He was a founding member of the world-famous pop 00:00:01.00\00:00:04.20 R and B group Atlantic Starr. 00:00:04.23\00:00:06.37 She traveled the world as a print and runway model 00:00:06.70\00:00:09.57 for the Ford Modeling Agency in New York. 00:00:09.70\00:00:11.87 Stay tuned to meet them and hear their incredible story. 00:00:12.31\00:00:15.28 My name is Yvonne Lewis and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:15.51\00:00:19.11 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:41.27\00:00:43.41 My guests today are David and Marian Lewis: 00:00:43.64\00:00:46.64 singers, composers, and a loving couple in ministry 00:00:46.88\00:00:49.98 sharing Jesus. Welcome to Urban Report David and Marian. 00:00:50.11\00:00:54.05 Hi Yvonne... how're you doing? Hi... yeah! 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.59 I'm so glad you guys are here. 00:00:57.72\00:00:59.39 It's so wonderful that you've 00:00:59.52\00:01:00.79 taken the time out to be with us. 00:01:00.82\00:01:02.49 Thank you. Thank you for having us. Absolutely, Yvonne. 00:01:02.52\00:01:06.33 So you guys have such a rich history. 00:01:06.56\00:01:11.07 And some of our viewers might know you because you've been on 00:01:11.40\00:01:14.24 3ABN before but you've never been on Dare to Dream before. 00:01:14.27\00:01:17.74 So I'm really glad to have you on Urban Report 00:01:17.97\00:01:20.21 to tell your story. Our viewers love a great testimony. 00:01:20.34\00:01:24.98 So give us some of your background... 00:01:25.11\00:01:27.28 tell us your testimony. 00:01:27.42\00:01:28.88 Well, I was raised in a Christian home - 00:01:29.82\00:01:33.82 a God-fearing home - and I can't... 00:01:34.66\00:01:39.86 I don't know when... How can I say it? 00:01:40.00\00:01:43.60 It was... I always in my life... 00:01:43.73\00:01:47.50 being raised in the church all I knew was church. 00:01:49.37\00:01:52.64 My mom was a single mom. She raised us... 00:01:55.94\00:02:00.18 My dad died when I was 3 years old, 00:02:02.12\00:02:03.85 and she had to raise 6 kids by herself. 00:02:03.89\00:02:06.19 But very strong woman. 00:02:06.52\00:02:10.36 And a little while after that, Yvonne, my grandmother came 00:02:10.49\00:02:16.43 to help out. And she was a great inspiration 00:02:16.56\00:02:22.10 in molding and fostering us 00:02:22.24\00:02:25.77 as far as the things of God are concerned 00:02:25.91\00:02:28.64 and while my mom was out working. 00:02:29.81\00:02:32.35 And then I was introduced to music in the home as well 00:02:32.78\00:02:36.32 because there was always singing in our home. 00:02:36.45\00:02:40.49 You know... during devotion and prayer 00:02:40.82\00:02:45.39 and so forth. And so that's where I got my introduction. 00:02:45.53\00:02:49.73 But I started singing in church at the age of 7. 00:02:50.07\00:02:53.60 I sang a duet with my brother called Whisper a Prayer 00:02:53.94\00:02:57.54 and the church liked it so much that they made us do it over 00:02:57.87\00:03:02.78 twice... they made us sing it twice. 00:03:03.04\00:03:05.78 And from that point, you know, I started singing in the churches 00:03:06.01\00:03:09.98 in the New York and tri-state area. 00:03:10.12\00:03:13.12 And from that point I did a show 00:03:13.59\00:03:17.93 called the Ted Mack's Amateur Hour. 00:03:17.96\00:03:20.13 Oh yeah, I remember that. In the CBS studio. 00:03:20.26\00:03:24.43 And after I did that there was a write-up in the paper 00:03:24.77\00:03:28.70 about me. And a sweet lady - Jewish lady - 00:03:28.74\00:03:33.48 saw that article and she called my mom and said 00:03:33.61\00:03:36.88 "I saw your son in the paper and I would like to give him 00:03:37.21\00:03:41.22 piano lessons for free. " 00:03:41.35\00:03:42.88 So that started my classical piano training 00:03:43.02\00:03:48.19 or my formal music training. 