He was a founding member of the world-famous pop 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.24 R and B group Atlantic Starr. 00:00:04.34\00:00:06.41 She traveled the world as a print and runway model 00:00:06.81\00:00:09.63 for the Ford Modeling Agency in New York. 00:00:09.83\00:00:11.90 Stay tuned to meet them and hear their incredible story. 00:00:12.40\00:00:15.31 My name is Yvonne Lewis and you're watching Urban Report. 00:00:15.62\00:00:19.15 Hello and welcome to Urban Report. 00:00:41.39\00:00:43.46 My guests today are David and Marian Lewis: 00:00:43.76\00:00:46.67 singers, composers, and a loving couple in ministry 00:00:46.97\00:00:50.01 sharing Jesus. Welcome to Urban Report David and Marian. 00:00:50.21\00:00:54.08 Hi Yvonne... how're you doing? Hi... yeah! 00:00:54.58\00:00:57.60 I'm so glad you guys are here. 00:00:57.81\00:00:59.41 It's so wonderful that you've 00:00:59.61\00:01:00.88 taken the time out to be with us. 00:01:00.91\00:01:02.60 Thank you. Thank you for having us. Absolutely, Yvonne. 00:01:02.63\00:01:06.34 So you guys have such a rich history. 00:01:06.64\00:01:11.12 And some of our viewers might know you because you've been on 00:01:11.52\00:01:14.29 3ABN before but you've never been on Dare to Dream before. 00:01:14.39\00:01:17.79 So I'm really glad to have you on Urban Report 00:01:18.09\00:01:20.26 to tell your story. Our viewers love a great testimony. 00:01:20.46\00:01:25.01 So give us some of your background... 00:01:25.21\00:01:27.31 tell us your testimony. 00:01:27.51\00:01:28.91 Well, I was raised in a Christian home - 00:01:29.92\00:01:33.85 a God-fearing home - and I can't... 00:01:34.76\00:01:39.88 I don't know when... How can I say it? 00:01:40.08\00:01:43.65 It was... I always in my life... 00:01:43.85\00:01:47.55 being raised in the church all I knew was church. 00:01:49.48\00:01:52.69 My mom was a single mom. She raised us... 00:01:56.06\00:02:00.21 My dad died when I was 3 years old, 00:02:02.21\00:02:03.87 and she had to raise 6 kids by herself. 00:02:03.97\00:02:06.21 But very strong woman. 00:02:06.61\00:02:10.37 And a little while after that, Yvonne, my grandmother came 00:02:10.58\00:02:16.48 to help out. And she was a great inspiration 00:02:16.68\00:02:22.14 in molding and fostering us 00:02:22.34\00:02:25.80 as far as the things of God are concerned 00:02:26.00\00:02:28.68 and while my mom was out working. 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.38 And then I was introduced to music in the home as well 00:02:32.88\00:02:36.35 because there was always singing in our home. 00:02:36.55\00:02:40.52 You know... during devotion and prayer 00:02:40.92\00:02:45.40 and so forth. And so that's where I got my introduction. 00:02:45.60\00:02:49.77 But I started singing in church at the age of 7. 00:02:50.17\00:02:53.66 I sang a duet with my brother called Whisper a Prayer 00:02:54.06\00:02:57.58 and the church liked it so much that they made us do it over 00:02:57.98\00:03:02.83 twice... they made us sing it twice. 00:03:03.14\00:03:05.82 And from that point, you know, I started singing in the churches 00:03:06.12\00:03:10.00 in the New York and tri-state area. 00:03:10.20\00:03:13.16 And from that point I did a show 00:03:13.67\00:03:17.95 called the Ted Mack's Amateur Hour. 00:03:18.05\00:03:20.15 Oh yeah, I remember that. In the CBS studio. 