45.16\00:17:46.89 Just had people eating like that. I said: "Oh! " 00:17:47.09\00:17:50.28 So your neighbors introduced you... just to Adventists... 00:17:50.52\00:17:54.83 to Adventism. But then just like anything, any time 00:17:55.13\00:17:57.74 there's something positive there Satan puts something 00:17:57.94\00:18:01.05 negative there. So what he did was put something in my eye 00:18:01.15\00:18:04.13 then had me move out of Maryland. 00:18:04.33\00:18:06.94 He set up an opportunity. He wanted t get you away from 00:18:07.34\00:18:09.43 that... all away from that period. Right. 00:18:09.53\00:18:11.34 So he sent me an opportunity and I moved to Tucson, Arizona. 00:18:11.54\00:18:14.12 OK. And I'm thinking: "OK. " 00:18:14.32\00:18:16.42 And so I never saw the family no more. 00:18:16.63\00:18:18.42 I got to Tucson I forgot all about the Adventists 00:18:18.72\00:18:21.30 just goin' through life. Just goin' through life every day. 00:18:21.50\00:18:25.71 And then suddenly... Now were you reading your Bible? 00:18:25.94\00:18:27.69 Were you going to any church? You were just... 00:18:27.89\00:18:30.04 just kind of out there? Just kind of out there. 00:18:30.24\00:18:31.74 Sunday was my day of rest so to speak. 00:18:31.94\00:18:34.46 After I went through Friday and Saturday - long weekends - 00:18:34.70\00:18:37.85 Sunday what I needed was to recuperate. 00:18:38.05\00:18:40.08 And I remember I had a cell phone business. 00:18:40.38\00:18:44.30 Had a cell phone business in 2002. 00:18:44.60\00:18:48.35 And I've been there 7 years now and I'm looking. 00:18:48.68\00:18:51.44 I really am looking for some... 00:18:51.64\00:18:52.73 I'm looking not only for something better 00:18:52.93\00:18:54.74 spiritually but I'm looking for someone better 00:18:54.94\00:18:57.55 than the people I've been going around with. 00:18:57.75\00:18:59.65 Aahhh. So I've always had beautiful women in my life. 00:18:59.95\00:19:03.01 Always had exotic-looking women. 00:19:03.21\00:19:04.87 But now as I look back there was nothing 00:19:04.97\00:19:08.04 no substance with them. There was just my time spent with them 00:19:08.24\00:19:11.88 and then, OK, ready for my time spent with the next one. 00:19:12.08\00:19:15.19 Trophies... Basically trophies and notches. Yes. 00:19:15.49\00:19:19.79 And so I'm like: "OK. " So then I go and - 00:19:19.93\00:19:22.64 I have a cell phone business - I sell a nurse some phones. 00:19:22.84\00:19:26.45 She invites me to the hospital; I deliver the phones. 00:19:26.75\00:19:29.00 While I'm there I say: "Hey, why don't you show me 00:19:29.10\00:19:32.14 around the hospital, introduce me to some doctors. 00:19:32.24\00:19:34.38 Maybe I can drum up some business. 00:19:34.59\00:19:35.90 I'll give out my business card and drum up some business. " 00:19:36.00\00:19:38.44 "OK. " We do that, 00:19:38.67\00:19:40.84 and I walked into Tucson Heart Hospital. 00:19:40.94\00:19:45.00 I walked in there, and there's the most beautiful 00:19:45.30\00:19:47.88 woman I've ever seen right in my face. 00:19:48.08\00:19:50.03 And I said: "Wow, that's going to be my wife right there. " 00:19:50.23\00:19:53.64 Wow! And come to find out 00:19:53.94\00:19:55.97 her name is the former LeniliManako. 00:19:56.17\00:19:59.06 And she is of Tongan descent 00:19:59.26\00:20:02.87 so she's an island girl, so that struck me right there. 00:20:03.07\00:20:05.91 And she has that exotic look that I've always liked. 00:20:06.12\00:20:08.99 That struck me, and she's a third generation Adventist. 00:20:09.19\00:20:12.66 Come on now. I knew nothing about Adventists. 00:20:12.96\00:20:15.54 Now look at God 'cause He knows that, 00:20:15.64\00:20:18.24 you know, you might have a penchant for beautiful women. 