00:03:48.32\00:03:50.99 And then after that... 00:03:51.33\00:03:53.56 Well how old were you at that point, David? 00:03:53.60\00:03:56.06 When I started playing piano I was 9 years old 00:03:57.27\00:04:00.77 and I took piano lessons for about four years. 00:04:01.10\00:04:06.14 And you know, some friends... 00:04:06.17\00:04:10.95 my brother and some friends... we wanted to start a group. 00:04:11.98\00:04:15.08 So what we did is we put together a band. 00:04:15.12\00:04:20.12 And, you know, I didn't want to take classical piano any more 00:04:20.26\00:04:24.36 because I was moving into that pop music or that R and B music 00:04:24.49\00:04:28.80 vein. I was being influenced by that. 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.30 So we played in the group from junior high 00:04:32.27\00:04:38.04 all through high school. And then after high school 00:04:38.07\00:04:42.08 in '76 I left to board a plane 00:04:42.21\00:04:48.22 headed to L.A. and played with my brothers 00:04:48.25\00:04:52.69 who were already out there because they left in the winter 00:04:52.82\00:04:56.96 of '75. But in the summer of '76 I went out to join them. 00:04:56.99\00:05:01.66 And we played in the L.A. area for about a year. 00:05:02.00\00:05:06.03 And at the same time we were making a demo. 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.40 And we shopped the demo... I'm sorry. That's OK, no no no. 00:05:08.74\00:05:13.41 So where were you in terms of God at this point? 00:05:13.54\00:05:16.71 By this point you're in your teens. You're heavily into 00:05:16.85\00:05:22.08 the kind of R and B feel, right? 00:05:22.32\00:05:25.32 Where was your spiritual life at this point? 00:05:25.75\00:05:28.29 Well as I said, being raised in a Christian home 00:05:28.52\00:05:32.36 I always knew about God, but there was that influence 00:05:32.49\00:05:35.83 outside of the home where you were always hearing 00:05:35.96\00:05:39.83 music that you didn't hear in your home. 00:05:40.97\00:05:43.41 I was hearing songs from The Temptations, 00:05:43.74\00:05:47.18 The Supremes, Jackson Five, 00:05:47.31\00:05:50.38 Sly and the Family Stone, The Beatles. 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.05 That influence was out there and you can't really get away 00:05:53.38\00:05:57.75 from the influence outside of the home, so 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.59 although I knew about God that music was also influencing 00:06:00.72\00:06:05.23 my life as well. And you know, not having a relationship with 00:06:05.26\00:06:10.40 Christ growing up in the home 00:06:10.43\00:06:13.50 and having that be a part of your tradition and culture 00:06:13.54\00:06:18.37 was one thing, but having a relationship with Christ 00:06:18.41\00:06:21.68 came later on in my life. 00:06:21.91\00:06:24.08 So again I was influenced by that music and wanted to 00:06:24.21\00:06:28.38 actually get into that. 00:06:28.42\00:06:29.98 OK, so when you went out to California 00:06:30.22\00:06:34.42 and you started really like "gigging" as they as in the 00:06:34.56\00:06:39.29 music business - like really working and doing all these 00:06:39.33\00:06:42.66 different sets with your group. Right? Right. 