00:03:20.35\00:03:24.49 And after I did that there was a write-up in the paper 00:03:24.89\00:03:28.75 about me. And a sweet lady - Jewish lady - 00:03:28.85\00:03:33.52 saw that article and she called my mom and said 00:03:33.73\00:03:36.92 "I saw your son in the paper and I would like to give him 00:03:37.32\00:03:41.24 piano lessons for free. " 00:03:41.44\00:03:42.90 So that started my classical piano training 00:03:43.10\00:03:48.22 or my formal music training. 00:03:48.42\00:03:51.02 And then after that... 00:03:51.42\00:03:53.57 Well how old were you at that point, David? 00:03:53.67\00:03:56.10 When I started playing piano I was 9 years old 00:03:57.38\00:04:00.82 and I took piano lessons for about four years. 00:04:01.22\00:04:06.17 And you know, some friends... 00:04:06.27\00:04:10.97 my brother and some friends... we wanted to start a group. 00:04:12.09\00:04:15.12 So what we did is we put together a band. 00:04:15.22\00:04:20.15 And, you know, I didn't want to take classical piano any more 00:04:20.36\00:04:24.39 because I was moving into that pop music or that R and B music 00:04:24.59\00:04:28.84 vein. I was being influenced by that. 00:04:28.94\00:04:31.34 So we played in the group from junior high 00:04:32.41\00:04:38.07 all through high school. And then after high school 00:04:38.17\00:04:42.11 in '76 I left to board a plane 00:04:42.31\00:04:48.26 headed to L.A. and played with my brothers 00:04:48.36\00:04:52.71 who were already out there because they left in the winter 00:04:52.92\00:04:56.97 of '75. But in the summer of '76 I went out to join them. 00:04:57.07\00:05:01.72 And we played in the L.A. area for about a year. 00:05:02.12\00:05:06.08 And at the same time we were making a demo. 00:05:06.28\00:05:08.46 And we shopped the demo... I'm sorry. That's OK, no no no. 00:05:08.86\00:05:13.44 So where were you in terms of God at this point? 00:05:13.64\00:05:16.75 By this point you're in your teens. You're heavily into 00:05:16.95\00:05:22.13 the kind of R and B feel, right? 00:05:22.43\00:05:25.36 Where was your spiritual life at this point? 00:05:25.86\00:05:28.31 Well as I said, being raised in a Christian home 00:05:28.61\00:05:32.37 I always knew about God, but there was that influence 00:05:32.57\00:05:35.88 outside of the home where you were always hearing 00:05:36.08\00:05:39.87 music that you didn't hear in your home. 00:05:41.09\00:05:43.46 I was hearing songs from The Temptations, 00:05:43.86\00:05:47.23 The Supremes, Jackson Five, 00:05:47.43\00:05:50.40 Sly and the Family Stone, The Beatles. 00:05:50.60\00:05:53.08 That influence was out there and you can't really get away 00:05:53.48\00:05:57.78 from the influence outside of the home, so 00:05:57.88\00:06:00.63 although I knew about God that music was also influencing 00:06:00.83\00:06:05.25 my life as well. And you know, not having a relationship with 00:06:05.35\00:06:10.44 Christ growing up in the home 00:06:10.54\00:06:13.56 and having that be a part of your tradition and culture 00:06:13.66\00:06:18.41 was one thing, but having a relationship with Christ 00:06:18.51\00:06:21.73 came later on in my life. 00:06:22.03\00:06:24.12 So again I was influenced by that music and wanted to 00:06:24.32\00:06:28.40 actually get into that. 00:06:28.50\00:06:30.01 OK, so when you went out to California 00:06:30.31\00:06:34.45 and you started really like "gigging" as they as in the 00:06:34.65\00:06:39.30 music business - like really working and doing all these 00:06:39.40\00:06:42.69 different sets with your group. Right? Right. 