00:20:18.44\00:20:21.21 So what does He do? He sends you a beautiful godly woman. 00:20:21.31\00:20:25.79 A godly woman at that - is that? - godly woman. 00:20:25.99\00:20:28.51 That's the most important thing. You know what, Michael? 00:20:28.71\00:20:30.52 One of the things that I'd like to let our viewers know - 00:20:30.62\00:20:34.71 um-hmmm - because so many of our young men think that 00:20:34.91\00:20:38.62 the answer is in sports or entertainment. 00:20:38.82\00:20:41.46 The answer is in all the women you can find 00:20:41.76\00:20:45.52 and all the money you can make and all the... 00:20:45.72\00:20:47.46 If you would, share with our young men 00:20:48.39\00:20:50.47 how that's not... there's nothing to it. 00:20:50.57\00:20:54.10 All those things, young men, it's how the parable says. 00:20:56.99\00:21:01.26 We are talking about the parable of the Prodigal Son. 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.41 Towards the end there he realized that all these things 00:21:04.72\00:21:07.83 he was after when he was in that far country 00:21:08.03\00:21:09.90 and he began to be in want, a famine grew up in this land, 00:21:10.10\00:21:13.33 was pig food. It was husk. 00:21:13.53\00:21:16.29 There was things that just... it spoils your appetite. 00:21:16.49\00:21:20.76 You know, really no substance to it. 00:21:21.06\00:21:23.15 And so now you're sitting here you're amongst these husks 00:21:23.45\00:21:26.43 and then two things: you die and you swindle in it 00:21:26.63\00:21:31.61 and you drown in it. And you just stay in it, 00:21:31.71\00:21:33.77 and it just brings you down like a big pot of quagmire 00:21:33.87\00:21:37.51 just sucks you in, or you wake up... you have an epiphany 00:21:37.61\00:21:41.07 and you go back. 00:21:41.37\00:21:42.95 And I woke up. I had an epiphany and I went back. 00:21:43.35\00:21:46.11 And in going back... You don't have to go back 00:21:46.51\00:21:48.65 and just run right into church 00:21:48.85\00:21:50.48 and start being this whole saintly person. 00:21:50.68\00:21:52.31 No... it takes a while. 00:21:52.51\00:21:53.75 I didn't just become the person I am today overnight. 00:21:54.05\00:21:57.78 It took a while. It took a longer time for me to be 00:21:58.02\00:22:00.78 the bad person I was. Now it took almost just as much 00:22:00.99\00:22:04.28 time to be this good person. 00:22:04.48\00:22:06.43 And in being this good person it's not like I walk... 00:22:06.73\00:22:09.73 I mean, I still sin. I'm still a sinful person. 00:22:09.93\00:22:12.13 We all do. But it's not that... I don't make sin 00:22:12.33\00:22:16.35 I don't put that as the foremost in my mind. 00:22:16.65\00:22:19.23 I'm not advocating sin. I'm not trying to be sinful. 00:22:19.63\00:22:23.71 I'm not doing sinful things say- ing: "Oh, OK God, forgive me. " 00:22:23.91\00:22:27.25 You know, knowing that it's sinful. Not going into things 00:22:27.55\00:22:29.98 knowing that it's sinful and making conscious efforts 00:22:30.18\00:22:33.60 to do sinful things. Now if I do something sinful 00:22:33.80\00:22:36.29 it's like: "Oh, I didn't realize it. Oh my bad. " 00:22:36.49\00:22:39.82 And I sincerely get down and ask for forgiveness 00:22:40.02\00:22:43.15 every day. And even if I can't remember 00:22:43.45\00:22:45.73 if I sinned that day I still ask for forgiveness 00:22:45.93\00:22:48.82 'cause I know He knows - yes - that I have done something 00:22:49.02\00:22:51.67 that wasn't favorable to Him. 00:22:51.97\00:22:53.25 Yes. And so I will just tell people that, 00:22:53.45\00:22:55.46 you know, find your connection with God. 00:22:55.66\00:22:58.56 You really need to find your connection with God. 00:22:58.76\00:23:00.52 And that's where we always lose. 00:23:00.82\00:23:02.88 And now they've taken it out of the school. 