00:06:42.70\00:06:47.17 Absolutely. So what happened after that? 00:06:47.30\00:06:48.90 Well, when I got to California the group was playing 00:06:49.24\00:06:54.48 in clubs all over the L.A. area 00:06:54.51\00:06:57.28 and all over the place... Santa Ana, Anaheim, 00:06:57.41\00:07:01.52 and different places. And what we'd have to do is 00:07:01.65\00:07:04.89 sometimes we would go... We played 3 sets at one club 00:07:05.69\00:07:11.36 and then we'd pack up the equipment and play 2 or 3 sets 00:07:11.39\00:07:14.86 at another club. And that went on for about a year. 00:07:14.93\00:07:18.20 But at the same time we were producing a demo 00:07:18.53\00:07:22.30 for the record companies to hear so that after we finished 00:07:22.44\00:07:27.18 the demo we would be able to start shopping a deal. 00:07:27.41\00:07:31.78 Because that was the reason why we were out there: 00:07:31.91\00:07:34.28 to try and see if we could secure a record deal. 00:07:34.62\00:07:40.59 Right. For those viewers that don't know, shopping a deal 00:07:40.76\00:07:44.16 means you're trying to... you're taking your demo around 00:07:44.29\00:07:47.00 to get a recording contract. That's the bottom line. Right. 00:07:47.13\00:07:50.03 Right... absolutely. 00:07:50.17\00:07:51.90 And so after we finished our demo 00:07:52.13\00:07:56.87 we shopped it to a couple of record companies. 00:07:57.01\00:08:02.68 ABC... I think my manager called ABC and they were out to lunch 00:08:02.81\00:08:07.18 so he called A and M Records. 00:08:07.32\00:08:08.68 And they set up an audition for us. 00:08:09.12\00:08:12.59 Well before they set up an audition we were playing 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.56 out at UCLA and the A and R 00:08:15.59\00:08:18.36 representative from A and M came out to see us. 00:08:18.49\00:08:22.30 And then he set up an audition with Herb Alpert 00:08:22.53\00:08:27.84 who was the CEO of A and M Records. 00:08:27.97\00:08:30.91 And we did the audition 00:08:31.24\00:08:34.84 and I could kind of see Herb Alpert in the back, 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.85 you know, kind of bobbing his head a little bit. 00:08:37.98\00:08:39.91 We could all see that he kind of liked the group. 00:08:40.15\00:08:42.82 And after the audition was finished we all went back, 00:08:43.15\00:08:47.39 packed up the equipment, went back into the van 00:08:47.52\00:08:49.46 and kind of waited for some kind of confirmation 00:08:49.59\00:08:53.56 or word of what was going to happen next. 00:08:53.60\00:08:57.80 And the A and R person who set up the audition 00:08:58.23\00:09:01.87 came out and said: "Welcome to the world of making records. 00:09:01.90\00:09:05.34 Herb Alpert wants to sign you guys. " 00:09:05.67\00:09:08.14 Wow! And what was the response when you found out that 00:09:08.28\00:09:11.01 Herb Alpert wanted to sign you? 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.98 Everybody was elated. 00:09:13.21\00:09:14.98 You know, everybody was very, very, very excited 00:09:15.32\00:09:18.22 about it and we just felt like this was a dream come true. 00:09:18.25\00:09:22.82 This is what we had worked for all these years. 00:09:23.46\00:09:28.06 For many years we dreamed to be recording artists 00:09:28.20\00:09:31.90 and now it had become a reality. 00:09:32.23\00:09:36.10 Isn't it interesting, David, how you can be targeting 00:09:36.34\00:09:42.04 and focusing all your efforts toward one thing 00:09:42.08\00:09:45.58 and then you get it. And tell us what happened 00:09:45.71\00:09:49.22 after you got it? How was your life after you got that 00:09:49.35\00:09:52.69 record deal? Well, initially 00:09:52.72\00:09:56.99 when you get the deal and you record the album 00:09:57.36\00:10:00.73 and you hear yourself on the radio for the first time 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.70 it's the most exciting thing. I can't even put into words 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.97 how exciting it is to hear yourself on the radio. 