00:06:42.80\00:06:47.20 Absolutely. So what happened after that? 00:06:47.40\00:06:48.94 Well, when I got to California the group was playing 00:06:49.34\00:06:54.51 in clubs all over the L.A. area 00:06:54.61\00:06:57.31 and all over the place... Santa Ana, Anaheim, 00:06:57.51\00:07:01.54 and different places. And what we'd have to do is 00:07:01.74\00:07:04.91 sometimes we would go... We played 3 sets at one club 00:07:05.78\00:07:11.37 and then we'd pack up the equipment and play 2 or 3 sets 00:07:11.47\00:07:14.90 at another club. And that went on for about a year. 00:07:15.00\00:07:18.24 But at the same time we were producing a demo 00:07:18.64\00:07:22.35 for the record companies to hear so that after we finished 00:07:22.55\00:07:27.21 the demo we would be able to start shopping a deal. 00:07:27.51\00:07:31.81 Because that was the reason why we were out there: 00:07:32.01\00:07:34.31 to try and see if we could secure a record deal. 00:07:34.71\00:07:40.63 Right. For those viewers that don't know, shopping a deal 00:07:40.84\00:07:44.17 means you're trying to... you're taking your demo around 00:07:44.37\00:07:47.02 to get a recording contract. That's the bottom line. Right. 00:07:47.23\00:07:50.09 Right... absolutely. 00:07:50.29\00:07:51.94 And so after we finished our demo 00:07:52.24\00:07:56.91 we shopped it to a couple of record companies. 00:07:57.11\00:08:02.73 ABC... I think my manager called ABC and they were out to lunch 00:08:02.93\00:08:07.22 so he called A and M Records. 00:08:07.42\00:08:08.73 And they set up an audition for us. 00:08:09.23\00:08:12.60 Well before they set up an audition we were playing 00:08:12.80\00:08:15.59 out at UCLA and the A and R 00:08:15.69\00:08:18.38 representative from A and M came out to see us. 00:08:18.58\00:08:22.35 And then he set up an audition with Herb Alpert 00:08:22.65\00:08:27.87 who was the CEO of A and M Records. 00:08:28.07\00:08:30.94 And we did the audition 00:08:31.34\00:08:34.89 and I could kind of see Herb Alpert in the back, 00:08:35.09\00:08:37.89 you know, kind of bobbing his head a little bit. 00:08:38.09\00:08:39.95 We could all see that he kind of liked the group. 00:08:40.26\00:08:42.86 And after the audition was finished we all went back, 00:08:43.26\00:08:47.43 packed up the equipment, went back into the van 00:08:47.63\00:08:49.47 and kind of waited for some kind of confirmation 00:08:49.68\00:08:53.57 or word of what was going to happen next. 00:08:53.68\00:08:57.86 And the A and R person who set up the audition 00:08:58.36\00:09:01.91 came out and said: "Welcome to the world of making records. 00:09:02.01\00:09:05.39 Herb Alpert wants to sign you guys. " 00:09:05.79\00:09:08.18 Wow! And what was the response when you found out that 00:09:08.38\00:09:11.05 Herb Alpert wanted to sign you? 00:09:11.15\00:09:13.00 Everybody was elated. 00:09:13.30\00:09:15.00 You know, everybody was very, very, very excited 00:09:15.40\00:09:18.24 about it and we just felt like this was a dream come true. 00:09:18.35\00:09:22.86 This is what we had worked for all these years. 00:09:23.56\00:09:28.10 For many years we dreamed to be recording artists 00:09:28.30\00:09:31.96 and now it had become a reality. 00:09:32.36\00:09:36.16 Isn't it interesting, David, how you can be targeting 00:09:36.46\00:09:42.09 and focusing all your efforts toward one thing 00:09:42.19\00:09:45.62 and then you get it. And tell us what happened 00:09:45.82\00:09:49.26 after you got it? How was your life after you got that 00:09:49.46\00:09:52.69 record deal? Well, initially 00:09:52.80\00:09:57.00 when you get the deal and you record the album 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.75 and you hear yourself on the radio for the first time 00:10:01.06\00:10:04.74 it's the most exciting thing. I can't even put into words 00:10:04.84\00:10:08.00 how exciting it is to hear yourself on the radio. 