00:23:03.08\00:23:04.41 They've taken God out of school. 00:23:04.61\00:23:05.69 They've finally taken it out of the locker rooms. 00:23:05.79\00:23:07.73 They've taken it out of the work place. 00:23:07.93\00:23:10.09 You know, they just don't want you to have... 00:23:10.29\00:23:11.55 They want you to go out... They're forcing you 00:23:11.75\00:23:13.95 to go out and find your own connection. 00:23:14.15\00:23:16.04 They don't want to advocate a connection. 00:23:16.25\00:23:17.91 They don't want to say: "OK, we have a connection here 00:23:18.11\00:23:21.02 to make it easy for you. " No, Satan is making it hard on us. 00:23:21.22\00:23:23.73 Yeah. Taking it away from us. Taking it from around us 00:23:23.94\00:23:26.85 so now you're forced to go out and find it. 00:23:27.06\00:23:29.41 And then when we do? We still find pig food. 00:23:29.71\00:23:32.02 You know, we join ourself to a citizen of that far country 00:23:32.33\00:23:36.21 and then he puts us in his field to work. 00:23:36.41\00:23:40.27 So whether it be the dope man, 00:23:40.67\00:23:42.40 whether it be the business owner, 00:23:42.50\00:23:44.46 whether it be some 00:23:44.72\00:23:48.57 kind of get-rich-quick scheme. 00:23:48.77\00:23:51.04 Um-hmm. There's always something that's out there 00:23:51.24\00:23:53.34 that keeps you away from the true focus: 00:23:53.54\00:23:55.83 the path that's straight and narrow. Yes. 00:23:55.93\00:23:58.20 And so we wind up taking these zigzagged paths 00:23:58.30\00:24:01.36 and these quickie paths thinking that eventually we'll get there. 00:24:01.56\00:24:04.13 And it's not... it's pig food. Amen; thank you. 00:24:04.34\00:24:07.49 What would you? What are you doing now? 00:24:07.89\00:24:10.34 What? You're on a new path. Yes I am. 00:24:10.54\00:24:13.34 Tell us what you're doing now. 00:24:13.54\00:24:14.89 Well now I am executive director for The Healing Place. 00:24:14.99\00:24:17.75 And The Healing Place is an entity of Eden Valley Institute. 00:24:17.95\00:24:21.78 And Eden Valley Institute is a wellness center, 00:24:22.08\00:24:24.72 a lifestyle wellness center in Loveland, Colorado. 00:24:24.82\00:24:27.63 OK, and that's been in business now for about 50 years. 00:24:27.97\00:24:31.39 They've been helping guide people through health 00:24:31.49\00:24:35.10 to the Lord. Ummm. And so now they've acquired 00:24:35.30\00:24:38.72 a city ministry. And you know we're counseled 00:24:38.82\00:24:41.43 to go and reach into the city to reach those that feel they 00:24:41.63\00:24:45.04 have no time and have no time to take time out to come find 00:24:45.14\00:24:50.19 the Lord. We are counseled to go in and bring the Lord to them. 00:24:50.29\00:24:53.18 And so they have a new city ministry which is a health 00:24:53.48\00:24:55.83 education and community outreach center. 00:24:55.93\00:24:58.18 And so I direct that. And what we do is that we... 00:24:58.48\00:25:01.49 we... I've increased it since I've gotten in since Jan. 1. 00:25:01.70\00:25:05.98 And we've increased the ministry 00:25:06.38\00:25:08.13 and we provide a community food bank 00:25:08.33\00:25:11.07 and I put out... You know, I buy about - hmmm - 00:25:11.27\00:25:13.77 I serve about 1,500 pounds of food a month. 00:25:14.17\00:25:19.12 And that services about 450 families. 00:25:19.32\00:25:22.40 Wow! All right. And then we have about... 00:25:22.70\00:25:25.52 I have a community clothes bank. 00:25:25.72\00:25:27.51 And this is for the working poor and the needy too. 00:25:27.82\00:25:30.83 So it's like a thrift store, and people can come through. 00:25:31.14\00:25:34.81 And it's very nice stuff that I have. 00:25:34.91\00:25:36.45 And I've partnered with several agencies around 00:25:36.65\00:25:38.86 that can give me food and give me clothes. 