00:10:08.00\00:10:11.51 Yeah. And you know, you're travelling. 00:10:11.74\00:10:15.28 You're making more money than you ever made before. 00:10:15.61\00:10:18.98 You're doing TV shows and radio and making videos 00:10:19.11\00:10:24.55 and all these different things and it's very exciting. 00:10:24.69\00:10:27.12 But after a while you become disillusioned 00:10:27.16\00:10:32.36 because it's not what it's all cracked up to be. 00:10:32.49\00:10:35.56 It's, you know, we as artists we love writing songs. 00:10:35.60\00:10:40.17 We love being on stage. 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.37 We love doing the creative part. 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.67 But it's also a business, and you've got to hire 00:10:44.81\00:10:48.58 lawyers and managers and accountants 00:10:48.71\00:10:52.25 and all these different things. 00:10:52.38\00:10:53.78 And also, too, there's a part of the promotion part of it 00:10:54.52\00:10:59.59 that is not really creative. 00:10:59.72\00:11:02.82 Personally, I like being in the studio. 00:11:03.46\00:11:06.23 I like making the appearances and stuff. 00:11:06.46\00:11:09.56 But when we were flying all over the world 00:11:09.83\00:11:12.33 and you'd get into a city and you check into your hotel 00:11:12.47\00:11:16.97 and you take a shower. And they say you have 3 or 4 00:11:17.11\00:11:20.68 interviews here and then you have to do an appearance there. 00:11:20.71\00:11:24.75 You know, it starts to become more than just a notion. 00:11:25.08\00:11:30.65 It's a lot that goes into it. 00:11:30.69\00:11:34.06 You know, again, it's really interesting because 00:11:34.29\00:11:37.79 the world at large thinks that it's all glamorous. 00:11:37.93\00:11:41.10 Right. It's all about glamour and glitz 00:11:41.33\00:11:44.10 and everybody just looks so happy 00:11:44.23\00:11:47.74 and all of that. But it's so much more than meets the eye. 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.34 And that's how Satan is, isn't it? 00:11:51.47\00:11:53.38 Isn't it? I mean, he presents something 00:11:53.51\00:11:56.18 looks good on the outside, but once you really find out 00:11:56.31\00:12:00.78 what's behind it and what's in there 00:12:00.92\00:12:03.32 it's not as beautiful as it might seem. 00:12:03.45\00:12:07.22 And that's one of the delusions that a lot of young people 00:12:07.46\00:12:12.13 are under that this is going to be just the be all and end all. 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.63 Marian, I want to get to you because I want to hear 00:12:15.76\00:12:21.24 your story as well, and then I want to tie you two together. 00:12:21.37\00:12:24.41 So we're going to come back to you, David, 00:12:24.54\00:12:26.21 because I want to find out how you navigated through 00:12:26.34\00:12:29.08 that world, but let's talk to Marian. Marian: 00:12:29.11\00:12:31.25 give us some of your background 00:12:31.38\00:12:32.75 'cause you have a very interesting life as well. 00:12:32.78\00:12:35.65 Tell us about yours. Well, I was raised in Denver, CO, 00:12:35.88\00:12:40.06 and I started modeling at a very early age. 00:12:40.19\00:12:44.79 I started working in the department stores as a high 00:12:46.49\00:12:48.90 fashion model by the time I was 16. 00:12:48.93\00:12:51.10 And then at 18 as soon as I graduated from high school 00:12:51.33\00:12:54.54 I went away to Ebony Fashion Fair. 00:12:54.67\00:12:56.57 And I did that for about 2-1/2 years. 