00:10:08.10\00:10:11.54 Yeah. And you know, you're travelling. 00:10:11.84\00:10:15.30 You're making more money than you ever made before. 00:10:15.70\00:10:19.01 You're doing TV shows and radio and making videos 00:10:19.21\00:10:24.58 and all these different things and it's very exciting. 00:10:24.78\00:10:27.17 But after a while you become disillusioned 00:10:27.25\00:10:32.39 because it's not what it's all cracked up to be. 00:10:32.59\00:10:35.70 It's, you know, we as artists we love writing songs. 00:10:35.73\00:10:40.22 We love being on stage. 00:10:40.42\00:10:42.40 We love doing the creative part. 00:10:42.60\00:10:44.71 But it's also a business, and you've got to hire 00:10:44.91\00:10:48.63 lawyers and managers and accountants 00:10:48.83\00:10:52.27 and all these different things. 00:10:52.47\00:10:53.81 And also, too, there's a part of the promotion part of it 00:10:54.63\00:10:59.60 that is not really creative. 00:10:59.80\00:11:02.86 Personally, I like being in the studio. 00:11:03.56\00:11:06.25 I like making the appearances and stuff. 00:11:06.55\00:11:09.63 But when we were flying all over the world 00:11:09.94\00:11:12.37 and you'd get into a city and you check into your hotel 00:11:12.57\00:11:17.01 and you take a shower. And they say you have 3 or 4 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.72 interviews here and then you have to do an appearance there. 00:11:20.83\00:11:24.79 You know, it starts to become more than just a notion. 00:11:25.19\00:11:30.75 It's a lot that goes into it. 00:11:30.78\00:11:34.08 You know, again, it's really interesting because 00:11:34.38\00:11:37.83 the world at large thinks that it's all glamorous. 00:11:38.03\00:11:41.14 Right. It's all about glamour and glitz 00:11:41.45\00:11:44.16 and everybody just looks so happy 00:11:44.36\00:11:47.78 and all of that. But it's so much more than meets the eye. 00:11:47.99\00:11:51.38 And that's how Satan is, isn't it? 00:11:51.58\00:11:53.43 Isn't it? I mean, he presents something 00:11:53.63\00:11:56.20 looks good on the outside, but once you really find out 00:11:56.40\00:12:00.80 what's behind it and what's in there 00:12:01.00\00:12:03.35 it's not as beautiful as it might seem. 00:12:03.55\00:12:07.24 And that's one of the delusions that a lot of young people 00:12:07.54\00:12:12.14 are under that this is going to be just the be all and end all. 00:12:12.34\00:12:15.68 Marian, I want to get to you because I want to hear 00:12:15.88\00:12:21.29 your story as well, and then I want to tie you two together. 00:12:21.49\00:12:24.45 So we're going to come back to you, David, 00:12:24.65\00:12:26.25 because I want to find out how you navigated through 00:12:26.45\00:12:29.11 that world, but let's talk to Marian. Marian: 00:12:29.22\00:12:31.29 give us some of your background 00:12:31.49\00:12:32.77 'cause you have a very interesting life as well. 00:12:32.87\00:12:35.69 Tell us about yours. Well, I was raised in Denver, CO, 00:12:35.99\00:12:40.08 and I started modeling at a very early age. 00:12:40.28\00:12:44.83 I started working in the department stores as a high 00:12:46.59\00:12:48.94 fashion model by the time I was 16. 00:12:49.04\00:12:51.16 And then at 18 as soon as I graduated from high school 00:12:51.46\00:12:54.59 I went away to Ebony Fashion Fair. 00:12:54.79\00:12:56.62 And I did that for about 2-1/2 years. 