00:25:39.06\00:25:41.41 And then I also give a personal Bible study myself. 00:25:41.71\00:25:44.36 I witness to them. I tell them stories about me 00:25:44.57\00:25:47.41 and I tell them stories about you. I share Bible stories 00:25:47.61\00:25:50.37 with them and tell them how it relates to them today. 00:25:50.57\00:25:53.34 Right, you apply it. 00:25:53.54\00:25:56.09 I apply Bible stories to them today. 00:25:56.19\00:25:57.25 We need to put your website up 00:25:57.35\00:25:58.75 so that people will know how to reach you. 00:25:58.95\00:26:01.60 Well praise God. So what you're doing is 00:26:01.90\00:26:03.90 you're reaching them with food, with clothing, 00:26:04.10\00:26:08.28 and with spiritual food. 00:26:08.48\00:26:10.16 "When I was hungry you fed Me. " That's right. 00:26:10.36\00:26:12.44 "When I was naked you clothed Me. " That's right. 00:26:12.74\00:26:14.48 You're meeting them at their point of need. 00:26:14.58\00:26:16.32 Right at that point... at that point. 00:26:16.42\00:26:18.16 And it's been a blessing. It has truly been a blessing. 00:26:18.20\00:26:21.15 I got a lot of formal training in what I do. 00:26:21.35\00:26:25.29 I picked up some training at Eden Valley. 00:26:25.59\00:26:27.62 They have a school - talk about that - a school called 00:26:27.82\00:26:30.98 THE WELL. And THE WELL is an acronym 00:26:31.08\00:26:33.93 for Training Health Educators 00:26:34.03\00:26:36.13 With Evangelism, Lifestyle, and Leadership. 00:26:36.43\00:26:39.78 Oh wow! I love it! 00:26:40.08\00:26:41.70 It's a beautiful school, a beautiful opportunity. 00:26:41.80\00:26:43.85 I came today... I came to 3ABN today 00:26:43.95\00:26:47.20 with the education director Matthew Dooley. 00:26:47.40\00:26:50.06 And he's going to share a little bit about that 00:26:50.26\00:26:52.35 on the Today program. Wonderful! And so we're excited 00:26:52.45\00:26:55.80 to be able to get that out and for people to 00:26:56.00\00:26:58.53 see what's going on at Eden Valley. 00:26:58.73\00:27:00.50 You know, people come from all over the world 00:27:00.81\00:27:02.36 and they talk about our place. And they come with various 00:27:02.46\00:27:04.70 stages of lifestyle diseases. 00:27:04.80\00:27:06.99 And when they come there and they learn about God's healing 00:27:07.29\00:27:10.52 ways - the 8 laws of health as we coin them - 00:27:10.62\00:27:13.11 and they learn about that and they see these diseases 00:27:13.31\00:27:16.14 reversing and subsiding they want to do more. 00:27:16.24\00:27:19.72 The problem is a lot of times when they come 00:27:20.12\00:27:21.92 they're in a controlled environment. When you come 00:27:22.12\00:27:24.39 to a lifestyle center. We prepare the food. 00:27:24.50\00:27:26.60 We get you up; we get you going. 00:27:26.80\00:27:29.20 Right. And then you have to leave. You go back to your home, 00:27:29.40\00:27:31.31 right, and there's nobody there doing what you want to do. 00:27:31.51\00:27:34.15 Right. That's where I step in in the city ministry. 00:27:34.35\00:27:36.81 We also provide wellness coaching down there. 00:27:37.01\00:27:39.79 So now you can call us and I can help walk you through 00:27:39.99\00:27:43.57 what you already learned. 00:27:43.77\00:27:44.86 I can show you how to cook. I'm a certified raw food chef 00:27:45.06\00:27:48.00 and a certified vegan chef. Come on now. 00:27:48.20\00:27:50.86 Look where God has brought you to! 00:27:51.06\00:27:52.92 Thank you so much for being with us. 00:27:53.22\00:27:55.41 Praise God for that. And thank you for being with us. 00:27:55.71\00:27:57.56 Make sure to join us next time. 00:27:57.86\00:27:59.51 it just wouldn't be the same without you. 00:27:59.71\00:28:02.63