00:12:56.81\00:12:59.11 I did several cosmetic ads and you know a lot of print work 00:12:59.44\00:13:03.68 for them as well. And then I went on to Paris 00:13:03.71\00:13:07.45 to do more of the high end, high fashion runway work. 00:13:07.62\00:13:13.42 I went to Paris and Italy and came back 00:13:13.69\00:13:17.09 and just continued to do fashion. I moved to California 00:13:17.13\00:13:23.06 and ended up doing music as well. 00:13:23.10\00:13:26.43 So I got with the group The Brothers Johnson. 00:13:26.47\00:13:29.44 I went on the road with them as a background vocalist. 00:13:29.57\00:13:33.48 And then I felt like "Wow, if I'm ever going to 00:13:34.94\00:13:39.18 really really make it big I've got to go to New York. " 00:13:39.31\00:13:41.78 And so I moved to New York 00:13:42.02\00:13:44.52 and started working for some really great designers. 00:13:44.65\00:13:48.12 You know, high fashion designers. 00:13:48.46\00:13:50.29 And I did that for a few years. 00:13:50.63\00:13:53.29 So were you doing music and modeling concurrently? 00:13:53.43\00:13:57.03 Well, no... it was either one or the other at the time. 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.37 So I finished singing with The Brothers Johnson 00:14:00.54\00:14:03.17 and then the modeling picked up. You know, it was kind of like 00:14:03.30\00:14:05.47 this picked up then that picked up. 00:14:05.61\00:14:07.11 You know, and so that's kind of how that went for me. 00:14:07.38\00:14:10.25 So while I was doing the high fashion work in New York 00:14:10.38\00:14:13.11 I'm doing print, I was doing commercials, 00:14:13.25\00:14:15.92 and I was doing runway. 00:14:16.05\00:14:18.05 And I did that for a few years and when I met David. 00:14:18.29\00:14:22.59 Where were you spiritually when you were doing the music 00:14:22.92\00:14:26.90 and the modeling? Where were you? 00:14:27.03\00:14:28.76 You know, it's interesting, Yvonne, because 00:14:29.00\00:14:31.13 you think... you really think that you 00:14:31.27\00:14:35.34 have a relationship with the Lord. 00:14:35.47\00:14:36.97 Because I was raised in the church as well. 00:14:37.51\00:14:40.04 I was raised in church, but my parents didn't 00:14:40.18\00:14:43.85 give me the same foundation that David had. 00:14:43.98\00:14:47.68 A whole history. You know, I mean... 00:14:47.82\00:14:49.72 He had... what's the word? you know, where... 00:14:50.05\00:14:54.46 Just for generations... Generations! That's the word 00:14:55.56\00:14:58.39 I was trying to think of. Just generations, you know. 00:14:58.43\00:15:00.16 His great grandfather... did Elder Cleveland baptize? Yes. 00:15:00.20\00:15:05.97 Really, like third, fourth generation in the church. 00:15:06.00\00:15:09.27 And for me it wasn't that way. 00:15:09.30\00:15:11.14 My father didn't attend church. 00:15:11.27\00:15:13.38 My mother took us to a little Japanese church 00:15:13.51\00:15:15.71 where I really didn't understand everything that was going on. 00:15:15.84\00:15:17.68 But I went, you know, 'cause mom took us to church. 00:15:17.81\00:15:20.05 So I really didn't have that relationship either. 00:15:20.85\00:15:22.95 And that's what we talk to our audiences and congregations 00:15:22.98\00:15:27.99 and young people about all the time. 00:15:28.12\00:15:29.86 It's really about the relation- ship, and when you don't have 00:15:29.99\00:15:32.13 the relationship this is what you get: 00:15:32.16\00:15:34.20 what you think and not what God wants. 