00:12:56.93\00:12:59.16 I did several cosmetic ads and you know a lot of print work 00:12:59.56\00:13:03.72 for them as well. And then I went on to Paris 00:13:03.82\00:13:07.47 to do more of the high end, high fashion runway work. 00:13:07.71\00:13:13.46 I went to Paris and Italy and came back 00:13:13.77\00:13:17.12 and just continued to do fashion. I moved to California 00:13:17.22\00:13:23.11 and ended up doing music as well. 00:13:23.21\00:13:26.44 So I got with the group The Brothers Johnson. 00:13:26.57\00:13:29.47 I went on the road with them as a background vocalist. 00:13:29.67\00:13:33.52 And then I felt like "Wow, if I'm ever going to 00:13:35.04\00:13:39.20 really really make it big I've got to go to New York. " 00:13:39.40\00:13:41.83 And so I moved to New York 00:13:42.13\00:13:44.54 and started working for some really great designers. 00:13:44.74\00:13:48.16 You know, high fashion designers. 00:13:48.56\00:13:50.32 And I did that for a few years. 00:13:50.72\00:13:53.30 So were you doing music and modeling concurrently? 00:13:53.50\00:13:57.07 Well, no... it was either one or the other at the time. 00:13:57.67\00:14:00.43 So I finished singing with The Brothers Johnson 00:14:00.66\00:14:03.20 and then the modeling picked up. You know, it was kind of like 00:14:03.41\00:14:05.51 this picked up then that picked up. 00:14:05.71\00:14:07.16 You know, and so that's kind of how that went for me. 00:14:07.47\00:14:10.28 So while I was doing the high fashion work in New York 00:14:10.48\00:14:13.14 I'm doing print, I was doing commercials, 00:14:13.34\00:14:15.95 and I was doing runway. 00:14:16.15\00:14:18.07 And I did that for a few years and when I met David. 00:14:18.37\00:14:22.63 Where were you spiritually when you were doing the music 00:14:23.03\00:14:26.93 and the modeling? Where were you? 00:14:27.13\00:14:28.82 You know, it's interesting, Yvonne, because 00:14:29.12\00:14:31.18 you think... you really think that you 00:14:31.39\00:14:35.38 have a relationship with the Lord. 00:14:35.58\00:14:37.00 Because I was raised in the church as well. 00:14:37.60\00:14:40.08 I was raised in church, but my parents didn't 00:14:40.28\00:14:43.88 give me the same foundation that David had. 00:14:44.08\00:14:47.71 A whole history. You know, I mean... 00:14:47.91\00:14:49.76 He had... what's the word? you know, where... 00:14:50.16\00:14:54.48 Just for generations... Generations! That's the word 00:14:55.65\00:14:58.42 I was trying to think of. Just generations, you know. 00:14:58.53\00:15:00.18 His great grandfather... did Elder Cleveland baptize? Yes. 00:15:00.28\00:15:05.98 Really, like third, fourth generation in the church. 00:15:06.11\00:15:09.28 And for me it wasn't that way. 00:15:09.41\00:15:11.17 My father didn't attend church. 00:15:11.37\00:15:13.40 My mother took us to a little Japanese church 00:15:13.60\00:15:15.74 where I really didn't understand everything that was going on. 00:15:15.94\00:15:17.73 But I went, you know, 'cause mom took us to church. 00:15:17.93\00:15:20.08 So I really didn't have that relationship either. 00:15:20.94\00:15:22.97 And that's what we talk to our audiences and congregations 00:15:23.07\00:15:28.03 and young people about all the time. 00:15:28.23\00:15:29.88 It's really about the relation- ship, and when you don't have 00:15:30.09\00:15:32.16 the relationship this is what you get: 00:15:32.26\00:15:34.20 what you think and not what God wants. 00:15:34.50\00:15:37.62 And so that's why we went out. 00:15:37.92\00:15:39.82 That's why David went out; that's why I went out 00:15:40.02\00:15:41.94 into the world. And it wasn't until 00:15:42.04\00:15:45.76 actually we came together. But that was a "God-thing. " 00:15:45.96\00:15:49.64 Well tell us how you met. That was a "God-thing. " 00:15:49.84\00:15:53.04 How did you meet? 00:15:53.24\00:15:54.29 Well... thanks for asking. 00:15:55.50\00:15:58.28 Let's see, it was in 1980... It was way back in 19... 00:15:59.96\00:16:04.54 1988- right - the group Atlantic Starr was searching for 00:16:04.75\00:16:09.37 a new female vocalist because Barbara Weathers - 00:16:09.57\00:16:12.05 the young lady who sang Always along with David 00:16:12.35\00:16:14.88 and Secret Lovers - she went on to a solo career. 00:16:15.08\00:16:18.19 And I was living and working in Manhattan as a model. 00:16:18.59\00:16:23.46 Some friends of mine told me that the group Atlantic Starr 00:16:23.69\00:16:27.11 was searching for a new female vocalist. 00:16:27.31\00:16:30.19 And so I thought: "Well, I'd like to audition. " 00:16:30.49\00:16:33.05 So I called the studio where they were recording 00:16:33.46\00:16:36.20 and David Lewis answered the phone. 00:16:36.40\00:16:39.02 And I didn't know who David was as an individual. 00:16:39.77\00:16:42.53 I knew the group Atlantic Starr 00:16:42.73\00:16:44.08 but I didn't know the individual. So... 00:16:44.28\00:16:46.44 when I found out that he was actually the lead singer 00:16:46.74\00:16:50.28 doing this interview I thought that, you know, 00:16:50.49\00:16:53.62 it would be nice if I could come up to the studio 00:16:53.82\00:16:56.22 and audition for them. 00:16:56.42\00:16:58.11 So to make a long story short... 00:16:58.42\00:17:00.34 David drove down... I convinced him to drive down to Manhattan. 00:17:00.54\00:17:04.17 To come pick me up and kind of interview me. 00:17:04.38\00:17:07.44 And you know, I had all my materials. I had a demo tape 00:17:07.64\00:17:09.65 and my picture and all these things. 00:17:09.85\00:17:11.84 And so we rode around New York City 00:17:12.15\00:17:13.99 and he listened to my demo tape. 00:17:14.20\00:17:16.98 And at that time they were looking for someone 00:17:17.18\00:17:20.22 who was really like a Whitney Houston. 00:17:20.43\00:17:22.12 You know, who could carry their own. 00:17:22.15\00:17:23.91 And you know, I had a nice voice... a pleasant voice... 00:17:24.11\00:17:26.37 but I think they were just looking for a really really 00:17:26.57\00:17:28.15 strong vocalist. But David and his brothers were 00:17:28.25\00:17:32.23 producing solo artists, and so they considered producing me 00:17:32.43\00:17:36.75 as a solo artist. And that's how our work relationship began. 00:17:36.95\00:17:40.52 And then you know, like I tell people all the time in our 00:17:40.82\00:17:44.09 testimony, we started spending so much time together that 00:17:44.19\00:17:46.44 you know, naturally we would have lunch 00:17:46.64\00:17:48.25 and naturally we would have dinner. 00:17:48.35\00:17:50.39 And then, of course... And then, you know, we fell in love. 00:17:51.66\00:17:54.75 And it just kind of just went from there. 00:17:56.37\00:17:58.09 It's just real interesting because... you know... 00:17:58.29\00:18:01.81 David and I come from two different backgrounds. 00:18:02.01\00:18:04.70 You know, you're living these two different lives 00:18:04.90\00:18:06.98 and then God sees fit to bring you together. 00:18:07.18\00:18:09.73 You know, it's totally a "God-thing" 00:18:11.60\00:18:13.24 because - yes, yes - we weren't trying. We didn't expect it. 00:18:13.44\00:18:16.53 We thought we were going to do music together 00:18:16.93\00:18:19.16 but God had a bigger plan all along. 