00:15:34.40\00:15:37.57 And so that's why we went out. 00:15:37.80\00:15:39.77 That's why David went out; that's why I went out 00:15:39.90\00:15:41.90 into the world. And it wasn't until 00:15:41.94\00:15:45.71 actually we came together. But that was a "God-thing. " 00:15:45.84\00:15:49.61 Well tell us how you met. That was a "God-thing. " 00:15:49.74\00:15:53.01 How did you meet? 00:15:53.15\00:15:54.25 Well... thanks for asking. 00:15:55.42\00:15:58.25 Let's see, it was in 1980... It was way back in 19... 00:15:59.85\00:16:04.53 1988- right - the group Atlantic Starr was searching for 00:16:04.66\00:16:09.33 a new female vocalist because Barbara Weathers - 00:16:09.46\00:16:12.00 the young lady who sang Always along with David 00:16:12.23\00:16:14.84 and Secret Lovers - she went on to a solo career. 00:16:14.97\00:16:18.14 And I was living and working in Manhattan as a model. 00:16:18.47\00:16:23.41 Some friends of mine told me that the group Atlantic Starr 00:16:23.58\00:16:27.08 was searching for a new female vocalist. 00:16:27.22\00:16:30.15 And so I thought: "Well, I'd like to audition. " 00:16:30.39\00:16:33.02 So I called the studio where they were recording 00:16:33.36\00:16:36.19 and David Lewis answered the phone. 00:16:36.32\00:16:38.99 And I didn't know who David was as an individual. 00:16:39.69\00:16:42.46 I knew the group Atlantic Starr 00:16:42.60\00:16:44.03 but I didn't know the individual. So... 00:16:44.17\00:16:46.40 when I found out that he was actually the lead singer 00:16:46.63\00:16:50.24 doing this interview I thought that, you know, 00:16:50.37\00:16:53.58 it would be nice if I could come up to the studio 00:16:53.71\00:16:56.18 and audition for them. 00:16:56.31\00:16:58.08 So to make a long story short... 00:16:58.31\00:17:00.32 David drove down... I convinced him to drive down to Manhattan. 00:17:00.45\00:17:04.15 To come pick me up and kind of interview me. 00:17:04.29\00:17:07.42 And you know, I had all my materials. I had a demo tape 00:17:07.56\00:17:09.62 and my picture and all these things. 00:17:09.76\00:17:11.83 And so we rode around New York City 00:17:12.06\00:17:13.96 and he listened to my demo tape. 00:17:14.10\00:17:16.93 And at that time they were looking for someone 00:17:17.07\00:17:20.17 who was really like a Whitney Houston. 00:17:20.30\00:17:22.00 You know, who could carry their own. 00:17:22.04\00:17:23.87 And you know, I had a nice voice... a pleasant voice... 00:17:24.01\00:17:26.34 but I think they were just looking for a really really 00:17:26.47\00:17:28.11 strong vocalist. But David and his brothers were 00:17:28.14\00:17:32.18 producing solo artists, and so they considered producing me 00:17:32.31\00:17:36.72 as a solo artist. And that's how our work relationship began. 00:17:36.85\00:17:40.49 And then you know, like I tell people all the time in our 00:17:40.72\00:17:44.06 testimony, we started spending so much time together that 00:17:44.09\00:17:46.43 you know, naturally we would have lunch 00:17:46.56\00:17:48.20 and naturally we would have dinner. 00:17:48.23\00:17:50.33 And then, of course... And then, you know, we fell in love. 00:17:51.53\00:17:54.70 And it just kind of just went from there. 00:17:56.27\00:17:58.04 It's just real interesting because... you know... 00:17:58.17\00:18:01.78 David and I come from two different backgrounds. 00:18:01.91\00:18:04.68 You know, you're living these two different lives 00:18:04.81\00:18:06.95 and then God sees fit to bring you together. 00:18:07.08\00:18:09.68 You know, it's totally a "God-thing" 00:18:11.52\00:18:13.22 because - yes, yes - we weren't trying. We didn't expect it. 00:18:13.36\00:18:16.49 We thought we were going to do music together 00:18:16.83\00:18:19.13 but God had a bigger plan all along. 