00:18:19.46\00:18:22.44 Absolutely. That's how great our God is. 00:18:22.64\00:18:25.34 He has so many different ways that He accomplishes 00:18:25.44\00:18:29.30 things. He's just such an awesome God. 00:18:29.50\00:18:32.37 Tell us how you came to know Jesus Christ 00:18:32.78\00:18:37.17 and then we want to find out what you're doing now. 00:18:37.27\00:18:39.41 OK. Well, as Marian said after we got married 00:18:39.92\00:18:45.02 we joined a Bible study. 00:18:45.22\00:18:47.19 And my sister was going to a church in Peekskill, NY. 00:18:48.33\00:18:52.00 And she said: "There's a Bible study up there that we do 00:18:52.20\00:18:55.91 every Wednesday night so if you want to come 00:18:56.11\00:18:58.58 and be a part of it you can do that. " 00:18:58.78\00:19:01.87 And I said: "OK. " And I truly feel that it 00:19:02.07\00:19:05.32 was the right time in my life 00:19:05.42\00:19:06.88 because for me to actually say: "OK, I'll do that" 00:19:06.98\00:19:10.77 wasn't something that I would have normally said. 00:19:10.87\00:19:14.12 So I believe everything has a time and a season, 00:19:15.63\00:19:21.36 Yvonne. Yes. And that was my time 00:19:21.56\00:19:24.40 and I started taking Bible studies. I joined a Bible study 00:19:24.61\00:19:28.10 and started reading the Word. 00:19:28.40\00:19:31.14 We were... Marian had actually started 00:19:33.17\00:19:36.99 the Bible study... or joined a Bible study as well. 00:19:37.19\00:19:39.77 Started reading the Word, and the Holy Spirit has a way 00:19:40.17\00:19:45.82 of as you get into the Word of God 00:19:46.02\00:19:49.21 opening your eyes to really see what you can't see. 00:19:49.41\00:19:52.89 He allows you to put on those specs 00:19:54.74\00:19:58.86 that allow you to have a perspective of life 00:19:59.06\00:20:04.28 that is real. Yes! The perspective that we have 00:20:04.48\00:20:07.58 in life before God finds us is jaded. That's right. 00:20:07.68\00:20:11.52 That's what John Newton said. 00:20:11.82\00:20:14.43 "I once was lost but now I'm found; 00:20:14.63\00:20:16.38 once blind, but now I see. " That's right. 00:20:16.58\00:20:18.99 And that's what started to happen. 00:20:19.09\00:20:20.90 As we started to 00:20:21.11\00:20:22.94 associate with people of like mind 00:20:25.25\00:20:28.54 who were into the Word, who had a relationship 00:20:28.74\00:20:32.75 with the Lord, that started to rub off on us. 00:20:32.95\00:20:36.02 And although I hadn't completely left the business 00:20:36.22\00:20:40.67 I at least started going back to church again 00:20:40.97\00:20:44.05 on the Sabbath. And wherever I was 00:20:44.25\00:20:48.42 in the world: if I was in L.A., if I was in Japan, 00:20:48.62\00:20:52.69 wherever I was I would find a church to go to. 00:20:52.89\00:20:55.28 And slowly but surely... God has a winsome way, 00:20:55.78\00:21:00.54 a loving way of just gradually getting you 00:21:00.65\00:21:04.45 to the point where you become... 00:21:04.55\00:21:07.61 what you're doing - if it's not in line with Him - 00:21:10.39\00:21:14.37 starts to become foreign - that's right - 00:21:14.57\00:21:16.80 and uncomfortable. It started to become uncomfortable 00:21:16.90\00:21:19.69 because the Holy Spirit was constantly enlightening me 00:21:19.89\00:21:24.87 as to what I should do as opposed to what I was doing. 