00:18:19.36\00:18:22.40 Absolutely. That's how great our God is. 00:18:22.53\00:18:25.30 He has so many different ways that He accomplishes 00:18:25.33\00:18:29.27 things. He's just such an awesome God. 00:18:29.40\00:18:32.34 Tell us how you came to know Jesus Christ 00:18:32.67\00:18:37.15 and then we want to find out what you're doing now. 00:18:37.18\00:18:39.38 OK. Well, as Marian said after we got married 00:18:39.81\00:18:44.99 we joined a Bible study. 00:18:45.12\00:18:47.16 And my sister was going to a church in Peekskill, NY. 00:18:48.22\00:18:51.99 And she said: "There's a Bible study up there that we do 00:18:52.13\00:18:55.86 every Wednesday night so if you want to come 00:18:56.00\00:18:58.53 and be a part of it you can do that. " 00:18:58.67\00:19:01.84 And I said: "OK. " And I truly feel that it 00:19:01.97\00:19:05.27 was the right time in my life 00:19:05.31\00:19:06.84 because for me to actually say: "OK, I'll do that" 00:19:06.88\00:19:10.75 wasn't something that I would have normally said. 00:19:10.78\00:19:14.08 So I believe everything has a time and a season, 00:19:15.52\00:19:21.32 Yvonne. Yes. And that was my time 00:19:21.46\00:19:24.39 and I started taking Bible studies. I joined a Bible study 00:19:24.53\00:19:28.06 and started reading the Word. 00:19:28.30\00:19:31.10 We were... Marian had actually started 00:19:33.07\00:19:36.94 the Bible study... or joined a Bible study as well. 00:19:37.07\00:19:39.74 Started reading the Word, and the Holy Spirit has a way 00:19:40.08\00:19:45.78 of as you get into the Word of God 00:19:45.91\00:19:49.18 opening your eyes to really see what you can't see. 00:19:49.32\00:19:52.85 He allows you to put on those specs 00:19:54.66\00:19:58.83 that allow you to have a perspective of life 00:19:58.96\00:20:04.23 that is real. Yes! The perspective that we have 00:20:04.37\00:20:07.54 in life before God finds us is jaded. That's right. 00:20:07.57\00:20:11.47 That's what John Newton said. 00:20:11.71\00:20:14.38 "I once was lost but now I'm found; 00:20:14.51\00:20:16.34 once blind, but now I see. " That's right. 00:20:16.48\00:20:18.95 And that's what started to happen. 00:20:18.98\00:20:20.88 As we started to 00:20:21.02\00:20:22.92 associate with people of like mind 00:20:25.15\00:20:28.52 who were into the Word, who had a relationship 00:20:28.66\00:20:32.73 with the Lord, that started to rub off on us. 00:20:32.86\00:20:35.96 And although I hadn't completely left the business 00:20:36.10\00:20:40.64 I at least started going back to church again 00:20:40.87\00:20:44.01 on the Sabbath. And wherever I was 00:20:44.14\00:20:48.38 in the world: if I was in L.A., if I was in Japan, 00:20:48.51\00:20:52.65 wherever I was I would find a church to go to. 00:20:52.78\00:20:55.25 And slowly but surely... God has a winsome way, 00:20:55.68\00:21:00.52 a loving way of just gradually getting you 00:21:00.56\00:21:04.43 to the point where you become... 00:21:04.46\00:21:07.60 what you're doing - if it's not in line with Him - 00:21:10.27\00:21:14.34 starts to become foreign - that's right - 00:21:14.47\00:21:16.77 and uncomfortable. It started to become uncomfortable 00:21:16.81\00:21:19.64 because the Holy Spirit was constantly enlightening me 00:21:19.77\00:21:24.85 as to what I should do as opposed to what I was doing. 