00:21:25.07\00:21:28.35 Yes, yes. God has His ways of 00:21:28.65\00:21:31.91 drawing us to Him at the right time and in His way. 00:21:32.11\00:21:35.83 Absolutely. You are now writing songs 00:21:36.13\00:21:40.91 and you have written a song that we're going to show 00:21:41.05\00:21:45.02 the video to. Set this up for us... 00:21:45.12\00:21:46.93 tell us about this song. 00:21:47.03\00:21:48.80 OK. The song that we're about to listen to 00:21:49.10\00:21:52.00 is called "I'll Pray For You. " 00:21:52.20\00:21:54.28 And it's a song about my mom. 00:21:54.68\00:21:58.27 She passed away in August of 2012. 00:21:58.47\00:22:02.53 And just going through the grief process of it all. 00:22:03.13\00:22:07.83 And one day I was in our kitchen 00:22:08.03\00:22:10.57 I think after devotion, and God gave me the melody 00:22:10.67\00:22:15.78 to this song or the melody in the song. 00:22:15.99\00:22:20.21 And I went to the piano and started playing it 00:22:20.41\00:22:22.73 and it kind of just came together. Wow. 00:22:22.93\00:22:26.09 And what I did is I contacted a friend... 00:22:26.23\00:22:29.37 a long-time friend named Jeff Prusan... 00:22:29.58\00:22:33.50 who was actually our producer's assistant for our first album. 00:22:33.70\00:22:38.26 And we talked on the phone a lot about my mom 00:22:38.76\00:22:44.11 and who she was. And he just asked us a lot of questions 00:22:44.21\00:22:47.75 about her because he said: "Before I write this song 00:22:47.96\00:22:50.28 I just want to know who I'm writing about. " 00:22:50.38\00:22:54.00 So we got together and put it together. 00:22:54.20\00:22:55.78 And it's a beautiful song... a tribute to her. 00:22:55.98\00:22:59.64 But also it's a tribute to all the mothers - yes, yes - who 00:22:59.74\00:23:04.44 sacrificed for their children and planted those seeds of love 00:23:04.58\00:23:08.96 in them to make them the people that they are today. 00:23:09.16\00:23:12.46 That's awesome. Let's hear the song. 00:23:12.76\00:23:14.47 I'd love to. 00:23:14.77\00:23:16.07 My grandfather used to pray for my whole family. 00:23:22.67\00:23:27.35 Even the children... some of them before they was born 00:23:27.65\00:23:32.60 he prayed for the children that would come. 00:23:32.70\00:23:35.75 When you have family and the older ones 00:23:42.10\00:23:48.06 that believe in prayer 00:23:48.26\00:23:50.71 and pray for your children, that helps to keep them 00:23:50.91\00:23:53.90 together... keep them going in the right direction 00:23:54.10\00:23:57.38 too, you know. 00:23:57.48\00:23:59.47 The measure of true leadership 00:24:04.84\00:24:09.43 can only be described as one 00:24:10.47\00:24:15.73 who plants the seeds of love 00:24:16.90\00:24:21.33 inside the child's heart. 00:24:21.53\00:24:26.53 The matriarch of our family tree, 00:24:28.66\00:24:34.05 a voice that shaped our destiny: 00:24:34.45\00:24:39.95 You have brought the Lord 00:24:41.03\00:24:44.25 into our lives. 00:24:44.55\00:24:48.56 She would always say: "I'll pray for you; 00:24:50.62\00:24:56.01 you pray for me. 00:24:58.90\00:25:02.34 Together we shall overcome 00:25:03.61\00:25:09.55 each obstacle. You'll see 00:25:09.75\00:25:14.68 that your darkest hour 00:25:14.98\00:25:20.37 will turn into a sun shower... " 00:25:20.97\00:25:26.88 "Jesus, I feel spiritually cleansed 00:25:41.10\00:25:46.22 from the superficial things... " 00:25:46.62\00:25:52.54 Is that beautiful or what? 00:25:52.84\00:25:54.79 And we couldn't even play the whole song. 00:25:54.99\00:25:57.08 It is beautiful! Thank you, Yvonne. 00:25:57.28\00:26:00.40 Praise the Lord! You guys... what do you want 00:26:01.43\00:26:05.47 our viewers to know?