00:21:24.98\00:21:28.32 Yes, yes. God has His ways of 00:21:28.55\00:21:31.89 drawing us to Him at the right time and in His way. 00:21:32.02\00:21:35.79 Absolutely. You are now writing songs 00:21:36.02\00:21:40.93 and you have written a song that we're going to show 00:21:40.96\00:21:44.97 the video to. Set this up for us... 00:21:45.00\00:21:46.87 tell us about this song. 00:21:46.90\00:21:48.77 OK. The song that we're about to listen to 00:21:49.00\00:21:51.97 is called "I'll Pray For You. " 00:21:52.11\00:21:54.24 And it's a song about my mom. 00:21:54.58\00:21:58.25 She passed away in August of 2012. 00:21:58.38\00:22:02.48 And just going through the grief process of it all. 00:22:03.02\00:22:07.79 And one day I was in our kitchen 00:22:07.92\00:22:10.56 I think after devotion, and God gave me the melody 00:22:10.59\00:22:15.73 to this song or the melody in the song. 00:22:15.86\00:22:20.17 And I went to the piano and started playing it 00:22:20.30\00:22:22.67 and it kind of just came together. Wow. 00:22:22.80\00:22:26.07 And what I did is I contacted a friend... 00:22:26.11\00:22:29.34 a long-time friend named Jeff Prusan... 00:22:29.48\00:22:33.48 who was actually our producer's assistant for our first album. 00:22:33.62\00:22:38.22 And we talked on the phone a lot about my mom 00:22:38.65\00:22:44.09 and who she was. And he just asked us a lot of questions 00:22:44.13\00:22:47.73 about her because he said: "Before I write this song 00:22:47.86\00:22:50.23 I just want to know who I'm writing about. " 00:22:50.27\00:22:53.97 So we got together and put it together. 00:22:54.10\00:22:55.74 And it's a beautiful song... a tribute to her. 00:22:55.87\00:22:59.61 But also it's a tribute to all the mothers - yes, yes - who 00:22:59.64\00:23:04.45 sacrificed for their children and planted those seeds of love 00:23:04.48\00:23:08.92 in them to make them the people that they are today. 00:23:09.05\00:23:12.42 That's awesome. Let's hear the song. 00:23:12.65\00:23:14.46 I'd love to. 00:23:14.69\00:23:16.06 My grandfather used to pray for my whole family. 00:23:22.56\00:23:27.30 Even the children... some of them before they was born 00:23:27.54\00:23:32.57 he prayed for the children that would come. 00:23:32.61\00:23:35.71 When you have family and the older ones 00:23:42.02\00:23:48.02 that believe in prayer 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.69 and pray for your children, that helps to keep them 00:23:50.83\00:23:53.90 together... keep them going in the right direction 00:23:54.00\00:23:57.33 too, you know. 00:23:57.37\00:23:59.43 The measure of true leadership 00:24:04.74\00:24:09.38 can only be described as one 00:24:10.38\00:24:15.68 who plants the seeds of love 00:24:16.82\00:24:21.29 inside the child's heart. 00:24:21.42\00:24:26.49 The matriarch of our family tree, 00:24:28.53\00:24:34.00 a voice that shaped our destiny: 00:24:34.34\00:24:39.91 You have brought the Lord 00:24:40.91\00:24:44.21 into our lives. 00:24:44.45\00:24:48.52 She would always say: "I'll pray for you; 00:24:50.52\00:24:55.99 you pray for me. 00:24:58.83\00:25:02.30 Together we shall overcome 00:25:03.50\00:25:09.50 each obstacle. You'll see 00:25:09.64\00:25:14.64 that your darkest hour 00:25:14.88\00:25:20.35 will turn into a sun shower... " 00:25:20.88\00:25:26.86 "Jesus, I feel spiritually cleansed 00:25:41.00\00:25:46.17 from the superficial things... " 00:25:46.51\00:25:52.51 Is that beautiful or what? 00:25:52.75\00:25:54.75 And we couldn't even play the whole song. 00:25:54.88\00:25:57.05 It is beautiful! Thank you, Yvonne. 00:25:57.19\00:26:00.39 Praise the Lord! You guys... what do you want 00:26:01.32\00:26:05.46 our viewers to know? It's all mothers; all women, 00:26:38.33\00:26:41.33 all aunties; big-mamas... everybody who just went that 00:26:41.36\00:26:45.30 extra mile to sacrifice for their children. 00:26:45.33\00:26:48.27 This song can be found...
